Drake Maye's First Start, Bruins
alright so i think we've hit the point of uh... sports overload because uh... you know baseball game going on at the moment yankies look like they're about to take a three nothing leading this series uh... you know we have football on hockey's on and uh... we've sort of hit the point where i can't really choose what the fuck i'm watching uh... i know i'm gonna need like two t_v_'s on or three t_v_'s on saturday 'cause we got the fights on saturday uh... honestly my guy rob font fighting uh... believe in the co-main event brewin's playing in utah around the same time and also around the same time uh... georgia is traveling to austin to face the texas longhorns so uh... we have we've hit that point of the year where it's just sports everywhere all up in your face uh... at all points in time and uh... it's glorious but uh... it is a little bit uh... anxiety ridden trying to keep up with everything but uh... let's start off with uh... talking about opposite was a big story over the weekend which was drake may uh... i didn't really get the chance to talk about this uh... at all really uh... just been busy but uh... so drake may uh... makes his first start it was pretty obvious that that was the direction that the organization was heading uh... i kind of a few weeks ago thought it would have been the miami game it seemed like that uh... he was penciled in to start that one but i don't think bersett had real the team had uh... hit rock bottom yet uh... i think that miami game really changed things and uh... they made the shift to drake may well that was the right decision or not will remain to be seen uh... it was definitely a bit of a panic decision uh... which i i think i actually did talk about this yeah i thought it was a panic decision uh... by it had to have come they had to have been some pressure from upstairs uh... if it wasn't just on the coaching staff uh... to get the kid in because you know if the team's gonna suck they might as well you know be entertaining while they suck and uh... in that in those terms uh... he definitely delivered um... you know uh... great couple great plays that he made uh... you know i would say his start was encouraging i wouldn't say we really learned anything uh... you know i'm not yeah i haven't been one of these people that's too high on it um... some people you know seem like they wanted to take stroke and be like oh my god look they found the guy you know they definitely found a kid with talent he'd has a lot of raw athletic ability uh... so like i said in terms of that it's encouraging but we already knew that about him you know we already knew we had a big arm um... where he knew he could run around a little bit uh... i guess the only thing we really learned is that it can he can do that against a you know legit nfl defense uh... it's just you know it's the other stuff it's the fundamental stuff obviously his footwork was one thing that a lot of people pointed out uh... i think the accuracy wasn't really that great i think that was kind of i think that's sort of my main concern um... is just the accuracy of some of those uh... you know medium throws across the middle of the field um... you know obviously stuff that he can work on it's his first art i'm not going to judge no one's going to judge him off his first art um but you know those are those are the sort of things you know the encouraging things with the big plays the ability to uh... go off script which i think is important in in today's nfl with how fast these defensive lineman are um... you know getting off script and getting flushed out of the pockets can happen frequently so the fact that he can make plays in his first game um getting flushed out of the pocket is pretty impressive it's something it's only going to get better so you know that that was an encouraging sign um i almost thought that he looked better when he you know the play was broken uh... then when it was a scripted you know throw it seems like when he was on those scripted throws he was sort of maybe forcing it or overthinking it um and more when he got the chance to get flushed out of the pocket and and make a decision on his own he seemed to uh... uh do pretty well with that so you know something to watch for um you know going forward obviously um and oh look we've got Boston College playing as well there are actually getting the shit kicked out of them um but you know obviously can't really judge him off one start and i can be able to judge him really even off the year if this is what he's going to be i mean he's going to if he's going to be just like this this year when you know we're really not going to learn too much about him but you know that team it didn't make a difference you know they still got smoked at the end of the day um and you know he's only going to be able to do so much so yeah he might be able to score some more touchdowns but he might throw some more interceptions and um you know you're still going to be finding yourself losing games uh by big margins because the rest of your team kind of sucks he's got you know the worst offensive line or one of the worst offensive lines in the league he may have the worst receiver group in the league uh he might have the worst play callers in league which you know will get into that too with you know Alex Van Pelt uh so if he's able to overcome all this and and they win games with him at the