what's up all what's going on man oh nothing man just wearing my red shirt big Georgia fan now oh good yeah I had to switch up got to be a fan of the higher ranked team I'm not loyal good morning roaster good to see you today is the usual we are gonna be breaking down old Vanderbilt and but first we're gonna have some quick little Georgia thoughts right and whatever you guys think let us know in the comments but mostly we're kind of talking about Georgia to project forward to Vanderbilt then of course Vanderbilt offense Vanderbilt defense opponent games of interest if you guys watch the Tuesday show you know how we do it Paul quick quick takeaways right practical takeaways from from Georgia practical takeaways Texas past defense is good that was not an illusion that was not a mirage Carson Beck was held to a career low and passing efficiency he needed 41 throws to get 175 yards and he threw three picks so they went from the more vent Georgia's 23 points in the first half five scoring drives three field goals two touchdowns on those five scoring drives they had 25 gelsons a bigger than that good morning pal good morning Drew they had 25 plays for a total of 89 yards on their five first half scoring drives on the other four drives they had in the first half that's right they had nine drives in the first half two three and outs and two turnovers and what was the distinction between those drives and the other five on those drives they had 75 yards of green in front of them when they started their drive whereas in the other ones they started on our 14 on our 30 when you're doing that you're basically taking a stiletto if you're the Texas offense and driving in deliver of our Texas defense they just you're just not giving those guys a chance and but the game plan was good on defense and if you were frustrated at any point realize that that was a game plan built to exploit Georgia's one-sidedness as an offense and Bill took exploit their penchant for turnovers so you can't exploit that as much when they're starting with the ball on your 14 yard line so all in all I thought the Texas defense did a good job second half they did give up that one drive yeah 89 yards really the two key plays on that drive were 21 yard completion on a third and ten backed up on their on our on their goal line and then they hit that 43 yard leaf liquor which frankly I just thought was an amazing play call and execution so hat tip to them on that one but other than that they shut down Georgia's passing attack Etienne played great he was the offensive MVP for me on both sides of the ball but his game in fact we would have viewed it pretty modestly if Georgia had full fields to drive instead of starting at our 30 yeah yeah same thing with the defense the untested part of the defense was the past defense I thought they absolutely balled out the only apparition I want to pay attention to Georgia dropped the ball a ton three times we had to read they had three yeah so it's like that's where that's the only part but what would that change Carson Beck from like 58% to like 65 or something well not just that I mean Georgia that's that was part of our game plan I mean Georgia we've done that all year - we've just done that all year so that in your game plan that they're gonna have a lack of execution at times yeah and so but I liked it I thought our run defense started to figure it out at times our pass rush not great that was the part that I thought was interesting now they have a really good offensive line number two in the SEC it might be number one now but as far as like getting to Beck a little bit tricky but also Beck gets it out quick Beck played a role in being hard to get to watch him he knows where his escapes are when he gets pressure then you know he steps up or he shuffles two feet to the right or you know he'll run around like a chicken with his head cut off like he did late in the game when on that on that conversion with his feet yeah but also there was a couple times to like Sarela almost got to him a couple of times okay so he was just getting rid of it it wasn't like we were getting stonewalled he was getting it out fast and some of those times I have to look on those interceptions you know where they pressure-based interceptions - I didn't really look for that but I think the big thing is everyone's like well duh Paul and Connor we're good with the defense they're like yeah we went up to number one in FBI so our our defensive stats improved playing Georgia so number one defense in the country the big question everyone wants to know is the offense do you want me to go first or you go first on that go ahead okay cool we were talking about before game Paul disagrees with me here so we can probably get both sides of the argument here first main takeaways from Georgia Quinn's mechanics suck and we need to find a way to manufacture a run game so my after watching the game several times sideline view and then watching the all 22 from behind Quinn I've actually become a little bit more sympathetic to Quinn in the past game not for his lack of pocket awareness that's a problem not for his ability to step up all that stuff I agree that was bad mechanics bad I've been harping on that even before the Georgia game but they covered us pretty well on a lot of those key downs and they had two safeties high the whole time and the safeties if you look never took a step forward it's like they weren't even in the run fits you know they just immediately step back so all of our deep crossers and stuff that normally work completely canceled out and so then Quinn would have to go to a check down which we saw 50 times but also Georgia has athletes so as soon as you throw it to the check down they rally and we get three yards opposed to like seven and so I became more sympathetic to Quinn not having anywhere to deliver the ball to several times that I wasn't able to see from watching the sideline copy but there were some times he could get a late dig but normally those late digs are your fourth read that's your backside read and Quinn was under siege so I didn't think he was getting to his fourth read very often even though on tape you could point to it and say that was open but I think the biggest problem here is we got to find a way to manufacture a run game so our lack of running ability we are point one yards in the first half at the end of the game we were like 1.1 and when you do that on early downs we're constantly behind the sticks if you're constantly behind the sticks they're able to tee off in the pass rush with a bunch of first round guys our offensive line we're struggling with that Quinn was shaken up early because of the coverage just guys so he was doubting himself lack of pocket awareness some trouble and what he was seeing and then like we said the safeties are too high there's just no winning formula there for us to do well against off a defense of that caliber but I think the core issue ultimately was our lack of ability to run the ball Paul what do you think I agree I think we saw a lot of the same things one thing I would say is that there's a tendency to attribute all sacks to the offensive line and Texas gave up seven I personally attributed three to the O line yep EFF attributed two and they attributed to live sacks to Quinn you so I would just say that it's easy to see a guy drop back in a pocket and then a guy you know who's in a freakin tracks trance out in the nine wide is sprinting up the field and your tackles trying to you know contain him if your quarterback just stands there like a statue particularly when the middle was blocked up and the guy gets sacked your quarterback created the sack especially hanging behind the tackles yes you have to throw the ball or take two steps forward and if you take two steps forward that guy who's sprinting up the field just gets driven right past the quarterback