Welcome in to the Captain Jay Good Morning Show. On ESPN 1000 and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Jay, we've got Jay Moore. We got you for a three hour ride. We're on this Tuesday morning. We're up in phone lines for you at 312-332-ESPN-332-3776. Is our telephone number and we are still in the afterglow of the Bears. Being four and two on the season. They've been in the Jacksonville Jaguars and now they're on the bye week and it's deserved. An opportunity for the Bears to get healed up and get ready for Washington. Their next game on the schedule. But I'm still happy about what we saw. And I always make it very simple. For me, as a Bears fan, as a sports fan. Would you rather see your favorite team win a game or lose a game? We don't have time to parse through and say, well, I'm not sure, I'm not sure, I'm not sure. Here's the thing. Imagine what Bears Monday yesterday would have been like if the Bears were lost against Jacksonville or lost against Carolina or lost against the Rams. It's a three game winning streak and you take nothing away from the Bears from doing that. People can look at the hierarchy of the NFL and say, well, I'm not impressed. But what do you think of the Bears coming into the season? Did you think that the Bears would be in a position where they could win three games in a row? No matter what the competition is. With all these moving parts with a rookie quarterback and Caleb Williams and trying to figure out who Shane Waldron is and offensive coordinator and Mattie Reflus is a head coach and just some of these new parts on the offense. Did you know what the Bears were through six games coming into the season? You can have your predictions. But the bottom line is that you'd rather win those games than lose them no matter what the competition is. You beat the teams that are on your schedule, especially teams you're supposed to beat and the Bears were able to do that. One of the major reasons why the Bears are in this position right now at four and two in a very strong NFC North is the quarterback play and the offense. I say this all the time on the show that I'm really into the balance of my favorite football team. For years and years and years, for decades, me growing up on the South side, watching the Chicago Bears with my dad and my uncles and family, gathering around the TV and watching the Chicago Bears, one thing we knew for sure, no matter how good or bad the team was, we knew that the defense would do what it could to be able to help the cause, that the defense would be strong enough to hold up their end of the bargain. And here we are in 2024. The defense is good enough to hold their end of the bargain. But then it's the other part. It's the offensive side of the football. It's always been a struggle. More times than not for me as a Bears fan and you as a Bears fan, you've seen the Chicago Bears struggle to try to find that quarterback, that dude, someone that can carry you for a decade. Perennial playoff teams, all these things, right? So I want you to think about what you've seen from Caleb Williams so far and it's still early in his career. He's a rookie. He's got four wins, four out of his first six games, victories. It's not always been great. But the point is though, is that you've seen some really great signs from Caleb Williams that he's getting it. Incrementally, step by step, game by game, we see some elite throws. As a college football fan, I saw those elite throws from Caleb Williams in his junior year sometimes and his senior year. But I knew that he was a guy that should be the number one quarterback and the number one pick in the draft because he's such a great athlete. But in my lifetime of watching quarterback play for the Chicago Bears. The number one guy was Jim McMahon. And the reason why Jim was the winners because Jim helped the Bears win a Super Bowl championship. 49 wins, 49 and 17 as a quarterback for the Chicago Bears. That's number one. Number two, you think about Mike Tomzak. Tomzak was 23 and 11 in 34 games. He was always in a quarterback controversy. If you remember that era cap, it was always Tomzak in a controversy and he was always solid. You think about someone like Jim Harbaugh. We see him now as a head coach and a genius when it comes to football on the offensive side. But Jim Harbaugh was pretty steady as a quarterback for the Bears. He was 35 and 31. From there, you take a look and you kind of say, okay, well, who's next? I mean, Rex Grossman was part of the team that had the Bears in the Super Bowl. But Rex had some to do with that Super Bowl as much as the trainer. But he was there though. It was a tough season as you recall cap because when the Bears went to the Super Bowl, I don't know what it was like for you down the dial. But for me, it was my first year being at ESPN Chicago and I was like, hey, the Bears win. The Bears won the game. Yeah, Rex sucks. Hey, but the Bears won the game. Yeah, Rex sucks. It was one of the most difficult times in my career where we're excited about the Bears, but no one believed because no one believed in Rex, but yet that team got to the Super Bowl. Well, it's like the 2018 team. Mitch sucks, but the defense is amazing, right? Yeah. They go 12 and four. I was arguing with Shay this morning. You were there. I said the second best quarterback in Bears history is Kayla Williams. And I gave the number one nod to Sid Luckman. He's in the flipping hall of fame. Sure. Shay said, did you see him play? No. Okay, the best quarterback in Bears history that you've watched is Jim McMahon. It's Kayla Williams. No, you know, if you're asking me, it is Jim McMahon because I remember the 85 Super Bowl team. And then here's the thing. Jim is not a Super Bowl champion or not a Hall of Fame quarterback, but he was the best that