Where have you been well? He's been dealing with injunctions for happily married celebrities who can't be named like that one wasn't I wasn't involved in that one at all No, I've just been winching at the back of the I'm so much easier good as per good Okay, before we get into Palace's historic win. We're not historic but Palace's win against Norwich Natural win in the league. Yeah, you remember yeah good And JC I yes the global research and brand consultancy from so London Visit JC hyphen I s dot com I will We're waiting well three weeks to do that well done. You nailed it You know that thank you. Thank you. Can I imagine there are a lot of confused Portuguese people There were a few confused Portuguese people good before we talk about Palace. I wanted to quickly mention that You can rate us on iTunes got on the iTunes app and rate us and help us climb up the table of the charts table for a Lady was a good rate. Yeah, good. Yes. I think you do like a five star rate to do a five star Give us a nice little comment and help us bump up the table. Yeah, don't listen to the rest of it Just do just do that. Yeah, just yeah, that's a win and if you are having problems We said this from previous pods downloading the pods if you're listening to it now You're probably not having problems because we need to get the word out there If you have no someone is having problems It's probably because they're trying to download it on the iPhone Podcast app don't use that because that app's a bit broken use a different app on the iPhone We suggest overcast or down downcast or tinder. Yeah, as long as that's a rating Our sons just go on tinder and it whatever is just for comedy purposes His little whatever the message to put is I want a free dinner Because he's put a picture of a puppy up there as well as he thought that might help Okay, but anyways thinking of actual successes Palace one one. Oh against my first league win of 2016 Wow the last team in the official nine Period leads with the pyramid not just the top four professional is it not in the northern hemisphere? No, all the just the nine leagues in the period the official nine leagues in the pyramid with the last team to win I heard I heard it was also in the top in the top five leagues in Europe as well Unconfirmed, but it could well me Which is great that would have been really hard to work out before the problem. I know that might be a start Well, yeah, and he's asked that man. We won though, but one and my question to you guys is It wasn't a fantastic display from Palace, but it was a moment of magic from punching who we missed for a little bit But also has been out of sorts How do we get punchin doing this more often Kevin? How do we get punchin bringing the magic to the game more often that we know he can do it's very interesting Gordon Strack I was very interesting on goes on Sunday talking about How many times of Palace been able to field MacArthur function? Blassy Cabay Wickham very few times even before the bad run started as very few times and said any team would struggle if you're losing Three out of five of those players and then five out of five. You're gonna struggle and punches come back It wasn't just a finish to the goal with the build the his actual movement for the goal was really really good The way it goes to him behind two defenders and you can see how much it it meant to him I it's an intro. How you getting to it again? I don't know but clearly I think increasingly punching has been a maybe more than missed than we thought he then we thought he was because He did look out of sorts before he was injured and we all wondered whether the injury was a result of him trying too hard or Running too much, but he certainly is a player That belongs in the Premier League and has got that little bit of inventive skill, but I You just hope that That is a big weight off his shoulders as well as everybody else's and I think what you do how you do it is you pick him You tell him that he's gonna be Picked for every game and he reacts accordingly. I think that's clearly a player who thrives on a Confidence and be responsibility. I think the really I think the responsibility even more than the confidence I also think as I always spoke a lot on the pod about how we thought the dipping form maybe I'll something to do with kabai coming in and maybe kabai was taking a lot of the responsibility and being the playmaker and I think Kabai's been I wouldn't say out of sorts, but it's not been the play. He was And I think especially Albeit watching on a on a dodgy TV screen on on Saturday. I'll be sorry Kabaya game was seemed to drift in and out of the game on Saturday and I you know I guess punch coming back and knowing the importance of the game knowing the importance of the result he you know thought right this is my chance and I think you know and he and he took it and he What we've always wanted is somebody to take the game by the scruff its neck And I think he did that even though it was that little moment of magic And it's what we've always said about the panelist team We'd we've been lacking all season some of you could just turn and just do something just without out of the blue and all the Lot of the teams of the family who've got that player We already had that player all season and I think punch and prove that he can be that player And I think it's that for me was the most exciting thing was the fact that we had somebody was well We all know what could blast can do. We know it's a hard to do We know it could buy can do we know all great players could do Punch and did something out of the ordinary on Saturday, and that's what won the game So I think the thing we punch is he's he's always worked hard But when he's in he does the really inventive stuff in the final third where it matters whereas kabaya We know kabaya's a good player, but we've discussed it long and hard. We haven't seen the sort of creative impetus that we thought we would see and When he has made good passes they tend to be parties from deep that you know look good in the good parties But they're setting up somebody else. It's still quite a long way from go. Whereas punching It's just much more dynamic much more positive and tends to look ahead And tends to rather and he can run with the boys. Well, that's the other thing that we've lacked He's got the ability to pass the ball But also to take it to take it in a tight situation and run at their central defenders He likes to shoot he likes to shoot as well. Yeah, he can shoot and he can shoot and a lot of our players are sometimes quite nervous So just don't want to shoot. Yeah, hmm. He's more direct as well, isn't he? And I think like We need as Kevin said in previous pods You just need some people driving at the defense sometimes You need someone to literally literally carry the ball from one third to the next and we know punching can do that But why Andy has he not been doing that in the previous part of the season and now as we previous seasons in the latter part Is he finding sort of finding his feet? Well players go in and out of form You know, even if they're not suffering periods out of the team I punch and has had because of injury, you know, it's a rare player who stays in form for 38 games and fit those 38 games and You know, he's come back into a team that was low on confidence and that was playing probably more and more Directing style because of that lacking confidence aspect to it and he's come in and he's one of the few players who we've got who Can retain the ball between the opposition midfield and their defense. He's one of the few who is able to always buy himself some time and some space and You know, even before we went out There was that stat that you quoted on this podcast about him still creating chances the thing that captures, you know fans imaginations and their eyes is Someone's who scores goals. So as soon as he comes back in and scores a goal, you know, it wasn't that he was playing I don't think manifestly badly earlier in the season He's probably playing a little bit below his part, but I just I still think he's a fantastic player I think he's probably in the top 10 Palace players that there have been in terms of technical ability and impact at the very top level They've been other people who've been more cult hero E they've been people who have played longer and with more sort of fabled moments for the club But you struggle to pick a player who in the top league for Crystal Palace has had more of an impact than Jason Ponchin I think I think it's a really interesting point that we forget sometimes that it's like race horses Sometimes there's no apparent reason why they've ever been race and sometimes a footballer He might have a knock that he doesn't even he's not gonna wear himself. He might might let a rail of his girlfriend But there's all sorts of things go and we know that he's a very Intense person. We know that he can be quite difficult to manage apparently, but you know, but even again Gordon Stratton was raving about a lot of street. He was raving about his ability. He's a genuine Premier League player, but sometimes you because you're right. We do this year. We go. What's the reason why is this happening? Sometimes just people have off days And it's simple as that and we look for different means and sometimes he comes like he said he comes back into a team where That's four got four people different to the last team he played in and it's just playing a slightly different system Of course since he's been away They've got increasingly more tense and nervous as each game goes by so he comes back in fully fit Where the others are sort of looking to play on the back foot a bit scared, so it's it's yeah, we've always said We've got something on in on the homestale line city on said we've got a top 18 But not a top eight squad. Yeah, and punching is one of those players that without punching without the kafra Without kibai playing really well without ballasti Hao playing really well then of course We're gonna struggle and is it did mention it there about cut heroes could could punch and be in the The category of cult hero I mean in the way that he's clearly a Croiden lad You saw the emotion of sash day loves playing for palace. It means a lot to him I think I mean to call hero I think what happened on sash day will as certainly take him up the notch a little bit without doubt I think you know, I think he's definitely up there I think the fact he is one of our own as we like to sing, you know, and it was an amazing thing He did and I think anybody's gonna forget that we've had a terrible run We don't wanna all flip in yeah, you know you can't we'll all it's one of those moments We're gonna when in a few years time when we sat around this time you go back on this day But yes, I do think he has the ability to do it, and you know, let's let's hope he can do that over the next few I think it's only recently it's only in the past three or four months that he's be he was one of the most divisive figures The Palace face yes, he calls as many arguments as any player and those of us were massive fans of his couldn't understand Why people didn't didn't see what we saw him and also the thing about being a local That's a fairly new information for a lot of us It's only sort of now that they're starting to remind people that he is a local boy And that he's a really good really good role model for for some of the younger kids from from different backgrounds in it But you could see any Palace fan watching out sadly watching his reaction It brings tears to your eye because when you see somebody When it means as much to them as it means to us and God knows we've seen enough palestines We've gone through the motions and don't look like they care and you saw how much he mentioned and for whatever reason You I can't recall seeing a player cry What's brilliant as well isn't and maybe it's a sign of that there's more emotional maturity just