Hello and welcome to The Weekly Escape. You're listening to 106.7, RibLE FM, and this week I am back. So, look, last week I left you some clues, but there were no conversation pieces from me last week because I was actually very busy on my own little escape, more on that in a second. But did anyone spot the link between the songs that I played last week? I did try to leave you a theme, albeit with no guidance. So, we had a bit of UB40, Adele, Amy Winehouse, any link between them. Well, in case it wasn't clear, the link was, well, it was wine, but then it kind of had to get a bit broader than that because music choices are hard to compare with the wine mentioned in the songs of the titles. So, Red Red Wine, Amy Winehouse, we had Adele, I Drink Wine, but then we also had to broaden the definition a little bit. I played a bit of Kylie, if you remember. Kylie has her own wine label, Wine Brand. Anyway, she has some wines. You should give it a try. Why not? So, yes, the link was wine and you might be thinking, what was the point of that? Well, the little weekly escape that I took myself on last week was a trip to Bordeaux, a lovely wine region in the south of France. I think I'd mentioned it on a previous escape when I was covering France in general as a country. I did mention I had a trip to Bordeaux, and that has now happened last weekend. So, I played some wine-themed songs all there about drinking themed songs whilst I was there. And now that I'm back, instead of giving you clues, I'm just going to tell you straight up this week. I'm going to talk about my weekend away in Bordeaux because I had an absolutely fantastic time with a couple of friends. We did samples, some delicious wines from the region, but we also did a lot more than that. So tonight's escape is going to be my weekend in Bordeaux and the surrounding areas, things that I did that I enjoyed and things that you might like to do too. So, as I say, Zara Lawson brought us in with all the time, and I'm now going to play you another excellent song. This is Counting Crows with Accidentally in Love. So, I said what's the problem, baby? What's the problem? I don't know them, maybe I'm in love, love. Think about it every time, think about it. Can't stop thinking about it. How much longer will it take to shoot this? Just take care of it 'cause I can't ignore it. If it's love, love makes me wanna turn around, it frees me, but I don't know nothing about love. Come on, come on, turn a little faster. Come on, come on, the world will follow after. Come on, come on, because everybody's after love. So, I said I'm a snowball running, running down into the spring that's coming all this love, melting under blue skies, belting out sunlight, shimmering love. Maybe I surrender to a strawberry ice cream, never ever end or roll this low, but I didn't need to do it 'cause there's no escape in your love. These lines of lightning mean we're never alone, never alone, no, no, come on, come on, move a little closer, come on, come on, I wanna hear you whisper, come on, come on, settle down inside my love, come on, come on, jump a little higher, come on, come on, if you feel a little lighter, come on, come on, move on, it's a part of time in love. We're accidentally in love. Accidentally in love. Accidentally in love. Accidentally in love. Accidentally in love. Accidentally I'm in love. Accidentally I'm in love. Accidentally I'm in love. Accidentally I'm in love. Accidentally I'm in love. Accidentally I'm in love. Accidentally I'm in love. You can call this another lonely day. You can go your own way. Don't go your own way. Tell me why. Everything to around. Backin' up, checkin' up so you won't do. If I could, baby I'd give you more. Open up, everything's waiting for you. You can go your own way. Don't go your way. You can call this another lonely day. You can go your own way. Don't go your own way. Don't go your own way. Don't go your own way. Don't go your own way. You can go your own way. Don't go your own way. You can call this another lonely day. You can go your own way. Don't go your own way. You can call this another lonely day. [Music] [Music] [Music] Fleetwood Mac with Go Your Own Way there. That was two songs for the price of one. Hope you enjoyed that. And now I am going to talk about Bordeaux and the trip that I took recently. So last week took an early morning fight on the Friday and landing into Bordeaux airport which by all intents and purposes as we walked through arrivals seemed very very small although on the way back it seemed a bit bigger. But anyway it was very easy arriving there straight through. Security wasn't too bad. We actually didn't take any suitcases so we didn't have to wait. One of the decisions the reasons behind that decision was well I guess the cost of a suitcase these days when you have to add everything onto your flight price it just becomes a bit ridiculous doesn't it. But then the other one was well we don't want to wait around we just want to get going make the most of the time but it seemed like that actually wouldn't have been an issue and at least on this one particular day in Bordeaux seemed like the cases came straight out there was just one carousel and it was really really quick so by the time we'd shown our passports the bags were there so maybe if you do like to pack a bit you know a bit more stuff don't let that put you off it would just be the price but that again depends on you fly with etc etc anyway it was really really easy to get into Bordeaux from the airport and there is a tram that goes directly into the city centre. I think the fair was one euro 80 it might have been a little bit more maybe two euro 10 but it was really really low and and it was maybe 15 or 16 stops to get right into the centre the heart of the city which was where we were planning to meet our other friends