[Music] Hello, welcome to the five-year plan. Podcast mid-week episode part one. We'll be reviewing that 2-1 defeat at Everton and playing another round of 3-2-1 and then later in the week, answering your questions. That's how we do it now this season. That'll be Thursday morning. But for now, joining me, Jim Daly to chat about that defeat at Goodison Park. I can't believe I'm saying his name. We've had so many requests for this man to come back on the podcast. We had Andy Street a couple of weeks ago. That didn't feel right. So we've got the FYP podcast man behind me, obviously. It's Kevin Dehay. Kevin, welcome back to the podcast. How are you? I'm emotional, Jacob. I'm welling up here. It's so good to be back. It's so good to be back and I'm glad you've realized that ignominiously dropping me from the pod was actually contrary to UK employment. Aced discrimination laws. We finally, my lawyer convinced your lawyer that what you did was illegal, which is why I'm back for my... Unfortunately, we both have the same lawyer and he's not trustworthy, so that's what it's all about. Considering the amount of money he charges, I think he's the best lawyer in the police's arms, though, to be perfectly honest. Yes, it's about. Yes, it's about. I wouldn't... Yeah, I wouldn't be that comfortable with that. But now, it's lovely to have you back on. Thank you so much. I'm sorry it's been so long. And I just say, we've had loads of requests for you to come back on. So really look forward to catching up and getting your thoughts on Palace. And I've got a question later on about certain bit of paper, which I'm sure you're... Not very early doors. Well, they're asking already. They're asking already. That would be the longest bit of paper I've ever had. Well, hey, it's turning into that season. Also joining us, Joe Walker. Joe who actually made it to go to some park at the weekend. Joe, how was it to finally get there? Almost, because I hadn't now, after that, maybe that failed visit of that abandoned game in 2014-15. I think it was maybe that was a warning from the gods. But nice to see the stadium off. I didn't quite resonate with the sentiment of the fan holding the placard in the away end that said, "Evettin' Mintz make you far. Thank you very much. Good as some park." I don't think there's been enough good memories of it. Give us some proper Palace fans to thank. Is that true about Everton Mintz? So that's actually news to me. Who knows? I can't become the last time I had one, to be honest. You've never had. I'm going to guess you've never had one. It's very much what I would call a Nansweet. When you go to Grandparents' house, it'd be a very particular selection of confectionery. You know, Everton Mintz. Where was Originals? Hornville Chocolate. You know, stuff I haven't touched in many years. Whoa, whoa, I've only been back on five minutes. It's not really the age discrimination is taking in already. But yeah, I couldn't speak for the Everton Mintz effect. But yeah, in terms of good memories of Goodison, I've certainly not got any on a personal basis after that result on the weekend. But hey, this is what this pod is about. It's a therapeutic opportunity to pick right off. Well, Kevin, there's lots to be therapeutic about. It was not an enjoyable game for Palace. Good. OK, first half. Very disappointing. Second half. It kicked off after, you know, a minute or so. We've had a couple of questions from our regulars, actually. I'm sure we'd be glad to hear this. PCWires. Hey, PC. PC, you got mad. Have a run. PC says, why is it always Everton? Which it feels like. And David Kent said, should I bet my house on it? What was your review of this weekend's game? I think we seem to be particularly unlucky that teams get good news the week they play us. I mean, Leicester, we were the next gamer after Leicester had the good news that the Premier League had managed to cock up their one single, simple charge against them. So how they think Man City are going to get done? I don't know. They can't. They couldn't manage one. But then Everton got... There's understandably... The team didn't particularly play that way. But I think at half time that played a part in... There was that bounce. There was that sudden realization. I think if they hadn't had that news, John Texas ears, probably would have been burning with 25,000 rabid scouts as chanting his name. I had this image of us winning easily up there and Palace fans singing John Texas red and blue army. I think what was most disappointing for me is that Sean Deisty's Everton have never won from a losing position before, which that was... And I was aware of that at half time and I thought, you know, I was so relieved that half time that we were winning and from what I could gather we played reasonably well. And I generally thought we would hold on, but because I didn't think Everton would be able to back that trend, but that... That was very disappointing. I think we'll probably come on to reasons why the season hasn't panned out quite why we thought it would do. But just in that situation, I think it was very odd to see Chalabar on the bench and Lerman playing centre back when I think we all agreed at Canada, whatever he is, isn't a centre midfield player. And against going up to good as some part with what is essentially a lightweight midfield. I think with hindsight was a mistake. I mean, in the second half, he must have known they were going to come at us in the second half. So that was disappointing. And I think, as I said, I think there are mitigating factors for what's happened for the season so far, but I was quite distressed with that, as I don't particularly like Everton. We've had issues with Everton in the past, in particular, that game were chasing as they ran the pitch with Flair. So I would have been happy to win our last game up there, but it was... I'm very much in the Pro-Glasner camp, which you'll come on to, but that was a disappointing one. We've actually already got questions about that class and the future, which was very palace, doesn't