[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Hello everyone, welcome in to another edition of the GSMC College Football Podcast brought to you by the GSMC Sports Network. I'm your host, as always, Tommy Berzi. It is Monday, October 14th around here, and we have a jam-packed show. There's no two ways about that. We'll get into the Ohio State Oregon game to start, then we'll get into the two overtime games, the other two big performances from this past weekend. LSU gets a huge win over Ole Miss at home as well as Penn State going all the way out west and getting a huge win over USC. Then we'll get to all the teams that escaped with a win, including Alabama and Tennessee, avoiding their second straight loss would have been disaster in both those places that went the other direction, and then Kansas State barely getting out of Boulder with a win, definitely a really, really fun game, and it tends to be a theme around Colorado's games this year. Then we'll do kind of the rest of the top 25, get to Texas, kind of just dominating the Red River, Georgia's continuing to struggle, BYU with a huge win, we'll get to all of those right there, and then we'll just do a whip around. We'll get to all of the games we didn't get a chance to get to earlier in the show, so Utah following is going to be a huge one. Iowa putting up 40 points somehow, a ton of stuff to get to in the back half, including Vandy continuing the run that they're on. So we'll get to all of that when we start, but before we jump in, I do want to remind you all, we get tons of questions and comments throughout the show. And the best way for you all to get your question on the screen, we can have a fun back and forth here. It's to use the tip of donation, not the tip of donation link, to use the super chat. At the bottom of the chat on the Sports Network page, you can click on that dollar sign at any question, comment you like. It'll pop up on the screen and we can have a fun back and forth here. Definitely want this to be very interactive, so utilize that as you see fit. The GSMC podcast.net page is also up for the tip and no nations if you'd like to use that, does the exact same thing. So definitely utilize that because a lot of questions to be had after this crazy weekend. We'll start over there in Eugene, Oregon, because that was the big game going into the weekend and it really lived up to the hype. It was absolutely incredible out there in Eugene. It was so much fun to watch this team go to work. I'm sorry, I'm a little over the place right now. There we go. Here we are. So Oregon gets a win 32 to 31 in this one and this one lived up to the hype. We are through two of the games that I think everyone circled around March or April, whenever these schedules came out. You had Georgia, Alabama, you had Ohio State, Oregon. Both of those have been absolutely incredible. You could argue the two best games of the year. I think it's very easy to argue a couple of the other games we'll talk about today were elite games as well. But at the end of the day, really lived up to the hype. Oregon gets a very, very close win and it was awesome. I think the biggest thing here that you have to take away is they got Dylan Gabriel for a reason. And it was this game and he executed that a ridiculously high level. I said it when I was previewing this show, I was very nervous about his ability to make the plays he needed to down the stretch. And I believe I can't remember the name of the chatter, but there was an Oregon fan in here saying I expected both those quarterbacks to throw an interception. I very much did as well and neither of them did. So a lot going into this game, but Dylan Gabriel got the best of Will Howard. He played really, really good football was absolutely incredible all over the field. He was eight for 10 for passes eight for 10, 243 yards, two touchdowns, zero picks on passes over 10 yards. The kid was incredible top to bottom. He was absolutely awesome. This game made a play with his legs obviously for that touchdown run, which I think is that right there. But the reality is that's exactly why he went out and got Dylan Gabriel and he showed you on Saturday night why he is so special. And then he took advantage of Denzo Burke a lot. A lot of his greatness came at the expense of Denzo Burke. He was targeted eight times in this game eight catches 179 yards two touchdowns. He is a very good player. I feel very confident in that he is a guy that I think is going to be able to bounce back from this and play really good football. He just got burned a couple of times and he very much needs to bounce back because this defense it is back end in particular. I think predicates a lot on being able to say Denzel is going to be able to handle what he can handle on his side of the field. And then we can deploy the rest of the guys to handle all the other stuff which Lathan Ransom playing all around the field kind of a rover position. You have a Caleb Downs coming out of the box being incredible and run help. You have so many different guys on that defense. It does kind of predicate on and start with Denzo Burke. He does need to be that corner that they can rely on pretty much start to finish. And on Saturday just wasn't that way. Still a very talented player. Still expect great things from him. But as of right now definitely left a little bit on the table in this game. We got to talk about Dan Lanning. And I understand I should add a picture of him here. But the reality is we got to talk about just this Oregon program overall. Because if you've been paying attention before this year you saw the signs right recruiting at a ridiculously elite level you know building where he needs to build which is in the trenches which we'll get to here in a second paid real dividends in this game. But the reality is he was absolutely remarkable. He's been building this program up for so many years. Last year he got really close to breaking through loss to Washington twice. This was his moment and he took full advantage and you saw it after the game. The emotion after this one was absolutely special and it shows you just how much this one meant and just how much he knew. This one was about going forward in the Big Ten. Remarkable moment for him and definitely puts him on a really really good track going forward this season and beyond really at Oregon. And then we got Ryan Day. The question around him was always can you win the big game? He didn't win the big game. And that's kind of the end all be all in a lot of senses. When you're talking to Ohio State fans they want that big win. I believe he's something like two and eight against top five opponents needs to be better. No two ways about that. That being said I don't necessarily think that was an, I don't know if there were a lot of the issues that Ohio State had in this game were Ryan Day dependent. I think there were some issues that could have been handled a little bit better. I thought the last drive in terms of clock management could have been handled a little bit better. But that more fell on Chip Kelly side of things than Ryan Days just because the play calling was a little bit all over the place and I'll get to that here in a second. But the reality is I do think it's one of those things that it's very easy to sit here and say Ryan Day can't get it done on the national stage again. He has to be able to turn the corner. I don't know. It's one of those games. It wasn't like Michigan last year now they did get dominated on the line of scrimmage but it wasn't quite like Michigan in the sense that they just got rolled over. They played a really solid game. They fought a punch for punch for most of this game and then just came up a little bit short. So it's hard for me to sit here and say Ryan Day shouldn't be the head coach or anything crazy should happen but obviously when you're in Ohio State fan you want this big game and you came out on the wrong side. And that's kind of the end all be all here. He has to start getting on the right side of these things. But getting back to the we talked about Dylan Gabriel. He proved them right. I don't want to say well Howard proved Ohio State fans wrong about bringing him in about being confident in who he is because I fully understand the last decision cannot happen. Period end of story. He has to be able to get down in time. Give them a shot. Now if you got down in time he probably is sitting around the 33 yard line 50 yard kick. Don't know if he makes it. I would probably wager to say he misses it but at the end of the day college kickers are absolutely incredible. So who knows. Regardless he has to give his team a shot. There's no two ways about that. He has to be more aware of the surroundings. All of that being said. This last drive was handled very poorly from a play calling perspective. At least from my perspective. They had two plays of the eight plays on that drive got out of bounds. And only one of them to my estimation was really designed to get out of bounds and Mecha Buka made a great play to get the other one out of bounds. But the reality is they threw way too many short of the sticks. They threw way too many in bounds and Oregon took advantage. And then you put well Howard in the position where you got six seconds left and you don't really know what to do and then you're just a second late getting down. So I think overall that last drive was not handled very well but obviously the story is going to be well Howard. Now no turnovers 300 passing yards. If I told you that on Friday if you're an Ohio State fan I told you you were getting that from well Howard you would feel great about it. I understand he made the final mistake but the reality is he gets down on time make or miss that field goal. If he gets down on time with one second left and they're able to set up and kick that field goal the narrative around him is totally different. So I'm not here to tear down well Howard he did make a big mistake and he's going to have to learn from that but the reality is played a really really solid game in a really tough atmosphere. But also little PS I don't know if Dan Lanning ran the 12th player player on the field on purpose if he did that's absolutely genius but regardless the clock should reset in that rule. I don't understand that rule by any means I think it's not the offense's fault that the defense has 12 men so I thought that should have reset. I don't understand why the rule is different but at the end of the day if he did it on purpose. Wow if he didn't do on purpose still worked out no two ways about that. He absolutely did Andre he was absolutely incredible I was just talking about the comment that you had where we said felt like both quarterbacks were going to throw a pick. We were wrong on both accounts but it was absolutely incredible to watch that. Offensive explosivity was a huge part of this it was something that frankly was missing from Oregon for the first couple of weeks you worried about the idea. You worried about Dylan Gabriel being able to push the ball down field and that was not remotely a problem. 