(upbeat music) - Hello and welcome to the Accountability Coach podcast where we discuss proven business success principles related to helping you make more money and work less so you can enjoy having your ideal business and your ideal life. This is Anne Bakrak. Today we have a special guest with us who I know you will find to be a wealth of information related to helping you have a blueprint for success so you can accelerate the achievement of your goals. Terry L. Today he's going to tell us how to apply that technique to help us be even more successful personally and professionally. Welcome Terry, we really appreciate you joining us. - Anne, thanks so much for having me. I know that the information you give out on your podcast is so helpful to so many people so I'm really honored to be part of that. - Well, as you know then, I like to like get this party started right away and get right into the meat of things. So let's talk about, let's talk about why is it that most people who set goals actually fail at reaching them? What's behind all that? - Well, for one thing, most of what we've been taught about goal setting is either incomplete or completely wrong. It's amazing, some of the stuff that's out there on number one best selling books that we all know about from stages around the world, et cetera, et cetera. A lot of people are repeating things that have actually been debunked and yet the story still go on or maybe are helpful but aren't enough. And the bottom line is reaching a goal for most people is about getting out of your comfort zone. 'Cause otherwise, you do other things instead of the things that take you towards your goal, the things that are comfortable like, well, I had to do this or this came up or this got in the way, if you've ever said I didn't have time to do it, yeah, you did. You just did things that were more comfortable. So it's all about getting out of that dreaded comfort zone every single day. - Wow, that is really powerful because I mean, I always tell my clients, successful people are comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's how they got to be successful and you can learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable as well. - In fact, even taking that a step further because you're a thousand percent correct, we crave being uncomfortable and when we expand that comfort zone, now that becomes comfortable. So now we're gonna push that even further. So what used to be wildly uncomfortable for us becomes comfortable, but only by getting out there and pushing out of it. - So let's talk a little bit about then, how do we do that? We've got these things that we want to accomplish. Yeah, it's uncomfortable getting there. How do we get out of that feeling of holding ourselves back so we can actually reach then our next level of success? - Absolutely, and before we go to that, let's talk about some of the things that we're being taught and some of us are teaching me included that aren't correct. So then we can go into, okay, why doesn't that work and what does? First of all, we've all heard right down your goals and that's good, it is. We've heard of the Harvard goal study. Many of us have, I used to teach about the Harvard goal study. Part of that was 100% of the people who wrote down their goals achieved them 100%. Which would be great, but it's not true. The Harvard study that's been in best-selling books, still talked about stages around the world, never happened, Harvard's confirmed it. Right into your goals is important, but that's not gonna do it by itself. Next, positive visualization, critical, absolutely critical, but not enough. And for everybody that's saying just visualize it and the universe will make it happen for you, I'm sorry, that's just not true, okay? It makes you feel good, it makes you comfortable, but that doesn't get the job done. The fascinating thing, there's the story in my book about how I came to this by failing and failing and failing, but when I started succeeding because I, without understanding, was applying the ox cart technique, and then succeeding and helping others succeed and succeed, succeed, which was just crazy for me, I started researching because I wanna put this in a book. So I started researching to prove my theory wrong, 'cause true scientific research is not trying to prove your theory correct, it's trying to prove it incorrect. And as I was doing that, Ann, I started coming across this information on something called prospect theory. And I'm reading on, at least the words that I could understand, and as I'm doing it, my mouth is dropping, my mouth is sitting here wide open at my computer. I'm like, oh my God, I might be on this, and I went up, I told my wife, I think I'm on to something here. 