Hey everyone, Mike here from the PTE Network. This here is an episode we recorded as a lead-in to the sci-fi portion of our best 80s movie mega bracket on boozy bracketology. Hey everybody, welcome to boozy bracketology, the podcast that leaves in three things, strong drinks, strong opinions, and crowning champions. And today, we're going to be doing our play in games for the best 80s sci-fi movie. We're not going to waste any time, let's jump right into it. First we're doing the play in game of Wrath of Khan versus Voyage Home in the Star Trek franchise. We're going to start off with Alan Kreissel, sir, what's your pick? Being very succinct, my pick is Voyage Home. The best thing I can say about Wrath of Khan is that it was better than the first one. Voyage Home is a better movie, so Voyage Home wins this one for me. Alright, mensing no words or moving right on over to Siege. Siege, what is your pick? For this one, I actually thought that while Voyage Home has all those fish out of water things, Khan, if we don't have Wrath of Khan, we don't have the rest of any of it. And Star Trek dies an ignomal death. So while it's not the best, it is better than Voyage Home in many ways, so I will choose Khan. Alright, we are tied one to one. And I really, really want to skip Michael Turner because he said some really not nice things about the University of Georgia in this week's episode of Trivia Warfare. But I suppose I have to keep it going. So Michael Turner, what is your pick between these two? I could have said roll tied, are you happy about that one? Well, no, because I'm sure at the time you recorded that, that I'm happy to get it. It's true. And I would never say that. No, listen, you know who I am, you know what I'm about, I'm on brand always. Listen, again, keeping the succinct, I'm all for Greenpeace and all of the ecology worldwide and everything, but I don't want saving whales to be a part of my Star Trek movies. Give me Wrath of Khan all day every day. Alright, Wrath of Khan pulls ahead. And Chris, before we get to you, I'm assuming because we have seven people on this, that it's going to be four boats until it's moved on, is that correct? Alright, well then let's just jump to you, sir, and what is your pick? I don't like Star Trek. Alright, well, fuck that, we'll screw that up for the next one. No, I guess we do need to hear your opinion. It's never been my jam. In this case here, Voyage Home bored me a tear. So did Wrath of Khan for that matter. In this case here, Wrath of Khan has a lot more pop culture relevance and did a lot more for the Star Trek franchise as a whole. I don't like it, but I like that it exists and it makes people happy. And Wrath of Khan did a lot more for that than Voyage Home did, so Khan all day. Alright, Wrath of Khan with it's third vote, Brian, are you going to be the one that puts a nail on the coffin, or we have a fight on our hands? Okay, so we have the best Starship battle in Star Trek versus the first one that really embraced humor. Voyage Home had a lot of really great moments with the, a lot of character moments that they didn't get to see in other Star Trek movies. But I have to go with the one that made, I saw this, I saw both of these in the theater, the one that made me cry in a theater and made my dad sitting next to me cry in a theater was watching Spock, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one or the few, or the fewer the one. So I am voting for Khan! Alright, Wrath of Khan will be moving on, but we still have a couple of people left that we definitely want to hear what they thought. Ian, shall see, did we get this right? Yes, we got this right. So there are a couple of different flavors, if you will, of Star Trek episodes, and one of those is the Fish Out of Water sort of comedy episodes. And yes, I did say Fish Out of Water. It's a mammal! I said it first. But anyway, you have the comedy episodes, for instance, most everything to do with Frankie. And a voyage home was pretty much an entire comedy episode in a two-hour movie, Wrath of Khan all the way. It was a better film, it had a battle scene, there was no suspense in voyage home. It's Wrath of Khan all the way. Alright, and lastly, we are going over to Mr. Mike Mott. Mike is Alan going to stand alone, or are you going to be joining him? I am going to vote for the clearly superior Star Trek film of the 1980s, Star Trek 5, the final frontier. I am coming through this monitor, man. Whoa, whoa! I, of course, did that just to get a reaction. I actually think this is very tough, I think these, well, I mean, they are here. So there are the two best Star Trek films of the '80s. I think that Star Trek 4 voyage home is in many ways, even though it has to build upon the previous, the two and three in particular to build upon the story. I think it is many ways, the easier entry point into the Star Trek universe, and largely the reason that I say that is because Star Trek 4 was the first Star Trek movie that I actually saw. So in that sense, it will always have a special place in my heart. Star Trek 2, The Wrath of Khan, is the better film we did get this one right. Alright, Wrath of Khan will be moving on into the main '80s sci-fi movie Braggot. Now we have one more play in game, and gentlemen, I do not envy you this one, as I think it is much more difficult than I think people would realize, except for