I'm Charlie Hume. He is Smiley Kaufman. This is one of those rare weeks, I guess not as rare in the fall, but we don't have any major PGA Tour tournament golf to discuss, so to speak. Something we've been discussing for the last couple of weeks, really just this last show, this letter Camila Vijegas sent to the PGA Tour membership about these changing tour card categories, changing field sizes, something that's of real interest to us. We've talked about what the tour looks like going forward, and Michael Kim put out, as he does, a bunch of really cool and insightful tweets about his thought process and giving more information on these categories. Today, we're going to get an extended conversation with Michael about some of that analysis, talking about the state of his game, him being exceptionally open about those sorts of things, as he always is, and then very much looking forward to some of his proposed changes for the tour. I think he's got some good suggestions there, but before we get to that conversation with Michael Kim, smiley, we got to do a few housekeeping items here, just catching up on the state of our weeks, our golf games, and I just, you know what, you really warm my heart this week because I flipped on to social media and saw a little post with Francie. Francie's, by the way, excellent social media curators, she just, everything she touches on social is gold, but this one was the, I think the best Francie post I've seen because it was you, it was Francie, it was Anna Carter out on the old par three course at Vastavia, and you, you ace the hole in front of your daughter, and you got the little picture of all three of you holding up a one. I just think it's like, that was, that's a real golf social media moment tugging at the heartstrings. So congrats on the ace and well done to do with Anna Carter watching. I don't count aces on par three courses unless to Gus the national, or maybe another like really sweet par three golf course that maybe's a hundred sixty or it's all about, you know, the situation at hand, but it's a nice place to make that distinction. Yes, very few of us seem that well, you know, I don't count as it was, I guess the nationals par three. Oh, yeah, it was a first shot. So, yeah, it was number one, I hooped it. And as soon as I hit it, I said, don't go in, and it spins back in the hole. And Fran was like, pumped. I was just like, oh, cool. You know, I've made a bunch of hole in once on the our par three course, but she was like, like psyched. And so pretty cool that I can do that in front of my wife, you know, that she knows I can still, you know, like when I go out and practice, like, this is what it's for for moments like this. All of this, all, you know, going to see the dew sweeper shooting YouTube golf. And so I can make, you know, aces in front of you and my daughter. So now what was what was because Anna Carter now is she turns to in January. So not quite to yet, but obviously up moving around like she's understanding the world. What was her like reaction to all this stuff happening? Well, she didn't, I mean, I just told her I made a hole in one and she's like, Oh, like her facial reactions right now are so like so much fun. She, she's good about getting the ball out of the hole. She likes to do that. So I knew as soon as I got her on the green, I was like, Hey, dad, hit in the hole, go get it. And she ran right to it, got out of the hole and gave it to dad. So yeah, it's fun, man. I think, you know, you never know it to expect with kids. You just hear how great it is. And they tell you, uh, when you talk to parents how every year gets better. And I was like, I don't believe you. You know, the first, that first year, you know, you're just hanging on for dear life. And you're like, man, this is really cool. Like I'm a dad, like you don't know how cool your kids are going to be and like how they become a person, how smart they get, how fast they want to take on the world. And so when we have days like that, where she's like all in on the golf cart, all in on like doing stuff, the golf course, like, submit, are we going to do this? Like, like more? Because like, this would be a lot of fun. Like, first off, it gets me out of the house, I get to the golf course, and you get to come with me. So it's like a win-win. And so, uh, for somebody who like can't sit still, having my daughter be able to come with me to the golf course and, uh, experience, uh, holes in one, pretty fun. Very well said. We are proud dads on this podcast. In fact, I'm looking at my three week, three week old daughter sitting in the docket, hot over here in the office as we speak. It's the best. It's the absolute best. It's cool to share moments with that with them like that memory. So I got a question for you while we're on this topic here, be in dads. Are you, uh, having to subject yourself to any type of Halloween costume, being the dad? Yes. Yes. Yes. I'm so glad you asked. We've covered on this show before, uh, my son's obsession with blue planet two, the BBC produced documentary David Attenborough voices it over. Um, this has been maybe the greatest source of his vocabulary or it's like he's his vocabulary has exploded and watching these things. And we'll just sit on the couch for hours and point out all the different animals. And he has a very, very cute, uh, word for octopus. He calls it an apathy. And so sober. We're Halloween. Uh, we're doing a blue planet to theme Walker is an apathy. Uh, his, his little sister, Kadik is, we have a very cute clown fish onesie for her. I'm thinking that you'll finding me a little white stripes. Uh, and then, uh, are you going to be a blue man? A man is not going to, uh, this, this is a real inside baseball because, uh, I feel like, I feel like I feel like a blue whale right now. In fact, I feel like every time, every time, with every additional, uh, Culver's butter burger, I eat, uh, and every YouTube project we do, I feel like I'm looking at my waistline. I'm like, huh, wouldn't kill me to hop on the peloton once or twice. What? I'm not, I'm not going to be a blue whale. I'm going to be a very, uh, rotund shark. Uh, shark's got a lot of blubber on it. Uh, and a man is going to be a dolphin. So that's, that's the, the Hume household that's our movement to the costumes. What are, what is, what's the common household doing? Rowing this year. Okay. I should, it said blue whale or like a blue go whale. Is it a blue go whale? Is that what they were? Blue go. We have blue go. All right. What do I got going on? I am, uh, wearing tights. I'm going to be Peter Pan. Uh, so there's also a costume that I would not be one. I don't want to be anywhere near tights right now on the current state. So it is, this guy's walking around and green tights, but I think we could see there's, there's something through them. What is that? Oh, that would be, that would be his, that would be his butt. Uh, kids. He ripped his tights. Yeah. Uh, plumbers crack in a, in a Peter Pan costume, tough scene. Uh, what is in a trash bag of, of something? Yeah, brown paper, brown bag, trash bag, whatever. Um, she's a car tinkle bell. Take it. It'd be Tinkerbell. Uh, it's not tinkle bell. I don't think I said tinkle belt. That's a tinkle bell. We'll, we'll, we'll check the tape, check the table or do that tickle, tickle bell or Tinkerbell, Tinkerbell, Tinkerpig. So what, what is this brand Wendy? Yeah, she's Wendy