And this week we are bringing you the rivalry of the Jets versus the Patriots. Both teams play in the AFC East and the played in the same division since the interception in 1960. The American Football League and the played twice a year ever since then. Now the games between these are often compared to the fierce rivalry between the Yankees and the Red Sox due to the geographical rivalry between New York and Boston. And we'll start this off in the AFL years in 1960 to 1969 where the New York Jets, they're known as the New York Titans and the New England Patriots, they're known as the Boston Patriots. First met in September 1960 where the Titans hosted the Patriots at the Polo Ground and Al Dotto of the Titans erupted three touchdowns and Titans led 24/7 in the third quarter. Sorry. But then they put Soggin and 109 Russian yards from the Patriots runners closed the gap to 24/21 in the fourth quarter and Chuck Shonta finished off the Titans when Punder Rick Sapienza fumbled a snap to take a 28 for the 24 lead. He recovered the fumble from the Punder and ran it in from 25 yard line for touchdown but the Titans just argued that the Patriots linebacker Jack Rudolph kicked the ball which then was illegal but the chase for the ball play stood and the result was 28/24 Patriots win in the first game. So there you go, first game was already a bit of drama. So despite losing the first game the Titans Jets then posted a 12/7 and won record during the AFL years. The tie occurred in October 1966 and see only tie in the history of this rivalry. The Patriots led 24/7 after three quarters but two Jordan Namiff touchdowns and Jimmy Turnifield goal tied the game. It was also a bit of last time that the Patriots did not lose to the Jets until 1971. Later that season the Jets knocked the Patriots out of the playoff race as Jordan Namiff's floor for three touchdowns and led the Jets to a 38/28 win despite the Patriots quarterback Vito Parelli throwing for 379 yards and the Jets continued the dominance once joining the NFL for the 70s. Really only posted in a 12 and 8 record during that decade where the early dominance between 1970 and 1975 got on 10 and 2 but the Patriots went 6 and 2 between 1976 and 1979 and one of the games in 1976 which was the turning point in the Patriots get started to get the wins over. The Jets was the Patriots hosted the Jets on Monday night football in October 1976 which was unofficially renamed Monday night madness when a load of drunken fans led to mass arrests by local police who were actually coven the fans to to fences. There was that many arrests that they had to cover a load of fans to the fences while the waited for the fans to come back and take them away and then cover a load of more fans to the fences but you know all this all the carry-on didn't didn't affect the Patriots runners because Andy Johnson Don Cologne and Sam Cunningham a long-witted quarterback Steve Grongan combined for 330 Russian yards in that game with five touchdowns including a fumble recovery by Grongan in the second quarter Grongan also completed a short touchdown pass to Johnson so then four guys racked up a 41-7 Patriots win. In October 1978 the Patriots dominated the Jets to get to a 48-7 third quarter lead ultimately winning the game 55-21. After the game the Jets coach Walt Michaels felt that the Patriots were disaffirming his coaching staff signals and suspected the arrival to him had told these courts to the Patriots. Michaels explained afterwards that this will never happen again to us and I know what they did but by the time we figured it out it was too late. Now later that season the playoffs now is erased at 23-0 to beat the Patriots at 26-23 and there was also a speculation that the Jets had told the Oilers coach about the Patriots defensive courts. Shenanigans, Shenanigans going on in 1979 against the Jets got by Patriots quarterback Gorgon set a record for five touchdown passes in a 56-3 Patriots win. His touchdown record stood until a certain Tom Brady broke it in 2007. Now in the eighties the Patriots partially got some more wins over the Jets posted a 19-15 record between 1980 and 1996 and during this time there was highs and lows for both teams the Patriots appeared in Super Bowl 20 and Super Bowl 31. The Jets had had five playoff appearances in the eighties and early nineties but had fell to the bottom of the league by mid-90s. 1984 Patriots head coach Ron Mayer fired assistant coach Rod Rust but he didn't have the euphoria to do so so he was actually fired himself and the Patriots got in Raymond Berry who was assistants to Chuck Fairbanks. He was hired for his first game was against the Jets and the Jets you know bolted off to a 10-0 lead and then led 20 to 6 by the half but the Patriots run-of-back Craig James fought back for 24 unanswered points by Tom Franklin. The Patriots won the game 30 to 20 and Collins said that Raymond Berry had earned the respect of the locker room in one game. Now the first playoff meeting between these two clubs came in December 1985 where the Patriots traveled to the Giant Stadium. The Jets took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter but the Patriots scored 23 points in a 26-14 win. The Patriots would go to the Super Bowl that year but fall short to the Chicago Bears and in 1994 the Jets hosted the Patriots both teams were on a free and free and the Jets court Pete Carroll was in his first year and the Patriots court Bill Parcels was in his second year. The Patriots lost the turn over battle losing three fumbles one interception on route to a 24-17 Jets win. So in 1997 