'Cause prospect theory developed by Connor Mann at Tversky in 1979 taught us beyond a shadow of a doubt that we will do more to avoid pain than to go toward pleasure. Let me say that again, we'll do more to avoid pain than to go toward pleasure. So no matter how much positive visualization we do, how much happy thoughts and dream boards and manifestations and everything else we do, it's not enough to get us out of our comfort zone. And that's why 92% of the people who set a goal fail because most of what we're being taught is either incorrect or just completely wrong when they applied prospect theory to economics, they won the Nobel Prize. So I applied, it's a goal setting. And again, before I even knew what I was doing, I started applying it because I started letting my failure propel me, if that makes sense, does that make sense? - Yeah, absolutely. - And let me tell everybody what happened. Let me tell you the story behind this, 'cause I think it's important. I was raised in literally the poorest city in the entire United States of America. A small Texas, Mexico, border town by the name of Mick Allen. Everybody's heard of it, if you watch the news at all, it's where the border crossings are happening, the cartels coming across, killing people, a home. And don't get me wrong, I love my hometown, I really do. But it could be a little rough growing up there sometime with all the gangs and the drugs. In fact, I was on the wrong end of an assault rifle in junior high. In my own back alley, when I was in high school, my father, my dad was killed. Before he died, one of the neighbors came up to him, said, "I just wanna make sure you understand something." The three boys here, here's three sons, not a single one of them's gonna ever grow up to be anything. So that's where I come from, that's my background. And I tried, and I tried, I got into business, just like most of the people that are listening into this podcast right now on this radio show, I got into business. And guess what, I was terrible, I was horrible, I failed miserably at it, I was no good at all. And I learned all the self-improvement that I possibly could, all the goal setting and the manifestation and everything else that I possibly could, and I failed. And I tried, and I failed, and I failed, and I failed. And I got to the point where I just, well I couldn't fail anymore, and I gave up. And I walked into my bathroom, I looked at myself in the mirror, said, "Because he's right, "you're never gonna grow up to be anything." And, wait a minute, no, wait a minute, no. I refuse to let that son of a gun be right, if for the sake of the memory of my dad, if nothing else, I refuse to let him be right. And something happened, something clicked. I got ticked to say the truth. Now I got up and I brushed myself off, and I got back at it again. Now, I still faced the same challenges and setbacks and disappointments and knows and everything else that everybody else is facing as well, all the ones that I had faced before, but now I did it from a different standpoint. Not just the carrot of the carrot and the stick, some positive visualization that I never believed would happen to a guy like me. And now I had something pushing me, creating more pain than the pain of getting out of my comfort zone. Never grow up to be anything. And when I'd run across those disappointments, that's what I went back to. Now, I wanna have a big house someday. No, didn't care, wouldn't gonna happen anyway, but I'm not gonna let that son of a gun be right. And I pushed through. When I put that into a technique, the three-page technique, that's all it was, where I put down my failure scenario on a piece of paper, and then I put down my daily tasks, what I needed to do to accomplish, and then my success scenario. Here's what success looks like for me, not what somebody else says it should. Here's what it looks like for me. I started succeeding, and my entire life changed forever. And I'll go just a bit further than turn it back to you. So did a lot of other lives, because people started coming up to me and go, Terry, what are you doing? And so I taught them. Before long, I had rooms full of people coming to listen to me, me, and y'all know where I come from. And it started working for them. We started applying it to marriage, 'cause marriage is a goal that 50% fail at. And I started getting these emails. You just saved my marriage. There's this international weight loss coach in one of my audience, so she freaked out, started using it. And then I decided to put it into a book, and that's where the research came out. I wanted to prove myself wrong. And when I found out I could apply this to goal setting, and it would work, and that's what I was doing and set it into a system, became the number one best-selling book on Wall Street Journal. The subject is my number two TED Talk in the world. I called The Biggest Advancement in the Science of Goal Setting in Recent History by Forest Mims III, one of the 50 best praise in science, and on and on and on. So that's the backstory to all this. It's just, from a lot of failure, and a lot of sticking with it, like everybody else listening in right now, to coming up with something that's really helped a lot of people. - Well, let's talk about exactly what that is, Terry. - You got it. Let me give some examples first of all. It'll make it a little bit easier, hopefully, for somebody. Again, carrot and the stick. That's where the ox cart technique comes from. I came up with a parable that's explained in the book that talks about how the ox will go toward the carrot as long as he's hungry, but when he's not hungry, it doesn't work at all. That's where you tapped at the stick in the butt. He doesn't like that, so that pushes him forward. Okay, let's talk reality here. You know my success scenario, my ox cart for business, okay? Yeah, I didn't want to be poor. I didn't want to ever grow up to be anything. That's what propelled me. Let's talk about just some fun examples for marriage. So I would never cheat on my life. My wife, my action plan includes, I'll never cheat on my wife. Pretty