This is the Canucks Central Post Game Show. Back to Hughes of the line. Hughes with a shot through traffic, he scores. Special teams, special plays, special players. Queen Hughes had two goals last night against the Golden Knights. And he gets the Canucks on the board in Arizona. It's 1 to nothing. Keller, near circle, back to perfect side of the net. And a break of their scores. [MUSIC PLAYING] Who else but Dylan Gunther to tie the game for the Coyotes? With instant reaction from the players and coaches. Under two minutes left third period, game tie to one. Hughes with a long wrist shot ripped it wide to that. Now for Garlin, right circle, he scores. Connor Garland, Johnny on the spot of the right wing fires it. Past Connor Ingram and the Canucks go up two to one, with 1.51 left in the third. Have your say on the official home of the Canucks. This is the Canucks Central Post Game Show presented by the number 5 orange on the home of your Canucks. Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network. Satyar Shah with bickness are getting daggers for fast city Gregory's like you messed up the intro yet again. Were you trying to relocate them to Phoenix? Trying to relocate them to real city where they have a real arena. Not an arena that's smaller than the one that UBC Thunderbirds play at. Not just the state of theory. The theory. All right, the Canucks win 2-1. It wasn't necessarily pretty. It wasn't necessarily convincing throughout the entire 60 minutes. But what matters at this stage is the Canucks trying to finish first in the division ahead of the postseason. And with the Edmonton Oilers losing big to the Dallas Stars tonight, it's a big game in terms of getting the two points in the standings. We'll break that down a bit more. The Canucks still with a five point gap on the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton does have one game in hand. But with six games to go in the season for Vancouver, they're getting closer and closer to keep winning to taking that first spot in the division. And before we get to the feedback, we'll get to Randy here in a moment, but what was your big takeaway here tonight, Bick? Did the job, back to back, need to have it to improve performance, absolutely. But did the job-- and they kind of like took the life out of this game. It would be a classic road game. I know people want to see this straight ahead, high-tempo game after that Vegas game. But situation with the back to back and everything like that, what was it going to look like? I thought they completely take the life out of this game and did a pretty good job. Yeah, I mean, I thought that for the most part, I did not love the third. We'll get into the third a bit. But one thing that-- you know what? Gold Tenning is part of the team. She loves, and the third was spectacular. I mean, he was absolutely fantastic, helped the Canucks win 2-1 tonight. Well, let's welcome in Randy into the conversation, and Randy, and I mentioned this on the pregame show. I don't know if the Canucks win this game 6-1 even. I think we all kind of look at it and say, well, good, you guys, one convincing. But it's Arizona. The Canucks need to play better against playoff teams ahead of the playoffs. So I'm not sure, no matter what happened tonight's game, it was going to give anybody real assurances for the rest of the season. But in terms of getting the points, in terms of getting the job done, how did you feel about how they played tonight? Yeah, I think the first 40 minutes, when you don't give a team any high danger chances, even though it's won nothing at that point, it's not the most exciting brand to hockey. I'm OK with that, based on the fact that you didn't give Arizona anything. It's a third period where you start to give up more. Archer Shilov's really has to lean in there, make some big saves. That's the one area, the final 20. A little touch and go there, because you start to open up a little bit early in that period, guys. I think it was Patterson at the Blue Line, gives up the puck, creates a bit of a half chance going back the other way, and then Tyler Myers in the neutral zone. Those couple of moments, I'm not a huge fan of. I didn't like the penalty call on the second time around. I think Rick Tockett, if you picked it up on the cameras, didn't like it very much either. Kids do not lip read. But overall, that was a situation where I thought the opening 20. I'm OK with low event hockey, as long as you got the lead, and you're limiting what the team does over those 40 minutes. The third period, a little loose there, where your goalie does the job. But, Sat, I'm going to back you up on this. I'm going to go one step further. The Salt Lake Coyotes. How about we call it? Oh, I like that. Before I pass it to you, big correction. Connects to have a seven point lead on the undersolders. I didn't refresh Adminton and the Canucks. So the Canucks have a seven point lead. Adminton has two games in hand. All right, go on. I forgot what I was going to ask about now. OK, just overall in the third period. And we've said this a lot of times when the Canucks have been on the losing end of a game. And we would say, did it ever feel like the Canucks were going to overturn this one? And I like a large element of what they did tonight. But in your mind, Randy, did it ever feel like the Coyotes were in line to win this game? Not necessarily. I think there was maybe with about four minutes left in the third period where before the Canucks end up turning the tide again around right before the Connor Garland goal. There was about maybe a four or five minutes left. You start to wonder, OK, are the Canucks hitting that wall right now? Are they starting to get tired? Arizona is a team that hasn't played since Saturday against their Rangers, but that was the last game. They didn't do it. But in theory, I was talking a batch when we were in one of the break series. OK, is this team starting to hit that wall? But that play, I didn't necessarily see that. I didn't see an Arizona team outside of maybe a couple of saves from She-Lobs, who was strong. I didn't see a huge threat from Arizona. But I think when you're talking about where they stand in the standings, where they are in the central division, I can understand why some Canucks fans would say, hey, you can handle this team well before that fact. But as far as Arizona looking like they deserved to win that game, no, I don't think so. I think overall Vancouver, the way that they were able to be so dominant, especially in that second period, you don't get more out of that. That's probably the disappointment, if you're in that locker room. But Vancouver was the better team. It's just sometimes, if you keep that door open a little bit, if you don't get that second goal, you can eventually allow a team to get back in there. But I didn't think Arizona was beaming with confidence where they were the team that was going to win this game. I don't feel like they were going to win the game, but I really did not like their third period. The Canucks had the 1-0 lead, and here's Arizona. And Arizona's been playing spicy. They've been pretty reckless, creating offensive chances, taking opportunities, and they scored a lot of goals recently. So it's not like they've been this meek, toothless type of offense. They've been able to generate quite a bit of offense the last little while. But to let them take over the way they did, create the amount of chances they had in the third, I really didn't like it. And I thought, with the 1-0 lead, and you're playing Arizona, you do a better job of closing this game out. And Sealov's made a number of incredible saves, but eventually, they broke through there on the power place, just not a fan of being as passive as they were. And we'll hear from the head coach coming up in the third. But it's one of those things where-- I just want to see them close games out a lot better than they have. And they've coughed up a lot of leads. And they came back and went and Garland scored the game winner. And we'll talk about Quinn Hughes in a second. But I'm just not a fan of how they played in the third period. And we saw it against Anaheim, too, on home ice, on the final home game, where complete control, lose a two-goal lead. And then you have to kind of fight back to win that game. Yeah, I'm with you on the Anaheim comparison, because it kind of felt like that game to a certain extent where you've done a lot of good things defensively. And then what happens? A couple of moments in the third period. Yeah, sure, that penalty might not be a fan of it. But the fact of the matter is, even before that, at the beginning of the third period-- and I mentioned this earlier on where Pedersen, the offensive zone, Tyler Myers, in the neutral zone, there were some sloppy habits there where the Canucks did have to shore it up. So that led to a couple of transition attacks from Arizona. And a little bit later on, she loves has to make a good save on Kerfoot in tight. So and remember, there's even late in that second period, he ended up having to go right to left and makes an excellent save on Kesselring. I thought through 40 minutes, though, the Canucks were good. It's just that third period, a little bit of sloppiness. And that's something that Rick talk at his reference in the past to say, puck management, when you're ahead, you can't get careless, you can't take your foot off the gas. You have to get the puck deep. And on both of those plays, guys, with Pedersen, it was just a fumbling of the puck, but it goes back the other way. And the Myers one is just, he babbles the puck. And then, guess what? You're going back the other way, it leads to a chance. So I think there's a couple of moments that those weren't necessarily-- there was more than that, but those are key moments where, all of a sudden, you turn over the puck in a dangerous area, and it goes back, and it gives the other team confidence, and they hem you in a little bit. And that's what Arizona was able to benefit from, gives them confidence, gives them an idea of maybe that they have a chance in this game. Against some of the best teams, some of the teams that are destined toward the playoffs, like the LA Kings on Saturday night, those types of moments. And we've seen that with LA, where if you make a mistake like that in a neutral zone, it's probably going to go in the back of your net against the really good teams in the NHL, you can't do that. So it's about eliminating those habits or those mistakes. Because here, right now against Arizona, maybe on that place specifically, it doesn't cost you. But for teams that shoot to kill, that will be a goal or a high danger chance going back the other way. I think the Anaheim one's unfair, because that one-- OK, first of all, it's a two-- I think the Anaheim one is worse than what we saw tonight. It was a goal lead on home ice. But significantly worse, it was two goal lead, home ice, on a team that's on a back-to-back. So this one-- They're going to play it on Saturday, so they've had to throw in three days off between games. Right, but the Canucks were on a back-to-back. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't think Anaheim last time. Yeah, this one was on the back-to-back. And that one, being on home ice on top of that as well, to me makes worse. And also, I think the Canucks created more through 40 minutes tonight than they did against Anaheim that time. Because they probably should have been up 3-4 nothing in that second period. If put Colton isn't putting a full Nelson by Dylan Gunther, that's probably a goal. Blooger and McCay have each to have a chance. So they could have put this game away far earlier tonight than they did versus the Ducks, where I thought it was not as inspired coming off that Dallas game. Yeah, and when I reference the Anaheim game, it's more about just, can you finish off the game, right? Can you essentially extend the 40 minutes and have that type of third period that you saw in the second period? And listen, Arizona is a team that we can talk about a cellar-dweller seventh in the central, but they've been kind of confident the last few games here. So I can understand a rested team, a team that feels like they have offense in their game, which they've shown what's scoring 42 goals in 11 of the past games prior to this one. I get that. But I guess when you have that lead, and you're also a team that's at the top of the Pacific Division, there's the expectation of, all right, you continue it on. She loves play-dwell though, right? Those opportunities that did fall to Arizona in the third period. He took care of him, and that's what you have their goaltender. You've got a fresh guy coming in there. You've got a guy that, you know, through that Anaheim game where there's maybe certain things in his game that he was a little too active potentially on some of those plays in tight. Today, he was composed. He was ready to go. He was confident. He was controlling that area. And if there were any rebounds sitting there, he jumped on them. So I think with Vancouver, I would have loved to see just an extension of that second period, but taking fatigue into it. I can understand where you led up a little bit, because around that five-minute mark, I was starting to wonder if they're getting tired. But hey, that's what you got. Your young hotshot goaltender in there, he makes some saves. And the most important thing is, in the end, you get the two points. And your special players, staff up, Quinn Hughes, a goal and assist. Getting the goal is one thing. That play to extend and walk the line on that Connor Garland play, that goal. Your big guy steps up in the right moment to get that victory for you. And a second of a back-to-back, you'll take it and go to LA. Plenty of things to dissect over the course of a season and through 76 games. And when we look back at the 23-24 season, the thing I'm going to remember is Quinn Hughes, right? Yes, it's a rejuvenation of the market. And the franchise has re-stabilized and all these things. But this is like the emergence of Quinn Hughes at the highest level and the ability to put a team on his back from the back end and compete for honors. And this is a game where I look at and say, a moment where voters should be considering this game. 'Cause he was fantastic late in the game. Despite the penalties and certainly not one, that was on him. I love the fact that, you know, he's got four penalty minutes for sure. You don't like that, but you've got two minor penalties in the third period and how does he respond? He responds by saying, all right, I don't like that call. My team doesn't like that call. That's all right, I'm going to go out there and do something special. Guys, you know what, he's got three goals on the last seven shots that he's taken. And this is not a fluke. This is an individual that is so motivated right now. And yeah, of course, the Canucks haven't been fully happy with the way that they've been able to play the last little bit. Guys, we talked to JT Miller after the Anaheim game. They won, he wasn't happy. After the Vegas game, of course, a lot of players were not happy. But even in this game, you have that moment where you're saying, all right, on my penalty is when Arizona ties it up and how do you respond? You end up going out there. You create something out of nothing. You set up your teammate for that goal and sure there's some luck there. But how does that start? Him just walking the line, him creating space. And what I love about his game right now is on that first goal, especially that he ends up scoring. And we've seen this in the previous game against Vegas too, his ability to just wait for the right second to get that shot off where he's finding that lane. He's just waiting for just that little bit of space. And whether it's shooting for a deflection or shooting to score himself like he's done the last couple of games, this is a guy that is we marvel at his skating. We marvel at his zone exits and his zone entries. But now he's also saying, I'm going to be aggressive. And guys, when we talk to him at the beginning of the year, one of the things he mentioned was, I want to be aggressive. I want to attack the middle. Now the way he's essentially attacking every angle of the ice and going down that left hand side, going to the right, going around the net, it doesn't matter where he is. He's shown some of the best hockey we've seen in Vancouver ever. And I'm going through my history as growing up in this city. You guys have watched a lot of hockey in this city as well. He's doing special things. And the fact that now he's at what? 86 points. He's a 70 assist defenseman. And he's got a shot. It's special. And tonight as well, he moved past-- he's holding for the second most points among defenseman in franchise history. He's going to pass Alex Eller next year. This is a guy that is still getting better. And he's already, in my opinion, one of the best players that's ever played for this team. Well, I mean, Raymond says, Quinn, he's going to go down as a Canucks best player of all time. See legs, text, and it says, Quinn, he's just simply the best player to ever least them up for the Canucks. Wow. And I mean, the way he's playing, you're not necessarily wrong. And he-- It's not hyperbole. It's not. I mean, he's past Matias Oland. He's what? Now 82 points behind Alex Eller for the franchise lead for most points for defenseman in a career as a Vancouver Canucks. I mean, he might beat that tally if he's healthy by next season, which is absolutely astonishing. I mean, it's incredible how dominant he is. And the way he just controls games-- this is about-- I know a lot of people, even with the performance today, because it wasn't overly convincing in the third period and in some bad moments or whatever. And I see Lloyd and others texting again and saying, the Canucks aren't even going to beat Edmonton. Edmonton's going to catch them. And so people still feel that way despite the fact that the Canucks won an Edmonton loss today. Until you clinched the division, I think people are going to have some doubts, whatever, fair enough, or whatever. November 6, that was over then. But I get it. I get it. Don't count your chickens and count your eggs, all that. Let's see what happens. But it's one of those things where he's in complete domination. And when you get into the postseason, if the team can play a lot better as a squad, the way he controls the game, the way he can dictate. If you look at the best teams that go far, they have a defenseman that can do that. And the fact that Quinn Hughes is playing that way, there's a reason why the Dallas Stars have been so dangerous in the playoffs the last little while. They have Muir Heisken playing 27, 28 minutes a game, absolutely dominating for the most part. And that's something Quinn Hughes is doing at an even higher level right now. Yeah, the tempo of the game is the way that he can speed it up. He can slow it down. He can wait for his teammates to get involved. He's a guy that just is such a problem for a forecheckers when you're trying to find him. And he's able to skate away from trouble. And guess what? Launches an attack. There was that moment when you got to the penalty box. And unfortunately for Niels Omon, he couldn't hit that, collect the puck cleanly. But guys, we might be talking about a breakaway goal or a near breakaway goal if Omon doesn't delay on that and is Baldwin the puck there. So to me, this is a guy that is able to control the timing in the tempo of the game. But he's also such a enhancer of players around him. And those 70 assists, like the one today-- I don't know if he intentionally tried to shoot it off the boards. I'm not sure if he was trying to use the active boards there. But when a player is that special, you don't doubt it because these guys can do amazing things. So what I love about his game is that continual internal-- just looking internally to say, what can I do to make myself better? And every year, every off season, you know Queen Hughes is going back to Michigan and saying, all right, I like my game, but I didn't like it that much. This is what I can do better. This is what I can do better, whether it's a plus minus, whether it's attacking the middle of the ice, whether it's getting better defensively. And once you have your leaders thinking that, it trickles down where everybody on that team starts to think that way. And it sets a culture. It's a word that we've talked about. And I know there's going to be people texting in saying, hey, guys, they beat Arizona 2-1. But that individual performance tells you, when you have a player like that and you have a couple of players like that, you can win those games where you don't have your best effort. And Queen Hughes, to me, I think he's one of those guys now that he is the best defenseman on the planet. I know there's a lot of conversation about Kayle McCar and he's got the credentials with the Khan Smith and the Stanley Cup and the Norris. But as of right now, as of speaking this season, guys, I don't know how he doesn't win the Norris based on the way he's played this year. So Sad and I were talking about that Garland goal. And not because Garland scored it and Sad's got a Nintendo. But more-- Hey, I mean, I'm going to-- You're going to go. You know what? That's what I should have brought up in after ours. I missed a boy. You should have. You should have. More about how that play, it's a classic broken play that they're looking for, obviously. And Garland's able to convert it. And we've had this conversation in the last little bit, as far as overall offensive chance generation. And do they look to try to manufacture those broken plays? Whereas this one was, Queen Hughes trying to make something happen and it's almost organic by nature. And this is the type of broken plays I look at and say, OK, this is what you want to do, where sometimes they try to do the pad pass on a shot and try to generate a rebound where you don't know where it's always going. And it can look difficult sometimes. Whereas this one is just let guys play. And you'll see those broken plays present themselves naturally. Yeah. And with Queen Hughes, it's easier because he's such a special talent that he can kind of guys like, you know, let's pull up. He can audible, right? He can essentially say, I'm going to freestyle here. And it's a lot easier to work off of him because he puts the opposition. He attacks their pressure points. And that opens up the ice for everybody else. But, you know, I think there's also an element of Connor Garland on that play, just being ready for that. And with Connor, one of the areas that I've really liked. And I think in the third period, there's one shift, where he was relentless. He was getting involved. He's trying to will his line mates and his team to do something. And remember we were talking about that five-minute mark where it felt like maybe the Canucks might be hitting the wall in the five-six-minute range. It's actually that line that has a shift. And Garland creates some zone time and just continues the battle that takes a little bit of pressure off the Vancouver Canucks. So, you know, being ready for that moment, that's a skill as well, where you're playing off of what Quinn Hughes is doing. You understand where you need to go. And he times that perfectly. If you look at that shot, there's one thing. But the placement of the shot, Connor Rangram is actually not that far away from making that save. But the placement is right underneath the bar. That's not an easy shot for a lot of guys in the league, even the best league in the world. So you're right, broken plays, whether it's on the power play, or just being comfortable, both being uncomfortable. And, you know, Quinn Hughes takes all the attention to himself and all these guys are just waiting for that moment of, all right, he's going to do something and you got to be ready. I love the way Connor Garland reacted to that as well. - Oh yeah, and Jay mentions on the dump bar number text and barks. Garland knew he needed to have a bigger impact on the game than Dylan Gunther did. Yeah, that's a good point. And, you know, a lot's been made about the trade. And Dylan Gunther was the pick, the player Arizona picked with the selection, the connect sent to them for Albrecht Malarsson and Connor Garland. He got the tying goal for Arizona in the third period and then Garland gets the game winner. So he gets the last laugh at the former Arizona coyote, number eight for the connects, Connor Garland. Before we let you go, I didn't want to get your thoughts too on a fight that happened in this game. Elias Patterson gets absolutely blown up at the blue