This is the Canucks central post-game show. Landestruppe leaves for Zellweger off the bench starting down the left side. He scores. Quick shot by all in Zellweger finds his way past Arthur Shelov's and the young Anaheim defenseman has his first NHL goal. Glinstruppe behind the Knock Knack, trying to wrap around. Is it right? They score! Top of the crease, Mason, McTavish, beats Arthur Shelov's and the Ducks get a couple of goals in quick succession early in the third period. With instant reaction from the players and coaches. Miller gets it right corner, took Garland behind the net set, right past Joshua Scors! Connor Garland behind the net finds Dakota Joshua all the loan to the top of the crease. And Joshua scores his second to the afternoon to re-establish the Vancouver lead. It's three to two. For your say, on the official home of the Canucks, Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network. Canucks wrap up their nine-game home stand with a five, three-in-one record beating the Anaheim Ducks three to up to 100 points on the season for your playoff-bound Vancouver Canucks. And this is the Canucks central post-game show presented by the #5 Orange on Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network. Satyar Shah with Biknazar are going to bring in Randy Genda into the conversation in just a moment. Get your phone calls in, 604-280-0650 or toll-free, 1-888-275-0650. You can also get your thoughts into our Dunbar number, talk text inbox 650-650. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you pick up the two points, the connects are going to the playoffs, they're trying to fend off the Edmonton Oilers who beat these Anaheim Ducks 6-1 yesterday and they're nipping at the Canucks' heels for the top spot in the Pacific Division. So it's all about getting results, however, it was not a convincing victory for the Vancouver Canucks, just barely holding on to beating the Anaheim Ducks and you know what, Randy, the thing is, sometimes a team that lost a night before, it's the National Hockey League, the Anaheim Ducks are not a good hockey team, back-to-back and all, but they would have some extra desire and you can never take an opponent lightly, that's for sure, right? But if you have a two-goal lead against Anaheim, in the third period, you can cough it up and that's what the Canucks did. Now Garland and Dakota Joshua saved the day in the Canucks going away with the victory, but it was not a very convincing effort overall. Yeah, a bit of a dicey third period there as you look like, it looks like it's going to be a comfortable third period, but the way that Anaheim started the period off and more importantly, the way that Vancouver started the third period off, just not skating, maybe not moving their feet enough and a little bit of puck watching on both of those goals, sure the one, Zellinger scores, tight angle, not loving that goal, but the way you respond after allowing that goal is not the way that you want to. You're not moving your feet, you're doing three players drifting to one side, McTavish all by himself, but the key thing is you pick up the two points and that's something that I'm sure Rick Talkett will have his thoughts, he didn't look pleased in the third period when he was sitting on the bench and sorry, excuse me, standing on the bench. So the coach will want more from his players because you're right, Zell, this is a team that played yesterday, they got spanked by the Oilers and for the Canucks, you pick up the two points, you hit 100, but the bar is higher in the city now, especially when you're expected to do something in the playoffs, so you take the two points, but I'm sure the coach will be talking to his guys to say hey guys, that's not good enough. Yeah, overall, it's just not the type of third period you want to have, especially against his Anaheim Ducks team, but the one thing I will give them a lot of credit for in the third, that was a horrible call against Noah Julesin for that tripping call. I wouldn't call it a phantom call, Julesin can get a stick slightly on the skate, so there's a stick there, I don't think the stick does much to push him over, but it's a penalty, a weak penalty, but the Canucks kill it off, instead of melting down and letting that cost you the game, the Canucks kill the penalty off, get the game winning goal, so give them a lot of credit for doing that because there's been some bad calls going against them and they haven't been able to get the kill and they were able to get that kill in the third. For sure, and even in the middle of the ice, there's nothing all night for Anaheim on the power play, it was all perimeter stuff, so I think that resilience on the peak is something that they needed and special teams, boys, they get two power play goals, they definitely needed that. Well, situational penalty killing, right, as much as Rick Talk has mentioned, situational power plays, tie game opportunities, chance to extend the lead, whatever it is, the inverse is just as true, here's a pivotal moment, and yeah, you got to block that out of what just happened, shoot it a bit of penalty, whatever, you got a job to do, and in that moment, they do that job on that penalty kill, so that's a big one. Certainly, you know, it's now, now it's a trend. I don't people have mentioned before, it's like, hey, blown leads here, multi goal leads, wouldn't you get to this stage? This is now the fifth one since the all-star break. Now it's a little alarming and jarring, and in a scenario where it's back-to-back team here, traveling, not exactly the most inspired opponent at times, and that to me is, hey, get out of here with two points, it ends the homestand, but there's still some things to work on before game 83. You know, they talk about, if you have a prolonged homestand, it's easy to kind of put your feet up a little bit and relax. They can let us go 5, 3, and 1 on this nine game homestand, and I mean, it's a winning record and everything, but some of these performances look like they're a bit too comfortable at home a little bit, didn't they? It seemed like, and we talked about this maybe early on on the homestand where, for coaches, you probably want to have a four or five game homestand because what's one of the things you want to keep going here? Obviously, the practice time is great, but you want to build a bit of a rhythm here where you're essentially saying, all right, guys, get into your set schedule on the road. We're going to, you know, it's very business-like, when you're at home for nine straight games, it's tough to have that mentality the same way, so I think in a way, yeah, it's a winning record, but I have a feeling the coach will be very happy to hit the road here. Three games on the road, you can kind of hunker down on being with your team and getting them to think, kind of like they were guys right before the all-star break. It was, you know, some grueling road trips, no doubt, but this team was laser focused. Maybe the last couple of games we haven't necessarily seen that. Well, then LA Vegas game, where the last two road games, and that's when they kind of came out of that all-star break funk, can you think, okay, it settled now, and what do you use this nine-game homestand to springboard into the playoffs? It started okay against Winnipeg, anything, all right, they're into it. Now it does feel like you got to re-jump back into that mentality here to get ready for the playoffs. Well, and one of the things that we were tracking in this game was the new line combinations, right? J.T. Miller playing with Garland, and with Dakota Joshua, a huge performance with Joshua. We'll get to him in a second here, two goals, great performance from him. Trying to finally, as Pederson, some line mates in some chemistry, Hoglander has played with Pederson consistently now for a few weeks, Brock Besser with Pederson here tonight. You know, I know a lot of people are texting in about Pederson. The takes are there about Pederson, as you would imagine, anytime he's not great, and even if the Canucks win or lose, right now he's under the microscope, he didn't have a strong game again. Now, maintenance day yesterday wasn't at practice. Trying to get him going for the playoffs, to me, is becoming the number one, I'm not sure if I'm going to go like concerned here and everything, but that's my number one issue that has to get rectified for the playoffs, how do you get number 40 back to a level where he's playing like a star? Yeah, it's a priority, right? This is a JT Miller's line, we'll talk about that a little bit later, I'm on, I'm sure, but you know, you're okay with that line, they're doing their thing, whatever iteration it is. We've seen it with JT Miller and Brock Besser, we've seen it now with Dakota Joshua and Connor Garland, that's cool, they're doing their job. With the Pederson line, you gotta win your matchup, simple as that, you gotta be able to drive play, and I like Neil's Hoglander's game, I thought he was, you know, that jerk factor, super pest, he was that guy away from the puck between the whistles, but with the least Pederson, can you find that moment where he's that potential game breaker, or at the very least, the territorial advantage is his line providing that consistently enough, and with the trio, the last couple of games, we haven't necessarily seen that, and part of that is, hey, maybe this player is dealing with something, right? You talked about the maintenance day, you talked about, just overall, is a player 100% right? Very few players are at this point of the season, so that's the reality of the NHL season, but for this team to be successful, you're gonna have to find that trio, we know who the duo is, Hoglander and Pederson do a good job, but what is that trio, and, guys, it's kind of been the story all season long, it has, even when Andre Cosmenko was on this team, you're still looking for that player, and unfortunately, I don't think we've found that perfect fit yet. One thing that's really alarming, it's one shot attempt, now the other day, it was 11 shot attempts for at least Pederson, this one is one, it's on goal, but there was that moment in the power play, second power play of the game, there's about a minute left in it, and he gets past on his own entry, and he's past the forward pressure of the Ducks, and it's Lundstrom, I think, kind of fake reaching for him, and he just got us to cut into the middle, and there's space to cut into the middle, go get a good shot off, it's past to use, and they set everything up, which is sure nice, but there's that opportunity to play the game, rather than be mechanical, was the word Richtaki used the other day. There was another moment as well, where maybe the puck was bawling a little bit, but remember on the first power play, I believe, where he's trying to kind of settle it, but he delays so long that that opportunity, not only is Doustal set, but everybody in front of Lucas Doustal as well, are in a position where they're ready to deal with that rebound, so whether that's a delay based on, you know, just confidence, whether that he's looking for other options, but that one second or half a second makes all the difference in the world. So that power play, that's his only shot on goal. Yeah, that's his only shot attempt through the pole evening, early, early in the game. It's, tonight, like, we're gonna get a lot of text about it, or today, we're gonna get a lot of text about it, and I understand why. Absolutely. As far as Dakota Joshua was concerned, probably the best positive today, maybe, right, Arter Silobs, I mean, probably made more saves than needed to in the third period, to be honest, but Dakota Joshua, incredible goal on the power play between his leg, goal of his career, up to 15 now, gets a game-winning goals, well, another great play by Carter Garland behind the net. I mean, Dakota Joshua probably connects best player tonight. For sure. And he got to the middle of the ice. Yeah. Both of those goals, the power play, of course, he's gonna get there a little bit more room to operate, but the game-winning goal, credit to Connor Garland, you see what Anaheim, they were kind of a mess behind their own net, there's two or three players kind of hovering around Garland, he takes them behind the net, and Dakota Joshua, all by himself, the goals were great guys. But the way he influences the game in terms of A, being that F1 that brings the pressure, there's a penalty that was called in the first period, he hits Lagison, and Lagison just rushes the puck behind the net, it goes to Connor Garland in that area, and the other defenseman is forced to take the penalty just because Lagison couldn't deal with that play, he couldn't deal with Dakota Joshua, the little subtleties in his game. The other way is, the way he can close so quickly on a player in the neutral zone, where you feel like you have time, and then all of a sudden, boom, it's gone because he's got a long reach, he skates well, and he's smart, it's not like he's running around looking for hits, the way he plays his angles to win back the puck or force mistakes, I think the development with Dakota Joshua offensively has been great, but he's a smart player and he's showing that when you play with J.C. Miller and Connor Garland, you know, there's a couple of guys that are highly skilled, but this guy's a very smart player and he can finish, and even in the second period guys, there was a couple of moments that they were unable to get him to the puck, but he found the soft areas, he's on the back post, he could have probably had three goals, so if one of those passes ends up landing. Well, they're PK in the second with him and J.T. He makes a great denial on his