Gina Gantek and Tom Muston, in for Marty Lenz this morning on Colorado's Morning News, today's Veterans Day. A time to salute all of those who have served our country, so on this important day we figured it would be fitting to give Tom the floor to talk a little bit about military service and military family life with your brother. Little nepotism never hurt anybody, Gina. I got to tell you. Joining us now on the KOA Common Spirit Health Line is for tired, vicerable John Muston, my brother, good morning, bro. Hey, what's happening, Tom? Hey, Gina. How's it going today? Great to see you. Hey, just really quickly. I wanted to see if you could just talk a little bit about our family history and what this day means for you. Well, absolutely, so Tom and I came from a family that was steeped in military history. I mean, we can track our direct military contribution to this nation back to 1763, which is the first in more. And most recently, if you really want to call it recent, you know, we've had five consecutive generations graduate from the Naval Academy. So I was class of 1990, my father was class of 1955, my uncle was class of 1962, my grandfather was 1932, great-granddad was 1896. We had on my grandmother's side, another graduate was 1873. So it's interesting that I've always said, you know, I'm one of four, Tom's an older brother. I've got another brother and sister. You know, I said, hey, I just grew up in an environment where I saw my grandfather, my uncle, my father, and the folks that they hung around and what they talked about and what they did, and the exposure, even at a young age, just kind of helped me say, hey, I think I'd like to do that too. It's easy to say, hey, if each of those folks had worked at Goldman Sachs, you know, maybe a banker. But in my case, it was easy to see the appeal of working on something that I felt was consequential and important to the nation. So that's what kind of led me to that service and why is it important today? I mean, you know, here we are looking at the one day per year that our nation comes together to just pause and reflect and thank the veterans from all wars at any point in our country's history. I think that for supporting what makes America great. Well, Admiral Muston, it's pretty incredible that you can track a lineage of just service that far back. But with that comes its challenges too. What has been some of those when it comes to just being in a military family and giving your service back to our nation? Well, yeah, there are some things that, you know, I would say they're more like opportunities than challenges. You know, for instance, we moved about every two years and we were growing up. And that meant that, you know, by 10th grade, I'd moved 10 times and, you know, Thomas knows Ranger this too. It's tough when you're in high school and you're trying to, you know, establish a position whether that's in student government or on sports teams and you're relocating all the time. So, but none of us ever knew that there was any other way. I mean, I remember at one point, for eighth and ninth grade, I was down in Charleston, South Carolina and speaking to my best friend, I said, wait a minute, let me get this right. You live in the same house that your grandfather lived in and that your father lived in. I mean, you've never moved and he said, let me get this right. You move every two years, you got to be kidding me. So, you know, we just didn't know there was any other way and in my case, I always thought, hey, I've got a pretty special perspective because I did first grade in London. I did second grade in Athens, Greece, you know, I mentioned I'd moved 10 times. So we got to see the world in a way that you might not otherwise have the benefit of seeing. So, you know, and we're, ever looked at our wounds and thought life was hard. We just said, hey, how do you make the most of this opportunity that we've been afforded with our parents? And then at a personal level, I just recognized that we really ask a lot of our families. I mean, my wife, I'm the father of three and every time I was on the road and the last job I had before I just retired from the Navy, you know, it's on the road about 20 days a month, it really puts a lot of pressure on our family. So again, it's days like this that allow us to express our appreciation, not just for the military members, but for the families that support us well. And John, I remember dad saying that, you know, anybody can be a CEO of a company, but very few people have the honor of serving our nation. And I know that you feel the same way. I mean, talk about just what it feels like to be able to serve our country. Well, look, I mean, we wake up every day very appreciative for the things that we take for granted as Americans. And part of that is born obviously from the perspective that comes from traveling the world and seeing what it's like outside of our country. And, you know, without making a supplicable discussion, I mean, I certainly am attuned to the discussions in the media about the divisiveness and, you know, one political party versus another. And I say, you know what, the last time I checked, no one's knocking down the door to get into Iran, North Korea, Russia, or China, you know. So despite what we say amongst ourselves, this is still the shining light in the beacon on the hill that sets the example for the rest of the world. So, you know, I'm really pleased and proud to contribute to supporting what it takes me. The democracy is not easy. You know, we all need, you know, to water the tree of freedom as we say periodically. So, you know, for me, it's just one of those things that I said, hey, it's not me who, and if not now when. So I hope that all the listeners also feel some kind of contribution. It doesn't have to be in the Navy or the Army, Marine Corps, Space Force, you know, it's, there are a lot of ways to serve, and you can do that in your communities and you can do that with schools. But, you know, find a way to make the world better. That's one of the things that drives all of us in today. Well, John, we really appreciate your service and happy Veterans Day to you, my friend, and, you know, good luck with the family and everybody else. And you just retired recently. So, you know, enjoy retirement. Right on. I know I'm a month into it. Now I can focus on Navy football. There you go. Pete Army. All right. That's our real job, Muston. It's a real pleasure to be here. Thanks for allowing me to, uh, to pontificate for a minute or two. Thank you so much. We'll talk to you soon. Thanks, John.