line after, you know, Garland had a great, great game, gets the game winning goal. A bit of a hospital pass to Elias Patterson. I know people were mentioning during the intermission that Patterson had his head down. If you watch that play, that puck goes to Patterson right away and the only, there was only two things Patterson can do. One is either skate forward with the puck and try to get the zone entry. He gets blown up or stop and have the play go off side to avoid getting hit, but he takes the hit obviously. The puck goes the other way. JT Miller stands up and fights McBane through the hit on Elias Patterson. I thought JT showed good restraint not jumping him, kind of waiting for him to circle around, squares up, both guys dropped the gloves, no in-scared penalty. But what did you think of JT Miller standing up at defending Elias Patterson? - Yeah, I love that because in that room, you see a player like McBane who's, you know, six foot three, he's 200 plus pounds and he leans into one of your star players and hey, it's a fine hit. There's nothing wrong with the hit. I actually, I really, I thought that was a solid one, but you'd like that from a teammate perspective and just say, "Hey, I'm gonna do this A, "I'm gonna take on this guy, but I'm gonna do it smartly. "I'm not gonna cost my team the Canucks "around the power play." And they come out of that, still on the power play. So, you know, with JT, this is a guy that's their emotional leader. He's a player that's gonna, you know, fire them up. He's gonna tell them how it is. That's in the room, that's on the ice. He directs traffic, but in that moment, I like that to say, all right, that's my guy. There's nothing wrong with that hit, but I'm gonna send you a message to say, "You can't do that with my guys, or at the very least." If you do, I'm gonna answer the call. So, with JT Miller, you know, there's very few things that he's done wrong this year. I think with, you know, picking up another point, throwing hits, playing a fair bit of minutes, but I love that because it gets these guys feeling like, all right, you know, this guy has my back, I have the air back, heading into the playoffs. That mentality is really important, guys, because there's gonna be moments in the playoffs where maybe it's not necessarily a fight, but you gotta respond to a big hit. You gotta respond to, you know, wall battles. You gotta respond like the way Tyler Myers did. McBain targeted him later on in the game, and what does Tyler Myers do? He basically stands him up and drops McBain. I like the fact that this team is saying, we're not gonna shy away from the contact. We're gonna get our licks in too. And if you line up one of our guys, you're gonna have to pay for it one way or another. - We'd love to get both of your thoughts on this, 'cause I just got a text here. Someone texted it and unsigned. She loves on Saturday night, right? Is it to Smith back in or is it she loves in a important game? - I'd go back to Smith. I understand the last game wasn't the greatest, but come on, guys, Vegas against Vancouver. Vancouver as a team wasn't the greatest either. I love she loves in this game. He was confident, he was good. But to me, I think with Casey to Smith, his larger sample size this season has shown that if you give him good defense in front of you, more often than not, he's gonna provide. So, sat over to you, but I'm going back with this, Smith. - All right, you know what, Randy? I'll let you go, because you don't need to listen to me give an answer when you can listen to me getting ready to be head home. - Well, I'll be listening, don't you worry about it. - Yeah, I know you will, buddy. And we appreciate it as always. Great stuff calling the game alongside Brenna Baszler tonight. - I'll always be listening to their boy, Cole Criderman, all right? - I love it. - Nice. - I love our listeners, especially Cole Criderman. - I love it so much. Fantastic stuff has always been. You got it. That is Randy Janda calling the game two-one Canucks victory in Arizona against the coyotes, second game, up a three game or road trip. And overall, to the point of your question, so I think if you're looking at it as, is this Smith going to be the backup in the playoffs? - Yeah. - If you need somebody to play in the playoffs, it's going to be the Smith. Who's more important for you to have ready for the playoffs? - Define if you need somebody. Like say, Demko has a bad game, or like Demko gets hurt. - I would maybe, 'cause okay. - There's no way, big. There's no way. - Hang on. - Okay, you would do it. You're telling me that this coaching staff, let's say Demko gets hurt in game one of the playoffs. - Okay, but this is everything I would want to do versus what I want to see versus what I think will happen. - Okay, sure. But sure, you may want to go with Shilov's in the playoffs, but there's no way Arthur Shilov's, if Demko is not ready to go in the playoffs, gets game one. It's just no way he's getting game one. Or game two, even if Demko plays game one and gets hurt. - Oh, I'm assuming Demko's back. And the way you phrased that I thought. - Oh, no, no. - You were saying if there's another injury to Demko. - Oh, okay, different story. I'm saying if Demko gets hurt in the playoffs. - Yeah. - This mitt's getting the start, the next game. It's not gonna be Shilov's. So who's more important for you to have ready for the playoffs? - I agree. I like Shilov's recently better too. But from the coaching staff and how they're gonna handle things, there's no way big. They're going with Shilov's in the playoffs if Demko gets hurt in game one. There's no way that's happening. - We all know how this plays out. The first game would be for Casey to Smith. I would approach it as who gives you the best chance to win the Stanley Cup? - Well, honestly, neither. - Like if you go into Shilov's decision doesn't matter. - But you have to make a decision as well. You get to say, well, now the guys win it. We'll play with six skaters tonight. - No, I'm probably saying to Smith, honestly. Shilov's was fantastic today. But like, I think this is seventh game in the National Hockey League. Seven games, like this guy's gonna play like. - I'm with you. - Like, remember Spencer Martin's first five games? - I totally get it. - That's what I'm saying. - I've also seen like, again, we're talking about trying to win the Stanley Cup. We're not just trying to survive the next game. I've seen 162 games with Casey to Smith. - Yeah. - I haven't seen a hundred to do, but I've seen enough of Casey to Smith to say like, I don't think this guy's gonna get you to the Stanley Cup. I would take the unknown in that scenario 'cause the upside of the other guy isn't that high. I just think we gotta be careful with Shilov's too. - No, no, we're talking about bad options here, right? Both are bad options. They're not ideal outcomes. - To me, if you're in that scenario, I was saying like, dude, you've taken Latvia to a bronze medal in a world championship. It's not the same, but I'd rather rely on that, that environment of playing against Team USA and getting a bronze medal. You've got some pedigree of doing some pretty amazing things. - That sounds like, honestly, it sounds like a lot of hope. It's a whole play. - You're on your third or second string goalie in the playoffs. You need a little bit of hope. I'll take the one with the most upside in that scenario. - I don't go do that at all, man. I think it sounds good, but it's not practical. - None of it is ideal, but we're trying to make the best of a bad situation. - Yeah. - And the best one to me would be Shilov's in that scenario. - I would start Shilov's on Saturday, 'cause of how he's played. But if you're looking at it, who's gonna be the backup in the playoffs is going to be Casey this myth? Who are they gonna have to rely on in the playoffs at some point? If Demko can't go, it's going to be Casey this myth. So the guy that they need to have ready for the playoffs is gonna have to be Casey this myth. Like, that's just the right way it is. - This strikes me as like the tie conchlin, you see marking in scenario back in the day. - Yeah, conchlin was a, he was a third string goal. You know, marking in was a third string goal. - I forget what. - No, conchlin's the one that screwed up. - Yeah, when he was a backup, 'cause roles and got hurt. - Yeah, and then marking in came in. - Yeah, he was a third string goal. - 'Cause conchlin screwed up. - Yeah, he screwed up. - I'm saying to Smith is the conchlin in this scenario. - Yeah, but marketing didn't help. I guess what happened with Edmonton, they lost the cuff. - Yeah, but who gave them a better chance? One guy cost them literally one game. - Man, who cost them one game? - Conchlin in the static final. - I mean, how many games did Smith cost them? - No, we're talking about scenarios in the playoffs here. - I know, but I'm just saying, if the Smith has like cost them a bunch of games, like I'd, you know, I'd agree. All right, we'll take some more of your text messages. - But the margins are so fine here. I love when we're talking about hypotheticals that are not even just like, hey, what happens if they get to the playoffs or if Demko gets hurt in the playoffs. - We're fighting to Smith's She Loves Wars, like completely hypothetical, but what could happen in the playoffs? All right, keep your thoughts coming into our text in the box, 1986, Sat doesn't start Patrick Raw. No, it's different. - Ooh. - It's totally different. It's not the same. - Keep sending in the backup goalie text here. - Patrick Raw, you comparing barter's She Loves to Patrick Raw, like give your head a shake. All right, Gary thought, you're like relax, Matt. - Preparing a key to Smith, too. - All right, I compared like Ty Conchlin. I didn't compare him, you know, him to Patrick Raw. All right, keep your thoughts coming into our text and the boss will take some more. Let's take a phone call or two here before we hit the break. 604-280-0650, you're toll free, one triple eight, two, seven, five, zero, six, 50. Let's go to Courtney, where we have Wayne on the line. Wayne, thanks for calling in. What do you have for us tonight? - Well, it's been a while. Mr. Satyar Shah, I'd like to come into defense of Mr. Quinn Hughes. - Okay. - In reference to your second intermission comments, you and Bick Nazar. By the man of your stature and expertise and experience working alongside Ironman, McIntyre, Mr. Scruff face, Murph, you might want to have your eyes checked or your notes refreshed and look back on your notes. As far as I'm concerned, last I looked, Quinn Hughes was number 43, not number three. - No, Conch's defenseman, Wayne. Amongst-- - Yeah, Conch's defenseman. You said he was number three. - No, number two. - In your intermission comments, he's number 43, not three. - Are you in Jersey number? No, I think Satyar-- - No, no, no, no, no. - No, no, no, no, no, Wayne. - We were talking about career points for the defenseman, Conch's defenseman. He's number, obviously, I know he's number 43. I mean, he's been playing here for seven years. I'm talking about, he's second and scoring behind Matias Olden all time for Conch's defenseman. - Fair enough, I apologize. - All good, all good, all good. - Man, we got like four full name treatments there. - I don't know, I was sweating, man. - I was like, what happened? I felt like I was back in high school, getting in trouble again. Anything else for us tonight, Wayne? You lost, Wayne? All right, we lost, Wayne. All right, we'll continue on this. Let's take one more phone call, 604-280, 0650. Let's go to POCO, where we have Holden on the line. Holden, thanks for calling in, buddy. What do you have for us tonight? - I don't know, that was a long way of saying that you were on. (laughing) I'm losing my mind on that line, 'cause I think the answer is so obvious, 'cause with no Demco, you're obviously gonna lose anyway. - Yeah. - 75% of the defense right there, but you give the keys then to dismiss. If you don't like how he's playing, I think he's coming in in relief. And then you have sea lions with a black ace assuming Abby is kicked out. But like, oh my God, Quinn, he's like, what can you say about him? Hasn't been said about Bobby or at this point. Like getting the keys to the city, DFI, I don't know. But yeah, he makes this look back to Mikayev after he