helm then maybe he really is just truly great because he's not getting a whole lot of help at the moment and uh you know going into the play callers i mean i i can't imagine why you would draw up a game plan where you know you're putting your rookie quarterback in his first start in a lot of third down situations where he's throwing it on third and seventh third and eight and it's like those are the passing situations you're presenting with um you know just the they were insisting on running the ball when it wasn't working uh pretty much the whole first half was run run third and seven run run third and eight and how you how is your rookie quarterback set up for success success that way um you know it's just Alex Van Pelt he's going to end up getting fired at some i mean this he's not going to last um so i look at him as a temporary problem but it's an organizational problem uh they haven't had good coaching in years uh from the assistant coaches and you know it just goes to you know how cheap the owners have been with not only the roster but the coaching staff and and you know you see it on sunday you see it when you know it's just a rookie offensive coordinator who's never played called plays before um is in a spot where he really shouldn't be and he was it's just it's not going to work out it's just not going to work out you can already see the writing on the wall for Alex Van Pelt uh i can't imagine he's here next year so that's that other than that you know like i said encouraging uh on Drake May's behalf the rest of the team good lord do they suck uh they're uh they're a long ways away from ever you know from being respectable first of all uh you know this offseason they got to really go out they got to spend money on you know a plethora of spots on that offense um you know defense doesn't look good defense is getting ripped apart um which was supposed to be the strength of the team they've had a lot of injuries obviously Christian bar mores out um with the blood clots and then he gets in the whole thing with the police which is completely unrelated um jwan bentley out for the season toward pectoral uh you know jibrell peppers obviously completely goes off the reservation uh doggars been in and out you know it's been a little tough training for that for that defense the only guy that's on that defense been consistent has been Christian Gonzalez and he did not have that good of a game uh on sunday so you know definitely uh something they they have a lot of work to do before you know we can really judge the quarterback and you know judge where the team is with him um let's just hope it's sooner rather than later because you know what are you gonna do you're gonna get to the point where three years from now you're gonna have to pick up that fit that fifth option on drake may and then what are you gonna do you're gonna pay him you're gonna pay him when he doesn't have any uh you know real backing they're not going to do that they're not going to they're not going to give drake may forty million dollars a year if he hasn't accomplished anything he's not going to accomplish anything unless he has talent around them so you know it we'll see i just that this team uh is yeah they're just they're frustrating they really are they really are tom brady was covering up for a lot while he was here uh and then uh obviously i just wanted to get to also uh the bruins um they started their season i did that night went on a rant they had that embarrassing game against florida to start the year corrected it uh they had uh two games at home against Montreal and um la they win both of those um Montreal they gave up a lot of goals in that one as well they gave up four goals they had ten goals allowed to the first two games and then uh they cleaned it up defensively uh on saturday even though they really didn't play that creative game against the kings they ended up pulling it out in overtime uh two to one and then uh last night they were in Colorado which i'm going to chalk that up is a pretty good win uh oh oh i forgot they they played florida on monday afternoon and um that was again another embarrassing showing uh you know florida doesn't have uh sasha barkoff or matthew kachok on their roster at the moment um kachok was or not in their roster but playing for them uh kachok out with uh illness this week uh and uh sasha barkoff had a weird play last week where he uh was chasing tim studsla on the auto senators from behind and he sort of slid into the boards uh on an empty it was on an empty net chance he kind of looked like he tried to make like a sliding tackle like a like a soccer tackle and uh to try to get the puck in he just went straight into the boards it didn't really look like he hit that hard but uh it was enough to take him out for two to three weeks and at the NHL we don't really know what the issue is so uh they just say lower body injury but so he's out of the lineup and doesn't matter doesn't matter for the uh florida panthers they still come in here and uh embarrass you uh for the most part um you know just the insinuating on uh you know fighting at all points in time um you know the trying to fight the uh florida panthers when they clearly are you know schooling you on the ice it's just you look ridiculous um you look so stupid and you're out there trying to you know start crap that they're clearly not going to engage in and um you know that's