it's a flyby and suddenly that guy is three yards past the quarterback and he can't get back his momentum is going one way he can't reverse it and now the quarterback can stand there kind of leisurely pat the ball and wait for some of those route concepts maybe to come open the other thing I would I would come up with is I thought our first half route concepts were not very good for dealing with what Georgia was throwing at us we know Georgia has a lead speed a linebacker we know they have great closing speed as a entire defense and we know that they're built structurally to make you check it down and then go clean it up right so checkdowns that we typically do that get eight yards we're getting two yards and that puts you behind the chains I thought we'd see more mesh I thought we'd see more crossers I thought we'd see more attempts of you know doing smash routes things like that a lot of our routes were isolation routes and I was I was surprised by that frankly and then in the second half you saw a lot more motion and you saw some changes in that regard but I thought that was interesting and I don't know what that was about maybe there's some aspect that I'm not taking into account or seeing the full picture as SARC does but I think the quarterback is responsible for sacks much more than people think and that your ability to maneuver the pocket or simply get rid of the ball I think if you watch other teams or even if you watch the NFL you know guys don't stand in the pocket in the NFL for four seconds unmolested in the same spot you know yeah they maneuver around and the the ways in which you maneuver in the pocket there's certain ways the pocket now if you get interior pressure you're you're in big trouble but when you're getting exterior pressure or blitz pressure that's coming off like from the tackle there are very predictable ways that you should be maneuvering that help your own line that your own line is expecting you to do to help them and if you don't do it the alignment looks like a complete a hole but if you do do it you've got four seconds in the pocket so I think although Georgia did bring great pressure some of that is the the un-virtuous circle right you're behind the chain so it's predictable down in distance Georgia's got elite pass-rushers bringing back Michael with a huge difference for them in this game they were bringing that linebacker on the other side was it Wilson Walker Walker they were bringing Walker on the other side and that was just with the ring at times because we were behind the chains and but at the same time many instances in which the quarterback could have really helped out the O line and certainly the wide receivers could have helped us out by getting open a little earlier I saw the open routes were on first and second down but I thought third and ten we were largely kind of cooked yeah that and that's what I studied a lot was the third downs and man they covered us up and it was they just had they just had our number man and like so for Quinn right like pocket command has to be there like on third downs right for time first and second I'll have to look more but on third no one's open and it's third down so he's gonna hold the ball because if you throw it away you just live in a die you can take a sack on third down now you can't get it smacked out of your hand and fumble on third down that that kind of stuff can't happen but they were also I mean they were torn with our protections man like they were getting our offensive line confused and they were getting interior pressure sometimes yep and doing that earlier with Quinn it just messed with it man he's already doesn't trust his guards I've seen that all season he doesn't trust the guards or else you'd step up where you feel safe and but once they started getting interior pressure and looping around and we were missing some of that stuff early I think it is totally messed with Quinn's head and so he already naturally has that issue of staying back too far and but once you like actualize that to him now he's not gonna step up but like say there's the nose and the end rushing right you know that you can work towards the B gap you know and you can work towards the A if you're on the three techniques side you know yeah I mean these are predictable rush lanes now Georgia did change the picture a lot on him but it's just gonna be I don't know in year three halfway through the season how much appreciably better this can actually become well it could become better because you're facing inferior fronts to Georgia but not truly becoming better that's it so anytime we'll play an elite D you'll have these same issues crop up unless we have a dramatically different game plan but you know against the Vanderbilt's of the world there's every reason we should go out there and have success on offense and then people pronounce us to be healed yeah that's the big fear is like we figured it out guys that's gonna be the tricky part all right yeah before we hit old Vanderbilt let's hear a word from Laura Baker hi I want to tell you about Laura Baker if you're looking for a new home in the 512 or friend give her a call she's a friend give her a call everyone all right so let's look at the Vanderbilt offense we had a illuminating comment last week that was why look at stats if upsets happen so and he said this is how so Paul you know Vegas right he said why don't you guys do it like Vegas where they watch games and then talk to coaches so he does not believe that Vegas uses any mathematical formulas or stats they in fact watch every single game throughout the world because you know they have lines on every sporting event ever yeah it's subjectively by people they can't verify if they actually know football and then sometimes they text Steve Sarkeesian and he'll tell them we're gonna win by three so this is how this gentleman believes that Vegas works by subjective watching a film and nothing objective well as as someone who gambles and has picks on inside Texas and I'm currently at winning at about a 68% clip which is crazy and also someone who knows actual professional gamblers like people who actually make their living as a gambler I can tell you you might be shocked to learn that there are gamblers who don't even watch the games yeah and their whole process is mechanistic statistics models and playing key numbers and dispassionate analysis and dispassionate analysis and they don't even watch the games and I don't mean they don't watch the result and like pull for it I mean they don't watch games at all there's guys in Europe who bet American college football who don't know the rules of American college football but what they are good at is Bayesian analysis statistical modeling and they understand key numbers three and a half seven and a half ten and a half fourteen and a half etc and they bet games that go through key numbers pretty crazy huh yeah it's just crazy how this is what drives me nuts with the just watch ball crowd first off we do watch ball I watch every game from our opponents so it's not like I'm just getting my analysis from stats here but also stats are a record of something that happened yes right so it's not like these are like we're predicting seven fumbles a game it's saying they're fumbling three times a game there's no magic here guys this is a this is historical numbers of what occurred in a game so I don't think I just wish in school we had in high school and in college more emphasis on statistics I think fundamentally we don't understand it as a population we think it's like this magic fufu thing and it starts to bother we we have a sort so people worry about literacy we also have to worry about numeracy we have an enumerate society and people don't understand scale of numbers too so that's a whole other discussion but yeah I think that it's very interesting to get people's perspectives on