good point on my action plan. Why? My success scenario is, well, because I love her, because I want to spend the rest of my life with her because she's amazing. So that will probably work, you know? But what if I'm, you know, some, I don't know, just came off stage and we're at the after party and everybody drinking and, you know, they're going, look crazy. What's going to keep me from being stupid? The fact that my failure scenario, my wife's an attorney. She could take me for everything I've got. So which one would work at that time? Depends on the situation. But that gives you an idea of the two, the two things. So here's the bottom line, guys. We all focus on our why. We've all heard that a million times. Why? Why we want to succeed. The ox cart technique also incorporates why we have to succeed. Why? To coin gene grants, failure is not an option. And that, according to prospect theory and reality, would propel you more times than the carrot ever will. So next point that's very critical and ask everybody, please write this down if you're able to do so. Emotion, not fact is the driver of all action. Emotion, not fact is the driver of all action. We know what we're supposed to do. You know how to build your business. You know the daily steps you're supposed to take. So to the people, if you have employees, they know what they're supposed to do. You taught them, right? The problem is sticking to that, right? We're really excited to begin with. We're really going to do it this time. But over time, the passion fades and we find ourselves with life creeping in. And I didn't have time to get to it because when the truth is we had time, we wanted to do things more comfortable. So you write out your action plan. This is the bridge, the bridge between failure and success. That determines which one of those will be your reality. Next, understanding emotions, driver of all action. You can write out your failure scenario. Now, a lot of people are uncomfortable with this, especially today. Oh, you can't think negative thoughts. No, no, no, you think happy thoughts in the university, the universe will go to work and make it happen for you. If you think happy thoughts, bad things will happen, not true, y'all, you can harness it. You can absolutely harness it to propel you if you do it right. And that's why I important for everybody. I understand we're at the 50,000 foot level here. Read the book, okay? The book's got the details and that's critical. What happens if you don't succeed? Let's put the emotion into it, not just my business will fail. No, no, no, no, no, what does that mean? What does that mean to your spouse, to your family? You should almost cry when you're writing this and reading it. When I'm doing this as seminar helping businesses go to the next level, helping companies go to the next level, a lot of times my audience, many of them will be in tears at this point. In fact, when I did the audiobook, I couldn't continue with my marriage failure scenario without shutting off the tape several times. And that's good emotion, not facts of the driver of all action. You're gonna read that like I did. And you're gonna go, there's no way in the world I'm gonna let that happen. I will do anything to make sure it doesn't happen. What is anything? The next step, your action plan. You'll stick to it after you read that out loud as well. Then you read your success scenario with emotion. What is, what happens when you do succeed? What does your life really look like? Not just beaches of the world. Man, that's somebody else's dream. Maybe not yours. What does it really mean? What does it mean with your spouse, with your kids? What does life look like for real, deep stuff? Not surface stuff, not garbage, real stuff? By the time you read that, you should be feeling amazing. Problem solution format, start with a problem. Just like any good movie. Gets you like, oh my God, everybody's gonna die. Unless the hero takes the right actions, your action plan and saves the world. Except for this time, you're the hero. And this is real life. Does that help explain it in? - It does. I talk about a lot of times, and I think this is what you're saying. I'm probably just saying it may be a little differently and correct me if I'm wrong. I talk a lot about when people are doing something, it's like, okay, well, what's the worst thing that could possibly happen to you? And then what's the best thing that could actually happen to you? - 100%. - But you're really going into more detail around that. - You are so dead on, and you are so dead on. And that's a place most people don't wanna go these days. Only the successful people do. And that's exactly what we're doing here. We're writing out three pieces of paper. We're writing it down. There's a quote you put at the bottom of each one that's really important, it's in the book. So you're going there, you're reading it every morning to set you up for the day, to kick you in the butt to do what you need to do for the day. And then you read it at the end of the day to go, okay, how did I do? Honestly, how did I do? Sometimes when I'm doing my personal coaching with people they say, well, today was a little more of a left day, but tomorrow towards that failure scenario, tomorrow will be more of a right day. It's like, all right, we got this, let's talk to you tomorrow. And that's okay too. This helps keep you on a course correction all the way