Individual results may vary. This is Dumpty Dum, a weekly podcast about the archers and the goings on in Ambridge. I'm Stephen Bowden, and right now, my priority is food. And I'm Michelle Wright, and I say my darlings differently. And then there's you, our lovely Dumpty Dummers, patronising and impertinent. Welcome to Dumpty Dum. A place to talk about the things that are happening in our favourite, Borsachia Village. This week's scripts are written by Daniel Thurman, who had to type out the word "darling" for darlings 26 times. Coming up, we have calls from Anna from Borsachia, who has enjoyed hearing about all the businesses in Ambridge and who has a plot prediction about one of them. Catherine, who wonders what is the point of Kenton and Jolene? Claire from Clapham, who is cheering Lillian on on Thursday. With a spoon, who has Dickensian thoughts about Justin. Catherine, who thinks of Justin is more like Joey from Friends. And finally, Ditzy of Dinington, who returns to the charge on Americanisms. And we also have an email from Gillian. Plus, we have a week in Ambridge from Sui, a roundup of the Facebook group from Vicky, and Tweets of the Week from Theo. But let's start by reminding ourselves of what happened over the last seven days with a week in Ambridge from Sui. Well, hello, lovely people. It's Sui here, Queen Nautar, and a roundup of this week in Ambridge. Well, it's been another week all round, hasn't it? And your too long didn't read summary is that Justin is a true pantomime villain, and that Lillian is promising to his come-upunts. Also, to point out, this summary is until Thursday night as I'm going to a wedding do on Friday. Justin has exchanged the cafe that Fallon thought she was moving into for a smaller one. Same rent, but she'll get a month free. I suspect she would have got that anyway for a moving in date, and Justin is rubbing his handsingly at the prospect of more money every month forever. Hands up everyone who thinks he's going to screw Fallon over further. He also reeled in brad to film the EV station, but not at Georgie's rates. Lillian found out and got proper cross about it. The kitten got a name, Tortoise, because she is a tortoise shell, chosen by Jack, Poor Beast. Also, at the pub, collector Wesley Hutchinson was taken round the cellars by Lillian Jolene to look at old ashtrays and some other random shatters branded tent. He would only deal with Kenton, and I have some sympathy with him, as between Jolene and Lillian, the darlings were flying thick and heavy. My lovelies, there's nothing wrong with the odd endearment, but they will lane it on with a trowel. Kenton then thrust a fine tin under Jolene's nose every 30 seconds until she's threatened to make things very unpleasant for him. The script writers suddenly remembered the real wilding. Haden's going to jush up the website. The lease agreement with the botches the land expires soon. Oh, nobody remembered. They agreed to meet with Stella first as she's looking after the BL environmental side. Justin came instead, and BL is crucial to the project, but Justin wants a solid five-year business plan. Kirsten rex wrote one to get the money off Peggy years ago, so maybe they should start by dusting that off. They feel the sword of dummiglies or of Justin hanging over them. Lillian found out and had a real hissy fit. There was cheering in the cheap seats as she's written to chuck him and reminded him that they came very close last year. He's on his final warning, I reckon. Harrison is fed up with doing paperwork, his priorities, felons happiness, and he's doing his best to support her in every way he can. So, felons get his screwed over by Justin, he's not going to end well. I kinda hope that Harrison's aggressive outbursts might end up with Justin into the patio. I think it's too late to put him in the EV charging station foundations. Khalil wants chickens, but Asbra is not keen. In a bizarre turn of events, Henry is going to loan Khalil hints at Hilda Ogden. And in her evilness, she will show Asra that chickens are a lot less bother. Let's not think too hard about the logic, we'll just see how badly that goes. His leaving date is the Friday when bonfire night is being held in Jubilee Field. Natasha wants to have a public ceremony to see her on her way, according to Helen. Is anybody else thinking of the wicker man? They may try for some restraint of trades stopping Fallon from baking her signature bakes. Oh, that's going to go down like a balloon. Harrison vetoed the public's beaches plan, and ambush would leave Fallon to say things that could never be on the set. It'll be interesting to see what happens Friday night. And of course next week, we'll just have to wait and see, I'll talk to you then. Thank you for that, Sui, and welcome to Dumpty Dum Towers, Michelle. Would you like to say a bit about yourself, your archers and Dumpty Dum background? I'll start with Dumpty Dum, probably first because that's the shortest. I think it's probably been 18 months, two years, because I've found the podcast just before you're about to go to Birmingham, so it would have been springing a couple of years ago. And I've got stupidly excited. I was like, oh my gosh, there's a podcast. They talk about the archers and they meet up in Birmingham. This is too good to be true. So the next time you go back to Birmingham, I'll be definitely up for that, because despite coming from the West Midlands, I don't actually go back very often, so it'd be great to go back. Much as wise, I have been listening since I was a kid theoretically, because I'm pretty sure my mum, like many people, had it on in the kitchen when she was cleaning up after dinner, and so I've heard it there. And then I've dipped in an owl. I remember a few storylines sticking out, I can remember Helen's eating disorder. I think I remember Henry being born, and I definitely remember Kirsty and Tom's wedding, because I remember Kirsty's scream, like anything, but, and you probably want to hear this, David. The storyline that really sucked me in was Rob and Helen, and I don't think I've mixed an episode since then, that was the one that kind of really hooked me. Ironically, my family left Wolverhampton nearly too deaf-haired to go to move to Worcestershire, so they've been that kind of trope of the Midlanders that move to Ambridge Country, and I went to visit them this week. They told me that they do have Apple festivals. I saw signs for textiles, I even saw a sign for a bridge farm, so it's definitely