in the world And there was 20 30 years ago. No one took the piss out of him. No, what's what's the matter with him? Everyone understood what it meant to him and the run that we'd been through and that was a real cathartic moment And it was brilliant and it was wonderful that everyone picked up on it And yeah, even though the memes that went round were kind of like this is great rather than what I need it And it's it's brilliant to see because we know that he's a What sort of background he's from and he's not he's not somebody that we've associated with being sent the mentor or Two or four so for him to react like that was Clearly matters to him. We're talking matters to the fans. I mean, it's of course that all fans ever want to see It's cloudy around the area so the brilliant thing He said if we get beaten by a better team fine We get beaten by a better team and they've got to prove that they're better than us And the fact is all any football fan wants to see it's because there will be teams that beat us because they're better than us But all you want to see is that your players just give absolutely everything then if they lose they lose But if they if they do what what punched him and that's the one thing you can honestly say throughout this whole run That for all that lots of players individually of coming for criticism and rightly so you could never say any of them have stopped trying Or stop being committed and sometimes they've been over committed because they're trying too much But you could never lay that at their door They've been wanting and all sorts of areas as has the management without a doubt But it's the players have never stopped trying and you could see You can see afterwards you can see where meant to all of them afterwards you could that you know and and also what's important is you saw I think we've allodized his reaction yesterday when he said This is when there's only one team we can catch them. You saw how the ice was just distraught He's so flat after that yesterday part you look like he'd been through the ringer on Saturday But you saw what an important result it was to all of them and not not just in the fact that we finally got that monkey off Her back, but in what it meant for our league position because that's the other bizarre thing I was working with producers days and everything fan. You made a really good point. He said you're unhappy He said you've you haven't won a game in 116 days, and you're only two points behind us. Yeah Yeah, so imagine how unhappy everything fans are when you've been the shittest team in the top nine divisions And you could go 12 from on we can go 12 from Wednesday night we're going goal difference Yeah, so I don't know what that says about the rest of the Premier League, but it does indicate that The first part of season was actually genuinely much better than we've maybe gave it credit for At the time it was over performance. Yeah, whether it was or not, but we I don't maybe we Spent too much time saying this is no performance rather than saying actually this is this is great I'm such a cushion of points that we've gone through that and we still but then we've been there when the corresponding underperformals came I think people were getting a little bit into the sort of self-indulgent navel guys and a bit too far ago You know, this is a terrible team They look like a championship team in the making without taking into account the fact that there were you know A rubs of the green going against us and you know the fact that there will be human error with some different decisions So some of that stuff can go against you There was all this sort of you know narrative that Palace had bested to go down when it was never anything more than a very slight Possibility the performance gets no idea. It was great to see us get a win It was great to see punching back in the scene playing well getting a goal It wasn't that much better a performance and a lot of what we put in these arguably In that match, you know, you end up with sort of there's been debate whether or not it's a penalty on the ladies push or not You can you know, you probably argue that one way or the other But whereas in previous weeks with like the bent decade incident this time it goes for us, you know Hennessy comes out late and manages to spill it yet again. That ends up not being converted by Norwich because it falls to the power to pass Patrick Bamford, you know, it's these small margins that have been going against us for a couple of months Perhaps undeservedly site and now finally will start to turn have started We talked about after the Liverpool game we talked about half jokingly about, you know Referee's probably get together and say good come live and share a bad luck since then we've had the Reading penalty. Yeah, which Was 50/50. Yeah, we've had the sending off at Westtown, which we debated last week I still think they were wrong to rescind that but we've had that which was again went in our favor That penalty went in our favor. So we've had three Massive decisions Call it To me to me I Didn't think It didn't occur to me. It was opposed to me. It looked as from where the referee was it looked like the Norwich player kind of went towards Delaney rather than the other way around and it looked shoulder to shoulder and It's interesting because it was only when he got up and started moaning the rest of the Norwich players Yeah, sort of saw it as a penalty. You'd be disappointed if it was given I paid off Sunday for my new Sunday team and one of our defend I paid right back and for the last three minutes and struggled But the our centre back did the exact same thing one of their players It was a shoulder barge in the box at the ball came across and no one said anything No one claimed anything refuge or anything. So maybe it's context. I think it's the Norwich player had been in front of him Arguably, but the Norwich player was at his side So it kind of looked like Delaney just couldn't but it might have been one James that if we'd have had it at last minute We'd have been calling for it. Well, of course. Yeah, you could have gone either way, you know either way You know and as Kes just said, you know, sometimes these go for you. Sometimes they don't we're lucky lucky Well, it's not lucky But in the last sort of big three decisions have gone our way a few have gone the other way and that's why and it's There would say or evens itself out whether it actually does or not I don't know but there's an element of truth in that saying obviously, you know And maybe it was a pound and if it'd gone the other way if it even been the other way around we'd be signing money that it's you know I'd say fair play to Norwich manager as well for not making a big thing about it. Yeah They're just saying it was I didn't really see it was a challenge. He said it was a penalty But I've got really much to comment on so I think that was in many ways that was a I Was surprised by how nervous We looked we look very very hard. Yeah, cuz I generally thought that after the back of the West Ham result They would sort of be really on the front foot. I mean obviously it's it's it's out It's just sounds like this is such a tourism. That's a much worse result for Norwich because Norwich Clearly with their tails up clearly thought that yeah, we were there to be taken and That yeah, but it was a shocking result for Newcastle some because we couldn't have asked her anything more on Friday if we'd said Yeah, we know what we want to happen. We want to win those two lose and the fact is Just watching Newcastle and Sunderland play yesterday. They don't look like teams that are capable of No winning the three four games that they need they simply you can't see that I can't and this time last season Lester We're well on the way to there. They're fantastic Like what seven out of nine you just can't see I don't know Newcastle has to play anvila You can't see what you know, I thought for a team that had won a couple of games and were on the up Look, I thought look quite poor. They didn't we don't offer that wasn't I was quite surprised how poor they were actually I thought they come out fighting a lot more because it not they meant more to them than to us, but you know They had less points to us. Yeah, but the fact is we did mention this on last week's book the their result against Man City was a really good result but West Brom had literally nothing to play for and everyone say that was a much worse game than their one on Saturday There's that one chance between them and they beat Newcastle So and obviously you have to remember that until the West Brom then they lost seven out of eight Away games scoring only one or two girls So they're not suddenly a good team But I thought it was helpful for us that they thought they were suddenly a good team and that they don't have that momentum So I'd have been I'd been more worried if they hadn't won for five six games because that's sort of game We really struggled well, they hadn't won that sell her for 20 years Again, which is that everyone brought up for a game with all that's gonna win Also, we will because we knew that Banford we all thought Banford was going to school. Yeah, but the Banford was Banford, but the thing is that players do know it's like our record at West time has been Decent recently. Yeah, so when you look it you go in context. That's fine. And but players know somebody was told in Norway's Well, you haven't won it since 1995. Yeah, and he do suddenly then and even if that puts like two percent Of the uncertainty into the head, but also somebody would have said to Norwich probably sort of lost the last six that sell us But of course, yeah, exactly so that was in and That was as important as anything that we didn't lose that. Yeah, that we didn't go to cuz that would have been our record Nothing wouldn't it seven On the spin defeat it would have been we look so nervous. I was surprised out as Kev just alluded to I was very surprised How nervous we were actually really really nervous and I just thought you got the home crowd there. You know, you're home It's a six-point term, you know in vertical ones, but I was literally a six-pointer really Like it wasn't literally three points for the figuratively No, it was as close to a six-pointer as you can get yeah, I'll get talk spot How'd you Went out of his way to praise the fans afterwards as well. Yeah for the first time in the long times he was really and the reaction was Fantastic, and we did start with Gail was we predicted? Okay. Well, that was one of my notes would take because I wasn't here for the last pod obviously although. I'm sure it was fantastic. I mean I listened to it. It was fantastic. Well done But Gail, I mean Gail is the subject we've talked about a lot of times on the pod He finally got a start. Do you think I personally feel like I was actually a bit of a better impact off the bench But do you think he earned another start or do you think really? I don't think the The one thing that neither of it none of us foresaw talking about it on last week's pod that Gail would be in at the expense of Sahar which it was the the Sako and Gail would start up. I think we all thought it would be Gail was to the Sako and Balesi and Sahar so that was slightly odd, but I agree with you. I do think he's a better impact player and and again He's better as what part of the two so his movement is just fundamentally not Intelligent enough to unlock a defense when they're not tired yet You know first 60 minutes when when an opposition defense in the Premier League They're all now, you know physically intimidating and world-conditioned in the first 60 minutes of a match He just doesn't have a great deal of impact unless there's a fundamental error made by someone and something drops to him And yes, there's always that possibility that that might happen But quite often he will still you know remain a passenger in those sorts of games