it? It's funny this week. I don't know why, but certain people on certain WhatsApp groups have been saying that from the first day of the season, as we've now had on the social media. But this weekend, it did seem to kick. I obviously didn't help with what I thought was obviously a funny tweet about Roy Hodgson ironing his best tracksuit and getting his tie ready. It's clearly meant to be funny. I had loads of people going, "Yes, I didn't have a god, we'd have to get Hodgson back." One bloke told me never to go with a palace game again, called me a lightweight. It's like it's a joke. Everyone's... He's not feeding the portions. Yeah, because it clearly won't be Roy Hodgson. I like the fact that six minutes have already mentioned Roy Hodgson's name, but I think it's a record. Well, I don't worry, I'm going to give it time. It'll be Julian Chenery, Adam Sells, and then we'll mention all the old favourites. Because obviously Roy Hodgson's too old. That's ridiculous, it'll be David Moyes, he's only 62, so you know. Sorry, the youngest probably David Moyes. Joe, let's go... Kevin mentioned, I guess, kind of the big elephant in the room, which is that that line up, "Commander and midfield." "Commander is becoming, unfortunately, at a discussion point, every week." Every week. Joe, what was your thoughts when you saw the line up? Because I think we said during the week, we thought it might be Chalabar at the back. When it was clearly Lermour in the back three, Martin midfield with Walton again, and what was your reaction? And I guess you were probably in a booth or somewhere just outside. Yeah, the weather spoons at Liverpool Line Street was... Oh my God. Absolutely packed for 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. What my reaction was, slight concern, we all remember that performance, particularly in the first half, against Manchester United at home a couple of weeks or last week. And in that game we saw Adam Wharton hooked at half time. And then there's Sami Mockbell reported that he's been carrying an injury. So I was then expecting, well, maybe just West Wharton then. If this is a problem that has affected his performance across the season, let's be honest, as well as that game, maybe he needs to be rested. But seeing him in the team again and starting, I would not have expected Kamala to also be there alongside him again, because that combination... I didn't love it. And it is a part of the picture, Palace, that I think we've actually got a fair bit of depth relatively speaking. We could have quite easily played Jefferson Lermour with one of those two, and the final client in the back three, for example, if he felt that Shalabar, who hasn't trained a massive amount, needs more familiarity. I also thought given the approach that Everton were likely to have in the game, one certainly more physical than technical. That's not a midfield you want. Coming up against now, delight the Cora and people that leave their foot in. The first half, we were doing a lot on the ball and it wasn't a huge concern, but between them and even some of the attacking players, very sloppy passing, which I hoped would be dealt with with a half-time chance at a conversation maybe that settles them down. In the end, it was that slack passing which led to their equal eyes. Obviously, an incredible finish from Dwight McNeil, but prior to that, it is a really cheap giveaway in our own half that leads to that opening, which has never seemed... We didn't seem to react to that at all. It was like a bit of a shell shock, and then the other goal goes in, and we're very, very blunt in the response after that. But what was a relatively promising first half, I felt that Everton looked really poor, but we were having lots of bull breaks, but not taking chances. Even a cynical... So there's a guy that sits next to me at Sellers, who I saw at half-time in the concourse, and he went, "Well, you know what happens here?" And I kind of rolled my eyes at him going, "Ah, you're just being a cynic, come on. We're playing OK." But what was this, sort of, less than a minute? And then it proved, so maybe, yeah, I've got to just accept the typical Palace tag is there for a reason sometimes. I feel for Camadour a little bit, because he's clearly a good player, but he's not sent a mid. That legendary eight-minute YouTube video that we all got sent somehow mysteriously by the club, I don't know how they managed to do that, but he looked a great player, but none of the highlights were from a position of sentiment field. And even on the wear occasions that he may have played it in Germany, that's the Bundesliga. You've got much more time and space than the Bundesliga. I know it's a cliche, but you really have... To me, he looks like an old-fashioned inside, right? But now he got in Kettia. I'm not entirely sure Glazny had wanted in Kettia, but now he's got a crowbar in Kettia into the team. I'd prefer to see Camadour as a... I would happily see Esse out for a couple of weeks in Camadour there, because Joe mentioned typical palace. This is what... I don't know how we managed to do it, and I've talked about this a long time on the pod. Since we were first promoted, in fact, apart from that two-year hiatus recently, when I was unceremoniously forgotten about. Rested? But that's a lot of rest, and I feel really good. But I don't know how we managed to do it, no matter how optimistically or encouragingly we managed to end one season, we still find a way to go into the next season, as though it's our first ever season in the Premier League. And I think in a strange sort of way, Joe's mentioned this as well, we've almost got... We've got eight potential centre backs now. I think almost in a way the team sort of picked itself at the end of last season, and now he's got too many options, and we've got too many square pegs in round holes. I think if you look at what happened over the summer, everyone played well in those last seven or eight games. But you would say that Alise as a Walton Mateta, and for me, Anderson, would have most important. Alise