so that was super easy to do it was the line A and it takes you all the way in and there's various stops that would be handy no matter where you're heading to super easy to buy your ticket from the machine don't forget to validate your ticket when you get onto the tram and you have to like hold it against the the BP machine that's by the door and then you're ready to go so it was about 40 minutes and we got off right in the city centre and we'd already pre-planned a little bit of oh where should we meet let's get some lunch first off and we'd spotted this place from I think it was an Instagram blog type thing that someone had done about great places to eat in Bordeaux and this one called all right it was called Poulette and it's basically a chicken restaurant open all day they do like lunch and tea later on and they serve drinks as well so you can go for any kind of style of meal I suppose but it's all centered around chicken so it might be rotisserie chicken there was chicken salads I think they had a wrap as well all different forms but chicken is the main ingredient so if you're not a meat eater perhaps not Poulettes but otherwise can 10 out of 10 recommend it was amazing so there's a couple of Poulette restaurants in Bordeaux it's a little bit of a chain I guess I think there's two at least um we went to the one that was in a square I think it was called Plasfernand something something I'll find out anyway it was a beautiful sun trap of a square we sat outside the food was amazing we also shared a bottle of wine between the three of us because when in Rome I mean it was it was our holidays it was a Friday afternoon it was sunny you know it was like 23 degrees that Friday so we were sat out sunglasses on getting our tan on and myself and my friend got the chicken Caesar salad which was really really good it was like crispy fried chicken in the salad so so nice and then my other friend got the half chicken which came with potatoes and vegetables and this lovely sauce I think it was like a yogurt sauce and it had like green herbs in it as well like a herby oil so good I can't even describe how good it was but please look up Poulette and if you go to France check it out I mean I know they're in Bordeaux I'm hoping there else works I would love to go again on another on another holiday it was honestly that good and then the white wine I can recommend but as we all know Bordeaux is a red wine region um well I guess they do both um but yeah look wine is wine is wine I'm not a full-on connoisseur but I do appreciate a nice tasting one and I can say that one was good and it complemented the food very very well so that was how we started our little Bordeaux adventure after that we had a little wander to our Airbnb which was also great and and then a little mooch about the city so more on that very soon but first here's a song this is The Darkness with I believe in a thing called love just a few throwbacks today can't explain all the feelings that you're making me feel my thoughts in order driving your behind the steering wheel touching you touching me touching you can't touch on me I believe in a thing called love just a few throwbacks today because the trails be making down and it's just a few throw I believe in a thing called love I want to kiss you every minute every hour every day you call me in a spin but everything is here to come touching you touching me touching you can't touch on me I believe in a thing called love just a few throwbacks today I believe in a thing like it now I believe in a thing called love get to it [Music] touching me touching you touching me touching you can't touch on me I believe in a thing called love just a few throwbacks today I believe in a thing called love just a few throwbacks today I believe in a thing called love just a few throwbacks today [Music] okay so the square that I was on about was plus Bernand LaFarg I was so close and basically we were staying near there we had a good mooch all around that area it's very central and so it was pretty much the setting for all of my stories in bordeaux that we can't and also I'm getting confused about the red wine white wine thing bordeaux has all of them and we we drank local wines the whole time but more about red wine specifically later on so stay tuned 106.7 ripple FM here's a public service announcement on behalf of James our limited hello I'm James I want to let you know that if you've had an accident with your vehicle no matter music again um i hope you're enjoying the random songs that come out of my head and into my playlist today but they're all just kind of upbeat and fun just songs that i like um and i hope you're liking them too so bordeaux absolutely gorgeous city really pretty old town fabulous to walk around by day or by night and i would really encourage a mooch at all hours of the day and it's just a great place to walk around it's lovely and there's loads of little shops and things great places for food and lots of little jewelry stores as well if you're into kind of beauty key jewelry there's loads of different ones really really fantastic and loads of little squares as well which are great places to gather to have a little sit maybe a coffee maybe some kind of pastry dessert or a full-on meal we went out that friday night we found some tapas which was lovely a little spanish uh restaurant place and you can really have like a pan european or indeed like a fully global food experience whilst you're in bordeaux but we did do some specifically french things as well so that brings me to saturday morning we were on our way to the train station which is massive by the way and so do leave yourself plenty of time to find your platform because it could be another kilometers walk from when you get in the door anyway i digress on the way to the train station we went to the marshy