Do I think there's a place for him in the squad? Undeniably because you look at the number time He's come off the bench and made you know some sort of impact on the time that he's been a palace There seems to be a suggestion in my head at least that that is something that you know You want to retain for his apparently just signing a new contract, but did he did he play in the West Brom game at home? Well, we want to lose them. I don't think we've probably lost We want to know but you remember that was a because that was the The game where we just we just passed them to death and we just kept running behind them and then from Where's our play to play? Yeah But then from 70 minutes on we scored the two goals quite late but from 70 minutes on West Brom looked Totally out on their feet because we had run and I guess I would have done this game It's whoever it was, but we just ran whoever was up front Just the movement was just taking their center backs all over the place and we just exhausted their back form And you kind of think if Gayle can do that and just constantly chase them down Harry then which he did at home Team May 90 did a very good one Yeah, yeah, so he's always I don't think anyone at Palace has solved the conundrum of what is best You always get these flashes where you think oh here. We go. We're gonna get something out of him now I don't know if nothing happens like it. Yeah, there's a lot of sort of a false dawn to it with Gail Yeah, I don't think girls of player who thrives on responsibility in the way that punching does I think like you said I think Gail's a great option To come on when you need to go direct and then just get a flick and get him behind But even then he's kind of like it It doesn't always look okay. Gail did start the West Brom. Yeah, so I know what I'm talking about I just had a feeling that was one of his better games because he he was really mobile in that game. I think Yeah, yeah, well that was a great good team form. Yeah, that was that was goodbye's best game But also well their flashes of it, you know, he was by all accounts brilliant at the May 90 game at home that I missed Where he played that sort of line role. Yeah, he was on its own and apparently was, you know, incredibly mobile got that pitch Well linked up well, but I mean the problem is that for every, you know, one performance like that where he started There've been three where he started where he's not really made a great deal of impact from the start I was really surprised to find last week as you you wouldn't have known us Mike came out with a good stick cuz it's because I just blithely said that no spell is spent said well He tends to score when he plays, but he doesn't he's scoring records actually Quite poorly Premier League. Is it really? Yeah, okay. He hadn't scored a goal for a long time So he's it's it's it's goals to make it record is as bad as anybody else right? Which surprised me because I thought I thought and everybody else did he scores, but it actually doesn't much But he does it does seem to get himself in positions. Mm-hmm. That's you know, that's the thing It is, you know, and he doesn't seem to be again. I think I'd be late on, you know, yeah, yeah, you're right And part is obviously not convinced by him even though I did start him. He's obviously not there's definitely something there And there's definitely a role for him But the question is what role and does it fit in with the way paths playing at the moment Yeah, I think the thing is as well if Connor stays fit for around 10 15 20 games There's no way that twice ever starting any of those magazine might may well come and replace him to sort of change up The sort of shape of the team or to do a like for like even but yeah, he's never starting ahead with Again though because gay was an option you'd like to keep because you know, you keep we come on and then just change it to long because we can Knocking it on to go. It was a really good option. Yeah, we and we need to keep girl because we need yeah I would like to need we need the squad. You know, I can go with and there'll be times where we need to play like him Yeah, I think you know the more primitive experience you get as you still only young But I think he's a sort he's would be a quality squad player whereas there are others. Yes Wouldn't okay speaking of other squad players. I think it's fair that we give a nod to me They didn't act who I personally think what was was man in a match and was absolutely fantastic I think we also have to give a nod to Suarez or who came in for a lot of criticism who's done well But jeddonak and we had this conversation Three or four weeks ago when we all said thanks very much me It's time to move on but and I think I do think certainly was the ideal situation for him like in the trenches with the bullets firing against a fairly limited team, but he played well at western eight he's Well, I don't know if he surprised us all, but he's reminded us what a good player He can be in that sort of situation and also he's just his leadership qualities and he's I think I think he's been much more vocal In the last couple of games. I think he's talking to referees more than he used to I think he's talking to the other players more than he used to so Well, he's had a bit of a run, hasn't he? Yeah, we haven't had for a long time It was a perfect game for him. Yeah, wasn't it really but it's interesting Yeah, I should I should mention we we got big Chris's on Twitter because our lad Matt that runs our Twitter account who is in America and watches the games on TV so he can do up to date Tweets didn't include jeddonak in the man of the match pole Where's everyone at the game? I think because of really the best player, but James you watched it on TV as well I was on TV and I looked at Twitter after the game and saw the list of the four players That were a matter of action. I was good. Okay. Yeah didn't even think about jeddonak and then saw the barrage of abuse The FIP were getting yeah for not including jeddonak. I was a bit surprised and I spoke to a few people Since who were at the game Including your good self and everyone saying he had a great game It just proves to me that you watch a game on TV and you don't know, you know He had a good game for on watching it on a TV on a laptop. He had a good game He definitely did not come across as being man of the match at all I wasn't swayed by the commentary because I was listening to Swedish commentary. Yeah, so and it was all a bit it was all a bit chef-like Little job for everyone there, but but it doesn't It didn't it didn't come across as him being man of the match at all But is it the thing is the thing that kesus kes was saying it's a leadership college. It's the talking It's the talk to everybody. It's good. They're the things that you don't see on TV Well, that was my question. I see the ball You see the ball and wherever the ball is it is an indication that jeddonak actually does a lot more maybe Andy than he gets credit for He's gonna be always I think a slightly divisive plan that there are certain people who really you know Fundamentally now see our role as a team and as a club in that league as having changed Who probably view him as being a hark back to the year in which we played like the Pulitzer team like that sort of, you know outlier that was sort of busting in on someone else's party in gay crashing the Premier League and Those those people quite often like the idea now about having a more mobile and a better passing and you know more functional I haven't fluid midfield, but you know, they're not always gonna be fit And he is I think one of those players who because of how he plays and because of the nature is game If he doesn't have the running games when he first comes back in because he hasn't got that natural technical ability to rely upon he will look awful You know, he did look awful when he first came back into the team for us this year Just because he didn't have that sharpness and if you you played the role that he does Because so much of it is about the work that you do off the ball You do need to have have had around the games now whether or not you would want us to accommodate Somebody does have sort of those clear flaws in his on ball game for the sake of that off ball game I don't know I mean I certainly think that some of the criticism he's had's been a little bit unwarranted Even when he did first come back in and I think when you've earned as much capital as you should have as a player like him with The history that you've got with Palace and the fact that you've demonstrated what your sort of natural strengths are and what your flaws are There should have been a little bit more of accommodation from the fans in their views of him But I still think there's a scored role for him to play it if he's happy to and again It is a difficult thing is you talk about squad role, but it's it's a squad role where he needs a run of games And you don't always I suppose I suppose that's the difficulty with a difficult shot But unlike Dwight Gail who you can bring on as an impact player you can't bring gender because an impact player Yeah, because he's he's not gonna have the impacts Well, I've hard you did try a plan like that in the season and time we'd bring him off like the last 20 minutes The short stuff up and it didn't always work because of that. Yeah, exactly. He's not a problem and it's a problem Players every team has got is that everyone goes well, he's he's not can tell or drink war Why haven't we got every every other team in the Premier League and why haven't we got somebody runs like they do? And bear in mind the Leicester didn't know they are two players But he can't but that's not gender that's game No, that's fantastic pointing me front at the back for tell him not to move in 20 I just what he can do, but he's not he hasn't got that energy and but he was never that box-to-box players never somebody could carry the ball His job's always been Windable wind attack or give it to somebody close to you can do better things with it But I think he should be praised because he he must know What is placed in the pecking order in the team is he must know that if everybody's fit He doesn't start and he's never so he comes in and he gives He does what he does to the best of his ability and it's really interesting. Let's talk into a West hand fan today who's talking about the game last season and he's just saying all his mates with a fair plate of gender you know even with the elbow and it's not if you can't bully him you can't intimidate him and I think We are a stronger team because he does he is the sort he looks like he's saying to other players You do is that you do it as a hard again. Yeah, we're gonna we're gonna have words and he used to 30 He's talking he's talking to the referee all the time and he's standing up for the other players And you do you do need that But the trouble is and it's interesting what you say about watching the one telly Even sometimes in the ground you he's like party used to be as a player You can't really spot what he what it is he does because what it is he does is Yeah, it's very it's very I'm flamboyant and he really proved it watching the game on the TV screen and here Everybody's comments afterwards. Yeah, and I was in you know, I wish I'd seen the Jen lack of old in a sense Well, that's how it's coming across some people Yeah, and I'm really glad he did that because if you said to me if you spoke to me after the game I said he was all right He actually played one of his bad games this season wasn't definitely not matter much But I'm pleased that he was and it proves a game that we need him We need and you know, we were moaning about him. I'm not moaning about him on the pot But we were saying we were not we were saying Even the gender lack of old didn't hit parties more than 20 No, and was slow and slowed the slow to game down if we were trying to do slick