was always going to go, and you can't be replaced. Simply irreplaceable. There's no one in Europe or Britain as good as Alise as well. So that's what it is. Alise has been on strike pretty much this season. It's not really firing all cylinders. Walton, as Joe said, is apparently carrying this groin injury and playing with pain injections and isn't dominating the way he was. Anderson, I think, was a shocking bit of business. Selling Anderson, I'm really disappointed with those Palace fans who go, well, it's clever business, because we're not a business. We're a football club. He started every game for Glasgow. For me, he was our best natural defender. And I think we really miss him. I think Glasner was annoyed that he was sold from underneath him. You could tell by his comments that Glasner didn't want to lose him. Anderson didn't want to go when he said we were treating him very badly. He's starting at Fulham, who are eight points ahead of us in the Premier League. Because those four players are not there, Mateta's not playing anywhere near as well as he could do. So of the team that won all those games, five of them, they're rather not there, or they're not playing really well. And that's clearly left Glasner with issues. He's made the most changes of any other starting 11 in the Premier League this season, whereas last season, I think occasionally the centre backs changed. But the core, the eight or nine, was exactly the same. And I think he's struggling to put players in the right position at the moment. I really do, and it's just tactically, it's not quite working out. Having said that, we've had six good halves. The football, the only trouble is there's been 12 halves. But we have looked in some games like second half against Man United, much, much better. Second half against Leicester, much better. The worry is, when you look at the fixture list at the start of the season, for once, you thought, actually, we haven't got a bad start. You would have hoped for nine, 10, 11 points by now. And the fact we've only got three is a worry. And of course, I think that's why, I think even if we've got a point last Saturday, the debate over the weekend on social media wouldn't have happened. But suddenly people... Yeah, it's a nature of social media. Well, it also is the nature of Steve Parrish, because whatever view you take, Steve Parrish is either quick and resolute, or he's trigger happy. But we've seen this situation before, I hope it won't happen. I don't think it will, but you wouldn't be 100% surprised if we've got a new manager, if we don't, if we don't perform well against Liverpool. And the way Steve Parrish works, it's time we had an old manager back. And so it works. We've got questions about that. We'll save them for Thursday, because people are talking about it already. I do think the nature of Steve Parrish sounds like a BBC2 documentary show. It's a great title for the plot, I might call it that. I'd watch that, and they would ask him to see Parrish's hedge in his garden. And here we see... We've got a really interesting what you're both saying there. I was actually, I think it depends on sort of how you're feeling about Palace in general, but you made a really good point in the Kevin about the start to seasons. And actually, it's only one season in 2015 where we started. Well, the other nine or 10 have been quite slow. And in a way, you could translate that as quite encouraging, but yes, it's been a slow start, and especially given the back of last season, where it was glorious time to get out of something. But it's disappointing, obviously, for the reasons you've outlined, there have been big changes, whether you think that's a manager's fault, or the sporting team's fault, or whatever. But you could, I guess, be on the side of what history suggests, even with a slow start, nine times out of the last 10 seasons. But let's do fine there for them again. It's just, I think at the moment, people are feeling frustrated, because it's a very good team, should be doing better, could be doing better, and it doesn't feel a million miles away from a team that could be doing better. Things just aren't clicking in the way they should do. Well, talking of history suggests, then, if you're asking me to pick who I blame for this, will it be the manager or the sporting directors? I think we could move on from the economy. Yeah, if anyone's listening to one for the first time, they're going to have a very strange thing, but out of context, that sounds very weird. But I think most people have probably listened to the last 500 hours. But you're right, that is encouraging, but at the same time, I generally thought, I would describe myself as one of the more pessimistic parlance, but I thought, finally, I've said it in public, I said it on radio. I thought this was the season we would kick on, and I thought, I thought for the most part, the players we brought in were really genuinely strengthening the squad, and Katya, I just think he's got him. He's either got a claim instead of JP or not blame, I think. And he gives the impression, I think, glazners use the words, they and the club a lot this season, rather than we. When he talked about Anderson being sold, he talked about they made a decision, the club made a decision. When he was asked whether and Katya started, he said, the club paid £25 million for him, I can't not start him. He's given the impression that perhaps it's not a player he particularly wanted. You talk to all Arsenal fans, they say he's got to play in the middle. It's just so lopsided at the moment. He's always going to play the three centre backs, and the two wing backs, and the two in midfield. But then the remaining three, he just can't seem to work out who that remaining three is. And Katya just isn't a natural in that sort of, I suppose, old-fashioned, inside-right position, but it's not. Although do you think he's been quite bright when he has played? I think he's a really good player. I also feel really sorry for Roy Hodgson in this, in that we know for a fact, he