what is going on guys guys this morning I discovered the concept of the mind heart I've had the most amazing morning reading three incredible authors and we're going to combine them into the discussion of your mind heart so for this episode we're going to discuss those three authors we're going to explain to you what your mind heart is and we're going to give you a takeaway so that you can let your mind heart come into full focus and blossom into the person you destined to become I know I'm a little gauzy right now but I just read these three amazing authors and their work seamlessly flowed together for me today so I thought I would share it with you and I hope you find it as fascinating as I did this concept of your mind heart why that's so important and what you can do once you kind of look at the world through the mind heart to who are these three authors these three authors are Tic Natan from the heart of Buddhist teaching Raymond young goal and his amazing daily devotional book living God's way the October 19th message for living God's way and then the work of James clear from atomic habits his book he's like the habits Buddha and he is so good when read all three of these authors this morning and they all pointed into the direction of your mind heart and your ability to tie your actions to to further who you were destined to become mind is just blown today and I hope I can convey it in such a way that you get what I just experience so first off let's discuss what I mean by the concept of the mind heart I was reading the work of Tic Natan in his book the part of Buddhist teaching and he was discussing the concept of right mindfulness I've done some podcasts in the past on before normal truths of Buddhism for noble truths are life is suffering be aware of what the source of your suffering is and then see stewing those things that make you suffer but after you kind of address those three things of course this is a constant daily process that you do they also offer this noble eight point pass where eightfold path where you can do these things in the right way these principles and kind of realize the best version of you well one concept is this concept of right mindfulness and a page 64 of the heart of Buddhist teaching tick explains what right mindfulness actually is and he said the word for mindfulness means to remember mindfulness is remembering to come back to the present moment and then he discusses and here we'll get into the concept of the mind heart and he explains why the character of the Chinese used for mindfulness of course I can't share with you the character because you're listening to this has two parts the upper part means now the lower part means line or heart and then he says the first miracle of mindfulness is to be present and able to touch deeply the blue sky the flower the smile of the child he says mind or heart well I'm thinking of the line heart because these two things are connected notice what he says there it means now in the upper part of the character of the Chinese character the lower part means mind or heart I think that's very fascinating because it's mine or heart but basically as I understand that the same symbol means both mind and heart as far as I can tell that Chinese character does not distinguish between the two it can mean either one or one and the same thing that which connects yourself your heart to your mind the essence of who you actually are is your mind blowing blown is your mind blown my mind was blown by that because it's also connecting your mind heart to now and here he elaborates on the essence of mind of mindfulness is giving attention to what your heart or your mind is observing right now to the clouds to the leaves to your desk to your desires to your mind heart the essence of your mind and the deepest part of your heart is who you actually are what you actually want to become what your actual purpose is the way that a lot of times people become miserable is they don't listen to their mind heart their mind is too cluttered they're too busy they don't take time to stop and listen to what their mind heart says in terms of what they need to do because your mind heart is it wasn't really attuned to your skill set and your greater in terms of who you were destined to become one of my favorite Proverbs is called Proverbs 1312 and I think I learned about it through the work of the Christian psychologist Dr. Henry Cloud and it's something along the lines of a desire unfulfilled makes the heart sick a longing realized is the tree of life well of that that's probably my favorite Bible verse Proverbs 1312 because if your heart isn't if you don't listen to your mind heart that which actually you desire that you want that you know you're good at and you don't do it you become sick on the other hand if you do listen to that and you fulfill your longing and dive into that you bring the tree of life you bring total abundance I am now reading the work of David Halberstam the education of a coach about the story of Bill Belichick unfortunately David Halberstam died in a car accident about 10 years ago but he wrote a book about Bill Gelent Belichick after Bill had won his first three Super Bowls and he talked about this Bernie Adams character who's kind of this eccentric intellectual who loves to study film and his sole job is to study film and talk to Bill Belichick because he's Bill Belichick's best friend from Andover what really struck me about Ernie Adams is described in the book by David Halberstam is that from a young age all he liked to do what his mind heart was telling to do is that he loved football Ernie Adams he loved watching Tate and he loved sharing these kernels of insight that he got from that tape to Bill Belichick Bill Belichick's Bill loved the same things from