and then, uh, Rosie's Nana, the dog. So, uh, you know what? We didn't, uh, wow, we didn't give costumes to our dogs this year. I wonder what, uh, wonder. Yeah, that's a tough scene for me. Poor. I mean, honestly, it's just like a mane for both of the dogs and call it a day. Yeah. It's in the, it's in the animal family. Right. What was this? They're dogs that are swimming in the ocean. They're like dogs that are swimming near us. Yeah. And we just say you went with an animal theme and they're just going to be animals. Yeah. You're really immersive on the costume this year. They're going to be, uh, they're going to be dogs. So, uh, man, well, there, there's a Halloween report. Uh, but listen, Smiley, I don't want to get too far off the golf path. So I've got big, big breaking news. I'm happy to report that for a second straight year. The Hope Valley, Thursday night, Minsley trophy is held by BF 3000, baby. Back to back champs. You get four of those things or is this like you pass in the cop? Is this your time with the cop right now? Yes. This is actually traditionally how we do it. It's a very, it's a Stanley Cup scenario. This is a second straight year running where, where this, this, uh, let's go look at trophy right here is made an appearance on the podcast. And so it goes to me first so that I can bring it on the podcast. This is after we had a nice little, uh, bottle of champagne. We drank it straight out of the cup last night and enjoyed that. Uh, so it goes to me first, then it makes this trip around to everyone on the team and then ends with our captain. Uh, we actually, we, we pulled, I had to look this up. We pulled a Walter Hagan. I didn't realize this because, uh, back in the 1920s, Walter Hagan won the PGA championship and took the watermaker, hoping trophy home. And then just didn't bring it next year. It's like, I'm going to win it again. So I didn't need to bring it back. And then he did. And, and he kept it and it all worked out well. So we did the same thing this year. We just did not bring the trip. We didn't give it back to the club all year long. We realized that during the middle of the match yesterday and, uh, we said, Oh, well, this is going to be a tough scene if we lose it, but we didn't. So we just got to keep it. And you know, now we're going to, we are going to turn it, return it in a little more, uh, expeditious fashion this time because we want to get our names engraved on it twice and really kind of already working on merch for next year. Congrats, man. Congrats. Thank you. You know, look, the, the tobacco road wind just really kind of got me on a roll. Good vibes. Now, now, you know, second straight win for me. What's next? You know, I don't know what, which shout out to the BF 3000 boys. Shout out to all the, uh, all the people at Hope Valley, who just, you know, got to witness greatness. And many people are saying maybe dynasty happening. I want to come in hot next year. I want to like have a discussion and we're not going to do it. This podcast is we got got to get to this interview. But on a what's like works that you're at your club. So like men's league, it works. It sounds like it's really great. It's all club. I'm sure there's a lot of other, uh, cool things that other clubs do with their, I don't know if it's a league or other things that, uh, keep people engaged in having fun, uh, to where they get excited during the week. If they're not making fantasy trades while they're working, they're thinking about doing this at the club. So I think that's a great call. What we should do is if you're watching this on YouTube or even if you're listening to us on the podcast, go to the YouTube and put in the comments, the things that you like at your club because I love it. We'll talk about it. Yeah. But men's league at Hope Valley is amazing. Look forward to it every week. As you well know, uh, I've recorded, actually I've recorded a podcast on the show in route to a tee about to offer hope for men's league one night. So it's thing that I love dearly. Shouts to all my teammates. Big dub this year. We're going for three next year. That's been my men's league report. Uh, I can't wait to annoy you with the next one coming soon. So well, without further ado, is that yeah, is that Michael Kim? I think that's enough filibustering. Uh, really excited for this interview. Uh, and let's get right to it. Michael Kim on a number of different things, including the proposed PGA tour card and schedule changes upcoming in 2026. All right guys, welcome back. Uh, we got Michael Kim joining the podcast. Michael, thank you for joining. Uh, we've got all the headphones, the technical stuff figured out. We're ready to rock and roll and Michael, I was in the booth at the Shriners this year and you're making a run on Sunday. I'm like, okay, he's, he's going to post and we'll see what happens. But then we get to AT&T and I was like, the only thing you can't do is hit it left. And I was, and it, watching you hit it, I was thinking, Oh my God, you just hit in the desert. Did you think you hit in the desert? Just I had to ask you this a hundred percent. I thought I hit it in the desert. I had, I had been struggling with, especially with that, uh, with my three, three would end driver, I've been struggling, like hitting kind of these pull hooks. And, um, I had been managing it the entire week. And literally that's like the worst hole to hit a pull hook on. And I, I'm pretty far right. Um, almost like kind of on the right side of those big bunkers. And, um, and I hit it and I see it and it just starts way too far left and it's drawing. And I'm like, Oh, no. And then, um, cause I was hitting through it. If I had it been hitting, if I had to driver, it's a, it's a bit more of a carry as it goes along. So I might have been, might have felt better about it. But this through is kind of, it's also an altitude. So slightly. So, you know, that ball is not spinning as much. It's not hanging in. And I see it, I see it bounce straight. I'm like, I saw a bounce. I saw a bounce and, um, and I was walking up there because you still don't know if it took, you know, if it got far enough or it went back in and, um, I saw it in the ferry and I was like, Oh my God. He's in the mayor's office. And you just had a wedge left to that back fin. Yeah. Went on to shoot 62 on Sunday, finished T five still a great week, especially with where you are in the FedEx cup and, uh, quick, quick side note as I was playing that hole. So on 17, um, also I'm just, I just hit this week fan of a shop. Right. Yeah. Right. It's just an ugly golf shop. I'm just like the most anti trouble shot you could imagine. And I make a good part, but for par and I'm walking, it's a short walk from 17 to 18. And actually, um, like, I'm not just saying this. I didn't even know you were in the booth, but I was like, you know what? Smiley made birdie the year he won. I remember the pot you made. It's like kind of like, like a 25 30 footer from the back to the left and pin to, um, it's slightly different. The, the year I, the one I, um, this last week, it was, it's kind of further back, but it was further back. It was further back. Anyway, so I'm like, you know what? You know, smiley kept, kept pushing, kept making birdie on 18. I was like, I'm not, I'm not going to play safe. I'm, I'm going to go after it. Um, that thought really actually crossed my mind. I was, I was playing the