told us when we interviewed him for the £500 pod. He's always mentioned in Katya, Chalabar, and Saar, as players that have always been on his list. And suddenly he goes and they come in. And I think the way he talked about it, he would have loved it. And then Katya and Matheta were as an old-fashioned 4-4-2. And I think a lot of us wondered whether that's what Glasner was going to try and do with him. But they're not a partnership, and Katya doesn't think that. But he's a great footballer, and I think he's a really good addition to the squad. But I thought we were so growing up that it was a choice. It was either Matheta and Katya. And I thought that was a really good start. I thought this is how strong our squad is. We've got two really top-quality Premier League strikers here. But he's having to crowbar both of them into the lineup. Whereas I think Saar deserves a start. I think Kamada, we should look at, again, in their inside forward or number 10 role. So there's just little things that seem to need tweaking. But I don't think they're things that the manager's making, to be perfectly honest. Before we wrap up for part one and do three to one, which I think will be a, it's probably a bit of a tough one this week. Joe, can I go through a couple of match moments? Palace, open the scoring. Technically, not from a corner, from a second phase, but I mean, even how I've been with corners, maybe we give ourselves that one. And I thought it was a lovely little poacher's finish from Mark Gahey. It's a good header from La Croix, isn't it? And we said in the last week, he is going to offer us that from corners. So that was nice to see, I guess. You must have enjoyed that. Yeah, it was, yeah, I think, yeah, as you said, it was one of the main sort of things mentioned in three to one last week that he just seems a lot more aerially dominant than previous center halves that we've had in, certainly in the opponent's penalty area. And it happened, and there was a couple of occasions where that came to like, obviously the goal, where he was very obviously targeted on set pieces, sort of a far post cross that he knocks down, gay scores for that one. And then there was one shortly after where Munoz sort of almost gets in at the near post. And I think it's a La Croix lockdown from that move as well. It's nice to have something, you know, we haven't, there's a reason we haven't scored from corners for how, however long and having a, something just a new player like that to freshen it up. Someone that's so obviously strong in the air and had had enough awareness to, you know, not just hit a limp header at the goalkeeper to knock it down to somebody who might have a bit more opportunity to put more power behind it. That's going to be very useful for us in the coming weeks and months, hopefully. And there will be games across the season where we're not playing well, and we, or we're playing a much tougher side. And we may have to try and nick something at set pieces. That's how most teams in the mid table and below have to operate. And it's been frustrating, almost the DSA impressive that we've managed to achieve what we have without having that asset in our locker, if you like. So that change might benefit us moving forward, particularly when even now we're not, we're having moments, we're having breaks, but in terms of actually big clear cut chances when we were dominating play on Saturday wasn't a great deal. So we were still having to rely on a set piece to get in front. So you've got to have as many tangled up in too many metaphors and stuff. You want to have as many different skills to pull from, if you like. So it was nice to have that for once, you know, against, and again, it's the side in Everton who you'd imagine would not be thinking they'd concede any goals from set pieces given their physique and manager. Yeah, I think the choir is slowly getting better in out of the two plasma signings. He's definitely settling quicker than commander. And I think that each game he's getting to grips with the Premier League. I thought he did okay again other weekend. Well, he was the class of him and commander with the two signings that he clearly wanted. Yeah. They were the two that he made the most fuss about getting. And I still think that in an ideal world, his choice would have been Laquire Anderson and Gayie as a descent about three, if you like. Then you've got Riad and Richards as a really good, really good cover. You'd have been happy. I didn't happy with those three actually. I think I would have been very, very solid. Can I move on to the penalty, controversial, the penalty non penalty call Kevin that we didn't get for Tarkovsky on Mateta in the first half, which actually, as I was watching it, I thought was one of those that could go both ways. He's got the ball, but he's gone through the player. Some wretch seem to translate as a find tackle, some seem to call it. I felt Micah Richards on match the day actually did say that he thought it was a penalty as well. What were your thoughts on that? I don't know where to begin, JD, with penalties in red cards this season. It's one of the things, Ali's back from Tor, and one of the things she said to me, she said, "Don't take the opportunity to, you've had two years of not been able to talk about bad refereeing on the pod. Don't just bang on about that at all." And she said, "Also, a second bit of advice was, can I recommend that you use the phrase hard to disagree rather than that's bollocks, which I was planning to use?" I mean, why wasn't it a red card against the Manionite game? It was a straight red card for that tackle on Canada. On the other hand, you could say, "We'll usually have been sent off at Chelsea." I thought it was a penalty, but people are arguing about, we watched the Manionite, Spurs game, then Ed and I just straight away. That's a red card for Fernandez, straight away. And then you cut to all three pundits on Skye. Although I think Jamie Rednet might have been confused because he actually had tie-up shoes on. So the latest might