3 41 through the air 69 yards 69 48 32 twice in passing in past plays also runs of 25 and 27 yards which was that Dylan Gabriel touchdown. So Will Stein went to work he absolutely ate Jim Knowles dinner he did everything that this offense wanted to do the first couple of weeks. Maybe it was just they were holding a little bit back for this one and they really came out swinging. The offensive line and defensive line for Oregon controlled this game in a lot of ways and I don't think the are really they just dominated in so many different ways. The Ohio State offensive line that frankly I still believe is one of the best in the entire country. I still believe has elite edge rushers one sack eight pressures and it's because Johnny Corniolis and Josh Connolly are one of if not the best tackle duo in the entire country. The only other one that I can think of is Will Campbell john Emery Jones and that's a very tough battle to elite elite duos out there. But the reality is you get one sack and eight pressures with this defensive line. You're probably going to win the game and then on the other side if you're able to stop quench on judkins and criteria on Henderson 21 carries 110 yards one touchdown. That's even better you're doing exactly what you need to do to beat Ohio State because frankly their stats are going to look good as long as they're not looking great you're probably playing pretty good football around them. And then you made enough defensive plays. It wasn't all that pretty you know Ohio State did plenty offensively but when they needed them they absolutely got the stops you know Ohio State had a chance to go up 14 early in this game. And they in Oregon forced a force to fumble then they had really solid coverage down the stretch of that game just to give them a little bit of a comfort. And I think there were a lot of things that went into that I think somewhat I don't know why Ohio State didn't run the ball a little bit more in the second half Oregon did a great job stopping it. But they were running the ball pretty effectively in the first half and then kind of changed offensive game plan so something to think about when we go forward with Ohio State. But where do they go from here is a big time question we have to ask for both these teams in two very very different contexts is obviously but we'll start with Ohio State. This one hurts there's no two ways about that you know I don't know if it's one of those things that you look up and you try to you know fire Ryan Day or you regret getting Will Howard or any of that type of stuff because I do think you played one of the best teams in the country maybe the best team in the country depending on who you ask and you played them at their house you played them within one point. Obviously the end of the game was an absolute nightmare it's one of those things that is going to be really really hard to shake but you take the full picture you take the entirety of the game. I think you can feel okay if you're Ohio State now the defense has to get a ton better. This back end was supposed to be the best back end in the entire country that's very much what I thought going into the season and I'm not necessarily fully off that take but man Oregon made them look very very benign there's no two ways about that. So there definitely have some things to figure out the defensive pass rush has to get there more often they probably won't face an offensive line like Oregon until they possibly face Oregon again but the reality is they got a lot of stuff to figure out I still think this is a very good team I still think they're towards the top four or five teams in the country and they will have plenty to say going forward but definitely some things to figure out and you got to go to Penn State in a couple of weeks and if you don't haven't figured out by then maybe you got two losses and you're looking on the outside of the big 12 to a big 10 title which you essentially guaranteed going into the season and then for Oregon this was the moment no two ways about that Oregon got has kind of been in the weird place for the past couple of years Dan Lane's been building he's been doing such a good job behind the scenes. They haven't quite gotten to the point where you see it on the field at least to the extent that they wanted to being a national title contender being the people that are very much in the conversation for everything in college football. This was that moment where they proved to everyone that they are it was absolutely incredible to watch this team Dan Laney did an incredible job obviously was a little bit aggressive with that on side kick that I don't know how it worked but you'll take what you want to get in this world but the reality is this team is off to the races big 10 title CFP national title all on the table for this team obviously some things they'll have to deal with they have to go to Purdue on Friday night and I know it's Purdue. West Lafayette on Friday night is an absolute nightmare so just something to keep in mind there but the reality is I think this is an elite team Dylan Gabriel has shot himself up to the Heisman nods. I think Evan Stewart having a big game is absolutely huge for this team because as much as I love Ted Johnson you need a little bit more guys and Evan Stewart had been a little bit slow start to the season but really came on in this game was absolutely incredible more than anything a remarkable team they controlled this game for a lot of it I think Ohio State you know hung around for a lot of it but it really did feel like most of this game was dictated by Oregon and it came out that way definitely the biggest win of the entire college football season and Oregon right up there neither top you know depending on who you ask they're the number one team in the country Texas is the number one team in the country frankly to me it doesn't matter both those teams are absolutely awesome but Oregon does have the biggest win of the bunch no two ways about that and absolutely massive win and who knows what happens now maybe Oregon goes on a little bit of a tear here maybe Oregon's turns into a terrifying entity going forward but as of right now they get to enjoy this one move forward hopefully be Purdue on Friday and then you're off to the races and continue rolling but incredible game one of those that I have to imagine we might not see these two teams again I have to imagine we'll see both these teams in postseason football I feel like they're both CFP teams if something happens with Ohio State down the road we'll see what happens but at the end of the day elite teams playing elite football in an elite atmosphere it was college football it was absolutely incredible to watch but let's take our first break here got a little carried away there love that game but let's take our first break here when we come back we got to get to all the big time over the big overtime games we have to get to LSU Ole Miss we got to get to Penn State USC to huge games that definitely have a lot to do with what the CFP race going forward so we'll break it down right after this are you ready game and Andrea comment here I do think there's a lot on Ryan Day it's not to say I'm taking any pressure off Ryan Day cause you gotta win these games no two ways about that it just more felt like a lot of the issues that they had in this game had a little less to do with Ryan Day obviously it all comes back to the head coach and they very much have to deal with those things but I don't know this wasn't necessarily a indictment on Ryan Day at least in my estimation there's obviously a number of things at play and at the end of the day whenever you lose one of these games it's going to be an indictment on Ryan Day in one way or another but I don't know I don't think that was quite as bad as the Michigan loss as a pastor a couple of the other ones but definitely something that's open to interpretation and I'm sure some Ohio State fans very much agree with you on that front but let's get over to the LSU and Penn State games cause these were incredible as well somehow we don't have enough time to get to all of the incredible games around the country but this one was awesome it was absolutely incredible to watch these teams on the field and frankly I think it was one of those games that really set up well for LSU because it proved to LSU not only can you beat a team scoring 50 points and they score 45 and you can only beat a team you know making sure you get one pick later the game and that's the end all be all they kind of slugged it out in this one and now there were big plays don't get me wrong they were plays by Caden Lee they were plays by Trey Harris before he went down but the reality is if this is the defense you're getting from LSU going forward there's a lot of things that they can do very very much bend don't break I believe Ole Miss got into the red zone three times only got a touchdown or only got a few go once so really dominant stuff from LSU really did an incredible job Blake Baker was absolutely in his bag in this game and I think it's one of those things that now LSU is kind of on the races you know they they're doing things that I think a lot of people after week one especially did not peg them to be doing but they're kind of turning a corner a little bit as for Ole Miss this was the year this was every everything was pushed into this year a remarkable remarkable transfer