digapusa which is this really great farmers market basically where you can buy loads of local produce loads of fresh baked goods as well and that was where we had breakfast saturday morning so we took time to go around every stall inside and there was a few outside as well if you want to sit out in the sun and and we just couldn't really decide what to eat because it all amazing they had loads of different cuisine loads of french stuff but also italian greek chinese even there was really everything and so we settled on buying a sample of puy d'amor which were these little pastry tarts i guess and i believe it's french for wells of love and it's like a hollow pastry tart case and then it's filled with some kind of jam and then cream on the top absolutely delicious i got a lemon one it was really really good and ten out of ten would have again for sure and and then for like a savory thing we actually all shared three of us this chinese crepe thing so i guess it was kind of like an a filled omelette but well it was a crepe so you watch the make it in front of you on there they're like hot plate all the different fillings we chose chicken so it's like a chicken like coriander it was so flavoursome it was delicious kind of tricky to eat though um we did just have to like go around taking bites and but absolutely gorgeous and such a bargain for like seven euro fifty we got so much food out of it and it was absolutely yum so we had a little pastry things as well we also bought cannelles which are uh board hoe like delicacy it's kind of this like baked cake small with a distinctive shape it's like a rigid edge um round and the flavours of like rum um really really nice delicious we ate those later actually on the train because we were quite full from the Chinese crepe and also we sampled some pretty strong coffee and um panache au collard although in the south or at least in board hoe they're the french actually call them chocolatines so it's the panache au collard that we know and love but by a different name and they were really really great from this one bit um bakery stall but there were plenty to choose from so absolutely recommend the marche de capo some and then we spent the day over in arca shan so i will tell you more about that after this next song this is mimi web with good without you nearly gave me a heart attack when you said you're doing well it's little busy all i hide and that's just been like hell guess i'm lonely thinking like you ain't moved on then i'm sorry if i'm coming off too strong never thought i'd see the shape of pain standing in the front porch light is it obvious i'm not okay never meant to start a fight guess i'm just a moment living in your past but i'm never thought you'd forget me so fast because i'm staring at all these photographs i guess the good things ain't meant to last i gave you forever you gave them on i'm never falling for anyone and now i'm looking at the city or the rain just what you're feeling now if that's what love's about that i'm so good without i'm so good without somebody new don't even pay for pity's sake you just do what you gotta do isn't normal for the pain to go from fear and all we've been thinking i wish you yeah because i'm staring at all these photographs i guess the good things ain't meant to last i gave you forever you gave them on me i'm never falling for anyone and now i'm looking at the city or the rain just what you're feeling now the stars what love's about that i'm so good without i'm so good without i'm so good without i'm so good without because i'm staring at all these photographs i guess the good things ain't meant to last i gave you forever you gave them on me i'm never falling for anyone and now i'm looking at the city or the rain just what you're feeling now it's the stars what love's about that i'm so good without so a day out in Akashan the train from Bordeaux to Akashan it probably took about an hour maybe just a little bit under um it was very pleasant french trains are pretty comfy to be honest and also double decker so if you get a thrill out of going upstairs on a train boys on the france the place for you and then once you get to Akashan it's a lovely like seaside town and you step straight out head down to the coast and there you are a lovely like sandy beach it was really really nice now considering it was october i mean i've said it was kind of unseasonably warm it was pretty warm but i mean it still wasn't for me jump in the sea weather so i didn't actually go swimming in the sea but the beach itself was really lovely for a nice walk a chill there were people laying out like not fully sunbathing but you can still go relax on a beach can't you even if it's not baking hot so can absolutely recommend and then if you had left i guess once you get to the coast walk along a bit you'll get to the pier from where you can take various boat trips so there's different tours you can take across the bay and or to different places around the bay and what we opted for was the boat across to Cap Ferre which i would really recommend if you like a nice day out and if you're a fan of seafood as well more on that in a quick second so we booked our boat ticket but it was in like an hours time because they have a little gap over lunchtime between sort of like 12 and 2 so we took the chance to go have a little wander about around a bit more of Akashan so it's not just the sea front and there was a really nice man actually who my friend speaks fluent French she asked him to take photo of us together at the beach and then he started chatting and he said oh you must go up to the ville de ver which is this really nice area of town and so that literally means like winter town i suppose and he said you must go up there and go and see these gorgeous like old old style houses and you know i'm really glad we