through it. So yeah, and 100% on, this just puts some very specifics to it, a specific technique to exactly what you just said. - I mean, and I like the fact that it's really, you know, you're talking about really detailing it. So really being very specific as to, you know, what's the worst thing that could possibly happen in every regard, you know, what it looks like, how it feels, who it impacts. - Yes. - And, you know, and then what's the best thing that could happen, how it feels, who it impacts, all these things I think are super critical in the way you're describing that to get the outcomes that we're looking for, right? - Your emotion is what will drive it. You take the example, we've all heard of a mom whose child is trapped underneath the car. Facts are, she can't lift that car. Sorry, it's a couple of tons or whatever it is. It ain't gonna happen. Fact has no basis in emotion. The emotional part says, she's gonna get that kid out from underneath that car. Why? Because of the happy thoughts, hey, afterwards we're gonna do lunch. No, because of the stick, the failure scenario, if I don't, my child will die. Recently the news, a man had his son being attacked by a bear. He ain't gonna do anything about it. That bear will take him and 12 other people. Facts don't matter. He killed that bear with a piece of firewood. Again, emotion drives action. - Wow, yeah, really, really powerful. And I have to admit, for so many years, I couldn't understand, as a coach, why people weren't more motivated by a positive outcome, why did I always have to have them sign a sheet that said, okay, if you don't do this, this is what's gonna happen. And I'd say, what's the thing that you really don't wanna have to do? I mean, absolutely hate to do. And they'd have to sign it. I have one person say, actually, they didn't wanna donate any money to the homeless, for example, or it could be to a certain political campaign. They said, once I donate to that campaign, I'm sorry, I'm gonna start getting all kinds of things from that campaign. And that my wife is gonna be mad at me. And she's gonna maybe divorce me because I donated to that campaign. I mean, he went on and on and on. And I said, okay, well, that's what your motivator is, right there. - Yeah, yeah, well, and now you understand why from the scientific standpoint, from prospect theory, we'll do more to avoid pain than to go toward pleasure. We associate pain with our comfort zone. So yeah, that's why we need to associate more pain with our actions, to kick us out of that comfort zone, to push us out of that comfort zone. Not just why we want to reach our goals, but why we have to reach our goals. Huge difference right there. - We all need that kick. That's why we all need an accountability coach, right? - Amen, amen, even with this system, I absolutely recommend having an accountability coach without question. - Now, I'm just curious, and this is maybe a slightly off track, but I'm not really sure here. So how did the Oxcart technique help you win the reality survival show? I'm sorry, Mike, going a little bit off track here, but I'm really curious on that. - No, it absolutely did without question. Okay, so let's look at my failure and success scenarios for that, okay? Success scenario, I'm gonna win a quarter million dollars. Okay, now that's cool, and I'm about to say something, and I hope I don't sound terrible, y'all, and if I do, I'll just apologize ahead of time. I'm pretty blessed, I've worked really hard, and I'm pretty blessed financially. Quarter million bucks is cool, it is, don't get me wrong. But it's not gonna make that much of a difference in my life. So that isn't that cool, it wouldn't be enough. Now, let me tell you what I have to do to get ready for, in fact, let me back up a second on that. I didn't ask to be on a survival reality show, they reached out to me, and I found out I was gonna be the oldest contestant on the entire show. My wife's laughing at me, she's like, "Oh my God, you're the dog, dog, what's that? "You're the token old guy, dude." Oh, great, thanks. So it's like, great, they got the old guy on there, but he's gonna die. Next, I found out who my competitors were. Special forces guys, a Marine Scout sniper, a mercenary who helped take out Saddam Hussein. Now, what was my role? Get this guys, Scoutmaster. They wanted me to wear my Scoutmaster uniform on this show. So all these guys in the fat old Scoutmaster. So, my failure scenario was the impact, because if I screw up, if I do poorly against these people, then it's gonna make all of Boy Scouts of America look bad. This is an organization that I believed helped save my life, and it saved a lot of other lives too. It means the world to me. I'm still extremely involved with this, and I would make everybody's gonna be judging Boy Scouts by my actions. So, how effective was it? I'm the fat old guy. Now, I've done some adventures in different parts of the world. I actually flew in to the Amazon jungle to learn survival techniques and came out with over a hundred ticks on me. I went down to a local gym and went to the trainer and went, okay, you've got a few weeks, short weeks, to get this old body in the shape. Can you do it? He basically looked me up and down, can you? So, that was the challenge that I had to face. Quarter million dollars would not have done it for me. Sorry, I wouldn't have done those things for it, but my failure scenario, maybe