Texas Pro Day: Scouts Galore as Longhorns Perform Well

I'm Joe Cook joined by Justin Wells Justin Wednesday March 20th was Texas pro timing day in addition to the 11 Longhorns that went to the combine Jetbush and Ryan sandborn also participated. There was some big news some big storylines and a lot of NFL Personnel and attendance. I know our friend Matt Miller said almost a hundred were there. I think 31 maybe even all 32 teams were there And that kind of says something about what's going on at Texas because that's Something that has not always been a constant having that many NFL teams three different head coaches, including Mike McDaniel Shane Steichen and Zach Taylor All in Austin Big. I mean that just says a lot about the talent and says a lot about well how the NFL is probably going to perceive The Longhorns in the coming weeks at the NFL draft Absolutely. I mean just think about it since you and I have been doing this for for almost a decade or for me longer I can't remember that many guys anywhere close to that. I remember the days where a lot of teams didn't send a person He got into that point, which should never should at a place like Texas, but Sark is his ride at that ship I think after the the senior bowl and you saw some really good flashes from some some of the guys from debondry sweat From from christian jones from ryan watts and then to the carries over to the the combine and indian apples were Obviously texas was the was the big show there with exebia worthy and a handful of other guys buyer and murphy Um, those days are over joe. I think we can now start expecting more And and and the beauty of it is you were there and it wasn't just guys that could get drafted in 2024 You were able to actually take a little in the nfl teams notably We're actually able to take a look at peek around the corner at what could happen in 2025 notably that quarterback position Yeah, let's talk about that Right now. Um, obviously with ad mitchell and exebia worthy Moving up draft boards both them thought to be first round type talents 80 mitchell cop passes at at the combine went through all the drills Stood on his 40 time at the texas pro day But who looked good catching passes as did exebia worthy You know, he just went through I think the 40 and said all right i'm done taking off my cleats went home He he joked today. He's like, you know what? I didn't want to break it even further When he was talking about his 40 but at at texas today He did start going through wide receiver drills look good doing it And i'm part of the reason that he did look good doing it was quin uers. Um, I was standing by a few different scouts Like I said, I think 31 nfl teams were there I think the only one I might not have seen was the cardinals, but it may have been all 32 And they were talking about like man. Did you see that pass at bama? Yeah, this is kind of what that looks like Yeah, just you know, just needs to put on some weight. So quin Uh was obviously a little bit of a reason why a lot of those scouts were there get some early reps in front of some nfl scouts and Uh, let the nfl scouts front office people even a handful ahead coaches and some offensive coordinators Know what they were might be looking at next year, but hey him looking good help not just ad mitchell Not just exebia worthy, but also uh jordan wittington out because ad mitchell, you know separation Is a good route runner has at four three speed Xavier worthy got to show off some some route running Uh, but even jordan wittington looked good Uh, just because um quin uers was able to hit a lot of those guys in stride with accurate throws and jordan wittington finally had his Opportunity to perform in front of scouts Uh perform in front of you know, just with his teammates and it looks like he definitely made the most of it Uh, thanks to you know his own ability, but quin uers helping him look good as well A lot of fans are curious about jordan wittington if if you were to ask that's probably the guy most fans want to know about Now early on I thought that he didn't go through the the testing part correct He he did not at uh the combine and I think even at the senior bowl Uh, because he was working through a little bit of a hamstring injury. Um, he actually mentioned today Uh that there may end up being another workout and I don't think it's that big 12 one because the big 12 or least Participants for that and there was not a single texas player on there I think a little bit later in april Uh, there's going to be another chance for him to really test in front of scouts But today he was able to go through the wide receiver drills talk to teams Um and jordan wittington so happy go lucky that uh, you could tell he was focused but that he was having a real good Time doing it as well another a couple other interesting notes that I picked up was You know keelan robinson did a lot of different work. Uh caught passes out of the back field Uh tested really well at bench. I think he posted 20 bench paris reps Um and that's in addition he's to a solid four four Time that he posted at the combine Uh didn't didn't didn't run again. Um, the only two guys who ran were jaylin forward and Uh who ran the 40 were jaylin