a young age these guys knew they were obsessed with football what I'm kind of jealous of with these guys these people that are at the top of their game is these are the people that listened to their mind heart at a young age the thing that they actually wanted the thing they actually believed and they dove into it so many of us ignore our mind heart we ignore what our mind and our heart are telling us to do because we know that that is what we actually believe that is what rings true for us if we don't listen to our mind heart we would be absolutely sick we would fail to adhere to the principles of Proverbs 1312 a desire unfulfilled makes the heart sick along he realizes the tree of life or something like that is what it said I just think that is so good to nourish that desire that's healthy that's good for you that you want for and then Tic talks about this being the miracle what are the miracles that happen when you listen and you pay attention to the mind heart now here Tic writes in this book the heart of Buddhist teaching at page 65 the third miracle of mindfulness is to nourish the object of your attention at the person that you love who are you my girl who are my heart who are you my darling don't be satisfied the superficial answer who are you was taken my suffering is your suffering my happiness is your happiness my life is your life and my life is your death my love why aren't you a do drop a butterfly a bird ask and be present with your whole intention if you do not give attention to the person or thing that you love it's a kind of jelly oh my god when you are in the car together you are lost in your thoughts assuming you already know everything about this person if you're not knowing with mindfulness and pain attention this object that you love whether it's a person or desire or an activity will wilt it will be it will die like a wilting flower when he says you need to be a present and say I know you work here beside me and make me very happy with attention you will be able to discover many new and wonderful things her joys her talents her deepest inspirations if you did not practice attention how can you say that you love this person what I love about this is he's not only talking about the person that you love but the activity that you love if you have these things that you know you're good at I think we all have a particular superpower that we know we're good at that we know we have talent at if you don't dive into that you will be sick you know I think about my own life the time that I was most miserable it was I was not stopping to listen and think about what I'm actually good at I wasn't nourishing my deepest desire in terms of what I'm good at and when that happens you create a type of abundance that is not only good for you but those around you because when you're not sick you're producing and the I think we're all just being wired not only to do what we do well but to do what we do well in a way that serves other people Bill Belichick and Ernie Adams love football in the process of being obsessed and feeling their desire to realize their truest intention which was to be really good football coaches they created amazing amounts of prosperity for the owner of the New England Patriots they created tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars for the players to play under them like Tom Brady they created pride for the region they created pleasure for all the people around them by fulfilling their desire can you imagine what would have happened if Bill Belichick would have become white and accountant and some people love accounting I don't particularly love it but it's an important task but where he ended up in a career that he didn't like he would have been absolutely miserable and I know he kind of is a grumpy pants anyway but you can tell he really loves what he doing and how do you know that he'd practically coach for free that's how much he loves football he listened from a very young age his line heart and it's funny that I read this particular passage today because I'm going to connect it to the word to the work of Ruben Youngdahl which is a daily Christian devotional that mom had had us reading occasionally as a young adult and even growing up and I always changed that up there's so many good things and in the passage today there was a really good passage about what belief means and so when he was trying to describe what it means to actually believe in something he talked about this experience of the Christians in Africa and they had so much difficulty explaining some of their concepts so a lot of times they had to talk to they had to talk to various people how to say how do we actually translate belief how do we actually translate base in so what you leave how do we translate the holy Trinity into in the Swahili and in a way in which they will truly understand and this passage comes out of 2 Corinthians chapter 8 verse 11 where it says this so that your readiness and desire and it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have absolutely loved that what it what it says is what is your mind heart really good at doing your mind heart is good at knowing what you're actually good at what you actually desire and usually what you're good at is matched to and the linked to what you desire why don't we do this so often because we're not listening to our mind heart but check this out so that this missionary was having this conversation with this native in Africa and they were talking about gosh how do we translate this gospel of John to talk about what it means to believe the native convert had thought for a while then he had it he said hmm took a while to think about it and then he said doesn't it mean to hear something belief means to hear something in your heart and that's