realistic, and sometimes when I go to the pub there you can hear farmers talking about tractors and shows and stuff like that, so that always makes me snuff, but I am always very happy to come back to the city. I'm definitely a city girl, because my sacknad always sends me down roads and grass growing up the middle, and that's not for me, not at all. That was my week, what about yours? Last week I mentioned I was going to make some kimchi, I made that on Sunday, and that has been sitting in its little kimchi fermenting pot since then, and is just now, as I tasted it yesterday, and it is almost ready, it's starting to get that slightly sour, fizzy taste to go with the heat from the Korean chilies, so I think this will probably have to go into the fridge tomorrow, and that means it's all going to be ready, and I will be eating it, so I've got the best part of three liters of kimchi to work my way through until I decide what to make next, which might be a Christmas kimchi with brussel sprouts, and I was going to say you're going to use it as Christmas present. I don't know how safe it would be, the trouble with kimchi is if you're not very careful, jars explode, or leek, or whatever, if you don't keep them in the fridge, so I think it might be a bit risky with this first batch, but if it's a success, we'll do it again. Otherwise, the most exciting thing I did this week was to buy some train tickets to a place called Sambellia, which is in Brittany, and is the local train stop for Jacqueline, because in about six weeks time, I'm going over to stay for the weekend with Jacqueline and her husband, because my local rugby team is playing her local rugby team. What are the chances? We'll see how that goes. That's probably enough about us, let's get on with the important bit, which is you, our lovely caller inros, and after the regular sound, we're going to hear from Anna. Hello, Jacqueline and Steven, and all Dr. Zamas all around the world, is Anna from Berkshire Calling. I'm calling off to choose this episode of The Arches, I have to say I've been loving it this week. The character, Wesley Hutchinson, was a delight. I loved how he called out Jacqueline's use of the word darling, as only his wife should be the one to call him that. I loved how Millian and Jolene were constantly saying it, and it was giving me the giggles, so I'm glad that someone did point it out, and it's been fun listening to Jolene try to stop the word. That was a classic, good, humorous side of the arts, which I loved to see. I also enjoyed this week, Jolene and Fadda's conversation about the EB station. It was very interesting to hear the mother daughter side, and have Jolene picking up on the business side of things. You're having a bit of a smaller unit, but yet you were paying the price for the bigger one, and hearing violence kind of critically, or perhaps, defence in response, very good to show back. It's been a bit interesting about other businesses too, and Justin, in his scrupulous ways, trying to get bad to give him practically not charge him a petty, and do that for free, and with the drone, and that's been quite funny, hearing how he operates and contrasts in that with Fallon, and then hearing Rex as well, and instead of talking about the rewilding and what they want to do with that. So I've been enjoying hearing about all the businesses and the direction it's going to go in, and that kind of triggered me to think about what I think is going to happen to the t-brips. So here's a bit of a plot prediction. I think that Ian and Adam are going to run it, so my two minutes are up, lovely speaking with you, and keep up the great work. I love the plot so much. Bye bye. Oh, thanks for that, Anna, and thanks for the lovely comments. Yeah, I've actually enjoyed this week too. I think I'd probably find it a little silly, but I think sometimes we need those weeks that are a bit more light-hearted after two pretty dull and depressing weeks. I really like the Mr. Chinson episode. Every now and again, we'll interject just a random character that comes in and never comes again. So I really enjoyed him too, and I did actually really listen to that episode and could not get over how many times they both said darlings, because I hadn't really picked up the first time round. The second time, oh my gosh, they were dropping it everywhere. Jolene, I thought that was really good, because you could see at the start her encouragement of talent. She really was being that motherly, she wants something positive for a daughter after everything she's been through. And Jolene seems to be something that doesn't exist in the arches this week, which is a person who is both a good person, but also a good business person, because apparently you can't be the two things at the same time, and it was the fact that she actually, the penny drop that perhaps this wasn't, I don't know, that the dream that Fallon thought it would be, and the way she really carefully guided her and made her think, "Is this really what you want?" I thought that was spot on. I think we'll leave talking about Justin, because Jolene has quite a few calls about him, but I love the prediction about Ian and Adam. I always think when they talk about Ian and Adam's business and employment, it's really, really vague. I wonder how they've paid for childcare, how they've paid for their house. It's always massively massively vague, and they made such a huge deal about how much Adam was enjoying making coffees. I mean, how much was he really enjoying that, and how he'd done like door step wedge sandwiches. They made such a big deal about it. I really, really think they were dropping that so absolutely agree, and I think he could be onto something then. I think it's going to be interesting to see how the EV station unit develops. I can imagine that right now it's just a very, very depressing concrete box, and Fallon was enthusiastic and said she got ideas of space saving and where things would go, and so on. I'm not sure how much she was really enthusiastic, how much she was just. I've made my bed, I've taken my decision. I need to make the best of this, and actually she might have been looking around the concrete box and thinking much the same as Jolene, that it's all a bit small and there's a lot to be done, and so on, and then we had that slightly ominous conversation between Harrison and Helen about not just the farewell celebration for Fallon on bonfire night, but about signature bait. I think that there is going to be a