have been cutting the blood to his, I don't know who did them for him, but he didn't have his sketches on. He had a tie-up shoe, so his oxygen wasn't getting to his brain in quite the same way. But then again, much of the two, they all said it wasn't a red card yet. When he clearly, yes, he's slit, but he clearly carries through the impetus with the action to rake his foot down Madison's leg. So it's a straight red and the people are going, "No, it's not." I think the quality of refereeing, I think the PGMOL lost whatever you think about John Moss, Martin Atkinson and Mike Dean, losing all three of them at the same time. Because you knew, they would fuck off both sets of fans, basically. But you knew they would, they're good experienced refs. And people were claiming that refs, the Michael Oliver has holidays in Dubai, so therefore, we shouldn't be refereeing Man City games, even though it's a separate country. It's ridiculous, but nothing surprises me. I mean, I'm looking at it first time in real life. You think that's a penalty, if it had been the other way around, and it was the choir taking out Calvatluian, you'd go, "That's not a penalty in a million years." So it's one of those. And as soon as there's any remote contact on the ball, the referee's got a reason. You remember one at Villa last year, which was when we were playing really well at Villa, we were wondering that there was a stone wall penalty about eight, and the ref didn't give it. And again, because there could have been a bearish minimum contact to the ball. As soon as that happens, the refs got an excuse not to give it. Because they're doing this strange umpire's cool thing this season, and giving the refs so much more benefit than the doubt, they're not reviewing decisions that they perhaps say would have done. So, the fact that you come back to that will-huge thing and say, "We will get ones that we, you know, Leicester are still..." I mean, that ludicrous steel that Leicester showed, when Matetta was literally hugging the goalkeeper apparently, so therefore, in those circumstances, would have been off-side. But they were argued for the whole season. That he was off-side for that goal. I don't think he was, but that's all we can do all season ago. I don't think he was a penalty. Somebody does think he was a penalty. I think we're in a spell of inexperienced refs at the moment. They're saying to me these kind of things. The fans, though, as you said, the fans that think that refs are kind of biased or whatever, are Arsenal not to go too far away from Palace. But Arsenal has been kicking up a fuss about the red card up at City, and the Deccan Rice red card way before, which obviously was the second yellow. They had two massive decisions to go their way yesterday against Leicester. Again, Jamie Vardy was found in the build-up to their first goal, and colour Fiore should have had a second yellow. It's like, "These things come and go." And that's what Glausner and Essay said on the first day of the season. Well, also, we have come round to our favour. For Man City, after that Arsenal game. For Man City to accuse Arsenal of being dirty and physical. Man City, who are masters of the rotational fail. Man City, who sent the forward through the ball that sent the back's head, which is a straight red in anybody's ring. Let's not get carried away here. We're all getting away with things this season. I think we're just in a period, I know this is unusually grown up for me, but we're just in a period, I think, of adjustment while these referees get the experience that they need, essentially. Yeah, I agree. I don't really want to rake over the gold too much, Joe, because I've sort of referenced them. But the timing of them is bad, and it's essentially, and it goes back to what Salzy said, three errors lead to a goal. It's a combination of slack positioning, bad pass from commander for the first one. Bad marking at the back post for the second one. It's actually in Kettia, the spax trying to pop the ball. When it shouldn't really be, it should be one of the wing backs or the centre backs. It almost seems to me like lack of concentration at a really crucial moment of the game. And it's swung, and then you're going from clinging on to a lead to try and get back into it. And the whole game changes from a couple of minutes of lack of focus. Yeah, it's funny, the two closest Palace players to Neil for that second goal are in Kettia and Kamada. The kind of second... I think it's Jack Harrison who picks the ball out of the air very well, actually, and just takes a whole bunch of Palace players out of the game, and then puts a cross in. And someone like La Croix, who we've paraded so far, is not even in the penalty area for this set-piece opportunity of crowding with Everton players. So yeah, it's not pretty. And I think that all, particularly some of the positioning, I think that's what's been one of my biggest concerns. And I think that comes as a result of the Squarepegs, you know, a Kamada in Wharton, that you need to know which one is going to go forward and go back if I'm going to really simplify it. That is probably a lot more sophisticated than that, obviously, but I found even when we were in control of the ball first half, the way those two operated and who took up the space that somebody, the other, had left by moving forward with the ball was really sloppy. And it led to a lot of some of Everton's best work and breaks came from just a lot of space in behind the midfield, and perhaps also you could apply that to an Idi and Kettia as well as a Kamada set-pieces as well. It's just, yeah, not a pretty goal. Most, yeah, I'd say they're always mistakes in goals that we can see. You know, as good as the first finishes from at Neil, it's because of the opening comes from bad, what, poor possession. So, yeah, very frustrating. You still think the team that we have, there's this firepower in there to recover or maintain a threat. I think the Leicester game was a good example of that, where we can actually, we can outgun sides around us