AP News. I'm Ben Thomas. Texas' immigration enforcement law remains on hold. Herman Hall has the latest. The Supreme Court has extended for now a block on a Texas law that would give police broad powers to arrest migrants suspected of illegally entering the US. An order signed by Justice Samuel Alito indefinitely prevents Texas from enforcing a sweeping state immigration enforcement law that had been set to take effect this month. The language of the order strongly suggests the court will take additional action. The Justice Department has argued the law would step on the federal government's immigration powers. Opponents have called the law the most dramatic attempt by a state to police immigration, since an Arizona law more than a decade ago, portions of which were struck down by the Supreme Court. In two hours of arguments today, the Supreme Court seemed likely to sign with the Biden administration in a dispute with Republican led states over how far the federal government can go to combat controversial social media posts on topics including COVID-19 and election security. Justice Amy Coney Barrett expressed surprise when Louisiana's solicitor general Benjamin Agwin-Yaga questioned whether the FBI could call Facebook and ex to encourage them to take down posts that maliciously released someone's personal information without permission.