certain amount of bad blood between the two, because I can't imagine that Fallon is going to put up with that for a moment, and she's going to say that my recipe is I'm going to bake what I like, and if I bake the same things at the tier and well you're going to have to find your own recipes and replace them. I think that's going to be an interesting thing, I've been expecting that to be a bit of a story, and I do hope that her unit at the EV does become somewhere that people gather and talk and isn't just something that's out of the way. We've had other businesses which have been even further from Ambridge, because I believe that's on the edge of Ambridge, but within walking distance to the village. We've had places in the past like Nelson's wine bar, which is long before your time, and the Ambridge organics shop and Jack's calf, which I think was on the fortress to bypass. So there have been places where people have met up well outside Ambridge, so I think the EV charging station, which I think is on the edge of Ambridge, will have the potential to be exactly that sort of thing where people drop by and have conversations, so that'll be fun. But yes, it'd be interesting to see Adam at the Tiro, I'm just not sure Ian Walker for the Tiro, he's not really a baker or a cake maker, he's much more of a chef, he's a chef. Well, unless they do pizzas, they could do pizzas, couldn't they? Yes, but that will be then competing with his own van. I don't know how he has time to do anything, isn't he, an advisor at the Great Gagels as well? He's head of food or something like that, so yes, he's got a problem, and somebody's got to pay, they're not going to be able to make much money out with the Tiro. It did make me laugh, I laughed out loud when Helen had that bizarre conversation about Fallon leaving, and she said, "Of course you'll get a bridge from Hamburg, and to top it all a leaving speech from Natasha, well, if that's going to seal the deal about wanting to leave you, I don't know what else will." Anna really enjoyed all the humorous stuff in this week's episode of The Archers. I think we might be getting a slightly different view from Catherine. Let's talk about Jolene and Kenton. What is the actual point of them? So the wild dog thing in the car park, that's all gone for the moment anyway, hasn't it? And instead, we've got this ridiculously irritating, jokey competition crap. The cat's name, just choose a name for your cat, nobody cares, the regulars don't care, no one cares. Oh, and now this is my darling thing with that stupid, oh, I must have a little less negative. The bloke coming into value, the stuff, even I was noticing, why is she saying my darling all the time? I was thinking that was odd in the script, and then he went all weird like somebody might from 1943 about only dealing with a man, basically, because she was just annoying, and so then she signed up for this ridiculous putting money in a jar, so we're supposed to believe that Jolene's walking around her own home with pound coins, who has cash, pound coins in her pocket that she's putting into a jar willingly, although she's finding it annoying. So yes, Jolene and Kenton, very annoying. Can't they just go and do something pubby or interesting, just ridiculous. Anyway, the only time I did find them plausible was about the Fallon situation. I'm sure everyone's rigging up about that, about how Fallon has got basically a carcass of a building that somehow she's going to have to fund, and I do fear that this is going to end up with very serious results for Harrison, who's really near the edge of Kenton's aware. It's just, it's got a feeling of unease about where we're going to end up with Harrison, and I don't think it's in the divorce courts, I think it's far more serious than that when it all goes wrong, and my points about the vegan thing remain, but can we please stop the choky games? Very irritating. Oh my life, I just remembered, of course, the tedious cheese pie thing no one cares about, and oh God, what was the other competition they had? Oh, the oldest person in the pub, nobody cares. I have never been to a pub, and I like pubs, where they have these endless, dreamless, pointless competitions. Why can't they have the quiz night again, or something that's just less silly, right? I'm going to go and get a life. Thank you for that call, or should I say that rant, Katherine? I thought that was very enjoyable, it's always good to see people having a strong emotional reaction to the archers, it's what keeps us listening all the time. You did have one serious issue within all that rant which is about Harrison, and I do agree that something is going on there, that conversation with his boss, he's clearly not getting on at work, he really doesn't want to be back there at full time, and it sounds like it's a particularly stressful time with these riots in Felpashum, which isn't the sort of place you'd expect there to be riots and people setting fire to buildings, so on. So he is stressing out in a very unfortunate way, and I hope it doesn't end up with something too much like a breakdown, but I think as you suggest, it's more serious than just the relationship with Fallon, it's about his whole mental health and everything around him, and he does, I think, really need to get out of there, but is trapped by his commitment to go full time to support the EV charging station, that's definitely going to be one to watch. As for the rest, yeah, it can be a bit irritating when they have these funny comic storylines, and they do tend to come and go with alarming regularity, and they just, they're for a moment and then they disappear, and this whole business about the pub memorabilia, I remember the term that Brewer Reana, was that the word that he used, I'm sure there are people who collect that sort of stuff, and I like the idea of a Shire Horse Toby job. Yeah, it almost makes me laugh a bit with the bull, because surely, is it a captive audience who's at the right phrase, they haven't really got many more people that they can pull in, they've got regulars, I always assume that it's quite small, like, still haven't been to the place in Inc. Barrow that it's meant to be based on, so it's like, if anything, I would think that these constant things is probably going to put people off rather than make them want to go to the pub, although maybe they're just joking about what they're going to do next, but it does, I know it's made up, but it does seem kind of contrived quite