if it's all set up, right? However, I think Sada reports that Sada, I think Leicester's Sada didn't train most of last week. So even him coming off the bench doesn't have the same impact as before, although I did still enjoy his appearance. And then maybe with some of the knocks that we have, the depth is slightly beginning to get tested now with and Kettia coming off for a Jeffrey Schlup, for example, on the right of the dose or front free. Didn't massively work in the same way as it did when he came on against United. So, yeah, the lack of response to that from the players on the pitch, you know, I found some people were having a go at the substitutions made by Glassner. I kind of like him being as proactive as he is generally. But, yeah, we just didn't, the players that you wanted to step up there in that second half, the sort of final half an hour just didn't for me. And it made it quite easy for Everton to defend in Ian. Watching both the goals, and it's difficult on TV. It's like Joe's there, so he gets a view of the whole pitch. But I got the impression watching the goals that if you'd had two out-and-out defensive central midfield players, both those goals would have been stifled at source. And I think that's where you miss someone like Hugh Walton. We saw him doing it on his own last season, that's the trouble. He was a one-man midfield for a lot of love, but he's so much better for him. Even someone like Hugh's, who I guess, I think players would rate Hugh's more highly than fans do, because Hugh's his job is to sort of be in a 30-yard diameter, or radius, or whatever it's called, to just break things up, to nick the ball, to give it to someone else, to make a nuisance of himself. And I think we just kind of, certainly, the second half, we just really lacked that. Yeah, we were slower to the second balls. There is a physicality, Joe's quite right, there is a physicality issue there. The choir helps, Sa helps, and Katia, much as I wanted to play in the centre, he's not a big unit, he's not going to worry people or bully people, and Kamada certainly isn't, and that was so noticeable in the second half, and it was so noticeable as well, and DICE did himself on post-match, that all he did to Stifle Esse was just put one of their midfield players on him, based on that's all it took, and that's not reacting to that, which is quite worrying as well, that all it took was that, because that's where my worry with Esse is this season. He hasn't stepped up to take, he's a senior player now, in games like that, when we're under pressure, you've got to be looking for Esse to take the ball, hold the ball, move the ball forward. Where are you, was fantastic, I agree with you being sold, I think it was a great bit of business, but God, we missed him in that second half, just where are you, buys you that free kick, he buys you that minute of breathing space, he'll get you further up the pitch, he bullies them rather than the other way around, and we lacked that, and whether that was deliberate from Glazner, whether he doesn't, that's not the sort of fault that he wants to play, whether he's only been our manager for 20 odd games, whether he hasn't got used to the physicality, the intensity, I don't know, but in that second half, that's what we needed, we needed a bit of devilman in that second half that we didn't have. Well, let's hope that we've got a bit of devilman in the pod in the second half, because I think it looks like a quick mark there, and thank you very much. I've missed this. I know, two years without that, how have you survived? When we come back, it's three, two, one. So, you want to be a marketer. Welcome back to the Five Year Plan Podcast. It's time for 3-2-1. If you haven't been following this for the last year and a bit, we picked three players in the previous game that played okay, and we give one of them three points, one of them two, one of them one. We taught it over the season, and then I promise to give someone a trophy, and then it doesn't happen. So, JP, apologies. I just haven't got down to the trophy shop yet, but we'll see what happens. Currently, Dean Henderson is leading the list this season with six points. Before we do that though, a quick reminder that Kevin, you will be getting your walking shoes on again for the Palace of Life marathon march. Having just completed, for the Lilly Foundation, a very impressive visit to all London stadiums, was that your warm-up for the marathon march? The reason I did it, and the other, if you know Andy Smart, Andy Smart died last year, a comedian of my generation. I loved Andy, and his funeral was a riotous and joyous occasion, but I didn't know that he had done so much for charity. He kept that quiet, and I just thought to me, "I need to up my game a little bit here. I organize the benefit for Lilly every year, but I thought I need to do something a bit more strenuous." I approached the Lilly Foundation, and they couldn't believe their luck, because initially they went, "Right, we've got a thing for Kilimanjaro, if you want to kill Kilimanjaro." I said, "No, I'm not going to kill Kilimanjaro," and it was Mount Snowden, and it's a lot. I'm a middle-aged man, and I'm not doing any climbing, basically. We ended up doing, with the footballing, we ended up doing, I had momentarily forgotten the marathon march, it was three weeks afterwards. Also, what I love, every club was really, I was the last person on Wimbledon's pitch before it flooded. They were so friendly, they insisted on the one ball coming on the pitch with me, much to the groundsman. They said, "The groundsman, don't mind it." I said, "Don't look happy." He's got a pitch fork in his hand, he doesn't look ever, and typical palaces, Joe mentioned, there's the charity email and all the clubs, and literally, within a day, every other club in London had got back and said, "Yeah, we can do this. You can do that. We can't do this." Palace, nothing. It was literally nothing. I felt like a grass. I had to mention to somebody in the club, I said, "Is there any chance within 