that kind of stuff and I think you actually need to do both actually so I don't agree with the pure mechanistic models by the way no you have to watch the game I think there's information to be gleaned so there's a reason that early in the year I started betting Army Navy and Indiana and it had everything to do with getting my eyes on them and watching them play and realizing that something fundamentally had changed at those three programs and that they were different and it's taken Vegas is still not caught up because everybody faded all three of those schools last week I bet on all three and went three and oh so we'll see they're starting to catch up now you'll notice that Navy is not even a two touch is less than two touchdown underdog to Notre Dame so if you make that line before the year they're 28 and a half point dogs stats are indicators they're also diagnostics right like a lot of the times I can look like this thing is flashing red on the chart when I watch the game I need to pay attention oh that's because the defensive tackles hurt that's why the game helps you start to it'll key win on certain things to pay attention to and then you can try to figure out from the game tape why that's actually occurring so that's the interesting part let's look at the offense and they have a it's a pretty weird team man they're winning because they have an awesome scheme and they're executing that's that's why but they are the post boys for schematic victory and like walking a very narrow line of play call play style and scheme to victory yeah and if you can get them off that little path not only can you beat them you can blow them out yeah we'll talk about if you can get it if you can get 21 points ahead on bandi what now yeah but it's really hard to get them off that path they got great balance yep so what's most interesting right time of possession their 13th in the country right so they're they have the ball about 55% of the time look at that pace yep and their seconds per play like second third to last in the entire country so 30 seconds so they are moving slow and deliver with the ball so it's also not just about like them they're bleeding clock not purely from keeping the ball going they're just using that full 40 seconds or whatever to get everything off so they may have exactly the right play call they may know exactly what they're gonna do they're still gonna let the play clock run down because they believe if we continue to play in our style and our speed it's frustrating to the other team and by limiting possessions it emphasizes and puts a highlight on our coaching and our scheme and our execution not our talent Paul do you guys talk betting on your pod John we do talk betting on my pod typically the that he's referring to the everyone gets a trophy podcast you could find that on iTunes Spotify wherever you listen to your pods and I do have on the aforementioned professional gambler that I know we talk betting I'll even talk a little betting with Randy sometimes mostly just as a way to discuss the game and perceptions but yeah I do talk betting and there's a column on inside Texas called beating Vegas which you're welcome to join and and read and if you've been betting it it would it would be more it would have more than paid for your inside Texas subscription yeah Paul's my retirement plan I just read beating Vegas and I invest all my savings into it so great idea really smart yeah and this is not financial advice all right so yards per play sixty second in the country not bad right but not like what you think when you know how efficient they are so points per drive 30 second success rate important 30 second holistically we'll look at rushing and in passing separately not an explosive team 150 in the country so they're just it's just jab jab jab jab jab jab right hook jab jab jab jab jab jab cross you know it's just like they're just gonna keep bunching you and then occasionally they'll hit the the pass but they're gonna kind of bludgeon you first so let's look at rushing offense 10th in the country in rushing play this rate so heavy heavy rushing attack what's interesting though 40 rush pass yeah what's interesting is they are not actually a good rushing team statistically they're 95th in the country in yards per rush you're not an explosive rushing team right yeah but no one's been better converting third and two yep and that's what they're doing right so if you're averaging three and six you're ending up let's just give it three and a half so three and a half on first three and a half on second now you're seven so now you're third and three right and then they're gonna convert it they're just are like clockwork so it's like they're just the numbers aren't legotti but they're it's just it's perfectly it's like basketball like when you're taking the step for a layup it's like one two like they hit the they hit their steps perfectly man rushing success rate the slightly above average 60 second but like we said rushing are supposed to be 109 the backs are not anything special they're both grunts from brand parry ones from Austin LBJ so both Texas products but if they weren't in it such an advantageous scheme they'd be having a tough time right but if you're doing option stuff you're you're forcing your backs into ideal situations if they're getting the ball by nature of that they're getting the ball with an advantage right yeah I'm actually surprised that they don't have more explosives just because we know that playing with a dual threat quarterback as a running back whether high school college or NFL raises your per carry average also if you have a quarterback who's hitting big plays over the top or I should say consistent plays over the top that should help as well but no they're they're still averaging four yards a carry at running back yeah gotta watch the shovel pass yeah we'll talk stowers too cuz he's a player is the one remind me to talk about the triangle that drives Vanderbilt yeah the transfer triangle yeah yeah stowers is a hell of a tight end all right so looking at rushing offensive line not a great offensive line right offensive line are 97 but let's keep in mind right they're running a ton of two back and a ton of tight ends so a lot of times there's seven blockers right yeah they can even be eight you know and so the offensive line gets a lot of help all their guys are older like seniors or grads so it's a mature line but by themselves not super good where they're strong is rushing power success rate so short yardage stuff they're able to do but they do get stuffed a lot so guys are gonna run nearly a quarter get stuffed yeah exactly so like and that's that's the talent differential you know so like a quarter of their runs you'll knife you'll be able to knife in the backfield and that's how you get Vanderbilt behind the sticks is you blow up the run play on first or second down yep now they still convert it somehow with their magic wizardry but that's the game that's the magic of Diego Pavia so this is what's interesting they rarely pass they're like 125th in the nation but they're excellent at it 10th in the country in yards per pass 9.2 yards per pass if you just want a quick diagnostic if you think of stats as a diagnostic yards per attempt is a very useful one because whether you do that by hitting bombs intermittently or whether because you're this incredibly buttoned up efficient passing offense that hits 12 yarders like a Colt McCoy 2008 type guy yeah or your hit and bombs every other throw like Vince Young 2005 yards per attempt tells the tale either way every time I drop back to throw how many yards do I expect to get 9.2 if you're over 8 you're an effective college passing offense fair yep yeah and so passing success rate 14th - right very good so they're able to move the ball whenever they do pass and 36 and passing explosivity so also able to hit