goes offside, because Mikayev follows the puck. And he could've had a break right over the box there. And he gives this look back, I don't know if I'm reading too much into it, but it's like, oh, Mikayev, that's not an NHL play right there, man. Like I'm sorry, but like, that's all I got for you guys tonight. I'm gonna hang out, listen, love the show. - Hey, thanks for the phone call holding. - So a lot of tech's coming in about Mikayev today. What's interesting is after 40 minutes, a lot of people love Mikayev's effort. - Yeah. - And then you bobble the puck on an empty net and everyone just techs it and say, what a mistake signing a Mikayev was, Patterson's not confident, because he passed up a shot on the empty net. He made a pass to an open guy to go score an empty net goal, who could probably use a goal too. We tend to call that unselfish, passing a puck up on an empty net. Mikayev boggles it. I said too, that's like an all-time bad bobble by Mikayev in that moment. Blame it on the mullet arena ice. - Yeah, I don't know. Well, you can blame mullet arena for a lot of different things. I'm not sure you can blame some of the stuff with the effort it connects. - So some thoughts coming in on Mikayev as well, but we'll get some of the Patterson stuff as well. So this one, whoever you are who took PD's Mojo away, give it back now enough is enough. - Yeah, let's see if we can get it back. All right, keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar Lumber tax them box, 656.50. And people are into this Smith, she loves conversation. A lot of people are backing up, big. - I thought it was obvious. - People just love the shiny new toys they don't know enough about. Just, people just project. - It's about upside. - You know, it's like Lakerra Mackie, people are like, bring Lakerra Mackie up to the Canucks just 'cause he's had like two games. Like everyone needs to relax. - Yeah, that's a bit odd. - Like Spencer Martin had like five good games. Like this guy, he's gonna be the backup for it. And it's like, whatever. - Well, the defense completely disintegrated in front of him. - And what Spencer Martin doing right now? - What, how is that relevant? - I'm saying he had a great five or six games. He did. Remember his first five or six games? Like this guy's fantastic. And then it's time goes on. It's like, oh well, maybe he's not as good as we thought he was. I'm like, extrapolating five or six games. - Can you see this man's played in the environment Spencer Martin did last year? - Nobody would be making the case for him right now. - What's she loves? - I don't know if it matters. My point is I think we're overrading she loves based on six games to be like, oh, he's going to be like, you feel better about him in the playoffs. - I don't know. - I think he gives you more of a sense of chance with she loves in net to win the Stanley Cup than Casey does in it. - Hoping a prayer. I don't buy it. Keep your thoughts coming into our text in the inbox. 65650, you can grab a phone line. 604280, 0650 or toll free. One triple eight, two seven five, zero 650. And one of the few hiding your chances of the Canucks have given up tonight. - Canucks win 2-1 over the Arizona Coyotes and this is the Canucks Central Post game show presented by the number five orange on the home of your Canucks. Trust in the Ian Clark, Ian Clark Pipeline, asked Team USA if Sealov's is legit. He beat the Smith is laughing in front of him. Vic wins, I settled it. I'm not disputing that Sealov's has more potential. All I'm saying is the guy's played like, what, seven NHL games? Having success in the playoffs with almost no NHL experience is very, very difficult. There are a few instances where it's happened, but there's reason we keep citing the few 'cause it almost never happens. All I'm saying is expecting so much of young guys with a little experience is something that happens so much in this market all the time. As soon as Baines had won a good game, why don't they move them up the lineup? Put Coles and had two good games. Should be on power play one. It's like, hasn't scored a goal yet. That's what I'm saying. Just 'cause the guy has a couple of good games when we haven't seen a big track record, doesn't necessarily mean success is guaranteed or he's the better option. That's all I'm saying. I can't believe we're doing this. And that's what I'm saying. But I just think the logic and the playoffs is completely different. It's, you have to make decisions that help you get to the Stanley Cup. Yeah, I know. But to me, it's like, well, Casey, this is not gonna win a Stanley Cup. But my point is what team has the primary goal lead? What team, if Demko gets hurt in the first game, is skipping their backup to go to the third string guy? It doesn't happen. Like even in Vancouver, when it's what Alex said, they go to the backup and then they go to all. Like, they don't go straight to the third string guy. That's what I'm saying. He's gonna be your backup to Smith and the playoffs. They need him to be ready for the playoffs 'cause they're not gonna go to sea logs, sea logs, if Demko gets hurt in game one. That's all I'm saying. I agree, well, that's what will happen. But what should happen is, if Demko's actually out, who's the guy that gives you the best chance to win the Stanley Cup? This is like that scene in Argo where they're like, you don't have any better ideas or better bad ideas than this. You're like, this is the best bad idea we have. I think it's, I don't know. It's a hypothetical we have to keep fighting about, but that's where it's at. - Oh, I do want to read this one, 650, 650. This one, Josh and Calgary. No way you pick sea logs over to Smith. Casey is healthy, you got to play. I mean, not in your third string goalie unless you play your third string goalie. It's like, well, sure. But I also, who's the guy you're riding with next year too? Give that guy the run. I don't care about hurting the feelings of Casey's with that scenario. - I don't care about hurting the feelings either. I just think, logically speaking, they're not gonna usurp the Smith with sea log. That's all I'm saying. That's not going to happen. - All right, not unless the Smith plays a game and then plays horribly and then maybe she loves gets in. All right, keep the thoughts coming into our Dunbar Lumber text inbox. Han says, "I still remember Gold Open." - Remember Gold Open? - People had high hopes for Gold Open. It didn't quite work out. All right, keep your thoughts coming in. We'll get to more of those. Let's take a couple of phone calls here. Let's go to Delta where we have Sally on the line. Sally, thanks for calling in. What are your thoughts tonight? - Well, actually, one, sorry, I just trying to get this. - Give me a chance, you'll turn the TV off. Well, one is regarding, I'm not too impressed with Pedersen. I think with the amount of money that he got, I don't feel that he really deserved that amount, is one thing. I think the other thing, I think Quinn Hughes is a fabulous defenseman, but I don't feel he's a captain. I think it should have been Miller. That should be captain. I don't know, there's something going on with the team right now. They don't seem to be connecting. There's something going on because they're not playing like how they could be playing. Also, I believe, I think they will be playing Vegas in the playoffs. And I believe it'll only go to four or five games. I don't think they're ready yet to be Stanley Cup champions. They're too young. I think they need another year, two or three years to get that together. I just don't feel that they're ready yet. - Thanks to the phone call, Sally and Delta calling in. - A bit spicy saying, JT Miller should be the captain over. What has Hughes done to lose the captain? - Spicy. - Spicy sound. - Spicy sound. - I'll feel that, all right. You know what, we have the head coach ready, right? We'll get to more of your phone calls coming up in a few minutes. 604-280-0650, your toll free. One triple eight. - Come on, before we get to it. - 0650, and if you have a phone nine, hold onto, we'll get to you soon. What's that? - Someone just texted it. Just tuned into the show. Is Demko for sure, if not, what are you talking about? This is a hypothetical. We were talking about who's at start. Nothing's happened. Like everything's still the same for Thatcher, Demko. Do you want to clear that up? All right, now we can go. - Demko's fine. Hopefully you'll be back here soon. All right, keep your thoughts coming in, and we'll get to more of your thoughts in a dumb bar lumber text inbox as well. All right, let's get the thoughts of the connects head coach. Here's Rick Talkett after a 2-1 win over the Coyotes. - Yeah, it was good. I thought we needed to defend it really well. It was a grandi type of game, you know what I mean? Also a big gold bike Garza, and he loves this building. - He loves coming here. What about Quinn's play before leading up the goal? - Yeah, I think Huggy played really well tonight. You know, he was moving his feet all night. I mean, he controlled a lot of the play. It was an obviously great play on the Garland goal. - He talked about the need for guys to find another level. Has he found another level? First one, is he playing? - Huggy? - Yeah. - Yeah, I mean, he's trying to take some responsibility when things don't go well. And I thought he really managed the game off too. You know, he, when the play wasn't there, he moved the game along. And I thought that was, he did a really good job at that. - He was really fired up by that penalty call, were you? - Yeah, I didn't like that second one at all. I thought it was just, yeah. Gave me flashbacks of the Dallas game. Get that penalty. - This could have been a game that you could have played to lose some fast 'cause if a team saw the playoffs, but he seemed to make it hard on them. Was that kind of a starting one to see? - Yeah, I just thought we managed the puck really well. Didn't give much to the end of the day. They got some good players over there. You know, Keller, he's world-class. Most of those guys are good players. So to keep them off the sheet is tough. Those guys are good players. - Do you think of the way she loves his play? Only two games, but in cold? - Really, like, looks like a veteran in there. Very solid, looks big in the net. You know, you know, for the bench, you look at shots. He just looks big. Yeah, really, like, the poison that could-- - He talked about feeling a lot more calm this season. Do you see that in him? - Yeah, I mean, even some shots in the rebounds, he's right there, like for the, you know, he's not flipping and flopping. Like he's right there. You know, he looks like he's been watching them co-tapes. But, you know, he's there on the second, the rebound. So, yeah, it's a, obviously he's two really good games for us from us, for the Arthur. - Rick, you think the 11-7 help, but he's the defensive effort tonight. - Well, I just thought a guy like Friedman who's been working his butt off for us. I thought, you know, give us some energy. And I thought he did a nice job for us, you know. So, we tried it and I thought, I thought Fried's was really good. He was good on the bench, too. You know, you guys a lot. - That is, Canucks had coach Rick Tarkin, and he liked Friedman on the bench a lot. He only played like six minutes and 46 minutes. He played six minutes. I liked him on the bench. Yeah, he spent like 54 minutes on the bench. He had a positive attitude. 