Tactics Tuesday: Will the return of a centre forward mean a return to a disappointing performance

We believe both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson will be available for the Brighton game but does shifting Antony Gordon from his central role in the last two games mean we lose the intensity of our press?

'Every club, every day, the global sports podcast network work.' Hello and welcome along to Daily New Castle. My name is Ian Mackay, and I'm hosting a TikTok's Tuesday for the very first time, where we'll examine whether the classic mint is the best, whether the young pretender of the orange is going to take the number one spot and who the hell is it that eats the cinnamon one? How on a minute? That's a different podcast. Sorry. Welcome to the Daily New Castle and Tactics Tuesday, where I will be discussing an element of the tactics for the castle United in the games coming up with my co-conspirator, Captain Michael Graham-Slaw. How are you tonight, Captain Michael? I'm absolutely fantastic. I've just been finishing off some cinnamon gum, and I'm ready to go for a tiktok Tuesday. Sorry about that. I don't know. I've never hosted the tactics Tuesday, I don't think, and yet the very first time I heard that title, I had that joke in my head, so that's been a long time coming. I hope it was worth it. Now, planning on examining what possibly should be a no-brainer for everybody and how we're going to talk about it for half an hour, that's up to me and you, Michael. No confirmation yet because it's a little bit early here, but we're expecting both Alexander Isaac and Callum Wilson to be available for the Brighton game on Saturday. Now, I'm wondering if that means that we will be changing our tactics. I imagine it does because I can't imagine though they would get left out. But my question is when they've been missing and Gordon has led the line in the last two games, they've been head and shoulders above the rest of the season in terms of Newcastle's performance. Discuss. Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. I think you look at the last two games and you go, "Wow, wouldn't Newcastle have actually looked like a decent team?" Obviously, the end of the game. I was very cynical, I guess, if we did have a couple of chances and we didn't look like we were ever going to lose the game, which is more than you can say if I was self-hamped and born with performance, so definitely an improvement there and I think it's a fantastic point. In the last two games, we played quite a good press, which was missing beforehand. Alexander Reesak, maybe isn't that full fitness. I mean, we've all said since the start of the season, he just doesn't really look as usual self and let's be honest, he's a player with massive quality. I would argue he's up there with one of the best strikers in the world. So, you also have to look at the element of Colin Wilson potentially coming back. Obviously, he'd probably be more of a bench. I don't think anyone wants to start him for 90 minutes straight away, particularly with his injury record. Well, he offers something very different and I think with either Gordon and Wilson, all potentially going to play there on Sunday. I'm sadly sorry for getting whether 3 o'clock or not on telephones. I think with all three of those options there, it offers a lot of issues that bright and they're going to have to deal with and train them. So, I think it's very, very good that they're back but I'm not actually sure I would start the second Wilson straight away. You wouldn't start them, that is interesting. I think it's a no-brainer that if either of them are available, they'll start a centre forward because I do think if we accept that Harvey Barnes' quiet game against Everton was a bit of an aberration because I think he's been potentially our best man since the start of the season, certainly our best attacking man since the start of the season. So, he holds this left-hand position or we've had to sacrifice by Gordon playing down the middle. The effectiveness that he has when he's coming down the right-hand side and I think we'd want that. He's far and away our most attacking winger, certainly alongside Niggie or Jacob Murphy. I'd want to start with Gordon going down the right and Isaac, has he really ever put a foot wrong when he's played centre forward? So, I think it's a little bit of a no-brainer if they're available, that that is the way that we would line up. But I'm just slightly concerned that that might change the quite aggressive press that we first saw against Manchester City and which worked pretty effectively against Everton as well. I nearly said Middlesbrough for some reason then. Why? Another sea level end. So, yeah, that press was very effective. I mean, I know it was a goalless draw but we hammered Everton, Neil Neil, didn't we? Ten corners to Neil, et cetera. Clearance is off a line that nobody knew anything about in a missed penalty. We should have won two or three Neil that game. So, where would you start? Well, how would you start if you're not going to start with Isaac or Wilson up front? Yeah, I will say the reason I'm skeptical about starting either player is more their injury record. Now, brighten on exactly a