did so we walked up the hill and it is quite a hill because all these like old and old style houses like old detached like on their own plot with their own kind of character painted different colors and some looked a little bit more abandoned than others and people do still absolutely live there but some of them were kind of run down given like haunted house vibes but most of them were were in really good nick like it was it was very much like they're the posh end of town so and where the wealthy would have historically lived and i'm sure still do and so these big like paneled houses and like i say painted all different colors with green ones like mint green there's some peachy orange there's one that was like called saranto and it had a little mosaic of the house like on the the pillar by the gate and it was really like beautifully painted and it perfectly matched the house itself and so i thought it was really pretty and very much a great way to spend like 45 minutes that we had spare just wandering around so that was lovely and then we headed back down towards the seafront through the kind of shop line streets and loads of nice cafes and restaurants there as well not that we actually sampled them but um you could very easily spend the day eating there i'm sure you could stay in august and spend a few days to be honest but we then went and got the boat across to capveray like i said and then when you arrive there there's restaurants immediately available with the super fresh seafood which is all caught in the bay and their specialty is oysters and like shrimp but we didn't want to go to the first one that we saw we wanted to kind of go to a smaller one down in one of the fishermen's villages so we rented bikes which was also like very cost effective i think it was maybe like ten euros for four hours which was really really good and i got a little basket on the back of mine you can also get helmets for free um so all safe all good and then we managed to find the cycle trail and we took a recommendation from the guy at the bike shop as to where we should head to eat so there's loads of um oyster shacks basically or i think they call them cabans and he recommended one down in this uh town or area called lyreb so that's where we cycled to and it probably took like 20 minutes maybe half an hour but it was really nice like through the trees on a dedicated cycle path so you don't have to cycle on the road which is always good um yeah and one of my friends is really big into shellfish and let me tell you if you are once you're in this area it's super cheap like not like what you would pay for oysters here or you know elsewhere in the world i think we got six oysters for eight euro um and then if you get 12 it was about a deal 18 about a deal so it just depends how many you want and how big your party is but we found this gorgeous caban which had a nice wooden decking out above the beach and above the sea and we sat there right on the edge beautiful views we got oysters we got some shrimp and we also got some patty and bread which was more kind of my speed but i did try an oyster so don't come for me and we also got some wine because again when in Rome we're in the region you've got to do as the locals do and that was such a nice um lunch uh beautiful spot and also there was a dog um which i guess belonged to the owner and he was the most gorgeous like golden retrieve you've ever seen and i mean look he clearly wanted our patty um but yeah we've decided he's our friend um and he was a lovely dinner guest um so can absolutely recommend cycling through to the different fishermen's villages super gorgeous tiny cabans um and yeah great fresh food can't be beaten another song for you now and then i'll continue with my border adventure this is hosie out with someone new go take this the wrong way in new who i was with every step that i ran to use only blue or black days electing strange perfections and any stranger i shoot with things be easier if there was a right way honey there is window and with that we've made it to our sunday sunday of the three-day city break in bordeaux in the surrounding areas we were headed back to the train station again via the marshes de capousa to try some more local produce and and we hopped on a train to centimetillon so this one took about 40 minutes right out into the wine region and honestly the views out the window from this train were gorgeous as you start getting through the vineyards and loads of open countryside just absolutely gorgeous part of the world and then you arrive at centimetillon and the station isn't quite in the town and so you do get out in the middle of nowhere a tiny station and then it was kind of a short walk to the town i guess if you're able to do a half-hour walk you're you're more than fine and then you get to this quaint town in the middle of all these vineyards loads of beautiful old houses and i mean there's plenty of commercial stuff there too now as well and but as you approach the town it gets more and more kind of pretty and kind of reminds me of like boosting the beast and the the provincial towns or whatever it's just yeah super super nice so we went centimetillon with the intention of doing some wine tasting and it did not disappoint and this is where i got confused before so you can get reds whites and rosés around bordeaux from bordeaux grown in the region but specifically centimetillon it's like a legal thing they can only grow and produce red wine so um they've got the grapes for the red wine and that's all they can produce there to be officially a centimetillon wine and the um the guide at the uh the vineyard that we took a tour around he told us that was because it was from some ancient decree i think at least 500 years old and where you know it was a very religious area and because red was the color