own entry, now Miller's got to clean it up and swoop it away, it's a guy, I'm lucky to get it out, but that all starts from Dakota Joshua denying that entry, also he takes a pass off the skate, makes a diving poke over to Blueger, they get his own exit, yeah, he was all over the ice tonight and gets us two goals, and even on the one between the legs, demanding the puck, he's waving a suitor to give me the puck and finally does get to him and then he creates something out of it. You want that urgency, you want that player who's coveting the puck and trying to create something and in that moment puts a highlight reel. That's some great development from this guy too, he came to Vancouver as a player that they're essentially taking a flyer on, hey, he's got the potential now, 15 goals scored demanding the puck, there's a real level of confidence, and you know what I like about his mentality guys is that he's kind of, you can see why him and Connor Garland play well together, because they've essentially got the same mentality of if there's a mistake on the ice, Ben Myers ended up kind of Dakota Joshua gave away the puck in the neutral zone, it goes to Myers, you know, potentially dangerous going back the other way, but what happens within a second or two, the long reach disrupt the play, ends up leading to Connor Garland champs on the backhand the other way, they're relentless there, even though the size is different, it makes maybe when Connor Garland does it, it seems like he's more active because he's a smaller player, but Dakota Joshua has the same mentality. That contract, the initial invite to come to Vancouver, it's turned from show me to pay me, right, he's sitting at 15 goals now, it's been a very impressive season, and we got a lot of texts as soon as that first goal went in, and the second mission, reach and I were talking about it, a lot of people are through thues to give Connor Garland a contract extension, and it's well deserved, Connor Garland or Dakota Joshua, I was going to say only game in the NHL, and it was on TNT, so a lot of eyeballs in this one as well. Yeah, I mean, and again, you know, people are texting in, and I know some people just have a hard time listening, somebody texted in and said, "Sillov's only deserves credit, secondary honors Joshua, connects with terrible against tire teams, sat making pathetic excuses, I'm like what an excuse, say sat, you're still on your meds." I literally said there was a horrible third period, the only good thing they did was killing a penalty in the third, but yes, I mean, I don't think anybody is overly impressed by how they play it today, but what matters is, come away with the win and that's what they did today, let's go outside the Canucks locker room, we're joined by J.T. Miller and J.T., it's all about getting the wins and getting to the playoffs, but how did you feel about the overall game tonight? Yeah, I'm going to try not to be too negative, guys, it wasn't a good game, and there's some parts, I guess, where we find a way to win, but this point of the year, the outcome of that game comes literally relevant when you think about the staples and the standard we try to create, and we just did not play to that today, so not our best, happy with two points, but not a lot we can take there positive. Absolutely, you get the two points and also when your alignments, he's really been a huge story for this team, Dakota Joshua, I'll get two goals, did you know he had that type of between the leg skill there, the way he finished that first goal off? No, I don't think he knew either, that was a heck of a play, that was, you know, it's a high-level play, and you know, I see you guys are on the league doing that more because it's kind of available on the way the penalty kill kills nowadays, and that plays available if you can, you know, have this goal to pull it off, so that was a big goal in the game for us. Nice to see the power play get a couple. Those two guys have played with Lindholm, they've played with Blooger throughout the course of the season, and they've been such a stabilizing force back since November, you're getting this opportunity to play with them, what have you noticed, you know, playing with them that you may have noticed before on the bench watching them? Well, they're just predictable, and these are guys you've dreamed to play with, right? I mean, they're up and down the rink, and then they have enough skill to kill you when you create turnovers. I mean, it's a fun line to play with, and I'm trying to just bring what I bring on a nightly basis to them, and hopefully it complements them, and I thought we actually did some good things today as a line. I kind of got out of rhythm there with the penalties in a second, but you know, I liked our forecheck, and we created some turnovers and had some good looks at the net, so, you know, excited to, you know, build some chemistry, maybe. Well, you guys had a nine-game homestead, and I know you guys joked a little bit, maybe that's too much time to spend that home over 20 days, you guys looking forward to getting out on a three-game road trip? Yeah, I've been at home with three weeks, and two of those weeks, my kids were home from school, so I am ready to get out of here. Of course, you had a new goaltender in, between the pipes, a sixth career game, what do you think of She-Lops today? Hey, he played great. You know, made some timely saves for us, he looked really comfortable. Yeah, I mean, it was awesome, and I feel like no matter who we have back there, it's been great for us, and he was another, you know, especially first time coming in this year, I thought it was great. You still want to try to take some things out of this game? We were talking about the end-of-game penalty kill in that moment, and the group kind of refocusing on a play, a call that maybe could have gone either way. Is that something you take out of this? Is the mentality to kill that one off? Yeah, I think in that, you know, in that time, you know, there's a lot of pressure hitting, and we talk a lot about that, and how you handle that pressure situation, and I let the guys that went out and did a, on the PK, did a heck of a job there to give us a little momentum and score in the, you know, in one of the next couple of shifts, I think, so, yeah, it was a big part of the game for us, for sure. Hey, JT, thanks for your time. Best of luck on the road trip. Thanks. That is Canucks 4. JT Miller, and, you know, if people think we were too critical, he said there was almost nothing outside of maybe that penalty kill in the end. He was not happy with how the team played, and said he doesn't want to be overly negative, but there weren't a lot of positives to take away from their performance today. That is from Canucks leader JT Miller today. Yeah, and the coach has talked about long homesteads, and there you go, JT saying, yep, three weeks at home is a lot, two weeks with the kids from spring break, I love that. It's probably echoing the thoughts of a lot of parents right now dealing with spring break. That's pretty good. Yeah, that's pretty good. It's pretty good. Yeah, he's got some comedy. You still get, you end up getting the two points, right? So even though there might be some not happy players in that room because they know that they can play better, there's still some humor there. Just a dude who wants to travel for work, man. Don't we all? Hey, everyone likes getting out on the road, right? Hey, Randy, great stuff calling the game alongside Brendan Bachelorette. I would look forward to chatting with you again on Tuesday when the Canucks are in Vegas to take on the Golden Knights. All right, boys, take care. Have a good one. Enjoy the rest of your day, and happy Easter to everybody that's observing. Yeah, fantastic stuff. Good well said. Thank you very much. That is Randy Janda calling the game alongside Brendan Bachelorette today a three, two Canucks win over the Anaheim Ducks. Keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar Lumber text unbox 650. You can also grab a phone line, 604-280-0650, you're toll free, 1-888-275-0650. We have a lot of reaction on the text unbox. Lotso says you guys are too hard to please sometimes under 10 games left, have an early clinch to lean on, subbing in their A-H-O backups, obviously resting some guys, giving third line guys more minutes and winning, looking very playoff ready. That is Lotso. I mean, if you listen, I'm sure you'll hear from the head coach, he's not going to be happy. But what he had to say after the game, I don't think they're playing great. They didn't play great overall today. That's not to say that, you know, I am not anywhere near like the six or seven or eight on a concerned scale. I know a lot of people are concerned and they're saying they're doomed in the playoffs and everything. I'm not at that level, but if you're objectively trying to evaluate how to play today, it wasn't great. And this is coming off the heels of a game where they were good five on five against the Dallas Stars, but couldn't come through on the special teams. And the next thing you know, you end up losing that game late. But overall, if you're being objective about how this game was played, I mean, they give up a two goal lead in the third. If in 20% of your games, you're giving up two goal leads, that's not playoff ready. So explain that. So since the All-Star break, this is the 25th game since the All-Star break. They had a 3-1 game lead versus Detroit going into the third, Wahlman wins in overtime. They had a 4-1 and 5-3 lead versus Minnesota into the third. They lose 10-7. We know how crazy that one is. Two-nothing after one versus Pittsburgh. They three-two into the third. They lose four-three. Three-nothing versus Colorado with 21 minutes to go. They lose four-three. This one, two-nothing into the third. They win three-two. That's five games. They've blown multi goal leads. Now, they get one win tonight, obviously, but in the 25 game since then, this is the fifth game. That's just not playoff ready. Yeah. No, I mean, they're not playing the type of hockey you want to see them play right now. That's absolutely true. A lot more reaction on the text in the box, $6.50, $6.50. Tommy into Austin says, "How concerned should we be that we only beat the Ducks three?" Two. To me, the final score doesn't even matter all that much because you can dominate and the other team can be fantastic with their goal tending and taking away some second chance opportunities and somehow, some way, they cling on and you win. To me, the final score line isn't so much the indicator. It's more about in the third period, the Canucks were on their heels a lot. When the game was tied 2-2, maybe the best chance outside of the Canucks getting that 2-1-1 chance on the power play on the PK would at least Patterson trying to find Iliad Mckayev. Which, by the way, Delta Brett is asking, "How can Mckayev possibly decide to slide towards and it sideways?" Yeah. To the continuing straight ahead with this stick on the ice at the end of that 2-1-1. Ridiculous, it shows why it doesn't score much. Well, that's also what Patterson was hoping for that he would have a stick out there. But the best chance I thought in this, when the game was tied before the Canucks scored was for Anaheim. I mean, Anaheim had a 2-1 chance, so the shot went over the net. Carlson. Carlson had a great chance. So it's like, that's the thing to me where you're giving up far more chances than you should have in the third period against a team that, let's be honest, has no business dictating the way they did for the first 10 minutes of the third. Certainly not. And for 40 minutes too, sometimes if Anaheim did anything inspiring for 40 minutes, Carlson had a shot off a rush that she loves, gloved nicely in the first period. There was some rebound opportunities in the second. Calorn has a tip in the second period. The power play had a McTavish opportunity. But by and large, it was in control. And the control was conceded in the third period. And quickly, because there was that tip from Silverberg as well, a deaf touch that goes even through Frano's legs and it goes off the crossbar. So you get your lead off there. You get a bit of a warning shot. You got to switch back on. And, look, Del Wager's goal is a bit weird. There's not much to it. It's just a short side corner shot on the zone entry. But the warning signs were developing early in that period, and they didn't switch on. And before you know it, it's 2-2 on a play where multiple players lose track and nobody tries to jump on that near-post opportunity there for Gustav Lindstrom. And he's still able to squeeze a pass through. There's multiple players flying to one side. JT leaves his guy on the back post and the goal's created. It's like four Canucks in front of the net in one Anaheim duck and somehow he's left completely unchecked. And it's a bit of a funny, you know, the way Puck kind of comes free there. If you've got four guys in front of the net, somebody's got to take a body. That's really poor. Somebody got to take a body. Somebody's got to take a stick. Somebody's got to take a puck. Or whatever it is. And nobody needs any of those three. Four Canucks like lined up together in one Anaheim duck and he's the one that gets the goal. And that type of coverage just can't happen. A lot of reaction on the text in the box. We'll get to more of your thoughts coming up in a bit. But let's go to the foam board. 