54 minutes of sitting on the bench, but I get it. You know, he's saying something positive about the guy. He's been patient to get in, played forward, played some defense. And then in end, you should have seen big fist pumping. - I don't even think we'd have a Mark Friedman reference on the show tonight. - And then in the head coach game one. - Six minutes and 46 seconds. - Did you throw your shoulder out? A fist bumping after the head coach was giving? - He likes, he likes to Smith. - Yeah, of course. - Like she loves. - Yeah. - Really looks like a veteran. - Yeah. - He looks big. - Yeah. - He likes the poise in the kid. - Play off poise. You need poise in the playoffs. I think that was a little subliminal note there from Rick Talk to maybe listening to the post game. - So you're saying that he's going to be the backup in the playoffs? - But he likes the poise in the kid. Whereas, you know, Casey the Smith, one of the things we talk about is like the rebounds. He looks really scrambling. I don't know if that's poise. - You're... (laughing) - That's poise. - He just looks frenetic at times. - I don't disagree. Like, okay, so right now for next season. She'll all should be the backup and they should not sign the Smith. I absolutely agree. - Talk to the guy now. - It's just not logical. They're not going to just be like, they're going to send to Smith down and have. She'll always be the best. That's all I'm saying. That's not going to happen. All right. - That only likes to live in a world of reality. - I like to be as realistic as possible, generally speaking. But I think for a moment, let's be serious about she loves tonight. He was outstanding in the third. He really was. And I think big picture wise, and you know, somebody texted it and said, you know, she loves could be like Satsbuddy, Alex Ald, former co-host, a co-host like Central back in the day. He came in as a third string goalie. And next thing you knew, he was the backup, became the starter, went Clutchig at her back in '05, '06 and played so well, they use them as part of the trade to get Roberta Longout of Vancouver, right? And I think the future is very bright for our other she loves. I really like everything that he's done. And I think when you project it now for the playoffs to your point, you feel good about the goal-tending. Not only the first couple. You feel like, okay, if you have to get to your third guy, there's a guy there too, that you might have a hope and a prayer with some degree, right? But for next season, the way he's looked, the way he's progressed through his time in Abbessford, like he should be the backup next year, and you should live with it. I don't think it's one of those situations where you should feel like you should pay a goal tender, like to smith or anybody else who's a veteran, a million and a half, two million. Just get this guy signed for like 8, 900 K for a couple of years, have him as your backup and let him develop. - Yeah, he made an awesome save on Kessel Ring. And I actually thought his best save was actually on the sequence that led to the Gunther goal, because there was a backside rotation there that on a dual scene pass, he read perfectly, and he got the left pad there, and the puck stayed in the zone. They eventually worked that bumper play to get it to Dylan Gunther, where it goes low, comes back to the bumper, and that guy puts it up on the far post. But that save that he made in that entire sequence was tremendous, and it gets lost in that goal. But yeah, he made some big ones, and then even on the Myers dumping, the mistake in the neutral zone, he stands tall on a player driving towards the net. He was fantastic tonight. And in the night when we're off, he's talking a lot about Quinn Hughes, because it's so obvious at times to see the skaters shine. Sealov didn't get a nomination for a star in the game, which I think is a big miss. It's Connor Garland, Ingraham, and Quinn Hughes. To me, it's, she loves to be up there, right up there with Quinn Hughes. Yeah, I mean, I thought Sealov was fantastic in this game too, and Quinn Hughes was monumental on the back end as well. A lot of reactions on the text unbox, 650, 650. The talk and call him Arthur. Talking, does pronounce the names a little bit funny. And yes, I know he did not say playoff poise, but I'm saying he said it's poised, and you need poise in the playoffs. Yeah, that's true, that's true. Raymond says having Friedman on the bench for 54 minutes and saying he was great on the bench is legit hilarious. It's great on the bench. He's great on the bench. Like what is he supposed to do? I was out of nowhere, man. Oh, that was a great comment. All right, we'll get some more of your text coming up in a few minutes. Let's take one more phone call. Let's go to Langley, where we have Ray on the line. Ray, thanks for calling in. What are your thoughts tonight? Ray. All right. Oh man, we put Ray on the line. You're there, you're there, we got you. What's happening, buddy? What are you thoughts? All right. No worries. Yeah, I just first wanted to say I love the show. You guys are really good. Thank you. I've been a PD defender for what feels like the last month, where he's been getting hate. And I don't want to pile on the hatred, but maybe the autocalls are getting to me. But today was really frustrating to watch. Seeing Patterson pass the puck in the highest slot in the second period. I know you guys mentioned it, but yeah, passing in the highest slot to Hoglander in a position that seemed a lot less threatening. What's one where I just don't really understand? I wanted to also say that Shoutout to Miller for standing up for PD, but watching anyone getting in the fights, this close to playoffs, especially when they're just star player, oh, it makes me nervous. But yeah, that's all I wanted to say. Thank you. Hey, thanks to the phone call. Appreciate your thoughts, Ray. He mentioned the chance Patterson had he didn't shoot it. Is that the one he mentioned? Yeah, we talked about that in the intermission. Yes, but it's time to spend a couple of minutes on it here. I thought Patterson created some chance again, like I thought yesterday. Again, I mentioned he needs to be better. We need to see more from Patterson. He's not a threat himself to score. He created a couple of chances of last game, didn't get rewarded for it, gets an assist tonight, created a couple of opportunities and everything. Playmaking is why he's been fine. Defensively, he's been good, but is he a threat to score? I don't know if he believes he's a threat to score because he doesn't shoot the puck enough, especially in prime scoring opportunities. That chance on that kind of rush play where he has a clear lane going down. Now, there is a defender in his vicinity that might be able to close, but he's got enough space to drive forward and shoot the puck, absolutely. And the pass he makes the hold lander makes the shot even more difficult. He didn't pass it off to a better shooting position. He should pass it off to a worse shooting angle to hold lander, a confident player shoots that puck. And they need him to be more aggressive in those situations. - The three most puzzling moments of this season of shot selection was Hronik, JT Miller, against Seattle where he had a breakaway. And Hronik, I can't remember who that game was against. If someone remembers, text in 6.50, 6.50. But it's the one where he had the puck, basically got the hashes and wound up for a slap shot. And then Patterson tonight, 'cause he's walking straight into prime scoring real estate, coming downhill. Even the other one, the other game against Anaheim, when he broke through that first line of the forwards on the PK, he still has some work to do to get to his forehand. You'd expect him to be able to do it 'cause he had space, but it's still like turn your body, get a shot off, not that I'm justifying it, but he makes a deferential play. This one, you're like, everything's set up for you. Just rip it. And he passes it over to those hold lander who's got a lot of work to do to basically get a half chance off. If you're at least Patterson, you've got to have some faith in yourself that you're going to bury that chance. Aside from that, like we talked about the empty net goal, one where he passes it up to Mikaya, like I don't have no problem with that. He made a nice backhand pass to Brock Besser who fired on the shot and it was turned away. But like there are moments where he did set some guys up, but overall is he threatening enough? - Not really. - He's not. And I think that's something that has to change. And we've had a lot of thoughts coming in to the text and unbox about come play off time. If Patterson's not going, the Canucks are in trouble. Of course. - Mm-hmm. - They absolutely are if he can't score. They need him to get going and he's got to be more aggressive to be a threat himself than just setting up his teammates. All right, keep the thoughts coming in to the text and unbox and grab a phone line as well. 604-280-0650, you're toll free. 1-888-275-0650. Satyarsha with Bignesser, Canucks win 2-1 over the coyotes. Right circle, low backhand shot kicked out by Ingram to the near corner. Herona gets it and leaves for Hughes. Under two minutes left third period, game tied at one. He was with a long wrist shot, ripped out by the everyman for Garlin, right circle, he scores. Connor Garland, Johnny on the spot on the right wing fires it. Past Connor Ingram and the Canucks go up two to one with 151 left in the third. And it's the former Coyote getting it done for the Canucks on the road. - And the revenge game is complete for Connor Garland. He scores the goal here, but Quinn Hughes doing magical things, walk in the line, creating space for himself. It's a shot off in the active bounce towards Connor Garland as Hughes lets a wrist or go, bounces off the boards. And a perfect placement of the puck by Connor Garland right after just below the bar. I wonder if this was intentional from Quinn Hughes. The way that this bounces off the boards, it's perfectly placed. Perfect execution from Connor Garland who makes it two one with 151 left in this game. - Canucks win two one, Connor Garland getting the game winning goal, Quinn Hughes two points of the night, got the first goal of the game and then gets the helper on the game winning goal as well. Canucks getting past the Arizona Coyotes. Keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar and Lumber text in the box, 650, 650. You can also grab a phone line, 604-280-0650 or toll free, 1-888-275-0650. A lot of stuff coming in on the text in the box. Darren and Vancouver says, "Please ask Ian McIntyre "to settle the Dismitz Cilav's debate." Unfortunately, that may have to wait until Saturday when the Canucks play the LA Kings. IMAX is not gonna be able to join us tonight from Arizona. Let's just say the Molot Arena is not very friendly to getting work done. So it's kind of thrown, you know, the timing off for IMAX to be able to get done writing and then also be able to get to us to do all his media stuff post games. So unfortunately, there's not enough time for him to go to join us tonight. - Those damn Arizona State University parties. Just two, people partying too hard, man. - We tried telling IMAX not to go to a party school. (laughing) - What an embarrassment of an arena. And the TV angles were so tough, too. So we have like two big screens here. We have two big screens here at the studio where we watch the game on the road. And the angle, everyone knows who was watching. It was a little bit of an angle. - People were texting about it, yeah. - Texting in about the angle. And I was getting a headache watching it on one of the TVs just because how the angle was set up. I had to watch it on the other TV specifically. - Oh, it was hurting. It was hurting to watch it on a big screen TV. - No, I'm saying the camera angle is so bad to give me a headache. - Are you okay? - Yeah, fine. - Need some talent on or anything? - No, I'm good. I'm just saying it was bad TV. - Have you seen him all? - Any ibuprofen? You're good? All right, he's good. - Seven more games, potentially only seven more games there. - No, they're not moving this year. They already came out and said it's not happening. - I mean less than that if they're just home games. - Yeah, they're not moving out of there yet. Does the WHO have better camera angles? They probably do. - Yeah, we got some texts of like barely a junior A-ring. I've been to some junior A-ring center better than that. - They may have been slightly better. Owen Burnaby says, I'm not going to argue about who's going to be the backup in the playoffs, but I have to say things look good for us as goal 10, as far as goal 10 goals. Not only do we have Demer, but she loves is looking great. Plus, to low below could even be better down the road as well. - Hang on, we weren't debating who's the backup. We were debating who, if an injury were to happen in that Demco, who gets the start. - Yeah, but it's going to be the backup. So that's why I don't understand the argument here is like, - No, you understand it. You just don't want to live in that reality. - 'Cause it's not reality. Dismiss is going to be the backup in the playoffs. If Demco gets