10 minutes?" And then eventually, they were brilliant. I was exceptionally emotional when I got about to sell as part, which is a euphemism for really, really tired. But they put on a really wonderful reception for me and the people that were with me, and my face was on a big screen. They gave me this beautiful, beautiful presentation signed pally shirt with Lily Seven on it first, which is great. They let's have a bath free for 45 minutes, very specific. It's 45 minutes. I think I might as well do things in 45 minutes, please. But then, of course, so many people were saying, "Well, you're three weeks time, you'll be back here, wouldn't you? I've been done the marathon." I was like, "Oh, my God, yes, I will." And people keep saying, "Well, it'll be a walk in the park, won't it?" "No, no, no, 63 miles hasn't prepared me for it whatsoever." But I'm just relaxed. You know what, I'm really, unlike you JD, I'm quite, I'm not brilliant at selling myself. We've had this discussion before as well with Joe, when we're doing the walk. It's like, we're all happy to do the walk, the marathon march, and it is a really sociable, fun event. But none of us are happy at asking people just to give us money to do it. We'd much rather, I mean, Julian Jenner is great at it, but he's asking theatrical types. You haven't got a clue. And he's a producer. All they have to do is get people to do stuff. Exactly so. But it's, even now, it's like, we'll be asking people to sponsor us, but I hate doing that. I know. I'm just not unnatural at it. I wish the Irish part of me, the Bob Geldoff me, would just take over and start demanding money. But I can't. You're less, in that regard, you're less Robbie Keenan. No, sorry, less Roy Keenan, more Robbie Keenan. Yeah, exactly. And also, I'm slightly worried, depending on the Liverpool result, because you know, there are factions now, amongst the Palace fans. I can see it. I can see it kicking off somewhere in the middle of a nice partner, sorry, countryside somewhere. We'll be getting ambushed by old Roy, Roy Cidovists, old Roy Hodgson fans. We'll be jumping out on us to say and bring Roy back. So I am looking forward to it. I could have done with another couple of weeks in between. I'll get it all done. Get it all done. Yeah, get all my years walking out of the way. Yeah. That'll be it. And then back to the home, get me some nice, soft, mushy food. Listen, I completely agree. I'm going to do the shout-out for you. And what I've been saying recently with the Marathon March is, if you can donate, brilliant, if you can't, and we completely understand people have got varying situations, if you know someone that might be able to, or you can share it with people that might, then if you could do that, and that's the way of doing your bit. So I'm going to, both links are below for the Marathon March and for your Lily Foundation fundraising as well. That's really kindly to me. But also if there are people out there who can't donate, and of course I understand that from having spent six weeks trying to nudge people for money recently, and if there are people out there who would love to do the walk but can't physically do it, if you want to support, just, if you put the route down, if people come out just to say hello and wave and stuff, that really makes a big difference. Or if people just turn up at Sellers Park to welcome us in. That makes, I mean last year when some of the youngsters from the Down syndrome team were there, it just, it really does lift your spirits when you get people, when you get Palis fans on the way to saying, on you go, that's great, because to be honest, 26 miles of legal sniping and rude jokes from 1970s theatre producers gets it after a while, you're desperate for a normal civilian. It's a combo, isn't it? It's a combo, isn't it? A fancy lawyer and a sitcom. You've got either in the spectrum of humanity. The beauty of this pod is if I was on talk sport now, I'd have to explain if I'm talking about the beauty of this pod is everyone knows exactly who we're talking about. In jokes work on this one, brilliant stuff. Well, best of luck with it to you and all the FYP team. We will keep pumping that link out up until walk day. Kevin, would you like to do the honours with 3-2-1? We just need one nomination for a player that you think has done well this week and then Gerry and I do the same and then we'll try and split the points, but who would you like to nominate? Again, it's difficult having only watched that most of the half hour sky high. It came down to sent it back, which is odd because I was slightly moaning about it. It was between the crime and learner. I'm going to lean towards learner in a literature sort of way. I thought just from what he looked, he's a great back-up. If you can, Waldi and Klein, we've got eight sent-backs now. I think he's a fantastic back-up to have. The only trouble is we shouldn't have to rely on him already as a sent-about. I think we need against Liverpool, we'll talk about it. I think we have to start learner in midfield with all. I really do. Maybe even three in midfield. I don't know. Learner would be my pick for Saturday against Everton. Lovely stuff. Joe, you go next and then hopefully you haven't got the player I've got because I'm really struggling for options this week. We'll see what happens. I'm going to my back-up already because I too would have put Geoffsson-Lerma forward. Everton hooked their right-sided winger at half-time. I think his name is Lindstrom or something. That was all down to the good worker Geoffsson-Lerma. Really dealt with him handily and was one of the more adventurous passes in the first half as well when we were trying to hit Everton on the counter. There was some really good work from Lerma across that game which in turn gave players Mitchell a little bit more confidence going forward. He would have got my vote, but having already seen that he's been put forward, I'll go Laquat again. Sorry, JD. Slightly easier case to make than when I put it forward last week. I think he's passing his pace, his