passing and Didn't carry the ball more than fit, but that's what he did and that's but that's game on Saturday needed some delight Now if if you haven't been fit Or if you wasn't playing for the plate players were fit and work that would would we have had the performance? We had I don't know I don't know but it definitely needed a player like Jen I get needed somebody in the middle orchestrate through shouting and through getting stuck in and through just bringing as I said It earlier on about punch. How he dragged everybody on by that bit skill I guess what Jen. I did he did the same thing just by being vocal and just by being Face and also let's not forget. He's a big big physical presence. Yeah at both ends of the pitch as well I'll be beard. He's in pose. Yeah, but no just the size of him as well and sort of defensively Defending free kicks and attacking free cubes. Yeah, he's a really useful one. How about I think ultimately if we want if we Have aspirations of consistently finishing in a higher position and we have and we probably will this season You probably do need upgrades on players like Jen Mac, but he would be still a fantastic sign for any team Who's just coming up or any team in the bottom for Newcastle would have been far better off signing a player like him And that of itself is deserving of respect because he's that's all part and because he can react in the way He does to a versity and has done repeatedly for Palace and I think perhaps you know not all standing all the limitations He's perhaps you know some fans have lost sight of that He's not the only one in this god that he's not great. No, you could argue that there's only four or five You don't really so it's not just him. Well speaking of speaking of four or five and he alluded to earlier And I want to round off part one of this with a bit of a stat because I know you guys like it And talking about Has actually this whole run come down to a bit of misfortune with injuries because the chap who tweeted us and his name was Devin Mendenhall And he did a bit of research into four key players at Palace and how we did with them And without them and those four key players are Punchin, Balassi, Zaha, and Kebai Not MacArthur just is for you ever interesting and with with them with the four of them in the team We played 15 games a season one 26 points, which is 55 percent without them 17 games is that without all of them or one of them or any of them I believe it's without all of them without all of them 17 games 12 point return 24 percent return. So is that an indication that actually maybe we've been a bit unlucky? And we do actually rely on our on our big game players. Well, not the fact that it's spinner style though, can't you? Yeah, it's not unlucky to have a not have a stronger squad That's not luck and the fact is if you look at Lester Lester had to be remarkably lucky that they've kept the core of that team and that if Lester had lost Marez Cante Vardy for a long period of time, their squad's not good enough And if we'd have kept this core? Yeah, and they wouldn't be where they were if we'd kept, you know, if Lee hadn't scored that goal against the other idiot But the fact is it's a great step, but the fact is it indicates how shallow our squad is Yes, because if you want to thrive in the Premier League, you look at Tottenham Tottenham squad is fantastic because they've got basically they've got two first teams And we simply haven't got that, and it just if we want, and Andy's, I know Andy gets sick because people think he's on the romantic or He's I know, but he's just like Andy's right and we do have to go out the bullet and say there's a lot of players that we have to say Thanks, you've been brilliant, but you're a squad player at best and it indicates again that our transfer window was piss poor For whatever reason, and it indicates that our squad isn't simply isn't deep enough and but Oddly, at the start of the season, we all thought that we had a really good squad and it changed parts that we haven't But any team, if you take MacArthur Avenue and Stracken again, MacArthur was the one that Stracken was really going on about what a good player is If you take five of your best players out, of course you've got a stronger goal, and I think possibly the only consolation is that we didn't lose any of the back four For any link for time, because that might have been even worse because we'd simply, we'd even shorter recover. Kelly's only covered really, if you think that Hangarline's probably God love him, there's another one on that list of people that have been really good players But even saying that when Hangar did come in with a few points of games all over the season, he was immense, we were all like city sprays Again, that was when we were thinking we had a great squad Yeah, but every time, you know, I had a struggle, I mean every time, the one thing I've always thought about Pajun, I think with him here is one of the reasons he seems In my view to sometimes get his really streaky runs, I mean we've spoken about it in other aspects in previous weeks But one of the things that he seems to really know who is best at Lebanon, how he wants to play them, and what manner he wants to play them But there doesn't seem to be always a huge amount of sort of contingency playing, what if he's out, what am I going to do then, how am I going to reshape the player if those two are out, if those three are out And because of that we've looked a little bit, you know, like we've been sort of plastered together towards, you know, the end of this run and when the injury's been really starting to hit deep So that's the first thing, second thing is, one thing that just strikes me with recruitment, and we went out in the summer and we signed all these sort of, you know, players who are very good but not necessarily in the weakest positions Or the positions where, you know, we had a glaring sort of deficiency, there's this great book called The Numbers Game, you saw about sort of stats and film and stuff And one of the fundamental arguments he makes now is that it's worth more points to a team if they upgrade their weakest position and get a better player in that one weakest position Then it is if they get someone like you could buy in a position where they're okay, do it, okay, and they've been, I think, certain instances where we've not always looked throughout the squad and said, what's our weakest position in terms of first choice cover, first choice And then try to bolster in that manner, it's always been that slightly paged US sort of recruitment style, right, we'll recruit for the first team but we won't look about the whole mix And I think if we're going to really push on in the summer, we perhaps need to get that balance a bit better Well, I think the other thing as well with pallets is that if you look at Leicester, Leicester had had, did have to bring players in It's no easy way of saying that, but if Leicester had been in a situation where they needed to bring players in, they've got such a fixed system That all those players would have just stepped in like for like, they would have known exactly what their job is with the system, well, pallets haven't There is no, you can't really point to the style of pallets, so you can't just go right, he's out, so we'll bring somebody in to do exactly the same job, maybe not as good at it So you can't, it's like a blast he's out, so we'll bring Sacco in to do what a blast he does, but you don't quite know what a blast he does because he's not got a fix for a second Well, you know, but there's no fixes, you don't go right, Leicester have got that system and that style of play, so whoever comes in, he just knows exactly what to do because they train, they shadow him all the way So when players, our players come in and they're not quite sure what role they've got because it's a bit, apart from the back five, it's always been really fluid, you're never quite sure or not, you can't point to one way of playing, so they'll have right, the party's four, three, three, four, two, because it simply isn't So, and what happens, so that means that when players are injured, somebody else comes in, he tries to sort of tinker with the shape to accommodate the players that we got available One thing we won't think of it is the format of the pod, because the next part is... Oh, he's matched fit isn't he, matched fit? I'm just doing this on my own, I had to think for about ten minutes for this, with him it's like a reflex Wow, amazing, and he's like a pro Anyway, he doesn't even go speaking of which, that's great Right, part two, we've got questions from our listeners, actually in a part one, so do you want us in a bit? Oh, he went for the same thing, that's fine, he knows a good thing when it happens Okay, questions from our listeners, they're a positive nature this week, which is good The first question comes from Christopher Jiele Hi, Christopher, Christopher, he says, "Well, you sure we had a long conversation last week about how to pronounce it?" Well, it's interesting because Christopher has got an addition to a tweet where he explains his name, but I'll tweet out first He says, actually to know what, I won't. He says, given the family's Lancastrian heritage, we've always pronounced the surname, jillit, jillit, jillit, j-i-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l- Gillit, Gillit, J-I-L-L-I-T-Gillit, I think Gillit sounds better person. Anyway, Gillit the best American get doesn't sound, it's not quite the same. Well it's my wife Gillian, but with a G, so like Gillian, Gillian. Gillian. He says never 80's having a metal band. I just snuck this. Okay anyway, Christopher's question says, is that a corner turned? Or is it a corner turned question mark? Is it too much to hope for three points again as I've written on Wednesday? Is it a corner turned? We've been saying this week after week, haven't we, when Palace got slightly good results? If only I had some sort of phrase to represent when something has underperformed them and there's a corresponding overperformance. Could you just read one to that bit where you said we've been saying that week after week when we've got a good result? Yeah, we've only had good three points. No, we have, the point against Swansea, we said that, West Ham, I wasn't here for West Ham, but we have been, yeah, Sunderland's up. And you tell me we've had a point essentially. That was always a small reprieve though, wasn't it? Like it felt genuine relief from the players after that. It wasn't quite a turn, it was more of a lean. Yeah, it was, yeah. Well a corner turned towards what is it because it's, our goal now is not to go down, so it's not a corner turned towards anything other than salvaging a pretty poor second half of the season. But it could be, if we end up 12 or 13th or 14th depending on what you're going to do and they get f*ck up final, if it won't be seen, is that bad, really? The Everton thing is interesting because they're a waveform is much better than their homeform, but they lost to Manu, and they also have one of the most overrated managers there's been in the Premier League for the last five years. But they're also about, this is going to be the third away game on the trot, which you think must start to get them a little bit tired, and also I think they must be aware of the fact that ludicrously we could go above them if we would. Having said that, as we talked about, Norwich is a waveform previously, our homeform is still a pretty abject, but it's slightly odd having a game, the only game of the night. And I just, you kind of think, well you never can tell I promise, but you do generally hope that surely after Saturday they will be going to that more boy, also Everton will come, they will give us more space to play because they can't stop themselves, and that's interesting what Andrew says about Martinez because he's the sort of manager that the fans of every other