Today, marking one year since the attack on Israel, which resulted in the killing of more than 1,100 people taking hundreds of hostages and sparking a still-expanding conflict in that region. Yeah, it's a day of mourning for the world, especially for the Jewish people, and hearing Denver a number of memorial events will be taking place throughout the day. Joining us now on the K-W-A Common Spirit Health Hotline from Denver's Temple Sinai, it's Rabbi Rick Reins. Rabbi, thank you so much for your time this morning. Looking back, marking one year now, witnessing everything that's happened in the matter of the year. What is the overall environment, the temperature of what we're feeling in the Jewish community here in Denver today? First of all, thank you for giving me a few moments to share. This is a day of mourning for us. And Jews and Christians and good people from all backgrounds are gathering together at various memorials, as you mentioned. It was the most murderous Holocaust of Jews since the Holocaust. Over 1,100 people murdered, right? And so today, we're gathering to memorialize and to consider what has happened since, because it wasn't just October 7th. On October 8th, we had the beginning of anti-Semitic attacks here in Denver and around the country, and it was reported by the Anti-Defamation League that there were over 10,000 anti-Semitic attacks, many of them violent, on campuses, around the communities, and the United States alone. And this is by far the greatest number of anti-Semitic attacks in a single year and the history of this country. And so we are in mourning for what happened in the murder of over 1,100 Israelis. These were people, again, of all faiths. They were of 14 different nations that the Palestinian Hamas people stormed in. They murdered people of Qablis be ali of the various Qablis, many of whom were working strongly with Palestinians to try to build bridges of peace, and they had cooperative ventures together. And instead, some of the Hamas terrorists came and planned all along to storm these peaceful villages to not only murder, but then to take, like you said, 250 hostages. About 100s are still there. We don't know how many are alive. They are using them as a human shield. So if the crisis that was begun by the Palestinian Hamas on October 7th, but then it was the outpouring of anti-Semitism in the year that has come. So we are in the midst still of this time of mourning and of preparing ourselves to still defend ourselves against anti-Semitic attacks. And I don't know if you saw or not that there are going to be many pro-Palestinian Hamas terrorism rallies today here in Denver and around the country, and it's as if they were coming to celebrate a lynching or a racist mob. Instead, they're focusing on celebrating the murder of Jews, the murder of Israelis. And so you're asking how do we feel right now? We feel outraged, we feel vulnerable, we feel that it's just beyond imagination that there will be in this country people, even on campuses. There was a threat that was going to be at the University of Denver as well, that there will be people who will celebrate the murder of Jews in this country. And so how do we feel hurt beyond description? Rabbi, I know you always preach a message of hope, but at times it can seem hopeless. I couch my question like this, we always hear about never again. Are we bereft of the history of the never again? If we become just care less or is there something more pernicious afoot when it comes to the anti-Semitism here and the troubles that have plagued the Middle East for thousands of years? That's such a great question. And the truth is there are the vast majority of people, all good people, all caring people, all compassion people. We can disagree with one another and not be disagreeable, right? And we rally together. I've had so many Christian friends who have reached out to me at Temple Sinai and throughout the Jewish community. We've had the various leaders, political leaders who have reached out to us. And tonight there will be a rally at Temple Emanuel and people throughout the community of different faiths who will say we stand against hatred. We stand for a sense of community that's respectful. And that's America. We also know that you know the history of this country. There's racism, there's bigotry, and there's anti-Semitism as well. That's the minority, right? There's a small group that does this. They cause such damage and they cause fear. That's what terrorists do. Terrorists don't take over a whole country. Terrorists cause fear. And that's what the Palestinian supporters are aiming to do. They come to our synagogues and they come to our rallies. They come to our events and they pound on the windows in order to cause fear. We're protected, we have security, and we're strong. But their aim is not to destroy us in the United States because they know it's not possible. But they do want to cause fear and they're doing it on campuses. They're doing it at government meetings where they take over and they're doing it against our synagogues. The vast majority of Americans stand against that. And so that's my hope. My hope is that we'll continue to have a growing number of people who say this is not right, it's not First Amendment, to spread hatred and to spread fear. And that's what these people are doing. From Denver's Temple Sinai, it's Rabbi Rick Reins. Rabbi, thank you so much for your time this morning. We really appreciate it. God bless you.