Bill Parcels the Patriots had caught his contract was due to expire after his appearance in Super Bowl 31 and there was rumours going round before that that Parcels wanted to move because he wanted to go somewhere where he had more more say in the personal decisions and that all really came about because Parcels wanted to draft a defender with the 7th overall pick but you know the Patriots director Bobby Greer wanted a wide receiver Teddy Glenn instead which was the drafted. So after the Super Bowl Parcels resigned as the Patriots had caught and crafted the Patriots on a belief that the Jets had been you know approaching Parcels in attempt to for him to sign for the Jets they can take coach position. Now the Patriots had a clause in there that if Parcels was to go and be a head coach they would you know the team that it would be the head coach for would give their first round pick to the Patriots so the Jets decided they're not wanting to do that so to get round that they hired Bill Belichick as their head coach and had Parcels work as his number two. Now Kraft wasn't happy about this and there he caused a bit of a stink and you know claiming that the Jets intentions was for Parcels to be the head coach you know not Bill Belichick and they'd got the NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabil think I've just murdered that. To arrange an agreement between two sides where the Patriots would receive a third and fourth round pick in the 1997 draft second round pick in the 1998 draft and the first round pick in the 1999 drafting compensation for allowing Parcels to become the Jets head coach. With parcels living for the Jets of Patriots I had 49ers defensive coordinator Pete Carroll who was mentioned before was the jet-head coach in 1994 yeah a lot of shenanigans going on and we haven't even got to all the fan fights. Now in 1998 Patriots running back out it's Martin's rookie rookie of the year 1995 rookie of the year became a restricted free agent and the Patriots placed the highest possible tender Martin that would ensure first round and third round draft picks compensation if they did not match the contract offered by another team. Now the Jets offered Martin a six year 36 million pound contracts and the Patriots low salary cap they opted not to match it and take the draft picks as compensation. Now this Jets offer was the first example under the NFL's current free agency system of the poison pill. It included a clause that would have allowed Martin could come back as an unrestricted free agent the following season if the Patriots match the offer allowing him to leave New England without the Patriots receive in any compensation. The deal included a 3.3 million roster bonus that would have counted against the Patriots salary cap in free-agent contracts before the process was outlawed in 2011. In 1999 the end of the season parcels resigned as head coach making his second retirement of NFL coaching. Bill Belichick was the assistant court of the Jets he became the Jets next head coach the following day at the press conference for his hiring. Bell Jack wrote a resignation note on a napkin and just lifted it up and it says I resign as head coach from New York City Jets well I resign as H.C. of the NYJ and he proceeded to insist announce his resignation in front of the press despite rumours who have been offered the Patriots vacant head court position. Bell Jack cited the Jets uncertain ownership situation of the death of the owner Leo has earlier that year was the reason for his resignation. The Jets denied Bell Jack permission to speak with any other team and as of what happened in 1997 with parcels and Bell Jack the NFL revealed Bell Jack's contractual obligations to the Jets and Bell Jack then had to file a lawsuit against the NFL in the federal court and the Patriots and Jets agreed to a compensation package to allow Bell Jack to become the Patriots head coach with a deal that the Patriots sent their first round pick in the 2000 NFL draft fourth round and seventh round pick in the 2001 draft to the Jets who also received the Jets fifth round selection in 2001 and the seventh round pick in the 2002 draft. All these shenanigans it's like you know with the Packers and Bears that were putting horse shit in each other's in changing rooms and with the Cowboys they're nicking fight songs and running around just as chickens and you know these just seemed to want to take each other to guard up shenanigans everywhere. Well in September 2001 the Patriots quarterback drew a Bledstor was injured after a hit from more Lewis and Bledstor was then replaced by their backup quarterback Tom Brady but that was not enough to overcome a 10-3 Jets win. So you know you got these two teams that absolutely hate each other. The swapping managers had all sorts of like shenanigans going on you know taking each other to court every bloody couple years and then to make matters worse for Jets you know more Lewis takes out the quarterback which then sort of gives birth to the greatest quarterback in NFL history because after that 10-3 Jets defeat Patriots surged forward and when the teams met again in December the both teams were in playoff contention and the Jets opened 13-3 halftime lead but was shot down but it touched down from Antoine Smith and Mark Edwards on route to a 17-16 win. The Patriots didn't lose for the rest of that season and went on to win Super Ball 36. The Jets finished that season 10-6 losing in the wildcard round of the playoffs. The following year the Jets defeated the Patriots 30-17 in a key week 16 contest that moved