604-280-0650 or toll free, 1-888-275-0650. Let's go to Poco where we have Holden on the line. And thanks for calling in. What are your thoughts here today? Hey guys, that has to be one of the two ugliest points we've ever gotten this season, I think. And totally agree, like what is happening on that second goal? Five guys, puck watching right in front of the net. How does that happen? This close to the playoffs, like it's a bit discouraging. If we come with that on Tuesday against Vegas, we'll get killed. And I hope that's a wake up call because this, how do you come out of the third period looking like that? I'm at a loss. We've got to rest some of these guys. You've got to just sit them down, talk to them, say, hey, what do you care more about a game on Tuesday, game 75 of the regular season, or getting your name on a silver trophy for the rest of time? And yeah, so it's just frustrating. But I've got two points, I guess. I'll hang up and listen now. Thanks, guys. Thanks for the phone call. That is Holden and POCO calling in. And it's one of those frustrating games, and I think overall in the text inbox, there's a lot of frustration that's being-- Just aspiration. What do you want to call it? No, not everybody. Somebody texted in and said, not worried. That was a duck Stanley Cup in terms of the duck's effort after they were blown out by the Edmonton Oilers yesterday. So now everybody kind of feels like it's anything to panic about, but Holden obviously not overly happy. Let's take one more phone call before we hit the break, 604-280-0650 or toll free, 1-888-275-0650. Let's go to Bella, Bella, where our friend Don is on the line. Don, thanks for calling in. What are your thoughts here today? Oh, hi. Thanks for taking my call. Fell to swallow up on the last caller. I just can't believe these coaches can't figure out this power play, because the skill is out there on the power play. They're not shooting from the point with a crowd in front of the net, like when they're off into the corner, the player can just shoot in the legs in front of the net, like nothing else is working, try something. And because if they don't figure this out in the playoffs, one goal can mean winner lose in the playoffs, and we can't score a power play goal, we could be in trouble. Thanks. Hey, thanks for the phone call. That is Don and Bella Bella calling in. And look, it's weird, because they score two power play goals today. Well, they had four power play opportunities in the score, too. But yet, here I am. I agree with most of what Don is saying. I agree with what he's saying. I thought their best power play was their first power play, and they had the JT Miller shot right off the bat. Hughes had another shot. And had a shot, but then Hughes had the last, and then Suter, I liked when he came in and attacked the space, had a bit of a net from scramble, they scored exactly. That's their best power play, I thought. And then the court of Joshua scored late in the other power play in the second period to give them the two nothing lead. But I do agree overall, there's still not generating more, but do you take some solace in the fact that you had a couple of goals in the power play today? Somewhat. Again, I think there's three things from today's power plays that will stand out to me, and two of them are on the players. One is Elias Patterson refusing to shoot that play that we talked about. There was about a minute eight left in that second power play. He gets past where he has an opportunity to cut to the middle of the ice and get a shot off, chooses not to, and they have to try to set up. And the other one was Brock Besser, actually, in the second period, passes out of a bumper shot on a transfer of one timer. Yeah. And JT gives it to him, doesn't even attempt the pass, gets another one later. Now this one guys had collapsed on, so I understand why he passed it out of that one. But those are two big moments for me that stand out. Obviously Joshua gets his goal, that's a highlight, and Besser scores the other one. So there were positives, but those two things are going to stand out for me, and I understand Don's frustrations, and a lot of people's frustrations on the specialty teams tonight. The other one, we've mentioned two here said, and this one's a positive, because this is all still new for Rick Talkett as well, right? It's not as if there's a lot of playoff experience, you got to look for edges and situational moments where you can help your team. So 14 seconds left before that Besser goal, the opening goal, on the power play, you get a face off, it's a lot of line with Hugh's Haronic, right? So there's the, the, the lot of max, right? So find just a moment to create an edge, and I thought that was a good deployment by Rick Talkett. You swap out Garland, you go to 2D man, obviously, it sets up well, if you even lose the face off, you're stabilized and ready to play that way, that to me is a good moment to find an opportunity to give your guys a little bit of an edge, so big plus for Rick Talkett in that moment. Good stuff there, this text here from Brandon and Vancouver, feels like a post game after a loss. No, it's a win. Connects did win this hockey game, and this person says, it's great that we scored two power play goals today, but Anaheim's PK is second worst in the league. But hey, you got the goals, you got the victory, couple on the power play, but obviously a lot they can do better. Again to Harone, back to shooter, right wing, side of the goal, Joshua, between his likes he scores. Oh my word, Dakota Joshua reaches into his bag of tricks, and pulls out his 14th goal of the season, and it was a beauty. Canucks go up to nothing with another power play goal. And there's some razzle-dazzle from Dak, right in front of the net, turns towards the middle of the ice and goes between the legs to score that goal. No, I don't think he knew either, that was a heck of a play, that was, you know, it's a high level play, and you know, I see you guys are on the league doing that more because it's kind of available on the way the penalty kill kills nowadays, and that play is available if you can, you know, have this goal to pull it off, so that was a big goal in the game for us. Nice to see the power play get a couple. That is JT Miller talking about an incredible goal scored by Dakota Joshua, you heard the call coming in, and put a sit between his legs on the power play, gave the Canucks a 2-0 lead at the time, and he also scored the game winning goal a bit later on in the third period to give the Canucks a 3-2 win after the Ducks tied the game in the third period. We've been critiquing this win quite a bit, Jeff and Langley text in, it says it doesn't matter whether you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning, take a W and get ready for the Vegas goal tonight, so Dominic Ferretto, I mean Jeff and Langley texting in. Look, there's elements of that mentality that bear out if you're in the playoffs. You might be able to do that and say hey, it bounces into the next game, we got a win, 25% of our job is done to go get four wins. But right now, you don't live in that reality, you're trying to build towards the mentality of we are hitting our peak at the most pivotal time of the year. This is not of we're playing at a peak game. No, this three game, and we'll dig into this a bit more, right, but this three game road trip coming up now, especially the Tuesday game in Vegas, then the Saturday game against the LA Kings, can you play some playoff hockey in those games and start gearing up because you come back home for a few and, you know, the season is going to be over in like two weeks now, like where we're getting very close to the postseason at this stage. So it's one of those things where, yes, I wanted to see them play a lot better, of course, not overly impressed by how they perform today and overall, I'd say the past few games here at home ice, but there's still enough time here that if you put together some good performances, you can feel a lot better about the team heading into the postseason. But also the people saying on the text inbox, 65650 into the Dunbar lumber text message inbox, Chris from Calgary, barely beat the ducks should have blown them out. I'm sure talk it isn't a press Dakota best player. He's a beast. They'll need him in the playoffs. Jimmy in Vancouver team's got no killer in stink can't put teams away. They're lucky that they want today. Not impressed. Sorry to say, but they're going to be out in four or five in the playoffs. Quick side bar. Why is it that when the connect struggle people are like, they're going to get swept in the first round. Like how do you go from like a loss in game 73 or it's not just tonight. This is game 74, but like lost game 71 to like swept in the first round. I just I just wonder how you come to that conclusion. Do you see it decades of reinforcement? Yeah, I don't know. I just, it's funny. It's one of those things like, yeah, a little concerned about the playoffs, like, no, we're getting swept. It's like, forget it. Might miss the playoffs. Like, no, they're they're clinched. It's not about, oh, they're going to miss the playoffs. It's about they're going to get swept in the first round. It's like, I don't know. Might need to pump the brakes a little bit on that. This one, guys, just please say this team isn't good enough and this one signed Dakota Joshua at all cost that. All right. Dakota Joshua at all costs. I know was a column from Caribou texted and he said, I give him four million a year over over five years. I don't think that's going to be his market. Like, yes, I get it. You know, signed him at all costs, but that is what calling the Caribou said, dude is not a bottom six four. The man before his price guy rockets. I got news for you, Colin. The price is already skyrocketed. It has, but it's not going to be, you know, five years and four million per season. I don't think he has a good playoffs, man. Oh, if a good play. It could be weird. It could be weird. Yeah. I don't know. And we're talking about this in the second animation. We think over 20 million in total money. That's a lot of money, man. Like, if you look at the last year's free agent class, like four guys got over 20 million. Yeah, 20 seems. It's a lot of money. Yeah. But that'd be like pure involved money where you're locking up seven years kind of thing. Yeah. It had at least more of a track record. Sure. Well, he'd mean no, not sure. Yes, he does. But still, you can say you like the one player. I don't know. We don't have to do the contract talk stuff, but if we're concerned about the code of Joshua getting 20 million total money, I'm not quite sure it's there. But yes, I think his market is going to be such that it's not going to be cheap to bring him back. I do agree with that. I would say like he's playing like half a point a game level. Yeah. That's pretty awesome. And if he has a good playoffs, you know, the number I could see, I think it's on the high end. But if we get to that stage and someone gave him close to $13 million, sure. No, I can see that. I would be surprised. I'm not going to see that. Four years, three years, four years. Yeah. More than three to four. Sure. I can see that. It's three to four years. It would be a surprise. But now we saw the Tommy Know. But now it's different. He's a center, but also late bloomers on a three year deal at just over 11 million in total money. It's kind of ballpark. That's kind of where I would say maybe in that range. But we'll see. Joshua went from being a career journeyman, a guy who signed a two year contract worth 1.7 million total money to cashing in and taking care of himself and his family for the rest of his life. So what a tremendous performance tonight, but also a great season, two seasons from Dakota Joshua. Absolutely. So what else is happening? Go on. Also in the inbox. This one, Darren and Vancouver, a lot of thoughts on Dakota Joshua coming in, standing in front of the mat scoring clutch goals, runs me a young, hungry, Todd Bertuzzi proud of them. That one's coming in and Ryan and Burnaby connected, made the playoffs. How do you weigh resting versus pushing to be in playoff form? Well, I think you rest guys that need the day, the day, right? I mean, so for all the talk about the Canucks resting players, Lindholm is actually injured. He's day to day. So he took the game out. The only guy they arrested today was Nikita Zodorov. Like everybody else was available. They didn't rest anybody else today. The question I think is, I think what's important is the Canucks finished first in the division. Until you finished first in the division, I don't think you can really take your foot off the gas as a team. You have the luxury because you have seven capable of defense and without no Julesens played that you can rest. One of Zodorov, Julesen and Ian Cole from time to time, and that's what they've done in Zodorov today, load managed and didn't play the game. I think you can afford to do those things, but until you clinch or get close to clinching first in the division, you can't really start sitting guys like Patterson and JT and so on from for games. I think that's something that I started weighing if and when you clinched the division. Yeah, I think they've done a decent enough job as far as maintenance days and who's playing today. That's fine. As far as the idea of pacing yourself in a game as you get ready for the playoffs, that to me is a non-negotiable for me. I do want to see improved performances as we train towards game one. Yeah, no. Absolutely. All right. Keep your thoughts coming into our text inbox. 