the bomb so they rarely do it now why is their success tied to how infrequently they do it sure I'm I'll give them a 20 to 30% boost probably because the defense keep the safety keep running down to the box and at that point junior Cheryl's over your head right so I think the lack of passing helps them in the passing game but it still doesn't take away from the fact that when they call it Bobby execute as well as the wide receivers offensive efficiency and totality 38th in the country yeah pretty pretty good man with Vanderbilt so a line that's pretty impressive yeah look at this bird down and fourth down percentage I know so they're fifth in the country and third down conversions fifth over 51 percent fourth down they've converted 75 percent yeah that's really good early downs EPA in other words what's their basic success early yeah first and second down 16th in the country it's good very good and then red zone they can execute there 95% of the time that's it and also probably it doesn't throw interceptions third in the country I think he has one on the year yeah so not only does the only have one interception he only has one turnover throw turnover worthy throw yeah for example Quinn yours had six against Georgia only one of them was converted into an interception and the general rule on that is half of your turnover where the where the plays get converted to a turnover so Pavia has committed one turn over worthy play and he got punished with a turnover yeah so that's pretty darn good so I want to talk about this transfer triangle of success that's driven this offense but before I do that Connor I want to talk about a friend of the show you know who that guy is I wonder is it potentially old Gabriel it is Gabe Winslow and if you do a mortgage with him you can call him Gabriel in recent mid 832 557 1095 and just like the biblical Gabriel he's an angel sent from heaven you're doing a mortgage why over 20 years in industry super sharp guy he's got a law degree and he's just excellent at what he does go read his Google reviews we have tons of testimonials both here on the YouTube channels for inside Texas and my everyone gets a trophy podcast just he does right by people he's super slick and sharp and he's the guy you want in your corner for the biggest financial decision that all of us will make in our lives Connor people sometimes take this lightly this is a guy you need to call 832 557 1095 and if you're looking for instant offense and your team went two and ten last year as Vanderbilt did you need to go to Las Cruces New Mexico Connor because that's where the ballers are I'm talking about the New Mexico state Aggies and I want to talk about that triangle that I've been teasing here the triangle is Diego Pavia offensive coordinator Tim Beck no not that Tim Beck long-horn fans and tight end Eli Stowers so who is Diego Pavia Diego Pavia is the the straw that straw that stirs the drink he's the base of the triangle without him the other two guys don't matter Pavia is a fascinating story if you don't know anything about him he's a guy I've known about for quite a while because of the aforementioned gambling he covers the spread when he was in New Mexico state he is charitably listed at 6 feet tall he's a little over 200 pounds he's a very good runner he's extremely strong and here's the thing that makes him interesting former all-American state champion wrestler in New Mexico and he was not recruited at a high school at all for football so he had to go to the New Mexico military Institute yeah he walked on at New Mexico state I think they might have given him a late scholarship like later that year or something but he came in like seventh on the depth chart and by the end of the year he was the starting quarterback brought New Mexico state to their first winning season in years decades and he's just a baller and he is a quarterback talk about being game he is a quarterback who plays like he's willing to die out in the field to win the game and by the way if you want to like meet him after the game in the parking lot he would be fine with that as well he is very much got the wrestling mentality and he was good enough that he actually had full ride wrestling scholarships out of high school to go to like places like Nebraska stuff like that like legit wrestling so that's Diego Pavia great scrambler only one turnover worthy throw all year he's averaging over nine yards per attempt here's a very interesting fact for him because often counter intuitive but it actually is true you often do want to blitz dual threat quarterbacks because they so rely on their feet that they'll get themselves into trouble on third and long and get sacked right in fact if you look statistically broadly and this is where statistics statistics are helpful running quarterbacks get sacked more than passing quarterbacks or stationary quarterbacks because they over trust their legs and their athleticism Diego Pavia when blitzed 41 of 60 68% completions 555 yards at 9.3 yards per attempt five touchdowns zero interceptions that's in my breakdown I'm like you literally make him stronger whenever you try him and it's so it's like this is saying exactly I'm glad you found that too when it's in my breakdown because I'm like oh no and luckily Texas doesn't blitz a lot but like he is that mentally tough that he's like oh oh yeah if you bring the heat he grows stronger hey and and here's the other thing about him the rustling background and because he's just under six feet tall he could level change and what do I mean by that not only is he elusive with his feet because he's fast and quick he literally can bend to almost a squat when big six foot five guys are coming by to grab him he'll literally squat down like he's a humong Cambodian tribesmen like resting near a path and then he'll just pop right back up and throw the ball as your arms like you know close on air above him so he's a really fun player he's not so fun to play here's the other part of the triangle Eli Stowers he's their tight end he's by farther number one receiver he has two twice as many receptions as any other player on Vanderbilt's team he could play anywhere in the SEC he could play anywhere in the SEC he's a light tight end he's more of a receiver than a blocker but he's a willing blocker and he's a former quarterback himself so he can actually throw the ball as well so remember that for trick plays he went to A&M everything 14 yards a catch and I think he's got over 30 receptions already so he's the most important part of their pass catching offense and because he's a tight end they do a ton of sneaky stuff with him because they run so much he lulls you into complacency and then play action to Stowers is really effective and then the guy crawling at all the orchestra the orchestrator of this all is Tim Beck I'm sure Connor has some great stuff in his breakdown about this but he's just really creative and he just schemes up every little aspect of the running and Pat play action passing game suited to his personnel and he's the ultimate coordinator that all other offensive coordinators hate because you can give him garbage with like two little pieces of silver and he'll find a way to make that into a productive offense whereas every other offensive coordinator is like well we're loaded everywhere but left guard has been a problem left guard is really holding us back right now you can't do the things I want to do Tim Beck's like I got two guys who can play great I'm gonna build the entire offense out around isolating those two guys on your defense and finding ways to make all my weaknesses not so weak so Connor your thoughts yeah if you're a football dork I pause Vanderbilt's game all the time and I try to guess where the balls gonna go because they'll do like they'll do two tight ends overload this side of the formation I'm like okay and so I'll see them