forward and jet bush and we'll get to them in a second Uh, but I thought keelan posted some good measurables Caught some passes a guy who struggled a day Uh jotavian sanders did not have a very good bench press showing nor did he really have a good Um, you know, I think vertical and broad jump He's gonna I think he's the type of guy who's gonna say hey rely on my film rely on what I did show you in the past catching drills Those did look solid. Uh looked like the jt. We are very familiar with Uh, but as far as Some of the measurables could have had a better day a lot better day Um, but on the defensive side of the ball, you know, we we talk a lot about the first rounders on offense There are obviously first rounders on defense and uh jay Excuse me, uh, bire and murphy to vondry sweat went through some of the the position drills. I think bire and murphy posted a really good Um, uh, uh, three cone drill, but the guy I thought had a really great day was jaylin forward Um, and he was someone who you know, you remember he did not get to go through the combine I think he posted his bench press or his broad jump and then Had to work on something and he even said he was like 85 to 90 percent today Uh, but he ran. I think he ran a good time Uh did all the drills met with teams and he said he did position drills for the first time since football practice back when he was working Uh to help the long horn try to win the sugar bowl and he looked natural doing it and so I thought jaylin forward was someone who made the Most of his day today as well in addition to guys like and you know, we talked about all 13 of the guys there Thiring murphy to vondry sweat. They did their thing. Uh, ryan watts looked really good. I thought Uh, but I thought jaylin forward in an opportunity in a moment where he needed to take advantage He did and uh probably set himself up well for his future You know from the couch There was one other guy that looked like he had a a really good day. Maybe a little bit unexpected That was jet bush. He looked like he was at every time you were posting Measurements and details jet bush was at the top And and I think mike and daniel even teased him a little bit about how he should be ready to to play for the dolphins You know, you you said forward made the most of his opportunity Did jet bush get in the conversation of being draftable because we know he'll be an undrafted He could be picked up in free agency after that seventh round. What was your impressions of jet bush today? I thought that there are ways to use these pro pro days To your full advantage and I think jet bush did that didn't go to the combine. Remember was a walk-on out of out of a straight Jesuit Turn down scholarship offers to go to texas turn down scholarship offers to go to texas And was asked to do so many different things at texas between off ball line backer Uh jack defensive in and then a little bit more of a sam or specialty pass rusher Um, he did a little bit of everything at texas. He did a little bit of everything today Uh, he went through off ball line backer drills Uh, he went through drills as like a full-back, uh, which he did a little bit of I believe I remember what he was used to be number 52 And he changed to 43 because he needed a eligible receiver number. So he did some full-back drills He even did a little bit of a tight end sort of drills and uh, you know Turkish top stuff right the the thing with with with, um, with bush Is he gonna get drafted? Probably not Does he put himself in the conversation for an undrafted free agent a guy who's willing to play special teams a guy? He's willing to do multiple things to be on a roster. Yeah, absolutely But even if that opportunity is not available I think there was something that I mentioned when I wrote this up on inside texas earlier this morning or previewed it That there are multiple opportunities for football. Look at texas's head coach Steve sarkisian played in the in the canadian football league Uh, well, remember jackson jeff coach just enjoyed a great career Uh north of the border. There's also a new league in the in the united football league You know the combination of the xfl in the usfl Um, and I don't know if he's up for it, but hey, I and I didn't see if they were here in austin But wwe sends people to uh football pro days as just athletic scouting So the opportunity for football is definitely out there and that's one of the reasons jet bush went through today's to Show maybe to one of the united football league teams or even a canadian football league team I'm not sure if any of those were there but work gets spread around the scouting communities there Uh, they definitely are talking probably compare numbers and if jet bush really wants to play football This is the type of thing that he needed to do and do well Uh to give himself an opportunity and I thought that happened Uh, one other guy We definitely need to talk about who I think made a good impression is christian jones Um, someone who if you think about six years ago And his nfl Projection, it was tough to see it was a long way away ended up being six years down the road He was going to be on the offensive line Yeah, I remember because