(upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Good evening, everybody. And welcome to the talk and cop. We're here for another glorious full-time match reaction. It is finished at a Rokus Anfield, Liverpool 4, Fire 04. That somebody in the telegram put that up to Fire 04, which is just absolutely lovely. Leverkusen put up a big goose egg. Liverpool go back to the top of both of the leagues that they're in joined by the regular crew tonight of Ashley, Chris, and Kev. Ashley, this is getting to be kind of fun, isn't it? - It's almost like this team is actually really good, and that we have a really, really good coach. But don't tell anyone, 'cause we haven't played anyone yet. So we're just going to kind of quietly slide under the radar. - We'll play it. - Oh, yeah, I'll play it. - No, we're going to get to the end of the season having played 60-some games, everybody twice in the league and we'll still not have played anybody yet. I mean, Kev, the only negative I can find from today's performance is that it might just be that the radar is picking Liverpool off loud and clear now. - Yeah, that's a statement, wait. Everyone will have put their ears up. If they hadn't already, they know when that, they know when that, this team is for real. Aaron Aslot is the real deal, and patience is a virtue and it was proved again tonight. You can lose a game in the first 15 minutes, 100% you can. But tonight, it was literally all about getting the job done and feel kicked into gear and we reacted and we reacted in such a positive way that it was, it was outstanding. There was a second half that really, you got the benefits in the second half from the groundwork that was done in the first half, if you get me, it felt like one of those first half performances that grind it, grind it, grind it. Your flowers will come and that's what happened. And it's not the first time we've seen this type of performance, but I think tonight was as clinical as I've seen us this season. And it wasn't the case of, yeah, we got four goals. It was the chances that we got in front of goal, we finished, we were ruthless with it and we didn't stop. It was relentless right up until the 92nd and 93rd minute. So, so many good things to come out of. Players we've bouncing into the fill again next Saturday night. - I know, it's, it makes me hark back to the preview show we did coming off of the last international break of looking at this block of seven games. And with the exception of the most perfectly optimistic of Liverpool fans, this run so far has gone as good as it possibly could. Chris, let's just run through the lineups quick. And then I think we'll zip through the first half as quick as we possibly can because there's a lot to get into in the second half, but a couple of changes for Liverpool. Great to see Kanate right back in though. - Yeah, it did look with workers and, you know, it looked like a bad one, like a dislocation or a break in his wrist. So luckily, it was all good, he was excellent today. Oh, please, Jones started, 'cause I think he deserved his start. He probably should have started the last game anyway. So I think then, like I said, it's just been a fun fight now between Sobber's Lie and McAllister. And then probably, I think we were sort of a chat, I suppose it is rotation. I was a little surprised, noon, I since start, 'cause I thought actually he's played well this couple of games, but I think it was just rotation and I assume that the plan was for that front three to be a bit more fluid to try and pull the back three apart a bit more. You know, so give that a little bit more fluidity, but yeah, absolutely fine. My mate kept his place at left back and rightly so. Yeah, you see, Costas Simicast can't have a good game without you getting just absolute pelters in the chat. I don't. Listen, there's nothing better than a play you, so you don't rate and the brilliant sound. I can look with that. I'm happy with that. I'm not one of these fans who have to be proven wrong, have to be proven right and, you know, won't give players credit when they play well. He's been really good this season. Every game he's played so far, he's been really good. Can't, can't fault him. So, you know, yeah. That's really all you can ask for out of anybody that comes on and talks about Liverpool is that, you know, you're, you're willing and able to put your hand up and go like, ooh, had that one wrong. So like, for instance, Manuel Agarte, I am so happy we went nowhere close to that guy because he is, he is, he is not what we need. Let's just put it that way. Ashley, Bear Leverkus and our serious, serious proposition. And they come out, I mean, it's a strong lineup. It's very defensively minded. Three center halves, the two wingbacks and Frampong and Grumaldo. Two sitting midfielders in there. I mean, Granite Jacko, we know all about. And then attacking firepower up front. I mean, Florian Burtz, the world knows about Florian Burtz now, don't they? So to get that, to get that result in that performance that we had, especially second half against the team with Alabern the pedigree of Nebula and the Bear Leverkus and it stands us in good stead. - Absolutely. And I mean, I think the first half just felt like both teams feeling each other out. Like, we messaged each other a couple of times, just saying it felt very evenly matched the first half. You know, it was just sort of like a little jab here, a little jab there, but neither team really taking the game by the scruff of the neck. And I think that that's kind of becoming slots signature thing where, you know, the first half of games really is, let's feel them out tactically. And then second half, let's really go at them with exactly the right tactics for that team. And I'm obviously oversimplifying it. But it was just, it was very enjoyable to watch. I think there were a lot of people that were a little nervous the first half, but I actually felt like we were in very good control there. - Yeah, I saw it kind of the same way. I mean, it's cagey was kind of the word knife's edge, finally poised all the cliches that you want to throw out about at halftime. But, Kev, one of the things that I really like from the first half was the work that Ibu Kanate was doing up against Victor Boniface. He's a unit of a center forward. And quite mobile too, like he's not just that stationary, kind of Chris Wood type big man up front. He's willing to drift left and right. And I thought Ibu Kanate was rather tasked with the job of making sure that he wasn't doing too much damage. - Yeah, but Boniface is a top notch striker, really came to prominence because in last season, you saw how much he likes drifting out onto the wing. If the ball is over with Frimpong, he's always looking to make that run across either for the ball in the air or across the face. And Ibu Kanate tonight was an absolute beast. He was, we'll talk about him at the end, no doubt, but yeah, he was ridiculously good and he had to be. And if he wasn't the only one, right across the back line, we were outstanding. The only time that we really got caught was when Frimpong got all in the back of the net, but the handball flagged up pretty quickly. But that was the threat that they carried, that one mistake and there can be at you. And with the pace that they have, and the likes of Florian Verdes as well, Florian Verdes is absolute quality. He was picking pockets in between Macalester and Van Dyke trying to orchestrate stuff, clipped little balls in here and there. But in the main, we absolutely managed it really, really well. Grew into the game, grew into the half. You know, it was almost like the case first 