club that he doesn't manage really likes, you really like watching. That was the fans I've really frustrated with, totally turned to get it. I mean that's really unlikely because they're good fans for them to publicly display that banner on these ones. Maybe he's not even overrated anymore, maybe it's just accepted, he's not that good. I think he's good at certain things. Good at cut runs, you know, and he's good at getting his team to retain possession, but he's not very good at getting them organised at all. So there's a world of difference between themselves. Yeah, very well. There's a world of difference, he's just been over it remotely because there's a world of difference between managing a team like Wigan, who are patronised with his face when they're in a Premier League, and anything they do was a bonus. Even then he's certain talent. I know, that's what I mean, but you kind of, the thing is he gets away with that because you go, well it's amazing that they kept, they stayed there in the first place. So you kind of go, well of course they went down because it's weird, but I thought Everton were very brave and take them on. The fact is he only seems to know one way to play football, that's sort of expansively. Yeah, the players, let's face it, the players, every single player he's got in his first eleven would... Oh, fantastic team. But they can't stop themselves, they just bomb on, they just keep attacking them and that will hopefully play into their hands a little bit. They're not going to come and do what Norwich didn't and pack the defence and wait to see what happens. Yeah, it does take a special type of managerial ineptitude to take bare materials as good as stones and barkley and make them look like pallets playing. And Lukaku, well the stones bark, Lukaku, bones, Coleman, Coleman. They're all good players. And they should just probably be easily within the top seven teams in the Premier League. They shouldn't be two points ahead of us. Okay, we will preview that and the Arsenal game. Just don't have done that, okay, we'll just do Arsenal in part. Just get the bus now. But there did seem to be... No, it's special, no, it's a discussion. So when it goes out, it'll be... No, we're not doing this week. No, we're not doing this week. No, we're not doing this this week. No, because of midweek games and ruining everything. Anyway, one of you there a few minutes ago, I don't know who touched on the fact that, I think it was Andy, that actually after this game there was a visible emotional kind of lift from the players. I don't think we've had in 2016 after the draws. It did feel a bit more like this is... But it was a bit lifted, because it was a victory. And that leads me into my next question, which is from Al. Hi, Al. He says, uh, following... Hey, how is this? It's not... I'm not sure what you can call me, Al if you want. You, you, you. I looked into your eyes and I knew which one was coming. I knew that you knew what I was going to do. That's why I did it. I'm proud of you for doing that one, it's good. You don't even know what we did, do you? Yes, Paul Simon. That's my favourite song ever. Really? Yeah. What's a good song? He needs to get out, mate. He needs to get out. He needs to get out. You need to get out. Well, a job or something. He's a good song. Al's question. I, I don't, I haven't got a job. Al's question is, this is my job. Um, Al's question is, uh, I'm not paid enough. Al's question is, following punch, getting totesimos, his, his words, not mine. What? Have you guys ever blubbed at a palace goal? I was inconsolable after hopping the, after hopping the song. What? After hopping the car one night, seven. I've seen J.D. craft your palace goal. I cried at Wembley playoff funnel. I've seen J.D. craft your palace goal. What? What for? Oh, at the end, when Jamie was on the pitch. Yeah, final, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. That wasn't, I mean, it was final, yeah. I think I cried after Mark Hughes equalised in the 1990 FA Cup final, but I wasn't at palace goal. I was, I was very emotional when Shelton really gave this in. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Did you say palace goal? Yeah. No, no, no. I'll just tell you the last, well, I cried. I cried on the way home from the Leicester playoff final. Again, palace goal. So. Yeah. Well, you don't, it's something, I mean, that's the thing. You don't tend to. I would say the playoff final was the only time I can remember crying. I think... Do you remember where he's at? Oh, the final whistle at Hillsborough. Final whistle. But what's the goal? Again, it wasn't a goal, but it was a... Good question. Yeah, no, I cried at the final whistle. So, yeah, but it's a good question. Yeah. Okay. Well, let's not listen. If you've cried after any palace goals. Or I'll give it off to the pod. Or off to this pod. Or you're a kid. Or enduring it. In 2013. I know, I'm crying right now. Great. It's called I've Ever Seen It So Hurst. Okay. That is clearly wrong. But next question is from... Oh, it was the goal. It was the goal. Yeah. Yeah. It's not the best goal I've seen it for the first, but it was good. It was subjective, though, isn't it? Yeah. Well, it's also... Well, that's clearly wrong. The Joe Pods. Oh. Joe Pods Seattle-ly. I judge you. Another question related to Pods. Joe. Pungion. Says, "Where does Pungion celebration stand in the all-time palace player celebration rankings?" If that's the thing. I don't know. It was a crime, didn't you? It got... It was... It was definitely one of the best palace player celebrations. There's been a lot of people on the world wide way. Yeah. What were they doing? Why is... Why is Kibai just standing in the background with the ball? Did he like how... There's going to be some sort of Raphael-style montage photo here. I'm going to go and grab the ball to stand in the background. What's he doing there? I'd like to think it was a pre-planned tribute to Dutch classicist painting. Well, I've got a feeling the accident. I just got a feeling of just... I've got a feeling they're all going... They sort of managed to start a new day one and thought we need to upstate this. They all said that we looked at it and said, "What's going on?" It was a great photo. It was just a looking accident, wasn't it? It was. But it was a very good one. But also Punch's face, like, he was so emotional, wasn't it? Yeah. It clearly meant a lot to him. And you don't see that very often. You don't? No, you don't. Good. It was a marvellous marvellous... I'm trying to think of other palette celebration. I think... Bright is after the equaliser. Villa Park was quite... Not a pallet player, but one of the funnier ones I've seen was, obviously, Tomeri Kitt's buyer. Kicking that... He didn't know all he'd get his... He'd get his first duck in the game. I think he got his first duck in the game. Well, also, the Chef of Wednesday player broke his foot. He did. Yeah. Well, that celebration might have saved our club. Yeah, it might have. Leon Clark. And it had enough percent off. You don't know, it's what would have happened. We all kind of... Not so far since... Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think we all know the worst one. That's got to be Chef Cuche's... Oh, with the worst palace celebration ever, isn't it? It wasn't great. It wasn't great. It wasn't great. Also, Trevor Francis celebrating the goal of punching the reserved L.K. in the first half. It was quite good. I don't think he was celebrating a goal. He was... I was concealing. No, no, because Kalinka... Kalinka was... Laughing. Laughing. We'd never seen... Yeah. Oh, God. Okay. Well, someone mentioned Kebai just then, and we've got a question from... Tweeting Nav. And Nav. And he says, "Is Kebai a misunderstood player? Regularly has the highest running, inception, creativity stats that you mentioned earlier. The fans seem to want more." I think not recently his stats. At the end of the season, it would be interesting to see what happens with Kebai next season, because I think he has disappointments too strong a word, but he's proved not to be what we thought we were getting, and there were moments earlier on, like the West Brom game, for example, when he did totally control it, and everything went through him, and he moved the ball really quickly, and he passed the ball really quickly, and it was created, but we've seen relatively little of that. And it's quite frustrating that his stats were talking about interceptions and tackles, rather than passes. And I thought the Southampton game, what he scored, was a real turning point, as I thought that first half was as good as we played all season, apart from the West Brom game, and he got forward more in that game than he, in fact, Paji spoke about it afterwards, how much he got forward, and it wasn't long after that that, the last he got it. But I don't... I think in years to come, he will go down. He's certainly not going to be a Lombardo, he's going to be... No. A frustrating... I think he may be sort of controversially, he may even be seen as, you know, one of these mercenary Premier League players. I hope not, and maybe I'm being beat too strong, but there's, you know, this... He came to us because he wanted regular first team football, Premier League, to get in the French squad. Maybe, you know, maybe somebody's told him he's not going to get in the French squad. Yeah, maybe he's going to be... This is what I think he's being told. I mean, the last French game he was on the bench. He's not a definite starter. And I just think, I think he's pretty much being told, you know, you're probably not going to get in the squad for the Euros. And therefore, he's just thinking, "What's the point?" I think he came... You know, maybe I'm wrong. Because we had a lot of expectations that we might be, and they might... But they might have been quite wrong possibly. He was good at the beginning of the season, he was great. He was always the way he played, so we were expecting a different player. He was good, but in a role... I certainly didn't think he was going to play that deep. No, that's true. I really didn't think he was going to play that deep for us. Well, maybe he's going to be in that for one of a terrible, better word, that sort of quarterback role where he would sit in front of the back four, but still... Yeah. And then you kind of thought... You can soldier yourself with the fact that he was tackling and intercepting, but... And I think he was, in a way, what he'll put to be more important in that we bought a really top quality player for the first time in a long time. But I don't think... I think Mercer is a bit harsh. I don't know. I think he brought into... I think he was persuaded to come to Palace. And I think he came for the right reasons. And it was interesting that, you know, we went public on the fact that he was being paid more than anybody else and part of you were just laughing about the fact where he's a better player and maybe... I don't think he's the most. I think he may be seen as a player. Yes, yes, yes. I don't want... No, I think he's done enough. It's not like... It's not like added by all when you kind of... Who is the most? ...with hindsight. I don't believe that. You're right. There's no two ways around. And I don't think there's an issue with that legally, but... No, no. ...with hindsight. I don't know anyway. But with hindsight, it's true. Yes, true. But with hindsight, it's going to be one of the most... Justifiable moves we've ever... Yeah. It's going to be... We've goodbye. You can't say, "Well, it's an accident waiting to happen." It was like, "We're all really excited about it." Albeit, Albeit. There is the caveat that we did all say at the time, not just us other Palace fans, that it was an area, a position that we weren't short of. And it was... We all thought it was an element of parish buying a player saying, "Well, I wouldn't much repregress to the big marquee