portal class that has ridiculous amounts of talent third year starting quarterback weapons all over the place and injuries have played a part in that but everyone's injured at some point so it's October 14th and they are essentially out of the CFP race now they do have games coming forward they can win out and still be in the in the hunt but the reality is George is coming to town in a couple of weeks and as of right now I would very much lean Georgia but who knows what happens the rest of the way maybe they run the table and sneak in the back door but on the other side LSU saved themselves there was a moment there where it looked like LSU season was crumbling around them and frankly if they had lost that game they got A&M coming up Arkansas they have a couple other games that could have gone sideways in a hurry now you have that confidence and now you can move forward into that Arkansas game this upcoming weekend then you go to Kyle Field for a big game against Texas A&M you go 2-0 there they're very likely in the playoff if they take care of their business the rest of the way they're very likely in the playoff now you go 1-1 then you probably got to beat Alabama so we'll figure out what happens going forward but LSU did the thing that they needed to do and that's just save their season get that one point win and keep moving on but how LSU won was absolutely huge I think the biggest one to me was Garrett Nussmeyer as resilient as any quarterback I've seen and frankly it was far from a perfect game it was all over the place at Dimes the first half was not nearly where he wanted it to be but he made big plays down the stretch he made every single throw you needed him to make in that fourth quarter they had 84 yards rushing on the day so a lot was going to be put on his shoulders and he answered the bell he was really really incredible in this one and one of those reasons that I love LSU so much throughout this year is this guy can make all types of plays if you give a little bit of time to work with and then defensive game plan for LSU was really really good this Ole Miss offense is I think everyone knows it's Trey Harris or pretty much no one else now Caden Lee stepped up in a huge huge way later on in that game when Trey Harris went down but seems like they're funneling it to one receiver it seems like at least in the past game it's relatively monotonous and Blake Baker took full advantage of a six acts six hurries and they were all over Jackson Dart and then got huge turnovers whenever they needed them they got some big ones and it's a difference in this Ole Miss LSU team being really really good and being on the fringe or being outside of the CFP having a defense that doesn't have to play great doesn't have to play dominant football make a couple of picks stop them in the red zone and you're being really really good shape going forward and then finally Ole Miss discipline was just not there today 12 penalties 110 yards it's one of those things that when you're playing a game in Death Valley at night you cannot give them mistakes you are not going to win if you give them the number of mistakes that Ole Miss did and that's the way it went down so a huge win for LSU puts them in a really good place and where they go from here I think Ole Miss you're not out of it you have every ability to run the table get into the CFP make everything that you wanted to happen happen but this was not the plan I can promise you that the plan was to be undefeated after this game and rolling through the towards the Georgia game undefeated and feeling great about what they can do possibly being the number one team in the country that was the plan for Ole Miss this year and it's falling a little bit flat but the reality is it's going to be it's going to be really interesting to see what this team is the rest of the season there's rumors around Lane Kiffin to Florida I won't necessarily put a lot of credence into that until you know we get real rumors around that but it'll be interesting to see how this team responds to see how they bounce back and the leadership on that team with a lot of transfers is going to be tested very very quickly throughout the rest of this year and then for Ole Miss this was as big of a win as they could have had I think at the beginning of the season LSU probably looked at their schedule and said okay Alabama is going to be a really tough one we're going to have to deal with that USC is going to be a really tough one we're going to have to deal with that and this one is going to be really tough you got to be able to get one of them you got to be able to get one of them and Ole Miss was the one that I think they were circling probably more than anyone else they were able to get it and that's absolutely huge cannot be more impressed with this defense it's not perfect by any means but if you got that pass rush if you have weeks weeks playing at an all SEC level you're going to be more than fine and the back end is really coming along not necessarily elite by any means but Zia Alexander made a big play you had P.J. Woodland making making good play ashen stamps was all over the place so a lot of good things happening L.C.U. and I think that defense is coming along a little bit faster than I expected it to but as I said the next two weeks are huge at Arkansas at Texas A&M you win those two and a lot of things happening in the hurry for LSU then we got Penn State USC and this one I don't know how USC lost this game I'll be totally honest with you it was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen in my life because it's what USC is at this point and it's very very odd to watch every single week they play a really really clean first half they're throwing the ball around the field they're doing a lot of really nice stuff keeping thing off pace woody marks was absolutely rolling and then Penn State comes out of the halftime and just tears them to pieces and wins this game 33 to 30 and overtime comes back comes back in a blink of an eye in the second half so a lot of stuff to go into with this L with this USC and LSU team but cannot be more impressed with this Penn State team or LSU Penn State and USC teams but could not be more impressed with Penn State I think it's one of those games that it's easy after the fact to say this USC team isn't real it's not at that big of a win for James Franklin yada yada yada yada this was huge going all the way out West playing a team that is going to be able to make your defense work for it is going to be able to stretch your defense out and make life tough for you getting that win is huge especially the way that this thing started you know Dylan a Drew Aller played not good football in the first half played probably one of the worst half I've seen him play in a while and then he came out in the second half the first two drives eight for eight a hundred and fifty five yards a touchdown on two drives in the second half he was incredible he did exactly what he needed to do and frankly I think that's the biggest development I've seen from him where you can have a game where everything goes wrong in the first half you regroup at half time and then tear him to pieces and that is exactly what he did he's one of those quarterbacks that he's wanted all types of ways this year he's won by tearing just from the jump just going off on a team which is West Virginia he won a game in Illinois that just had to take care of business had to take care of the ball not do anything crazy and they were going to win that game this one started really slow and then took off towards the end of that game so really really incredible stuff from Drew Aller cannot be more impressed with his progress throughout the year and I think he's one of those guys that could be as dangerous as anyone going forward but I want to get to something here really quickly that really kind of made me mad weirdly enough that a USC guy I don't necessarily care about the game but the handling of that last drive for USC was just coaching malpractice I have no earthly idea would link him or link him with Lincoln Riley was thinking in that moment I have no earthly idea how they were going to go about business they had the ball on the Penn State 49 yard line with a with a minute 27 left they ran three place during that time before the end of the game loss of two yards on a run pass at in bounds for six yards in an interception how does that happen and I understand Lane Kiffin said you know you don't want to give him another possession trust your guys you have every ability to throw the ball Miller Moss is a very very good quarterback and yeah if you get yourself into trouble then you'll live with that consequence but the idea that you have a you have yourself on plus territory with a minute and a half only needing a field goal to win a game and then one run of two of law of a loss of two yards totally changes that is insane to me so Lincoln Riley's got to figure that out I don't know if he doesn't fully trust these guys the way that he should I don't know what the situation is but the idea that he was fully content to go to overtime in this game instead of letting his guys get a chance to win in the regulation is just insane it was a while while misuse of that last couple of minutes and it costs a team the game but moving on to how Penn State was able to get the win oh before we do that I did want to give a shout out to Julian Fleming on that final drive for Penn State he made two catches that were absolutely remarkable 17 16 yards on two fourth downs that they very much needed Drew Aller put a ball just on a dart and he made great catches so frankly there was a little bit of worry about that pickup going into the season not necessarily getting on the field as quite as much as you want more than made up for picking him up in the portal he's been a really important player although not getting the ball quite as much as people kind of expected going into the season but moving on to Penn State how they were able to get this win the toughness late was really incredible and it's something that has kind of been a theme around USC's games go in the last little bit the toughness on one side is much much greater than the toughness on the other side they