heavy team that liked to play a good football. I think there could be a fantastic game of football on Saturday. But I've maybe stopped because they do like to sort of play that, you know, a high line and they like to play a bit more sort of takey taker you can maybe say it's not quite that. But they like to have a little bit of the ball, like the passive above, that maybe in a game where Isaac or Wilson haven't quite got the legs in them, a Gordon through the middle, Wilson, not Wilson, if he on the right and bonds on the left could be the way to start the game. I would definitely if we're drawing or if we're probably losing the game. I would definitely bring them on just give them a minute and I'm sure that, you know, Isaac or Wilson would completely change the game. They'd probably play really, really well. I think Wilson scored against a brighten in the 3-1 defeat last season. Well, it's one of those where I'm trying to think more long term and I think we need to manage the minutes of them both. Gordon didn't feature for England against Finland, did against Greece, obviously, and what was poor performance. But I think playing them up front is maybe the way to go. Just for the start of the game, as well, we'll use the other two back in. See, that's an interesting choice. I would have thought cast-eye in if the pair of them are sitting on the bench and they've done the same amount of training coming back from an injury that you start Isaac and you're looking to bring Wilson on at half time. But if Isaac's lasting for an hour because he's has trained more recently, you change Isaac for Wilson after an hour, 65 minutes. I think he's struggling to be able to do. Something as neat as that if you play Gordon down the middle. And might end up bringing Isaac on as a left winger, which maybe we need because Barnes could be quiet again like it was against Evan. But the good thing is with these two players back that we certainly have a lot, a hell of a lot of options going forward. So, I think I'm going to pause there, part one. Do I look on research the rest of the flavours for ticktacks? You're going to give us a first sponsor, I believe, Michael. Oh, yes, I am. Do you have a story to tell that the world needs to hear? Have you struggled with reaching new audiences who are engaged with your story? It might be time for you to start the podcast. Let me tell you about a platform we use here for the Global Sports Podcast Network. You see, Michael, that failed Tony the Tiger impression tripped you up, didn't it? You knew it. I looked good at doing it and that's where you stumble over that last word, nevertheless, I think everybody gets the enthusiasm we have for working with a very, very straightforward system like Zincaster. Anyway, let's move on to part two. Now, the answer, I think, I've probably already given which was who would you leave out if you wanted to accommodate Isaac and or Wilson because the team has played really well in the last two games. For me, I'd move Gordon off to the right, so it would be Murphy that would sit on the bench and I'd play Isaac down a little, assuming he's fit. What would you be? You're not going to leave anybody out from what you said. I'm going to leave anyone and everyone else. No, I think it's one of those where, as much as I like Jake and Murphy, we said, oh, I said at the start this season, I could potentially see him getting in the England set up. If he played well, maybe hindsight, a lovely thing. But I think coming off the bench, he's actually been a much better player for us this season. I can think of Tottenham and Fulham, where when he came off the bench, he got cysts. I think he only played a combine sort of about 70 minutes in those games. So, it's one of those where I think his natural position for us now, and that sounds quite bad, but his natural position is going to be on the bench and sort of coming off to try and tune games because he is a good passer of the ball. I think he's crossing is particularly improved. Murphy misses out for me if Isaac or Wilson, if Isaac or Wilson start, but ideally, it all depends on how fit Wilson and Isaac are, because if they're not, if they can only play 45 minutes, I don't really want to start either of them. I'd rather rest them, and then we can use them for three or four months than risk than picking up an injury against a high intensity, high-piers team, like Brighton Canby. Obviously, sometimes they're slowed down, but they can play with that high intensity at the same time, which could lead to muscle injuries for two players who we know are all too well, love an injury. Do you love an injury? Excellent. Now, if we do play a second forward, let's assume that they are fit enough. I mean, Isaac's only missed a couple of weeks with a sore toe, so it won't have stopped him from doing a lot of his training, a lot of his fitness training. He bounced me for like four months with a bad toe. It wasn't a serious injury. Come on, Michael. If we do play, we're reverting to our tried and trusted tactics, if you like, which is how we would have picked the team at the start of the season, it's how we've picked the team going into all of these games where we've ended up struggling, winning sometimes, but not