name." But he's not lacking commitment. No. He's certainly... And there'd been moments of real quality. But again, if you take away the other creative players, when goodbye is fit, if you take away Punch and... In front of him, Balassie, in front of him, McArthur next to him, it's going to be much harder for him, of course. He can't make Sacco a better player. You can... No, I'm sorry. You know... All the great players through history have always been surrounded by other great players. Yeah, and he also does the basic... He does, yeah. And also, I remember what Scott Dan said that he signed a contract with Palace, because goodbye he could win. And I'd like to see goodbye stay, because I think it would help attract other players. And he's the level of player, as Andy said earlier, he's the level of player we've got to look for all over the pitch if we want to avoid what's happened in the second part of the season and move on. And the fact is that we... Palace fans will have to get used to the fact that the team is going to change completely every two years. And it's great that we've seen people like Delaney stay in three or four years. Of course it is, and it's great that we've seen players and Balassie and Zaha. It's really good, and you want to keep those players. But the fact is, other teams don't do that. Other teams will almost completely change the personnel every two years, apart from one or two wars at Stoke. The occasional player like that. But otherwise you just have to get used to the fact that we can't be sentimental in the future about players that come in, because there's no sentimentality in the body gap. Not if you want to stay in the Premier League, or not if you want to progress, it's simple as that. And the fact is, Bournemouth will find that out next season as well, because Bournemouth will have a remarkably good season. It has to have what for the brilliant stories, but they can't keep doing that with the squad they've got, because essentially they're over-rechieving championship squads, which in their way you could possibly argue that we are as well. And we simply have to get used to the idea that we've wave goodbye to players that we love. You're just a strange member for the week. In some ways, obviously far lower level of a team. In some ways it almost reminds me of when Veron designed for Manchester United. He goes into a team that's already performing at a certain level. He's an established star on the international and European stage. Comes in for a decent fee. Technically has made a very good impact, but because the expectation was sort of out there, and obviously that's working really well on radio and me putting my arm out there, because the expectation was so high amongst Palace fans, and there was this conception of what we were getting, because we'd seen some of the highlights from the past. The fact that he's still coming and been very technically accomplished, then still demonstrates all that sort of defensive side to his game. Because it's not been quite as eye-catching as Cabaya 24 was, and what 30-year-old football was going to be as eye-catching as they were at 24. Because of that, I think, not you, JD. Because of that, it's, I think, disappointed some fans. But maybe that's just down to a floor in their own expectations rather than the flooring out of the players. I think it's disappointing because we've had a disappointing run, and he's maybe easy to, and he's dipping forward, and he's coincided with the team's dipping forward, and he's easy to point the finger. But I also think as well, just going back to what Kevin was saying about the squad's changing, and he's going to be here next season or not. And here we are with seven to eight games to go, you know. There's no reason why, maybe I'm talking madness here, but there's no reason why we can't win seven of those games. It happens last year, there's no reason why we can't. And if we really want to go back to an earlier question, we really want to turn a corner, we'll give five days to the reason. If we want to turn a corner, going back to one of the other questions, then, of course, you know, it's up to players like Cabaya to help us do that. If he wants to get the French one, then prove it. Yeah, the problem is, I almost, no, I don't almost wish it. Of course, I want us to win every single game we play for the rest of the season, but that would really be putting a stick in plaster on it. Of course, because if we do end up winning three or four games and ending up in a big table, I think it would be a bad thing, because it would maybe convince us that we're a better team than we are. Surely, this run has shone a light on the fact that we know there are things to work on. Yes, I know, you'd hope so. You never know. But keeping Cabaya... Football fans have got a short memory. Yeah, but keeping Cabaya is as important. Sorry, did I just say something? I knew he was going to do that. I knew he was going to do that. You've been away for a couple of reasons. I know, I'm really buzzing today. I'm coughing on coffee. We said that keeping Cabaya, I think, is as important as hanging in other players without a doubt. What you'd like to see is how Cabaya is in a team that's got more Cabaya. Exactly. Okay, next question is on Dave Cook. Hi, Dave. Hi, Dave. He says, "After the love for Eddie Azard on Saturday, he was back at Celeste in the lap of honour, "Who is your favourite celeb fan?" And he's added, "Don't include yourselves. I mean proper celebs." That's very nice. Eddie Azard. Do you know what, it's somebody... I think as Mark Steely made the point that that's how football has changed in that a man in a dress, a lipstick. And heels did a lap of honour and got a standing ovation from all around the ground. And despite the fact, he's just done 27 marathons, which he didn't have to do. He kept saying to him, "It's only you that said you were going to do it." Nobody would mind if you didn't do it. Just as nobody would have minded if he turned up on Saturday wearing jeans. But the fact is, it's just a remarkable indication of our attitudes have changed. And of course he's one of our own, of course he's everyone knows that. But still, the fact that a man in drag gets a standing ovation. It's just the most uplift, it's just really uplifting. And the fact that he loves Palace, it means he's one of my favourite football quotes, which they've got at talk sport when you go in when he just said, "All I ever want for football is a quick palace with every single game from now until the end of time." And he's a proper fan, but it's just, and it's not because we lost what he called it. It was a big Palace fan, that was his English team, our hearts were his Scottish team. But obviously, if going back in Roger de Korsy, that James and I remember who was, because in the old days, you didn't need to know who people supported. Eric Morgan supported Loon, and that was it. But Roger de Korsy was one of the world's worst ventriloquist puppets. It was a nooky bear, nooky bear, but nooky bear. Look at him on YouTube, young folk, but he wore this giant palace rosette. Oh yeah, no, I've seen that. Some of which covered his... Yeah. Anyway, it was a giant palace rosette, so it was kind of... I've got very fond memories of him, because you simply, in those days, you didn't, nobody said who they supported. My answer to that question is that we're all celebrities, because we all support Crystal Palace. Oh, that's nice. Oh, that's nice. Oh. Oh, that's much it. No, yeah, no, I know. But some of our more celebrities than others. Yeah. Two, two, Miss Corey George Orwell. Look it up, youngsters. George Orwell. So James and Andy, who are your favourite celebrities? Is it Palace? Well, I read the question, so I should probably know. Yeah, I'm Sir Mirren. Who's your favourite Sir Mirren? I only go for Maxi Gess. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's what I mean. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Andy's going to go for the one. Oh, who is Maxi Gess? He will be one of the old days, yeah. That's quietly different, Richard. Why? I would have to go with... Do you just do a fan of the Rolling Stones? That one from status quo or something. Because we've run out of ones now. You said... I'm not allowed to say Eddie is old. Who's the one from status quo? Who's the one from status quo? Erm... The one who lives in Berlin. Really perfect. I don't know. One of them is a panist fan. You really know that. It was a box. It was a box. I don't know. It was a box. There was a box. It was a box of days, yeah. There's a lot. There's a lot of panist fans out there. A lot of panist fans out there. Good. Okay. The next question is from Stuart Norris. Hi Stuart. And he says, "However the dust settles on this season, we've got a poetic intro. What are the important lessons that the club and the manager should take away and implement for next season?" Oh, that's a... Squad? Well, I mean, that's an essay question. I think we probably don't go so many games. We'll go out winning there. We could start trying to let goals in and score them at the end. Yeah. Get someone who's not gone. Concrete and issues in goal would be, you know? Oh. It's just over an hour. And he's done well. He's done well. He's done well. He's done very well. I'm in remission. That was a very... To be fair though, it was a very good save. Almost straight after we just scored. Yeah. It was. It was. We'll ignore the flap at the cross in the first half and then spill in the ball in the sort of 82nd minute. It's a good question. It would be really interesting. It won't happen. But it would be really interesting if at the play of the year or afterwards Alan Pard you talked us through the season, basically, and explained from his point, if you would have gone wrong. Because recruitment is the big issue. But then the top issue... I'm finding out someone who would be asking him questions. Well, I'm not allowed to ask him questions. Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris. And there's been a meeting at the highest level, Chris Chris. Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris, and Chris. Oh, good. This year after the last... It was like, because of your journey question. That was impossible. Yeah. And the alpha male stare out. But I... The thing is, the recruitment thing, since everyone says recruitment, but less defiance would have been going. You know, he's myros and concerts. They paid 400,000 quid for myros. And less, I mean, fewer... They didn't know they were getting really good players. And the fact is you... Newcastle bought, spent a lot on money in the window, bought some terrible players. Norwich spent a lot of money. So you don't... It's not always the simple answer. But the fact is, you know, the... Yeah, played better, get better players in this... Yeah. It's the answer. And I think we need some depth in the squad. I mean, I know we talked... We talked about it every part, but that's what we definitely... I also think one thing that needs to happen... And I'm slightly sad it didn't this year's. I think it would have been the past is that... The club needed to acknowledge during this bad run that we were on a bad run. Because the only people that weren't talking about it were the owners and the manager, basically. And at some stage, I think somebody should have said, "Yeah, we are..." Because it felt... It felt for a long time, like... We were just drifting fairly aimlessly. And it certainly during the transfer window, it felt like the club assumed we had enough points and that we were fine. And I think it would have been nice if they had addressed our concerns at some stage because... The part you did start talking about it was literally about two weeks ago. It was right at the end of the run. That was too late, really, and it's like... Even if he said, "I don't know why this is happening." Even if he said, "I'm trying everything." Even if he said, "We've got