I saw because even with injury cap, he played and he was tough. He was tough. No question. He had 49 wins and 17 losses in a Super Bowl championship. To me in my lifetime, Jim is it. Jim was a really good football player. There's no question about it. But remember Dan Hampton's famous line? Yeah. What did he say? What about the monkey? Monkey driving a limo. Yeah. So, Jim was a good football player. No question. And he embodied the city and that personality of that team. But I never looked at Jim McMahon and went, we got the dude. Like I love the personality. He was cool. The guy we got now. It's like a rocket ship we got on. I'm just telling you that, you know, it's Jim McMahon for me because he might have been the monkey driving limo. However, Vince Evans couldn't get that done. Nope. You know, in some of those quarters, Steve Fuller couldn't get that done. He was a fine backup, but he was not a guy that could lead the team to the Super Bowl. Again, that's a heavy, latent defensive team. Those dicker teams. But Jim put it right on the money to McKinnon and to Galt. And he had a strong running game and Walter Payton. And they got to the Super Bowl championship. So Jim is to me is the top. Even though Jay Cutler has more victories, Jim had more quality. Jim McMahon is one. I wrote down Tom's act. I wrote down Jim Harbaugh. I wrote down Eric Kramer for that one year in '95 that we saw it, but beggars can't be choosers cap. I guess my whole point of looking at the top four quarterbacks in my lifetime and then trying to figure out where Caleb Williams fits is. My hope is that Caleb Williams matches all the records and has way more wins than Jay Cutler or Jim McMahon and more Super Bowl championships. That's the hope. He has all the ability. Now it's about wins and production. Yeah, I've never seen a Bears quarterback in my lifetime look like that guy that we have now. Never. Mitch through six touchdowns against Tampa and never did I look and go. Oh my God. Again, I was his biggest booster in town. Thought he could develop into a really good player. I think he'd be this. No, thought he'd be a good player. He never got there. Rex, fine, fine average. I was never a Cutler guy, did not like to trade the day they made it. Thought they gave up too much. Teams don't get rid of 26 or 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterbacks and he never went to the Pro Bowl again. He was the epitome of mediocrity. 52 and 52 was the Bears quarterback. Never embraced the face of the franchise thing. Just not my cup of tea. He was just 52 and 52 because of the longevity and the Bears got tired of the same treadmill of mediocrity or less than that and say, Jay, this is your team. They didn't make this major switch in the middle of a season all that. Jay was the guy, Cap, for 104 games. He was the guy for the Chicago Bears. So that's why I don't have Cutler on my list because a lot of it was on him, but a lot of it was on the Chicago Bears as well. And the why that was, Cap, is because they did not have enough weapons on a regular basis for Jay to go to, rickety offensive line and offensive coordinator almost every year. So the Bears were just not ready to be able to support Jay. Jay was never going to be great with the Chicago Bears. That's why next man up on my list is Jim McMahon. When I'm giving you, Cap, when I say this about Jim McMahon or Mike Tom Zach or Bob Avelini or Eric Kramer, all those guys, I'm just looking at quarterbacks from when you were 10 years old to now. Luckman, we did not see, but we know that that is the guy. Historically, but I was one of my dad's best friends. But just from 1970, from 70, it has to be Jim McMahon. And I think that Caleb has an opportunity, and again, like all these other quarterbacks, has an opportunity to be great. And this is the best infrastructure that I can remember from a Bears organization and all that time. Where does Justin fit on the list? He's on there with Jack Ken Cannon. - And Trubisky. - And Chris Chandler. He's down there. - Like did Justin ever throw as many touchdowns as Mitch? - I don't think so. - No, no. - I don't think he did. - Justin was, is this right, 10 and 28? That was his record in 38 games as a starter with the Bears. Mitch was at 29 wins. Mitch is fourth all time in wins since 1970. It goes Cutler, McMahon, Jim Harbaugh, Mitch Trubisky. Trubisky was 29 and 23. - 29 and 23. And he had a 28 touchdown season, right? - I believe so. - I believe he had a 28 touchdown season in 2018. Just never, ever could process. And I've never seen a Bears quarterback process like the guy we got now. - 24 in 2018. - 24. - I've never seen a Bears quarterback look like the guy we have now. - I get that cap, but again, with perspective, he has to play a full season to be able to evaluate if he's gonna be in all time great or not. He might break a lot of different records in your one. I'm just saying that it's, this is where, again, our Hot Take Society comes in. Caleb Williams could be a top five quarterback that I've ever seen with the Chicago Bears. He probably is there right now, just based on his ability. However, numbers and production matter. If we say that he's the best quarterback that we've ever seen, or number two, before his season's over, so then what if there's a downturn? Then do we adjust for inflation? - I think, yeah, of course. - Yeah, yeah, I'm not doing that. That's not me as a fan. - But isn't it fair, like Cody, through six games, isn't it fair to say we really haven't seen a Bears quarterback look like this? - Agreed. That's my point. - And if the next 11 games, he's just dreadful. A, that would be stunning. And B, then you go, "Oh, nope." Those six games were a mirage, and oops. - Yeah, but I don't see any scenario short of God forbid injury that he looks, doesn't look