whole, how about that, Charlie? We got, we got PGA tour pros, just, you know, just reminiscing on the 2000s. 2015 show. It's the open of the show. Smiley common for 61. You know, you love to see that it still rings true and, and the minds of tour pros out there. And I saw a tweet, Michael of yours. What happened? Did something weird happen in your hotel room that morning? Like a broken glass or something bizarre that now might become a tradition of yours future. Yeah. Um, I was in my hotel room. Um, my flight was later that night coming back to Dallas. And so I had to pack up. Um, before I was going to get on the flight, and like, I forgot this glass bottle even was like in there. And I was opening up my luggage and like, I got a small like paper cut on my finger. And I was like, that's kind of stupid. And then as I was closing my suitcase, like this glass, tiny little glass jar, like, flew out the luggage and it hit the floor and it like completely, and not completely, but it, it went into pieces. And I was like, I'm literally going to shoot 60 or 90 today. I don't know which one it's what it is. And as I was playing, I'm like, I guess I'm, I guess it's the, it's the, it's the matter of it too. So, um, now I was kind of after the round, I was kind of thinking, I was like, maybe it's like, needs to be a ritual thing. Like, yeah, it made your lead where you just, you know, do some, some weird stuff. I just shatter some small glass or something. Yeah, it's, it's like you're heading to the golf course and you haven't, you know, all week, you've been catching all the lights and on Sunday, you leave maybe like 10 minutes later and then you get stuck in weird Sunday traffic, you hit it every bite. And then in your warm up, you just can't fight, find a way to hit a draw. And then you get to the putting green, you hit that three footer that you hit before heading to the tee. And you simply cannot make this three footer. So you're like, you know what? I'm just going to go to the tee and see what happens. And that seems like that's where your head was kind of going into Sunday and 62. So it hit. Some, you know, I remember losing, I didn't even have like that grade of a warm up that morning, but you know, I've had plenty of good and bad warmups lead to lead to good rounds or bad rounds. So, you know, you try not to take too much into that and kind of go from there. And Charlie, and this is what we do not do. We do not, we do not miss cut shame on this podcast. And we definitely do not miss, we do definitely do not shame of shots that are offline off the tee. And so, or anything that goes to the right. Hey, I mean, you guys know, like I am, I am full of board with that. We were coming off a YouTube video, Michael, where Smiley had a Haya counter and I had a shank counter. That gives you any indication as to where we are with our golf games right now. Man, it's, uh, that, uh, that Haya can, uh, can come out of nowhere. It's, it's, uh, it's not a good ceiling. Well, Michael, bring it, bring us a speed on your golf game. So we, we've, we've seen the turn around. We know where you're sitting in the FedEx cup. You've made some great strides with Shawn Foy. I love the way your golf swing looks now. Uh, looks like you're comfortable in swinging free. Just give us kind of, uh, what you've been working on and where the conference level is. Yeah, it seemed like this entire year, um, where if my ball striking was on, my chipping and putting wasn't on, if my chipping and putting was on, my ball striking wasn't on, um, and kind of throughout the year, you know, you, you make, you know, you make minor changes here and there. Um, and they had been kind of working and not working. And I, I felt like I finally got into a really good spot. Um, kind of starting just before the Utah event. Right. Um, and then I, I actually, um, changed driver a little bit. I shortened it by like half an inch, um, to see if my dispersion, um, went down a little bit. And I felt pretty good, but I was still hitting, uh, a couple of those big pull draws at times. And so JJ, um, um, um, fed her for tireless. We put a little tape on the toe, you know, see if that helped things. And, and that was like a really good adjustment. I, I noticed it was not, you know, curving to the left as much. And, and, you know, at Vegas, um, you know, it was, what was a huge help was I got a, a really good draw. Um, you know, heading in, you know, the weather was going to be bad that Friday. And, and, you know, you get the tea time, we just kind of hoping for that. You know, I think it was the early Thursday, late Friday, tea time. We talked a lot about it. Oh, everyone, everyone's, everyone's, you know, waiting for that message. It's like, all right, what's my tea time? What's my tea time? And, and, you know, I got, I got super lucky with that. You know, like Friday was, I guess, well, the big, big difference was on Thursday, which was surprising. Friday scoring averages were pretty similar, but it was such an interesting day. Like, I drove the first green, which I never thought. Yeah, I too put it. I had a 35 footer for two on one. So that was, that was pretty neat playing, playing that course in that condition. And yeah, it just, just kind of all came together, luckily on that Sunday and the entire week. I'm now recalling Michael that you were one of the few that were calling for guys to go out on, I guess it was Saturday or Sunday at the AT&T and just hit balls on seven at Pebble. So this is kind of like, this is kind of in your wheelhouse, like this, these conditions were something you, maybe look, we're looking forward to. I mean, it's funny, like, you know, when you're playing the tournament and you see like crazy wins, you're like, we can't play. This is, this is insane. Like golf balls are rolling up. But then like, Charlie and I play that day. Actually, we played Pacific Grove that day. Oh, they do. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Oh my gosh. Yeah. But then when you're like watching, you know, I was at home that week and you're watching like, these guys should be playing through anything. Like it's a signature event, like your, your opinion changes as, as where you're kind of, uh, well, Michael, you're, you know, Haskins award winner. You're an absolute stud as an amateur. And we're going to get into a conversation later in this episode about just all the proposed changes that are coming from the pack. But I want to start us here in the fact that you were the top enter. You were the guy. And now we're in a world in which if you were the top guy, we got a Jackson Coiven, Woo Bigo Bird, Davis Thompson. Um, I'm sure there's some Gordon Sergeant, uh, these types of players now, they're giving opportunities to go straight to the PGA tour. And we've seen success with some guys, but, you know, over time, eventually it's going to be, you know, it's hard to, you know, play on the PGA tour and especially with how difficult it is for you back when you're in college. Do you think you would have been ready for that opportunity to go straight to the PGA tour? Or did you feel like the corn fairy tour was a place that was probably where you needed to be? Um, so I had a really good sophomore summer and that kind of, that's when I won, you know, the Haskins Award and whatnot. And I played really well at the US Open, but my game was not in a great shape my junior year, the year after. And