The show where Kool-Aid runs blue, faces turn red, and rose-colored glasses never go out of style. This is the Detroit Lions podcast. So the lights traded for Zyderia Smith, and it wasn't that they needed an edge. It's that they needed this edge. Zyderia Smith is the right guy coming to the right team for the right reasons. If that makes sense. I like this roof. Have I made that clear? This is good. Please keep watching until at least the first ad break and hit skip when that pops up. If you're gonna go through why I like this. Exhibit A, Zyderia Smith hates the Green Bay Packers. He was drafted in 2015 by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round. He had to fight guys like Terrell Suggs and Magyudon for play time. So it took him a little while to get on the field, but when he did, he was a force, hurt himself a nice big contract in Green Bay. And in the first two years in Green Bay, he recorded 26 sacks, 107 tackles, and then he got hurt in the first game of the 2021 season. So with one year left on his deal, he and the Packers began talking about an extension, which is to say that the Packers were talking to him about taking less money. You see, he had a cap hit in 2022, coming up of $27.7 million because the Packers did something stupid with their contracts. And they decided rather than pay a 30 year old coming off of a back injury, they'd cut him in free up cap space. So a week later, he signed in Minnesota. And here's what he had to say about why. I gave that my all. I put my blood, sweat. I put my everything back on the line. I put everything. And that year three, I was treated bad. That's why I'm here now, so I could play them twice a year. So FTP, check exhibit B. So there is Smith hates the Vikings. Coming off surgery, Smith put up a 10 sack season for the Vikings to start his new deal. So everyone's happy, new team, kick and butt, all agreed things together, right? Well, no, not even close. Smith had the vast majority of sack production in the first half of that season. And then he got kind of banged up, but he played through his injuries, but he didn't play extremely well while playing through those injuries. At bad GMs tend to really overreact to that kind of thing. Like rather than, you know, say draft good guy and making your older guy play a little bit less so he doesn't get banged up as badly so he can get more production out of him, have him ready for the playoffs. Maybe make a run. Bad GMs, cut guys, who had just learned his during his third Pro Bowl nod in four years and got a few votes for comeback player of the year. Rumi Gino Smith won it that year. He obviously should have won it. But getting a few votes in that process means that you came back for some adversity, you did really well. I'm more impressed by that than I am by the Pro Bowls. (laughs) 'Cause that's largely a product of what team do you play for and are you okay? So the Vikings traded him at a sixth round pick at a seventh round pick for two fifth round picks. And for those of you who have looked at the math on this, you know that the actual value of a fifth round pick and a seventh round pick in terms of what you get eventually from those picks is about the same thing. They traded him to the Cleveland Browns. So I mean, the guy must be a locker room cancer, right? That brings me to exhibit C. Zeneri Smith is actually a glue guy. Rashant Gary said Smith basically played a big brother role for a mid-degree bane. He's hugely responsible for him returning into the player that he's become. Here's a quote from Juan Thornhill in Cleveland who's been in the league long enough to know what someone who's a locker room cancer looks like. He means a lot. Everyone's gonna feel it if he's leaving here. It's gonna hurt. He's one of the leaders on our defense, but like, I wish nothing with the best for him. It's gonna be tough. It's gonna be tough losing a guy like that. That's for the post game interview Sunday after the Browns dropped two and seven with a loss to the Chargers. Oh, and another thing in this regard is the other team that was looking to sign him that we're sprinting to give him a contract where after Green Bay caught him. What was the Baltimore Ravens, the team that drafted him? They wanted him back. They were really interested in bringing him back and had a deal, basically agreed to when the Vikings came in last minute and said, "Hey, we'll give you an extra $12 million." So scathing reviews from teammates and coaches, right? No, not even remotely, not at all. So why is he available? Well, the Browns are staring up from the bottom of a pit that they dumped themselves where they moved on from Baker Bayfield, 21 touchdowns, nine interceptions, 71.1% completions with a 104 pass rating in 2024 to Deshawn Watson, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 53.3% completions, 51.1 pass rating in 2024. Guess which one of those guys has the 37 million larger cap hit in 2025 too? The family that vacations together stays together. At least that was the plan, except now the dastardly desk clerk is saying he can't confirm your connecting rooms. Oh, wait, what? That's right, ma'am, you have rooms 201 and 709. No, we cannot be five floors away from our kids. The doors of double locks, they'll be fine. When you want your connecting rooms confirmed before you arrive, it matters where you stay. Welcome to Hilton. I see your connecting rooms are already confirmed. Hilton, for this day. I've got a lot of grandbabies, like a lot, a lot. And when it comes to finding a gift for each other, you know, it could add up. But this year, while I was making my way through Walmart, I realized I don't have to spend a lot to get the gifts they'll love. And OPI mini-mani sets. I'm gonna do so much nail arts. Oh, yeah, a Lego set. My own a wall of water bottle. Ooh, and that's just half of them. Shop great gifts they're sure to love for $25 and under. At Walmart. Future U faces some big expectations, work out more. Go to bed earlier. And most importantly, make smart money decisions. Thankfully, today U has Bank of America. One place with tools and guidance to help balance tasks from budgeting to saving. So you can just be U with big plans. Do more with a bank that asks, what would you like the power to do? Explore our tips and more BankofAmerica.com/FutureU. - Brown's gonna brown, man. Anyway, that's cause a cascade of wind now moves because like the browns are stretched super thin in terms of cap. And when you make wind now moves and you get to two and seven, you got a lot of cap, you gotta move. That's where they're at. If the browns didn't find a trade partner, they were gonna cut him next off season anyway, regardless of performance, prior to him getting a roster bonus. It's not a giant roster bonus, but they definitely were not gonna pay that. This is a salary dump. That's the only reason he's gone. I say that because Smith has five sacks in nine games this season. Until Sunday, when Miles Garrett picked up three, Smith had been leading the browns in that category. So Smith has played great ball, hates two of our division rivals. He's the guy in the locker room who picks up leadership roles. And then the lies just don't have that in the D line right now, as much as they did with their top, was three or four edges that are all out. Kind of for the foreseeable future here. The other nice thing is that Smith is still under contract for a perfectly reasonable cap hit next year. If this year works out, I suspect the lives are gonna give 'em a little bit of an extension because like there is a void year on the end of this deal that kind of makes some cap stuff look a little weird. They'll probably fix that up. And like as far as the player goes, he's a similar guy to Murakistan Vinport, but without the massive chronic injury issues. I would have been calling him the best available free agent option to come in across from Aiden Hutchinson in any year that he was available, because schematically he's the power ed with enough juice to threaten the edge that everyone wants across from their stud pass rusher. It's not just a fit for this year, but next year too. And like this move also makes it that if the lights do take a pass rusher with pick 32, the kid doesn't have to come in and be a starter immediately on a team that's trying to win now. Smith has said goodbye to teammates. It's posted a farewell to the organization on social media. It's wearing suspiciously lions-like colors in that post also. I haven't seen the trade terms at the point where I'm recording this, but I don't really care what they are, unless they're absolutely ridiculous. The Detroit Lions players, the 53-man roster right now, have earned this addition to the team. For two games without Hutch, that secondary has played its butt off to cover for the lack of pass rush that was there. Eventually, somebody's gonna figure that out. Brad Holmes, whenever he got them the best guy that was legitimately available, because this is a year that the Lions have a shot at winning it all. Okay. Bravo, sir. Bravo. Let's bring it in here together. Lions on three! One, two, three! You've had enough of that shit.