the part. That doesn't mean he'll have a passer rating of 138 every week. He's gonna have a game where, wow, the heck was he looking at? - 'Cause he's a rookie. - Anybody, Tom Brady made mistakes when he was his veteran. That happens, you're human. - Like, we've never had a guy look like this, never. - C.J. Stroud had a three interception, no touchdown game in the middle of the season last year. But I don't think, like, that's going to happen. Nobody looked at it and was like, oh, he's terrible now. We're still going. He's in the middle of one of the greatest rookie quarterback seasons we've ever seen. - Yeah, I would say that I'm very, as I said yesterday, I'm very pleased by how the offense has gotten better over the last three games. But again, the evaluation is not based on three games. You can be excited about what you've seen with the Chicago Bears, but also say, okay, let's see if that momentum continues. The hope is, is that these three games are not the high point of the Chicago Bears' offense. I'm glad, I'm hoping that it's not that way. My hope is, is that it gets even better than what we've seen. But I cannot make the bold declaration that the Chicago Bears' offense is fine, it's fixed, and this is the greatest thing we've ever seen. It's not fireworks yet. It's not. You need a year to be able to see whether or not the kid is, it's only fair. We can be excited, but also not be so over-the-top that this is the greatest thing we've ever seen. - Yeah, I think that's fair. - I just, I've never seen a Bears quarterback that I look and go, that's the dude. Like with Mitch, it was, well, I, I hope he's the guy, I think they can develop him into the, this guy, excuse me, is the dude. He's the dude, God. Alex has been killing me. He's the dude. He absolutely is the dude, and I've never had a guy in my life where I looked and went, that's the guy, right there. - You never said that about me? - Every day. - Three, one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, three, two, ESPN, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six is our telephone number. Cap says that Caleb Williams is already the best quarterback that we've ever seen where a Bears uniform. Do you agree? Like he's the best quarterback that I've seen through six games in a while. You said, tell us that Jimmy Man never had a streak like this, never had, they kind of pop him in a circumstance like boy, this offense is moving. - Maybe Jim was a good player. - Yes. - He never looked like this. - Yes. - He looked like he was in control. He looked like a leader. He was a tough guy. He was a personality. He never looked like this. Not in the Bears uniform. No shot. - I can be excited, Cap. I can be excited about what I've seen. I think we all can as Bears fans, but at the same time, we have to be able to watch how he develops even further. 'Cause if I say that he's the best quarterback I've ever seen in the Bears uniform, I'm no better than what we see over our shoulders every morning. On the bottom of the screen, Caleb Williams, the best Bears quarterback ever. Well, that's the hope, but not through six games into the bye. - I know what my eyes tell me. I know what my fairly trained eye tells me. Like if I was, I was an NBA basketball scout. - Correct. - I could go in a gym and go, I think that guy's gonna be good and there were some you miss and some you hit. I'm telling you that if I walked into the gym, so to speak, and watch this guy play, my report would be he will from day one be the best quarterback in the history of the franchise. That's what I would write. - You know when you see something great is when someone can be able to flourish in the eyes of adversity. Has he gone through long losing streaks? Has he gone through a slump himself offensively in the NFL? That's the whole thing. You wanna be able to see chapter in verse how he's able to develop that way. That's like a basketball player cap. You might recruit the greatest shooter and he has a two for 13 on the sheet. Wait a minute now. And he has another three for 13 on the sheet? How does he come out of that? Will he be able to flourish and be able to snap out of it? Or will he be a slump like that for the rest of the season? What game broke him that he wasn't the shooter that you recruited? The same thing in the football. Again, as a freshman or as a rookie in the National Football League, we have to see the ebb and flow of what Caleb Williams does before we can determine, yep, the grace I've ever seen in a Bears uniform. - But I remember walking into the gym and watching a guy play, I'm like, who the hell is that? - It was Kevin Garnett, he was 16, 2017, 17 years old. - He said the same about Tim Leggler too. - You said what the hell is that? - I walked into a gym in Rapid City, South Dakota. - Yeah. - I'm like, okay, that's the best shooter I've ever seen. Of course, he won the three-point contest and he was amazing. They scored 47 the night I was there. But he had one skill set. He could shoot. - Yeah. - But when I walked in the gym and saw Kevin Garnett, I'm like, okay, that's not normal. - Yeah. - And he's in the hall of fame for a reason, amazing. So yeah, I think Caleb is on that track to be special. - Yes, but again, life is not as easy as four and two in your first six games. It is now, but what about on the other side? No more bi-weeks, what are you gonna do? - I'm not being pessimistic. I'm just being cautiously optimistic by saying, and by the way, in his first year, I have them in the playoffs like everybody on the show. We have them in the playoffs. - We do? - But now, again, the ebbs and flows, the peaks and the valleys, how does he handle it? How does he often handle it? How does Shane Waldron handle it? That's all, I mean, right now, the arrows pointing up way up because of