I kind of squeaked by Q school and, and then I turned pro, but I definitely, if I had gone straight to the PGA tour, I definitely would have probably struggled. Um, and I struggled a little bit in the beginning part of the, of the corn fairy. Um, well, it was the web.com at that time, at that time. Um, but I definitely, you know, struggled and, and I was only able to, able to keep my car that year because I finished second at, um, at Springfield, Missouri, which is kind of pretty late. You finished second there? I finished second there to Cam Percy, I think. Well, well, well, well, which are we, we got two second place finishers from the, from the Springfield, uh, price cutter. I think it was. Price cutter. Yup. Yup. Um, I lost a Davi Vandervault. Okay. I like 2,100, 2,200. Yeah. At least I'm sure. Um, but you know, back to your question, like, you know, I see these guys like Luke Clanton or, or Ludwig. Um, and these guys are just bombing it. You know, they've got that, you know, they've got that innocence where they haven't seen enough high yaws. Like we said, they don't know. They don't know. And it is, it's awesome to see, but also at the back of my mind, I'm just like, wow, I mean, I'm competing against these guys and these guys just, you know, have no fear. They're just full go. They don't care. They, they just, they just, you know, are playing such great golf. And it's just like, man, like, yeah, I have a better perspective of things of like, you know, I'm, I'm probably not going to be able to play that free. Like they are, um, maybe like ever. And I've kind of accepted that. But I also, I also know like, you know, I, I know these courses a little bit better. Like I know, I know how to handle these situations, maybe a bit better. So that's kind of where I felt like I might have an advantage. But man, it's, it's, it's these kids. I mean, kids. I mean, they're like born in like 2000 sometimes. And, and they're, they're amazing. But I certainly think I would have struggled coming to the PGA tour right away. I definitely needed those two years on the corn fairy. Well, Charlie, this kind of reminds me of the Curtis Strange interview with Tiger Woods. You'll learn. You'll learn. You'll learn. It was, it was said so, you know, kind of brash and Curtis was a fantastic analyst. And he will always be remembered for that interview in that moment, because Tiger Woods went on to be tired of if the not greatest golfer to ever play the game. So it just was a tough scene. Yeah, that was, that was one of the worst times to drop what you'll learn. You get that right. Maybe nine out of 10 times. Tiger, not, not the one you want to drop that on. So Mikey's trying to, yeah, these kids learn eventually the scar tissue, like just a little by little add up. But even like, you know, it's like, I like Rory with how he's, you know, struggled in, you know, the last few years on majors, like, you know, like how he was playing when he was winning at like Valhalla or, or wherever, you know, just, you know, you could so see that he had that freedom. And, and it's almost like we all search for that freedom again. But it's like the more you try and search it, the more it like runs away from you kind of thing. It's kind of, it's kind of weird. But you just, I've kind of accepted that like I, if I get it at times, it's great. But I'm not always like searching for it all the time. Well, that's, that's such a great thing for, for any player to listen to this, whether you're an amateur, whether you are a college player, if you're a junior golfer, I mean, freedom is something that we just strive for. I heard Jordan speed talking about it, not only on our podcast, but just in interviews of, of just trying to chase freedom, which in our minds, I think people, other people that think it's perfect, we're chasing perfection. Now we just want to be able to get over a shot and know how to do it and not have to think about how to do it. And I think that's where people get off sometimes is that, you know, you're working your tail. If you're working your tail, if you just want to be able to wrap something out so many times to where, hey, it's, you know, I can just literally turn my brain off and hit this shot. But how, how often do you think Michael, in a, let's say over a three week stretch, do you feel like out of 12 days of golf where you would generally have freedom the entire day? I mean, oftentimes like zero times in three weeks. And even when I was playing great on Sunday, it was, it's, you know, at times I don't feel 100% comfortable and I don't feel 100% free. And, you know, I've been working with the sports psychologists and it's just like, I've been trying to be better in, in chaos, as opposed to I'm, I'm trying to find that perfect freedom. And it's like, as you get better at playing through all those nerves and anxiety and you're, you're okay with those, with those emotions, then you're acting your brains like, then it actually kind of relaxes. But like, when you're searching for that, like, perfect freedom where you just step up there and you're just free-willing it, like, if you're searching for that and it, and it doesn't come right away, then it's like, oh, no, I shouldn't be feeling this way. And it kind of, it starts, it starts as like a negative loop, if that makes sense. Well, you and I can relate to it. And, and by the way, we do not miscut shame on this podcast. We're just going to talk about experiences. But let's just briefly talk about it before Charlie sets us up on what we brought you on here, which is to talk about these proposed changes. But when we talk about going from week to week in a miscut and then the next week, and you're trying to attach a Band-Aid, but like you said, you get to the first T and you might be okay through three or four holes and you're like kind of piecing it together mentally. But as soon as you see one or two, a couple shots go the wrong way and then you can't quite figure out the feel, it's crazy to me how quickly your feel and just creative juices just go away and your brain just says, you know what? All right, we're going to shut off the rest of our, our motor, like our motor functions. And when you're just basically going to be swinging with a noodle the rest of the day, and we're going to turn our brain on. And that's what it felt, always felt like for me, I'm not sure if you're the same or you. Yeah, just like, you know, it gets in that fight or flight and your brain is just trying to survive the day, you know, you're just so instead of, you know, say if there's, for me, if there's trouble on the right, that automatically is like, it was like a, it's like a red warning, like warning, don't, don't hit it there, don't hit it there. And it's just like, you know, how are you able to kind of really try and hit the shot you're trying to hit, or are you trying just not to go right? That's like a big difference, right? And your brain is just, it's like screaming, don't go right, don't go right, don't go right, as you're kind of, oh, you're, as I'm swinging, like your brain wants to go, don't go right, don't go right, but you know, you need to be like, okay, I know I shouldn't go right, but I'm still trying to hit this two-yard draw off that tree. And you're just kind of trying to kind of get that picture in there, as opposed to the, to the bad stuff. And you got a lot of pictures, yeah. You should see all the