really performing very well. Are our tried and trusted tactics an open secret now? Can we catch anybody out with that? I can remember we destroyed Brighton 4-0 two seasons ago because they had no answer to the press, which was really good, and they love playing out from the back, which they were particularly poor at doing that night. Do you think it's a case of our tactics having been found out, which is why we struggled so much in this first five, six games in the season, or have we just not deployed them to maximum effect? I think you've hit the nail on the head with not deployed them to maximum effect. I think when you look at Arsenal, you look at Liverpool, you look at Manchester steady, and I am not saying by any means we're on the same level as those three teams, but they play their way and you find a way to deal with it. Newcastle, maybe it's because we don't have that sort of second option off the bench. Obviously, Manchester City have a ride of riches, Foden, Dokku and Silvino, OK, I'm on against us, while Liverpool, their front lines is round, renowned as one of the best in the league, Arsenal, they've now got a few injury problems, but still got a fantastic line for a blank. Well, Newcastle, if you take away, he's like a Gordon, let's see, he's like a Gordon because Barnes is a little one-dimensional. There's not really a player there that can do a bit of magic to win you again. Wilson's good, but he's one of those sort of, not brutality-style strikers like the Eagle Costa, but he'll rough you up, he'll get in your face, and you'll end up scoring a brace or something like that, and he'll tell you about it. While he's on Gordon, I'll probably do any one second really produce that magic, and I think without a number ten, which of those three, well Manchester City and Arsenal probably have an abundance of a number of players that could play that ten, Liverpool not so much, but that's why they play with a false man. Newcastle don't have that creative player, so we're so reliant on that intensity and that press, that when it doesn't work, plan these, they're not really there, and I think having a full squad back, if we don't get any injuries between now and November, I think the descent, the winter period, could be a fantastic one for us, I think we could absolutely excel, but at the start of the season, just well players have found the lakes, we haven't had that same intensity, obviously it hasn't looked great, but I still think the best is still the come. I'm going to pull you up a little bit there, we don't think that we've got that creative midfield player, is that not what Bruno's best role is, and are we not seeing the first signs for when he gets up to full fitness, but it's a role that Tannali can certainly take, and a pair of those in tandem ought to be able to unpick defences with a student-through ball. There's played 900 minutes between them and got one assist, and it's one of those where do they have the quality on the ball, potentially, but they're much better in that Deeba role, where they play the pass and pro potentially into the player, the creative player to give them that space, let's say James Madison at Tottenham, if we'd signed Madison he wouldn't really fit the system granted, but it would be that kind of example of, oh you've got that creative player who can play that pass and pick a line, Bruno in Tannali, brilliant, but they kind of play the same role, and they play a little bit Deeba, and because of that they don't often get that assist through that, I think Bruno played a more attacking role last season, definitely, than he did this season, but our most creative player, when he's played, has looked like a Joe Wil- well, a midfield, I should say, he's not been our most creative, but Joe Wilick, when he's come on, he's looked like he's played a little bit more in advance role, so then you're looking at right, is that what Joe Linton's trying to do? And Joe Linton definitely does not have the passing range to be a creative midfielder, but actually when I'm looking at the stats here, he's made more creative passes for us this season that, well, T passes for us than Bruno and Sandra Tannali, but it looks at things combined, so it's one of those where they do have that potential, but have they done it this season, absolutely not. I love the way you just pull a step from your hat, Michael, and blow what I'm thinking out of the water, which is annoying. I want to think that Bruno and Tannali are world-class, and I'm sure I've seen Bruno put a few fantastic balls through defender's legs and on a plate for people, although I've probably seen Sean Longstaff do that once or twice as well, so perhaps you're right. It's down as a key, obviously it's down as a key pass, and I can't distinguish what makes a key pass. These are sort of up there and stuff like that, and let's be honest, I've seen plenty of bets that have been lost, because up there have looked at a shot and gone. It's a bit slow to be a shot, and people have lost out on thousands of times, so it's one of those where the stats, obviously, we have to take a bit of common sense and a bit of the eye test alongside the stats, which sometimes I'm guilty of not doing, but I just think we've