(upbeat music) - Hello, and welcome to the Accountability Coach podcast, where we will discuss topics, ideas, questions, and issues related to having a totally balanced and successful life. This is Anne Bakrak. Today we're gonna talk about the pros and cons of change. Well, as many of you may or may not know, my motto is excuses don't count unless you're dead. Well, now I know that sounds harsh, but excuses are just that, excuses. They don't serve anyone and it doesn't matter what your excuses are. You either did it or you didn't do something, just that plain and simple. I love to read prevention magazine. Like many busy people, I pilot my monthly magazines and read them when I travel. I happened to recently be traveling to Peru, so I took all of my prevention magazines that I had been piling up along with me. In the July 2008 issue, there was a great short article under the who we admire section. There are five ladies in a photo who all have t-shirts on with the circle around it, circle around the word excuses and a line through that word excuses. Basically meaning no excuses. Well, you know, I've gotta love that. The article is about five ladies who just celebrated their 30th year of walking together. They walk every single day at 6.30 a.m. rain or shine and have logged an estimated 25,000 miles in that 30 year period of time. What an inspirational story. And we should admire, at least I do, these five ladies. I love it, no excuses. They chose to change their life from the way that it was and begin walking 30 years ago. And they're still going strong. They chose to do it every day, no matter what, rain or shine, no excuses. Well, I love it, maybe you do too. So let's talk about change. What is change? Well, change merely refers to the process of becoming different. Usually when you read about change, it involves major change of an individual or among an entire civilization. Social change can refer to a change in society's institutions, as well as social behavior on a mass scale. Change usually evolves from the same place. Either an event or an action takes place and begins to affect others until the minority becomes the majority. Usually people who are capable of facilitating change or at least who are capable of buying into the notion of a needed change in society are the ones that share the same values and characteristics of the proponents. Well, who are the ones that create the movement for change? They are usually people who are concerned about what they perceive to be social injustice. Of course, this is not universally true. Some influential men in history were not so much interested in the injustice but desired tangible benefits from their efforts. They may have been motivated by a desire for power, the money or for prominence. Still, one can't forget that many men who were widely perceived as cruel dictators were actually motivated by an esoteric, even delusional, possibly, sense of belief. Well, can people change? Change can also refer to an individual's own mission to become different. An individual's change can happen quickly, gradually, or over a long period of time. It may be a conscious decision by someone to change or be a personality change only perceived by others who compare the two distinct personalities, one past and one present. Changes can also be made from the positive or the negative, I'm sorry, for the positive or the negative. Most people won't perceive that they are changing for the worse, of course. They may believe in their minds they are improving on certain individual qualities all the while losing sight of their overall persona. Perhaps they have abandoned their previously upheld values or have altered their own perceptions of happiness or morality. Knowing the definition of change, as well as the human understanding of change, may enlighten you as to start to make changes in your own life. What kinds of changes do you believe are necessary? First, decide why you believe a change is called for. Do you wish to change something about yourself or do others remark that you should change? Are you judging yourself from your own perspectives or the feelings and expressions of others? Do you think some change might be necessary to get from where you are now to where you wanna be because of what you are doing currently isn't working or isn't as effective as it used to be? If you perceive that your current behavior is self-destructive and ultimately leaves you unhappy, well, then it may be time to change. Even so, it's wise to first consider what qualities are helpful and what qualities can be unhealthy. There's no reason to make a great change in life unless you are fairly sure that it will result in your progression of knowledge, happiness, and even greater success. Usually negative qualities are fairly obvious to others as well as you. A lack of self-confidence discourages you from trying new things, leading to a sense of maybe despair and oftentimes resulting in the forging of a dysfunctional relationship. A lack of ambition or goals may cause depression. All of these negative qualities and many others result from self-limiting beliefs. These are beliefs that restrict a person from making progress, making changes, or entertaining perspectives that can seem contrary to the core belief. The pros and cons of change. Some analysts have stated that when you consider change, whether it in context of society or individual improvement, there are a few factors to consider. The pros and the cons of change, as it were, the pros of change are indeed powerful and too many to list them all here, obviously, on this call, can change correct a sense of injustice. Well, it can still instill faith and hope in humanity and improve human relationships. It can lead to better efficiencies in production and lifestyle. At best, change can even save the lives of many people. What are the cons of change, if there are any? There are definitely some negative consequences that could result from change. Once you set a change into motion, usually you cannot go back to the way things were before your actions. Altering the dynamics of certain human relationships could result in lost friendships. Changing a government's policy could upset masses of people and cause civil unrest. One important part of making changes is the willingness to accept responsibility for the consequences, again, if there are any. If you make those necessary changes in your life that you can live with, the results, no matter what they are, that you can live with yourself. Remember that once you set change into motion, it's probably a good idea to follow through with it. Whether or not consequences are for the better or for the worse. It's like you don't know what you don't know. This suggests that the best way to bring about a major life change is to try to plan it out, resist behaving impulsively, and make sure to detail all of your goals in advance. Of course, it goes without saying that when you make a decision to change anything, you are probably doing it because of a perceived benefit. You never know, in most cases exactly what will happen until you try it. It's like I said, you don't know what you don't know. When you enter into change, you must believe it will produce the desired results, or why change? What got you to where you are today probably isn't going to take you to where you wanna be without some degree of change. We all grow as we get older. We experience new things and learn new things that helps us to make changes accordingly. Don't be afraid to change just because you don't know how the change will affect things. I heard it said, if you continually do things the same way, you will always get what you've always gotten, or to some effect like that. Explore what might be. Ask yourself, what's the worst that can happen? In most cases, it will be something desired and something good. You may not do it perfectly the first time when you try to change something, but you'll get better each time and every time that you do it. Try changing something that you've been putting off and experience the results for yourself. Enjoy the results. In most cases, they will be positive. My hope for our time together is that you got value and an idea or two that will help you be even more successful. Personally and professionally. You may be wondering, what should you do next?