photos. And you know, sometimes like, I'll be thinking, don't go right, don't go right. And the ball, you know, sometimes still goes straight. And you're like, oh, thank God. That's a surprise for the next shot. Exactly, exactly. So it's always, it's always, you know, it's always a tricky balance there. Well, and Michael, we will get to, as promised, these proposed changes. I promise you're going to get there. But I do just want to piggyback on that in one additional way, which is, all these things are, of course, thoughts that go on within our minds. But most of those thoughts for, for a lot of tour pros, they stay there. You take it one additional step and you have this amazing willingness to be open and transparent and put this on X, you know, or Twitter. And this, you know, started some time ago where you were just kind of putting this out a week by week checking on the state of your game, other thoughts that I know for us, you know, it makes producing interview heck of a lot easier. It's just all right there for us to take the information and ask you about it and kind of, you know, wearing your heart and your sleeve in that sort of way. So I'm curious about that in the context of the way that golf content is sort of changing. You know, we're seeing new types of rising stars in the space, whether it's the YouTube space, the creator classic is the thing that tours doing. And so just retracing your steps to when you first made the conscious decision on Twitter to say, I'm just going to put all these thoughts out there and take people along on this journey with me. What the initial impetus was for that. And then now, looking at how far you've come on that journey, how many additional followers you've got and the appreciation for it, thinking about yourself as not only a tour pro, but what possibilities lie in the now and maybe even the future because you've been willing to make yourself open like this and take on this additional sort of place in golf media. Yeah, you know, when I first started, I just like, I'm on the Cornfairy tour at the I was at the corn I was on the Cornfairy tour at that time. And I think it was in the off season. And I was like, you know what, I got rid of my Instagram. And I just, you know, might as well put something out there and just just see where it goes. And I was like, I'm just going to do it. I like to be somewhat scheduled. So I was like, you know, I'm going to do something every single day, whatever it is for maybe like two months, and we'll see what happens. And it kind of picked it up, picked it up. I think, you know, part of it, I've accepted the bad and the good. You're going to have to, right? Yeah, and like, you know, like, everyone can see my results from that from from when I was really struggling. So you know, I I had accepted that. And, you know, I and along this bad and up and down journey, I had seen a lot of different coaches and picked up a lot of different things from from all these great coaches. And I felt like I could, I had something to share. I knew more about the game than than even like maybe some of the other guys on tour where they just had kind of smooth sanding the entire time. You really learn about I feel like yourself in the game through through those struggles more more than when you're just playing really well. And so I felt like that I could share and, you know, like fans these days are way smarter. There's podcasts like your guys's or whoever's talking about the game in such a detailed way that I didn't want to be like the the stereotypical just like taking a picture of the tournament logo and be like, oh, I'm at I'm at travelers this week hoping for a good week. Like, I definitely didn't want to do that. So, so it's and then I was like, okay, what can I share? And then and then when I started, I had a lot of things to talk about, you know, about my swing, about about some of my thoughts. But now I've been doing it, you know, pretty religiously for for two two and a half years, I think. And you're running out of content. Now I'm like, really running out of content. I'm just like, you know, now I don't know. Like, I used to have like a bunch of stuff on drafts on my drafts, but like, those are running out. And, you know, you only have so many stories to tell. So, I'm struggling here and there. But that's great. Trying to find things here and there. It definitely takes a lot to accept poor boy. I know it took me a long time to finally get over the hump of just whether it be embarrassment or just pride, all these sorts of character flaws I was dealing with at that time with with this stupid game. But it's more fun when you get over it, because you kind of take off much more lightly, which, which by the way, Charlie, let's let's get into it. It's time. Well, let's get into it. We get to it. Absolutely long enough. We were right. We're going to talk about it. We can't tease it. And like, we're well, we really is. We can't afford it. So, and actually, this does kind of go back to what I said, because we were thinking, well, who should we have on to talk about this? We we this has been twice in the history of the show, Michael, where, like, hey, we need someone really smart to come on. Like this was it was the the you guys bring me on. There's like some serious thing to talk about. It just talked about golf. Let's get the Cal Berkeley guy in here. Let's get the smart guy here to make this make sense for us. And so this was as we covered on the show before this was this was a letter that Camila Vijayga sent to the PGA tour membership. I was reported on a number of different places, but some changes that could be coming, not in 25, but as early as 26, I believe. And so, I want to start with kind of just the main headlines. There's a lot of a minutiae we can get into, but just the main headlines for you are the maximum number of players in a full field event goes from 156 to 144. But there are a number of different circumstances where that number moves down to 132 or 120. I think that's mainly a pace of play thing trying to get done on time because I don't have the exact number in front of me here. But I believe there was a study done that showed that 26% of the time of these full field events, the day of play did not finish due to darkness. So that's one large headline. Second one is reducing the number of PGA tour cards for guys with full status from finishing top 125 at the end of the FedEx cup fall to top 100. And then the other impacted categories in terms of earning a full PGA tour card would be coronary tour going from 30 to 20. The DP World Tour would continue to get 10 and Q school cards would be capped at five. So here's why I think we saw Michael is that you were, again, very honest and divided in this. He said, subjectively, here's how I feel, but objectively, here's how I feel. So if you can just kind of run through that for everyone who has a senior tweet. Yeah, you know, like subjectively, just, you know, coming from my perspective, I'm kind of thinking like, man, that's, they're just, they're cutting 25 jobs is kind of how I, it feels right now, or at the time. And a little bit still right now, but because, you know, I'm, I'm like 115, something like that on FedEx Cup right now. And now is one 129 or 130 before Shriners. So like, you know, I know I'm, as long as I play half decent in these upcoming 30 weeks, I know I'll probably have my tour card for