10, 15 minutes. I thought we started okay. I thought we started pretty decently at going forward. But in both sides, it was the feeling of the process. But yeah, they carried threats even from the wings. I mean, Frimpong is good, but I thought Gromaldo was better. Gromaldo looked a really dangerous operator. Really comfortable, is that in fairness, Alonso has almost developed that system to get the most out of the squad that he has. And they're really comfortable in it. That's what makes this performance by us so much more impressive. You know, this is not a joke of his side. This is a side that I've lost three games in two years, you know, in two seasons. And, you know, this is the second loss they've picked up this season so far. They were coming in tonight for half two wins in a draw in the Champions League and one loss in the Bundesliga. So to do what we did tonight is no small feat. It's a real, real solid win. You know, it's one of those wins that I think it backs up our performances so far in this block of games that, you know, we've kicked on, you know, it wasn't a case, you know, when the fixtures came out, we were all looking at this ring, this lot of games. We thought, okay, Labour causes a harder, tough win. And I was nervous, you know, I saw the two lineups, I was nervous at the start of the game because they have obvious quality. And I thought, we've played a lot of football, a lot of intense football. That second half against Brighton, we put a real shift in. It's a quick turnaround. How much does the deck take out of our legs, you know? And the way the half just evolved and we just started to grow into it and keep improving in camp and measured in the way we were keeping, you know, passing it and developing as the halfway in time, I was so impressed, so impressed with how we played tonight. It's unbelievable performance really. - Yeah, I know, that's why I can't wait to get into the second half. There's a lot of games to talk about. Kev, you mentioned there that Verdes, you know, picking up spaces and stuff like that. 20th minute, he played an incredibly delicious ball in behind a ring-pong and then Virgil van Dyke matched it with his defending on it. And then in the 21st minute, Trent Alexander Arnold doing something that two, three years ago might have seemed impossible, but covering Victor Boniface on a cross coming in from ring-pong from the right wing and Trent coming in from behind and matching Boniface stride for stride with strength, forcing him to take the ball wide. Boniface ends up flattering into the advertising forties at the end. Chris, around the 25, 26-minute mark, I felt like we were starting to reclaim control of the match and kind of start settling into it. And then I got this sneaky, sneaky feeling that they were gonna score. 'Cause it just, I don't know, it's something just felt like that. And it took a little while, but it was on the 43rd minute that the ball's in the back of our net. I don't think that there's a lot of semicasts did wrong there, really. It's a clear and obvious handball, semicasts saw it in the moment. You know, not much in the front ball, right? - To be honest, I thought, do we look at the offside? 'Cause from the initial pass, I thought you'd stood off side and then not got back quick enough. 'Cause I thought, once you can see the defender's number, you've got no chance. I think your front ball's rapid. So not many people are gonna catch him in first, but when you saw like the first replay, you've seen the handballing, "Oh, that's how he's flipped it past the net." You know, whether he means it or not. So it was quite a quick thing. But to be honest, aside from that, and I think we had the one verse little flick which Vadbik gets across, which they want a penalty for, it's never a penalty. For all their passivity, it was quite sterile. You know, Liverpool packed the middle, they packed the middle, and Liverpool's best chances came from going wide. I think we had the best of the half chances. But, you know, I felt at half-time, Nils Nils was a pretty fair score line. I think some of our fabulous fish in the telegram group were overly fretting over, you know, it's Champions League. You play one of the top seeds. Guess what? It's quite tough. And that, to me, that first off was very rough up in eaters. Don't give them an inch. Don't give them anything. Pack the middle. If you get it off, she doesn't break great. If not, let's just grind it out. And we saw, when we took half a second half, especially once we worked one little up, lay because it had to open up a little bit then. And that's where you saw the benefit of playing D.S. in the middle. And that's what killed them. As soon as they've opened up, they struggled. And Liverpool took advantage of that. And that's not because lay because they were a bad side. It was just, you know, it worked well for us. So, you know, I think we've got to give this team a little bit more faith. And, you know, if we're not, you know, doing the clock thing, and we're not too ill of after three or four minutes, or by half time, you know, it's nothing to fret. I think we all go for this more patience approach. - Yeah. And it's, if you're not up after two or three minutes, 'cause I mean, we, we get it at half time. And we did have a late chance at the end. Jones puts a lovely cross in to Gackpo. He drives into the, drives into the area, tries to get a shot off, it's left, but it's great at Riddekki, who I can't believe that a goalkeeper whose name is Riddekki is Finnish. I was just, I would have put dollars to donuts that he was Chetchy and or Slovakia and or something along those lines. - One thing though, on that goal that was chalked off, if he squared it, it would have counted. And Boniface was there for the pass. If he played it early, Boniface was there for a tapping and it wouldn't have, it wouldn't have been chalked off. The handball is only given because it directly led to a goal. - Yeah, by the goal scorer. - You know, by the goal scorer. So, there for the grace of God God God, we could have been going in one day or down at half time after putting in a really composed performance. That's to me makes what we did in the second half so much better because of how brave we were in possession. - Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I mean, sometimes you got to be good to be lucky, you got to be lucky to be good. We're in an half time. Obviously, we've got our football prizes.co.uk, which is going on still. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. All right, let's get into it. Ashley, Kev said, people need to get used to this not being up two goals after three or four minutes under Jurgen Klopp. It feels like what we can get used to though, Ashley, is scoring two goals in about two or three minutes. Because... - I love it. - Yeah, it's just like bang, bang. It's like you're just reeling from the first shot and then the uppercut comes and then all of a sudden the game's kind of taken away from you. But for me, the big change that came in the second half was it felt like Curtis Jones took his game and stepped it up a whole nother level. - Yeah, I mean, I thought he played well the whole game. I think the second half, he definitely elevated himself. But I would be totally fine if he is in our starting lineup for Villa this weekend, totally fine. I think that he's seizing his opportunity. And I mean, that's not because I'm trying to pit one player against another in our midfield, but I do think that he's giving us like something that we haven't had in that midfield for a little while. And he just, he brings that little bit of creativity and he seems