well. When you actually list them all out like Catherine did, the cheese thing, all of the things they've done one after the other, Kenton does seem to be a bit of a figure of fun, then if we think about it, only a few months ago, he was on Death's door getting savaged by dogs, but yeah, it's a nice to maybe have that balance, but they can seem a bit dashed, some of the things that they do. Yes, I don't think we know too much about the pub, clearly, and tell, I think at weekends they get a lot of people visiting from outside, because you often have these conversations about tables where they don't mention who's sitting at the table, but they're quite busy, so I think those must be incomeers or visitors, whereas during the week I imagine that it's just going to be the people that we know and hear about, either the talking characters or quite a few of the silent characters are frequently mentioned as being in the bowl. Let's move on to our next call, and this one is from Claire from Clappen. Hello, Dad's Dumb, it's Claire from Clappen here. I'm calling in on Thursday evening to say, "Go Lillian!" I mean, Justin has really been particularly awful in the last little while, and I really enjoyed listening to Lillian tell him what for, and that he was a kind of unpleasant human being, and a massive turn-off. Good for her! He's entitled to have a business perspective, but he doesn't have to be one awful person to see, and nearly swore then. Yeah, really good to hear Lillian tell him so, and I hope she has to stick to her guns this time. I know there was miserable without each other, but I think she's perhaps learned that maybe it's just not worth the bother. I predict a future immediately in the sort of room of crisps at the bowl for her, and then maybe she'll find someone else to go. I don't know where she's going to go, though. Maybe she'll move into one of the other houses that's becoming late, and I'm losing track of who's going where. On the subject of which I do mean to promise to send you a sort of bit of a housing synopsis by email at some point, because actually, yes, I think Tracy went on to the tendency of the green, but I have legal reasons why I don't think that was probably possible, and concerns for her likelihood of inheriting the tendency when her dad dies. But anyway, I will email about those separately, maybe not this week from the time in the future. Keep up the good work, everyone, and speak to you soon. Bye! Yeah, thanks for that, Claire. I think we were cheering at the same time. I love Lillian. Lillian is one of my favourite characters. She's not an angel by any extent, but I always think whenever Lillian comes along, you know you're going to have a good scene, particularly if it's her and Linda. Over the last few years, I've kind of grown a bit where Lillian's been on the archers, because Justin follows her along, "I don't like him, I think he's horrid." So I've been thinking about why she's not kicked into the curb, and one thing I've really, really thought about recently is maybe it's because Jenny's not there. She was around. I am sure they would have been having lots and lots and lots of conversations about how much she was getting wound up with Justin, and I genuinely think Jenny would have probably given her the courage to finally get rid of him. But she's lost her sister, she's lost someone who is a massive support to her, so it would be a really, really scary thing for her to do to then get rid of a long-term relationship, and do sometimes wonder whether that might be the reason that she's hanging on to him, because he's her confident, because she doesn't really have other people that she can talk to as openly as she does with Justin. She did Jenny, so I think that's possibly one of the only reasons why she's not kicked into the curb before now, because otherwise I think if Jenny had been there, she'd have probably done it, and then had been celebrating with Jean too. I think that's a very good point. She does occasionally talk to Brian, and she talks to Tumi quite a bit, but I never think that their relationship is one where they can get into that sort of emotional stuff, and there's Jolene, of course, but again, because of the professional side of the relationship, I think it's difficult. So yeah, I do think that she probably is stuck without Justin, and she didn't spend very long between Matt and Justin, did she? She moved from one to the other, so I think that yes, she will struggle to be on her own. I just wanted to pick up on the promise we've had from Claire about stuff on property, and picking up on the budget of the last week and all the stuff that's been in the papers about the impact on farmers, because one thing I have said quite a few times before on this podcast is that there are huge questions hanging over the succession, the three major farms, and so we can now say after what Claire has said, we don't know quite how the succession is going to work home farm, that's probably the biggest question. I think it's Claire getting clearer what's going on at Brookfield. It's pretty obvious that Pip is going to take over, and I guess Stella will resign at that point from home farm, and they will run Brookfields together. I suppose it's entirely possible that Stella could run a neighbouring farm at the same time as owning or being in a managerial position within the other. Bridge farm, the smallest one, I think that's going to be just handed over to Tom and Helen jointly, but I think that's quite complicated there. And now we've got the added succession issue around number six the green, where Claire is saying that it might well be the case that when Bert dies, Tracy will have to leave, and that will then be a crisis at the other end of the scale from home farm. So we've got a lot to look forward to that. So we move on to this very familiar sound. Greetings, Stephen, Michelle, and all of them. They were around the world. It's with the Spoon and Angus Agassier talking to you from Germantown, New York. As I celebrate my 66th birthday, husband and I also returned from our visit to England, staying in Cornwall and London. Cornwall was beautiful, but driving those narrow winding roads in a large SUV was no fun at all, but I still posed better than being in a car with Justin and Martin Gibson. Speaking of Justin, I'm sure there will be many negative calls about him this week, and you can add me to the list. When he first arrived in the amperage, his reputation as a tough but successful businessman was