next year. But, you know, if it was 100 card this year, I would still be really, I would have to be really fighting for, for that PJ tour card. So, you know, when, when you're, when the job security meter falls down by a lot, you know, in that sense, like, it's all, it's obviously kind of like, man, like, that sucks, like, and it's obviously the guys on the board, like, they're not really, like, let's be honest, they're not really thinking about, you know, it's not going to affect them as much as it is going to affect me. So automatically, you think, you know, like, oh man, these guys don't really care as much about, about guys like me, as opposed, they just want smaller fields, you know, signature events, and that's kind of where your head automatically goes to. But then, you know, you kind of take a step back and kind of really read through it. And, and, yeah, everybody had been complaining about, especially the Cornfairy tour guys, they, they weren't getting into enough events. They weren't, we weren't finishing on time. I mean, if you play the Sony Open that first tea time, I mean, it is, you can't say anything. I mean, as soon as you're, you might be able to see the ball on the first tea, that's when that's when you go off. It's crazy. But, you know, guys still don't finish. And everyone had been complaining about, you know, rounds don't complete on that Thursday, on that Friday, they have to come back early. And, you know, Michael, the, the Sony Open, I've been that first tea time and UT off on 10. And then you get to 11 and you cannot see the green because the sun is literally on the pin. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. I remember every year, you, you know, you get that one of those cup first couple of tea times. And it's like 30 minutes to go. And it's still pitch dark. And like, there's no way we're starting on time. But as soon as you even get like a tiny peak, like we're off. But, you know, that, that had been a complaint. And this year when, because the season started at Sony instead of in the fall and years past, like these corn fairy guys really struggling because they're, they're not even close to getting into Sony, I think, unless you got an exemption, they get it. They some get into Amac some get into Tory. And then it goes, you know, like you're not getting into waste management, you're obviously not getting into AT&T. So if you just miss cuts in those first, you know, these are, a lot of these guys are their first PGA tour tournaments ever. They're, they're nervous. They don't know the golf course. And you can, and it's really, you know, it's really hard to get into these next few tournaments after the reshuffle. And so, you know, I think, I think this change is, you know, I know they cut cards from 30 to 20. But I think those 20 guys are going to have a much better chance at getting into all these tournaments. And I think that's, that's actually a really good, a really good change. And, and you know, you, at, at a certain point, you know, you have to cut PGA tour cards as well, to kind of make it all make sense in, in all that, in all that priority stuff. And I saw how they're making the priority that this is like total PGA tour nerd stuff. But like, it seemed like place for that. This is where you get into that. Yeah. It seemed like the 101 to 110 is, is above the 111 that that's like a separate category in the itself. So it seemed like I, I, I, I'm going to guess that in 2026, those guys will probably get into Tory since that's still a two course, you know, it's a bigger tournament. So those, those, at least from the one inside the 110, they'll likely play a decent amount of tournaments. So, it's not, it sounds harsh. I still think, I, I, you know, at the end of the day, I think it was needed, at least to get these corn fairy tour guys to just, you know, when we tell you give you a card, I used to joke like, no, it's, it's like, it's like a 66% card. It's like two thirds of a card. It's not a full card. You know, you get the last two times, you get into kind of a lot of the opposite field events, you know, and some of the not the, the premier, premier cars, at least now, they, they have a better chance. Now, now it's more like an 80%, 75%. The glad girl grew coming at you with a throwback jam, that was glad for his flex, drawstring, trash bags, feature in Pine Salt, original synth, and that's better than all good. It's all glad. Charlie, I really had to slum that category, the corn ferry tour category. I played one week in that category and then the one the next week, because I really never experienced what Michael's talking about. And I must be nice. You know, like, like, uh, was it, uh, cal porter, uh, how he mentioned nobody's teed off before me at the master. So, uh, and that will continue on. I'll say this that I think the one thing that's two were probably did not anticipate was that the folks that were in the signature events, I think that they were probably not expecting for those for a majority of those players to play in as many open field events as they did. Um, you know, Scotty obviously gobbled up all the points, but you still like, you don't play well in those events. You gotta go get points. You know, it's, uh, and that's taking away starts from the corn ferry tour guys that it all makes sense when you look at it, because now each event, when you look at it individually based on when when the time of the year it is, uh, how big the event is now you'll actually have a field when you look at it. You're like, all right. Yep. There's the right spacing guys that are going to be hauled up three groups on certain tees. So that part of it makes sense to me. Yeah, you know, like, you know, those, like I said, those early morning tea times, like they squeeze in, you have to stay squeezing as much as they can, and you know, even like, even up to like Valero where guys have no chance of finishing, um, that week, and that's like April, right? And so, you know, everyone is one of those and, you know, this, it was reported this last this week, but, you know, when you can kind of pick up the breadcrumbs when a lot of these top guys are kind of telling the media like, oh, you know, we're thinking about reducing, you know, we think we think maybe like 100 is a number, and it's just like, okay, that's, that's when you hear like, oh, like, that's, they're going to cut car, they're going to cut it to a, to a lower number. And, you know, they can always, if they feel like, if everyone feels like, you know, we did it too much, it's always, it's always easier to add cars. Yeah, it's, it's always hard to cut. And, you know, I was pretty, I thought they might even maybe just do like 110, and then 100, but, you know, they just rip the Band-Aid and, and, you know, they can always add for the year after if they feel like that's the proper way. That's like my one big question to you. So, right now, all we've been reading about over the last two years is the Piff, the PGA Tour, the Saudis, trying to come to some form of agreement and what it would look like to see if live players would be able to come back to the PGA Tour. And so, my question to you is here is that I look at this priority ranking list and, and who's listed on here. Obviously, if you top 70 guys, then you have the 71 to 100. And then the next 10 is the DP World Tour. So, when I'm in my head, I'm thinking, all right, so we went down