a new coach driver." Or, "We've got, we're eating different pasta." It would have been nice to acknowledge the fact because probably fans were. We still are, to an extent, less so, obviously, but we were worried a couple of weeks ago. And despite the fact that we kept sandwich, it's alright because we're not playing bad football and it's still committed. The results kept going against us and we were... Public fans were fully aware that we... Not a laugh, it's not. But people were enjoying our discomfort because we're not always popular with other fans. And people were enjoying the fact that we were the least successful team in the Premier League. And the fact that Paji was suddenly not going to be England manager anymore. And it would have been just nice if they'd said... Not an apology, but a public acknowledgement said, "Look, we're really sorry about this. We just don't know what's happening. The players are trying everything they can." I think that fits into a wide point, almost. And it sounds a little bit jogging and a bit of business-y to say about managing expectations. But when you're doing stuff like, you know, in sort of late last year talking about European football, and not necessarily, as Kevin says, acknowledging this run until it was sort of, you know, one game from ending. And when you're not bringing up issues like the whole FFP complicing until the last day of the transfer window, there were a series of messages there that the club probably could have controlled a bit better, and that I think probably would have resulted in slightly less adverse reaction from fans. They thought a little bit more proactively. So it's just shown the club's naivety. I mean, we are still a relatively new Premier League club. We've read a few new owners. And it's a learning process. And the amount of scrutiny, we all know that the players get it on a weekly basis, and they looked at microscopically through the newspapers and the TV and the media. And I guess the club thought neither that they wouldn't be as a club in general. And because we're such a great family-type club and, you know, very encompassing of the community and all that, and everybody knows we are in the football world, that actually, maybe not that they were blousey about it, but just don't realise that. Actually, you know, we need to be told as well sometimes. We need to be told. Certainly things like you were away, but certainly things like the tech staff, the Leicester Games. Yeah. We had a really good day. Really? Yeah, which was just a PR. It's a bit bizarre. It's not a goal. I sort of take it except it's not. I disagree with you a little bit, because when I didn't mind it when Parrish and Pargy were talking about Europe around the Christmas time, I didn't mind them saying, "Let's look." Because Parrish said, "Let's look up. Let's aim for the hype." I didn't mind that so much. What I didn't like was after already on Saturday evening, Pargy saying, "Well, we're closer to mid-table than we are to the bottom three." So let's look at mid-table. It's like, "No, again, just acknowledge." "Just acknowledge the fact that we've been in trial." Yeah, just say this is a great result. It's fantastic. It takes the pressure off at the bottom. Don't start pulling the wool over eyes by going... And say that when we're going into the last home game, or we're going to Southampton, then we have one four out of five, and we are looking to finish tenth. That's fine. But don't immediately go, "Well, there you go. We're looking up. We're expecting them before." Because we're not idiots. There's nothing wrong with the wrong thing. They seem to have not been able to, because it doesn't fit the narrative of what has happened in the past. 'Cause it may be also not fit. There's not fit. There's not fit. There's totally me paying devil's advocate. It fit the narrative of the image that we're portraying to our new American market in terms of this underdog fighting and stuff. And what's that? You probably mentioned this in the pod. Was there that article in the Evening Standard recently that it was an interview with Parrish where he was saying... Hell, I'm so sorry for the... I'm really sorry for the... I guess you talked about it in the last pod. Things like that were a PR blunder in my eyes. I mean, absolutely shocking. I was appalled by that. Although that interview did make the point as well, which kind of got lost underneath all of the headline about talking about the American investors. Steve Parrish saying, "We did overperform for the first part of the season. We are now underperforming more so than we should do." And great as it was early in the season to hear Parrish talking about, you know, the possibility of Europe and all that sort of stuff. And I packed my beach towel and got my easy jet flights ready. But as great as it was to hear that, you do sometimes need to temper some of that stuff just because stuff can't go wrong. Which is why now, when we talk about being closer to mid-table, we could quite easily go on that sixth game running straight up. But we might end up losing six games in a row as well, and still finishing just a couple of points above relegation. And you can't over-inflate some of those expectations. Because on that, you end up being Charlton. But at the same time, we've thought about that. We've always got the applause down the line. Of course. It's part of the problem that we've talked about for Steve Parrish for a long time, in that it's a difficult balancing act for him, and he wants to move the club on. And of course, he wants to get the investment, and he wants the selfie station fans, and he wants the American fans. And every club needs that revenue stream for one of the better. But at the same time, you can't get that at the expense of us, at the expense of the fans. But there is a balancing act, and I think sometimes the club recently feared too much on the side of the glamour. But it is a learning curve, isn't it? I think it's a learning curve. I actually think it's a learning curve. And I don't want to come across a negative about the owners and parishes. I'm not. I'm just saying, we all learn. We have to look around at all the other clubs. And the fact is they've bought so much goodwill. They've got years in the credit column, yeah. Because the fact is they do admit sometimes when they've made mistakes. And they are still finding things out. They have to run as good owners. But you only have to look at some of the other clubs, who have got the sort of people that are running them. And also we still operate within our economic and financial means. Because the one thing that parishes always talk about is that everything is judged against not going out of business. That's the most important thing. And everyone makes mistakes, even the experienced people. We've done 176 podcasts. and 70s podcasts still sometimes. - I think sometimes as well they do get, I think the owners still get sometimes reduced by the glamour of the Premier League sometimes. - We all do, we all do, we all do. - Is that remembering the fact that most of our fans are from Croydon or South East London? - Yes, we have to keep our feet on the ground but it's nice to try and fly sometimes isn't it? - Yes it is but also the fact is the fly and everything I've been. - Yeah the fans, everyone talks about no one's talking about Palace fans this year. - The last two years everyone's been talking about how we're the best fans of the year. In fact, it's because the expectations have changed a little bit and it's because we haven't had our backs to the wall and we haven't had the greatest game and again you have to be reconnect with the Palace fans and part of that, that's why I think the punching thing was so important. - Exactly. - Because that was old Palace and you've seen it, I must have watched the reaction, I'll keep rewinding it on actually the day, just watching the fans reaction to that and just as much as Punctions because I haven't seen that level of fan reaction. I think since the John Terryungold Chelsea, it's the first time this season when it's felt like the old Palace, everyone's been. - It's funny you say that, there was a shot of him after the goal with the sort of back job of all the fans on their own style and I was sort of going through, I think it must be Facebook or Twitter and my first reaction was actually I thought it was an old photo. It was a photo from 2013-14 and I looked really close to it and said, "Oh no that's the issue, it's good." of course that makes more sense it was the other day but it was the first time that I suppose as fans we've stopped resting on the laurels, I think, given that sort of reaction. - Because our fans forget this is the wall, that's the wall, that's the wall, that's the wall. - Yeah, exactly, yeah. - And maybe that's where we throw it. - We always have to as a club, we've always thrived when it's, we've there, the rink. - When we beat Newcastle 5-1, when we beat Southampton it was kind of like, "Yeah, yeah, we deserve this, is what we are," but that's definitely the first time this season it's felt like... - Palace? - Yeah, it felt like they... - Weirdly. - It felt like you had the connects between us and the players and... - So that makes the question what we have to be happy about being a mid-table club and always being mid-table? Probably, I don't know. - I don't know. - I've opened up the door there. - But every club talks about asking the fans... - Well, there was more, but out of the top four for 20 years. - But there are more of themselves with fans that weren't at high-breeds, I know a lot of asked the fans, "We can't abide the fans that have only started coming since they were at the Emirates because they expect a certain degree of success." - Unfortunately, that's a corollary of us getting better at corollary. It's a buy product of us wanting to establish ourselves in the Premier League, but we have to sort of do... And I think it's a make-meissive season ticket. It's a day and a couple of seasons when they got blasé and they got... And they had to sort of re-establish it really, and the huge has done really well at that getting the fans black on stage, and even though Stokely got better players and having a good season, huge is brilliant at sort of presenting themselves as the underdog against the big teams. And we really have to do that. - We have to do that. - Yeah. - You know, because every other club gets fed up with us. We are special fans. We are brilliant fans, but it's certainly a way from home. But when you read, you know, the Observer had a thing every year when they asked other fans who were the best players, and the past two seasons, 18 out of 20 go pallets, and this year I don't think they will do that. - Well, hopefully we will change that. - Because the imposing fans come to sell us, the first one of these shouties, where's your famous atmosphere? - Yeah. - If we were singing or not. - Yeah. - Because it's the expectation. - Yeah. - Well, the expectation for us is to end... - Oh! - Oh! - Oh! - Oh! - And go in. - Two slick. - Two slick. - Oh! - Three. - Excellent. - That'll do. - Where are we going to be? - We're going to be previewing pallets. It's the next two games, in fact, before the next podcast is ever turned on Arsenal. So, it joins us in a bit. - Yes, welcome back to this week's Five Year Plan podcast! - Oh! - Two! - Uh, pod 176 sponsored by Vector Printing for all your printing embroidery needs. Go to vector.co.uk, and then stay to weather. - K! - K!C.I.S. to the global research and brand, consultancy from South London, visit jc-is.com. - I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will. - Oh, nice. - No, no extra, this week, because of the fixture pileup, we've got two games to preview. - Two games in a week. - Two games in a week. - No time travel to a previous year, even though. - No time. Oh yeah, of course, no time travel. - No time travel. - No time travel travel. - No