(upbeat music) - Hello and welcome to the Accountability Coach podcast. We will discuss topics, ideas, questions and issues related to having a totally balanced and successful life. This is Ann Bakrak. Today we're going to talk about eight powerful ways to maintain persistence. Persistence is the ability to continue to get up no matter how many times you've been knocked down. It requires willpower, flexibility, strength of character, determination and a desire to succeed at all costs. Most people believe that Richard Wagner became a great composer because he was gifted, hmm, not so. From a young age, Wagner liked the theater and music, but he disliked being on stage and was a slow learner at the piano. But his lack of talent was overcome by great persistence. At the age of 15, Richard Wagner decided he wanted to be a composer, so he checked out a book out of a library on the subject and memorized it. To train his ear, he asked a violinist basically from an orchestra to teach him about keys and chords and learn the technique of every orchestra instrument, except the harp. As well, he studied the works of Beethoven to understand how to capture sounds and interpret them as sheet music. But Wagner's early works were so bad, he was really boot off stage. After one of his first performances, he was forced to escape by the rear doors to avoid an enraged audience. In his persistence to hone his music, he studied the works of Mozart and Bach, line by line, until he construct a lyrical phrase. Over the next five years, Wagner continued to relearn the basics, appearing as often as he could to showcase the music that he'd written. Following literally hundreds of performances where he was asked to get off stage or heckled, he gradually began to appreciate what sounds his audiences like to hear and write his music accordingly. If Wagner had not been determined to create music, his audiences could appreciate, we would have never known such masterpieces as Flight of the Valkaris. Boy, I don't know about you, but I might have given up a lot sooner than he did, just from everything that he went through. If there was one common denominator that could be applied to successful people, it would be persistence. The brilliant minds, the great achievers, the magnetic leaders of our generation and throughout history did not achieve their success at the start of their journey. They achieved it when their vision became reality. Persistence is about having a vision and working towards that goal. However, if you study the path that most visionaries have taken to achieve their goals, you'll discover that persistent lies in holding onto the vision, not on the path they choose to achieve their vision. Persistence without purpose is useless. Dog determination to adhere to a plan that is not getting you where you want to go is not persistence. Being persistent means having the strength and flexibility to stop and take stock where you become aware that your efforts are not getting results. The value of persistence really lies in maintaining your goal while repositioning yourself to get there without continually hitting your head against a brick wall. So, what can you do to maintain persistence? Well, here are eight tips to help you persist so you can achieve all of your goals. Number one, maintain your vision. Decide what you want out of life and then work with your vision for the future. Keep your goal firmly planted in the front of your mind so that every action step that you take will lead you closer and closer to achieving what you truly want. Number two, you set facts as life lessons. Nobody achieves their goals with one straight shot at a target. Understand there will be setbacks, maybe failures and mistakes, but don't let a negative or sideways step move you off your path. Mistakes are merely life lessons, so view each backward or sideways step as an opportunity to learn. Number three, act with courage. Don't allow fear or failure to stop you. As human beings, we all fail from time to time. It's the winners who get back up and start again. Act with courage and determination to achieve the things you want in life. Number four, no doesn't always mean no, well, at least in a business situation. There will always be those who will try to discourage or dishearten you. There will also be those who say no, and all you have to say is next. No isn't a personal affront, nor does it mean stop. No may simply mean this doesn't suit me right now, or I'd rather do it perhaps a different way. If you hit a brick wall of nose, simply backtrack to find a new and brighter path to reach your desired destination. Number five, exert control over your action. Make a conscious decision to make every step count. Keep your vision clear in your mind at all times so that your actions become a part of the process to get you where you wanna go. Number six, think creatively and be flexible. Often we become so fixed on the goal we forget that other options exist. Be prepared for the fact that not only will the road to achieving your goals take a number of unexpected turns, the goal post may shift too. Allow yourself to stay flexible and understand that what you originally envisioned may alter to become a fresher, more realistic outcome. Number seven, believe in yourself. Have faith in the fact that you will achieve your goal no matter what circumstances or situations arise. When times get tough and they will get tough, keep your focus clear and don't get bogged down in, "I can't or I won't." Number eight, pick a support team. You know you don't have to do it alone. Gather a team of family or friends or peers or associates who you know, who you can count on to offer you some support and guidance. When things get tough, there is nothing like a friendly pat on the back to keep you really going. Which of these eight tips will you apply or apply even better in your life so you can achieve your goals? Del Carnegie said, "Most of the important things "in the world have been accomplished by people "who have kept on trying when there seemed "to be no hope at all." Well my hope for our time together is that you've got value and an idea or two that will help you be even more successful, personally and professionally.