been far a bit too reliant on Gordon as the creative spark so far this season. Maybe that changes, maybe Bruno plays a little bit further forward and becomes that attacking force. I mean, he was my most creative player by a mile last season, dug us out with many holes, maybe Tannali being next to him to actually not help him, as those two find out sort of the best way to work together, but it's very interesting to see, but I just feel like we need a number 10 as a backup, not starter, but just when you are in that game, like the nil-nil against Everton, who can look at James Tarkowski and go, "Right, Gordon's running behind, a little flick over, and it's there rather than Bruno and Tannali, who are sitting a little bit deeper." It does make sense, and as I say, it does make sense to this back to back stats, and I'm really annoyed. I'm really annoyed at it for being so innocent. Oh my god, I want to think we're fabulous. I'm going to break again, easy at the end of part two there, largely because I've got a little extra bonus discussion that I want to have right at the end, so I'll pass it over to you, Michael, for a message from another sponsor. I did it to only the Tiger there, but in the wrong place. Welcome back, dear listeners. We're going to do part three now. Michael, a simple question. Tune the fat a little bit around who we think's available. How are you going to line up against Brighton now? Maybe play a little bit reserved, just because I know how good they can be in an attack. In three of these seasons, we've seen Brighton be a little bit toothless. They don't seem to have that this season. I'd probably start, obviously, hope it's going to go and go. Trippy is injured, so Tina starts. I believe Fabian Sharon, Dan Bern are both fit, so they're the two centre backs. I wanted to play a Lewis Hall, but I'd probably start Kelly, just to be a little bit more defensive. Then we've got Bruno, Bernal, and Ali, Jolynn. I think in the midfield, I think in the midfield three writes itself, although you could argue for a long staff or a Willard. And then front three, no. I would start Anthony Gordon on the left, and this is going to go against what I said earlier, but I'd start Jacob Murphy on the right, and Alexander is back up front. And then if that doesn't work, we've got Barnes coming off the bench who can be electric. Murphy can come off if he's done nothing, but I think the main thing for us is going to be getting in behind that back line, and Barnes is a little bit slow at playing the pass. While Murphy's a little bit quicker, we saw in the Tottenham game last season, for example, I know I was at last season before, either way, we saw we've seen numerous times of Jacob Murphy's happy to play that ball in behind first time that went on running the player. He's quite good at it, so tactically, that's the best way to get at Brighton, so that's probably actually what I'm going to go. My heart says differently, but my head says that's the way we should go. Assuming that I'm pretty much in agreement with you Michael, however, I would definitely play Lewis Hall instead of Lloyd Kelly. I think he really stood up in that Everton game. I was very impressed with the way he just pocketed there right when he didn't get a kick, and I've forgotten his name again, and you told me the last time we were talking about it. I think defensively, he's coming on in leaps and bounds, and I'd want to encourage him and give him the confidence by giving him a proper run up left back instead of interchanging them. If it's wrong, I've got Lloyd Kelly on the bench. I definitely picked Lewis Hall, and I'd stick with Harvey Barnes. As I say, I think he's been our top man this season. Maybe you tell him as he's going on, not to cut inside every single time, and to knock it past the full bag and get across in early, because you've got a big centre forward there now with Isaac up front. He can get around the back, and if he's there with Joel Linton on the left and with Hall on the left, they can be overlapping for each other. I don't think we're going to dry up supply of crosses from the left hand side with those three brain. Now, that's Brighton at home. What sort of changes would you make for the next game away at Chelsea? Do we have to ease off, because we're away from home? Yeah, so that's the Premier League game, isn't it, rather than the Cup? Yeah. I think we've probably got to bear in mind that we're going to play the same team twice in three days, and I think away from home, maybe we need to play a little bit differently. Maybe what I'm saying for Brighton is when we'll play a little bit more rigid, a little bit more defensively. Maybe that's what we need to do against Chelsea, and I'm being a little bit negative, should we say. Maybe Michael? Really? That's not like you at all. Yeah, maybe I'm being a little too and negative. You know, we are at home. We've got a fantastic record at home, and maybe I'm being a little bit too positive about Brighton. So maybe we do what I've just said about playing sort of Lloyd Kelly left back against Chelsea, and we play a little bit more defensive there. What I would say is if we do play Harvey Barnes, I think you've kind of got to start Lewis Hall with