had a field goal from USC in the end of the third quarter field goal from Penn State touchdown from USC right after responded right back so the the ability to just say we're going to take hits we're going to take punches down the stretch of this game got a bit get back up got to be able to execute right afterwards really good stuff from this entire Penn State team and we got to talk about Tyler Warren this was incredible to watch and frankly I don't know how he kept getting open I have no earthly idea how USC was not picking him up literally the second he left the line and not leaving his pocket and frankly they did do that a couple of times didn't necessarily matter he did have a play where he snapped the ball and then cut a touchdown I don't know how I don't know why that's a play call in the book but Andy Cole Nikki got in his bag and it really worked for him and Tyler Warren made a ridiculous catch so that's a huge player for them I think one of the things that I would worry about is you don't want to put too much on your tight end you want to be able to spread the ball out a little bit more but at the end of the day he did plenty in this game did everything they needed to do and they get out with the win and now you can probably spread the ball out just a little bit more going forward and then a huge swing at a half time this is a game that frankly if USC was able to get out a half time score touchdown this thing would have been over it would have been I believe 27 to 6 not much that Penn State was going to be able to do and then it came out two drives two touchdowns 13 plays 165 yards and just 642 in game time and then USC out of the drive in between five plays 27 yards a punt and 336 so it was domination they got right back into this game very very quickly when it looked like they had nothing going offensively they exploded in the second half and did incredible things but where do they go from here I think for USC you who you are who you are at this point it's not necessarily a bad person because the reality or bad team because the reality is the defense has gotten a lot better you're playing a lot better defense you're playing much more physical you're doing a lot of the things that USC teams didn't do in the past couple of years doesn't change that this is frustrating a lot of USC fans looked at this year as a chance to kind of burst onto the scene in the big 10 make some really big plays you know beating LSU first week gave them a lot of hope but the reality is you're just not quite their personnel wise you don't have the big bodies up front that you need to you don't necessarily have the guys on the back end to be able to cover one-on-one with a lot of the wide receivers you're going to face it's going to be tough to deal with that's the reality it was always going to be a long rebuild I understand Lincoln Riley's in his third year there I would argue he's roughly in his fourth year because for his fault to be totally fair because he made the wrong defensive coordinator higher but the reality is Dianton Lynn's doing really incredible things over there I think they'll be fine it's just going to take a little bit more time than USC fans would like and then for the Penn State side this is huge it's absolutely massive James Franklin was getting very close to having another little can't win the big game moniker on his resume but at the end of the day get the win it's huge for this team's confidence because you just proved to yourself that you can get knocked down you can get punched in the face and come back from a very very deep deficit so absolutely incredible I think Drew Aller was one of the more impressive things about this game he was very very bad in the first half and then was able to flip the switch which was the big one worry I had about him going into this year is how did you respond to that adversity again because he didn't respond all that well last year was incredible in this game cannot wait to see what you can do the rest of the year and with Ohio State losing it looks like Penn State could be the higher ranked team when Ohio State goes to Penn State in a couple of weeks now Penn State's got to take care of business but the reality is really really incredible game in a couple of weeks cannot wait for that one but huge win for Penn State puts them on a really really good track for the CFP even if you lose to Ohio State and you're on the outside of the Big Ten title you're in no two ways about that so an absolutely huge win sets them up for a lot of success going forward USC you know the season didn't go the way you wanted no two ways about that but the reality is this offseason was always going to be the time when everything started to shift we'll see what happens then obviously a very frustrating start to the season and I tend to believe it's going to be pretty frustrating to end it but the reality is there's a very solid team moving in the right direction just need one more offseason to really get all into place but let's take our second break here and when we come back we got to get to a couple of teams that escaped with wins Alabama Tennessee and even Kansas State a little bit escaped with some wins and got some big wins going forward the rest of the season but we'll talk about some of the struggles for those two teams right after this so stick with us are you ready for more independence as a financial advisor are you ready for more growth and control over your future the independent registered welcome back everyone, we just talked about the Penn State and that LSU win both overtime wins that they badly needed, they're moving on and feeling very very good about where they sit in the CFP race and in their conference races, a couple of big wins down the stretch could put them in a very very good place going forward But we will get to that throughout the season obviously but oh wrong one, let's get into this because Bama, Tennessee, Kansas State escaped with some very very close wins, some wins that they very much needed and they got them but there's some issues No two ways about that, we'll get into South Carolina Alabama to start here and another week another really underwhelming Bama performance and the thing is it wasn't for the reasons that we saw in the Vandy game It wasn't for the same reasons that we saw it wasn't really the defense, that was a huge problem in this game, down the stretch did not play great football obviously but the reality was Alabama got out to a 14-point lead felt really good about where they were and then just kind of felt flat and I don't really know what happened there, I don't know if it's a energy thing, I don't know if it's a mentality thing, I don't know if it's a leadership thing but this has become kind of a pattern, you saw the Georgia game up 28-0, looked like those players took their foot off the gas just enough and it felt like that way in this game and they let South Carolina back into it, the safety everything got it got involved and it was all over the place, towards the end of that first half got back to a two-point lead for Alabama and then they just had to go to that, it was not pretty throughout this game, it was not something that Alabama fans wanted to see after the last after last week's performance but they're still alive, they got the win, they get to move forward and being able to figure out all the bad stuff about your team with a win is obviously a lot better than with a loss but it's one of those things that they're playing with fire right about now and I could see not only one but a couple more losses if they keep playing this way how they were able to win this game is they got the turnover battles, that is absolutely what they needed to do in this game, they won it 4-2, they had less yards, they were worse on third down, they had less time of possession but they won the turnover battle and that's really the end, I'll be all in a game like this, they were able to get that done and game just enough of a buffer in this game, the run defense was huge for Alabama, Lenora Sellers only having 19 yards on 16 carries, absolutely huge, you know, Rocket Sanders got going a little bit but not nearly as much as they needed them to, so really good stuff from that defensive front definitely did what they didn't do a week ago and held that run game in check and then the quick start was huge, you know, getting that touchdown to open the game made it feel like maybe this was going to be a blowout, didn't end up that way but they were up 14 relatively early in this game and then were able to just kind of write it out, you were able to figure out what was going on offensively and make a couple of mistakes and have a couple of things go wrong and then you were still able to make that last play in the end of the game, so it's one of those things that you look forward for both these teams, South Carolina, they're going to be a load to deal with, any team that faces them, frankly if you do not have one of the top five offensive in the entire country these advertisers are going to tear you to pieces, so Texas, Oregon, a couple other teams, you'll be okay, but everyone else be terrified whenever you play South Carolina because this is a very, very good team, not an easy schedule coming up by any means I don't expect them to finish on a win streak by any means but they can be just about anyone on that schedule, so definitely a team to watch going forward for Alabama, they escaped for the second time this season, that Georgia game got very, very close this one was, I don't want to say closer but very, very close as well, it was very dangerous there and the issues don't seem to be consistent, the only real one that I can figure out is for whatever reason this team does not have the needed mental toughness in those moments because you're up 14-0, you take your foot a little bit off the gas, you're up 28-0, you take your foot a little bit off the gas and people are going to come back in those games, they just are, they're going to be able to have the firepower to get themselves back in this and if Alabama keeps playing that way where they start fast, take their foot off the gas, let that team back in, they're not going to be successful this year, period and then we got Tennessee, this