the three-game winning streak. Now, now what? - We'll see. I mean, they've done a good job at adjusting and when I listened to Iberflus yesterday, both with us and then he was even more expansive with the media about the first 15 plays being scripted, Shane Waldron did that in Seattle. They decided to try something different for the rookie quarterback, and then the leadership group came in and said, "Hey, we gotta go back and we gotta script this." So they did, and they're three and all since they did it. - All right, let's have your calls in. You heard what Cap said, you heard what I said about Caleb Williams, the quarterback of the Bears. Tell me about Caleb Williams in particular. Cap says that Caleb Williams is already the best quarterback we've seen where a Bears uniform in six games. My opinion is that the evaluation comes through a body of work and six games is fine and we've seen some great things as far as development's concerned. It's not like I've never seen development from a rookie quarterback before, but the point is is that the Bears as a team, as an offense, have to get better. It's a great starting point through the first six games, but before I crown Caleb Williams the best we've ever seen, I like to see him for maybe a year, and I think that's only fair because I wanna see what it looks like Cap when the backs against the wall or if the Bears are gonna continue to flourish this way. - Well, let me ask you a question. I'm the general manager of the basketball team or the football team. We'll call him the Chicago Bears, and I call you in. Jonathan, I need you to go sign or scout all the quarterbacks out there. And the whole litany that you go to scout, Jake Cutler, Jim McMahon, you're seeing all of them in their primes. - Yeah. - Max Grossman, Mitch Trubisky, Justin Fields, and I said, we've got to pick one tomorrow. Who are you taking? - Well, because it's 20, we're doing this in 1995 or doing this in 2024. - No, they're all in their prime right now. - You like the ability to have a quarterback that can run out of the pocket and has a strong arm. That's different than all these other guys that we mentioned before, from the Tom Zacks to the Mike Phipps to all these, Jack Cannon, Dave Craig. You rather have the guy that's a quarterback and an athlete 'cause that's what you're looking for today. A multi-purpose type of quarterback that can do multiple things. - Okay, so I call you in tomorrow. I said, we're meeting at 8.30. Be there, bring your coffee, and we're gonna get this hammered out. You walk in. Okay, we got to pick at 9.30. We have to announce the number one pick. We get any of those quarterbacks in their prime. Who you taking? - Yeah, it's Caleb Williams. - No question. - There's no question about that. However, Cap, what I'm seeing from Caleb Williams, I've already saw on the college level. So I'm not surprised. I'm surprised at the early struggles, but what I'm seeing from him, and for those that did not see that, I'm just telling you what I saw as a college football fan. I saw a lot of this when he was a junior. A little bit when he's a senior, but definitely as a junior. So his ability to read defenses and run with the football and be able to get it down the field, it's not a surprise to me. What I'm saying is, is that it's a different level in the NFL. And as easy as it was with that offensive line he had a couple of years ago at USC, it's just different with the NFL. - Yeah, I just look at this kid, and not even the Bears could screw this guy up. Not even the Bears. - Yeah, well, now we have different management. You know I'm a huge Ryan Polls guy, and it looks like they have the right infrastructure, and they've surrounded him with great players. But not even the most screwed up franchise at quarterback in the history of the league could screw this one up. - Yeah. - For me, that's a Maserati that's parked out there, and every other guy that was here is a freaking you go. - Totally excited about it, but I'm not going to be in the roller coaster of vomit. He's the greatest we've ever seen. Boy, that guy sucks. Because anything else in life, there's stuff in the middle that we have to be able to consider. - Agreed, but I don't think you're ever going to say that. There will be days 'cause he's a human being where you're gonna go, "Ah, Caleb, it's terrible today." Yeah, that happens. - It does. - But guess what? There will never ever be a time that someone who looks at the Bears is gonna go, "Yeah, I don't know if they got the dude." They got the dude. He's a freaking Lamborghini, and we got him. - That's fair. - Finally. - That's fair. - Everybody else, they were Buicks. Never had a Lamborghini. - So Lamborghini better than the Maserati, correct? - I'd probably go Lamborghini first. I don't know the cost difference. I've never shopped for those cars. - Uh-huh. - But I'll look that up. - Because if you want speed, it's Lambo over Maserati. - Okay, 'cause Maserati was Mitch. I'd take a big man. And then 30 years later, he's all not only the greatest basketball player, he's the greatest athlete in our lifetime. And you out there said he couldn't play or you wouldn't take him. - Jordan? - There were people that did not want to draft a guard. - Well, yeah, it was a big man's sport then. Mark Eden was laughing, belly laughing at the Bulls. - Right. - I remember seeing that press is like, I don't know why they get this two guard. Like the two guard was like a dwarf in the league. - I mean, there's all these idiots out there that went, yeah, I would trade the pick. - Yeah. Yeah. - You'll have to live with yourself. - But the Fields fan feels good. The Fields fan feels like justified because the Steelers are winning. And I feel good about Justin as well because we're going to get that fourth round pick. Absolutely. - We'll