like he's evolved in a way that in years past, he kind of lingered on the ball for a little bit too long. And I feel like his speed of thought just has accelerated this year by a couple, I don't even know if it's milliseconds, but he just seems to be making the correct pass. And some of the pass that he was doing today kind of reminded me of Mo a little bit. There were some just fantastic wonder passes from him. And I mean, going back to the two minutes, I mean, I love that that's becoming our signature thing. I, I jokingly called it two minutes of death in our chat together. And I kind of want that to be our thing. Like, you know, they always say that teams are at their most vulnerable after you score a goal. And, you know, it seems like Slut recognized that and it's capitalizing on that. - Yeah, I can't for the first goal. I think the fruit is born from Curtis Jones, being that fourth man into the box, you know, leading the press and pushing the line back because he's advanced. The ball comes to train Alexander Arnold and Curtis drops back into a little pocket of space in the midfield, Trent finds him with a lovely ball. He pivots, he gets his head up. He sees the run that Lucho's about to make and it is an inch perfect through ball. And I guess we know now that that Luis Diaz was just getting started, but that's a top finish. - It's, that goal was coming though. You know, the pressure had been building all the way through the second half. We started off the second half brilliantly, completely dominated almost all of the second half. So it wasn't the case of if we were going to score, it's going to be a case of win. It's going to be, who's going to pick the pass to unlock this stubborn defense because they were dropping back. They, they've retreated about 15 yards at the start of the second half. And they just kept dropping and dropping and dropping. We were just more and more dominant. That vision to see the pass in the first place is one thing, the, the composure to execute us and wait us perfectly to take that's over out of the equation and the Lucho to just know that the keeper is going to come. And that chip, I mean, no one was getting back on the line, on the cover, adjusting, you know, even if someone wanted to, there was enough pace on us to take everybody out of the equation. That was a sublime goal. I'm telling you now, if Florian Wertz played that pass, be waxing lyrical about it and asking how much do you want us to pay for him in the summer? You know, it's an outrageous bit of skill. It was a fantastic goal. - Yeah. And, and lovely to see the risk of, I guess you call it a risk, of playing Lewis Diaz through the middle, coming to fruition. And Brackey, it, it works again on the second goal because Mo and Lewis play a little one, too, in the middle of the park where Diaz has dropped deep from that striker role. And he's showing much better awareness around him, playing from that central role than I would have given him credit for because, you know, when he first came in, he was chalk on the boots, you know, cut into the middle, looking to do something with his right foot. And the last two games now, we've seen him pop up in that middle location. He's just looked fantastic. And I mean, Kev says what a pass from Curtis Jones, but the cross from Mo Salah is unbelievable, inch-perfect, and Cody Gacko, no doubt it. - No, David Delt was one of the flag, what if you're like, oh, fuck sake. So, so, yeah, but no, really good header. And I was pleased with Gacko because it is the man in full and he's, you know, just keeping that, keeping that goal. And I think that's his first Champions League goal for, for us this season. So, and now Mo, I mean, Mo Sal ends up with two assists tonight. So, that is now nine goals and nine assists this season in 16 games, which is just ridiculous, you know. And just according to context, that Louis Diaz is now also on nine goals and all comps. So, we've leveled that with Mo, with his hat trick. So, you know, I can't think of what Louis D and Ashley will correct me, as Louis D has ever got double figures for us. And listen, he wasn't getting much of the ball first half, but that was because of how laver goes and played. They packed the middle, which he's not going to get, you know, the idea is to run in behind. As soon as he gets a gap in behind with his pace, no one's catching him. And it's a clever way of giving Darwin a rotation and a rest but also negating the lack of a jotter. The jotter doesn't have the as his pace but he has that clever movement in behind. And I think that suit, I think in that sort of game, it suited him to it. It just gives us a different way of doing it. By the way, I suppose I mentioned Mark Plattberg was on commentary and he was straight away going, "Yeah, it doesn't be chalked off-side." You can't see from this, but the angles we've got, you know, it's not quite lined up. I think it's been chalked off-side. It looks comfortably off-side and it showed the real work. So thanks to that market too, no. Fucking hell. - I saw the cross 'cause the cross came in first time and it was on his right foot and it was just the perfect trajectory. It wasn't looping. The cross had it. - It was a fantastic, but the header was made by the cross. The pace was all on the ball. All he had to do was get his, you know, just don't be a 50-pence head and just stick your head on it and you'd be grand. You know, all the poor power was on it. But when you saw the defender's leg come back on the replay, you knew he was gonna be tight. And it was, it was really, really tight, but it's lovely. The move deserved the goal because as someone said in the trailer, it all came from the ref giving the advantage to play out. And it was a move from back to front that deserved the goal. And I'm just glad they felt. And the fact that it was two and two minutes, you know, you could sit back and relax and enjoy the rest of the game. As long as we weren't doing it, it didn't do anything stupid. You know, it was sounding so that's our fault we're in right there, you know? And as it turned out, no, we kept going. But at the end of the day, it was a two-nil against that kind of level of opposition. The game is still alive. You know, as Ashley pointed out in our chat, these lot like and they go. And if a side gets one, there could be in the ascendancy to get two. So we had to be really sharp. And that's, this is when I thought it would came into his own. When we were really pushing and really pressing and being aggressive, Canati and Van Dyke just mapped out. Anything that came in their vicinity, they mapped it all up. They were brilliant. - Yeah. Yeah, Dave formed, I mean, obviously slightly biased, being a Liverpool fan and channel, but it's the best partnership in the league so far this year. And I mean, I think the numbers bear that out as well too. Ashley Kev says, you know, we get the two goal lead and I was also expecting just the slot ball, death by a thousand passes, control the game, keep it controlled. We start to see some substitutions. Jones comes off for Dominic Sabaslai. That's wonderful for him to get his flowers because I think he was just absolutely, absolutely fantastic. Mo Salah almost immediately puts one on a plate for Sabaslai, he just doesn't quite do enough with it. Another wrap, the substitutions, Robertson, Bradley, Darwin, come on for Semicash, Trent and Gackpo. Gackpo capping off an absolutely fantastic week with four goals. And then when you think the game is going to peter out because that's kind of how we played with leads. So far this season under Arnus lot where you just protect what you have, you don't need to