of the blood of christ and they produced red wine and nothing else would do and that still is the case today so they still follow those same rules absolutely delicious wines we sampled five different ones from different years different vintages and you know depending on what your preference is you know the lighter the the harder the heavier i think they say and your kind of taste for tannins or not and you might have different preferences but it's a really good experience and i could really recommend the the place that we went it was called chateau cadet ball and the guy was really nice the wines were really good and it was a beautiful place as well and you could even pick a grape off the vine and try it which i did and actually the blacker grapes were were tastier the kind of more red grapes like um which i would normally kind of go for in the supermarket whatever they were actually quite bitter and so i think they weren't quite ready um but yeah absolutely delicious and a great experience um wine wise and then we headed back into town for a gorgeous lunch um yeah they sent me on a great place to go and there's loads of different places you could go and tour around um loads of famous ones i think ours was a grand crew classic um but there's different um different categories i guess you can do your research and pick the type of one that you would like to head to so that's a brief uh bit of insight into the wine world i'm by no means an expert but look if you do enough tours you're sure to become one um another song for you this is tears for fears with everybody wants to rule the world welcome to your life there's no time in bed even while we sleep we will budge right take on your best behavior turn your back on the nature everybody wants to it's my own design it's my own dream of us help me to decide help me to make new but it's not reading and i'd measure nothing ever less forever everybody wants to do there's a room where the light won't bite you for the house while the walls come down right now when they do i'll be right behind you so glad we're all sprayed in so sad they have to make it everybody wants to do the things that we need to do so much more so we're going to be able to do it. [Music] i can't stand this in the future and when we're the last of each other if we're part of what's to do say that you'll never never never be there one day the world will be there everybody wants to do [Music] for freedom and adventure the thing ever that's forever everybody wants to do [Music] and just like that we've reached the end of another weekly escape so um i've not really told you everything about centimillion but we found this gorgeous place for lunch we also had a nice mooch in the afternoon we found a lovely market again in the oysters of one of the churches in the main town which was great i bought some lovely chocolate there but they had all sorts of things you could sample there was like fudge there was um fish there was bread there was cheese loads of stuff and and not to be missed if you're a bit of a connoisseur for those type of things and i think we were lucky it was like a weekend market like a special occasion but i'm sure they do them more often uh than just once a year so you might be lucky too and i'll also spare you the story of how we got our flight delayed took our time in the city centre in bordeaux and then realised off like kind of got half an hour underlaid and then we almost made ourselves late but luckily we knew the way the tram was easy um there was quite a queue at security but we won't go into that because all as well ends well and we made it to our flight on time no time wasted so all in all had an absolutely brilliant time on a weekend away in bordeaux i would highly recommend it as a city break location i'd probably actually say four days rather than three if you wanted to do this itinerary i would have loved to have another day at the end for bordeaux itself because i feel like you know we spent half a day looking around but there was so much more to do so i would say yeah three and a half days would be perfect but two and a half was equally um a great experience so hope you've enjoyed the weekly escape and i will catch you next time to finish off we've got daft punk with one more time based on a punny bar that we went to which was called wine more time enjoy have a good weekend one more time! we're going to celebrate oh yeah all around stop the dancing one more time we're going to celebrate oh yeah all around stop the dancing one more time we're going to celebrate oh yeah celebrate oh yeah one more time one more time we're going to celebrate oh yeah all around stop the dancing one more time we're going to celebrate oh yeah stop the dancing one more time i know i'm just feeling celebration tonight celebrate don't wait to leave no you don't stop you can't stop we're going to celebrate one more time one more time one more time celebration you know we're gonna do it right time tonight hey just feeling music got me feeling to me need yeah come on all right we're gonna celebrate one more time celebrate and dance so free use this guy for feeling so free celebrate and dance so free one more time use this guy for feeling so free we're going to celebrate celebrate and dance so free one more time use this guy for feeling so free we're going to celebrate celebrate and dance so free one more time use this guy for feeling so free we're going to celebrate celebrate and dance so free one more time use this guy for feeling so free we're going to celebrate celebrate and dance so free one more time time the feeling so free we're going to celebrate celebrate and dance so free one more time use this guy for feeling so free we're going to celebrate celebrate and dance so free one more time use this guy for feeling so free we're going to celebrate so