5650, we'll hit more of those as a show goes on here. But before we do that, let's get the thoughts of the Canucks head coach. Here is Rick Talkett after a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Rick, we just spoke to some of the guys in the room and a lot of them were pretty critical of the performance in spite of the fact that it was a win. What do you take away from this one and what did you think? Yeah, it's a win. Take the win and just go from there. That's all you can. I'm glad they said that because I think we all feel the same. Dakota, since he's been back, obviously, chipping in offensively today. What does it say to sort of the player he's become here that he's able to contribute like that for you right away after missing so much time? Yeah. I mean, how hard he's worked these six weeks, you know, and not missing a beat. You know, there's a couple of russies moments he told me that he even said, I mean, it's talk, I got to do some more stuff, but I don't know what he ever did. That goal was pretty special. It was beautiful, that first goal. And even the second one, that's a big goal for us, especially in that point of the game. Everybody not really feeling satisfied with the win here. Like, what were you looking for more from your group tonight? I was just executioned a little bit more push from some of you guys. I think a lot of turnovers, and we can't, you can't turn pocket over, you know, I don't care who you are. Like, we, we're, I don't know if it's a respect factor, I mean, we were warned them, you know, they're going to work hard, you know, so when you don't, when you throw a lot of turnovers, that means you don't respect it, hold it, you got to be careful of that. Carson CCC plays 22 plus minutes tonight, I know some of that's probably kind of from the power play, but were you guys trying to just test out a few more minutes for him tonight? No, I didn't even notice that, you know, he's sometimes the defending moments, but moments, you know, for he has a feel of put some guys out there, I agree with him. JT Miller won 16 of 21 face-offs tonight, it's something we don't ask you a lot about, but how important is that for you as a coach seeing a guy like JT be able to win at 76%? Yeah, that's one good thing about our team is we have good face-off guys, you know, Lindy, when he gets back, Mills, he's good, he's pretty good, you know, Teddy, we got some good face-off guys, which it's big, it's, you know, it's possession, you know, and if you can, if you can be 55, 60%, it's a good advantage. Rick, you get two goals in the power play, JT afterwards wasn't overly thrilled with how the power play looked, what was your takeaway? Well, I thought, well, get the two goals big, we won the special teams, you got to go that way, but it's just execution, you know, some bad passing, you know, critical moments to hold a puck and then we throw it away, like these are, you know, he's got to keep working on the execution, you know, everybody's looking for plays, but you got to execute before you even do plays. First couple of minutes there, when you give the two goals in the third, you've had those moments like that where you've given one up and then all of a sudden, you know, more pressure coming right after, how do you prevent that after the first one goes in, is there a way? Well, I mean, the next line, urgency, you know, if things are sliding, you know, don't, don't pour, you know, I keep saying, don't pour gasoline on the fire, like if the teams are making a push, don't turn the puck over, you know, get it in deep or manage the puck, give us a 30-second shift, get the other line out in a good situation, don't extend and then turn the puck over. So I think, you know, getting the two points is big, but also it's, you know, I hate seeing them to learn in the last one, but you got to be careful of those things, especially the turnover system. They're just, you can't turn the puck over, you just can't, we can, our team can't. I know that. How much confidence do you have in Dakota right now the way he's playing? Yeah, I mean, the last two games, he's just given us what we need. We need to, we need some more guys to kind of watch him around the net and his determination. You know, you talk about going to the net, I mean, how much of that is just inherent right in terms of... Well, there's a will factor, the willing, you know, you know, you're going to have ice bags after a game. If you want to score a goal, you got to have ice bags. If you don't have ice bags on, not saying you have to have ice bags every game, but it's hard to play that style, but you're going to get rewarded. And especially in April, that's when you get rewarded. Your thoughts on archers and how he played as you. Yeah, I thought he was good. Like, yeah, I know it's just talking to Clark. He said he didn't like one of the goals. I can't. I'm not sure which goal it was, but the screen, that was screen. Yeah. Yeah. But anyways, he was good. I thought he was really in command, which is a good thing. It's a positive for our organization. You know, he played for me good last year, too. I thought there was about three or four games that he played really well. He's got some points. So JT now has Teddy Blugger's wingers. When you're forming a line or putting together a line, how much do you think it helps that Garland and Joshua have played so much together? Well, I think that's the key. You know, I think having the guards and daft together, I mean, they've been really good together. So putting Nilsie on there, we're just looking for a little more offense, which we did tonight, you know? I know some of the things you've tried, obviously, you're experimenting, trying to get guys going or whatever. But do you think that trio might have staying power or do you leave those three guys together? Well, you're always looking for different situations, but obviously it was a positive thing, you know, the code of getting two goals, you've got to look at it, you know, and then we'll hopefully get some guys back, we can start tinkering with some other stuff. But it's definitely a possibility, you know, it could be a good line for us, for sure. Power play was maybe not perfect in how it executed gets the two goals. But when you look at something like Besser's goal, is that like the perfect illustration for your team of what you want from them, a puck to the net and a body to the net? Well, it's kind of a broken play, you know, it's kind of a shot and you've got to get those broken plays. We haven't had many of those and maybe that ignites us, gets guys excited. You know, I want guys to get excited out there when they have the puck. You know, I don't want them to just hold the puck and just pass around the perimeter. When you get it and you have an advantage, if a PK got runs out of position, that's the exciting time. You know, the toons were talking to the group the other day, like that's when they were more excited on broken plays. Set plays are, they're good, but they're one us. But the broken plays are the best because now you, you know, it's, you know, it's a shot. It's a pickup. It's right back, a shot. It's, that's the fun part. I think we got to have that mindset. That goal maybe will ignite some guys and obviously Dak's goal was a 10 seconds left in the power play. That's a big one for it too. Like you get in that goal, scoring at the end of a power play is big. You talked about Miller having two new wingers. He's played with Besser pretty much all season. Now you've got Besser with Patterson. What do you like about that combination or what are you looking for for that combination? Yeah, I just think that, you know, you sometimes you need a little freshness. I think Milsey and Besser get a little stale. You know, they, I think getting away from each other for a few games is good. I think they enjoyed it. I think I thought Bess was skating pretty well tonight and, you know, I thought that line was better than the third. I didn't like their first two periods of the Patterson line, but I thought in the third period, they got, they got going a little bit, which, which was good. But yeah, but that's, that's the reason you do it. Rick, I know you touched on this earlier today, but some of us are delinquents who weren't here. Who's that? Sorry. Yeah. Can you talk a little bit about what it means to this group to make playoffs and officially quench? Yeah, no, it's big. You know, we, you know, coming in the situation, you know, every, you know, we're supposed to be involved, whatever the people were saying, and it was good that the players didn't hear the outside noise, and they just believed in themselves, you know, get a hundred points. We got a long way to go, and we know we have to play better, and we can't sit on, you know, hey, we're a playoff team, and we're a hundred point team. You know, you can enjoy it for a moment, but we really got to work on our game. So, but I, I congratulated the players today. I thought they did a hell of a job this year to get us to the situation. But now it's go time. You know, we got to, we need some guys to find their game. We have to, our team's got to find our game. So that's the next thing. But you still have to commend the players. I mean, I think they've done a hell of a job so far of getting us to the situation. You've talked so much about being a moment-to-moment kind of guy this season. Does that change at all at this point? Do you take a bigger look, or is it still that one bite at a time? Yeah, we don't look like, you know, we're not sitting there, hey, who are we going to play and all that stuff. We don't think that way, you know, honestly, look at this game. How do we get better from this game than we're going to do at the Vegas? You know, maybe it's good that we're going on the road. I think it, I think in an in-game home stand, probably not the most ideal. I saw a lot of staleness, and sometimes the coach, you think, hey, could you do something different? You know, can we practice different or give my different, like, I don't know. But I thought it was a little stale these last couple games where we, and I think this road trip, well, maybe it'll help us, you know, have that road mentality to play. How do you think your team played in front of sea loss? Not necessarily just right in front of the net clearing out space so that you could see. Yeah, I mean, like I said, I think our structures always held us in. It's the individual stuff in front sometimes where we have to get better. But not too bad, you know, obviously that second goal we didn't like. I mean, that was something that shouldn't ever happen. But for the most part, I thought we defended half decent in front of a sea loss. And he made some good saves for us when we needed him. That is, Canucks head coach Rick Talkett after a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, says maybe the one goal, sea lobs would have wanted back outside of that, liked his performance. And you know, kind of mentioned how over the home stand, things got a little bit stale, they're excited to get back on the road, didn't quite love what happened. But you know, glad they got the point, but he said that's kind of been the entire sentiment by the guys after the game, that hey, they won, but that wasn't good enough overall. Yeah, it's much of what we heard from JT when he joined us earlier on in the show. And so look, it's done. You try to build upon it and say Vegas is going to be an important one and get ready for Tuesday. And hopefully there's an inspired performance back on the road and guys can bond together again and bind together to get ready for this pretty pivotal game. Yeah, it's a big game coming up on Tuesday and, you know, aching is remaining on the season now. And, you know, the Canucks had their big nine game home stand. They finished five, three and one, hey, winning record and everything. But didn't get enough wins against good teams. I think it's what, how people kind of feel about this home stand. You know, the best team they beat was the Winnipeg Jets in the first game on that Saturday night. Since then, you know, they lost to Vegas, they lost to L.A., and no, sorry, they lost to L.A., they lost to Colorado, you know, the Washington Capitals as well, the Dallas Stars. So there were some, you know, playoff teams that they struggled against, but they have a lot more playoff opponents coming up, especially two of the next three. You have Edmonton still, you have Winnipeg still, you have Vegas again, though, there are a lot of tough games remaining before the season is over. This home stand just feels like trying your favorite dish at a new restaurant. And you like it, but you know, another place makes it better. It's like, yeah, I'm kind of unsatisfied, but it's still my favorite dish. It's fine. Five, three and one were right. It just kind of just feels like that. Yeah, I know. It just, yeah, they make it okay, but hey, chef over there, that's how it's best or homemade is where it's best. You know, I know exactly what you mean, and that's kind of the overall sense. And he got into it on the power play again, and no trucker James and others texted in and said, hey, I know they scored two out of four, but hey, Anaheim's PK is not great. Overall, not creating enough chances. And he keeps going back, talk it does, talking about the broken plays. And if you can take advantage of those situations, that's far better than consistently trying to set up a one look, the set plays, which are one and done very much. And especially when you don't get the set play, you see that happen, though, they're going for it. And they just kind of hold on to it and not holding on to it aggressively, like holding on to it on the outside. And you saw that first power play, it was very simple big, but got shots on, they crashed the net, and things opened up from that. Like the goal they scored, the first goal they scored came off of a rebound opportunity. Yeah. So I always have a interesting relationship with this idea