push for more. Louis Diaz just decides, I'm going to have a day and send this stadium into absolute raptures. Yeah, I mean, I think that he was in the right place at the right time, especially, especially the last goal. But I'm really intrigued about how we're using our front line right now. I think that putting Gackpo exclusively on the left was very interesting. I think it was very telling today that again, like, SWAT could have put Gackpo through the middle like Clupton and he chose not to. And I actually think we saw what Diaz can do in the middle and he can kind of play that Bobby Firmino tap in role that we haven't really had. And I would love to incorporate that back into our game. And I think that that was what I took away from his finishing today was just, he was in the right place at the right time and his composure is something that I think we've kind of, I mean, it's not like we've been lacking in any great respect because we've been winning and we've been doing really well. But there have been times where we've had the ball in really dangerous positions and we haven't gotten it over the line and seeing Diaz in that box. Like, just like right in front of the keeper and keeping the players engaged was, I thought a revelation. I would be happy to see that again. - Yeah. And he showed such good strength for his second goal, the third goal where I think it was Jonas Hoffman, maybe that tries to challenge him with it. And because he is a wiry dude, the lucho Diaz is, but he's just too strong for him. Most ball comes in and he just, one touch kills a dead. Ball takes a slight deflection going into the net, but it's, there's being in the right place at the right time, but putting yourself in the right place is actually even more important to it. And then have your local produce, the man from Cork himself, didn't really have a heck of a lot to do until all of a sudden he did. And that's the sign of a top goal keeper, isn't it? - Yeah. I mean, two outstanding saves. The same first finish was probably a bit poor. You'd be a bit angry at that. He'd be angry at that one, but two outstanding saves from Kelleher. And I thought he was good tonight. You know, he was clammy. He had the one in the first half where they had a snapshot from outside the box and he got his body right behind it. His distribution tonight was really good as well. Went long with it needed to, but it was quite comfortable playing it short into, into midfield. But yeah, that's what he's, that's the bread and butter. That's what he's there for is to make saves. And as someone said in the chat earlier on, he was desperate, they were all desperate for that king sheet, you know, and they deserved it. They worked damn hard for it. And Kelleher was again, you're not missing as good as Alison is, you're not missing it. And that's the best compliment you can give to the man. - Yeah, yeah, it's, you do kind of forget for a moment. And that is, it's so unfortunate because A, he's the best keeper I've ever seen played for Liverpool and B, he's just so damn handsome. But it's just easy to forget that we are in fact missing our number one goalkeeper because you can't ask for anything more from, from Kuvene Kelleher. Chris Darwin Nunes comes on and he seemed like he was bound and determined to score a goal while also being completely incapable of actually scoring the goal. He didn't quite, didn't quite fall for him, but I thought, okay, I thought Dovine did fine when he came on. We had the breakaway where he doesn't get the ball sub-light. If I'm honest, I thought the other forwards around him was shite movements because there's literally nothing for him to pass the apart from across goal, which is always getting intercepted. And then sets up, you get, I think he gets the assist for the hat trick. Well, he, he take it a shot. It just falls to Luke showing he takes a nice touch and finishes it. But listen, that's what you, at the moment we've only got four forwards. So as Kep point says, like, you've got to rotate them and you've got to be fair to the manager. He decides to put D as up front, get the hat trick. He brings Jones and he gets an assistant and is arguably one of the best players to pick. So, you know, he's not doing bad at this management law, 'cause he, I did, the best thing Nunes did is when he wasn't on the pitch, was when he was telling the lines and then he got, he got the gak pof side wrong. He was points, he was having a chats line. You can see he's, he's miles on, you're completely wrong. - Yeah, he's, he's got a little bit of snark about him. I think is, - I like it. - I'll show you one more. - Yeah. - How can you not? I, you probably hate to, you know, be playing against him or, you know, an opposition fan probably has just driven up the wall by everything about Darwin Nunes, except for his prepligacy in front of the, in front of the goal. - But I mean, to put it to context, I would do it, but I think that's our eighth clean sheet now in all competitions. I believe last year I've just done a quick check. I think we had 16 in all comps last year. So we're already halfway to what we did last year and we're like less than 20 games into the seat. - Yeah, it's good. So that just shows the improvement we're seeing, which is why I think we could afford to sometimes be a bit more risky in the second half 'cause the structure behind us is working better. So we trust the back door is gonna be short. So we don't feel like we're gonna get sucker punched. - Yeah, it's, it'll be interesting to see it come out in the wash. I saw some, I think it was a journalist talking about, speaking with Trent about when slot came in and how Trent was worried that, you know, he called him aside after practice and thought he was gonna tear him apart for being terrible at defending it. He was showing him clips of Trent defending in practicing. You need to change the angle that you're standing at by eight degrees to, you know, increase your ability of making a strong tackle and stuff like that. So I'm wondering just how many of those type of coaching changes from the Urban Club, beloved Urban Club, to the new man, Arna Slott, the flavor of the month who is delicious, by the way, that has just made this change to our defense because it's night and day from last season. Like the number of shows we had to come on here and just tear our hero over what we were doing at the back was ridiculous. But the final thing I want to point out, I absolutely loved it. Kev, you mentioned it in our WhatsApp group, the man management of bringing Kwanzan for Kanate late in the game. I think there's no tactical reason to do it. I don't think there's any reason to get Kanate off to save his legs or anything like that. I think that's pure man management to show Girale Kwanz it. You're good. - It was, yeah, I was delighted with it. As soon as I saw him warming up, I thought there was, agreed. There was absolutely no logical reason to make that change apart from going and see this game out, make sure we get this clean sheet. Nice to be able to take it off as well to give him his class. He was outstanding tonight. He deserved the run, standing ovation when he come off. But yeah, it was nice to be able to get him on the pitch and be there at the end, you know? So he's not, you know, he'll dust this off really quickly. You know, the best thing for Girale Kwanz at the minute is the next international break. Odds are he will go with the England of the 21s. I wouldn't be surprised if he captains them 'cause he's captain them before. - Yeah, I think he did last minute. - And he'll get two good games under his belt and come back for, you know, the next