from 30 to 20 for CornFairy Tour, guys, I'm thinking it seemed like that was a do right for the DP World Tour. Like, I, I thought they should have cut down from 10 to 5 on that and kept it at maybe 25 CornFairy Tour, guys. But let's say now in this, like, in this priority ranking thing is five exemptions or 10 exemptions for live tour players. And now I go down here on the list and I look at Finishers 101 to 110, where I go look at Finishers 111 to 125. And now these players are having to sit back and watch X live tour player play on the PGA Tour. To me, that's where I get fired up. Yeah, I mean, that's, that's definitely a possibility. Like, I, you know, those, to be honest, like, I've kind of that not even didn't even really like cross my mind. Like, you know, like, to be completely honest, like, I have no idea of how these negotiations are going, but let's talk about it. Yeah. But, but like, just, you know, picking up red crumbs here and there, just talking to talking to some of the other guys, it's like, you know, I have a hard time believing that it's just going to be like, back to normal, and it's just going to be a big mashup. Like, I have really hard time believing that's going to happen. I think, I think that that the, I don't know if you want to call it a trick, but a lot of these guys, their eligibility have run out from, you know, their tournament wins from back in the day, whoever. And so, I guess they could get sponsored exemptions, but that's, that's only like a, that's a pretty limited kind of selection. Yeah. Yeah. And, and right. I mean, from the PGA Tour perspective, like, you know, they really only want probably like, Bryson, John Rom, Cam Smith, like, there's, there's, there's, there's, there's a very few select guys that we probably want back. And, you know, the way I truly like, the way I see it, if the, if a deal ever comes back, like, these tours aren't going to, it's not going to just merge into one, it's going to, you know, the, the lid is going to do some of that's lived stuff for a while. Tour is just going to be on its own. And there's just a little crossover, you know, John and, and Bryson might play a few events here and there, but I, I have a hard time believing that, you know, at the Sony Open, like John Rom is going to tee off on a tee time. I have a hard time believing that I think, I think it's more like that, that Champions League, you know, soccer format where, you know, guys play their own leagues and then a few times a year they, they just come together. And so, I, I personally just don't think that it's going to affect my, my playing privileges a ton, as long as I'm inside that 100. I think I saw, I think it was Harry Higgs on no laying up within the past week or so that had come, he was asked about just the state negotiations. And I think to summarize his stance was effectively, I don't want to get any more emails unless there's some form of progress on this thing. Like, I want a real progress. Stop telling me about it. Just show it to me. Just, Tim Czecho of where you're at right now, Michael, on the state of this whole thing, how you feel. I tell you what, like ever since RBC Canada last year, I, if there's an email before, I am like, I'm clicking that thing right away. I just, I cannot get over. I was playing a practitioner on that Tuesday. And I was just like, I stood on like the fairway, like, like, what am I reading right now? And, and, and, you know, like before you get, you get a lot of emails from the tour of like, of just random stuff of like, just, you know, just tournament information, you know, that, that you might need. But every anytime it's an email from the tour, I, you know, I'm like, oh, I need to, I might take my time and read this. So, but as with the negotiations, you know, I am very far out of the loop. I, I, yeah, I'm never going to be in that loop. And so, you know, a lot of guys in my, you know, situation are like, I'm sure they'll tell me when it's done. And well, not, and everyone will know at, at the same time. It's, so I've, I've given up trying to, like, find out, I've given up on all that. So, you know, if it happens, it happens. And, but until that point, I'm not going to put too much energy into it. Have you, have you ever been on the pack? I have never been on the pack. Is that something that you would ever want to do? Um, at times, yes, but, um, some of the guys that I have talked to, it just seems like, you know, being on the board is one thing. And you, you have to be a part of the pack, um, for a certain amount of time to become a board member. But, you know, I, I, no one's done like a study on it, but like, um, if you maybe check, like, their FedEx cover rankings on the years, these guys are on the board and not on the board, like, it's, it's not going to be like the most beneficial thing to your game. This guy just actually spending a lot of time. I know how much you went on the phone. I mean, these guys are actually like, you know, I remember like, I was talking to Adam Scott. Yeah, I was talking to Adam Scott, who's on the board this year, um, at Waste Management. And, you know, he played like Thursday morning or something and they had like a, or Thursday afternoon and he had a early Friday morning tea time and he's like, had like a two hour, two, three hour board call at that, that, after this round, I'm just like, man, like that, that does not, it's like the last thing I'd want to do after, after a round. So these guys, uh, it's like a legit, legit job. So at the moment, I, I don't think I want to do that. All right. Let's put on your pack hat. Let's say you are somebody that, that is on the pack or let's say you're the commissioner of the PGA tour. Just like how John Rahm, you know, complained about that there isn't enough porta pottys out on the golf course, which I second that motion. There's not enough porta pottys on the golf course. I'm always struggling to find a porta pottys out there. So 100% agree with that. Do you have like a gripe right now that you're like, man, we have got to make a change on the PGA tour right now. And this, this has to be done. Do you have one? Um, I have on the top of my head, I have two. I have one for strictly for me and a couple, a few others, but one for, uh, the general, the general tour. Um, the one for the general tour is I think the, you can set this line at any point, but let's say, so when you play a PGA tour schedule, they give you your average, um, time you've spent hitting like a tee shot, second got whatever, and it kind of gives you an overall average. Mine's at like 30, 38 seconds or whatever. So you set whatever, like, and anyone over, you know, let's say if average on tour was 40 seconds, anyone over 42 seconds, like a legitimate slow player, they have to wear a different colored bib that everyone in the, everyone in the field knows. And we, or like the top 10 slowest guys, their caddies were a bib. And you know, these guys are going to get heckled like crazy. Um, so that's probably the reason why it's a bad idea, but, um, it's brilliant. We have no, no, no, no, no, no, like shaming is the only way we're going to fix some of these guys. I promise you. And, you know, I was actually tweeting this, like, you know, Patrick Canley gets a lot of heat for, for being a slow player, and he's definitely not like, he's definitely slower than average, but like, I promise you, there are slower