him, because Lewis Hall's going to get down the wing overlap, get the violin with that crossing. So it gives you the sort of the full back of thought of right. Well, they could go inside or they could go on the outside. Well, with Lloyd Kelly, and we got the assist against, I think it's Tottenham, and it's a fantastic overlap and run, but as a natural centre back, I, to be honest, he looks like a natural centre back, more than he looks like a left back and might be run. But he doesn't make those runs quite as much as what Lewis Hall would. So you're probably right, I'll be honest with Hall and Barnes against Brighton, and then what I've said with Murphy and Kelly do against Chelsea, and then revert those changes again for when we play them at home in the cup. It's an interesting one. There's no one size fits all, I think that's, to be honest, why I quite like talking about things on Tylic's Tuesday, because everyone's got different opinions. Yeah, and you're also indirectly endorsed Cinnamon TikToks, which I think just casts everything you say into some sort of doubt. I think, yeah, I would be more defensive at Chelsea. Maybe Lloyd Kelly, maybe Gordon down the left, and Murphy on the right, that sounds sensible. But of course, all of our discussions here could be thrown into complete landfill, if Esak and Will, so if we've just been taken in by what Eddie said before the international break, and Esak and Willson are still on the treatment table, then we've had this discussion a few weeks too early, so time will tell, I guess is all we can say on that. Now, I'm not sure this counts as tactics, but it's something I've been reading about in the last day or two. Well, Eddie, how are we coming England manager? He's not something I've read about in the last day or two. However, hearing that Tottenham might come after him, if Amanda is David, he gets involved with Tottenham, and then today that he's on a short list for Manchester United to replace 10 Harg. Simple question. Is Eddie, and I know I was pretty definitive about it last night, is Eddie going anywhere? I think if there's anywhere he's going to go, you could argue for Manchester United because of the project, the legacy. I don't think he goes to Tottenham, and without offending any Tottenham fans, they aren't that much of a step up from Newcastle that you start a project again. While Manchester United because of the history, you could argue maybe you would look at it in regards to where they are on the pitch, they're behind us. I think, you know, there's such a big project that needs to happen there. But also with that, we heard for about the year that Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth didn't get on. If I'm Ashworth United, then their initial thought is, "Oh, we'll bring in Eddie Howe as well." It just shows that people haven't, you know, we've just been reading a load of Tosh, really, but I don't see him going anywhere. I think if he was going to go anywhere, it would be the England job. And as we spoke about it last night, his personality at the moment doesn't suit that, he wants something less full-time. So I think unless maybe a Liverpool, an Arsenal, or a man's city came in, I don't think he goes anywhere. But you think how many times that Amanda and Nerdad said yes to Eddie? Is he going to be able to answer the one question that they ask him? No, when they say, "Come to Tottenham, Eddie." So it is a good question because I think, I mean, well, we've seen that they do have a very good relationship. And it's one that as a manager, I think you probably get very rarely, very rarely I reckon you have a good relationship with those in charge. So it all depends, like, how much does Eddie feel like he owes Amanda and Nerdad for giving them that role in the first place. But he loves it up here, Pindall loves it up here. I think it would take a really, really big offer and probably complete control over transfers, et cetera, for him to go. Either that or on our side, we're going to have to do something that really, really annoys him, like maybe, you know, say, "No to Margay again." But it all depends really because it's hard to say what Eddie has going to be thinking and I could see why you would want to move. But the way things are right now, why would you want to leave Newcastle? I don't think he will, you know, but I can see the temptation in each of those. I don't think he will get complete control over transfers at either Tottenham, not with Daniel Levy at the helm, nor at Man United, where they've appointed almost as a bigger backroom team as the Piff have done at Newcastle. I don't think you want to go and work with Dan Ashworth, not after the implied criticism after Ashworth left. I mean, I don't know, because I'm reading between the lines and reading something that wasn't there. I don't think they go on particularly well. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on that. Perhaps we can have some suggestions from our listeners, because you can leave your messages for us at the end of the podcast on Spotify. That will be interesting. But I think it's time for us to close, Michael, and to be fair, you haven't been miserable once. That's because you haven't got your Captain Misery hat on.