they'll do this quick spring out option from it and I'm like okay that's a tell like whenever those two are on that side this place coming and so I'm like watch for it no they they're constantly playing on that every time you think you have a tendency they break it and they're just they're remarkable man and the amount of personnel diversity they do you'll see a lot of guys get touches in this game that aren't even on this list because their targets are so low but they they are super creative man they'll find a way to get bottom of the roster wide receivers in there because they have this one skill they'll find a way to get a bottom of the depth chart tight end in because he can do this it's creative and a big thing at Tim Beck people are playing for him because you get to play like that he'll create a unique package where once a once again you get to go out there and get a catch he's super resourceful it's a super fun offense and it's the history of offensive football you get to watch because they'll go to empty they'll do all of that but also you're watching triple option you're watching inverted wishbone you're watching I mean you get to watch the history of offensive football it's super cool if you're a fan of scheme in the same New Mexico state game for the aforementioned personnel group and coordinator I've watched them go from five wide empty quarterback draw to full-house back field full-back bomb like basically the full-back ran of fade and Diego Pabia hit him in the back of the end zone dude there it's awesome I mean I was playing this until they start doing this to us and then we're gonna be like man I hate Pabia that's it yeah the guy you love until he plays your team yep and you know as someone mentioned in the in the chat when New Mexico state went to Auburn last year and blew them out it at Auburn Diego Pabia threw a terrible interception and the Auburn quarterback cornerback is running up the sideline and Pabia ran them down picked him up double I'm gonna say double a double a double body slammed them to the ground which caused a bench clearing brawl which got New Mexico state fired up and from that point on they blew out off see that's the problem okay so this is what you'll see too this team talks a lot of trash yes you may get you out of character like remember whenever we were all making fun of Malachi more for being emotional wreck when they beat him yeah so I thought that was just an outlier the more games I've watched they infuriate opposing athletes who are better athletes because they're so used to being that superior athlete that doesn't work here you know you you're gonna end up squeezing so hard you break your own hand there's nothing to grab on the triple option there's nothing doubt athlete you know and so it's like you just got to do your eleventh and have discipline but you'll see it the DB's right like the wide receiver for Texas or whatever he'll drop the ball had nothing to do with the DB the DB will come up and be like see I told you man and it starts to mess with a dude and like you'll see throughout the game that all of their games are very chippy there's a lot of shoving now none of its dirty I want to clarify that it's all psychological warfare and if you listen to Clark Lee that's what he's about this guy like likes to talk about philosophy more than football and so that's what's fascinating is do we start to see our players act out of character because as soon as you tackle Pavia he's saying something nice to you in your ear or whenever you drop the balls wide receiver that DB is coming up and messing with your head but that's all taking part of Pavia's mental infusion he's like basically brain transplanted this team to have this really tough confident style of football yeah I was gonna say they're sort of like a higher-end service academy but based on how army and navy are playing they're exactly like two service academies they're probably approximate and all three of them have outstanding quarterbacks which is sort of an elevating tool for that kind of system of offense yeah they're they're awesome all right some some quick other things just so you guys know so you don't get surprised Quincy Skinner so Stowers is their leading receiver period so no that but second is white out Quincy Skinner boundary X type 62 205 good on comebacks nice hands in the red zone you're gonna find them mostly in the intermediate as far as like a true skillset not special for the SEC you know kind of just an all-around receiver that'll get you whenever the plays called but like we said the scheme is what elevates a majority of this team it's not because they have athletes and dudes everywhere second junior Cheryl 17 attempts a small guy five foot eleven a hundred eighty eight pounds sophomore he's their speed threat I think 40 percent of his targets are deep which is crazy yep but he's only caught two of eight of those but be aware Cheryl do you know what's weird they don't throw screens that's what I was looking at the option exactly they don't throw screens which because I was thinking junior Cheryl normally these guys are boomer bust they throw screens are you throw touchdowns to him but they don't really throw screens which is interesting and I also agree with philosophically by the way but junior Cheryl going deep you got to watch him because the DB's they're gonna fall asleep eventually and that's what remember the Alabama where they really put the knife in Alabama when they threw it over the top that was to Cheryl at towards the end of the game so that's what you have to watch for Richie Hoskins a Rudy story walk-on stereo type slot reliable slot guy rarely gets in but he's made a couple plays for him Cole Spence they have another really big tight end six with seven 250 they'll take him out of the core for a nice reception every now and then too you're gonna say something Paul you kind of like now I just one thing to I don't want to undersell Vandy's total talent level I mean it's it's not comparable to Texas but just know that the drags of the SEC recruit at a higher level than most of the big 12 here's here's what a bad SEC recruiting team ranks nationally they rank 50th in the country there you go so when we say Evander built bad they're better than almost everyone so they have better raw talent if you just look at recruiting rankings whatever you think of them they have better raw talent than Kansas State Iowa State Cincinnati Houston blah blah blah blah so yeah it's all we're this isn't Connecticut like you know like we're not playing Yukon like they've got some some athletes they're just they're they're driven by scheme though the offensive line by the way is huge yeah they do they end old so six five three thirty six three three thirty Center six five three sixty six three three twenty six four three twenty yep and they're all graduate or seniors yeah yeah Utah Mississippi State and Liberty and they are they're still not very good though so they get a lot of blocking help they're running the go go yes they are man you'll see the two backs to one side of the formation they're fun man they are fun to watch absolutely but yeah whenever I say their talent you know they need help on talent talent relative to the SEC not talented relative to call it football as a whole because they got dudes so I remember I did an analysis last year Arkansas finished second to last in recruiting rankings that year in the SEC they would have been second in the big twelve yeah it's that's the one difference we have to get used to is just like a little more time yeah we're operating on a different plane of talent cool I'm trying to think anything else to the offense no and the defense will be pretty quick so the defense whenever you think of like Vandy bottom feeder that kind of stereotype of them the defense that is correct they live up to that billing yeah it's there the whole