(upbeat music) - Hello, and welcome to the Accountability Coach podcast where we will discuss topics, ideas, questions, and issues related to having a totally balanced and successful life. This is Ann Baccrack. Today we're gonna talk about procrastination, something I'm sure most of you aren't super familiar with. Richard M. Devos said, "Life, it tends to respond to our outlook, to shape itself, to meet our expectations." Well, the phenomena of procrastination is what separates outstanding performance from mediocre performance. A business associate of mine recently conducted a series of interviews with 15 of their most successful clients. In answer to the question, "If you knew then, what you know now, what would you have done differently?" Well, this person encountered a reoccurring theme, which can be paraphrased as follows. Life happens, and if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have used it as an excuse not to do the work. When I finally stopped using everything that normally occurs in life and business, as an excuse not to do the work, my results dramatically improved, my life dramatically improved, and the work got easier. Well, we all have challenges we have to deal with on a professional and personal level. Life happens, and life gets in the way at certain times in all of our lives. You have to deal with life issues we have to encounter every day, and we have to stay focused on what is truly important to us and not stop the forward momentum that you have worked so hard to build. It is harder, sure, but you will persevere anyway, so why not make the adjustment to deal with life issues sooner rather than later, or not at all? Have you ever wondered why some people become champions, superstars, or even celebrities? Well, the world is filled with talented, creative, and ambitious people who, despite their best efforts, can't seem to fulfill their dreams. So what is that X factor that sets the Academy Award winners, the Olympic champions, and the build gates of the world apart from the rest? Clearly, these people share the common denominators of ability, motivation, and success, but there is another more subtle trait that superstars share. They are receptive to coaching, and probably have at least one coach. Have you ever considered that not succeeding at something important to you, even for a really good reason, is not the same as achieving your goals? Have you ever said or thought, "Oh, I wish I had more time." If I had more time, I would. If there were only a few more hours in this day, I could. Well, most of us at some time or another have probably thought or said this to ourselves. I know I'm guilty. It has unfortunately become a cliche, but stop for a moment and consider the power of the phrase, work smarter and not harder. Successful people know that you can have whatever level of success you desire, and the quality of life you truly want by making some adjustments to the way you are currently operating in your professional and personal life. All that most people need are systems, processes, focus, real desire to achieve your goals, belief that you can do whatever you set your mind to, and the key, accountability. Well, wouldn't it be great if our good intentions worked the way we think they should? Not even enthusiasm guarantees positive results. There's often a wide gap between our intentions and our actions. Poor follow through, consciously deciding to do something, but then not doing it is a fact of life for many of us. We fail to take the action necessary to be in alignment with our good intentions. So if you're like most people, procrastination can be very frustrating. Procrastination takes a toll on virtually every aspect of our lives. It not only threatens our health, but it also prevents us from achieving personal, financial and career goals that are well within our reach. Good intentions don't magically lead to good results. They are a start, however. They are unfortunately not enough. This is just the truth. Think about the promises you've made to yourself in the past. Of all the promises and commitments you have made to yourself, how many of them have you actually kept? Have you ever considered the cost of poor follow through or procrastination in your life? Think about a goal that you have failed to meet in the past. Was your failure to follow through or procrastinating a byproduct of the fact that you were really okay with the way things are to begin with? Or does the poor follow through procrastination really bother you? Does the knowledge that you didn't follow through with your goals eat you up inside? Because you know you aren't doing what you need to do to get the result you say you want. Well, as long as we continue to expect our good intentions to work the way we think they should, instead of facing reality about the probability of following through, we will just keep repeating the same mistakes. When we rationalize with ourselves to avoid completing necessary tasks, we were actually only holding ourselves back from getting what we really desire. This is why the best performers and athletes have coaches. We're only human, it's okay, get help. If you are like most people, you might be in one of the following situations. You would like to have an even more successful life, personally and/or professionally. You now believe that the path you are on probably isn't going to get you to where you want to be in the timeframe that you desire. Perhaps you realize that your life isn't in balance. You have and still are spending too much time working on your business and not enough time enjoying other aspects of your life. Like your family, your friends, your spouse or partner, being fit and healthy, for example. Maybe you're tired of procrastinating or having good intentions that don't actually produce the desired results. Or you understand that you need someone in your life to help keep you on track so you can achieve all of your goals. Is it possible that you know there is more to life than just work and to have a desire to experience a great quality of life? If any of these situations resonate with you, you will want to take action on doing things that will help you focus on doing the highest payoff activities that you know you need to do to put you in the highest probable position for you to achieve all of your goals in the timeframe that you desire. Begin enjoying the experience of an even greater life quality and total life balance. Aim for what you want, each and every day. Well until next time, make it a great day today and every day.
