AP News, I'm Haya Pandwani. The House has easily passed a bill that could lead to a TikTok ban in the United States. AP correspondent Sager McGonney reports. The popular app is owned by Chinese tech firm ByteDance, which lawmakers say is beholden to the Beijing government. They worry China could demand access to the data of TikToks more than 150 million American users. Washington Republican Cathy McMurris Rogers says the bill requires ByteDance to sell TikTok if it wants to keep operating in the U.S. The choice is TikToks. But California Republican Tom McClintock says the choice should actually rest with American consumers. The answer to authoritarianism is not more authoritarianism. The bill's Senate prospects are unclear. President Biden has said he will sign the legislation if it passes.