what Ruben was like that's such a good way to describe belief what do you actually hear in your heart in such a way that your mind your inner most mind actually believes it to be true what is you know and I thought about as a lawyer when I'm trying to talk to a jury what I'm trying to talk to a judge what do I really want to do I want to communicate to the inner line heart of that juror I want to communicate to the inner mind heart of that judge such that they themselves are internally persuaded in the quiet of their own thoughts who that I am right but I'm not trying to trick them I'm not trying to convince them at anything I'm trying to show them what the truth is the truth of the substance of the thing just that when they go back to chambers their mind heart is convinced isn't that the best way to to talk about what the word believe means when you're trying to persuade someone what you're trying to get them to do is to listen to hear their something in their heart such that their beliefs can change their beliefs in terms of who they actually are can change and I think oftentimes when we think about what we're trying to communicate to someone else we're only listening to our mind heart when not listening to the mind heart of someone else we're not giving a tension to someone else's mind heart we're only paying attention to our mind heart and we only pay attention to line our mind heart we're not necessarily gonna persuade them we're not gonna content and connect with them because we're not paying attention to the other to the other object of what we want to do so it's a kind of a two-edged sword here we need to pay attention not only to our own mind heart but to the mind heart of those we love and also to these things that we're trying to achieve to pay attention to it are you tracking me isn't this so good I love this I never thought I'd be able to connect the work of tick not hun and ribbon young doll but the takeaway I'm gonna try to give to you is through the work of James Clear who I just I just basically decided that he's one of these guys I'm gonna read and reread and reread over it again his book atomic habits because he basically has distilled all of these timeless truths in terms of being the best version of ourselves that he hasn't come across the concept of the line art I think he should I think he won't rock be cold and talk about the importance of the line art but what he does the which is really central in his work atomic habits how small changes lead to remarkable results is he talks about so often people fail with their goals because they don't actually change what they're at Danny so it's much easier to say that you're not gonna have a cigarette if you're not a smoker right if you're someone who occasionally smokes well then fine and that's just a question of Willflower but no I'm not an identity I'm not a I'm not a smoker well then it gets into what isn't identity what what does it mean to have an identity as a smoker or a non-smoker it is the actions the actions are repeatedly what make us us I've talked with you before about the concept of what the actual concept of identity is clear says every action is a vote for the person that you were gonna become but then he dives even deeper he talks about see if your mind is below this what the Latin origin of the word identity is in Latin and then he comes up with a word that I absolutely love he said the word identity in English derives from two Latin terms as sentitas which means being an identity del which means repeatedly so what he says is identity means repeated being this does that make sense to you identity means repeated being this and so what he said it is is that if you really want to change who you are you need to think about who you are and what I think if he does a chapter in here how do you figure out what you want in the first place you need to listen to your need to stop you need tranquility and you need to listen to your mind art that deepest part of your soul that animates everything else that you do you need to listen to your mind art once you decide who you want to become what you're actually good at you need to then take small steps need to repeatedly be the person that you were destined to become through small repeatable actions that everyone can take one of the things that I've really tried to do is to go on daily walks well what is the identity of someone who is a walker well a walker is walks I'm someone who loves to go into ice so I prioritize setting that time to reinforce that identity to make it second nature I've decided I want to be a good son to my mother so am I and end of my father so I make sure that we allot the time that we need to to spend time I want to be a good spouse to my partner when sure that I'm allocating that time and so each time we take we sit and listen to our mind art we can then take these little steps that will reinforce what our mind art knows to be true the word for mindfulness in the Buddhist tradition means to remember the word is maretti smaretti I have no idea what I'll say that right but that means to remember to get back to the present moment and so what I want all of you to do today is I want you to pay attention to remember to bring your attention to right now and to listen to your mind heart your mind heart knows what you want and if you listen to your mind heart you will become the person right now the steps of character means now above and mind or heart I call it the mind art you will achieve great things and so I'm just going to conclude with Proverbs 1312 look it up write it down put it on your wall in longing the film make unshur filled makes the heart sipped in longing realize is the tree of lights listen to your mind heart and put what you've learned into practice that's it for this