reason that their competitive is their offense what's their defense it's in the 90s and FBI think yes FBI yeah they're 93 there you go yeah so defense is not very good there so they it's Clark Lee right he's a defensive head coach they run the 425 and it's too high safety's right so the basically the play they're trying to play complimentary with the offense they're slowing down that defense too right they're not going to give you the explosive so they're just letting you they just wasting time wasting time wasting time wasting time yeah and they don't create a lot of havoc they're not going to do a lot of tackles for loss so again I think we're going to probably if we give up any sacks in this game it's because the quarterbacks act themselves or someone you know one guy blew an assignment like probably a tight ender or running back they're not gonna swarm us so again if Texas looks clean on offense don't pronounce us healed we're actually playing one of the bottom tier defenses in the SEC yeah and they don't get interceptions no do anything to you they're counting on you to do something to yourself yeah the one thing they do that would be like considered trying to tricky is they they their whole philosophy is to blend coverage and disguise coverage but like we said they're not executing that at a high level but as far as reps for Quinn he needs more reps when they change the picture so that'll be cool so not a great defense let's look at rushing. Ponyon's per rush 74th in the nation you know not great rushing success rate a little bit above average so teams can consistently move the ball for good enough and then you can you can hit the explosive run on them as well so we need to see better running out of Texas period because that's to me that's why was them the first domino in the in the embarrassing offensive performance for Georgia so you know if we suddenly start running on this team like it's all solved no but we still need reps against live opposition and that's why it's going to be important so hopefully we can run the ball here effectively more vertical push to you know not needing as much outside zone and that kind of stuff would be ideal for me. Anything there Paul? No I mean the ideal game plan for this game is that we are able to run the ball and then set up a lot of stuff horizontally intermediate passing game play action wide open guys gunner helm on the move and then then you can start taking your deep shots because Vanderbilt will have to react to that at some point and you got to be good in the red zone because you can get if you can get points and get a stake yourself early lead on Vanderbilt that offense loses some of its superpowers. Will this be a good game to keep LaFalle at Mike and let Hill Rush handle the option? You know I love Anthony Hill assignment soundness is not been his main strength so I think anything you can do to have him see ball chase ball is a good thing but assignment assignments are going to matter in this game you can't just kind of do what you want. Yeah as far as like Rush sure handle the option you know the problem though fundamentally is the option is designed to exploit the athlete or run blitzing too much right yeah you're they're trying to pop you so yeah and if he does if he is assignment sound he's they're not even gonna go to him you know that's the whole point you know but if you're not assignment sounding you're trying to out-athlete the problem which you literally can't do versus the option then it'll be interesting to watch Anthony Hill versus an option team is all I'm saying this one thing you notice in our defensive alignments against OU we gave our linebackers a lot of space and distance from the line of scrimmage so they could kind of sit back and see things unfold and then fire. I think Anthony Hill struggles a little bit when you put him in more traditional deployments and and ask him to do diagnosis you need to ask him to missile seek I mean that's what he can do he's a heat seeker go kill the ball he's super instinctual about who's getting the ball and how do I get to them. Yeah but once you make him kind of sit back and do that that's where you start to neutralize them. Coach Dub so UNLV played Vandy last year so coach Dub is CJ Taylor has consistently been thank you for bringing that out coach Dub. CJ Taylor's consistently been their best player and he's a big safety almost hybrid linebacker who will absolutely come up and hit you and he's probably their most proven player year after year and they will run three high they'll run disguises as Connor was saying but they're not going eight-man fronts jailbreak blitz on us that that ain't that ain't happening if it happens it'll happen at once really that I don't think this is much of a hill game because they rarely pass you know so it's really it's just like he'll fit the be gap he'll fit the be gap you know that's this the whole point of this offense is so you can't use your superior athlete you know to go game wreck now where where you do get him is occasionally where that center messes up and Alfred Collins comes straight through the line and hits him on the mesh that's where you make your play here but it's gonna be tough the whole point of this offense is to keep you from making plays and to keep you off-balance. Well the irritating thing about Pavia is repeatedly see the defense guess right or a defender will make a great individual play he'll get in the backfield exactly he'll be at the exchange and it should be second and 14 and Pavia squirms out and he kind of dives forward and like drives his legs like he's shooting and wrestling and all the sudden it's second and seven. Well here's the thing too is Pavia doesn't have an NFL tangible trait he's not like a 4-4 runner his arms okay you know but it's just he it just it's all college baller dude yeah and so that's why he frustrates because Anthony Hill will have a sack on him and then the slow guy will do his weird like maneuver and you're like what is going on man like my powers to my powers don't work here it's it's pretty fun I'm taking the under it sounds like I don't know what the under is or what the number is well so Drew I hear you based on pace and off and that makes a lot of sense there's a world where our offense lights them up I know that's hard to conceive of after Georgia just worked us over like it was their job but they're defense if we've got good answers and we scheme it upright it's almost like if you could execute at a high level on offense they're kind of helpless there's not a lot their defense can do to you yeah and then similarly if you put Pavia in a game where he has to answer he typically finds ways to do so so you know it's just all game script man you got to tell me how well our offense does you know if our offense scores 31 take the under but our offense can put up something in the 40s I mean Vanderbilt will score enough to at least get the total up there yeah if we're able to do like quick strike stuff you know get behind them now they don't let you get behind them that's the whole point of them but if we're able to say like get in there media and then bond can get yak if you get up on 21 on Vanderbilt there's really this offense not built to play from behind they're meant to control this is the thing that should irritate us all if it's zero zero at the end of the first quarter like everyone like we're playing their game yeah exactly yeah we need it we need a quick strike and get up against them Texas turns this game to attract me Texas wins handle yes yes we would have to because here's the thing about our secondary that we know now for sure high IQ they don't bust assignments and they're versatile you can play different groupings you can play in different ways and there's no clear weak link right you can't look at a guy in our secondary and be like that's the guy we're gonna attack