see. I think they're going to Wilson. - They're not. No, Ben Rothersberger said no. Shay, did you see that? That clip on social media? So it would have ever been, says. - Ben coach and the team now? - Yes. - He's a GM. - Oh man, you should root for that. By the way, there's a marathoner that just crossed the finish line. - Proud of him. - I'm sticking with it. - Across the street, he still got the, like the number on, right past the Walgreens. - Only took him three days. - See this guy right here by the Walgreens? He just finished. Holy smokes. They took the barriers down, sir. It's over. - Took you 48 hours. - He's going past the Chicago theater now. He just finished. Hey man. Who's that me running the marathon? - Wow. - Tie me with a sundive. - That's tick-tooted in this, buddy. All right, Shay. - All right, the bears we've talked about have had a little bit of a lucky streak with the timing of playing their recent opponents. The Panthers were down a bunch of defensive players. Basically, all of their talented defensive players, when they came to Soldier Field, we talked about getting the jags at a focal point in their season where they might quit on their head coach and did they ever? Well, now you get the commanders after the bye week. And the luck streak continues because the commanders are fearing Jonathan Allen will miss the remainder of the season with a peck injury. That means a defense that already ranks among the worst in the league is now going to be missing its best player when they play the bears after the bye week. Shot or no shot, the bears are going to be Washington. - Well, it's absolutely a shot. - There's a shot for them to do that. - I'm telling you we are. It's a shot. Let me evaluate. Let's see what we all think as we get closer to the game, man. - Washington also with a buy coming into the Bears game 'cause they take on the Panthers on Sunday. - Why? - Better not lose to the Panthers. - Just saying, it's right there. I mean, he lose against the Ravens. That was an interesting test for Washington to take on the Ravens. - Where's the Panther game? - It's in Virginia. - Virginia. - So I believe that the Bears will beat Washington 'cause that's my hope. 'Cause I want the narrative changed. Like my narrative is one thing. Your narrative is one thing. But the idea that the Bears made a mistake through six games and that they should have Jane Daniels over Caleb Williams. - Yeah, that's it. - I hope the Bears beat their ass and then that'll be the end of that for a while. - Yeah, that's silly. That is absolutely silly. - Shay. - Well, if they do beat Washington, their next two opponents are Arizona and New England, two teams that I imagine the Bears would be favored over in both scenarios, even with the Arizona game being in the desert. - Shot or no shot. When the Bears host the Packers in a month, they're gonna be seven and two. - That's a no shot. - Yeah, I'm gonna say no shot. There's gonna be a loss somewhere. Whether that's Washington, they're gonna lose a game where you're like, how they lose that game? - Seven and two. Now let's think about it now. And we feel like the Bears could be Washington. In Phoenix, it's gonna be a Pearl Bears crowd. - Yup. - Like 75% Bears 'cause we, you probably have friends and I know I got family, it's going to Phoenix. To Glendale, to see the Bears beat the Cardinals, at least try to. But then it's the Patriots who are just putrid. Even Oma Drake may guide, they're just not ready for the infrastructure around Drake May. I think he can be something. I'll hold on to that, Shay, like out of the draft, I really like Drake May, but I don't think they're ready yet. So seven and two. - Like I feel like six and three is more realistic, but you know me, I'm gonna just get to want to know each game week. - So are you lost against the Cardinals? - I'm not saying that. I don't know. - Well, I mean, it's gotta be one of the three. - They can lose to Washington? - Good. What is it now? Are the commander's favorite, Shay? - Don't have a point spread on that yet. I was checking this morning. - Nothing yet. - Without Jonathan Allen and with how good this bears defenses, I do think there's a chance the Bears are short road favorites there. - I don't. Maybe when it closes, but I don't think the opening line though. - Yeah, it'd be surprised if it, but the opening line is gonna be what? Bears plus one and a half? - That sounds right. This match up predicted until you anything on ESPN. It's not accurate. It's got Washington 52% of the. - So that's a pick on basically. 'Cause the line in both at minus 110. - So I would say that there's, you know what, seven and two cap, there's a shot there when you think about it. But you gotta get past Washington first. - So this says that you can bet it on DraftKings right now? - I can. - The best odds available today for Chicago is on DraftKings, Chicago minus two. - What'd I say? - And Washington plus two and a half at Caesars is the best you'll find there. - I mean, it's what we talked about yesterday. The Bears for the last three weeks are top 10 in both offense and defense. And Washington great on offense, their defense is horrible. - I want some, my brother and I were talking about, I would like someone to tell me what they were looking at all weekend when the line moved from Bears two and a half over the Jags to the Bears getting one and a half. Like what were people looking at? I don't know. - I think it was probably the defensive injuries for the Bears and the fact that the Jags had been there done that and the Bears were going over to London with a rookie quarterback. - Would be my guess. - I did talk to a friend of mine who this is what he does for a living. And he said Evan Ingram was a big factor being back in the game. So the sharp money