do my action plan, which led to a success scenario that I never dreamed would happen. That was the kick in the butt that you really needed. That was the kick in the butt all the way through the show. When I'm starving, I lost 25 pounds. I'm sleep deprived. We each had a partner, a novice, so he's never even camped out their backyard before that we had to get through it as well, that we had to work with, and kind of a polar opposite of ourselves. What made me do that? Failure scenario, baby, we'll do more to avoid pain than to go toward pleasure. - And then how did it ultimately feel at the end? - Unimaginable, it's kind of funny 'cause I start a lot of my speeches, my keynotes, with footage from the show, which is quite an attention getter for an audience. It's kind of fun. And of course, part of that I show is, well, us winning. And I just, I watched the elation on my face of thinking back to knowing I wouldn't get a win. There's no chance. I'm the fat old scoutmaster against all these people working as hard as I worked, as hard as I worked, as hard as I worked. And then representing all the boy scouts of America, I won the show. Unimaginable, absolutely unimaginable. - And what did they do anything for you or have any comments with you afterwards? - Yeah, afterwards, I asked the executive producer, Matt Koonitz, he did fear factor, wipe out. He's currently doing a deal or no deal island. Great guy, actually, but I asked him afterwards. So did you think I'd win? And he goes, no. But as a result, the best part about it that's come up that I never dreamed would happen for a kid that's never gonna grow up to be anything is now I've gone around the nation doing fundraising talks for boy scouts, being the keynote at their different backwoods and stuff. I've helped raise millions and millions of dollars for the organization. The kid that's never gonna grow up to be anything has now made by the grace of God an effect on who knows how many lives they're gonna get served by this organization, kids that would have been lost without it. And because at that point, the lowest point in my life, I said, no, one of the lowest points. I said, no, that will not happen. - And that's really, I commend you for that because that's really powerful just in itself to be able to really turn that accomplishment around and then take it into a fundraiser and speak and do all the things that you're doing to really make a difference and have an impact for those people who are a part of that organization. So I commend you for that and appreciate that. Let's pick an obstacle here. And let's use it as an example of how to overcome it. So a lot of times, at least people I work with have call reluctance. Oh, I don't want to count salesy. I don't wanna pick up the phone because they're gonna think this. I don't wanna call people I know because they're gonna think of me this way. So it's all about this call reluctance type of an obstacle. How do we apply your technique to help us overcome that and be successful? - And that's exactly what I applied it to. The business that I was in was direct sales. Directs it. You can't find too many harder businesses sometimes than exactly that. And before when I was going towards this big house and big car and beaches of the world, I avoided those things like the plague. Hate it because it's painful. I'm a prideful kind of guy. You know, we all have our pride and it hurts. It's painful. That's why people don't pick up that thousand pound phone. They don't do the follow up. They know the fortunes and the follow up, but we don't do it because it's painful and we'll do more to avoid pain than to go toward pleasure. So instead we clean our desk or we've got these other things to do or this got in the way. I couldn't get to it because no. This is the difference. Okay. That failure scenario of doing the actual technique. And again, this is 50,000 foot. Please guys read the book. What got me doing it. Before it was like, they're gonna make fun of me. They're just gonna hurt. They're gonna think I'm stupid. They're gonna look down on me 'cause I'm trying to sell them something and all that. After I did my failure scenario, never go up to be anything. He would be right for the memory of my dad. Forget that. You know what? I don't care what you say you son of a gun, you know? 'Cause I'm not gonna let the memory of my dad get in the way or happen because you think I'm gonna be stupid. Forget about it. It's not about me. It's about my failure scenario not coming true. And if you provide enough emotion, it'll do it. I ended up being part of the top fraction of 1% of the entire direct sales industry in the world. So I can relate exactly what you're talking about. This'll do it. And this is what I used to teach. - And then let's talk about how do they get more information? Where would they go, Terry? - Yeah, you bet. Come on over now. Every single person that you think about who's highly successful has failed and failed and failed. So if you're at that point, if you're failing, instead of going, man, he's right, I'm never gonna grow up to be anything. I can't do this, I'm not good enough, I'm not smart enough, it's not my time, I'm too old, I'm too fat, I'm too whatever. I want you to go, yes, I'm failing. I'm on the path to success. Every single person who succeeded did this. Failures are not stopping stones, they're stepping stones. Just keep on going down the path, baby.
