The term was coined by Fiona Broome, a paranormal researcher, in 2010, after she discovered that many people shared her belief that Nelson Mandela had died in prison in the 1980s, despite the fact that he was actually released from prison in 1990 and went on to become the President of South Africa.

The Mandela Effect is often attributed to a phenomenon called "false memory," which occurs when people remember events or details that never actually happened. This can happen due to a variety of factors, including suggestion, misinformation, and cognitive biases.
