Nationally, it's Christopher Columbus Day, but due to a change in Colorado law beginning in 2020, the state no longer recognizes today as a holiday for their employees. Instead, the time off was moved to the first Monday of October with what is known as Cabrini Day, which was established on her mother, Cabrini, and her work within the state on with us now to talk about mother Cabrini and some of her legacy, Denver-based Franciscan priest, Father John Lager. Father John, thanks for coming back on Colorado's Morning News. I learned of Mother Cabrini because my home parish back in the day was Columbine Catholic. We changed it to Mother Cabrini out there in Littleton. So I have some familiarity, but for those that don't talk about Mother Cabrini and what her legacy means and why we honor her on the day that is supposed to be Columbus Day, or at least a week earlier. Right. Thank you very much. Good morning. Thank you for having me. Good morning, Marty. Good morning, Gina. Mother Cabrini began her order back in 1880, and her whole approach was really to be a missionary group of sisters who really wanted to take care of the poor and most fortunate. Her greatest desire was to go to China. But the Holy Father at that point said, no, not to the East, but to the West, because there was such a great need for Mother Cabrini to take care of the immigrants, primarily here in America. So she came to New York, and then in the early 1900s, she found herself there in Colorado taking care of the miners and many of the Italian workers who were there in the city. And so her legacy really is one to give hope and encouragement and really modeled for them to keep the state as they left their homelands and came to Colorado. So we were so blessed to have this woman who modeled for us to care for those who are most in need. Father John, I remember we had you back on in March talking about the new Cabrini movie that came out. And maybe some people learned a lot more about the history and legacy back from that. But what are some ways that people can acknowledge or recognize and just take some time to mention Cabrini Day from last Monday? Great. That's really a wonderful question, especially for all of us who live here in Colorado. I think probably one of her great legacies is the mother Cabrini shrine that the sisters have continued to maintain. It was a, first of all, a summer camp for the orphans way back in the early 1900s. But today, it's a really great place of pilgrimage. It's quiet, prayerful. It's the place where mother Cabrini found the spring, where there was no water on the property. And she found that through her sisters, struck the rock. That spring continues to flow. And I think it's a great way for us to remember again that our whole approach to caring for the poor, the immigrants, oftentimes the forgotten and the abandoned. Oftentimes, you know, needs to be something that we do today. And she models for us that, especially in Colorado today. And I encourage people to certainly watch the movie, but more importantly, come to the shrine, come and experience a place where a sage herself walked, where she continues to have her spirit alive. And, you know, the staff there is so caring for all those who come to visit. - Father John, talk about mother Cabrini's legacy and her service to others, those that may be on the margins or forgotten or left behind or found less worthy back in that generation. And in today's heated times, it's probably a good reminder that we still need some of that service to be mindful of others that maybe don't have what we have or are maybe trying to escape bad situations and come here to do so. - Yes, and I think that's our responsibility as, you know, as a nation, certainly as a society and above all, by a local community here in Colorado, that we're here to take care of our brothers and sisters and all those who are most in need. And oftentimes, you know, she is a reminder to us because of our own faith backgrounds to really reach out and be our brothers and sisters keeper, especially for those who are in need. And I really do believe that Mother. Model that when, you know, she didn't shy away from places where people were really suffering and for us here in Colorado, she went to the depths of the mines and to visit with the miners there, she would find them under bridges and all over, you know, places that oftentimes there was no place for them to even have adequate housing or the appropriate needs of survival. And she was the one who reached out to them. And you and I have the same responsibilities today. - Father John Lager, thank you so much for your time this morning and acknowledging and recognizing Mother Cabrini, we appreciate it. - Thank you so much.