because trying to create broken plays feels weird. But I think all that is a shoot in the puck, this is something that even Boudreaux would talk about. I think talking does a far better job of illuminating what he means by it, whereas one thing that Boudreaux would say was shoot the puck and off the shots, you can maybe showcase your skill, saying that's when guys get pulled out of position a little bit, make a pass, that's when you can let your skill kind of develop. And I think it simply comes down to that, taking the shots that are there, not forcing bad ones, create second opportunities, and that's where you start creating a little bit of chaos. Yeah. Yeah. I guess it's just interesting to play for technically, I guess, a weirder play because these guys are skilled, they score goals. No, I get it. But I think what he's trying to say, because like they're so, they're so mechanic, he says, I think he's a good word that he used himself in trying to set up certain plays, whereas why don't you just take what's given to you half the time? And you, again, on the first power play, the best thing I saw from them was Pugh Souter when he was on the half wall, nobody went up to him. So you just drove towards the net and then he shot the puck to go to Joshua, almost banged in the rebound, a scrub and suit afterwards. It's moments like that. It's not about taking bad shots from the outside when you're being guided away. They don't do that. No, but it's about if you, when you have a lane, attack the lane, don't look for the set play. If they give you something, take whatever they give you and that's something they have to do a lot more of. The best one, it's a shot tip basically, and rebound opportunity is the one he converts on. For instance, on the power play, I texted you, because I was sitting on the other side today watching the game from press row, you're here at the Jim Robson broadcast, where we're sitting now doing the post game show from. But I texted you and I said, "Why is Besser passing off shooting opportunities in the bumper spot?" They're two in a row. JT set them up. And instead of shooting it right away, he passes it back to JT. The second one I understood, because at least guys collapsed on them. The first one made no sense. Yeah, but even the second one is to just shoot it, you know, like... You probably could have shot it. You could have, you know, and it's just waiting to hold on, like waiting to make the pass instead of just shooting the puck and being aggressive, like you're, you got 38 goals on the season. You're a good shooter. You're in the bumper spot. You scored earlier on the power play. It's right there for you. Shoot the puck. Why aren't you shooting that act? Like, why are you bypassing an open slot chance? And those are the types of things you just can't be doing, I don't think. Certainly. Six fifty, six fifty into the Dunbar Lumber text message inbox. This one, honestly fellas, do you think the Canucks win around against any of the seven other Western conference teams? Yes. Yes, they can win the first round. Like, there's a lot like Brad and Kam Bloopes too, agree on the first round exit, Angry Rick too, he's texting in about, you know, Pedersen's confidence, I get that, but... They can, like, stick it within the first round. Are they going to win the Stanley Cup, like, who knows? I don't know. I mean, we'll find out. Like, what's going to happen here? Who knows? Who knows? Who knows? Well, you don't know. Like, I don't know what's going to happen. Well, Nashville's lost to in a row. LA's lost to in a row. I just obtained a play like that. Hey, you know what helps you against LA? Having five guys on the ice when you're not down a man. I don't know. Maybe not going, you know, maybe having five guys on, you know, and you lose by a goal. Hello. You played when the game sounded like her men was there. Hello. All I'm saying is I get it as frustrating, but like, I just, to me, I just have a hard time going from, like, Game 73, 74, a couple of losses to, like, they're losing in the first round. They can't be national. They can't be LA. What are we going to do? It's like, relax. Take it easy. It's all right. Like, it's, and the playoffs change so much, and it's not like this team is so far away from its staples. Today, again, I don't love their performance today. But against the Dallas Stars versus five on five, like a battling five on five, they're playing good game. Like, since the all-star break, the Canucks, when it comes to their differentials, have the best high danger scoring chance, the second best high danger scoring chance, the differential in the league. They're creating more than they were earlier this season. They're giving up less now than they were earlier this season. There have been some bad performances, sure. But there's nothing other overall game that screams red flags. Are you more concerned about the whole game, or just the third period? Third. Okay. Had it just been 2-nothing? Yeah. And it was like, all right, you didn't really throttle up, but you got 2-nothing? I probably would have been fine. There was a lot of, I mean, the first 40 minutes was tons of special teams' times, right? The Canucks didn't really give up much of anything for most of the game up until the third. You know, so I get it, and bad finishes some bad performances. But to me, like if you go over the totality of their past, what, 25 games now, it's not that concerning. And when I dig into it, I'll re-watch all the games. And yeah, I see things I don't like, and there's certain things they have to do better. But this whole notion that the team is like falling apart and playing horrible hockey, and it's all been smoke and mirrors at this point is flat. It's a flat-out falsity. It's a falsehood. Absolutely. It's not true. But yes, it had to be better today. It's still one of the hockey game. Things they have to improve on. And, you know, I think the big elephant that we haven't really talked enough about, we have mentioned a few times, is Elias Patterson. And we'll talk more about him on the other side. Garland recovers into the 4-cent right corner, back to the line for Myers, but a heavy drive kicked out by Ghostall and Miller gets it right corner. It's a Garland behind the net, centering pass, Joshua Scorses! Connor Garland behind the net finds Dakota Joshua all alone to the top of the crease. And Joshua scores his second to the afternoon to re-establish the Vancouver lead. It's 3-2 with 2-13, left in the third. It's a attack attack in Vancouver as Dakota Joshua gets a second of the game right in front of the net, left all alone by Anaheim, but a behind the back feed by Connor Garland. You're always looking for different situations, but obviously it was a positive, you know, Dakota getting two goals. You've got to look at it, you know, and then hopefully get some guys back, we can start tinker with some other stuff, but it's definitely a possibility, you know, it could be a good line for us for sure. The Canucks head coach Rick Talkett after a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, talking about Dakota Joshua, but Connor Garland and JT Miller, two goals from Dakota Joshua, as you heard ran deep say, "DACK ATTACK" at the game winning gold Canucks win, and this is the Canucks central post game show presented by the number five orange on Sportsnet 650 and the Sports net radio networks, Satyar Shah with Biknazar. Keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar Lumber text inbox, 650-650. You are going to get some Canucks player audio as well post game plus Ian McIntyre is going to join us in a final segment of this show, but a lot of people texting into, and we'll get to some of these, a lot of people texting into about Elias Patterson and talking about where his game's at, and I mean, do you have certain texts you want to read or just kind of lump them all together about the Elias Patterson concerns? Yeah, I'll just lump them all in together, I'll read the one, it's a lot of things into this segment. Uninspired and it's concerning PD in no way taking matters into his own hands as superstars and quotations are supposed to do at crunch time and he has it for a very long time, there's just a lot of those styles of texts. Yeah, there's a lot of that, and it's the one we talked about at the moment in the power play, it's the second power play of the game, but minute, minute eight left in the power play, and he gets a pass on his own entry, they just entered, I think Garland's the one that passes to him, he holds up on the wall, and Patterson makes a nice movie, he darts into the space between the two ducks forwards, and he's coming downhill, and he gets the pass for Caesar Cleanly, has an opportunity to turn, and on his forehand, get a pretty good shot off, but defers to the corner and sets the whole power play up, that's the one where it looks like you have an opportunity to create your star player, create more. Yeah, and I see a lot of people texting into saying, Patterson's not a target type of player, you know, he needs to be on a different team, that's more skill-based, I don't buy into any of that, because we saw him last year with target, he produced a lot, Patterson was on pace for 110 points about midway through the season, playing the same system they're playing right now, so I don't think there's anything to do with that, but the one thing though, I think Patterson is doing, he's bypassing opportunities, he's not playing as instinctively as he normally does, you mentioned on the power play, he'll over handle the puck or he'll like, you know, hold Bob a little or make a mistake, but how often do you see him get the puck, and instead of making a forward action, it's like, you know, go east west a little bit and try to over handle it almost, and I know the coach mentions hold on to the puck, but it's more about making plays holding on to the puck, not just being on the outside, and there are times when Patterson has opportunities to kind of take charge of a chance, and he just doesn't do it, and to me that shows a player, whether it's a physical limitation, whether it's confidence, there's something there that's not allowing him to play the way he normally plays, and that's on him to figure out, and I don't have as many big concerns of team-wise as a lot of people do, I think once the postseason comes on, the type of intensity ratches it up anyways, and the connection can play through staples, so I'm not as worried about that, the form at least Patterson is going to be in come playoff time, however, is something that we're tracking, he doesn't look like he's himself, and they have eight more games after today to kind of figure it out, and that to me is something that has to get sorted ahead of the postseason. Not the only concern for a lot of people, many people are also talking about this, my biggest concern with the playoffs is figuring out the line combos, many, many texts about this, Jordan from Saskatoon has sent it in, a lot of people have texted in with the line combos tonight, that it's not quite refined just yet, a lot of changes, and they're not building chemistry before the playoffs. And that's, I don't think that's, that's an unfair suggestion, but one thing I would say about it is, I think you feel pretty good about Besser and Miller playing together if they have to play together, I think you feel pretty good about Garland with Joshua and Blueger, whoever Garland and Joshua play with, so if you already have that kind of set, how much are you playing with really, is it just figuring out Patterson and his line mates? Because I'm not as concerned about that, you know what I mean? I think, well one thing, a lot of people are praising Miller, Garland, Joshua tonight, and I think it's fair, they had the most hiding interest chances created, guess which line also had the most hiding change, hiding interest chances against, was it them? That line too, so is that a thing that we see carry over, you know, well the goal that got scored against was JT Miller on JT. JT traditionally can be high event, but as much as we're praising that line, you know, when you get to the playoffs, your weaknesses also get preyed upon, so that line looks fantastic, but they're also, you know, a pivotal goal, it's against, and they have three high dangers against them this evening, so. Well that McTavish goal, I mean you can make the case because McTavish and JT were skating together down into the Canucks end, and yeah, one of their fencements should be on that side, but you can make the case, that's your guy, JT and JT loses track of them, right? Absolutely. So you're right, that line had some good moments of course, but defensively too. But if Miller and Besser is the pair, we're not breaking up Joshua and Garland, so they'll have to go back with Lindholm or Blueger, whatever it is. Which would be fine, with that, certainly. So I do think the line juggling, I think you have in your back pocket, putting Besser and Miller together, and that's fine, you feel good about Garland with whoever there is, it's really about figuring out who can play with Patterson. And is it an issue where can you get him going with Lionmates, or does it simply come down to him? Because the one constant is him now, they've changed Lionmates, it changed different things, and the same performance keeps happening, or the lack of performance keeps happening. But it is, the idea pitched to you a long time ago, and now that we actually see it in this moment of putting Joshua and Garland higher up the lineup, I thought if you're going to get someone going, go get Elias Patterson going. Would Garland and Joshua with Patterson? Yeah, I mean they did Garland and