hurt, the backup's going to play in game two. I mean, that's what's going to happen. - What if it's a game seven though? - What do you mean? - 'Cause you can't pick and choose when a, I can't believe we're still doing this. A hypothetical injury happens. - They're not going to go from the. - I mean, it's game seven. - They're not like round, whatever round. - Rick Talkett isn't going to go in game seven from Thatcher Demco to the Goldie who's the third string guy. They're going to go to the Smith. Now, we can sit here and say, I'd rather see she loves. We can talk about that. Sure. - That's what I want to hear. What would you rather do? - I would rather go with she loves on Saturday. - Oh, no, no. - I would. - No, no, not Saturday. Like if that scenario develops, what would Satyr, Shaw, the head coach do? - In the playoffs? - Yeah. - I'd probably go with the backup still. - Oh, okay. - I'd probably go with the backup because he's there being... - So boring. - To me, it's not logical. That's my biggest thing. If that's all I'm saying. If Demco gets hurt, even in game seven, the head coach is not going to go to the third string goal either, go to the backup goal. My point was I want to see she loves play on Saturday. But if they're going to go with Dem with the Smith as her backup, which they're going to go with, who do they need to have ready then? If something happens, it's going to be the Smith. So I like to see him, but I think logically, if you're trying to set things up to the playoffs and have your backup be ready and perhaps gain some confidence after a tough outing, he's going to be the guy that gets a start most likely. - All right. - That's my takeaway here. - All right. - Have we done with that combo now, please? Can we move on? - Take the oxygen out of the fire there. - Okay, good. Thank you. - All right. - This one, 650, 650. You peed into play with guys like Lindholm and Mikaya for now. If playoffs start today and all are healthy, won't get scored on at least. You can't do it or a second line if I keep in Hoaglander and Brock with them. Got to have a couple of lines going. Hoaglander, Miller, Brock, third line. That's a text coming in here, 650, 650. - Final one on the goal, the spiritual advisor. You guys are both wrong. I think Tolopulo has the most upside because he hasn't even let in a single NHL goal yet. NHL goal, yeah. - Oh, fair point. Fair point. Fair point. Fawns and Vancouver. What do you think about Rottu coming in with his big, hot streak? He's played NHL games and done well. He could be a big fourth line upgrade over the current revolving door. So the Canucks have one recall remaining. If I've done the math right, they've recalled Baines, put Colton in she loves. So they have one remaining. And most likely when Demko comes off LTIR, they're gonna be sending she loves down. So they have one recall option remaining. Considering they have eight defensement, it's not gonna be a demand they call up. Who's the guy they should be calling up? I'd say probably Rottu. - Yeah, he's the most likely candidate. And if you're looking at for the postseason, you need some options. Is that the guy you give a look to then? Has he earned a look? I'm for him getting a look. But I, again, just as I'm kind of pumping the brakes here on, you know, she loves being in the backup and the playoffs, everything. R. Steve Baines came and had a couple of good games and people thought, man, maybe he's an option for the end of the season. Maybe he can move up to your lineup. And now it's like, he needs time. And next year is gonna be maybe more realistic as far as his ETA is concerned. And I'd say the same thing for Rottu Rottu. I think it's very promising. I think it's fantastic. And I'd be all for him being the final recall, getting a couple of minutes. But in terms of him actually being an upgrade and being able to carve out a spot for himself, it may just be asking too much. And even if he has one or two good games right away, it's hard to sustain that. And we've seen that with a lot of these young guys. So I'd be careful with expecting anything from it. But it's a good question. Who's gonna be the final recall? And will it be all two Rottu? - Yeah, especially with the way he's playing right now, peeking at the right time. - I think he's got, he's got like 17 points in his last seven games or something. He's been absolutely on fire. - So non-real run right now. And another productive night for Rottu as well. And so you're starting to see a bit of a reward, 'cause I think there was some concern earlier in the year around December. So I'm like, is this guy really gonna be a regular? Well, he's gonna be sitting here with over 50 points this year in the AHL. So that's a fantastic run for Rottu this year. And yeah, did you mean this is still about next year, right? As far as the 12th forward debate right now, it's a little surprise PDG wasn't the one in the lineup tonight, but Oman, I thought, did pretty well tonight. I think the bottom six tonight, the Blueger-Mikayev group had some chances, didn't see anything from Oman to say, okay, well, this guy's gotta come out of the lineup. So another good audition for him and Sam Lafferty. I think he actually played just under 10 minutes, 951. - Well, I mean-- - For Sam Lafferty. - He didn't have a fourth line tonight. - Yeah, but you know, I think in honest, 10 minutes from Nils Oman, which featured another minute on the PK as well. - So right now, I would put Oman ahead of PDG obviously, certainly had a bane, but I still feel like the gap between Oman and Rottu is still fairly large. - Yeah, I would not disagree with that, but we'll see ultimately what happens with the recall situations as the rest of the season goes on. This one here says, PD needs to play with guys like Lindy and McKayer for the playoffs. - Right, right, right. So what I wanted to bring that up in terms of the playoffs, 'cause somebody else texted into and mentioned that they're mixing the lines up too much, James and Kuala Lumpur Beach, we've had great season at denying that, but am I wrong to be a bit nervous that we're still juggling lines? And, you know, we've seen McKay have had his issues too. I'm not sure what the proper answer is here, but did you think that Miller and, I mean, Patterson and Besser and Hoglander had a good enough game where you wanna see that continue or change that up for the game coming up against LA? - Yeah, I haven't loved the Patterson Besser connection so far. There was the one moment I mentioned where the backhand pass by Patterson to Besser. I actually thought the Besser had a pretty good game. There was some comments saying, you're like, where was Brock Besser today? You made a great back check at the end of the second period. Like that's competing to the end of the period to deny a late chance. He actually had a good play to set up a Queen Hughes rush in the neutral zone where he retained it really well, hit Queen Hughes in stride, entering the zone, and neither Oldmont or Hoglander kind of got to the middle of life. So Hughes was left with a short side shot to try to sneak it past Connor Ingram, but set up a play by Brock Besser in that moment. And there was positives to Brock's game, but the overall chemistry between him and Patterson, just doesn't look like it's there. And look, we're saying that a lot. That seemingly at times with guys with Patterson right now in these last two months. But the pairing to me still just makes more sense, Besser with Miller than it does Besser with Patterson. - I don't disagree with that. The thing is though, like who should be the third guy with Patterson because McKay has not gone, and to answer that question about how Mick is going, like he's not going well enough for you to feel like, not only should he play in the top six. - He's got the limo, okay, the next audition to me, the next real chance for someone to solve that problem, it's Lindo. - But the coach wants to have those guys play center. - I know, I know. - And so the question is, is he gonna relent from that? If he doesn't relent from it, then he's not gonna be an option. - They don't have enough resources to solve all of the problems. Either you trust Teddy Blueger to be the third line center with Joshua and Garland, or you trust Billy McKay of to play in the top six with Patterson or Miller. Those are the options. - Yeah. - And we can sit here and say, well, that's not a good enough option. And you'd be right, but they just don't have enough resources to solve all of them. Unless Vasily put Colton goes on a crazy seven game and you think, okay, this guy has to go up the line up. And he's doing well, but I'm not in a spot right now where I feel great. I'd rather just trust McKay of in that spot. - Well, when put Colton has a score to single goal, yeah. - Exactly. - He's had good moments, but he has a score to goal. - Of the candidates of someone who can surprise you to help solve the problem. He's really the only one. - Yeah, but you're not wrong. And it kind of comes back to the she-lops. And like, you're not wrong about the potential there. But it's like, you also have to do something to get there. And at least, you know, she loves how the game, but I didn't say put Colton to score a goal. If he scores a goal, then maybe you can see if he can get going. 'Cause I've seen people with text in, I call him, call on text in all the time. It says, why not put Colton in the bumper spot on the power play? And I think long term, interesting, left shot, good shot. You can put him there in the bumper spot. Maybe it's interesting, but when a guy has a score to single goal, can you consider him for that spot? And that's why Pugh sued her getting healthy scratch tonight. And the coach wasn't asked about him specifically. So it looks like it was a healthy scratch. I mean, that's a player who's played in the top six and he got healthy scratch in favor of the defenseman playing seven minutes tonight, under seven minutes. And that's a guy that come play off time. He may be playing with Sutteran with Miller and Besser. - Yeah, and I love to think that. But it's not him who you're putting there. So it's like, if you put Mikayev with Miller and Besser, then you can put Lindholm with Hoaglander and, let's say, Patterson, then you go Blueger, Joshua, and Garland on your third line. And then your fourth line is what sued her, Lafferty, and what Colton calls him? - Yeah, that to me is probably the most optimal way. And you're trusting Sutteran and Blueger in your bottom six centers, which I think you can live in that reality. But I'm not sure if I'm extremely confident of Lindholm not in the top six. It gives you an edge, I get it. But does it decrease your overall offensive output by doing that? - Yeah. - I'm not, I mean, until Patterson can score himself, 'cause Lindholm hasn't shown to be a goal scorer in threat himself either. That's the problem. - You're not wrong. - So it's like, it comes down again to Patterson, and that's why when you get to Patterson, ultimately, like it's gonna have to be him, being the player who's more dynamic and more dangerous individually. - James is texting in from Qualcomm Beach, and my point is shouldn't we know what the lines are at this point of the season, don't you guys think? - Well, I think we know the duals. - I think we know what the duals are. The coaches said, like, "We know Miller and Besser will ultimately be the dual." I think you always go back to that, you feel like that's going to be fine. And I think you put Garland and obviously Joshua together, and that's going to be fine. Whether it was with Lindholm or whether it was with Teddy Blueger. And I think we'll see that. The question just is, who's gonna be the third guy with Patterson? - To me, it's not so much about the rest of the lineup. It's really that question more than anything else, 'cause everything else I think kind of falls into place a bit better when that gets sorted out. - And your candidates probably are Suder McKay of Lindholm. - That's why ultimately I'd default to, do they get McKay of back there? But the way he's playing confidence-wise, I mean, he went from looking like he couldn't score a goal, 'cause he didn't score in what 34 games, finally gets one, and now he looks like he's never gonna score again. Empty Ned, Bobble's the puck. Like it's like he's allergic to scoring goals again. And just when you thought, "Okay, can he up his game for the playoffs and be the player you need him to be?" I think he's pretty much is what he is at this stage. You know how he's gone through these ups and downs? I don't think the consistency's all of a sudden gonna find himself. - And I thought he played good tonight. - It was fine, but that kind of finishes him there at all. And is that confidence going to come back? - 6.56.50. How can he score if he's playing with McKay of, but Colton 100% should be with Patterson and Hoglander, Kidline Unite. Patterson's still the kid? - Yeah, no, I mean, hey, they were kids, like we all have been kids at some point. Now they're becoming younger adults. All right, keep your thoughts coming into our Dumbbar Lumber text inbox. We'll take more of it on the other side. Well, here's some pros and Canucks players as well. You're listening to the Canucks Central Post game show on the official home of the Canucks. Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network. - They won that last round along the wall. They're cleared it easily down the ice. - Patterson to the Arizona line. Hammer by Jack McBane stood him up. Here come the coyotes the other way. Crouse right wing, drops into the swamp. For Mozer, got a backhand shot away, but there's a fight behind the play. The draws the whistle, J.T. Miller's standing up for Elias Patterson, dropping the mitts with Jack McBane. McBane trying to come around with the right hand. He's got it free, or Miller rather trying to protect himself, goes down to one knee as he was taking shots to the back of the head. The linesmen get in and separate. The Miller wanted to keep going, but that'll be the end of that scrap. As Elias Patterson was crunched by Jack McBane in the open ice, trying to enter the Arizona zone. - It was good anticipation by McBane who realized, "All right, Patterson's gonna try to come up the middle." And Patterson had his head up. Saw McBane coming, but at that point, you've got the puck on your stick, and you see that train coming, you gotta take that hit. J.T. Miller, as they were coming back up ice, Arizona had a great chance, but McBane and Miller got the gloves off and were ready to tussle there, and McBane's a big boy. He's not a player that is shy to drop the gloves. Good on J.T. Miller for taking that fight. - J.T. Miller sticks up for Elias Patterson, takes on Jack McBane, both get five-minute fighting majors, conducts win two-one over the Coyotes in Arizona. And this is the Connect Central Post game show presented by the number five orange on Sportsnet 650 and the Sportsnet Radio Network, Satyar Shah with Bick Nizar. We are gonna get to the text and the box coming up in a moment, 650, 650. We are gonna hear from Canucks Players Post game coming up in just a few moments as well. But let's take a phone call, 604-280-0650, you're told free, 1-888-275-0650. And let's go to Toronto, where Marcus is on the line. Marcus, thanks for hanging in there tonight, buddy. What are your thoughts tonight? - Gentlemen, thank you for putting on a great show once again. - Thank you. - Much appreciated. The thoughts are on the soloist's myth debate and they shouldn't really be a debate. To be honest, if downcoast healthy, he's our guy, 100%. I grew up watching this team. Troy Gamble, Kirk McLean, stupid debate, all the way back then. The problem with Casey this myth, if downcoast injured, it has to be archer still off. Casey this myth, in 26 decisions this year, has lost 14 games. The fact that the team has 102 points with their backup goalie losing 14 of 26 decisions is truly impressive. This myth is a great backup goalie for Demco, but if Demco gets injured, there's no question in my mind that archer still off should be in that. It's better for the future. We're not winning a cup with this myth. I don't think we're winning a cup with still off, but at least you're giving him the experience. I'll let you guys go ahead with that one. Have a great night. - Hey, thanks for the phone call. I mean, I think we've given our takes quite a bit here by Marcus. - Yeah. - Marcus Cole calls in a side with Vicki. - By the way, who says people in Toronto don't stay up to watch connect scams? Look at that, Mark is putting in work, man. - I love it. 2 a.m. in Toronto hanging in there, getting his take on on our two shoe loves and Casey this myth. Somebody texted us in and texted us and said, it's not she loves, it's sea loves. It is sea loves. It used to be sea loves, but it has since been changed to sea loves. - I think the NHL pronunciation guide is actually outdated on that one, 'cause when it first got to the leak, it was sea loves. - Yes. - But it has since changed. - Another correction, too. - Oh yeah, we screwed this one up. - All right. - Well, I screwed this one up 'cause I mentioned it. - Emergency recall or she loves. - Yeah, he's an emergency. So the connect still have two other recalls. Again, like, because of the, it's not like they can just call anybody up whenever they want, in that sense. I still think it'll be forwards. Another forward, we'll see if they use both of them, but all two raw two opens up another possibility as well. We'll see if they use it on somebody else. The biggest hurdle for the connects right now is overall cap wise. They had to put a Demko and LTIR to be able to have the cap space to recall players, like R. Steve Baines bringing him back up again. That's the biggest hurdle, so somebody would have to go down anyways. So we'll see ultimately how many of those recalls do ultimately get used, but I would imagine one more forward at some point gets an opportunity. Roshan and Burnaby Texan, it says prediction, Lindholl, Petey, and Hogan had to rip it up in the playoffs together for the connects and be immortalized as immortalized as a Swedish house mafia line. All right, Roshan and Burnaby, I like it. I like the hype. And there is a lot of, I mean, it was earlier in the Texan inbox, we got into the whole dismit and she loves to bait and things kind of got lost, but a lot of people were left unconvinced by the performance today. And it only further reinforced their take that the connects are in trouble and are going to have a lot of trouble having success in the postseason as well, and losing in the first shot. A lot of those thoughts were coming in earlier in the post-game show and we didn't really get to it, but like, what's your sentiment to that? Like I talked about it quite a bit and I understand how the game tonight went, but it comes back to the feeling a lot of people have with the Canucks current form that there's trouble ahead. - Let's talk about the West then, okay. The Kings, I know they've picked up losses against the Kings. I don't think that's a very inspiring hockey. So if you go up against the Kings, I would expect you to beat them. Yeah, it'll be like watching paint dry for potentially seven games, but my expectation is you handle the Kings. My expectation is you handle the Preds. They've cooled off suddenly all of a sudden. You should be able to handle the Preds. The two teams in the Pacific? Yeah, they're solid, okay? So those are far more coin flippy. Maybe you weight them towards the other two teams. The Jets starting to become less concerned about them? - Yeah, I mean, I'm not scared of the Winnipeg Jets. It comes down again to the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche Oilers and Knights. - Yeah, and I think the Canucks maybe are in that tier. Maybe you can graduate a couple of those teams out of there, but if you put those four teams as the premier in the West, maybe the Canucks are in their own tier right behind it and then it's the other three teams, I think. - Earlier this year, the Canucks were playing at a level similar to those teams. Like what we've kind of maintained was, this year for the most part, it was like abs at their best or probably still better, but the way Dallas has played now, and they got TANF and they've come together too, like they're as complete as any team. They've won eight in a row. They made quick work of the Oilers tonight. - The thing the Dallas Stars aren't asking themselves are questions that we were just talking about in the other side of the break of, well, which reality you wanna live with? This guy in the top six, so this guy's your third line center. The Dallas Stars aren't asking themselves that. I think that's the most complete team in the West. If I had to pick my Western Conference champion right now, that's who I would pick. And those other teams aren't really asking themselves that question. Now, Vegas, part and parcel because of all the injuries, Edmonton, at least they got a Supernova, multiple Supernovas, and they can go that way. Between that five group of five, I've maybe put the connects paired with fourth or fifth with the Oilers. - Yeah, I don't think that's unfair. And for all the talk about how a lot of people text it into and saying Edmonton's gonna catch Vancouver, but I don't know if people are watching Edmonton play, so Vancouver over the past 10 games is 5, 4, and 1. Edmonton is 5, 3, and 2. Doesn't scream a team, that's a red hound. - Make a round. - They made up-- - Made up grounds. - So with the last 10 games, for all the talk about Edmonton, Edmonton, going to catch Vancouver, they made up one point on the Canucks in the last 10 games. One point. - I'm telling you, the Oilers catching the Vancouver Connects thing, the thing was done November 6th. - I know, so I'd say I just pumped the brakes on those things, you know, others aren't convinced the Canucks are gonna be able to beat a playoff team. And it's been a while since the Canucks beat a playoff team. You have to go back on an entire month when they beat the Winnipeg Jets on home ice. And considering how Winnipeg's gone, some would say, is that even all that impressive. I mean, hey, they beat Vegas and LA right before that, you know, last month as well. But it's been over a month now, almost a month, that the Canucks haven't beat a playoff team. And they have LA coming up, they have Vegas coming up, Edmonton and Winnipeg, so still four of those games coming up. I think we feel comfortable that they can beat Arizona in Calgary. You need to win one or two of those games. Like, I'd say two, I wanna see them-- - Saturday and Monday will be fun to watch. - Yeah. - But now, I'll be at a game to LA. But if you can problem solve that one, I think they'll alleviate a lot of concerns for fans. - Yeah. LA Kings were pumped up for Saturday night hockey. Kings, LA Kings. - Yeah, it's-- LA Kings play horrible hockey. But the thing too about Vegas, they have to keep winning 'cause as bad as LA has, you know, is hockey-wise. - The aesthetically? - They have such an easy schedule. They have maybe the easiest schedule remaining of any team that's in a playoff position. They have one game against a playoff squad, and that's the Vancouver Canucks. All the other games, they have two against Anaheim. They're playing Chicago, they're playing Minnesota. They played Seattle today, beat them. Like, every other team they're playing outside of Vancouver is a non-play-off. - So they have a chance to get to about 100 points. - Yeah, they have a chance to pass Vegas. If Vegas, you know, doesn't hold on to go the way they were going. So there is still a chance that by the time we get to the playoffs, the Canucks end up playing the Vegas Golden Knights. And the way the Canucks are going and the way Dallas has been going, Dallas is three points up on Vancouver. So the Canucks right now look most likely destined to have the second seat in the West and be atop the Pacific Division. So it looks like they're going to play one of Vegas or LA, I'd say. 