an absolutely wonderful 24 year old red Bordeaux
welcome back to adventures of black belt sommelier I opened a bottle of wine last night that illustrates two of my theories for maximizing your enjoyment of fine wine it was a birthday gift 2000 vintage feast Lagrange so the second label of Chateau Lagrange which is a very good Chateau in San Julien this is their second label 2000 24 years old 2000 is a very great managing bordeaux so that has it has that go for it but the two theories that it illustrates are that the entry level wine from a really great winery can all often be a good strategy for buying affordable really excellent wine and the other theory is that there's a reason that we have wine sellers and there's a reason that we allow wine to mature because they become something much much more special with age in the bottle so this wine 24 years old when I first opened it it's very very bready and I thought that might be a problem in the wine because breath is pretend of my seas is can be in a nuance in the wine but if it's overwhelming it for me at least it's not terribly enjoyable that blew off I think we actually may have opened this wine on the exact perfect moment it was glorious it was a much finer wine than I expected it to be now it's a very great vintage it's a great Chateau it had been stored very well cork was intact there was almost no knowledge which is surprising in a 24 year old wine the bread blew off it was so silky and so rich and so complex and finished was so long this wine you know I don't think if you have any or you want to find some I don't think it's one that you need to be in a hurry to break but it's not I don't think this bottle would have been better I don't think it would have been as good today as it was last night and I don't think it would have been good as good the day before yesterday as it was last night it was absolutely as they say a plan it was absolutely absolutely not going to say it was a perfect wine but it was absolutely perfect moment for this wine in its life to open it and drink it it was just absolutely extraordinary example of mature red bordeaux from a great vintage you know they say the sensually and it's kind of the most archetypal bordeaux because it's kind of in the middle you know in between status stuff and and Poiac and Marco which is kind of in the middle portion of of the left bank and in the wines of the most typical bordeaux this wine is very much an expression of that so the point I'm making is that so in this wine I checked online you can find this wine for about $60 bottle that's that's a pretty great price for a wine of this quality with this age and if it's as good if the bottle you buy is as good as the bottle I tasted last night that's $60 very well spent and so again the entry level wine from a winery that produces great wine is often going to really deliver a lot of pleasure at an affordable price and then you know as I always say if if a wine is not capable of improving with time in the bottle it shouldn't sell for more than about twenty five dollars the reason we pay a hundred dollars or five hundred dollars or thousand dollars or five thousand dollars for a bottle wine is because of what's capable of becoming with time in the bottle in a cool wine cellar, cool dark wine cellar undisturbed and this bottle of wine beautifully illustrates what a bottle of wine from a great vintage from a good producer can become with time but it can become something really extraordinary because this wine was absolutely it was just a wonderful wonderful wine it way outperformed its pedigree kind of like if you entered a mutt in the Westminster dog show and it won that that's kind of what this wine was it it's a it's a mutt that wind the Westminster dog show special stuff indeed so not I'm not saying that you should beat the bushes for a bottle of two thousand two thousand feet to Lagrange but I'm saying that this is an illustration of what is possible with a wine cellar and wine you know thoughtfully purchased and cellard for an appropriate amount of time and opened when it is going to show its best it can't you know you can have an experience like I had last night with my friend that I shared this bottle of wine with thanks for tuning in to adventures of a bite vaults only a we appreciate your time and attention talk to you soon.