Hoaglander. Well, I'd rather Joshua. Those two guys, those two wingers are working with anyone, seemingly. It's working with Blueger, it's working with Lindholm, it's working with Miller now. We've seen Garland with Anderson. But I think what that also does, and I mean, as long as you're playing those guys, we were top six, I think it takes away from your bottom six, or it takes away from your third line, it takes away from... Oh, absolutely. And it does, but of course, it's like if you want to have a recipe for success in the playoffs, you kind of need Patterson to be able to carry guys. And hey, you do what you've got to do, but that's to me where you have to try to recreate somehow, some way. Because I do agree, his struggles, he's not right. He clearly isn't right right now. And I know the coaches isn't going to be criticizing him too much in the media and stuff like that, especially with how the reaction would be and how it becomes a massive story. Even him last time, just mentioning that Patterson wasn't great, turned out to be a story. So he's very hesitant with that. But I can probably, I can assure you pretty confidently that they want to see a lot more from him too right now. Certainly. What's the first step though? Is it just getting confidence back? Is it production? Because production's been there. He's had stretches where even you and I would say, okay, 17 points and 17 games, the conversations are a little overblown right now for Elias Patterson here recently. It's, you know, it's still decent. He's got five points in six games. It's not terrible, but as far as hitting your peak and driving play, for me, if it's come down to confidence and I know he had to maintenance day, but right now everyone's kind of dealing with something. It's game 75. You're getting to that stage in the season. Yeah. For me, it might just be a one game remedy. Now you're probably not going to do it against Vegas, but is Arizona opportunity to put Patterson with Joshua and Garland. And do you do Miller with Besser back together? So you get that duo together again. And for me, it'd be McKay of Miller Besser. And that's probably harsh for Hoaglander, but right now it's, it's, you got to figure some things out. Or maybe it is Hoaglander with Miller and Besser. And it's McKay of with Blueger and Souter or whatever it is, but is your best solution right now, putting Patterson with Joshua and Garland. Yeah. I mean, I get it. And maybe that's what you need to do. But somehow, some way, I think you need to get him to be at the level that he, that he can be in the postseason. That's the one thing that I really think they have to figure out here before the playoffs start. A lot of reaction on text unbox 65650. This one here says certified fan therapist connects fancy to enjoy the moment a little bit more. That's Ian texting in. And Jason and Cochran says, all right, I'll take you guys in advice, deep breath and relax. That's where you guys are good therapy for my long tortured Canucks fan soul. Well, we try for the most part, but I'm just not at a point now where I think, you know, panic should be setting in. I mean, they're sitting at 100 points. They're eight games to go on the season. They still control their destiny. Just finish first in the Pacific Division. That's it. I think that's all you got to take care of. And I think they're more incapable of doing that and hopefully to do get us to that stage. Now, we'll get back to more of your reaction coming up in a couple of minutes. But let's hear from Canucks players' post game Dakota Joshua, huge performance score two goals including the game winner. And here he is meeting with media talking about the game today. Yeah, it wasn't a great performance by a group, but you can never, you know, I guess you can be upset after when if there was a case that was probably it. But it was nice to still persevere and get the two points. For you personally, after being out for so long to come back in and contribute offensively right away. Yeah, that was big. It was, you know, nice to get on the score sheet again. And maybe not my overall best game, but yeah, nice to see the puck going. You and Connor have played a lot together this year, not necessarily with JT, you know, what did you think of the chemistry with the three? Yeah, when we could get it in the offensive zone, there was definitely, you know, good reads off of each other. And then obviously, great play by Connor there to make that pass. And third, the play on your first goal. Is that just something that you try here? Oh, I don't know if I tried a whole lot, but back in the day, I used to be on the power play. So I know, you know, some things to do out there, and I was just lucky enough to have that one going. How come it sticks? Are you at that net front spot on the power play? You know, it's a different speed at this level, but yeah, I feel comfortable and confident in my game to be able to make plays down there for sure. Pretty as go goal you've ever scored? And the NHL, yeah, for sure. Such an instinctual goal. I mean, you talk about the confidence level that you're playing out just to try to execute that. Yeah, for sure, it's confidence. And, you know, this year has been really big for my confidence. So to get to this point and, you know, at least try it, yeah, it does speak to the confidence level right now and just trying to keep building off of it. But the importance, I mean, you know, nobody seems to be overly happy with the win talking to the guys that came here before you. I mean, how much more difficult would it have been to walk in here after that two goal lead giving up the points? Yeah, for sure, for sure. That was, you know, we needed that one. We needed that one. And, you know, we almost let that slip away, and we could all feel it, obviously. Still, you know, I don't, like you said, not very happy about it, but better than coming in here without two points. To get up to speed this quickly, since you've been back, we're at like skating boot camp. Are you a little surprised that you're going to have to speed so quickly here? No, Yogi, he does a great job. It was definitely skating boot camp. So that's a great way to put it. No pucks for a long time. So yeah, the feet were moving. Because it feels good to have confidence here in your hands coming off in the injury. Yeah, yeah, for sure. It's, you know, it's a long time out, but each game I expected to get better and better and, you know, be 100% going into the playoffs. I was going to pledge to playoff spot last night to play. So our first chance to talk to you. I mean, I know that it's not the end goal, but it can't get on the playoff run unless you get to the playoffs. So what does it mean to you to know that you get to play some playoff hockey? Yeah, very exciting. For the team, you know, for the city, the organization, you know, we can feel and tell how important it is, you know, not only, you know, player to player, but, you know, for everybody involved. That's, there was a goal of ours as we started off. And yeah, like you said, just to get into the dance, you know, is the first step. And then you go from there. So nice to get that behind us and, you know, build towards it. Can you take personal satisfaction back as you're challenged even way back in training camp to get going, get your game under here in Europe today. Yeah, for sure, a challenge. I wanted to come in here and prove that I could be better than last year. So yeah, Rocky star, but, you know, I got to put your head down and go to work and just trying to keep this this year going. How about the importance today of getting the win for archers as he goes in there after not having played in a few weeks and having played up here in a while? Yeah, he had a great game. That was very nice to see, you know, you know, we feel bad that we let him off the hook there in the third and let him get that the the first one. And then obviously they tied it up, but he played amazing tonight. And, you know, we're going to need him to step up again. That is Dakota Joshua fresh off two goals today, today, not tonight. And also talk about Arthur Shilov's being strong between the pipes. And, you know, as far as Arthur Shilov's is concerned, you know, the coach did mention earlier that there was the one, the one goal, maybe the quirky didn't love. But outside of that, like, I don't even know if there's there's a lot to criticize from Arthur Shilov's tonight today. I thought he was fantastic. No, I thought it was really strong. You never know how the nerve is going to be season debut and everything like that. The glove save was a really confident one on Carlson and look a little bit unlucky on the Zullweger goal. Maybe he could be tighter to that post, but McTavish, there's nothing he's going to do on that goal. And even in moments of scrambles. And, you know, one thing we talked about in the second intermission or first intermission, I thought he did a good job deflecting pucks to the corners. And it's not that Casey, this myth doesn't make saves, but he will, you know, Casey makes a lot of saves. So he talks about rebounds. Yeah. And so he's quick to cover some up, but there are a lot of net front scrambles. Well, he does rely on the Canucks defense and boxing guys out and clearing a lot of those. Whereas with she lost tonight, it just felt like a lot got pushed to the corners and then just natural defensive sequence kind of take over and winning a puck in the boards rather than winning a puck in front of the net. It was something that just felt a little bit different. Now, Thatcher Demko is so good at pushing things away or just sucking them into the crest or holding on to the puck, whatever it is. And you just see that little level of sharpness that goes from Demko all the way down to the other guys. And it's not that they can't do a job and they certainly have provided results, but that to me stood out that there wasn't as funny net front scrambles tonight from the Ducks. It's just the one on the power play and then obviously a backdoor tap in, but that's not a crazy scramble off a rebound. I thought it was a really good performance from Sheila's. Yeah, I thought so too. And you feel pretty confident about if you have to turn to him at some point that he can get the job done. And he's getting at least one more start. He's playing against the Arizona Coyotes. Now, talk had mentioned it lies Lindholm will be going on the three-game road trip. So for those wondering his status, is he done for the season? He's not done for the season. If he's going on the trip, I would say he might play against Arizona or maybe more likely against LA Kings then, if he goes on the trip. The second one on the back to back? Yeah, so I don't think he's playing guy coming off an injury day to day. I don't think you're throwing him out there Tuesday, Wednesday. I think you started him. You're playing either on the second of the back to back or just wait for him to play the LA game. So that would kind of be my guess. If he goes on the trip, it means he's likely to play. Otherwise, you know, guys wouldn't be going on the trip. But Demko's not making the trip, which tells you she loves is getting at least one more start. But once the trip is over big, there are five games remaining out of those final five. How many is Demko starting? You would hope at least two at least because the end of season one, he's probably not going to get. Yeah, I mean, especially if they're playing on the 20th one, depending on the overall situation, that might be a game, especially where you'd love to have she loves back up the Smith in Winnipeg, and you kind of keep a couple guys at home. Now, depending on obviously the cap, that's going to determine whether they can actually afford doing that or if they can even, you know, send, or they can even recall she loves. So there are some logistics going to it, but, you know, seasons coming to an end very, very quickly. And we'll break down what is remaining and we'll hear from more Canucks players. The captain, Quinn Hughes, has some comments we want to get to you. Plus Ian McIntyre is going to join us. Keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar Lumber text and inbox 650, 650. This is where Utah Canucks, you're listening to the Canucks Central Post game show on the official home of the Canucks. Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network. Rick Tockett's spoken a lot about how well he performed at the World Championships for Latvian. Here's a great save by She-Lavs on a chance for the Ducks and across the Vancouver line. Long range wrist shot off the left wing by Leo Carlson and Arthur She-Lavs uses that chance to flash the leather and make a glove hand stop. You mentioned the World Championships. He was a national hero in Latvia as his name was being serenaded in the streets of Riga. Arthur She-Lavs backstopping the Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Made 20 saves today looking fantastic between the pipes for your Vancouver Canucks and this is the Canucks Central Post game show presented by the number five orange on Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network sat to your Shaw with Bick Nizar and I just turned to you before and said She-Lavs continue playing like this and he has his first start as a Canucks this season. He had appearances last year where he was fantastic and I know the World Championship World Championships and everything. This is his sixth start in the NHL and he has a 2-6-2 goal against average at 9.08% and it's only six games of course that doesn't tell you everything but hey you might feel pretty confident just having him be your backup next season and it's saving a lot of money on the goaltending position and not having to you know spade to keep the Smith maybe go on and get a veteran backup. If you feel confident in Arthur She-Lavs having a guide to be your backup next year making under a million potentially I don't know that might be very hard to resist. It would also just fit the timing of the development plan though too. That would be the thing here you go into your age 24 season all right now it's time to see what we actually have and you'll get a run of 20 somewhat games in that spot. So he's playing he's going to have played almost 90 games in the AHL by the time this year is over and he goes and plays a few games in the playoffs most likely. So the fact that he's impressed in his six games or done enough to me feels like the audition can increase. Now that's next season. Yes what it means for the rest of this season I still think for me this is clearly ahead of him on the depth chart but next season if I'm building this out I don't even really have goaltending on the list of priorities for the offseason. It's to me it's Demkonas and She-Lavs. That's kind of what that's the way I've been viewing it as well and it's just more reinforcement after a strong game from him here today but you're right that's a conversation for the offseason but just figure that bring that up here really quickly. Before we get to more of your text messages we were gonna get to the thoughts of the Canucks captain Quinn Hughes today. Now I know it wasn't a banner night by by a lot of Canucks players it wasn't the best performance overall. I thought Hughes was moving fairly well did pick up an assist today and here is Quinn Hughes meeting with media post game after a 3-2 win. Yeah it was a massive win obviously needed the two points. I don't think anyone's too happy about what transpired. Again you always asked me this one I mean it happened five minutes ago I'm gonna have to look at it tomorrow I'm sure we'll practice in video and you know we'll see what we can do better. It seemed like it was a tough call five minutes to go I look at a tie game and you guys killed it well and then might have played your best of the game after that I mean the resilience you to get through that and play better. Yeah I mean our penalty kill the last two three months has been really big and you know one of the best within those last three months like I said and you know they usually do a great job and had a lot of confidence that they were going to do that. Yeah it's good I mean obviously Dak made a really good play and Brock you know by the night and that's where he scores all his goals and I think they're still room for improvement but you know we'll take what we get. We know we've all seen this year really how much Dak leads to this group. Yeah happy guys having back. Yeah there's not a lot of players like him and you know it's a great pass by Garley on that second one but I mean he's in the position and he knows and he reads the defense where to go and then obviously the first one speaks for itself how nice of a goal that was and you know with his size and the way he can make plays and he pound and kills and he's got you know really good hockey sense too I find when we're proxying against him and you know we need him and we don't have another kind of group like that so it's nice. We haven't had a chance to talk to you since you guys got the exercise you know she's poised to play a spot. I know the job's not done but given where you were the last couple years and projections and what does that mean to you. Yeah I mean I think I downplayed it just because how good of a year it's been and we've you know expected to be there you know lost a month or two whatever it's been and you know I got a couple of text messages last night saying congrats and whatnot and you know it is it does mean a lot especially like you said there with our last couple years of been and you know I don't think we played good tonight so we can't you know we got to ramp it up a bit here but it is nice that we're going to be there. Quinn the last time the city hosted a playoff game you weren't even drafted. Have you thought about what it means to the city to be have you guys back? No honestly I haven't thought about that. I haven't really been on social media much this year and so I don't really see the fan engagement or whatever but obviously the crowd's been great you know this whole season and for me I'm just focused on finishing strong and as a group what we can do to you know going to pass we're playing our best hockey so that starts in Vegas wherever we are next and it's going to be a massive trip for us and then the time comes we'll enjoy you know hopefully you know a cool fan experience and player experience and pass. You've got nine games at home and a lot of breaks between games it seems like a good thing at the time might some time on the road be a better thing right now. Yeah I'm excited to get on the road to be honest and it's going to be a big road trip for us especially with how the last couple games have gone I mean this is a really good test for us and we'll be ready. That is Canucks captain Quinn Hughes after the game and echoing the sentiments of J.T. Miller who joined us big right after the game and said yes they won but not a lot they can take away from this game they didn't like that they did not play to their staples they had coach said the same thing and as you would expect so did Quinn Hughes and he kind of puts pretty big bullseye on Tuesday's matchup in Vegas against the Golden Knights you know the Canucks have two more games against Vegas they have one against LA they have one against Edmonton and one game coming up against the Winnipeg Jets so if you're looking at it I mean you know five of the Canucks final eight games of the season big are against teams that are firmly entrenched in the playoff spots and very high in the standings for that matter so it's not going to be easy if you want you know if you want to kind of make the excuses of it's you know late in the season now a lot to play for you know nine game homestands some of these games against opponents like Anaheim which you know aren't very good teams if you can't get that intensity going over these final eight games here especially with five of those matchups against the teams I just mentioned then I may be inclined to agree there's a bit of an issue here but a lot in these eight games yeah it's going to be big and that starts on Tuesday in Vegas like Quinn said at the very least you would hope we learn a lot in these eight games four and four something like that again we'll see what the performances look like through this stretch there is a lot of concern as well coming in our inbox here 650 650 about the style of performance obviously against this team but on the back of them playing Edmonton and here's Edmonton chasing down Vancouver right it's getting kind of tight it's getting kind of tight so I think one thing that that's important we've mentioned this before too not just that Edmonton's as closed the gap obviously but the thing that's important is the regulation wins so it's not even just Edmonton catching up to Vancouver and maybe passing them in points but them passing Vancouver and regulation wins is going to be very difficult they're five back they have 10 games left yes they have to be plus five in regulation wins versus Vancouver here in these this last little stretch that to me is going to be difficult so for all intents and purposes they are three points up yeah it's it's significant for Edmonton has the best Vancouver they can't tie them correct that plays a role in this yeah so for people that still want to be presented in Division 1 it's not good enough for Edmonton to just tie Vancouver unless something really goes wrong but in that stage if the connects really fail and are picking up OT wins they're still picking up OT wins yeah exactly and I think for Edmonton so Edmonton has 10 games remaining like you mentioned and the thing with them is they still have I believe it's three back to backs remaining on the season that sounds right yeah three back to backs the connects have one that comes up on Tuesday Wednesday so it's not an easy schedule and they still have the likes of Colorado twice to have Dallas still death they have to face they have to play Vegas still too St. Louis hasn't been easy that's their next opponent coming up tomorrow on the road so it's not going to be an easy road necessarily for Edmonton either but it's about Vancouver taking care of business and this is where you know as good as the Canucks had been and you know you're gonna lose some games sometimes against opponents you should be beating and that's something that happened obviously on this homestead maybe against the Washington capitals but you kind of have to win now a couple of these tough games like there is no margin of hey just take care of business against non-play off teams you do that you're going three and five you know you kind of have to pull out you know some some big games here big wins against some pretty good opponents cleaning up the inbox 650 650 oh we were joking earlier that this homestead 531 on the positive side of the ledger what did you call it I said it's it's like having your favorite dish at a new restaurant okay that doesn't make it as good as your favorite restaurant or as you do at home or right as someone makes for you uh are you guys crazy this homestead felt like eating at your in-laws you eat while you put up a fake smile joke that's good that's good i like that uh this one uh can we trade EP 40 with sat lord of chess texting in 650 650 uh i mean i'm not sure that's gonna happen i'm not sure if there's anyone that can carry sat salary you know you think emat you think uh elia's peterson's salary's inflated just wait until you find out uh yeah i mean elia's peterson's no trade clause doesn't kick in for another year and a bit but for all intents and purposes he is not going to get traded um i like i'm not sure the time reading that text a lot better no it couldn't be any better because as soon as as soon as you read that text een mac tai walked in and he's like we're talking trades already now mac they're talking about trading me as well with elia's peterson try to make the salaries work i mean that's why i was involved in it but before you answer the question i have to give you your intro here's the here's a man we call the triple threat you watch him on tv you read him on digital and you're about to hear him on radio he is een mac attire now the baseball season is back upon us i'm envisioning myself riding in from the dugout yeah on a golf cart with a giant baseball cap on top of it uh like a little big hat to keep the sun off yeah i'm wearing sunglasses chew and gum but missing hockey it's because there's nothing like spring hockey no there is an out pitch is something in the dirt i loved i loved baseball in the mac entire household as you might imagine uh a family of scottish immigrants soccer was the first sport but i loved baseball and it broke my heart when guys learned to throw a curve when i was about 14 years old and i could no longer hit anything oh man yeah i had a you know my favorite player was ondry dawson which is why i like the triple threat all right right as a kid kind of a for people who remember the original vladimir garero dawson vladie garero both fantastic expos yeah who who could do it all but i played the outfield had a good arm range good good no i did i had good range uh good arm but once the stick went that was that was that yeah it's uh hitting the off-speed pitches is usually the most challenging part of baseball and i mean and not to mention the guys that can throw like 90 plus miles an hour that's the other part of it as well but yeah yeah well it was amazing how many teenagers felt like they were throwing in the 80s when i was when i was standing up there but i wasn't kidding about the spring hockey though and and it is um you know the connects didn't clench the way they wanted to clench they didn't win the way they wanted to win today but a hundred points is is still an achievement with eight games to go and i don't think i don't think any of us were projecting a hundred points for them over 82 games let alone 74 so so that's great i think they've got their their feet firmly on the ground so i think this homestand uh was a reminder to them how much work they have to do certainly it reinforced what rick talkett and his staff have been have been preaching but the trade deadline has passed yeah so why you guys are entertaining oh we're not the idea of trading really funny things because people want to meet oh that one's really funny well they want to meet really yeah i'm trying to get rid of me too so that's what it was yeah well so you would be the throw in to make the pattersons throw in the pattersons the throw in he would be the uh contractual make way make all right so to get sat you have to take on 90 i think two and a half 92.8 million yeah to get pattersons and then and then and then you can get sat well i'd say you're worth it yeah i'd say almost a hundred schmill uh give or take i'm not sure pattersons gonna be worth it but we got a long time to find out we do now you know we've somebody does well yeah well i mean we've been going back and forth on people in our text inboxes there's been you know people watching their last little bid and saying well i'm concerned about the playoffs the way they're trending they're gonna lose in the first round i don't quite subscribe to those fears necessarily but i do think pattersons game is becoming a growing concern because we keep waiting for him to kind of get out of this and it seems like we were still waiting