They were envious.

“These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.”
 - Matthew 20:12 (NKJV)

A landowner hired men at the beginning of the day and agreed to pay them a silver coin for a day's work. Later in the day, he employed more men and some of them very late in the day. When he paid each of them one silver coin, some complained, saying, "These last men have worked only one hour, and you've made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day," Matthew 20 verse 12. They received exactly what they'd agreed to but based on what others had received, they were envious and dissatisfied. When it comes to the gift of everlasting life, you can be satisfied. In fact, you're not even in God's service because of what you get. Self-denial and self-sacrifice are old-fashioned virtues, but they're still virtues. Don't take your eyes off what matters most. The benefits are great, but the opportunity to serve God is in itself a real privilege. I'm John Bradshaw, for It is Written. [MUSIC PLAYING]