strength in the air. A lot of the good work defensively was from him and I guess everything bad defensively was in spite of his efforts, not because of it. I, particularly in the second half even, when we are starting to push, his recovery pace was very, very handy against a player like, well, then Jay, I think it was another player long-time admirer, admired by Dougie Friedman, and I could see why from his performance, but Laquat's pace nullified him somewhat and then of course there was that huge chance for the core-ray in the second half, which Laquat gains a few yards on and takes it off his feet with a little toe that prevents what would have been a clear free one and game over. Just another, each week that comes, he looks better and it's what I try, I'm trying to claw for optimism at the moment and one of my main factors to stay confident is that, I think, Kevin, you touched on how much the starting 11 has changed this season for various reasons. Once some of these players get settled and say the back free gets settled and then even the midfield, you will see the players are good enough that once the side, we work out what that is or the manager works out what that is, I think we'll be okay. Maybe not threatening the upper echelons of the table, but I don't think we should be panicking just yet and plays like Laquat and his growing confidence and performances each week since his arrival are an example of a reason to stay optimistic. It's changing, I have to say, it's good to hear Joe talk about Laquat and pace there because having seen him in real life at Celeste Parr, it's not the first thing you would have associated with in the games that he initially started in. Because Richard has been the pastiest cent of that. So to hear that we've got another option in Laquat who was physically very big and he's also pasty. That's really good news and would indicate that Glasgow is really keen to bring him in. Yeah and he had that one recovery in the second after, didn't he? I can't really chase down, but he chased down. Oh, I can't believe it. I think he got a typo to it. Yeah, so Laquat was also on my list as well. So I'm sort of left with the sort of scraps really. I mean, I guess gay he has scored, so I guess that serves points. But I wouldn't, I thought he was fine again slowly getting into that sort of back, centre, back three position. I can't, I obviously can't give commander a point, gave away the, I thought I actually thought first 45 we did okay. I would love at one point this season to give commander a point. I'd love to do that. But I'm aware it's not going to happen this week. I think really from the rest of the team, the only person that probably was better than a five or a six out of ten for me, again, was Eddie and Kettia. I thought he really put himself about, tries hard. He does get back, you know, we saw him nearly get back from Neil with that second goal. He puts defensive duties. It's not quite looking for him with the other forwards, but I like his effort. And I think I'm happy for him to have the one point. And then maybe you guys battle out for the three and the two. But I think Kettia deserves Lorditz for his start at Palace, mainly his efforts and his energy. And I think the goals will come. Can I mention two of us that they're not technically players? This might be the only chance I get to crowbar this in. The two things are getting no points, and that's the kids. We've got to stop referring to that, awake it as an iconic, awake it. Until we start winning in those kids, I think we need to go back to Clara and Blue, and white with red and blue sash, because I'm blaming the, I wouldn't blame the players for going and looking that awake it. So I'm not putting on. I don't see why I should make an effort in that. It looks like a mid-eighties championship kick with a giant bird ironed on it. So that's out of the way. I think Laquois has to get, Loma has to get the three, surely, doesn't he? I would say, although having said that, maybe I should know, actually, I think he should defer to Joe, because he was actually at the game. So I think if Joe says Laquois had such a good game, he was there, he should get the three. Yes, I'm only really putting him forward as a result. Was I being, was I trying to be clever with the Lerman nomination? I said, as low as Jadie, as Loma, this is cheeky, has Loma got any points this season? No. I've attempted to give him the three then, because he has stepped in and take his opportunity then, because I don't think he's had as many minutes as perhaps he would have anticipated when he left in May for this coming season. And, you know, it's a long season. Everyone will be needed. And he's shown that whenever he's called upon, he's actually a very steady player. And I agree with you, Kevin, I think I'd want to see if the same selection of players are available, I'd want to see him starting as Loma Paul this Saturday. Well, there you go. Okay. The Lerman gets the three. Laquois gets the two, and Kettia gets the one. That puts Lerman second, our third on three points. It puts Laquois, and then Kettia both on four points. So they are second, joint of water, and Henderson was six. Lerman's joint with Mitchell and Gaheon three, and then there's a bunch of them on two as well. So there we go. Shaping up, I mean, by this point last season, JP, I think JP scored his hat trick against Plymouth and then just like never, never lost top spot. We were desperate for points, but there's been a nice spread so far. And Kettia, thanks very much for playing your first 3-2-1. Hope you enjoyed it. I loved it. It's a little reminder of how much this pod has progressed in the last season. Right. Yeah, the features now are unreal. That actually wraps up part one this for early week episode. Kett, will you join us for later in the week for our question special? I'd love to. That'll be out on Thursday morning, but thanks very much for everyone for listening to this. We'll see you on Thursday. Goodbye. This podcast is part of the Sports Social Podcast Network.
