"Alright, we're all set for the party. I've trimmed the tree, hung the mistletoe, and paired all those weird-shaped knives and forks with the appropriate cheeses. And I plugged in the partition." "Bartesian?" "It's a home cocktail maker that makes over 60 premium cocktails, plus a whole lot of seasonal favorites too. I just got it for 50 off. So, how about a clasmapolitan? Or a mistletoe margarita?" "I'm thirsty." "Watch!" "I just pop in a capsule, choose my strength, and…" "Wow. It's beginning to feel more seasonal in here already." "If your holiday party doesn't have a bartender, then you become the bartender. Unless you've got a Bartesian, because Bartesian crafts every cocktail perfectly in as little as 30 seconds. And I just got it for $50 off." "Tis the season to be… jolly-er." Add some holiday flavor to every celebration, with a sleek, sophisticated home cocktail maker Bartesian. Pick up your phone and shake it to get $50 off any cocktail maker. "Yes, you heard me. Shake your phone and get $50 off. Don't delay." Finding the right news podcast can feel like dating. Increasing school safety has long been the goal of the Deangelis Center Foundation which focuses on advocating for and providing innovative training for teachers, for responders and law enforcement. And starting this month, they're offering free training to those types of personnel who can take part in classes like de-escalation, addressing mental health and defensive tools. Joining us now on the KOA Common Spirit Health Hotline to talk more about it is the Executive Director for the Deangelis Center Foundation. It's Shawna Fritzler. Shawna, thank you so much for your time this morning. Oh, thank you for having me. I'm so grateful to you. These are some pretty incredible resources and tools that people will be able to use in their efforts in these de-escalation techniques. Can you tell us a little bit about these experience-based training programs and why they're so important? How are these topics chosen for them? I am so excited about these and thank you so much for telling everyone about them. We believe that everybody really needs to have access to this. So whether you're law enforcement, first responder, educators, education staff, school safety staff, but also us as a community. We want to make sure that everyone has a part in school safety. So we cover all of those different factors, red flag factors, to look for whether we're talking about suicidal ideation or homicidal ideation. And we make sure that everybody has access. And so we've got something for everyone. We have continuing education credits. We've got the scenario-based defensive tools training for our law enforcement and first responders. But can we have things like situational awareness, which is for you and me and anybody who doesn't have that specialized training, but who cares about their own personal safety or the safety of others, including their children or families. We also have ongoing suicide prevention training, which is really important. Our suicide rates in Colorado are so high. But we can make a difference with that. And I find that these trainings are extremely empowering and beneficial. I can't tell you how many people have been protected and their lives changed for the better. Shana, are there things that we know for sure, regardless of the situation, that work in helping prevent or at least minimize what can happen with the school incursion? Or you mentioned the continuing education. It just sparked the idea. Are we continuing to learn and evolve what you teach and what you're passing on information-wise to those in these situations? Well, sadly, you know, we started with Columbine. And all of our subject matter experts have been first responders to every tragedy within Colorado. And they've also responded to several outside of Colorado as well. We know they're heartbreaking every time we see one. But we already know the lessons learned, the mistakes that were made. So, we build on that with our training and provide everyone with an opportunity to take this training and make the mistakes while you're in training so we can correct them. And then we know when the next tragedy happens, those people who are responding actually have access to knowing that prevention effort to be more prepared and to respond more appropriately so we can protect more people. Shana, like you mentioned, these trainings all have different head topics and certain people can attend certain trainings. Can you tell us a little bit more of how they can apply? Who is eligible? And is it one training and one sitting? You walk away with hopefully some new knowledge of how to combat these situations. Yeah, it is one training in each sitting. So, you just go to deantellistcenter.org. You can go to the new trainings page or the trainings available page and you'll see the drop-down of everything that's there. We've got something for our law enforcement, first responders. You just register. And for those people who may be in rural communities or certainly have friends who are in rural communities, we do have hotel expenses that we can help with. So, all they have to do is contact me. And those are on the pages as well. You just register and won't get you there. Another thing that's been really, really popular is our women's self-defense training. So, you're going to be kicking off three separate ones of those for everyone to come and take these trainings. And we make it really easy. Don't just get an email from me after you register and you show up, take your training. And you can sign up for as many of these trainings as you want. Shanna, as we, or Shanna, excuse me as we wrap up with you, I want to ask something a little more expansive. Last night during the debate, they touched on the school situations and things and maybe solutions and everything else. I just wonder from your perch, when you hear elected leaders, politicians, maybe people that can help with some form of legislation. I'm not asking for a political stance, but do you look and sometimes shake your head in saying, "You still don't get the issue?" Or sometimes not an agreement saying, "Yes, this is something that will go towards making schools and making people in the school safer." Well, we have evidence-based trainings. So, we know that our trainings absolutely make both our schools and the community safer. As far as politicians, they don't want to get involved in politics, as you said. But we hope that everyone would be looking at this through a lens of making sure that those people who you care about in your life, your neighbors, your friends, your family are safe no matter where they go, whether you're sending those kids to school, whether you're just going out shopping in the grocery store, whether you're in a park, everyone deserves safety, everyone has a part in school and community safety. It's important that we have these conversations on a regular basis. It's also important that those elected officials really engage with people who are subject matter experts and make sure that their approaches are always data-driven. So, that has to be important as a response is important, but also the prevention and preparedness efforts are critical. Again, you can find all the information for these free innovative training programs to promote school and community safety at dangeliscenter.org. The comprehensive instruction begins in October and continues through 2025. The dangelis center foundation, talking more about these free classes, their executive director, it's Shana Fritzler.