both teams to 8-7. One game behind the AFC East leaders Miami Dolphins in week 17 the Patriots defeated the Dolphins and the Jets defeated the Packers and the Jets would actually end up winning the division on a tiebreaker over the Patriots and the Dolphins and the Patriots would miss out on the playoffs that year. In 2004 the Patriots gave the Jets the first loss of the season they were 5-0 for the plate the Patriots both teams made the playoffs that year. Patriots went on to win Super Bowl their third title in four seasons. In 2006 the Jets hired former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini as a new ed coach and during week 2-2006 season Mangini referred to Belichick as a friend in the press conference while Belichick refused to use Mangini's name with the media. Earlier in the week the Patriots traded a holdout wide receiver Dion Branch to Seattle Seahawks and filed a tamper in charge against the Jets allegedly engaging in contract talks with Branch Wiley was still a member of the Patriots. The Jets were later cleared of the charges by the NFL and the Patriots went on to defeat the Jets in New York but in November the Jets had handed the Patriots a loss in in New England. The teams both met in the playoffs later on that year and the Patriots ran away with a 37-16 win over the Jets and following the game Bill Belichick pushed photographer out of the way to go and give his good old mate Mangini obviously remembered that he knew where we was now in week one in 2007 season the Patriots won 38-14 and gives which was highlighted the first touchdown catches from new Patriots receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker and also there's a 108 yard Elise Hobbs kick-off return for a touchdown sent an NFL record for the longest ever kick-off return. After the game Bill Belichick was accused by the Jets for authorizing his staff to film the Jets defensive signals from an on-field location so Jets filed a complaint to the league office detail in the acquisitions and two days later Bill Belichick issued a statement to apologize to everyone that has been affected. He also stated that he had spoken to the NFL Commissioner Rod Godell about this interpretation of the rule and in September Bill Belichick was personally fined half a million dollars and the team was fined a quarter of a million dollars additionally the Patriots were required to forfeit the first round pick in the 2008 draft. Acquisitions of the Jets also illegally videotaping the Patriots in the January 2007 playoff match arose following the incidents of Jets general manager Mike Tanabam called the acquisitions completely false in September 2007. In the weeks before the teams December 2007 game Newsday reported that the Jets were found videotaping from a mezzanay level in the Gillette stadium and were asked to leave by Patriots security. Jets later claimed that they'd been granted permission by the Patriots to film the game while Bill Belichick denied permission had ever been given. In September 2009 the first matchup between Bill Belichick and the Jets new head coach Rex Ryan. In the week prior to the game Ryan had placed a phone message to all Jets seasoned ticket holders asking them to make it miserable for Tom Brady and company. Following up on his comments during the off-season that he would not kiss Bill Belichick's Super Bowl rings he told the Jets fans that the Patriots had the better head coach and the better quarterback but the game would decide who had the better team. My Jets safety Kerry Rhodes said that the Jets intended on not just winning but embarrassing the Patriots that game. What I know is tackle Chris Jenkins called it the Jets version of the Super Bowl. As the Jets had not defeated the Patriots at home since 2000 in the end the Jets ended up defeating the Patriots 16-9 and it was a 100th overall meeting of this rivalry series. Now in November 2012 these teams met on Thanksgiving for the first time and the Patriots won by 49-19 and the Patriots forced five turnovers. The most bizarre of which was known as the but fumble in which quarterback Sanchez ran into the backside of linesman Brandon Miller dislodging the ball and it was recovered by Steve Gregory running back for a 32-yard touchdown. This was during the sequence of when the Patriots scored three touchdowns in 52 seconds and the Patriots tied the NFL record for the most points in a single quarter five and that was Bill Belichick's 200th win of his NFL career head coach career. Now nearly 10 years later in an interview Sanchez quoted that he he ran into some guys but dropped the ball on the turf and some guys scored and it was on his favourite holiday which wasn't cool. Now since that game the Patriots have won 19 of the last 21 contests against the Jets during a decade long stretch from 2010 to 2019 so New England won 17 out of 21 games against the Jets during that period. Brady went 29 and 7 against the Jets during these two decades as a Patriots quarterback. Now that football didn't just like haunt Sanchez. Really the Jets caught Rex Ryan. He doesn't forgot about it. He described it as one of being part of the most embarrassing stretch and the most embarrassing quarter of his coaching career. He was quoted saying about it at the time he never realised it was going to go down as the worst play in NFL history and as soon as it was coined the but fumble that that was when he knew that the player was going to live on and on. In December 2018 the Patriots achieved their 500 regular season victory defeating the Jets 38-3 making the Patriots the first team in AFL franchise