over and over and over and over that guy just doesn't exist this year so yeah track meets do not favor Vanderbilt unless they're like bringing back kick-offs or something crazy right yeah so defensive passing opponent yards for pass 87th in the country seven point seven surrendered per pass yeah that's not good man I mean right so Alabama lost that game y'all they averaged eight point eight yards per play yeah so yeah there so people were saying earlier like stats are stupid or whatever when you look at Vanderbilt sometimes some of the obvious that's our stupid because they don't reflect what's going on necessarily yeah the play style is so unique and in the mud it's not concrete opponent pass success rate 150 so you can nickel and dime these guys to death they are conceding the route and the throw if you can run the correct route the quarterback can throw the ball you can protect and they can catch it you can just move up and down the field on Vanderbilt that I promise yeah and then they're one thing they're keeping everybody back so they do a good job in limiting passing explosivity that's why your explosivity is actually gonna come from throwing in front of the safeties and then beating the safety opposed to just beating him deep and throwing it to them yeah yeah yeah um they're not good and standard down rate or success rate they're a hundred first in the country on third downs why because they concede everything because they're scared they will not so Longhorn fans you've long complained that sometimes we don't get up on people on third downs this is the this team would drive this defense would drive you crazy because even when it's third and nine or third and six they're still off they don't know where the sticks are yeah they don't care about they're giving up a 70 yard touchdown yeah yeah and it's so like it's just psychologically does not mirror their offense at all no offense is like going right at you their defense is like oh zoints I hope you don't throw it so early down CPA below average they're okay like right dead middle and red zone D they're trying to play Ben but don't break except they bend and then break but there was it just doesn't work what they're trying to achieve is just not working for them let's see all right in sax per game 2.2 so their sax per game are not coming from a dominate guy right it's not like somebody's doing it but like capers who's hurt had a neck injury but like he'll have two and seabricks will have two and Linus Zunk which is the best name ever awesome you know we'll have to and so how about this decosmo yep yep oh you want the most brutal one I still saying this from my breakdown you're in on Watera okay yeah and I and you also can't find it online so I was having to go to africannamepronunciation.com because they're the only ones that would pull up in search I guess this is the African name and I was having to like listen to whatever country it's from them pronounce it I love that Aeneas decosmo and Wallanon Gautara a core day sit-nor and Linus Zunk are playing next to Glenn Seabrooks the third and this guy's actually from Germany okay there you go and so but and then Nick Rinaldi he's interesting so he's a second string linebacker but they actually put him down to their like razor which is like their hybrid linebacker DN on third down situations he's a former walk on and I think he leads the team in Saks so they're not like getting Saks be like it's not Georgia right where like that you got to watch out for Mike L Williams it's just the left the left end will get you sometimes sometimes the tackle makes it through you know it's that kind of password situation I just think it's all covered Saks yeah it's gotta be I mean none of these guys are like going straight to the league type thing but but they got a guy named Linus Zunk I love Linus Zunk do you think he has a blanket on the field yeah it's a dude saying some of these names I was like damn that's the problem with these smart schools man they always have like this range of diversity that like their names are always so far ahead of like Thucydides Jackson yeah exactly Stone Blanton for like Mississippi State like the smart schools always have this plurality of like makes the names more difficult fumbles per game 118 but no matter what so they're not doing a lot of like they're not causing a lot of issues or have it like Paul said but because their offense does not turn the ball over that often they're still like 22nd of the nation in turnover margin yeah is a coaching cliche they are don't turn the ball over don't give up big plays don't commit penalties and you'll you'll be in every game yeah and it's true it is true every coach in the chat is like that's what I keep doing them no good special teams as well right 14th in the country yeah pretty good strength a schedule 30 seconds so yeah they played some dudes they played teams and they're low in penalties so once again coaching clinic right well I'd get to know that the I guess the the bow on the rapper on all this is this is a team that in the same season has lost to Georgia State and beaten Alabama no they beaten Kentucky and they've lost an overtime to Missouri yeah they have a whatever game versus Ball State because they're looking ahead they beat Virginia Tech and the opener biggest set of the of that opening week so yeah I they're just a fascinating team weird style of play and it'll be it'll be it'll be a it'll be a fun and interesting game to watch yeah you just do not let them drag you to hell do not play their gay style you know if it's seven three at the end of the first half like oh strap it we go here we go and that's yeah we got some other matchups to talk about after this we do all right win probability Texas is at 91% so so you're saying there's a chance dude that's probably is like 8% I like my odds yeah he's like perfect yeah this is exactly what we need so let's look we only have three because it turns out the more we play into the season the less of future opponents we have you see I wonder if we should just like kind of keep an eye on some of the programs we've already played if we think that they're playoff contenders or whatever yeah I have some information for you Connor other than Georgia the themes we've played before are not doing real well yeah it turns out that might be oh you wish you didn't wins lose their power every week yeah yep opponent games of interest are Kansas at Mississippi State Arkansas eight and a half point favorites Mississippi State man which scrappy dude they are dude and I think Van Buren is gonna be a tough quarterback here next year in the following year what do you what do you think of this matchup I would be you would be crazy to bet either side here Arkansas is clearly more talented more explosive but you can't trust him you can't trust him and then Mississippi State's so damn scrappy yeah I just and they're at home I mean do I mean they played the Aggies really well they played Georgia great mm-hmm guessing Georgia was playing Texas that whole week but still I'm just talking about physically you know in some ways they held up better than we did on offense just bit by scheme yeah they yeah that's gonna be a fun one I said dude to be first year your quarterback goes down you get Van Buren and now you got a nice little receiving core but Levi's punching I know that the what are they one in six or whatever but that's a damn good one and six given the given the circumstance yeah it's an unfortunate part of football is its binary your win and losses and it doesn't show your underlying level of play right yeah so if you're Mississippi State you keep covering lines against A&M against Texas against Georgia that that means something even though you're getting else in all those games yeah and then I think probably the most fun matchup SEC wise will be LSU Texas A&M Texas A&M right now