one, I don't know how Florida lost this game guys, I have no earthly idea how they were able to pull that off but that's Billy Napier, that's what he does but at the end of the day, Tennessee gets away with one here as well, frankly, I thought Florida, uh, this something actually in the game that I'm thinking of Florida probably should have gotten, gone for two when they did tie the game late in the game, I just felt like you take your shot when you have it, you have grammurs out, the offense isn't really rolling the way that you wanted it to just give him a shot to win that game, but at the end of the day, went to overtime, Tennessee does get the win and Tennessee has a problem that I did not think they were going to have and it is Niko Yumaliava, this is something that I felt pretty good about this guy coming into the season and played really good football at the start, but against his power four opponents of the year three touchdowns, six turnovers, so they're going to need more from coming forward because you can't run a Tennessee offense if you can't have those explosive plays down field and especially trying to beat a team like Alabama that that back end is acceptable, if you can't take advantage then it doesn't much matter, so they're going to have to get that under control, they're going to have to get that figured out and it can't just be Dylan Sampson, but it was in this game 27 carries, 112 yards, three touchdowns, he was incredible and he's going to have to carry him in a lot of different ways going on the rest of the season, incredible back, one of the best in the entire country and he's more than enough for the challenge, but you keep asking him all to do all these things at some point it's going to catch up to him, that's just the reality of football, but in the second half of this game Florida had really nothing going offensively, but especially in the run game Montcha Johnson going down early in this game absolutely was huge for Tennessee, really hurt Florida, definitely one of those things that he was rolling right along, I believe had 6.5 yards per carry was absolutely tearing people to pieces and then he went out and he ended with 40 carries 138 yards and 3.5 yards per carry, so it was not nearly the team that it was with Montcha Johnson on the field and they're going to need him on the field and playing really good football going forward I tend to believe they're probably going to need Grandmurs as well and doesn't seem all that great that he's going to be back, hate that for him, very very talented player, but also living in the backfield kind of goes with that second half run game, they had 3 sacks, 12 tackles for loss in this game, they were all over the place, a ton of guys got involved in that one and it was one of those things that you knew Florida was going to be kind of taken advantage of by that D line and they did plenty in this game, no two ways about that, so where they go from here, this one hurts for Florida, no two ways about that, it felt like a moment where you kind of flush all of the terrible stuff of this season away and just for a moment, feel really good about your team, get that big win, go home, be partying, all of that type of stuff, but you come up a little bit short and frankly I think it's just kind of the microcosm is probably a better way to put it, of Billy Napier's time at Florida, they play really good football, they have really talented players pretty much all over the field, they have guys that can make plays, they have a couple of moments to win games and then Billy Napier just makes the wrong decision and it's one of those things that's been happening in the last couple of years, Florida fan knows what's coming, everyone knows what's coming but at some point it's going to have to and then Florida can really get started, I hate to say that but the reality is the rest of the season is about staying upright more than anything else for Florida and then for Tennessee, same boat as Bama, you've got to be careful, going forward you have everything still on the table, so many things you can do this year but the reality is you've got to be able to execute at a really high level, you've got to be able to get Niko Imali off of going in, if you can't, you're going to be in a ton of trouble going forward but going to be incredible to watch those teams going forward, it's one of those things that I don't know how to think about them, if I'm being totally honest with you but as of right now, I do think they're really good teams, I do think they have every ability to bounce back and go forward, obviously whoever wins that game this upcoming weekend will feel in a much better place, I would argue that's kind of an Ole Miss LSU situation where you lose it, you're probably out of the CFP, if you win it, you have a very good chance of getting in, so going to be a crazy game up there and we'll get to that in time but we're going to take our second break here, we will get to that Kansas State Colorado game here in two seconds but wanted to push that to the fourth segment here, running a little bit long on time, so had to push that just a touch but oh in fact, what am I talking about? I have time to do this, what am I doing? Let's get forward with this because the reality is we got to talk about this game, I have a little bit more time here to do it than I thought but Kansas State, Colorado, huge game over there in Boulder, lived up to the hype, Colorado, anytime they're in a football game, just go ahead and tune in because it's always going to end crazy but the reality is, KSU had a chance to put this game away, up 10 in the fourth quarter and then Colton Hood picks off Avery Johnson, takes it back to the believe the five yard line, sets up a Colorado touchdown and this game changes in a second, he was absolutely, it was pretty much done away with, if I'm being totally honest, but Colorado has that thing, they have that thing that keeps them back in games and frankly that thing is named Shader Sanders, he's absolutely remarkable, pretty much took the team on his back the way he does in a lot of these games had almost 400 yards passing, I believe 34 for 40 in the past, he was just incredible and especially with Travis Hunter with Jimmy Horne leaving with injuries, a lot on his plate and he answered the bell but I said going into this game that Colorado was going to assert themselves as big 12 contenders in a loss. I think that's exactly what they did, you know, they're a team that's still walking a pretty fine tight rope, you know, you're not going to be able to run the ball, you're going to have to be able to throw, they had negative 29 rushing yards in this game, so you're not going to be able to run the ball, you're going to have to throw the ball, you're going to have to play opportunistic games, but they continue to do that pretty much every single week, they're able to answer the bell, so they are very much a contender in my eyes as we go forward, how they were able to win this game, Kansas State or Avery Johnson's fight in this game was huge because if you watch that BYU game a couple of weeks ago where they just got torn to pieces, there was a pick early on in that game for Avery Johnson, he crumbled, he had no answer after that he did not necessarily look at the look very confident out there by any means. This game he was able to bounce back, you know, you give away a pick like that, there's a lot of things that can go wrong, but he responded right away, 50 yards touchdown to J.S. Brown and really did everything this team needed him to do, so it's a huge, huge step in his development and one that he very much needed to take after that game at BYU. And then you had a cushion in the fourth quarter, this is going to be a huge thing for every team that plays Colorado going forward, make sure you have a lead in that fourth quarter because Colorado's got some magic up their sleeves, they always do with Shadir Sanders with all those receivers, they're going to make place, you have to make sure you have at least ten points because KSU had ten points and that was just enough to win this one, but the reality is getting that ten point cushion was huge in this game, there's a reality where Colorado could have come back anyway but anyone playing Colorado, if you can dominate the third quarter, set yourself up for a good for a comfortable fourth quarter, you're going to feel okay at least and then as it is with frankly a lot of Colorado matchups, the other team dominated the line of scrimmage and in a lot of different ways. Now this D line for Colorado did get home a ton, I don't want to take anything away from them, but KSU was all over, Shadir Sanders, six sacks, had eight hurries in this game, on the other side, DJ Giddens had 182 yards rushing, five yards per carry, was very effective. Now the Colorado defensive line did a really good job of getting pressure but didn't get home too too often, definitely one of those things that they're just going to have to continue to improve on year over year and at some point, they'll be a really, really good team in that front. I think Jordan Seton is going to develop into an absolute monster over there. And then where they go from here, I think for Colorado, this team is for real, the schedule coming forward is going to be a nightmare, they got a lot of games that could go either direction, they got a lot of games against teams that are very physical and are going to run the ball, so a lot of things to figure out, no two ways about that, but this is a really good team, there's a team that has every ability to beat everyone on that schedule to possibly go to the big 12 title and then we'll see what happens. I'm still a little bit wary of that happening, I tend to believe they're going to fall somewhere in the eight win, nine win, probably eight win mark if I had to imagine, but at the end of the day, nothing is off the table for this team, definitely a tough loss, but you only have one loss in conference, so I have every ability to bounce back, K state stayed in the fight, that was what this game was about, it was about getting that win, being towards the top of the conference and allowing yourself a seat at the table that is getting more and more crowded by the