out of side woods Uh, he was thought maybe he could be a a defensive lineman Um, he comes out today after a solid nfl combine, uh, and has another solid pro day Uh, he goes through drills talks to a lot of teams and he's someone you can tell is just so thankful Uh to have had the opportunity Just to play at texas to help texas get back and he even mentioned one time I think he was in that 2021 season. He thought you know football made he thought football might not have been for him Uh, but he kept at it. He credited kevin washington. He credited Obviously kyle flood and now he talked about how confident he is and you know He's the type of player that I think could really end up finding his way into the draft and but maybe at a different position Maybe at offensive guard, but uh, he was one of the testaments to development that that texas was able to put in front of Scouts, uh today at the in the bubble, you know, with christian jones dude. Don't forget his first sport was soccer And so sometimes that that that tends to translate we saw it with the kimalaju on and the usan rockets We saw playing soccer can translate and christian jones was doing the same thing You you brought up a good point and i'm just gonna put this on a t and and let you just destroy this If the wwe showed up today if they were in the bubble Who is one guy out of that group that you could say? You know what if football doesn't work out? You should try the room. You should try wrestle mania. I know you've got somebody give it to me. I mean I would Any defensive guy Because there are there there are types I mean A lot of the the stuff that happens in wrestling is those guys are still strong. They're still taking bumps But they have to they have to look good for the camera and they have to make sure that they're Uh, you know able to take those hits, but they you know, there's also the the big wrestler factor Think about tavondre sweat walk into the ring. Uh, think about think about buyer and murphy Pressing someone like the ultimate warrior. Um jett bush I think we've seen some some clips of him showing a little crazy man attributes with like the smelling salts Uh, but even jailin ford the other thing is those guys you have to be good on the mic and all those guys I think are great on the mic as well. Um, not sure if if that's going to be there calling Obviously football is definitely going to be the calling for tavondre sweat buyer and murphy even jailin ford And I think jet bush in some form or fashion But I always think that's pretty interesting that that they're able to do that one last topic Like we what like we talked about earlier. Hey there are 13 guys going through this pro day and You know, jonathan brooks is a unique case obviously, but 11 could get drafted 10 could get drafted Um all 13 have a good shot of ending up on a roster once everything's said and done And every player really talked about that with the ones that talked to the media And just were like we've looked around and like there's been 20 nfl teams here before Not 96 scouts or anything like that. They looked around today. So almost 30 teams And they they spoke about leaving texas in a little bit better place Uh a lot better place and today things like today being evidence of it Also, you know, something I noticed You know, we've covered these before where former players come and current players come It seemed like there was a large number of current players or guys that are about to get drafted, you know Things of that sort it just seems like there's a lot more buddy buddy here There's a lot more pulling for each other maybe that culture that sark talks about All the time is real and legit. I mean, I know we we know it is but I think that's another example today Just guys in there supporting each other jonathan brooks being in there. No one he can't do drills You know, you were inside there, you know, how big is that camaraderie? How big is that pulling for the next guy and also seeing some of those old heads Come their back way through and try to you know, see some of the some of the newer crop You know used to though the older players without number the the current players now is way opposite and it was It was uh older, you know nfl vets without outnumber the the younger current players Way opposite there is even a moment where I saw blake giddy and I think kind of teaching derrick Williams something about why they run through that drill Uh through pro days and what to emphasize with it. So uh spoke a lot to it. You saw all different positions Uh, saw, you know safeties line backers defensive lineman, uh, the only quarterback he saw was quan But I bet that's because you know smart move by arch if that's the case. I would say Uh just to avoid that that media Circus and even nfl circus, but wide out for their oh lineman or their assistant coaches were there It was a a good showing by by everybody all around in support of their teammates And if you find some of the clips you'll hear them cheering in the background Um big on the bench big on on the the three cone and definitely a big part of why the the culture seems to be Succeeding in austin and succeeding on a path in the sec That's all for this video.
