While the 2024 election is barely in the books and President-elect Trump will be inaugurated come January 20th of next year, but we're already trying to read the tea leaves of the next presidential election. We check in with I Heart Media's White House correspondent, John Decker. John, good morning. It's funny. It feels like the election cycle never ends. We get somebody who is elected and they're already thinking, "Well, who's going to be the replacement of that person?" I'll start with this. Should it be assumed just because he is the vice president-elect that JD Vance would be the leader, at least on the Republican bench, come 2028? Well, no, I wouldn't assume that. The reason I say that is you have to go back in time, but you think about Al Gore when he was running to succeed, Bill Clinton, he was challenged. He was challenged by Bill Bradley at the time. There were a number of challengers to George H.W. Bush when he served as vice president to Ronald Reagan in 1988 and he wanted to succeed, Ronald Reagan as president. Bill will be some challengers, no doubt about it, but JD Vance certainly will have a head start a leg up over the competition for those who wish to succeed Donald Trump in 2028. John, I've already seen some odds and some people guessing who could be some of those names. What are some of those names that are already being tossed out for 2028? Well, let's talk first on the Republican side because you mentioned JD Vance. There are a number of Republicans that have presidential ambitions and some of them will actually be likely in a Donald Trump cabinet. I think that Marco Rubio, the senator from Florida, may indeed be the next secretary of state for Donald Trump. I think Tom Cotton, the senator from Arkansas, may indeed be the next defense secretary for Donald Trump. Both of those individuals have presidential ambitions and I would not be surprised to see them challenge JD Vance for the Republican nomination. Those are just two names that come to mind and let's not forget Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, although Ron DeSantis will be at a little bit of a disadvantage in this sense. He's term limited. By the time that 2028 rolls around, he will no longer be the governor of the state of Florida. He'll be a private citizen. On the Democratic side, there's a crowded field, a deep bench as well. The number of governors, the governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, the governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, the governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear. You have Gretchen Whitmer from Michigan. Those are the names that I think likely will be trying to be competing for the Democratic nomination in 2028. John, do you think Kamala Harris is done? She is. Yes. I say that without reservation. She lost by 5 million votes. She performed worse than Hillary Clinton did in 2016. She really has no great argument to be the standard bearer for Democrats in 2028. She's 60 years old, but I think although she is young, in terms of being a politician, I think her political career is over after the loss to Donald Trump just the other night. Another name that I saw tossed out was former First Lady Michelle Obama. Is that one that's realistic in any way? It's not. She has no interest in elective politics. She loves her life, and why wouldn't she? She's a best-selling author. She travels the world. She weighed in, tried to advocate and be a surrogate for Kamala Harris on the campaign trail, but she has no interest in running for president herself. John, is there any surprise candidate we haven't talked about or you think about either side of the aisle that you would say, keep an eye on some person. They don't even have to be in government at this point, but say, watch them in four years or so. Well, on the Republican side, keep your eye on the possibility. I don't want to throw this. You asked me the question. I will give you an answer. Keep your eye on maybe Donald Trump Jr. What better person to carry forward the legacy of Donald Trump than his son, Donald Trump Jr. That's a surprise. I think he prefers to remain in the private sector personally, but that is certainly a possibility to keep your eye on four years from now. Only four more years, right? I hurt medias. Only four more years that will be here before you know it. I guarantee you that. I hurt medias, White House correspondent. It's John Decker. Thanks, John. Thanks a lot. Have a great day. Bye-bye.