week, but if Avery Johnson's confidence continues to roll, this team is going to be scary down the stretch, they can win every single game and they can win it fairly comfortably, but now we'll take that break, that's what I was talking about a little bit ago, we'll take a break here, when we come back, we're going to get to a couple other top 25 games, we'll get to Texas just domination in the Red River rivalry, we'll get into Georgia struggling once again, we'll get into BYU, rolling Arizona and so much more right after this, so stick with us. We just talked about those a couple of overtime games and a couple of games where a team just escaped with a win. Very, very lucky to keep in that fight and Alabama may be the chief among them. But let's get into a couple of top 25 games that were crazy this weekend and they got lost in the bunch, no two ways about that, but there were a number of results that might surprise you even seeing them today because you might have missed them on Saturday, but this is one you did not miss. Texas just dominates Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry, a huge win for this team and frankly it felt a lot like the Michigan game. Other than the slow start from Texas, they were able to get a couple of turnovers and quick scores at the end of the first half and that was the end of the game. Pretty much end all be all, Oklahoma was not scoring 20 points in this game and if you watch the game, it was very unlikely they were getting to 10. But the reality is, this one could have been ugular, no two ways about that, Texas probably could have pushed on their neck just a little bit more, but no need to, right? You're able to get out with a win and really more than anything else, you know, Quinn Evers didn't start as crisp as you wanted, had one turnover early on in the game, had a rushing touchdown, had a passing touchdown. So settled them pretty nicely throughout the game, but did have that early mistake and then they just went to Trey Wisener and he was absolutely remarkable in this game. 13 carries 118 yards, one touchdown, I'd have to imagine that is the number one running back for Texas going forward and just huge plays left and right. And he got bailed out a little bit, almost had a second touchdown, but Silas Bolden kind of didn't steal that from by any means, but saved him a little bit on that run. But Texas is one of the best teams in the country, no two ways about that. Now we can talk about the schedule and how aggressive the opponents that they played is, I fully understand that argument and I share that argument, but Georgia will be the first big time test for this team. All that being said, if you watch this team, if you watch how they go about business, it's hard to find any holes. There are a couple of very, very minor holes, but the reality is, if Quinn Evers is on the field and if they're playing a team that doesn't have an elite offensive line, they're going to be fine. They're a really, really good team for Oklahoma, this offseason is massive. They have to be able to figure out that offense. There are so many different things that have to get in place. They have to do better getting the offensive lineman that they need. They probably have to get a quarterback because as much as I love Michael Hawkins, I think he's going to be a great player in time. He's just not all the way there yet and I don't necessarily think he's going to be all the way there in 2025. So I would venture to say it's going to be a very, very different offense for Oklahoma right down to the coordinator, if I had to imagine. Then we got to get to this game and weird, this Georgia team is just different than a lot of the Georgia teams of the past. And frankly, Carson Beck broke the UGA passing record in this game with 459 yards through the air. That's all well and good. That's really fun. No two ways about that. That is not the way Georgia wants to win football games. That is not the way that they're going to win a national title, just plain and simple. Carson Beck is an incredible quarterback. I've talked about this time and again, he at the very least to me is a top three, top five quarterback in this country. The thing is, he should not be asked to do that much. He doesn't need to be asked to do that much in the majority of UGA games going back because they had a run game because they had an offensive line that was going to be able to impose their will. Didn't happen in this one. They ran for 150 yards in this game. 52 of them came on and ended around to Anthony Evans. 25 carries for 98 yards. It's just not nearly good enough for this team. So this old line without Tate Rallage is an entirely different group and they got a lot of stuff to figure out. No two ways about that. I do want to give some love to Michael Van Buren. He had his first two starts at Texas and at Georgia. This is a very talented kid. In the Texas game, you saw little flashes. He was playing pretty good football and making some plays with his legs. But in this game, 20 for 37, 306 yards, three touchdowns through the air, only one INT. Really, really incredible stuff, especially when your running game only gives you 79 yards to play around with. This is a very talented player and frankly, I think Mississippi State has to feel really good about the guy they got going forward. I did see the video rolling around online of Kirby Smart, essentially shoving Michael Van Buren and definitely could have gotten a lot worse. And Michael Van Buren took exception to that. But definitely a terrible look. I don't think he was trying to push the kid. I think it was an accident. I think it was an aggressive accident. No two ways about that. But I do think it was an accident. A very bad look. No two ways about that. Very good on Michael Van Buren for handling it the way that he did. But one of those things that whenever there's something around Georgia, it is going to get clipped. It is going to get torn apart on Twitter and Kirby definitely gave him that opportunity this past weekend. I don't think it's a huge deal by any means, but definitely something that wasn't the greatest look in the world. But for Georgia in general, they're a good team. They're a really good team, I would argue. They're not a title one, at least as of right now. They have players on that field. I think the fact that Dylan Bell is not on that field more consistently is insane to me. They got to get that O line going. Tate Radledge pretty much has to get back. The run game has to give them more. Frankly, if this is the team that shows up to Austin, Texas in a week's time, they're going to get torn to pieces. They're going to get done to them the exact same thing that was done to Michigan, the exact same thing that was done to Oklahoma. They might be able to score a couple more points on Texas, but the reality is you're not keeping up with this offense. If you're putting out that defensive performance on Saturday, just plain simple. And then we got this Iowa State team. They just keep plugging along, keep playing really, really good football over there in the Big 12, and we'll get to the other team. That's doing just that here in a second. But a really, really good team. It was one of those games that at halftime, it was a little bit sketchy. There was a close game here in West Virginia. It looked like they had some fighting him on Cole Miner Day. It was incredible to watch all of that. The Cole Miner's leading him out of the tunnel was a really special moment. No two ways about that. But coming out of halftime, Iowa State forced two INTs, had two 10-page touchdowns. They just really buried West Virginia towards the early parts of the second half. Huge shout out to Carson Hanson, another running back that's popping up for Iowa State. 20 carries, 196 yards, three touchdowns. They've now had three different guys that have been there running back one at any given point this year. And they've all produced at a ridiculously high level. So huge shout out to that offensive line because they're open big time holes. And then I said last week that West Virginia was going to need to run for at least 200 yards to get this one done. They ran for 150. And they threw 32 passes to 31 rushes and Iowa State got two picks. Was never going to be a winning formula for West Virginia if they were throwing more passes than they were running and couldn't get anything going running. So that's the reality of that game. Kind of the read that I had on it going in and that's what happened. But Iowa State continues to be one of the most consistent commodities in a conference that is the furthest thing from consistent. So really impressive stuff. They're playing UCF at home, which doesn't look nearly as scary as it did to start the season. And then they got to buy before Texas Tech. That is going to be the game that a lot of things are going to be defined in this conference. So definitely watch out for that one. But Iowa State keeps rolling along and maybe proven some people wrong in the process. And then we got to talk about BYU, the other team in the Big 12 that is rolling right along. I was very wrong about this team in general, but about this game. I thought Arizona State was going to be able to pull one of those Big 12 moments, a team that has really no business winning on the road. And another team was going to be able to get it done. Didn't even remotely happen. There wasn't even a chance of this happening. If you watch this game go down, there were so many different things that BYU did on the defensive side of the ball to make life tougher. Arizona won the turnover battle four to one. They were incredible. Absolutely awesome. Only got 3.7 yards per carry for Arizona. Never trailed in this game after they tied it in seven. It was domination from BYU. Pretty much from start to finish. Jake Redslaf continues to execute at a really high level. 