something that they're going to have to get over during at some point this year uh and into the postseason is just the panthers are just making them their bitch or they're just going to hope that got a hope and pray that someone knocks them off before uh they have to end up facing the Bruins so the florida stuff obviously not encouraging for the postseason um what is with this with this team they're not a team that has been successful or built for the postseason in recent years but we'll see how that changes um if they get a good win last night against Colorado obviously bouncing back after kind of getting pantsed on monday uh Colorado is desperate Colorado has been terrible um Colorado is 0 and 4 no one really had them being 0 and 4 at the start of the year for sure um you know anytime any rush that's got mckinnon in my car on it you're going to assume that uh that team's going to be near the top of the standings but they look like a mess uh that team looks like a train wreck and the Bruins completely dominated the play they really should not have been as close to game as it was um if you were watching but you know Colorado got some power play goals there um you know what are you going to do when they have that much top end talent on their power play but man the rest of that team they look like a disjoint old mess and the goaltender looks terrible that uh the coach there he's definitely going to get bleed canned at some point um but yeah no good win last night they're getting a lot of production uh out of that fourth line i don't know how sustainable that is but uh johnnie beacher who had a good year last year and what was really his first real uh you know real year uh has come in the second year and looked really good um and he sort of changed his game a little but he's going to the net more um i like i like that aspect of his game he's playing with um mark cast lick who they at center who they just got um from autowa in the uh o mark trade and uh he's been uh hell of an acquisition to start off the air he's got a nice shot he scored a couple of really nice goals um and he's really that that whole line is just sticking their nose nose in there and then the third guy on that line is col co co pechie who really came out of nowhere i think he's only played 27 games before uh this one in the nhl and uh he's just sort of come out of nowhere and um you know he's already got two goals on the season for them i don't know how sustainable it is i saw that they're leading the nhl in uh goals per 60 minute for any line in the nhl so i don't know how uh sustainable a line with uh johnnie beacher mark castelik and col co pechie is gonna lead the nhl in goal scoring but you know we'll see i they're not getting much out of uh any anywhere else um you know that that second line has been a bit of a disaster and they sat morgan geeky last night um marshaun coil geeky hasn't really gotten anything out of them geek coil scores a goal last night i think it was on the power play if i'm not mistaken coil finally gets on the board he's been in nothing um marshaun really has been kind of invisible for the most part starts a season which that's not really a good sign i mean he's also in a contract year so you know you got to wonder where they go from here because he is not look good uh he looks a little cashed i would say um geeky never should be in your top six um he's sort of there by circumstance but um he's been completely useless i would say he's been completely invisible i've never i haven't even noticed him um and i honestly didn't even notice he was scratched last night until i looked at the stat box in the at the end of the first period now i noticed his name wasn't there and i was like oh well you know that makes sense you know other than other than that you know they're really not getting much production out of you know that second line um they're getting production at a posh knock even though i haven't really loved his game per se really made until last night he made a really nice play that ended up setting up his own goal um but he has been scoring um alias lint home has been a good acquisition so far um but other than that you know they've definitely the defense has not been as advertised you know obviously they do not have as good a goal tending this year as they did last year just naturally when you eliminate corpus hollow or eliminate all mark and replace them with yonis corpus hollow um but you know he was able to he bounced back from that first game against um uh florida last night he finally got back in the net and uh he gave him a he gave him a decent game uh you know he maybe had a goal there at the net third period that he probably could have stopped but uh you know from your for your backup goalie he played a pretty clean game you mean it was all power play goals that they ended up getting scored on so you know we'll see where it goes from here but uh you know obviously i don't think that i've i said at the start of the year i said don't think that they're going to be as good of a regular season team um as they've been in the past few years just because of the lack of continuity um on the roster they got a lot of new guys um that they're trying to get into the mix and uh you know whenever that happens you're going to have some growing pains but hopefully um that all ends before the playoffs so that's all i had for tonight uh thank you guys for listening
