Looking back obviously yesterday we were just appointing to not be able to finish that game and come out of there with a man Our guys are certainly excited to play ready to play and In the game we were in position to win it and we just couldn't get it done, which is Tough though or tough to handle but proud of our guys to go down 14 nothing on the road And then four 19 straight points. We showed mental toughness physical toughness no question about it As I said in the post game for a conference you can't turn the ball over Forward times against anybody and expect to win the football game and you turned it over four times yesterday and on the road against the top 10 team and You know, we had opportunities and missed some opportunities on all three phases I had the situation where we were up the corner, but that's sort of been a blocked point for our touchdown if we just rescued a little bit better We put ourselves in position when the game and didn't finish and that's gonna be the key for us going forward It is a finishing but we're you know for everything We've been through or anything that we've been through at this point we're at the halfway point of the regular season and we've got the second half of the season coming up and Where I know our guys are hurt as they should be We let an opportunity to get away We've lost the two top 10 teams by a total of five points. So we're right there, and we just got to keep keep Daniel on that door and Eventually, it's gonna fly open when it does. It's gonna be awesome But really try to do guys and but they're I guess that they're hurting but eager to get back to work As you're on the practice field this evening and then get ready for a really talented Oklahoma team Injury was came out of that yesterday in great shape and For open up questions from me want to congratulate our volleyball team on a huge win over the Florida Gators today first time in Gainesville since 1986 so Relations to them that's an awesome win, and I know the game didn't go the way he wanted to but pretty cool to see Spencer I'll or get his first NFL start today, and I got a text from Dante Miller yesterday after the game telling me that he would be active for the New York Giants tonight and in their game He'll be playing special teams. So pretty cool for Dante and happy for him as well. So questions. Oh, I'm sorry I got the played well offensively to take your shivers came in at right tackle Case and then we got banged up a little bit. He'll be fine. They became in and did a really nice job for us Maybe open it. We thought did really well Decentively to me sure it's my plate grade, but I'm a fortune in Kevin Civil War had big turnovers and did a great job throughout the game and special teams was David Yuchey Had an awesome hit on the kickoff. It does a great job on all of our special teams and then tried for over as well With the way that he handled field position and then he won side kick at the end questions Hey, shame this day, but I mean, I know that you and dowel thoughtful and aren't about the fumbles just from a coaching perspective How do you kind of walk that line between we really need to get better at this and try not to hurt his confidence? And then does that line move as you go through the season large a great question. I mean You look at the play David where we were backed up in our own end zone. We got pressure They got some pressure on us Lenoris got his way out of trouble when the scramble But before he got his way out of trouble You know, he's got the ball in his right hand and the ball goes down and actually touches the ground And then he's able to come out of it and throw the ball down the sideline to our receiver that it got in behind the coverage And could have been a 90 yard touchdown pass. We weren't able to connect to him. So you don't want to like coach him out of Those plays because that's where he's just so good. We saw that against kentucky Um on a couple of those plays as well for explosive passes But at the same time this thing is sure that he's always not just Lenoris but all of our players are doing the things that we coach them to do from the ball security standpoint the techniques we taught he's uh Um getting the ball two hands on the ball when you're in traffic getting the ball away from the defenders when they're coming to you from inside out That's all of us, but you know, there's no question about it. And then it's two weeks in a row We've had fumbles on exchanges. So we certainly got to look at that I mean we practice that every day if some of the first things we do in practice the quarterback the running back get together Just practicing ball But we haven't done a good enough job of it because we had one last week with robbie and rocket and we had one yesterday from or some rockets So we got to look back at all of them and and um, you know get back to playing running football because when you were Um turning the ball when you have four turnovers and humbles like that It's hard to win football games and our margin for error. It's not very big and we've got to be we've got to be better there for sure It's saying Okay, can i was going to ask about nick harbor With with the touchdown and finally having a big way to get Folks off again. So I don't think we asked you about him yesterday. So I got asked about him the night I guess how do you think that'll help propel him moving forward having