Mr. Turner, who I expect to hear, just nothing but opinions. And we will start with Mr. Siege, and that is Empire Strikes Back, or Return of the Jedi. Empire, Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader is his father. I can't do the rest of this. I could sum it up without doing that. It could sum it up in five words. I love you. I know. Empire, Empire is the better movie. It's Lawrence Castan's second best movie, Silverado is the first, but we are not talking westerns tonight. Alright, one for Empire, Mr. Turner, let's hear those opinions. First of all, I'm glad that you know my brand by now, Jon, I appreciate that. I mean, we are sort of talking, we are talking westerns, it's a space western. And to quote how I met your mother, the rebellion would have failed not for the Ewoks, so calm down on that front before anyone jumps on that. But now, let's be honest with ourselves, Empire is the greatest Star Trek film. And it's not close. It's Empire's Trek film. Alright, well, Mr. Turner thinks that Empire is the greatest Star Trek film. That's right. We're going to go over to Chris and find out what is the better Star Wars film. Well, let's start with the fact that being honest with myself is not on brand for me, so 13 year old Chris knows what he wants to vote for. Logical Chris that's seen them both knows what the right answer is. I've got a lot to say about it. And I've pissed some people off with this in the past, but I'm not going to save that for the main recording, but Empire is the better movie, I've got to move Empire along here. Alright, Empire is up three to nothing. Mr. Brian Nash, where do we stand? I have the opportunity to do it twice, guys. I have a lot of opinions on this. I am going to give a vote to Return of the Jedi, just so I'm not the guy who decides both of them, because I expect somebody behind me is probably going to make a good choice. But I don't want Return of the Jedi to go down in a suite. So I will give a vote to Return of the Jedi. Alright, so Jedi gets a vote and the chaos goblin in me really wants everyone else to follow suit just to see what happens, but unfortunately I don't get to make that decision. Mr. Ian Chelsea, what is your pick on this? Although eight year old me really had no problems with Jedi, including the Ewoks, and I still don't really have too much of a problem with the Ewoks. I got to go with Empire, yeah, Empire. It's just the better movie overall, more of an emotional arc throughout. It's just the better movie. Alright, well Ian does put the nail in the coffin. Mike, did we get this right? Well, I, for one, am going to give my vote to the best Star Wars-themed film of the 1980s, The Battle for Endor. I mean, come on people, what are we even doing here? I'm sorry. Same joke didn't quite rely on the second time. But no, this is a question that has been debated over and over again, and I think that will continue to be so in spite of the fact that all decisions made by the Boozy Bracatology podcast are final and inarguable. I don't think it's as cut and dried as a lot of people are making it out to be. I think that I think wall-to-wall Empire, yeah, it is probably the better film, but some of the highs in Return of the Jedi are just so great. The battle on Jabba's Barge being won, but the one that sticks out most of my mind, is the battle in the throne room. How much is going on in that scene with the, I mean, Vader suddenly reading Luke's mind and realizing that he's got the twin sister. I mean, he also was realizing simultaneously at that time that he has a daughter and all of that. And just the sheer emotion in that scene in the Emperor Catherine through the whole thing, I think there's a lot going for Return of the Jedi too. I think we probably got this one right throughout my life. I've waffled over which of these is my favorite Star Wars film and it's always been one of these two. I'm going to throw another vote to Return of the Jedi, but I, again, I think that either way we were, it was really hard to say that it was truly a wrong choice here. All right, Jedi getting a well-deserved second vote before I go to Alan, since I am the host, I will say if I were voting, I definitely would have voted for Jedi, not because I think it is the better movie, but it is because I am more than astalgically tied to Jedi than I am to Empire. I agree. I think Empire is definitely the better crafted movie, but if I'm going to watch another one again, it's probably going to be Ambo. All right, Alan, your last one, did we get this one right? Yes, absolutely. Return of the Jedi is a satisfying conclusion to the first, second trilogy. The battle seems awesome, as Mike just said. For me, though, for this movie, the Jabba sequences are just a little too long. I would have voted Empire if it made a difference. And here I was going, 13-year-old Christians going, some of those Jabba sequences could have been a little bit longer. All right. Well, with that, that is the end of our playing rounds. Just to cap up, a wrath of Khan will be going on to the main one, and we'll be facing off against Flash Gordon, and Empire Strikes Back will be going on to face off against final countdown. I am Jon Speeds, I just now realize I never introduced myself. So I've been your host, and you know what, we'll see you on the main bracket. Yup, nub! the next one! the next one! the next one!