18 for 32, 2-18, two touchdowns, no turnovers. That's all you need. If you have that defense on the other side, you are going to be more than fine. Just playing mistake-free football, playing defense, and really just suffocating teams at the end of the day. And that's about it for Arizona this year. It was a team that coming in, you had some worries about the coaching changes, about a couple of the players leaving. But you did feel like no Fafita and T-Mac are in that room. They have a shot. But it came up a little bit short and it was proven over the last couple of weeks that as good as T-Mac is, you can't just funnel the ball to him. And you have to have more guys that scare teams in. They just didn't really have those guys. So a tough year for Arizona, obviously still planning to play for going forward, establish yourself in this conference, play really good football. But at the end of the day, any chance of a big 12th title, probably out the door for Arizona if I had to imagine. Pitt survives again. I cannot believe this team keeps getting away with wins here, but they do. They played really, really interesting football, won a ton of different ways. And this one didn't really have Eli Holstein, did not play a good game at all. Only had 50% completion, two picks in this game. It was all about the defense and then it was all about Desmond Reed. This is one of the most remarkable players in the ACC. This year, 16 carries 120 yards, two touchdowns, 72 yards touchdown run. This guy was awesome and he's been awesome for quite some time over there at Pitt. So if you're looking to watch anyone in the ACC right about now, Desmond Reed might be where he wants to start. He's absolutely remarkable and him and Eli Holstein are becoming one of the better backfield duos in the entire conference. But ACC is, excuse me, Cal has lost three ACC games, one to Florida State where they just couldn't get much going offensively but did miss two field goals. They lost a game to Miami where they gave up a 25 point lead, had some ref stuff that made that one sting a little bit more. And then in Pitt, you missed a 40 yard field goal with a chance to win. So just a really tough stretch for this team. I think they're doing an incredible job, cannot say enough good things about Justin Wilcox and the job that he's doing over there. But at the end of the day, losing those games, it feels a lot worse. So it's one of those things that I think they're going to be able to build into a really fun program out there and be dangerous going forward. But you missed the mark a couple of times this year and at this point is probably too much of a hill to climb. But as for Pitt, they're going to be a really, really tough team to beat. They're getting into the tough part of their schedule. They got SMU or Clemson at Louisville coming up on their schedule. So it's not going to be easy by any means. But if Eli Holstein can get back on track and stay upright and play really good football, this team can do a lot of really fun things this year. No two ways about that. I would probably venture to say they're going to lose those games, but who knows? Very talented team that can put up points with just about anyone in the country. And then we got to talk about this one. I don't know how this happened, frankly, because I didn't know Illinois was capable of putting up 50. I definitely didn't know that Purdue was capable of putting up 49. But here we are. I talked briefly about this game last week and just said, I don't think Illinois is going to lose. It's one of those games that inexplicably Illinois will lose and kind of ruin a lot of the momentum they've had. And they didn't. They were able to avoid it by the skin of their teeth. And it was a very, very crazy game. Ryan Brown, the quarterback that came in for Purdue for Hudson card who went down injured last week, 18 for 26, 297 yards, three touchdowns through the year. He also had 17 carries, 118 yards on the ground. He was their offense. It was absolutely remarkable in a game where you're playing a pretty good defense, thrust into action. He's doing awesome stuff. It's absolutely incredible to watch that kid and maybe get a little bit going for Purdue. Maybe he shocks the world on Friday night and beats Oregon, but we'll get there when we get there. Illinois stays alive in this big 10 race. Obviously plenty to go for them and feels like a team that's probably going to stumble once more. Michigan comes to town this upcoming weekend. They get that one, then a lot of things happen very quickly. Illinois is not necessarily a team that is a fun little early season story. They are then a real team. They could possibly make a CFP run. Obviously got to deal with Michigan, but there's a team that definitely can. It's going to be really awesome to watch that. Huge bounce back from Illinois in some crazy circumstances down the stretch of this one. Great fight for Purdue. No two ways about that. And hopefully the offense is slowly finding itself. But as of right now, Illinois just got enough. They just got enough. They're able to stay alive. And at the end of the day, in a crazy world of college football right about now, that's plenty as far as I'm concerned. But let's take our final break here. And when we come back, we're going to talk about just all the other games we didn't get a chance to get to. Utah got upset all the way back on Friday. It feels like it was a million years ago. We also had Louisville knock off another undefeated this weekend and Vanderbilt continue the run that we absolutely love to watch. So we'll get to all that right after this. So stick with us. We just talked about some of the big time performances from the top 25 teams. Texas gets a big time win, dominating win in the Red River rivalry. We also get BYU getting a huge win continuing their perfect season as well as Pitt. So a number of big time wins there, but let's get into a little bit of a whip around. We'll start actually with a top 25 team, and they gave us the lone upset of the weekend, having all the way back on Friday. So if you remember this game, Utah did lose to Arizona State 19-27 on Friday, and this one was really, really fun. It's becoming a little bit, it was a pseudo-pack 12 after dark, and I absolutely loved it. At the end of the day, Cam Skadibu was the story. 22 carries, 158 yards, two scores. He was absolutely remarkable. The other story was, Cam Rising was back in this game, and he did not look right by any means. 16 for 37, 209 yards, three touchdowns, frankly. If you're asking Cam Rising to throw 37 passes in a game, you're doing things wrong. That's just the reality of that situation. He is not someone, especially coming off an injury, that you should be relying on that heavily. But overall, he did not look healthy to me. They had the throws that he was making look like they had not a ton of juice on them, gave Arizona State's backs a ton of time to break on routes and things of that nature. So I don't know what happened behind the scenes. I don't know if we got to get you out there because this thing is going to get out of control really quickly. I don't know what that conversation was, but I can say pretty confidently. That was not 100% of Cam Rising, but huge respect to Kenny Dillingham. He deserves all the respect in the world. He was picked last in the Big 12 rankings going into the season. Utah was picked first. He just beat them on his own field. It was absolutely incredible to watch. You saw it after the game, how excited he was. He's one of those guys that I cannot wait to see succeed at a higher level. He's so incredible to watch. He's got just infectious energy and one of the best play callers in the sport. So absolutely love it. Five in one start in the Big 12 and very much on their way to at least being in the fight. You never know what happens going forward in the Big 12. So Arizona State, if they're able to run the ball like that and play solid defense, who's going to stop him at the end of the day? And then we got Iowa. How did this happen? They scored 40 points, guys. They didn't even score 25. They did 30. 30 would have been really cool. 40 is ridiculous. And it was obviously Caleb Johnson at the very center of it. 21 carries 166 yards, two touchdowns, but the reality was they were all over the place. It was incredible to watch this team. And frankly, it was an Iowa team that I didn't know what I was watching. I didn't know if it was an aberration. I didn't know if it was someone lying to me, but Iowa did this. They actually scored 40 points on a really good defense. Like Washington is not a scrubbed defense by any means. The travel definitely played a part here, but the reality is I was blown away. When I saw the final score for this one, I'll just put it that way. But for Iowa, you're in the fight. Like a lot of these teams that we've been talking about, you know, I'd be hard pressed to tell you that they're going to make a CFP run. But at the end of the day, they have every single chance. They'll probably be favored in pretty much every single game the rest of the way. So who knows what happens? I'm a little bit skeptical still, but if they're going to put up 40 points all of a sudden, then maybe they're a real team going forward. And then for Washington, just got put in a bad spot here more than anything else. Huge emotional win last week over Michigan. Travel all the way, play a really physical team. I didn't think they had a real shot in this game, and they really didn't have a shot in this game. I got to talk about Wisconsin because we talked about it last week when we were talking, when we were breaking down this game, just said Wisconsin just needs one of these. They need to give their fans something to look up at and say, "Hey, we were able to beat Rutgers. We were able to beat them on the road, beat them comfortably, you know, underdog going into that game." They beat the crap out of this team. They were really, really incredible. This offense is really starting to come together. 56 points last week, 42 this year, this time in. I understand 56 against Purdue is whatever. 42 against Rutgers is really impressive. I think they're doing a really, really good job. And Tawy Walker was at the very center of this thing. And it's one of those things. You look back at that Oklahoma offensive performance, and then you see Tawy Walker and Dylan Gabriel being some of the stories of the weekend. Rough, if you're a sooner fan. I'll just put it at that. But Tawy Walker was incredible. 