(upbeat music) - Hello, and welcome to the Accountability Code podcast where we will discuss topics, ideas, questions, and issues related to having a totally balanced and successful life. This is Anne Bakrak. Today we're going to talk about the Wheel of Life and how it can help you put into perspective how balanced your life is now and how using the Wheel of Life periodically will help you make progress and keep on track to continuing your journey for total life balance. The Wheel of Life is what I use as a starting point for the goal setting process. The Wheel of Life helps you focus on the activities required to achieve your goals and ultimately obtain what is truly important to you in life. The Wheel of Life is not my invention. Many coaches use the Wheel of Life in many different ways. The main reason I use the Wheel of Life is to help people like coach maintain balance in their short-term and long-term goal setting. The goal of the exercise is to help you create a Wheel of Life that is as round as possible, therefore creating total balance in your life. When the Wheel is out of balance, life is like a roller coaster of ups and downs. Your professional life is up, but your romantic life is down. A person could be an excellent physical health, but suffering from their poor relationships with family and friends. These constant ups and downs take a toll on a person's overall quality of life. The Wheel of Life that I use has eight areas to it and that you continually focus on through your goal setting process. The first one is fitness and health, and these aren't in any particular order. The second one is family and friends. A third area is romance, significant other or partner. The fourth one is money, fifth one is career, sixth one is fun and recreation, seventh one is spiritual development and personal growth, and the eighth area is physical environment. Again, these aren't in any particular order. People begin by rating their current level of satisfaction for each of the eight areas of the Wheel of Life. They rate each area on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the very best and one being dismal. Rating each area of life gives each person a better perspective really on how round their Wheel actually is today. Once you've determined how round your Wheel is in each area, actually how each area affects the Wheel of Life, we figure out how to improve the areas that are lacking. So a lower number on a scale of one to 10 in each area, obviously you're lacking something from a higher number. Each person must then set at least one goal for each of the areas of the Wheel, including areas that are currently ranked high in terms of satisfaction. So the point of this is to make certain that one area isn't improved at the expense of others. I'm sorry, the point of this is to make certain that one area isn't improved at the expense of others. For example, we don't want to go back to the roller coaster ride. We want to improve everybody's score across the board. So if a person ranks family and friends, for example, in that section as an eight and the romance section is a four, our aim is to improve their romance score while maintaining or even improving their family and friends score. So even one low score intermingled with all eights and nines will still affect a person's well-being. Maintenance of scores is just as important as improvement. It's critical. We never want to see anyone's numbers go down even if the rest of their numbers are rising. If one area of the wheel is a perfect 10, we talk about what we need to do in order to maintain or keep that area at a 10. High numbers and low numbers receive similar attention. Obviously one area that's low is going to receive more attention than maintenance of an area, but we still have attention to each of the eight areas of the wheel of life. People complete the wheel of life exercise at least once a year as well as in times of transition. This helps them to gauge their progress and make adjustments to their goals as necessary. Each person should evaluate themselves regularly in order to help accelerate results. The objective of the wheel is to reveal where each person is today and improve upon that in order to maximize balance in his or her life. Visualizing is a key component of the wheel of life. You want to visualize what life would be like with perfect 10s around the wheel of life is an excellent starting point for goal setting. Let's consider the money section of the wheel first, for an example. If the money area of your wheel was a perfect 10, what would your life look like? Here's where you can dream and dream of all the things that you've always dreamed about. How much money would you have saved for your financial future? How much money would you be spending each year? What would you spend your money on? A second home, remodeling, child's education, whatever it is? Would you still have debt? Or would you own everything outright? You want to visualize what your life would be as a perfect 10 in the area of money and then come up with goals around how you want to go about achieving that. Now picture the fun and recreation area on the wheel as a perfect 10. What would your life look like now if fun and recreation was a perfect 10? What would you be doing for fun and recreation in five years, in 10 years, in 20 years, in 30 years? Will you be traveling? Who will you be traveling with? Will you play more golf or tennis? Do more yoga or start yoga? Join a book club, a choir or a country club. What will you be doing for fun and recreation if your area of your wheel and life were a 10 in that area? You want to visualize each area of your life as a perfect 10 and answer the question. What would I be doing in each area of my life if that area were ideal? The things that you visualize when you picture your life as a perfect 10 are in a way your goals. After all, these are things that you can see in your life when you envision your life as ideal. So how do you set out to achieve this ideal lifestyle you've envisioned? Well, obviously, you have to complete your own wheel of life and determine how round your wheel is today. In order to do that, one of the free exercises on my site at www.accountabilitycoach.com is this complimentary resource. It's available to you, it's available to everyone. Feel free to do this exercise as many times as you like, as often as you like, and feel free to share this exercise with others that you think would get value from it. If you Google the internet for other wheel of life exercises, I'm sure there will be others that you will have access to that are probably free on their websites as well. Tommy Lasorda said the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination. Begin enjoying the experience of an even greater life quality and total life balance. Aim for what you want each and every day. Until next time, make it a great day, today and every day. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) [ Silence ]