to achieve this milestone. In the second game in the 2019 season the Patriots beat the Jets 33-0 and Jets quarterback Sam Donald was caught on the mic saying I'm thinking I'm seeing ghosts as he in a sponsorship through to an interception but in that game he also threw for four interceptions and only 86 passing yards so well done Vikings for secure and Sam Donald for at least one year. In 2020 Brady left the Patriots as a free agent joined Tampa Bay and Brady posted as I said before a 29 and 7 record against the Jets. So after Brady left both teams really struggled and in 2021 the Patriots beat the Jets 54-13 and that was the first time Jets had allowed more than 50 points in a game since 1995 then in week 18 of the 2013 season as in the season just gone the Jets defeated the Patriots 17-3 which was the first time the Jets have beat the Patriots since week 16 in 2015 more significantly they won what turned out to be the last ever match of Bill Belichick's Patriots head coach in Korea he left about four to five days after that. So when you look at the head-to-head record through the decades you know the Jets got the better of the Patriots in the 60s and 70s when the 12 and 7 won tie in the 60s and the 12 and 8 in the 70s in the 80s the Patriots got the better of the Jets with 12 and 8 90s the Jets got the better of the Patriots 11 and 9 but then it's just been complete dominance from the Patriots after that with 14 7 in the 2017 and 4 in the 2010s and in 2020 it was only four years of it with 7 and 1 records which gives an overall of 74 to the Patriots 55 to the Jets and only the one tie the largest victory for the Patriots came at 56 to 3 and the largest victory for the Jets came at 47 sorry 45 to 7 longest win streak for the Jets was 9 between 1966 and 1970 the longest win streak for the Patriots is 15 between 2016 to the last game most recently 2023 leaving the Jets on a won win streak. I mean there's like yeah it's it's a straight drive it's whether there's a lot of chopping and swapping about going on you get you know with parcels Carol Bellcheck and Mangini all acting as coaching on both both teams between 1993 and 2008 there's been at least 50 players that have played for both teams in that same period and it wasn't just the teams and players that were you know taking each other to court and fan Jets fan Kyle Meyer took legal action against the Patriots and he wanted millions of dollars from the Patriots and Bellcheck claiming that they had deceived customers by secretly taping Jets coaches in game signals and his lawsuit claim fans spent large sums to say the game and they were essentially rigged. They suit allegedly that the Patriots had tipped the Jets signals in their twice yearly contest for several year for seven years and saw triple triple damages for Jets fans based on the rough average of 100 pounds a ticket. Meyer tried to get 185 million pounds in damages just for the Jets fans alone. High court obviously refused to revive it so yeah got away with that. Now we get to the ugly side I mean if you just type in anywhere Jets vs Jets and Patriots fans fans clashing or fans violence all sorts of videos comes up I mean first one furthest back I could find was one where there was a stabbing in the car park in the 60s I think it was really hard to find it was like a clip out of the New York New York Times or something one of the New York newspapers. But in 2015 after a game there was video circulating of a Jets fan pretty much curb stomping a Patriots fan in the car park parking lot and probably most partied on you know there's the one in 2013 where Jets had gone over time victory 30 to 27 and there's like a 38 year old dude who punched punched a woman, partly his claim and he was defending his mother but yeah it's not all doom and gloom out there the videos you know there's also a really funny video of a Jets fan yelling at Zach Wilson and his teeth fall out as that is that is shouting that mad that his teeth actually fall out of his mouth so yeah just want to go and look any up finish on that and I think that's been it for the Jets vs Patriots there's a lot more that you can add into this we can go on forever with this one seems to be very very strange very strange rivalry whether it seems like suing each other get one over on each other that's trading between and see what we can do I've been said next week I will be bringing a different type of episode where I won't be going to team vs team rivalry I will be bringing the team my top 10 quarterback rivalry is of all time it is Ryan here and I have a question for you what do you do when you win like are you a fist-pumper a woohoo a hand clap or a high-fiver I kind of like high-fiver but if you want to hone in on those winning moves check out Chumba Casino at Chumba Casino dot com choose from hundreds of social casino style games for your chance to redeem serious cash prizes there are new game releases weekly plus free daily bonuses so don't wait start having the most fun ever at Chumba casino dot com no purchases are equally avoided by loss in terms of conditions 18 plus Fargo the new virtual assistant from Wells Fargo makes banking faster and easier like this Fargo what's my checking account routing number and this Fargo turn off my debit card and this Fargo what did I spend on groceries last month and that's just the beginning do you Fargo you can in the Wells Fargo mobile app learn more at Wells Fargo dot com slash get Fargo terms and conditions apply your mobile carriers availability and message and data rates may apply Wells Fargo bank and a member FDIC