24 carries 198 yards, three touchdowns. Braden Locke really found himself outside of that one INT. He was really incredible. And definitely a guy that's really getting comfortable in that offense, and they had explosive plays in this game. It's what Phil Longo came there to do, and they're finally finding those. A little bit more consistently. This is a team that I don't think they're going to do anything this year necessarily, but they're saving a little bit of that energy going forward into 2025, and they badly need it on the recruiting trail. And Rutgers just taking a little bit of tumble. They took a tough loss to Nebraska a couple of weeks ago and just didn't really recover. A very, very fun team, one of those teams that was playing really good football, but we get this pretty much every single year. We get a fun team that's 4-0, 5-0 to start the season, and we really want them to run the table. It tends to come to an end. And that's what happened with Rutgers. Really like this team. I love Kyle Mondegai. I love what Greg Shiano's doing over there, but this was going to be a little bit too much for them. But moving on, Georgia Tech, this finish was incredible. This was a game where Georgia Tech was in a position UNC scores with, I believe, about a minute left, maybe a little bit less than a minute left. Frankly, Georgia Tech gets back on the field and they did the thing that a lot of teams do, where they throw one pass. If it doesn't give them what they wanted to, they're going to run the ball and see what happens. You know, if you go for four yards, we'll go to overtime, whatever. That's more than fine. Then Jamal Haines took it 68 yards to the house, and they won the game from 41 to 34. This was a Paul Johnson special. They had to, he had to feel really good. Smiling, watching this game. 48 carries, 23 passes on the day, 371 yards on the ground, five touchdowns. That was what he wanted. No two ways about that. I hard pressed to figure out, I believe that Brent Key was sending him a little bit of a message just saying you're still a part of this program. No two ways about that. But remarkable performance, they took advantage of them all day on the ground. Got, I believe, three running backs over 60 yards. It was incredible from this Georgia Tech attack. And Buster Faulkner continues to be a really good play caller in the sport. And then for UNC, they got a really good performance from Jacobic as well. 13 for 31, 209 yards, one touchdown through the year. 13 carries 73 yards, two touchdowns on the ground. It's a Georgia Tech defense that is a little bit more attackable. No two ways about that. But it at least gives you a little bit of momentum and a little bit of confidence in your quarterback going forward. And that's huge for this team. Then we got Louisville. They ended a little bit of a fun run from Virginia, a very fun team that was four in one. They were playing good football. They had gotten a big win. And then Louisville had to kind of ruin it for everyone. But the reality is a very fun game here. I think Louisville needed this win about as badly as anyone. Three in a row would totally bury your season and would put you in a place where you're not even coming back in the crazy ACC with three losses. I can tell you that. So a huge win for him. I don't think they're going to make a ton of noise. They're one of those teams that I think is just going to be too inconsistent week to week. But they are a very dangerous team. If they can put it together, if they can get that defensive line going a little bit more, hit those deep shots, they can make some plays. No two ways about that. As of right now, wouldn't necessarily peg them into the ACC title by any means or really anywhere close. But definitely a team that could cause some problems. They do have the reality is a lot could change this upcoming weekend in the ACC. Just in general, Louisville has Miami, Virginia has Clemson. Let's just say they both knock them off. It's chaos in the streets. We're having to figure out SMU would probably be the top team in the ACC and everything would be all out of whack. I don't necessarily think that's going to happen, but we'll get there. Maybe my mind will change before I pick that game. Gotta give love to Vanderbilt. This is one of the most impressive wins of the weekend. It just got overshadowed by all the other impressive wins of the weekend because Vanderbilt had the craziest week a lot of those kids probably have ever had. I know it was the craziest week that Diego Pavia ever had, but they bounce back. They refocus, they go on the road to a not an easy place to play and get a big time win. And there's a very good defense on the other side. Diego Pavia did have an INT in this game, but the reality is too many completions other than that, two touchdowns over 50 yards rushing, he continues to be one of the most important transfers in college. Football, frankly, I am very, very close to shooting him up in the Heisman Odd just because find a more valuable player to what that team does. I can't find one across the country. He's been absolutely remarkable, one of those guys that if he leaves the field, I don't think this team even puts up a fight against a lot of the teams they're playing. When he's on the field, that team plays with a little bit more energy. He makes all of the right plays, could not be more impressed with that kid and cannot wait to see what he can do the rest of the season. But here's the thing about this, Vanderbilt gets a big win here. Absolutely awesome, keeps the train rolling, goes to five and two doing things that no one expected them to do, including myself. They get ball state this upcoming weekend. And then Texas comes to town, and that is a Texas team that could be number one in the country coming off a win over Georgia. You can't write it up like that. I don't know how that happened, I don't know how the scheduling happened on that one, but Texas got to be ready, because that could be a scary, scary moment and Vanderbilt could do another ridiculous thing. Now, I'd be a little bit skeptical, but we'll get there when we get there. Maybe something, there's a little bit more magic over there at Vandy, but remarkable performance of one that they very much needed to get and keeps them alive for a lot of things this year. Memphis gets a huge time win over USF. This one became a slugfest in a hurry, and it was something that I kind of expected. It took the under in this game, and it was one of those games that a lot of stuff around this one. I don't think I need to tell you guys, those kids have been dealing with and coaches have been dealing with stuff that I can't even fathom. And frankly, getting out there and playing a football game, remarkable. That is what we call true mental toughness. There's plenty of mental toughness around the college football world, but it was on full display in this game. No two ways about that. No Byron Brown in this game made UCF's life pretty much impossible. No two ways about that. He is a lot of their offense. Bryce Archie just was put into a really, really tough spot and didn't play great football. 22 for 41, 234 through the year, 1INT, just not pretty. And kind of what you expected with Byron Brown not being in the game. Not sure what the status is going forward, but USF missed the mark this year. They started the year with two just ridiculous games against Alabama and Miami and weren't able to recover. It's always really tough. I think this is a very talented team. I think Alex Goldish is an absolute dude at quarterback at head coach, but a very, very talented team just got ahead of them a little bit. I think if they play one of those two games, Alabama or Miami, they're probably in a little bit better shape. But at the end of the day, a really fun team won that fought and scheduled teams that a lot of teams are scared to schedule. So absolutely loved that from them. Memphis really dominated on the ground. That's going to be a huge thing for them going forward. Only allowed 24 rushing yards on 19 carries for USF, which is another real reason why Byron Brown was missed. And then 4.7 yards per carry. So if they can do that going forward, they're in really good shape. And a team that very much is at the head of the table really when you talk about the CFP race. Maybe not the head on the table for the CFP race with Boise State probably at the head. And then we got this one. Army gets a big time win again over UAB. The service academy just continued to roll other than Air Force. All love to Air Force. But at the end of the day, Army and Navy have been incredible to watch this year. I absolutely love it. One of the best stories in the entirety of college football. They've been one of the most dominant teams in college football. Every single one of their games, they bury the team on the other side. So could not be more impressed with Jeff Monkett and Company doing an incredible job out there. And then Bryson Daly is a show to watch. He's absolutely incredible. Three for seven passing 102 yards, one touchdown passing. 12 carries, 136 yards, four touchdowns on the ground. This kid's awesome. We talked about Diego Pavia. He might be just as important if not more so. He's absolutely incredible to this team. And frankly, they continue rolling on. Who knows what happens going forward? They have ECU this upcoming weekend and a bye. They could very easily be undefeated walking into that Notre Dame game. And then who knows what happens. But at the end of the day, it's one of the best stories of the year. Whenever you get to see Army and Navy in the conversation, believe they were ranked in the AP for the first time since 1960. So really cool. Cannot get enough of that. Very much want them to run the table and set up just chaos at the very end of the season. But plenty of time to go there. We'll obviously keep you updated. But that'll do it for this lengthy show. I had to get a ton in. Incredible weekend. A week seven that we circled all the way back in probably April. It lived up to the hype. It was absolutely incredible. Great performances all across the weekend. The only one that didn't hold up their end of the bargain is Oklahoma. And frankly, it was going to be hard to against that Texas team. So really remarkable weekend. Cannot wait for this upcoming weekend, which has a lot of incredible ones too.