players than Pat. Pat, Pat looks bad because he takes a lot over the ball, which that's kind of when the camera's on, but he's pretty quick. Um, before that, there's a lot of guys that are the opposite, and that's like even worse. Um, well, so that's, that's my one change, public shaming for slow play. Um, the other more personal is I'm Korean. I was born in Korea, and I love Korean food. So just some more Korean food in the lunch area is it would be would be my thing. Nothing too crazy, maybe some, just some bulgogi beef and some rice. That's, that's it. Wait, how do you pronounce it? How do you is bulgogi beef? Oh, yes. They said, like, BB go because always remember it as CJ. BB go is great. We go works perfect. Yeah, I've been, I've been pronouncing that wrong. Sorry. So, um, those would be the changes kind of on top of my head. What's your like smiling? I come over for dinner. We're going to hang out. We're going to talk about PJ tour changes. We're going to eat a full Korean meal that you're designing the menu for. What's that look like start to finish? Now we, um, well, you know, you guys, Charlie, I, I, I guess you're some from Fresno. I am right. That's, and, and smiley. Obviously you're from, uh, from the ham, Alabama. So, so there's, I am, you know, we're going to start real basic, real starter level stuff, whenever you're not going to get into any of the crazier or, you know, quote, unquote, crazier stuff, we're going to just go, you know, Korean barbecue style, just do some marinated beef. I've had plenty of practice taking some of my American friends to just start a level stuff, start off easy and, uh, just do some marinated beef, maybe a little rice, nothing too crazy. Just, just to start you guys off. What's, uh, what's the best stop on tour for that? Like the one who like city you go to Vegas is this restaurant. Vegas is really good. Vegas has a good, um, Korean barbecue spot. Um, LA, obviously LA has a mass, LA has a massive career town, but the problem is it's really far. It's really hard. It's just, the traffic is impossible to get to from where Rive is. Um, bad Vegas, you don't have to deal with that as much. So I said, I would settle, settle in for an ended out burger at the range and call it a call today. Correct. Correct. Correct. Yeah. The barbecue is electric. Like there's not enough of Korean barbecue. We have, you know, like these, you know, Japanese tepanyaki places, which are great. They make the volcano, et cetera, et cetera. There should be as many Korean barbecue spots as there are those in, in the world. That's my, that's my outside of the tour. That's my fix that world fix that United States. I want more Korean barbecue. I don't know if I've eaten Korean barbecue, like I don't like it at the table. When, uh, like, hibachi. That's Jeff. Like, my, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't do that. Don't do that. Don't do that. Um, I, um, we'll figure, we'll figure a time for sure. Okay. I'll take you for sure. All right. We got, we're going to IHOP with Hadeki soon. And then now we got to go to Korean barbecue with, with Michael. I promise you, you will have a better time with me at a Korean barbecue spot than Hadeki at IHOP. I promise you that. We're going to take you to Culver's, um, on the, uh, up in Minnesota. That's our one, one thing we'll do. That's good. Butter burger and, uh, what do you call it? A concrete mixer. Concrete mixer. Yeah. It's cheese currants. Can't beat it. Oh, man. Charlie, why don't you take us out, man? We definitely went over our allotted time, but I think we just had a lot of fun. So I'm sorry for keeping your audio for a little longer than, uh, you're maybe expecting, but Michael, this has been great, man. Oh good. Anytime. Yeah. I mean, I don't have much to add. I would just, uh, now a recurring podcast guest with us, the two time friend of the show. So we appreciate you hanging out. And yeah, we're going to take you up on Korean barbecue very soon. Thanks for hanging. Sounds good, guys. Let me, Hey, smiley. Let me, let me know if I've, you know, I've been on tour for like 70 years. So I've, you know, I, you tell me a spot you're coming to. I probably have a list of spots where we can go, but a bang, but a boom. I love it. Let's call it. Let's handshake on that one. All right, buddy. Say it. Well, smiley. There you have it. Really fun insightful conversation from Michael Kim. And I'm just wondering, you know, they're talking about these proposed changes 20, 26. Can we accelerate the slow play Scarlet letter? Like can we get that happening as soon as we possibly can? I'm so glad he had that cooking, you know, in the crock pot and brought it out for us on the show because what a great, great bit. Um, it's not even a bit. It should happen. It's, it's incredible. I thought what he was going to say was that they should post anybody above X seconds every single week in the locker room or something like that. But he's even took it a step further and made it into a bib situation where everybody gets to see it. I it's listen, he's really leaning into the tours talking about being more aggressive and exploratory with their content options. That's like a plus grand slam content. I love it. Love where it's heads at. And also, dude, Korean barbecue is so good. It's I've heard great things. We got to dial it in. We got to do like a Korean bar. We've had our Colvers obsession for a while. I think our next kick should be an obsession or is it more just a just kind of a bit that the best bits you can't tell whether or not they're bits. I think that's where Colvers leave it at that. Let's leave it at that. Big thanks to Michael Kim for taking the time to hang with us. And yeah, we do have tour golf on the on the dock this week, the worldwide technology championship down in Los Cabos, Mexico. So we'll be recapping that on the other side of this week. But of course, we'll have an interview dropping in this feed on Wednesday that we're very much looking forward to. So that's all we got for now. Thank you for watching and listening as always. Oh, oh, we have final thoughts of smiley. We're going to kick it over to him. Yep, quick final thought you're listening to this on a Monday. So at this point, daylight savings has happened. And it's kind of the end and the close to golf season. It's it's got some frustrating time of the year. And just yeah. And now we start to think about wins the Masters and it starts last night, which you listening to it on a Monday. So daylight savings bummer. You can't go hit balls after the end of a workday. You can't go on a walk with the kids without taking a flashlight. A lot of sad things, especially being a central time zone guy right up next to the eastern time. It's going to be guard target for 30. That's that is a tough scene. You know, for many people, you go into like a simulator hibernation. Hope you got a good sim spot. You'd like to go to wherever you live. Lot a lot of putting on the putting mats in the office this time of year, chipping in door with foam balls. So whatever you need to do, just start getting prepped now because daylight savings has arrived and hope you can make it through the winter. That's all I got. Do you want to say anything else? No, you don't want to say anything else. All right. Well, see you later. You know, listen to this podcast is really cool. All right. First time. It's cool. See what you guys are doing.