was coming in on Jacksonville. - And Ingram delivered. - So. - Ingram delivered. - It was great. - He did a fine game. - Excellent game. - Except he kept turning the ball over and shooting himself in the foot with penalties. They looked like the old Bears, Jacksonville. We kept hearing holding defense. - Number 28, five yard penalty automatic. First up, what? - That's good when the team helps you. - Yes. - If you're struggling offensively, or if you're sputtering, not struggling, but if you're sputtering a little bit, penalties will help. Just throw it up. You'll never know what happens. - Yeah. - So. All right, Shay, what else do we have, sir? - All right, the NFC North Landscape has seemingly changed with the Lions losing their best defensive player in Aidan Hutchinson likely for the season. I mean, be stunning. It becomes back at any point, he broke his leg. He accounted for half of their sacks and a third of their total pressures. You've basically lost 40% of your defensive productivity in one player for the rest of the season. It totally changes the look of their defense, which was already middle of the pack to bottom third. Now is probably just actively bad. Shot or no shot. The Vikings are now officially the team to beat in the NFC North. - That's no shot. - Still the Lions for me. - Yeah, I agree. I still don't think it's the Lions. - And by the way, you're looking for some football. I know that usually in this spot with a bi-week, you tell you're a significant other. Yes, whatever you'd like to do, hun. Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Home Depot, Apple Picking. - Bed, Bath, and Beyond's out of business. - How about a little Home Depot and maybe a container store? I don't know if we're going to have enough time, but maybe those two would be great in the hood household. Container store, you, perfect. You like the food prep, you could get your little containers. I think if you sign up for the text messages, you get the 30% off, I think it's perfect for you. Perfect. Maybe do it Saturday too. George is probably not playing. Take that, shake. - All right, let's Bath and Beyond is still online. What I was going to say, but again, how we do it around here, what I was going to say is, is that if you're looking for football in a non-bears Sunday, Vikings and Lions at noon is going to be great. 'Cause that will tell a great story about what you're asking about for a shot or no shot. That's what I was going to say. - Vikings, Lions, where's that game at? - Detroit. - Sin, Minneapolis. - Minnesota. Minnesota. That'll be an interesting ball game. It's got to be a better match up too. - Go ahead, Shay. Go ahead. - Vikings two and a half. - It's only the NFC North. It's only the question he asked about the Lions and what's happening with the Vikings, but there's must be a better game. - Is there a massive Chiefs game? - I don't know. I don't know. - Who did the Chiefs play? It's like a huge one. It's like the game. - Niners in San Francisco. - That's the game. - At 325. - That's the game. I'll take that one. But that's the game. That's the game. Go ahead, Shay. - Yeah, it's only the best division in football. Two best teams in the best division in football. - I get it. It's amazing. Go ahead. - Lonzo Ball will return to the floor tomorrow for the Chicago Bulls for the first time in nearly two full calendar years. Been reading about this all morning. A lot of people talking about the expectations for this team and how they can change with Lonzo Ball back. The last time we saw him, the Bulls were the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. So shot or no shot. The return of Lonzo Ball changes expectations for the Bulls. - Yes, from ninth to eighth place. Wow. (laughing) And by the way, three full years. Oh man. - 22 in the early three. - January 14, 2022. They were number one when he went down. - Bad math on my part. - I know, wasn't it December they were in the number one seed? - That's correct, sir. - And then a month later, he was done. He said three operations on his left knee, last played January 14, 2022. - I mean, how does that change expect? - You're the basketball wizard on the Bulls. You do the NBA stuff. - I don't see how it changes it. He hadn't played in almost three years. What are we expecting? - Cap, I'm with you, but I'm telling you, if you just read like Google, Lonzo Ball and go to the news tab. And there's a lot of this shifts expectations. This could change the look of the team. You have an explosive point guard back. I'm like, he's kind of reconstructed knee and hasn't played in three seasons. - You know, it's funny is that when you ask people nationally around the league about Lonzo Ball, they believe that he can recapture the magic that he had with New Orleans or with the Lakers. And that's like, and also the narrative has always been, the Bulls would be much better if Lonzo Ball would have been healthy the entire time. And I would just tell people like, no, that's not the case. Now, here's the thing about Lonzo Ball. It's gonna be interesting for Billy to be able to work Giddy and Ball, two long guards to initiate offense. - How do they differ? - I think that, see, I haven't seen Ball in a while. Which Ball was there? - Is it a shooter? Is it Ball? I think it's Ball. - It is Ball. It's Ball. And so, you have an opportunity. - I already ordered it. - There's a commercial right now. I'm gonna write down the time and see, 'cause you said it's not at the same time. - 816. - 816, the Bionic, it's called BionicFloodlight.com. Sales, get on them, 'cause we've talked about 'em enough. I bought 'em, 'cause Hoodie told me to buy 'em. Two days in a row, I wrote down the phone number, I ended up going online and buying 'em. - Crazy. - Crazy, man. So, then you, so I think that Josh Giddy is someone