two and a half point favorites yeah awesome game I look I think both people both I think people suspect both teams may have some pretender in them but it's not been evidenced yet fully or it has like look they both sucked in their opener right LSU got beat by USC A&M got beat by Notre Dame in their place and then since then they've done nothing but win and some of those wins have been less than impressive such as LSU barely getting by South Carolina with the help of officials A&M barely getting by Bowling Green at home but then they've also had some pretty impressive victories right yeah so you know LSU beat Ole Miss and frankly Ole Miss was the better team LSU just outplayed him down the stretch exactly yeah took him to deep water and drowned him and then Texas A&M I think you know had a pretty good game what was the most recent opponent they beat pretty handily before Mississippi State weapon went on Missouri right Missouri so yeah Missouri's got their own issues but yeah this is a like who's real sort of matchup and here's a weird thing LSU significantly better on defense since they lost Harold Perkins yeah it's weird they were it's like he was this weird crutch where they were having to like force him into schemes and it was hurting the rest of the day well like well he's this great athlete and he's a five star recruit so we've got to start him even though he compromises this this and this and he's not good against this and they get him off the field yeah they get him off the field they're like oh we're better now interesting yeah yeah that is an interesting thing what also thinks interesting about A&M right now we don't think there is good ours as tested right but still man the era of like first-year coaches being able to do stuff it's it's a thing now man it used to be like you got to wait to year four to evaluate and now it's like you're having coaches having these early success now of course you need talent right like at TCU you had a ton of NFL picks and A&M you got NFL picks so it's not like you're just gonna come in with unless you're Tim Beck on as OC but I think we're kind of moving past the era of like we need four years to build well the portal is short-circuited all that yeah I mean look Kurt Signetty just is proving that in Indiana he brought half of his James Madison starters to Indiana and then he retained the best players at Indiana and combined them and you realize hey coach them up and then you go get some key transfers like like Curtis Rourke from Ohio and you combine them all up and you're like whoa we're actually really good yeah it's interesting how the game's changing is is really interesting and then Auburn Kentucky Kentucky is two and a half point favorites this is gonna be a sketchy game dude if you if you pretend that you know either one of these teams and understand them god bless you you're better at this than I am yeah they're having a watch Kentucky versus Vanderbilt and just seeing that I'm like I can't get a read on these teams man well Auburn will lead late in the game and then they'll give it away in some improbable fashion but then Kentucky can't do anything in the offense they might get the giveaway and then punt like down three on the Auburn 38 yard line fourth and three they might run right yeah so I mean Kentucky got blown up by Florida yeah yeah Kentucky's a a strange team man there's just that offense is just gross man but watching them play Vanderbilt man for them to play the same style and try to go head-to-head in Vanderbilt wins that matchup yeah that was pretty wild dude like in Kentucky's the team with probably four or five NFL guys on their defense yeah yeah but they're like we're gonna these are both tough ball control teams and it's like Vandy just beats you at your own game that's pretty that's what I was interested I always like to see a ball control team play a ball control team because they're not designed to play themselves and say press a team that loves to press yeah exactly and you know there's probably some truth to that ultimately we've kind of broken down Vanderbilt and talked about Beck and Stowers Pavia and their philosophy and approach and all that stuff ultimately Diego Pavia transferred to Vanderbilt and I think more than anything has given them a will to win and I know that's okay it's true in this case it's true he's a winner and he imbues his teammates with wild overconfidence that they can hang with anyone and last year if you watched Vanderbilt they were just going through the motions at some point it wasn't just that they would lack talent or execution it was pretty clear that Vanderbilt players were like well we're Vanderbilt and we're on scholarship at a good academic school and we can use this for you know other stuff than football I'm an engineer anyways and Pavia came in it was like dude I made New Mexico's state a winning team I promise you you've got more talent in this locker room than I had in Los Cruces yeah so the guy's just a winner and a dog and that's really overdone and when people describe quarterbacks that way but he's that dude yeah all the corny takes of like they're just a disciplined football team or don't turn the ball like it's all true they're the examples that everyone is doing the corny stuff and Clark Lee was on track to be fired this year before season 2 yeah watching Clark's interviews he basically had like a come to Jesus where he was like what I'm doing is not working and he was like I just need to hire some putty bit because they got Jerry kill also being like a shadow coach up top so it's interesting he basically just said look what I'm doing is not working let me bring in some guys that can can do it and it's what they scrap their entire offensive approach so last year they were trying to throw the ball and they had three good receivers by the way all three of them transferred to schools that you know good schools that wanted them and basically they just come I mean I think Clark Lee just said Jesus take the wheel on offense like I'm just gonna go coach the defense and I'm praying you guys can work magic on the offense and it's happened yeah great them and he's responsible for the greatest win in Vanderbilt program history yeah so the body Sam we talked about earlier Diego trying to get in our head that's the biggest thing right so when I think Anthony Hill right Anthony Hill's chippy he likes to talk noise Bobby and Hill are gonna be interesting right like they were they're trying to draw flags on you they're trying to get you to play outside your character they're trying to get you to make the play and not be disciplined that's the trick because you watch it do Kentucky is getting furious Bama's getting furious they are messing with teams after the play is over and they are getting in their heads and it's working all right that was fun to get our heads in this live live live show well yeah we've we've talked about Vanderbilt here and then they're probably gonna make us furious because they're gonna keep converting and then they're gonna be talking noise to us like probably gonna hate you know God forbid but probably not gonna like Vanderbilt so much postgame but before you play them you can have a respect for their style like I said it's not a dirty team it's it's pure psychological warfare but it's it's gonna be a lot of fun man but this is the chance for us to get back on track doesn't mean the problems are solved but it does give us some confidence you know George is a good team but so world's world's not over after rewatch but we need we need a little pick me up 71 will feel a lot better than 6 and 2 and getting being another scalp on the wall for Vanderbilt so absolutely Paul thank you fans thank you we'll be back at 9 30 a.m. with Ian tomorrow until then hook 'em (upbeat music) (upbeat music)
Let's look at this week's opponent. Why are they claiming upset after upset?