block of fixtures and he'll be fine and no worries about it whatsoever. But on the other, the only other player I wanted to mention before we get into chatting about everything. Last, it was bright and nice. I thought Salah played well within himself. He was good, but thought he played well within himself for a large part of that game. Tonight he was outstanding. It was get the ball out to him as much as possible. Hincapé didn't know what to do with him. He didn't know what a stick or twist. Armaldo was not a left winger, a left wing back in a traditional sense. He was more of an inside left forward, inside left midfielder. So every time Virgil could get the ball out of his feet and switch it, he was switchier to Mo. And Mo was getting the ball and going up players and I thought for tonight he was outstanding. He was brilliant. It was great to see him. You know, the fact that he's played, I think he's played upwards of nearly 1,100 minutes so far this season. You know, a good chunk more than any of the other forwards. And tonight he looked like, you know, he'd had a nice couple of weeks off and refreshed and relaxed. The fact that he's playing such a volume of football and he's just hungry for more. You know, that's all he cares about is goals assist, running, he was brilliant. - Yeah, it was. And I mean, it's a tough not to crack when you've got a left side of the center half stroke left back in Guerra and Cappier and then Gremaldo there to help double up on him. And it was a pretty good running battle actually all night. I'll give credit to Danny Machiaele. I thought he refed a pretty good game tonight. You know, there was a couple of calls that Mo didn't get in the second half. It seemed like they were pretty obvious fouls. There's another one that Curtis Jones got fouled on the edge of their box. I thought that one was an obvious foul. But other than that, he kind of, he let that battle between Cappier and Salah kind of run all night. Ashley, who would you like to sing as I'll let you go first? - Again. - Again. - Again. - It's okay. - From then to the match. - I feel like I cheated, I feel like I cheated. So I'm actually going to hand it off because I cheated last time and I went early. So I will go third. The other two guys can go first. - What about me? - Apparently I can't go. Okay. - I'll be the host. - Yellow host. - Yellow host. - And I don't even get a say. Chris, fine. You get the honors. Who would you like to name first this man out of match? - I'll go for the open goal. I'll go for Lucha. Just, you know, a guy gets a hot trick. It's a bit of an easy one. - Yeah, I'm going to name it. - Yeah, I'll go to Lucha. But I already mentioned to Jones and Caratica who thought they were excellent as well. - Yeah. And it's a comment from Herschel Benting saying, "Please, please, please, can we put some respect "on our Liverpool supporters in that stadium?" If they were majestic, if Louis Diaz can just keep putting in performances and picking up the goals to just keep that song going. I said it out to the last show. It just, just let it go and let it go. So I can't even imagine what it was like in there in that final 10, 15 minutes when he scores and then scores again and makes it a hat trick. And the song is just rolling and rolling and rolling. Kev, thoughts on Diaz? Do you have anybody else to put forward? - Look, the right answer, the only answer really is Diaz. I honestly thought Caratia was brilliant. So given the players that he had in front of him to, and they all came down his side more or less towards the end for the majority of the game, they couldn't have prepared to face, for Boniface the way he played. That's something you had to work out on the fly. And it was his ability to see him off. So often, it just broken. He broke his heart in the end because Boniface just stopped. That's why they hooked him in the end. It wasn't the case of Patrick Schick who's gonna come on and change the game or anything. Caratia had just fucking broken. For me, I have no problem giving him this class tonight. - And there you go. And Ashley, because of your own generosity. - I'm gonna go with Jones. I think that, I mean, he needs to have more children because ever since he became a father, I feel like he has gone up a level. And maybe that's just the confidence that he's feeling and whatnot quite, I mean, the more that we see him in the midfield at this point, with this form, the better. - Yeah, he's kind of reaching that undroppable sort of form that you see on it 'cause he was just absolutely excellent. I think they're all very, very good, very, very good shots. Clearly, it's, yeah, you don't score a lot of hat tricks and not get your man of the match. I would give a couple other honorable mentions. Again, Virgil van Dyke, he's just Virgil van Dyke. - Yeah, that's it. - He made a couple of blocks in the game. They had one where they had, they had an overload on our left side of our box and he gets over. He throws a block and I think it was a game spring pong. Might've been a game spurts. - Yeah, what he takes right in the ear. - Yeah, yeah, he takes another one right in the face. Like, it's just, he's so commanding and so calming and he covers so much ground, even just with his reputation and his aura that it gives Ibu Kanate the space to be darting into midfield to close down Boniface that's trying to stop, you know, drop short, pick a ball from whatnot. I also thought it was an extremely tidy game from Ryan Gravenberg again. I didn't think he had the best game against Brighton, but today he had a couple of those little shimmy drops to the shoulders where he just picks the ball and just slices through the midfield. And with him and Jones both playing like that, and as good as Jones was playing in that sub-slide position, that 10 position, the advanced one, I do think I wanna see him more playing beside Gravenberg because they both have that ability to get the ball, to either absorb pressure like Jones does, where it feels like, 'cause everybody, decent with the stick of, well, he holds on to the ball for too long. One of the things about holding on to the ball for too long is that you're not losing the ball. So yeah, he is holding on to the ball for too long, but he very rarely loses the ball when he is holding on to it and then spins us around and drives us forward. And Gravenberg, he just makes the pressure miss him. He just has this ability to make whatever defensive pressure is coming around him, to absolutely miss him. - Jones has sort of drawn fouls as well. - Yes, that's what, plus when you don't mind, he holds the ball too long 'cause he gets the foul. I think in his early days, that was probably what was catching out, which was when he was getting caught on the ball, he wasn't within the free kick. So that putting the pressure is now, he's a bit queued to with it. So which thing does he have to rebuild? - His body positioning is brilliant. The other thing about Curtis Jones tonight, from the front, he won four out of five ground duels. So when he was getting in and around the ball to win it back, he was a problem. You know, he's growing into his body now. You know, his early career was hampered by injuries and growing pains, very similar to Gerard with his back problems. And it seemed like every time he would get ahead of steam, he'd pick up a knock and it would knock him back. And we're starting to see now the Curtis Jones that we all hoped was in there, you know, and the confidence and, you know, the arrogance of the player. You know, because you have to have an arrogance to be able to play, if you're a local lad, you have to have a bit of arrogance about