something to build up off of like that? No, I was good. See he played a lot of plays yesterday. He works his butthole failed He's up here all the time on his own with coach furry. It's very important to him So I was happy to see him have Uh success and and that's what he can do He's a big body that can run and then to be able to make a competitive catch in the end zone Yesterday end get that foot down with a really big play for our team and and for him as well And then there's obviously things that he's got to continue to improve on uh When it comes to playing the wide receiver position both great to see him make a play and And um, you know, he'll continue to all of our receivers continue to get better Um, um, uh, excited to watch them continue to develop Hey, same wanted to ask you about the last play of the game on the uh, the interception I think it saw a gauge largely and it kind of opened kind of closer to the sidelines Um, if what was the kind of the thought process on that play there after watching the tape and What did you think of sellers kind of throwing deep there instead of maybe like, you know thrown the gauge and trying to pick up some yards that maybe get a field goal back? Yeah, um, it's all the same thing and and you're right. I mean hindsight being 2020 It's easy for all of us myself included the signal on sunday and say hey, shoot if we just throw the ball Um, out there to the flat. He's going to catch it because they were playing loose coverings and they were You know, uh, we would have caught it run for promising yards, but not a bounds and in case the fuel goal, but Uh in the in the moment back, uh, two plays in a row They zeroed with the meaning they bought everybody and it had Vv back there with with no help And we had a play call where If they played cover zero, we had a chance to throw up a ball to nick and one-on-one coverage very similar to the previous touchdown And if they ended up, you know, the sky's missing playing something else We had a couple routes that we're breaking towards the sideline Um, there was a very similar plate of the one we scored on against made maybe earlier in the game Just a little tweak off of it But, um, you know, we felt like before the ball was snapped We saw pressure coming you were going to be covered zero Which means it should be nick man-in-man and one-on-one with somebody and we like that naps up Um, you know with the routes the guy that had Our defender in the flat kind of fell off on him for whatever reason and you know Staying with nick on the deeper route, but don't fall to this is and don't say fault at all Um, you know for whatever reason Nick quit running a little bit on that play and and we love to Jeff run in and at least you either draw a pass interference or Uh, make the cadre at the worst. It's a complete pass and you got time for you know, maybe one more slow to get out of bounds But we currently were, you know, like the opportunity for touchdown. We're trying to get into a little bit of a range There's no question about it, but everybody, you know You guys this athlete's not Nick Auburn. You're right. We get one-on-one coverage out there. We like our chances here as well Hey, Shannon talent. Uh, you mentioned how well Katie has played in a tough spot Uh, I guess one what did you see from him stepping in there and she'll know you never want to bench anyone because of injury But did he play well enough to open up a ballot like dashboard? He's still expecting anger to be there next week Now we'll continue to compete. Uh, I think the way that Katie was able to play yesterday Allen was because of the way that he practices He's the he keeps him a long way and Really it's been spring practice. He's come a long way and had a good preseason and somebody that we've been trying to You know keep bringing along and just to continue to develop that rotation on the offensive line because Right now we've got five hours and that's all the play and and we'd love to have you know two or three more guys rotating in there as well Baby be in one of them. So he practiced. Well put himself in position to Uh to go out here yesterday and performed and just like all positions We will you know continue to compete with there's been on our team that has a you know starting spot evening into the next six games Hey, shane, it's gordon Obviously was a really tough spot, but with with Alex Missing that kick there from from the view at all. Is that another position where you guys compete throughout the week or you just Try and build his confidence this week going into Oklahoma Yeah, I mean, I think it's um One of those situations there's certain play or certain positions quarterback punter and kicker where there's only one down the field of the fine And you don't want to be rotating guys through and through and then Alex has made from big kicks from putting in a couple of this There to kick that field goal, you know, we had a somewhat of a shot play Called on the play before to try and get father down the field and then the way they played coverage in the middle of being in more of a Shorter throw that we made so we didn't put him in the best position right there a week that can make that kick and he expects to make that kick and and um you know currently He's done some little good things for us and we expect them to continue to and we're always looking at everything and again I'll play with