that could distribute the basketball well and make others better. - You can't. - I just wanna see what the dynamic is like with Levine without the ball in his hands. - I have to think he's a better rebounder than Alonzo Ball. I'm not the injured Alonzo, just Alonzo at his prime. - I have to look back at the old tapes cap, 'cause we haven't seen him in almost three years. And I don't know what ball we're getting here. - It's really insane, and if he does pull this off, it will speak to the miracle of modern medicine. - I just wanna see what it looks like. I wanna see what it's like when Levine is off the ball, the lion's share of the time and how that works. It's a catch and shooter, 'cause he likes the ball in his hands too, okay? - How nervous is he gonna be, or is he like, I'm playing on house money, I'm not nervous at all? - He's, Alonzo Ball? - Yeah, I think he's just cool with it. I think he's the guy that comes off the bench. I think they like Giddy first, but then you've got White and Levine off the ball. And ultimately, my whole, my whole Bulls world is a development of Patrick Williams. - Yes, agreed. - That's my whole world. That'll be for me taking the next step, 'cause he was really good last year. - Now, how much does White get the ball? Would Levine play off the ball? - Yeah, nice year, last year. Get out of the way, kid. - Wow, so sad. - We're gonna find out. - We'll see. - Is Alonzo, Alonzo Ball, or a Lucille Ball? The chocolate's in his chest. - That's it. - Off the disassembly line. - Whatever that, all over the face. (laughing) - We're gonna find out, Cap. And don't forget I/O to Sumu. So, you have talent. Is it top eight talent? Probably not. - No. - We got around the NFL. Don't be surprised if that is coming up next Alberborette 835, Captain Jay Hood, weekday morning, seven to 10. (upbeat music) - Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. - ESPN Chicago. - Hit both sucks. He sucks. - I'm just a fan. I'm not a football evaluator. - I love the Green Bay Packers. - The guy is front, but there we go. - This is not Detroit, man. This is the Super Bowl. - I love Winter. - He starts the comedy moment. - This is a really thickly built guy. - I mean, what's the answer you're looking for on these things here, huh? - Whoa, boy! - It's time to go around the NFL right here on Cap and Jay Hood. I'd like to remind you that our YouTube and Twitch video streaming is brought to you by... That'll be Verizon Fly Away Sweepstakes. Go to ESPNChicagoContest.com for entry and eligibility. - Hard for me to see over the top of the monitor. You're six, four, and I'm five, nine, and I'm like, walk around the side, go. Oh, there it is. Right here on WMVP WTBCHD2Chicago, the bottom here, the bottom of the screen. - That's it. - Around the NFL, here's Shay Norlin. Stop shaking your head. We're having fun here, so don't shake your head. Sorry, we're intervening in your time. Go ahead. Don't be surprised if... - Jared Goff becomes the legitimate MVP candidate after putting together arguably the best statistical two-game stint ever. Are you ready for this last two games from Jared Goff? 36 of 43 for 607 yards, five touchdowns, zero interceptions, averaging north of 14 yards per attempt, and he has more 30-plus yard passes than he has in completions while scoring 40-plus and back-to-back games. Now the Lions have lost their best defensive player, and if they overcome that with their high-flying offense, it'll be Jared Goff getting the credit-come award season. - That's real, Shay. That's real. I know that he doesn't sparkle and shine like these other quarterbacks. He's not on first take. There's no controversy around the Lions in that regard as like the team coming apart or just... Jared Goff's never talked about. He just performs, Cap. - He's a stud. He's really, really good. And I'm sure when the phone rang in his... Where did they say he lit Marina Del Rey? - Is Del Rey... Marina Del Rey home? - Yeah. This is Sean McVey. This is Les Sneed. We've traded you. Oh God, where am I going? Detroit. - What? - Wow. - You go for Marina Del Rey to Detroit? Good luck to you. And he's embraced it, and now he's their guy. So yeah, super cool. - I think that that's fair, Shay. Don't be surprised if what Jared Goff would not surprise me. He just performs. He got the game ball. Finally, Campbell remembered, "Hey, I'm going to write this down, guys." He gets the game ball. And he deserved it with a 47 to nine victory. I guess the Cowboys, as the Lions clown the Cowboys in the fourth quarter. Let's do hook and ladder plays now. Wow! - They're having fun. That play was super cool and well-run, man. - Shay. - Don't be surprised if the Texans clinched the AFC South well before Christmas. They already have a two-game lead in the division, looked far and away, like the best team in the South, which stinks. The Colts in second place at three and three without any real QB stability, and the Titans and Jags both drowning in the deep end of the pool. Texans are going to run away with this. - The Texans are going to run away? - He's right. - With the AFC South, yeah. - Probably. I mean, look, they got the best quarterback. That kid's a stud. He has not missed the beat, so I will concur with you. Do I think they're winning this Super Bowl? I don't. - No, he's telling you about the South. I mean, look at the South. It sits. - They lost Nico Collins on the IR list with a hamstring injury. That's no joke. Hoping we get Tyler Gordon back sooner rather than later from that. Texans are good. I don't think they're winning the Super Bowl. - Joe Flacco or Anthony Richardson? He had your choice this year. Flacco was able to lead them to victory against the Titans last Sunday. - What is the end game there? Are you trying to develop a guy who took fourth overall just a