'Cause I'd say with the schedule remaining and the pred schedule, the preds are most likely to finish eighth or be the wildcard two team. - 650, 650, wow, babe. Way to go out on a limb to pick the Dallas stars. They're on a game heater on top of the conference. I've been talking about the Dallas stars for about three, four years. Before it was cool. I had their album before it was cool. Big fan of Rupe Hintz and Jason Robertson. The stars, man, they're loaded. They go get to Chris Tannoff. They were a loaded team. Looks like Eddie was going to say something. You got something, Eddie? - No, I was just going to make a snarky remarks saying, "You've been all Dallas stars this McDonald plate for them." - Jersey billowing in the wind, which I'm so glad they got that right on the statue. - They docked out of the park on that statue. - Yeah, when I think of the word billowing, I think of Mike Medano every single time. - I like the East and Glove detail on the statue. That's just-- - That's just traction. - Just tremendous work by the sculptor. - Is that what you call the people who put together statues? - Sculptors, yeah. I wouldn't share with her, is it? - That's true. Now, statues. - Now, we'll get to play off predictions close enough when we get to close enough to the playoffs here. So before the season began, I had the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas stars meeting in the conference final with Edmonton going to the cup final and losing to New York Rangers. Is Dallas the team we feel like is most likely to get to the cup final in the West right now? Or is it Colorado still? Or Vegas even? I mean, the West is an absolute gauntlet. - I think I'm taking other stars. - Yeah, I think I may lean towards the stars as well. They don't have any holes in their roster. - And they're getting timely performances from young players. Like here comes Wyatt Johnson, 30 goalscore. - Okay. - Third line. - Genuine question, I mean, people can text in their thoughts on this. There was a sentiment that the connects were peaking at the wrong time. What's peaking at the right time? Is Dallas on this A-game heater before the playoffs? Is that peaking at the right time? Or are they on the hot streak that they will pull off? If you can have a hot streak in the last 20 games, that actually is the right time to start peaking. Whereas like Nashville maybe did it too early. Dallas, if you're doing it in this last 20 games, I was talking about the-- - The Dallas is peaking at the perfect time and you have like six games remaining. What if they lose like four out of-- - Don't care. - Don't it doesn't matter 'cause they have this streak? - To me, it's like, so long as you get it right in the last 20 games. And I mentioned this with the Canucks. Show me seven games in these last little stretch, seven consecutive games in this last little stretch. And I'd say, okay, I can forgive a lot of things. - Well, they had a couple. You wanna see it? - You wanna see it. - Yeah, well, that's why, hey, you won this game here tonight. Be billed on this. Like we mentioned, their mulligan is done now. Like that final game that they had that they lost, for instance, that wasn't good enough. I don't think you can have another performance like the one you had yesterday against Vegas. And tonight, it was better. The third was not convincing, but they obviously win Garland's scores the game winning goal. But I wanna see them close this game out a lot, close the season out a lot better too. And to your point about peaking at the right time, so last year, the Vegas gold denights ended the season. - Five, one and three, I think. - I think, it was like a nine-game point streak. - Okay, there you go, yeah. - And there were six and three over that stretch. Yeah, there were six and three over that stretch, and the three lost were six, oh, and three. - Yeah, I just wanna see like six straight competitive games here. I can live with the loss, it's not the worst thing. But if it's competitive, and we're just talking about fine edges there in a game against the Oilers, or something like that. The Vancouver Connect should be strong all the way through to the Calgary game. Who knows what happens in the Winnipeg game, guys playing and whatnot, or players rested on the 18th? Or the game on the 18th, two by five o'clock. But nevertheless, play this strong all the way through to the Calgary game. Give me seven good games before the end of the season. That's where I'm at, 650, 650. This one, I think Colorado is the class of the West. The final four is gonna be Edmonton, Colorado, Florida, and Carolina. So shaping up to be a pretty excellent playoffs here, although the snail race in the East is becoming a bit sketchy. Philly, Washington, they both fall out. Detroit, Islanders, penguins still in the mix too. After all that, Sydney Crosby is dragging them back. - Yeah, to the point. - Well, I can't believe they're, I guess I can because it's such a snail race, to a turtle derby in the Western Eastern Conference. And I was mentioning this to reach the other day, and it looks like it was gonna be Washington and Philly getting in and same thing with, Washington and Philly getting in in Tampa, obviously. And I'm like, the way Philly's gone, do you really feel confident that they're gonna hold on to a playoff spot? And do you feel good about the Capitals who've lost three straight games and all of a sudden lost the cushion they had built up really quickly? I feel like one or two of those teams are gonna fall out. Like, I don't know what that is. - Washington to me would be the biggest candidate. - And even the Flyers. Flyers are, they're in trouble, and it's gonna be really fascinating to see what happens by the end of the season. All right, let's get to some Canucks player audio post-game here. Arthur Shilovs, a big topic of conversation. He had a debate here on the post-game show. Here he is meeting with the media after an impressive performance, helping the Canucks win 2-1. - I think there was like a lot of commitment, you know, like, a great two period slide and gave a lot to me to work on, and like, strongly finish their period, like scored a, like, last five minutes, which like, great things happen. - What has given you the confidence to play so well when you step in like this? - Just being like, like, anchor for the team, you know? They can trust me, and I want to get all of that, and so the players are more comfortable to play in front of me. - How much is the communication with Ian Clark and with Casey in some of these practices leading up helped? - I helped a lot, you know, like, a lot of like meetings, a lot of videos, and like, we worked a lot of individual and a goalie ice, so it's a great progress for me. - How confident do you feel compared to when you were in last season? What has the evolution of your own game been like? - I think it's more like, like, just being calm. Like, for me, it's like being just patient, no more in the shots, and like, waiting for those players, because like, you know, last year I got some experience knowing, like, a little annoying league, so I had to adjust myself to the players. - Who gets nice bounce back after last night? - Yeah, it's a great bounce back, you know? It was harsh night, but came back strong today and looking to finish strong. - Obviously, a much better defensive effort tonight than the last night. - Yeah, for sure. - That is Arthur Shiloff's, after an impressive performance, backstopping the Canucks to a 2-1 victory. And obviously, he had a really strong game and he gave some good praise to his players around him, but let's go. Also to some audio from another connect player, the guy who used to play for the Arizona Coyotes and got the game winning goal, Connor Garland, here he is with Kate Pederson. - Connor, it had to feel pretty good to score the game winner against your former team, but most importantly, to pick up this big win for your team. - Yeah, that's a big win for us. You know, our kill did a great job for us all night. It's tough to get that last one. But it's a tough penalty there, but I mean, it is what it is. You know, we rebounded, we played really well today and we deserved to win that game, so it's nice to come out on top. - How big is it to feel like you've stepped in the right direction when you're trying to write this, write the ship here down in the home stretch? - Yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, we had a good talk with our group after the game last night. We weren't happy with ourselves and, you know, we felt like we were gonna put a good effort for today and that's a tough team to play against. They got a lot of skill up front, a lot of guys can make plays and that's what they do. So to keep them to that shot, the shots we had on a, on a back-to-back, really good. And I think I already was, again, terrific for us. - Yeah, you mentioned that. What makes him so great, though? He's been able to step in now two wins in a row. - Yeah, always confident, kid. You know, he beat me at Worlds this year. He stood on his head and took a medal from us. So, you know, it's good to see him, you know, playing for us, playing great. He's talented. He's just gonna keep getting better. But, you know, that's a gut to get from us today. - Thanks, Connor. - Thank you. - Appreciate it. - That is Connor Garland, talks about Arter Shilovs instead of-- - Keeping praise. - He was like, it's great to have him on our side. He stole a medal from us at the World Championship. - Big game already. - Arty party. - People been saying, big game already. - The street's been saying, is that what you're saying? All right. - Streets have no name, man. - Well, I will see you at that, you know. I wouldn't be surprised if you hear that in the playoffs. - By the way, he mentioned a tough penalty at the end there, too. - Clearly not happy. - Well, I even talk had mentioned it, you know? And, you know, he said he didn't like that call. I've said to remind him of the Dallas game, too. And, you know, yesterday against Vegas, the Patrangelo high stick, which wasn't a high stick 'cause the Dorabi just snaps his head back and Kelly Sutherland gave the high stick call to the Canucks and the talk had mentioned post-game that he hopes Kelly learns from that. - I hope he learns from that for the next time about as critical as talk it's gonna get. Now, a couple of games where he's kind of throws some snide remarks at the officials. Interesting. And, Andre's texted and says, Garland has been excellent this year. Do you think that management will look to move off his $5 million salary next year, Hogeliner profile, similarly and as cheaper, does it come down to whether they believe Joshua and Garland are long-term pairing and they're gonna stay here? Well, it depends on whether they can sign Joshua to begin with. - Sure. You know, what's interesting to me is, and when we talk about guys that have changed the perception over the course of the season and everything like that, is to me now, I think I approach the Garland thing as I wanna reward rather than, "Oh, they gotta move off." So if there's a reason to do it and it makes sense, then okay, I think you can explore that. But right now, it does feel like Connor Garland's maybe lured himself off the priority list of things to solve in the off season if a scenario develops where Joshua stays. 'Cause I think the way they work together pairs so well and I don't really have a problem with those two guys together. - No, I really don't have a problem with it either, but I look at it as a big surprise hearing it for me, but I look to move off the money in the off season if possible, and then use that money to build the team the way you truly want it to be built out. 'Cause as much as I like how Garland's played, and we'll see if he continues this, and there's a world where, hey, he continues scoring, and all of a sudden he's playing with Miller, and it works with Miller, and they feel like that's going to be something. You always have to allow for that positive possibility to exist, but if you're keeping Hoaglander, making 1.1, can do something similar, you can be the guy that kind of spearheads a line too, right? So I think all those possibilities exist. A lot of reaction, thanks to everybody texting in to those wondering about Ian McIntyre. No, no, I'm back tonight. Unfortunately, couldn't meet us from Arizona, but we are hopeful to have him on from LA when the Vancouver Canucks play the Kings on Saturday. Bick, we're going to call it a night. You get home safe, and you're back on the airwaves on Friday. - Yeah, one more day off for me. - One more day off back on Friday on The People Show. - Yeah. - All right, sounds good. Thanks a fast Eddie Gregory, producing the show. I'm Sati Arshaw, back at it with Dan Riccio on Connect Central tomorrow, four to six. Thank you all for listening, participating, calling in, texting in. It's always a lot of fun. I appreciate every single one of you. We look forward to chatting with you again very soon.