established, but over the years, especially in recent ones, there has been a coarsening of his personality, and he has become one-dimensional. It was clear that Lillian would become upset once again when she found out about his conversation with Kirsty and the newly unearthed Rex. This was her mother's legacy project, after all. I do hope that Lillian kicks Justin to the curb, that that would only lead to him becoming even more Scrooge-like. Speaking of Scrooge, and the same thoughts as Facebooker Amy Elizabeth Tacker, the stage is being set for a real-life Christmas carol over the holiday season. With Justin as the aforementioned Ebenezer Scrooge, even more evidence on Friday with Martin Gibson assuming the role of Jacob Marley. Finally, I'm worried about my favorite person in amperage, Brad. Brad, you do need to learn to set limits with others and put your own needs first. I was surprised you agreed to take a day off of university and missed classes to visit George, and you should have just said no to the whole video PR business. And forget about the conversation in which you were bamboozled by Justin, but that goes back to Justin's skull-duggery. Anyway, talk to you soon. Thank you for that call with us, and happy birthday for last Thursday, Halloween birthday. I think we've danced around the topic of Justin, but it's probably time to take him on head on, because there have been three storylines, and actually Anna flagged all three of them up in which he has appeared that has been the business of screwing Fallon over over the EV charging station and giving her a smaller unit than she had been expecting. There's the renewal of the lease on the rewilding, and the hard line he's taking on what was never intended as a project that was going to make lots of money. And then there is the very petty driving Brad down into a really bad bargain on the video, and taking delight in doing all of that. So yes, Justin has been a constant feature through the week and in an entirely bad way. And then we have that interesting bid-odd business of driving back from the marketing event with Martin Gibson in the car, slightly inebriated, and falling asleep in the car breaking down. Yeah, it all did sound a bit as a set up for something, a redemption arc for Justin, but I'm not quite sure where it's coming from. He certainly isn't ready to be redeemed. I think we need a character that we love to hate, and I think we've found over the past few months that there's been more dimensions to George and there was a while when we were just like full on just absolutely hating him for his sugienistic behaviour and obviously for the horrendous thing that he did to Alice, but the way that they played it and the way that he acted it, it couldn't help but give some sympathy or at least feeling sorry for the decisions that he's made as much as he deserves to be where he is, although maybe you're not getting the treatment he is. So I think we do need another evil villain, and I think, you know, you can see him putting his fingers together like a Bond villain. He really has stepped back in at Halloween as this new kind of super villain and someone that we love to hate. Yeah, and on the Brad's thing, I completely agree with with the spoon, my heart breaks for him agreeing to all the things that George has asked, but you can hear a bit of a people pleaser and I couldn't see him saying no to anything having seen George in that vulnerable state. It does make me think he should have gone to university, he should have left, he wouldn't be in this situation, if he was far away, it would have been impossible for him to go there. So yeah, absolutely, but yes, away from our new villain. Yeah, I agree with you about having to have Justin stepping into the villain role because George is definitely being portrayed as somebody that we should be feeling bad about. And I think it's difficult not to give an audience going through nobody called in about that conversation between Brad and Ed and Ed's concerns about not telling Emma about what's going on there. But I can see that that is going to be something that we'll hear more about over the next few months, I suppose, well, George is inside and it's not going to be a particularly redemptive or edifying storyline, it's all very grim and I think the decision by the writers to put him into an adult prison rather than a young offenders institute, although there no cup of tea either, felt him keeps getting criticism and it's one of the few that there are. But Handale does sound like a pretty grim prison. The idea of good things going on and rehabilitation, not going to happen, I don't think. I did do a quick Google last night to see what a family member can do. I think Brad talking to Ed was actually probably the best person he could have spoken to. I think Will or Emma would have just had a massively emotional reaction. I assume there was nothing they could do but I did actually look it up. My algorithms will be going crazy on my phone now and a family member can make a request but it does need to come from the prison of themselves but they, it would need to go for the governor to make a decision but they do need to look into if someone is being bullied or if their safety is so imperiled and you could transfer prisons if that happened but I don't think it would be straightforward, we don't know where the way it is. Seems to be the majority of requests for transfers are if the person's not geographically near and they need to be moved to be in a near a prison but as we found out this prison is completely fictional we've got no idea where it is so I don't know whether that's plausible or not. No but I think that they would probably put him in the nearest place that had a suitable space. So I suspect there isn't really an alternative that isn't going to be further away so that's all a bit grim. Anyway, those are the first few calls and there's a couple more to come and an email. It's Katherine again. I hope somebody else has pointed out that the whole business about doing things for altruistic purposes, conversation on Thursday night is totally a copy of a conversation from friends years ago, quite a famous sketch between Phoebe and Lydeno someone else. So yeah, lazy script writing and how come Lillian, who's been such a cow herself, is suddenly discovering her conscience? Yes, I am familiar with that episode of Friends. It's actually between Phoebe and Joey. Joey's going to present a PBF fundraiser and Phoebe and him getting to a conversation about whether you can actually have selfless acts and it's all very contrived and all very archers like. So yeah, I am familiar with that. So I think it's just his selfishness. I think the Martin got it completely right. It's his reveling in being nasty and squirminess and kind of petty pinching that really is that evilness. I'm just in for someone like Martin, who's not a particularly likable character, pointed out, I think really, really hits the nail on the head. He's not a likable guy. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree about Lillian, who I love. He is by no means an angel, but I do wonder why they are together sometimes. I don't think she would revel in seeing people being, I don't know, tricked out of me, particularly people who are not as well off as Justin is. So yeah, but yeah, he loves it because he just loves being hard. It was intriguing that it was Martin Gibson of all people who was the fricking his conscious. I don't know what's happened. Has Martin Gibson been through some experience, such as change his view on the world? Because I think he was as bad as Justin in many ways, certainly when they've both been together on the BL board. And now suddenly he's decided that he's not an evil businessman and he's got a conscience and is sufficiently driven by that conscience to be critical of Justin. So it does seem an old development, but maybe we'll hear more about it. As with it being said, if we're going down this sort of Dickensian storyline and he's the Jacob Marley figure in all of that, that will give us some idea we might get a bit more background as to what has happened to Martin to make him go against Justin. Should we have our final call? And this one is from Ditzy of Darrington, who hasn't called in for quite a while. Hi, Dumpty Dum, Ditzy of Darrington here. I'm going to run in for a few weeks that I pulled a hat during this week. I've been building up to it since someone mentioned a couple of weeks ago about the fact that Eddie mentioned the word dumpster, which is such a American word that is not used in English and that in itself may be bristled a bit. And then a couple of weeks ago, another listener, mentioned about the use of the word here on in, which again, it's not used so much in English. But what really got me this week was when a doctor's son, I've forgotten her name now, and he said that he wanted a pet, but he said, "Mums said no to any pets, period. That is so not an English expression. The archers is quintessentially an English programme, a programme in mid-boysature, nobody I have ever heard uses the expression, period rather than full-stop, meaning no argument. And so on the basis of that, I felt that I had to contact you and say something. Like I say, the archers is a quintessentially English programme and there's so many more Americanisms appearing in it. The other one, which gets me quite a bit, is that people regularly refer to the archers as a show. It isn't a show, if you look on the BBC website, it's a contemporary drama in a rural setting and I find a lot of programmes these days are referred to as a show. Even news programmes, a show is different, it's just not the same thing at all. So sorry about that, round two for now, but I just had to ring in and say something about it. Okay, that's all for now and I'll contact you again at some point soon, bye. Thank you for that call, Ditzy, and thank you for a second rant of this episode of Dumpty Dump. I have to say though, I'm not entirely in agreement with you about the idea that Americanisms are wrong on the archers. Yes, it's an English village and there are people who have lived there all their lives and we can think about what they might be saying. But Khalil is a teenager who has just moved into Ambridge from somewhere else, I'm not sure exactly we know where, but it was almost certainly a more urban surrounding than the small village of Ambridge and the culture in which he will have grown up will have been heavily dominated by American things, American TV programmes, American films, Americanisms are creeping in everywhere and Eddie, yes, he's been a villager for and he hasn't been, he wasn't young and brought up in the city, but in his youth he was very much into country music and will have absorbed quite a lot of American cultural references and terminology and so on from the songs he was listening to and in the songs that he performed when he was young and when he first got to know Jolene, who also has a lot of American cultural influences around her and her ex-husband calling himself Wayne Tucson and they were deliberately getting all American. So I think it would be odd if everybody spoke as if they were mid-Atlantic or American, but I think that the younger characters in particular and some of the others talking about Americanisms, it's just the way the language is going and you talk about people referring to the archers as a show, well, isn't that exactly the point that a very English archers audience are picking up American terms as well? I agree with it in terms of if it would be Jill or Peggy suddenly said Harriet, that would just, that would feel very, very odd and jarring, they just wouldn't use those words, I feel it would be equally odd if someone who's, he lives what, 12 or 13, so it was 13 or 40, it would be odd if he was not using the terms that his generation used, he's me, maybe a couple of years older than my son, so much it's a lot of YouTube, lots of children and teenagers watch YouTube and it is primarily American, so they'll pick up those Americanisms and they've been creeping into the language for ages, I think that's when I was a teenager and we were watching Wayne's world and we used to finish every sentence with not which is a similar kind of period, it is just something, languages evolve and particularly younger generations are going to use that, so I think it actually gives that kind of authenticity and I think I might sometimes use a word 'period' matter. Yes, they've been influenced by all these influencers, many of whom are American because that's what influencers do. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, we all watch friends. So those are all of course, thank you so much for calling in, we always say the show is about what you the listeners think, so please do tell us how the week was for you in Ambridge and call in next week, now what about that email that we got? It comes from Gillian with the subject line 'Justin Darling' and it goes like this, 'Hello Michelle, Stephen and all the empty dummies', there's any conversation happening with Justin where he is not trying to gain some advantage, it's no wonder that Lillian has had enough of him, I have a different prediction, that it will be Zaynab or Khalil who will help Brad keep Georgie's business alive, I think it will be Zaynab who turns out to have the drone and other tech skills to keep the business running, looking forward to hearing the show on Sunday Gillian. Thank you for that email Gillian and that's an interesting prediction, my only worry about whether Zaynab will turn out to be a tech genius is that she seemed to have trouble keeping her scooter running and so I wonder whether the drone is going to be the sort of thing that she would get into but on the other hand it might well be and I think that it would give them something more to do to engage with people in the village. Zaynab and Brad did seem to get on very well when Zaynab turned out just as the tea room was closing, so I think there is a relationship possibly coming up there and then interesting and probably extremely awkward cringing and juicing episodes when Mia comes back from university in the northwest and so there has to be something that will keep Zaynab and Brad meeting up with each other and so yes I think that will be a very interesting and entirely plausible situation. I think Khalil is probably going to be tied in with Henry and the cat and the chickens and that storyline rather than with Brad so I think but yes a great idea. I love that the new entrance and more young people coming in because obviously we've lost George and also we've lost Mia too and Brad is really alone, we haven't had Chelsea for a while which I'm really missing Chelsea, I love Chelsea and it's one of those classic moments where when Brad's been having his moment when he's on his own you would think he might talk to Chelsea but they obviously can't afford to pay her, so she's not there. It feels really odd that he wouldn't have a conversation with her but that's where the archers is at the moment but yeah I do like that potential for them to have that friendship and I really like the idea of them helping out on the business side of things. I sometimes find it a little unrealistic that Brad wouldn't be a literal business savvy like when he's gone into conversations and he couldn't provide a quote immediately, I just think if he's a mathematical person who is nervous about an encounter he could seem doing his due diligence you know what I mean like knowing what the unit cost would be and the charges that he do likewise I think yeah having someone nearby who he can call on and talk to I think will be really really good yeah like right I think there are great new additions too and the archers. I agree with you on that thank you Gillian for that email now as we've mentioned a few times before patron backers of Dumpty Dum get an ad-free early release version of the podcast around 6 p.m. on a Saturday that timing isn't a guarantee as there may be weeks when other demands on my timing that I can't do the edit until a bit later patrons also get a weekly email about Dumpty Dum and the archers. If you'd like to join the growing band of patron supporters you should head over to patreon.com/dumptydum and sign up patron doesn't values you with emails or other messages and please let us know if there is anything that we can do that would make the difference between you backing us or not. All the money from patreon goes towards covering the costs of making the podcast any extra money will go towards a Dumpty Dum get together and the sooner you sign up to patreon and pledge a few pounds the sooner that will happen. And I wanted to say we are looking at organising a Dumpty Dum get together round about Easter time it will probably be in Birmingham it will probably involve a small fee but if you're a patron member you will either get it for nothing or it will be a reduced amount but we'll probably ask that you've been a patron member for the few months beforehand so that we don't just get people signing up for patron in order to get reduced price admission to the event and then unsigning immediately afterwards you don't have these things work. Let's move on to facebook and give a warm Dumpty Dum welcome to the following people who have joined our facebook group in the last week, Jessica Mitich and Tilly Abrahamson welcome to both of you don't be shy about joining in and never hesitate to start a new conversation and of course it is never too soon to stop posting call a rendering and email a rendering all in the same week. Now let's hear what's been going on for the Dumpty Dum folks group this week from Keats. Hello everyone this is Vicki calling in after Friday the episode although no posts yet about poor old Brad this evening and whatever was going on with Martin Gibson well guess who attracted the most attention on our facebook page this week yes it was the dastardly moustache twirling Justin and his sidekick Lillian he was mean to Brad and mean to the rewilding crew Chris Gibson asks what even is the point of Justin our Stevens said pantomime villain Shayna Hollander said a paragon of annoying behavior Chris Murray says to be the baddie our Jacqueline thought he reminded us what a muckly Lillian is Sandra more than thinks it's distasteful to have someone as allegedly wealthy as Justin chiseling a few pounds from his fellow villages however Kim Boja says she quite likes him the character has acted really well and that despite all his business acumen and entrepreneurial success he cowers like a little boy when Lillian is mad my favorite was raffy J who thinks he has progressed from being a meanie pants to a full on nasty pants there were quite a few nice gifts as well Lillian actually later in the week suddenly discovered his dastardliness and gave him what fall which got her you go Lillian from Darcy Jormensen Aaron Advark says shut the door on the dog house it'll be cold out there Kim Boja again with a plot prediction Justin's meanness is said that Lillian can dump him again which may then end up with lavish presents under the mistletoe on Christmas Eve I must admit I'd completely forgotten about all of that last year and Brian finding Justin a difficult house guess something to do toilet roll nor can I remember what he'd done that made Lillian so cross we weren't sure about monday's episode with Wesley the collector and the banning of the moy darlin's Victoria born Sam