time travel travel. - Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. - Rightness about that. - Two levels. - Students. - Yeah. - Just like the old days, previewing policy's next game, and in fact, there's two games this week. We got Everton at home, which we did touch on earlier, and then Arsenal away. Two fairly tricky games, what are we expecting, Kevin, in terms of turnaround from Palace? - No, it's impossible to answer that question these days. - Okay, good, well, good night. - Pretty short part. - But it is, we've tried so hard for, you know, since January to what we expected and we talked, you know, it's sort of fairly faux intellectual way, but what we're expecting. And I just generally don't know, I'd like to think that off the back of that three points that the weight will be lifted, and we'll come out and batter Everton for the start, but that's, I can't let it, it could be equally with it, we'll be four-nil down in the first 10 minutes, I generally don't know. - If we get, if we do manage to get a win, or yeah, three or four points this week, is that us? Games, is that us? Safe? Do you think that's us? - Yeah, we are. And mathematically, obviously we're not safe, but let's be honest. - If we, if we've been... - I can't see those north-eastern clubs. - If we, if we'd be Everton, Newcastle have to win with the gold difference, they basically have to win every, or win five and draw one. - Some people have to lose all our guess. - Yeah, and, and Aladice has already admitted that it's, they're not looking at us anymore, it's something Norwich they can catch, and it's, you know, everyone's talking about Leicester's lead being on and saying, well, it's, it's almost impossible to imagine, because basically what happens is two of the bottom, and even if some of them beat Norwich, then, yeah, it's a good result. - I've got a number. - Well, yeah. - It's between 0.02% and 0.1% likely that we'll go down. - Yeah. - And we're based on the various projections. - I've got footballs all about stats. - It is, indeed. And I think that's where we've gone from 250 to 150 to 1, to go down to 500 to 1. - Right. - To go down. So, but I get, I'm not going to say it out loud, because of all the stick I'm getting for the last three months blaming me for what's going on. Which I think is great considering how blobs I have been for. I know, I know. I've never done, as we said before, ever since this is a third away game. The whole late in Baines thing that he's had to apologise for is not saying that much, just for saying, but for basically saying to fans for doing what we've asked Palace to do, and acknowledge that there is a problem. If one of our players came out and said that, "Do you think our fans would react in the same way?" I'd be glad to be pleased. I'd be delighted if one of our fans said that I'm sorry about this, but look at our squad. It's not quite coming off, but it's not for the want of trying. And the fact that Everton have censured him for it and made him apologise. I think it was entirely the wrong way to deal with it. But again, Everton have just got their new investor that's bought a huge amount of the club, so maybe that's part of that. But I think late in Baines, and you saw the fans' reaction on Saturday, and have massively underachieved, they've probably all talked about that the fact that the FA Cup is a big opportunity for them and it hasn't occurred to them that they're drifting for the rest of the season. So they are on paper lines with the opponents, but we've said that eight or nine times a season. They said that was probably a way game. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I can't see being free. I actually think that the fact is that our home form is pretty poor, but I think, and it looks like, if we go into the semi-final, absolutely safe. Yeah. That would be brilliant. Yeah. And the fact is, I think we can get a point. I think a point would do it, and I think it would be nice to... I can almost see the headlines now, you know, four months without a win, and then we get two in... Yeah. So we said previously on the poor that that might kickstart the results. Yeah, but Everton are a good side. They've only lost twice away from home. They've gotten really good, really. Yeah. I think there's the Watford result was poor. And I think the fact that, as I said, they've, because they've had three away games in ten games, that's got to... Oh, yeah. Ten days. That's got to... I think there's similarities between Palace and Everton this season, in the two teams that are underperforming for the quality they've got, two teams that are left in the FA Cup, semi-final, two teams that have just had investment, two teams with young-ish managers. There's quite a lot of youth. Two teams that were blue. Three teams are not blue. There is, but there's quite a lot of similarities, I think. But there are. But the difference is that if we stay up, we'll be highly delighted. And the fact is that Everton shouldn't be looking to stay up. Everton won the title in living memory. And one... Everton fans are angry. They are. And right, it's never ever to know. Everton are a big good club. Well, they've got a £50 million striker. They've got two regular, or potentially regular, in the very near future England internationals through the spine of their team. And yet they're performing at a low level. We've got Baccari Sacco on the wing. We've got like one bad injury. They are massively under-boy. Well, three, because they've got Bain, Stones and Bartley. Yeah, three. She was plus De La Feu, plus Lukaku. Yeah, McCarthy. Yeah, with the X, the Tottenham player, up front, his name I always forget. Yeah, him. Him. Him. So they are... Lennon. Oh, yeah, Lennon. Yeah, they've got a better place than we are. And they should be doing really well, but you can't put your finger on... Why they aren't. But the faster... Yeah, and at the end of the season, as I say, for us, staying in the Premier League is a result, but not for them. Yeah. But, you know, it's been a while... It's been a while since they have been sort of knocking at the door. You know, there's one of those clubs that have not quite... I don't think it's entirely the manager's fault because there's been... I mean, it's always... It's always been a good job ever, but it's still sort of up a mid-table team, rather than... Well, there's a slightly poisonous atmosphere there in there as well. Like, they were bringing out banners saying Martin is out, I think, on... ...at the weekend, and it's, you know, pretty rare for a team of Everton's ilk, who you sort of associate with, haven't fed. Well, it's got a normal good fan. They are. They've got... You know, they've got good fans ever. They're looking like those idiots from Finnsby Park, who'd bring out a banner over just about anything. You're talking about, you know, a solid set of fans. So, for them to be kicking off in the manner that they are, you know, there's clearly an atmosphere there that... ...but perhaps Palace as the same I'll be able to explore. I find it really odd that they... ...the club publicly censured late in Baines. But didn't say a word when Lukaku spent three weeks saying I want to move... ...I want Champions League football next year. Yeah. And the fact is, if you offered him £2 million, he wouldn't want Champions. But they were quite happy for him to say that. And they jumped on later, Baines. It basically apologised into the fans. And all he said was, "The chemistry is not quite right." And he is. It's gone. They've conceded goals in Dance Games. There are two games that historically Palace don't do particularly well in. We haven't been Everton at home since 1994, and we haven't been Arsenal in any format that I can remember for... ...probably a similar time to you. No, he's just out of the nil with Everton when Keith Millen... ...was it Keith Millen's first game? Yeah. That was quite an interesting game. But my question to you guys is, and this goes back to part one. Would you start at Gail in these games? Not if we could fit. How far as would you have been for it, do we know? Well, he's not meant to go on stage today. They must be... Yeah. I don't think he would start. Yeah, if we could fit. But the rest of the team probably the same... ...or would you bring World Token? It would bring World Token. I think that's interesting when he's so hard as well, because I think it's hard... ...probably works better as an impact. But I'd rather it wasn't... ...Sacko that was taking his place, if you see what I mean. Yeah. Oh. I'd rather it was either it was taking his place. Yeah, but... You've got more movement than Sacko. Yeah. Jordan Lynch. Is he injured? I don't know. I don't think so. Thanks. I'd be starting Wickham against Arsenal just 'cause you never caught up. Are you going to get against Arsenal if they get... ...if they're sent about to get roughed off a bit? I think the manner in which we'll end up playing against Everton, because they always push their fallbacks up against Arsenal... ...because we always get joy down. The flank's had almost be tempted to start go 'cause he's got that tiny bit more pace and... ...you know, might end up making those runs into the box a bit more than Wickham will. Yeah. And probably better with his sort of head going towards goal. I'd maybe be starting him against Everton. But I think a lot will just depend on who he's fit to. I think the thing with Arsenal as well is that they simply... ...just never mind for England. We'll just go Long Wall against Arsenal because they're two centrebacks. They've announced them way to happen. They simply can't defend against crosses and against a big strong centreback, which Wickham is. It's like it's just... You can understand why Arsenal's friends are upset because they spend all that time working out their beautiful, pretty football... ...or in two-thirds of the picture and can't do the basic defending job. And Arsenal fans are going to be really cross on Sunday. It depends on the results on the Arsenal fan. It just makes me laugh 'cause Arsenal done the double over Leicester, scored seven goals against him. And there's still ten points behind him. Wow. I think every club in the Premier League goes, "How the fuck are we behind Leicester?" But Arsenal in particular. And I think we should try and exploit it 'cause the atmosphere is going to be fairly poisonous, I think, on Sunday. And fans have been pretty good at the Emirates, of course. And if we get a positive result on Wednesday and we see what happens with Newcastle and Sunderland and Norwich on Saturday, again, with any luck, it'll be a game that we can go into and just try and spoil Arsenal. But Arsenal's still a really good... You know, what Arsenal's going to turn on. And that's all for all that we talked about. We talked about Zeddonack earlier on, playing well against Norwich. Zeddonack against the Arsenal team that's fully functioning with all that mobility in and around him. It could be an extra point to happen, basically. Quite worrying. Well, we'll see. But hopefully, by the time it happens, it won't matter that much. No. 'Cause I think when we've... Already doesn't, we're safe. Well, yeah. But I think we looked, when we were looking at the last ten games, the last nine games, the last eight games, I think we pretty much said, "Well, I'll forget Arsenal, we won't get anything there." But where was that old traffic? I think we probably can go and get it. Well, we'll be back next week to preview the old traffic game because we'll be back to... Okay. God willing, yeah. God willing. God willing. We'll be back after... God willing, yeah. God willing, yeah. Arsenal and Everton. Yeah. And then we'll be looking forward to May 19th and that's semi-final at Wembley. Oh, yeah, of course. But that'll be on next week's pod. That's the end of this week's pod list, and thank you very much for listening. Thanks. I hope you're still awake. Kevin, it's been a long one.