you as well. And he's got that, you know, and didn't to be able to back it up with the quality. Yeah, he was really, really tough here. Somebody said as well there, I mean, look, nobody had a bad game. - No. - You know, cost that was good. Trent was good. Court of Gaqpo, really, really good. It was, do you know what, the versatility of Luis Diaz, allowing Gaqpo to be able to stay wide and to play off that wing and be comfortable going either way. - Is your cold making it hard for you to get to sleep and leading to a bad morning? (dramatic music) This is the sound of your ride home with dad after he caught you vaping. Awkward, isn't it? Most Vapes contain seriously addictive levels of nicotine and disappointment. Know the real cost of Vapes, brought to you by the FDA. He's such an asset and it's like, you've got two players who can do it. But I think I'm much prefer to get both staying on the left and Dias because of his strength and his ability to drop in, take the ball, play a quick pass, play a quick one too and move on to the play. I think he's probably better suited to the way this version of Liverpool is playing as playing as a false nine as an option if needed. So having that string to your bow as well is brilliant for us. - Yeah. And the man with the unpronounceable first name, a glitchy with, I would say, comment of the night. The fireworks in the first never let up but once they finished they entered and failed because yeah, it was a massive, massive sea change from first half to second half. And unlike against Brighton on a weekend, we didn't play piss poor in the first half. We played decent in the first half. We just stepped it up a level that they couldn't, they couldn't compete with. There's some quotes that Ashley's got for us here. Where did it go? I literally just had it. - I've bombarded you with that. - That's okay, that's okay. I can handle this stuff. I just wanted to find a lot about Van Dyke because he was one of my mentions from out of the match. Arness Lot talking about VVD says, what I like a lot, Virgil sometimes, especially after the Euros, he got criticized for not stepping into the midfield. I would advise everyone to look at this game. He was constantly stepping into the midfield. And that's something that I pointed out on a fair number of shows is that both him and Kanate seem to have been given a lot of license to just step up 10, 15 yards and try to cut that ball out in there. More quotes from Arnie says, we took more risks, second half. We weren't afraid to go one, B1. We said at halftime, just take the risk. Because they played without a nine, they had a lot of possession, but they weren't a goal thread in my opinion. Ouch. (laughs) Yeah, he's not wrong. Arness Lot goes on to say, Curtis Jones played an incredible pass and you saw the speed of Lucho. The pass was just as good as the goal in my opinion on Cork's own Praveen Keller. He says, we only needed him three, four minutes before the end. Till then we defended really well. We were comfortable, whether it's Allison or Praveen, when we need them, they show up. Ryan Gravenberch on some media duty after the game says, we did really good. We played with more intensity. We scored four really happy tonight. Just some nice fun stats. Louis Diaz is only the second Colombian player to score Hatrick in the Champions League after Faustino Esprita for Newcastle against Barcelona in 1997. It's also the first time Lebercusen has conceded four or more goals in the Champions League away match since September 2013 against Manchester United. It was also our first goal in the Champions League in two years, set Mo against Rangers the last one. Yes. Yes, yeah, it would have been. Ryan Gravenberch on Curtis Jones. He says, ah, even I didn't see the pass. Curtis is a really good player. It's a slight understatement. Slowed on if Diaz can play up front again. Yes, it could happen, but it depends who is available last season. I think it was more Cody who played as a nine. That is also a possibility on Diaz's luck. It was on to say, I only have four attackers available at the moment. Darwin started to play a bit more, but with this fixture list, it is impossible to play them all. Continues not only to people in Columbia love Lucho, the fans of Liverpool love him as well. I heard them sing his song a lot and the manager loves him a lot. Lucho for me is a starter. Managers changed their game plan when they come to Anfield. We saw that today. I've never seen Boniface play from the left. They played as out of nine. That's why they overloaded the field. Just the stuff this man says in a post match press conferences, it is like he's throwing shade. It's illuminating to what's going on behind the scenes. Like Ashley for the resident quote hound of the channel. It has to be just pure goal for you. It's great. And there was an interview he did recently where he talked about speaking to the media. And he talked about how people have been criticizing him for giving too much away. And it was actually really illuminating to hear him speak about that. He said the things that he gives away are just tiny little nuggets that every other manager would know. And that he's not actually giving anything away in terms of tactics that's going to cause a threat. But he was saying that maybe it's just looked at that way because there aren't any managers that actually do that. There aren't any managers that are this transparent. And I think that we're seeing that, we're appreciating that. And I don't know, it's nice for him to speak to the public as if they have an idea about what the hell is going on on a football pitch and was said soccer because-- - Not just soccer, yeah. - I need it. My brain is fried. - Instabana. But no, it's just it's very refreshing to see him talk in a way that it just feels like he's talking to an intelligent audience. But I genuinely think that the fans of this club are quite intelligent and can understand what he's saying. So I love it. I hope that other people love it. And I think that it's creating sort of a bond and something unique. I think when we go back to the summer and we were talking about a spot, we were saying the one thing that we didn't want him to do was just be a clone of Klopp. We wanted him to kind of have his own personality. And also just for that to develop organically. And I think that that's something that we're really seeing. We're seeing his personality just like come out by degrees every single week. And it's fantastic. I think that I'm personally becoming more and more like just connected to him as a coach. And I think that that was something that I had a really hard time imagining when Klopp left. I was really hesitant to become connected to him. But I think that he's just doing a really good job of endearing fans to him. Yeah, and it's in such a genuine way. Like there's nothing about him that reeks of pretenses or putting on airs or anything like that. Chris, there's another shout for man of the match actually from Scouser Pete. It is Amorim is his man of the match for giving false hope to those sad pathetic cretins at the other end of the East Lanks road. That is a big result for Manchester United today, beating Man City in the Champions League. - It is, it is. Well, it's close to look at to it this season. And I'm also going back to it. It's the first time in six and a half years that the City have lost three gains back to back. - Is that pre-pep? Does that pre-date pepper is already all the last three in a row for him? - Not sure. No, no, I think that would have been pep. So, it doesn't have to be very often, bro, that way. So, what I mean, obviously they got