like old Allen with the previous question about casing in the offensive arm And we're competing everywhere. I don't just practice the practice. We can't eat and I know you guys think that I just you know Say that it's truly every week to guys the people to give us the best chance to be successful We'll be the ones out there, but we have a lot of confidence in Alex And that's holding after you miss that just yesterday that we needed to get him a little bit closer And he needed to be ready to come back and make a game winner later in the game And it almost happened on that drive. We were right there in position and and truly thought we were going to get him out there The chicken game winning field goal and what a story that would have been and just hate that We weren't able to finish that drive off sense of way to give them an opportunity to go make that final kiss He's saying uh, Ben, Brian, I have time to keep our questions first because sort of What has been part of your assessment of just by a Thompson across kind of his first 16 And the second is sort of how do you mentally prepare someone that young for like the grind of being an SEC offensive tackle? Which is probably one of the toughest jobs in this sport. Yeah It's absolutely one of the type of jobs in this sport, especially in this conference then Other conferences aren't like this. What's it be real? And Every when i'm sitting here in my office right now watching local homeless defense And it's like you need a Christmas. Like when there's the when do we play the team that doesn't have like great pass lighters And he can prevent a defensive tackle and in this conference. It doesn't happen a lot of other conferences on tape. It happens often Um, so for Josiah to be doing what he's doing Uh as a true person left back. Well, I think he's done an awesome job Uh, he doesn't look lost out there. He doesn't look over matched He doesn't look like a true freshman. Does he get beat at Tom? Sure when you're playing offensive line in this league, you're going to get beat from time to time against these defensive lines It was that we play in this conference They're gonna pull draft hits all over this conference especially on the defensive line more than any conference in america But I think Josiah's done a good job. The thing that we talked about him too too him about then on the second part of your question is just the the grind of it to me Is real when you're a truth when you're a freshman You're true freshman. You're coming from your senior year of high school where for a lot of these guys this season was done at like halloween And when we get to halloween this year, we got five games At that point guaranteed in the regular season So it's bad the mental grind of it, but then also the physical part of it like keeping its body weight up And when you play at 12 games season in this conference keeping your weight Uh, not just on the offensive line, but all positions and uh, I think one key with Josiah too Is the fact that camar beryl is lined up next to him whenever snap and uh, camar is an older god It's a really good player and there's done a lot of really good things for our team and he helps Uh, you know, Josiah in so many ways having that veteran older presence not lined up next to him Hey shane is john Coming into the season the uh corner fought opposite o' donnel was kind of up for grabs and of a question mark maybe Uh, how do you feel like judge and the car he had played? It seems like both of those guys have done really well as they kind of matched or exceeded your expectations Yeah, they've done really good. They're doing a really nice job That was a certainly a question like you said coming into it and and I think they've done really well credit for angry and our defensive guys with the way that those guys have gotten better um You know, o' donnel is playing at a really high level That's intersection he made yesterday was a big time play. I mean big time ball skills were basically in man coverage with no help and he was able to fall off his guy and go make that play That was big time and then judge Uh, he gains more and more confidence every week Specifically he's playing with is really cool to see of a car he Uh continues to get better So we really like that group and then we're excited about the guys behind them the Emory Floyd and and You know, David's faulting played a lot of small football around here. There's a real Solomon So that's a good group that's known that continues to um to get better And I said I should have mentioned this beforehand too. We talked about this in the scene today, but I certainly want to uh, send my condolences and prayers to the family of Tyler craft and you in the north Carolina football program or a tragic loss. Uh, having him Uh passed away yesterday after a two-year battle with cancer Uh hurts so much for that program to end up with hill the family obviously highly from some from south carolina Uh a team native o' donnel fortune so donnel certainly had a tough time with that yesterday on the plane ride coming home. That's a good game Uh losing finding out the news like he did so Thinking of them something we talked about as a football team today in our team meeting and and uh, you know brand for guys blessing homes That uh you and see football team and and highly family and friends and culture as well Hey, Sam. I want to tell you David go ahead