and we're left wanting with each passing performance well first of all i don't think it's an unwarranted concern about the playoffs but i think you could say that about any team because this is going to be the wildest most even Stanley Cup tournament we've ever seen at least when it begins maybe somebody is going to you know get through round one and then just become dominant and mow through uh opponents but this is an incredible field and based on what we just saw the last nine games well i don't know why anyone would think that the Canucks are going to cruise through the first round no matter who they play whether it's Vegas or Nashville or LA or whoever so it is going to be a challenge and especially if it was starting now that wouldn't be so good but they have eight games to get a couple guys back figure out you know what's going on with peterson and others but pd hasn't been hasn't been very uh impressive and i think you know the Canucks since february 15th they are now nine eight and two and so they they paid and i'll give them the benefit of the doubt that a lot of that has to do with how how horrible that schedule was in february there was there was a spillover effect in in march but um peterson in in those 19 games if i'm not mistaken i think he is 12 points uh jt has 23 um and i'm not saying necessarily playing one off against another i'm just saying for reference that's how that's how peterson is done and in fact the reason jt miller is playing with teddy bluger's wingers is because they're still trying to get peterson going so they had them with they had them with garland for a bit and hoe glander who's done a good job of driving that line a lot of nights the guy um you know who's making a million dollars and now they're trying brock besser with them to try get that going in and i know talk it said after the game part of it is you know miller and besser who have been so good together started to look stale so just separate them give them some freshness but this is more about let's try what can we try next to get to get peterson going so you know that's one of their concerns but they've got they've got others and and certainly uh you know i was going to say one player is not going to make a difference but often one player does at playoff time you know one game one play makes a difference at playoff time in a seven game or it can make a difference in the seven game series but they've got they've got other issues and and i tend to think until improving wrong that peterson is such an elite talent and such a fierce competitor and carries a healthy chip on his shoulder which i thought might come off after his first couple of years in the NHL but it hasn't and that's fine you know this is this is kind of what has powered him and fueled him uh to this point and i think if people are doubting how he's going to do it in the playoffs i think that's probably very good for the Canucks because i think peterson will use that and uh we'll see how he does but he's one of the guys that certainly in these final eight games you want to see a little better from so you mentioned putting besser with peterson and very prominent goal score he's having his his success but we were discussing this earlier the two wingers that feel like work together no matter the situation or josh one garland is that an option also to get peterson going yeah i to tell you the truth i hadn't thought of miller between garland and joshua until i saw it tonight on on the depth chart and in some ways it makes a lot of sense like both joshua well let me back up we know talk it loves pears we tend to think of the pears as being a center and a winger the pair from that line is clearly joshua and garland together and i i spoke to garland after game he said talk it was the same way in arizona everything was pears so in arizona garland played he said most of his time with schmaltz and he said they had great chemistry he said his first two years here which of course was under three coaches uh garland said he you know everyone kind of just played with everyone and nobody really had chemistry and he thinks a lot a lot of their success this year is due to the fact that there's been these pears so that's the pair uh joshua and garland now if you think about them spending most of the year with teddy blugger and being on that terrific third line and it was one of the best third lines in the n_h_l_ a lot of nights it was the connects best line even though it was third on the depth chart we talked a lot about okay can you keep that line together because those guys are your best candidates to move up and they've needed people to move up like hoglander is playing where he is because he got promoted because they had a need there there was an opening there was a chance for hoglander to take that spot and he has and that's that's great for nils uh we've seen suitor for a long time in the top six and he he's not a top six winger he's an experienced pro who can do a lot of different things very smart player so it doesn't hurt you but he's not a top six winger in a lot of respects putting both uh garland and joshua into your top six makes sense but then who are you going to play them with now there's only there's only two choices right it's either it's either miller or peterson and i'd have been inclined to to keep besser and miller together and maybe we're going to see them back together soon but besser has played with peterson peterson more than miller seems to need guys at this moment to help him and drive play and so if you just put miller between those wingers then you probably have a pretty good line because they were a good line with blugger stands to reason they'll be an even better line with with jt miller and garland and miller have a lot of camaraderie even though they haven't played together that the two loudest voices in the room uh after the game when i was asking garland about the switch and playing with miller he said miller's a top five player in the world in his mind and i said something like are you gonna tell miller that he said no he'll be pissed off that i didn't say top three but you know miller is uh you know a massive talent with his skill set and and you know maybe that line will work maybe it maybe it has legs yeah i mean it's going to be fascinating to kind of see how it all kind of comes together forward line wise but it's interesting the free agents the ufas who have been here who were signed this offseason have all kind of taken turns showing their importance maybe being the most important player blugger had his run cole had a really good run case of the smits had a good run sam lafferty at the beginning of the year the first two months exactly incredible to quote a joshro maybe maybe in the most consistent start to finish outside of the injury got 15 goals goals now on the season 28 points of 55 games is he becoming the most important free agent to keep out of the ufas well i think i don't think he's becoming i think he is and i think he has been for a while and if nothing else his absence due to injury kind of validated that because we saw how much trouble the connects had replacing him the team you know it's interesting there's some things going on in the background like you know under the under the surface here that people don't see and there there has been some contact with some of the ufas representatives to to start this process and and i believe that decoded joshro is at the top of that list and he's at at the top of this because of what we've been talking about but he's also at the top list because he's 27 years old and he's he's making a million dollars so there's well it's under a million eight fifty yeah eight fifty so you know you can really reward him and maybe still have a number that looks pretty good whether it's you know some people are thinking you know sub three i'd be surprised if it's sub three but even if you get him at three million even if you go longer term because that's probably something he wants given his trajectory to this point it's still not a number that that causes problems for you in the salary cap so so his age is a big thing but it's tough for a team in this position where you're trying to get them to focus entirely on playoffs and there's nine ufas there's not three of them and they all they all want to stay now you put zadora and lindholm in a separate category right because they're big ticket guys and they were acquired as rentals for now that's the status but all these other guys that we were talking about like laughter and then once you didn't mention sat the defense man like he and cola wants to be back tyler meyers really wants to be back you know what that means as far as what he'd be willing to accept i have no idea but i do know that he doesn't want to go anywhere else to play those guys are well into their thirties and that's why it's it's a different situation you're not trying to get the last one or two good years out of to kota josh or you're maybe trying to get his best years yeah still ahead but it's tough when you're this close to the playoffs if you start dealing with those guys a it can become a distraction for them we just saw pd and and granted that's an extreme example because the money involved but we just saw how it affected his play you don't want to do things that are going to disrupt anybody's focus or or make anybody think about anything other than other than doing their best the next practice the next game but the other thing you do when you have this many ufas so let's say you do sign decoded josh or we'll don't some of the other guys say well what about me yeah you know and and there are other guys who are really worthy i i would think at the top of this and again age having a lot to do with it i think teddy blueger they'd like to have back i think sam lafferty they'd like to back it at at a low number if they if they can do it and these are guys even kacie to smith um who it's hard to see how he fits based on what his market value might be like even if he's a two million dollar guy which is what he is now with point nine can you afford that would you rather pay two million or have she loves beer back next year that's the question you know and she loves is a big factor in this as well but she loves if only had you know two seasons parts of two seasons remember thotcher demco had three before him cori snider had three or demco i guess had two and a half it was his third year he got brought up so it's not not a terrible thing to let she loves um you know develop a little more before you put him under this kind of pressure so at the end of this very long winded answer which you guys are accustomed to it's it's it's tough when you get this close to playoffs on a team that has real aspirations to start kind of yeah picking away at at ufas i think probably uh guys you're going to have to wait until whatever their playoff run is uh but it wouldn't it also wouldn't shock me if you know one or two uh actually got done before the end of the season well that would be great uh well give us something else to talk about and we'll see what happens with a big rf a filiparone so a lot of things to figure out but most importantly where the Canucks finish in the standings and a huge game coming up on tuesday in vegas against the goldenites are you going to be in vegas i'm going to be in vegas so we'll chat with you from vegas and what who goes to vegas doesn't say in vegas no i'm not going to arizona and then i'm going to la well it's not a bad three game trip no it's nice and often those are packed into four days and the first two are back to back but then there's two games two days before the la game uh i think they're important games uh i don't i mean yeah they're important to the standings and the Canucks obviously they've come this far um i'm trying to do the math in my head now i think it's 93 days they've been in first place yeah it was 70 days at the trade deadline yeah so is that 93 now 23 days since the trade debt yeah 22 i think that's about right um you'd like them to finish it off and and and finish there but to me it where you finish again because of how competitive this is going to be is secondary to how are you playing when it begins because there's we know there's going to be no easy draw like finishing first in theory yeah you get a wildcard team instead of the third place team in the pacific but right now that could be either vegas or la there's just no there is no easy matchup so to me these games this week on this trip it's more about okay you didn't show too well at key times against all these power teams that you lost to and you look at who they lost to on this you know former Stanley Cup champs still led by Stanley Cup winners um can they do better against vegas like at at if they're tied in the third period can they not be the team to flinch and take a bad penalty or make a bad play and lose a game can they when they go to la can they match la's discipline and patience and no matter how much it crushes their soul just play the way you need to play to beat that team and be patient and not force a play that feeds causes a turnover and lets them score though to me that's the important thing about this trip is how do they how do they fair could do they look like they belong as a playoff team do they look like they can be calm when a game is on on the line that's what i'm looking for in those games especially yeah the vegas game is going to be tough vegas has picked up points in six straight games five of those being victories so they're turning it on right at the right time and Ian will look forward to chatting with you after the game on Tuesday and lie look forward to reading your latest on sportsnet.ca in a