injuries because they were playing the young lad at Centreback even though they had AKA and Walker in the bench. - Yeah. - Who didn't bring on? - Yeah, that's a decade at the back. I'm sure it's pronounced Pusei, but it's, ooh, that's a tough one. Simpson Pusei, another quote from Ashley that is not Liverpool related, but wink, wink, nudge, nudge from Bernardo Silva. We're in a bit of a dark place right now and everything looks to be going in the wrong way. Kev, on a scale of zero to zero, how much sympathy do you have for Manchester City football club? - Yeah, they can build a bridge and get over it. I mean, look, they're looking at this tonight as they look. And you can see, everyone can see that their squad is thin. We've said this for the last couple of windows and yeah, they're struggling at them in it and that's, you know, good, you know, welcome to reality. But the truth is, they're sixth in the table. They'll qualify no problem. And the second in the Premier League, it's hardly a dark town. - Yeah, it's hardly a crisis. But it's very telling how much of a Miss Roger is today. They're far and away from being a one-man team. But that one man makes a massive difference to how they're able to play. - It's almost like he's a worthy ballon doorway. - Oh look, I mean, I've been seeing it for a long time that he's the best player in the world by an absolute show. I don't think it's even remotely close. I mean, he's a worthy winner of the ballon door. He was outstanding last year, just so happens he plays in an unfashionable position. But look, Man City, they're gonna win more games. But I've been pretty consistent in saying it now. The games that they're winning, they're having to work really hard. A lot harder than normal to get the odd goal wins. And they're not saying they're gonna fall away or they're gonna, they're not gonna kick into gear. But I'm still waiting for them to, for their season to start and to spark. And it's, there's not something to be doing that yet. And without Roger or Kevin De Bruyne, they look devoid of quality in the middle of the park. And no matter how, you know, the longer that carries on, the harder it's gonna be for them as the season rolls on. Because it's not almost sides will fear them or less or anything like that. But I think sides will quite happily sit in knowing that they will get, they will give up chances. They have been giving up chances. I mean, tonight, yeah, scorelances four or one. You know, but there's two penalties in that and they miss the penalty as well. And Lisbon are a good side, especially when you look at some of the players that they have. Gorker is, is gonna, is a top, is a top top, is a top player. But the other one they have, and we were talking about him before on here, is Yvonne Pedro Guncháves. He's a quality footballer as well. You know, and you've got players like Trincow as well, been around the block, you know, been at big clubs. They've got players that can hurt you if you're not on it. And it was a massive deal for them. It was a massive game. Last Champions League game for Amarin. Amarin is revered there for what he's achieved at sport. And, you know, there's only ever gonna be three clubs in Portugal that are gonna win a title, but they've been offered for a long time. And he brought massive success to them. So him leaving is a big deal. So the players you can tell from a performance like they put in tonight, how much they revere him. But it wasn't the only one tonight, you know, there was shock results up and down the list tonight. You know, you can go through some of them there. I mean, Monaco beat Bologna one nil. Dortmund one, Sturm nil. Celtic beat in Leipzig 3-1. That's huge for Celtic. Lille Juventus won one. But the biggest one of the night really is Madrid losing at home 3-1-2 AC Milan. When you look at, when we beat Milan, it was, yeah, it was AC Milan, but they're afraid of work. Everyone said he didn't play any one. Yeah, yeah, but they're a faded force. They're this, they're that, they're the other. But on the flip side of it, Madrid always have the capacity to throw in this kind of performance. You know what I mean? Especially in the group stages, nearly rounds of the Champions League. They always take the horse in the one. And it's their second time doing it. They're gonna have to catch up eventually. Yeah, the table is starting to make interest and we didn't know at the minute, you know what I mean? We've only conceded one goal in four games. You know, I mean, a lot of sides across Europe are gonna be set up and taken notice of what we might be able to do this season. Yeah, it's... And now Chris, the ball's back in Aston Villa's court for tomorrow's round of Champions League matches 'cause they are the only team that could knock us off of our place at the top of the Champions League table. They'd need to win by four clear goals. I believe so. Yeah, they've got cup bruise away, haven't they? So... Oh, I mean, you're like masterclass. Yeah, cup could be. I mean, that's a winnable tie, but I don't know, they did tie a quite a bit away. It taught them, you know, so doing three OAs, back to back is tough. We, I don't know, we like to do it as yet. City have just come out of three OAs, back to back that. That's gonna be tough. That's gonna be a tough one for them. I think they'll win, but I don't think they'll win 4-0. So they're cupping, they'll put it up. I think they'll look for proper need. Four points for the last four games. I think they have four points for the last four games. That'll be, that was 16. I think we've all been working on that yet. 16's enough to get your top eight. Yeah. So it's nice now we're in a position where we can look and go, you know, the Madrid game now is a bit all led over us. It'd be, you know, not saying, "Abora Lu." It's important for them. It's important for them now. But for them, it's cruisers, which could play to your advantage. It could also make them very dangerous. But, you know, we, we could, I'm not saying, look, count your shakes, but you could be in a position by Christmas going, back to your box till March. Thanks very much. We can give some people experience of European Champions League nights, you know. Use that B list. Yeah. So who could be the next Nat Phillips to do it? Do an amazing drag bag. Yeah. At the minute, Real Madrid are in 17th. Yeah. Six points. You know, played four, six points, scored nine, conceded seven. But you look down further from there. Atletico Madrid are struggling. You know, Gerona struggling by a Munich are in 25th. PSG in 23rd. All the big hitters at the minute are struggling, whether it's a case of they're struggling for this, with this format, the fact that you don't have home and the way legs in the group stages, you know, you're seeding tent to matter a lot more in the older format than it does at the minute. And you look at, you know, at the top half, go Liverpool, Lisbon, Monaco, Dortmund, Villa, Man City, Brest, Inter, Arsenal, Juventus, that's the top 10. You know, it's like-- Remember, we got seeded into the group of death, too. Yeah. Oh, yeah, I mean, none of our fixtures, when you look at them on paper, I honestly think tonight was the hardest fixture on paper, of the Champions League that we've played so far. And we've just handled all of them so well. We've been really, really good. And it's no problem saying that. You know, I'm not waiting for a bump in the road at the minute where we are one of the best sides in Europe, not out in my mind now. Yeah, and Tarragas is asking if the top eight gets seeded for the Swiss system. So first, those gets the lowest rank. That is my understanding of it. I