Wesley reminiscent of the Bernard Cribbins character and faulty towers and so did I there was quite a lot of discussion about his accent and again what was the point of Wesley Lily Claf thinks it was to introduce the silly darling challenge but also that he is probably paid much less than it was worth and that he insisted on dealing with Kenton as Jolene would probably drive a much harder bargain Rex is back Claire Boja wondered if it was a new actor but the consensus was that it was still Nick Barber but that he had a bit of a cold Tim Barnsley is wondering why the rewilding lot had signed such a short lease five years is nothing in farming rewilding could be a lifetimes work and in a full circle we come back to Justin because maybe he can now take back the land which will have been improved by its resting and that someone else's expense Joe Florak predicts that if Justin were to take the land by he could use it for a chemical heavy cash crop and what would Peggy say then well that's all for now bye bye till next time thank you Vicki and thank you so much to everyone on the dumb shit on Facebook group if you'd like to join them please do but don't forget to answer all the membership questions so that we know that you're a real person and if anybody out there would like to write us a review please do there's a link to instructions on how to do this in the show notes and if you can't leave a review or if you already have the other thing you could do is tell three of your friends about us even if they're not currently archers listeners who knows it might be the start of a long obsession now to Twitter where you'll find us at dumpty-dum make sure you include the archers hashtag using a capital T and A so the visually impaired who use screen readers can enjoy any archers based tweets as well as that dumpty-dum I can occasionally be found at Wenlock house and Jacqueline and Stephen can both also be found chatting about the archers on loose guide where Jacqueline is J Berto dot B Sky dot social and I'm at wenlock dot B Sky dot social now let's find out who has won the Twitter medals this week with Theo to eat wait push cat or should that be xx these days hello Michelle Stephen and dumpty-dum is everywhere it's purple pumpkin here with tweets and skits of the week this week Twitter and blue sky were not places that Justin Elliot would have felt welcome there was unanimous agreement that he is a grade A arse as Cosmo at Cosmo 100 said from the moment he illegally got involved in the acquisition of BL he has been a blot on the entire village and needs to go sooner rather than later Huggsy at Huggsy dot B Sky dot social doesn't wish it any one ill but could make an exception in Justin's case and Ninesy at Ninesy pointed out that Justin is a rat bag but to exploit Brad is a real new low opinions were more divided on whether as Viv O'Connor at Munster made said Justin and Lillian deserve each other both insufferable or whether she at least has some redeeming features the weird collector of pub finale and his objection to familiarity from Lillian and Jolene was not as far as I can tell to anyone's taste Matt at Matt underscore mark two asked was there a greater purpose to him or was it just for the sake of the rubbish darling storyline Gillie C L at Gillie C L pointed out that we still don't know whether he was just pretending to be an idiot while he ripped off Dozy Kenton how much did he pay we must be told and there was a political slant to the discourse following the UK Chancellor's budget and what it might mean for those aiming to pass on large farm inheritances to the next generation and he bannister dot B Sky dot social and Brenda Selwyn at Brenda Selwyn dot B Sky dot social were among those to ask what it will mean for Brookfield and home farm famous property guru Kirstie Allsopp at Kirstie M Allsopp also wondered whether the archers will record a special episode to reflect what the budget means to farming communities she wants to who was planning to hand their farm on and can they afford to do it now and wants to hear Ben archers view on all this as Rejoin a vermin at Remainer vermin pointed out Kirstie might or might not know about farming but she's definitely out of touch with the archers because Ben is training to be a nurse he'll probably be delighted with plans for more funding for the NHS there is a lengthy and detailed analysis of what the budget actually means for most farms and how few will now have a significant inheritance technical liability by Miles King at Miles King 10 which I commend you to if you want to get fully inside the story before the home farm crowd does but now over to this week's medals for blue sky skates and exposts all of which we continue to consider as Tweets of the Week. In bronze position it's Nick at checkyoursheds dot B Sky dot social once upon a time an episode heavy on Lillian and a kitten would have been right up my street turns out it's totally awful the silver medalist is Steffy Ead at Mum of Fat Cassie Hill why don't you just go and look after Josh's chickens you'll probably even get paid and the gold medal goes to Kate H at Rivercat 0338 dot B Sky dot Social Tortoise is a silly name for a cat they should just call it my darling and then the stupid challenge and on that rounding up note that's it for this week I hope to see you all on hashtag the archers on Twitter or blue sky next week thank you for that Theo and congratulations to all who are mentioned in this week's roundup and don't forget we're on Instagram @dumptydum please send any the archers or podcast relevant photos to the Dumpty Dum email and we'll publish them with credit to you and that's dumptydum@mail.com Jacqueline will be back next week and she and Steve are will be recording at a normal time of crack of dawn on Saturday morning so please get your calls in by midnight on Friday UK time as usual and as we come to the end of this episode we need to say thanks to all our wonderful contributors and to the team of Dumpty Dumas behind the scenes and we need to say a great big thank you to all of you who are listening to us too we love making this podcast and sharing our love the archers around the world and we must say thank you to Kim Darriman, Sonny Ormond for their voices and pay our respects to the creators of this podcast thank you so much for listening and joining us today we are now off to wait until six post Meridian which will we enjoy a weekend alcoholic beverage so it's goodbye from me and it's goodbye from me.
