"The Lord be with you." A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. "For learning more on them." When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said, "By the power of placeble, the prince of demons, he drives out demons." Others to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid west, and house who fall against house." And if Satan is divided against himself, how his kingdom stands? For you say that it is by Bezebu that I drive out demons. If I then drive out demons by Bezebu, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore, there will be your judges. But if it is by the thing of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. But when one is stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes their spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through a red region's searching for rest. But finding none, it says, "I shall return to my home from which I came." But upon retaining, it finds its swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits, more wicked than itself, whom of in and dwell there. And the last condition of that man is waste than the feast. The gospel of the Lord. St. John 23 was born in North Italy in a place called Soto Ilmont in Bergham. And at a very tender age, he joined the minor seminary. And he was ordained a priest in 1904. And immediately after his ordination, he was made the secretary of the bishop of Bergham. And a few years later, he was appointed to go to Rome to head a section of the Pontifical missions whereby all the people that were sent as nucios to different places were coming from his office. At a certain point, he was sent as a nuncio to different places, especially. The last appointment was to go to France as the nuncio in France. And later on, he was appointed or he was elected as pope. And he chosen-- his name was Angero Longari. Angero Giuseppe Longari. But when he was the med pope, he chose the name John. But because there were other John before him, he was the John 23. And immediately after his appointment as pope, the first thing he did was we must modernize the change. And in 1959, he convoked the second Vatican council. And there was a preparation for this council. The first sessions began on 11th October, 1962, a day like this one. And the whole purpose of this council, where the catch word was what is they called the adjornamento, which means bringing today. In Italy, an adjorno is day. So the adjornamento is bringing the church up to death. And it was the first time in the history of the church. This was the 20th first synody of bishops. It was the first council that women were invited, although they were only observers. But the rest of the councils, no woman was allowed to come to the meetings of the bishops. And this was so because John had already-- John 25 had already gone to different countries, different places, and saw how the faith was growing in those areas. And yet they still remained and prayed like those in Rome. With their different cultures, he said, this cannot be. If we are celebrating the Eucharist today in English, it's because of that adjornamento. If we can sit as Christians, take the Bible in our hands and read it ourselves, it's because of that adjornamento. So he realized that a church is one, but this church has different faces. This church has different places where it comes from. Therefore, the Americans must be a Catholic church as Americans. The Indians must be in the Catholic church as Indians. Today, in the first reading we hear, the same things happening in the very, very, very church. When in the Galatia, there are two groups of Christians, the followers of Jesus Christ. The first are those that have become Christians, the Jewish Christians. And the others were those that were non-Christian and Jewish, the pagans that have become Christians. So a problem came about. The Jewish Christians said that the non-Jewish Christians, the pagan Christians, must follow the law of the Jews in order to become the Christians. Therefore, they needed to do three things in order to become Christians. They must be circumcised, the first law, which was every Jew, every male Jew, at the eighth day were supposed to be circumcised, as a sign of taking part in the covenant. The second was the food laws, what we eat. You cannot eat animals that do not ruminate. You cannot eat pork. You cannot eat all these old food laws. But the pagans never minded, they ate pig and whatever they were, but they say, if you are becoming Christians, you must not eat this. The third was the Sabbath, the observance of the Sabbath day. Is it on Sunday? Is it on Saturday? Is the Sabbath? Anti-po comes in that the law of the Jews, the law does not justify you. If it is the law that justifies you, then the death of Jesus is useless. The law is important, only if it is a preparation for grace, for faith. Therefore, what matters, what is more important is the grace, is the faith. The example of Abraham, who was called by God and in faith, Janet and he was rendered justified because he believed in God. Why is the law impossible to serve us? Because the law is difficult to obey. You can obey the law at a certain time, but you cannot obey it to the data the rest of your days. And therefore, Paul says the law is a case, because you cannot obey it fully. Christianity is the region of grace, is the region that we receive faith as a gift. Because in that, that is what justifies us. It is faith that justifies us. It is faith that made Abraham believe in God and he received the promises of the inheritance. All of us are children of Abraham because of faith, not because of the law. The law is different. So as we celebrate today the memory of John 23, it gives us an invitation, first of all, to know that we are justified by faith. But secondly, this faith is going to be celebrated in different ways, in different places. Usually what we want, it's normal for everyone to want that. That one does things the way I do it. That one believes the way I believe. But variety, diversity is what forms the Catholic Church. Let us pray for a true diversity. Let us pray for a true faith that springs from the heart through the belief in God. And may John, John 23, intercede for us.