Okay, I was going to ask about Nick Barrett obviously someone in for for some of the snap cell loss was able to be an outlet But he still asked he got out of him and what's the the plan? We're having moving forward at that faculty the um Alabama centers a really talented player. He's a little undersized But he's really athletic and really talented and we like Nick against him in that game just from a match up standpoint um being able to control the line of scrimmage a little bit so thought he did a good job and um, you know have to continue to work on disengaging and getting off blocks and finish in place and that will continue to come and And uh going forward I think it's week to week with Nick as far as our game plan off defensively who were playing and what his role is But he's an older guy. We have a lot of confidence in Go ahead, David Yeah, the channel is going to have 12,000 hours. We've all seen the statistic But when he came in uh through the program Did he immediately kind of take that leadership role to the s to be coaxed into that? The palace was he in the locker room when he first got here he uh I think a lot like a lot of our guys David Spencer or Locket or whoever transfers that have come in from other places. I think he like all those guys did a great job of coming in uh and kind of Owning his way where he earns the players respect for the way he works and does things I wouldn't say from a leadership standpoint Uh, it was automatic something that kind of happened Organically with him during his time, but he's done a good job He he uh in our team meeting friday night at the hotel who got up and spoke and thought it was very powerful what he said He was one of the guys certainly he got some imagine before I came in there and met with y'all yesterday at the press conference um uh that Uh in that locker room that was a bunch of hurt guys in that locker room and and he said some things in there But you know show great leadership in my opinion So right the way that he's playing and and how he goes about his business and he tends to continue to To come along as well Speaking of we got to get you guys some chairs in that post game fair talking stream and tough to lose so they um Are you hoping to get that done for y'all next time we go over there Shane, how do what it's called? Quick call if you mentioned them that tick from a Donald Is that part of the coverage if you may be looking to throw off the guy or is that just A good athlete or good instincts thing the ball made in the play I think more good athlete good instincts Understanding the situation, you know, he was a little bit least in coverage So he's able to he's in position to go make a play on the ball if they throw at his guy That if not Um, not that we expect him to handle. I mean other things the ball the guy The ball was being thrown to a guy running a deep crossing route from the mother's side of the field so for him to be able to defend his man that didn't have the awareness to see that route coming across the field or that was a big time play Thanks Hey, Shane, thanks for our west. Uh, it seems like we see less and less on side kicks actually converted Uh, can you kind of take us through just the background and the execution on getting that one yesterday? Yeah, I think it starts with with uh, the fact that Josie Camilla just likes Pete limbo They don't coach another position so during practice there with the kickers and hunters and staffers the whole time So they're really able to work on a lot of things During practice because they're giving coach the whole practice. Um, so that's where it starts number two Um, you know, that's something that we've been working and that's a tough ball to defend I mean credit tie with a big time kick Uh to be able to do that and to have the skill sets and the order to do that So it starts in practice as being able to play around with things like that and and uh, it's still good about doing it We always work on side kicks every weekend practice because you never know when you're going to come up So I've seen firsthand and how consistent chi is hitting that ball So that's where it starts. Uh, that was going to be our kick all along Cause it's not sure convincing the long side kids to take a couple of bounces and when people feel that that's hard That's when it starts, um um Only, uh, you know before 10 yards, but then kind of like been Closer to 10 yards. We had a kicker when I was in Oklahoma had a similar type kit We didn't do it quite the same wave. It had the same slide on the ball and it's really tough to defend Uh, and then in the game yesterday, we knew that was going to be our own fried kick hopefully our, uh, Alabama called time out And our right beforehand and then they saw the kick Uh, and then joe geese and I talked about potentially changing it and doing something else And I said no do the same thing. I don't care if they know where we're kicking it. It's still uh Pain in the rear end to try and defend so great job. I tried hitting the ball and great job by the other 10 guys on the cover team Uh getting in position to uh, to recover it and just wish we could have finished that drive and and walk out of there with a Game-winning feel goal or game-winning touchdown pass and feeling a whole lot better than we do right now But that's the work and that's where i'm headed right now. So thank you guys. I'll see you Tuesday