believe that is the way it goes, that the top eight get a buy, and then nine through 24 have their playoff. And then whoever comes through those playoff gains, they're then seeded based on where they finished in the league model. And you'll go 1-16, 2-15, 3-14, so on and so forth. So it isn't exactly anymore like there's dead rubbers that-- Like, there's one thing, I mean, I'll keep my full feelings on the new Champions League system to myself until we've had at least a full season of it, because no sense giving opinions on something that you haven't actually seen the full version of it yet. But that's one thing about it that is quite nice, is that there are no dead rubber games that we could get to match day eight. And it could be, well, if we win, we finish as the number one seed in the Champions League, which means that we'll play the 16 seed. And yeah, that would be better. It could be worse. You never know, Chris, there's a lot up in the air, and there's going to be a lot of amateur mathematicians doing a lot of number crunching, come, game week six and seven. Well, he looks somewhat like a Celtic in the old Champions League. I think they've lost two. You're probably almost there in last chance saloon. And that's when they start seeing teams like Salza go in. This is where we start rotating, guys, because we're not going to do it in yours. We just may as well focus on the league and try and re-qualify, whereas now they're looking going, "God, I could lose the first three, four, "but I could still qualify through the playoffs." So it means every team is probably going into every game now with a chance, whereas you tended to know with the old Champions League football, when there was like two, three games ago, if you qualified, both teams were like just playing French squads and doing like needless games. It's gotten to that element. That's probably the A positive of the new system. You know, if you're four games in in the old format and you won all four games, your last two games, you're playing the kids, you know, sorry, your last two games, because you're through and you're top of your group, you know, unless whoever's behind you has mirrored your results or are close to you and you've got to play them. You know, I'm liking this one. I've got to be honest, because at the minute, there is something on everything. Everyone's got something to play for. And it's wide open. - But at this point as well, if you do lose a game or even lose two, it doesn't feel like the end of the world. - The end of the world. - Okay, well, you know, could you still go ahead? Well, if we get to 12 points, that's probably the for a playoff. So you're still in your, to the least, February. - Yeah. - And that's the way you're looking at it. - Nice. And just a quick update, we are 80,691 minutes away from the transfer window opening. So, you know, everybody make sure that you cut all your, that's just Brian O'Sullivan. That's his job. Ashley gets quotes, "Christ deals man of the match awards." And Brian O'Sullivan tells us how many minutes until the window opens or close. It's as, it's as simple as that. But yeah. - I also wound up as well. I don't just steal quotes. - Just before the, before the show, somebody has to go by Chris's house and send him a little twist. And then, and Kemp is grumpy. And Kemp is grumpy. But you know who's not grumpy, Brian O'Sullivan, your cows, because they've had a nice towling down, but also all of us here in the glorious fandom that is Liverpool Football Club. It's just, keep it rolling. I mean, Ashley, you got anything else to say before we go? We got another match coming up on Saturday. And then thank goodness, another international break. Boy, I really did miss international football. - Yeah, I said we haven't had enough of this. But I mean, just enjoy it. Like, you know, like Gavin said, just have a good time. I feel like so often we've gotten into these title races and we felt like the world is like closing in and we don't get to enjoy it. Just enjoy it. Like, it's like a free hit. It's fantastic. So I'm just going to enjoy it for as long as it goes on. - Yeah. And yeah, Chris, Paul Giovanni's pointing out that you're also enjoy a little bit of amateur Twitter trolling, which is... - Oh, I see. I like the transfer window, Jenn, 'cause I then sort of retweeting all the random Twitter accounts that contradict themselves and ask them which one's true. And they never respond. But I'll be honest, it's hours are forward because it's the internet. It's not real and people like to be self-important by literally making up being ITKs. It's so funny. Honestly, just have a feel. They just have for one, an ITK account of his brilliance. - For 40 years ago, you would have just been throwing a ball against the wall for hours and hours and hours on your... - Now I guess why I don't rather the people in the internet. It's brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. - Yeah, Tom Boll is pointing out, there's a new cop chant. We all love Brian's cows. We all love Brian's cows. Kev, anything else before we go? Oh, actually I'm gonna zip back to you. Chris, good result on the weekend for the women. - Yeah, second one of the season. So up to fifth now. So it's been a up and down season. It's been one loss, two wins and the rest of it, just a lot of disappointing draws. But nope, we're now undefeated in eight away games. - There we go. - Decent. And we've got a nice, easy game of the weekend. Chelsea at home. So he literally just smashed everything five nil and then get out of second gear. So, yeah, that's gonna be a fun, suddenly afternoon for me and my daughter watching Chelsea. - Yeah, yeah. - Do you know what? When you're watching Chelsea women, you just sit there and just go and watch them because they're that good. - Oh, they've got some good players. - Yeah, they're that good that you just go there anyway. Yeah. It's great that they're playing against these teams. - I beat to be fair, we've actually won our last two home games against Chelsea. Not today, but you know. - There you go. - See, have a little bit of confidence, Chris. Have a little bit of confidence. Kev, anything else before we get out of here? - Nah, all good. Look forward to watching. I just looked at the games tomorrow night. There's not any standout fixture. So just dig out one game and see how it goes. And look forward to Villa Saturday night, eight o'clock. What's all that about? - That's it. That's okay. I'm making an emergency cross-country road trip in the next two days. And I might just get back in time for me as a 2PM start. So I'm loving that late start on Saturday. It is a strange. - I'll definitely watch an international. That'll be the once in a while. - That sounds good, actually. That would be good. - That sounds like a one snooze fest for me, but. - I know, but it could be so funny 'cause you have to go all the way. - It's grumpy cat. - Grumpy cat. - Not grumpy cat. (laughing) - There you are. - Oh, I told you I'm tired. - Yeah. - Thank you, everybody, for joining us. It has been another glorious day of watching, supporting, and commenting on the Reds. We've gone to and from Anfield once again, a four-nail victory. Absolutely fantastic. 12 points out of 12 in the Champions League. One more game in this block before everybody gets a little break. Two weeks of boredom is somebody pointed out in here. I'm gonna go for tacos tonight because there's absolutely nothing else happening anywhere in the world tonight. So don't even worry about it. Turn your notifications off, people. Not for this. I just mean for the general world, but we'll see you after the next show. Adios.
