Enjoying us now on the K-way common-spirit health hotline to talk more about it is Amy Parns, the senior political correspondent for The Hill. Amy, thank you so much for your time this morning. We'll jump right into it. Walk us through the shift in optimism that we saw last night from the Democrats as the votes slowly started to come in more in favor of former President Trump. Yeah, there was a definite shift of the evening went along, kind of very similar to 2016. They came in very optimistic thinking that they would win. I was hearing more of that in recent days a few weeks ago, I don't think they were as optimistic. Her numbers had plateaued, they were looking at that internally, but I think they felt pretty good coming in to last night and suddenly there was silence. You couldn't find anyone, you know, Kamala Harris, people had all but disappeared and Democrats were kind of stunned that they were in this position again. They vowed to never, you know, they lived kind of traumatized for the last eight years and they never wanted to relive that moment again and here they were. And I think this morning there is this hangover about, you know, what to do next and what to learn from this and there is a lot to learn and I think that while they're not blaming Kamala Harris right now, I think a lot of them are thinking that they need to do some people searching about what they do, what lessons they learned from this and I think there is a broad party problem here. Amy, I'm not stunned that maybe they're stunned a little bit, is it more, they knew the race was close. That's what all the data showed. Do you think they're more stunned because they lost and it looks like it was a little more of a drubbing for lack of a better term and should they have been surprised by that? It was. It was a scholastic. They used Barack Obama's word from 2010. They really were, you know, all along, they felt like this race was going to be close and this wasn't close. Donald Trump won the popular vote and that's what's stunning on this morning. And also, you know, he won astoundingly, he won all of these states. I think they felt like they could win, that the blue wall was solid for them, that there might be a state that that would fall off, but that they, that it was pretty, that was their path to victory and the fact that they couldn't win Pennsylvania and other states just fell off very quickly, that Virginia was so close that Iowa, after that shock pull that came out earlier this week, showing that she was leading there, you know, that gave them kind of some hope that, that, that would translate to other places too. And when they saw these states falling off, it was a real good check. Amy, let's pivot over to Congress here, Republicans taking control of the US Senate still looks like the House, though, is a tight battle. What really stands out to you in those congressional races? I do think that it's one of the reasons why you saw people like Nancy Pelosi kind of push for, for the withdrawal of Joe Biden. I think that there were, there was a lot of concern at the time that they could also lose the House. Biden was the candidate, and I think they feel good about hanging on to the House. I think they're, they kind of expected that they would lose the Senate, that it was a rough year for them at the map wasn't favoring them at all, but I think they still feel optimistic about the House and that will be kind of where the power lies for them. And, and I think that that is, that's all they're holding on to right now. They need something to hold on to, and this is the bright spot for them in a very dark moment. Amy, two things come to mind with this. This is the red wave that we all heard about four years ago that didn't happen, that we were told was going to happen and did not. So it seems like it's four years delayed and, and on that same notion, do you get the sense, you appear on the political shows, is this more a rebuke of Harris Biden, the administration or more a support in, in love and in favor of Donald Trump? Well, people don't realize about 2020 was how close he came to winning. He came within 43,000 votes of winning back then, even though Joe Biden overwhelmingly won the popular vote, but, so I think that this was a movement that never really won a way that only gained momentum, and that's with shocking people. You know, they look at Latissa Latino vote in some of these counties in Florida and Texas in particular, and even in Colorado, and they're seeing that it's, it's very shocking that these people who traditionally should be Democrats, voted Republicans, so it obviously their message overall in the last few years was falling short of where people were, you know, they were really feeling the growth rate for bills and the gas pay, you know, bills at the gas station. And so I feel like they didn't really under, they underestimated where the people were, and we keep hearing that this was a viable election and even though Biden keeps talking about these strong jobs numbers and some strong economy, that people just weren't really feeling it. And I think that's sort of what happened last night. That was one of the big takeaways. Senior political correspondent for The Hill, it's Amy Parns. Thank you so much for your time this morning.