year ago? Or are you trying to be a middling team and win eight, nine ball games? That's the question. - Well, Shane, you're trying to get to the playoffs and you have your quarterback in place. It's supposed to be Richardson. - It has to be Richardson. - If you're asking, if you take a kid fourth overall and you're basically gonna redshirt him two straight years, you basically have to move on. - Yeah, well, last year he was hurt. - No, I get it, but it doesn't change the fact. Like the reason you don't play doesn't change the fact you're gonna get into your third year of development as a fourth overall pick and have not played, basically. How'd that go for Trey Lance? - Jay, is he healthy for next week? - I think so. - It sounded like he was very close to playing last week. I think he'll be healthy this week. - That would have set football back about a hundred years. We'll love us against Anthony Richardson. That's what would have been the matchup. It wasn't for Joe Blackhouse's horrible. - But you didn't take, we'll love us fourth overall. You took Anthony Richardson number four. - You're right. - I just, I'm the guy that just does not believe in and that and his ability. Just don't believe that he's gonna be the guy. You know, like Alex Brown thinks he was the best QB in the draft. - Maybe, but just not with the Colts. I think that's fair, just not with the Colts. Not right now. They're three and three though. - Oh, Anthony Richardson has been named the starter for Sunday, unless he has a setback, a physical setback. - All right, Jay, don't be surprised if-- - The two and four Bengals mess around and make the playoffs. Ready for their next three games? - Okay. - Act Cleveland, where they will face a quarterback who has been the worst in the entire league, despite playing exclusively against bad pass defenses. After Cleveland, their home against the Eagles, whose head coach just had to apologize for fighting with fans after an ugly win over Cleveland, and then their home against the Raiders, who are up Bleak Creek without a paddle. I think the Bengals get back to five and four, and I think they fight their way to the playoffs. - So, I wanna go back to something you said in there. Siriani had to apologize to the fan base for arguing with a fan. - Yeah. - Why? - I had no problem with what he did. If they said something that was so out of bounds that he was ticked off, - All they said was fight your mix. - My problem was him having his little kid on his knee during his press conference. - He behaved, and cap, he behaved like a loser. All they said was fire neck because the team is not good enough, and it's Philly, get his to it. - How dare you? - He behaved like a loser. What about when coach Dick has said, "That's your IQ, buddy, jerk, get your mouse shot." And he went, "Adam." And everyone went, "That's our guy." - What did coach Dick have that Nick Siriani doesn't have? - He won a Super ball. - There you go. - There you go. - And he coached and won it. - Yeah, Siriani had a team fully quit on him last year, somehow kept his job despite needing to replace all of his assistants, and the team this year is underperforming, and you're in Philadelphia. Get used to it. I watched Nick Castellanos get cheered by Philly's fans for not swinging at a slide or low and away, and then mouth while laughing these F and people during the NLDS. He gets it at least. He's not turning around and going FU after he hits a home run. - Yeah, I had no problem with Siriani Elden. He should not have apologized, and he should have gone to the podium. I'm not apologizing. - He definitely shouldn't have brought his kids up there like me chills. - That's what I said. That was a dusty move, and I couldn't stand when he did that, because he knew he was gonna get tough questions, and he had daring up their play with his little cars, right? - Yeah, I would still ask a tough question despite the kid being there. I gotta do my job. I don't care if you got that kid as a mutual or not. Do you feel like your job is in jeopardy? - Dusty, cute kid, is your job in jeopardy? Or if you're Jason Leisure? Dusty, have you been fired yet? - Yeah, pretty much, pretty much. I think that the reason why that he apologized guys is because ownership told him to. I do. - Okay, that's different. - I do. 'Cause I think that he felt he did the right thing by firing back at the Eagles fans. You can do that, fine. But I believe that's a PR thing. Like, hey, we're having a kind of a topsy-turvy season. We don't need you doing that. You don't need to do that. You don't need, you want to get energy, win games. You don't need energy by firing at the fans. - You got talent on that team, so. - Jake, can you squeeze in one more for Albert Breer? You want the Falcons or the Cowboys? - Cowboys. - Don't be surprised if the Cowboys, forget about a playoff window, finish with a losing record. This is not a Dak Prescott take. This is not even a Mike McCarthy take. This is a Dan Quinn take. Their defense without Dan Quinn isn't just bad. It sucks. Their 27th in defensive efficiency this year. Mike Parsons is hurt and not one player on that defense is playing as good or better than they were when Dan Quinn was there. I think that defense is in big trouble. - When is Mike expected back? - It was concussion, right? I would think this week or next week, he'd be back. - Like a buy and then at the 49ers. - Oh, let's buy this week. So we'll be back for their next game. - At the 49ers, at the Falcons against the Eagles. - So he play the next game or will he be a bear by them? - And that is our look around the NFL right here on cap and G. Can he play the offensive line? - Mike Parsons, they beat both. - Coming up, Albert Breer with the latest on the Bears and the NFL. Captain J. Hood weekday morning seven to 10.
