Never Give Up "Where Giving Up Is Not An Option"
you're listening to WBCALP 102.9 FM Boston Boston's community radio station. Hello hello you listening to never give up we're giving up is not an option I'm your host Rachelle Jones so it's good to be back in the studio and to just have a conversation around not giving up you know and we always try to focus on that bounce back ability that's just that supernatural it comes from within strength to be able to overcome situations and obstacles and it doesn't mean you don't have the feeling of wanting to give up because sometimes we just you know want to throw in the towel but I'm asking you to go pick the towel back up amen you might have thrown it but pick it back up and let's try again and so I have a very special guest on the line who's gonna help me walk through this conversation of you know I'm not giving up I was reminded of David and Goliath and you're like man what does David and Goliath have to do with not giving up but I'm gonna read the story but really I kept hearing the Lord say you know five smooth stones and I remembered that David used up well found five smooth stones when about to fight Goliath amen and he only used one to defeat the enemy amen and I'm not sure what the other stones were but it lets me know that when gods in it holly luya you're gonna be able to defeat anything any obstacle any giants that trying to come and what I reminded what I'm reminded about David is he didn't run away from the giant amen he didn't run away from the situation but he ran towards the enemy let's hear the words of the Lord I'm gonna start at first Samuel 17 31 and it says and when the words were heard which David spoke they rehearsed them before Saul and he sent for him and David said to Saul let no man's heart fail because of him thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine and Saul said to David thou are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him and thou art but a youth and he a man of war from his youth and he's like look David you're still young he said but you know this Goliath has been fighting wars for such a long time now and so you know so anyway and David said unto Saul thy servant kept his father's sheep and there came a lion and a bear and took a lamb out of the flock and so David is beginning to give his portfolio of why he felt like oh no listen I may not have found a Goliath but I have fought bears and I had to deal with a lion and he said and when I went out after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth look his sheep was in trouble he said there came a lion and a bear and took a lamb out of the flock he said and I went out after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth and when he arose against me I caught him by his beard and smote him and slew him while that's you know only gone can give you that kind of you know strength to overcome fear from a lion and a bear thy servant slew both the lion and the bear and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them seeing he have to file the armies of the living God amen and David moreover the Lord that delivered me out of the paw the lion and out of the paw of the bear he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine and Saul said unto David go and the Lord be with thee and Saul armed David with his armor listen to that and he put on put an helmet of brass upon his head also he armed him with a coat of mail and David girded his sword upon his armor and he assayed to go and he had not proved it and David said unto Saul I cannot go with these but I have not proved them and David put them off wow he's like you can't listen you can't use another man's armor to fight your battle right it's like look I I didn't defeat anything in this armor you know and so David took it off and he took his staff in his hand and he chose him five smooth stones out of the brook and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had even in a script and his sling was in his hand and he drew near to the Philistine and the Philistine came on and drew near unto David and the man that bear the shield went before him and when the Philistine looked about and saw David he disdain him well he but was but was but a youth and ruddy and of a fair continent and the Philistine said unto David am I a dog that thou come to me with staves and the Philistine cursed David by his gods and the Philistine said to David come to me and I will give thy flesh into the fouls of the air and to the beasts of the field then said David to the Philistine thou come us to me with the sword and with the spear and with the shield he said but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts the God of the armies of Israel whom thou hast defied this day will the Lord deliver thee into my hand and I will smite thee and take thy head from thee and I will give the carcass of the host of the Philistines this day and to the fouls of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel amen it gets so good but I'm going to stop right there and so a lot of lessons are in there you know and it's almost like a formula of wow and we're facing trouble and when we're facing situation or a battle amen how we attempt to handle or to solve or to begin to get strategy behind it amen we've got to be clear so here's David it's like look first of all you're underestimating me you're looking at my size you're looking at you know my outward appearance right there's a God say man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart and I think he's he understood this because when he was when they were looking for king and Samuel came to the household all of the brothers was there and and yet Saul said no is there another brother somewhere and they said yeah David's out there in the field once again being overlooked and not counted but man may overlook you but God does not amen and so God has the plan he knows your purpose he knows your skills he knows the he knows the enemy he knows how the enemy wants he said he told Peter he said Peter Satan desires to sift you like wheat he knows amen he said but I praying that your faith not fail and so I get motivated I get strengthened by David's plight to be overlooked and and and not not counted as a threat but do you not know that we are a threat because we amen have the Lord on our side the Bible says if God before you he's more than the world against you and so therefore when the Goliath in the situations in your life come what stone will you choose right and I'll David had five stones amen and so we we really don't know it didn't say you know what what what what stony was but he said look you come at me with a sword and a shield but he said but I come at you and the name of the Lord hallelujah and so we have to know that we're being backed by God we have to know that we are moving in the purpose and the plan that God has for us amen and so don't underestimate the problems that are coming in your life don't be discouraged by the situations that are coming in your life just choose a stone and I want to talk this today and hopefully I can get to the five amen and if I was just to call up the five stones that I'm choosing to talk about is peace love joy faith and then some rainy day stones amen that's that's those the that's those the stone that that the unexpected stone that you might have to to choose and so we're going to have our our gas kind of just chime in a little bit about the story of David and Goliath and our first stone that we're going to choose is peace but before we get into that stone let's hear some words from Sabine hi Sabine how you doing amen amen hallelujah I had this whole idea of you know hey taken back with the devil has stolen I have to do that maybe another day because somehow God has put this on my heart amen and so we want to talk a little bit about the stone of peace what do you think about David having to go and fight this Goliath and you know what I like is that you know the king saw tried to give him his armor and David's like no no I haven't proven that he said but this thing shot here has helped me to defeat the bear it has helped me to defeat the lion and it's going to help me defeat that Goliath amen I think I think that all is all engulfed in trust trust in the Lord and trusting that he got you he had you back that's right that's right and he wouldn't have been able to do that unless he had the strength of the Lord within him and that's just I think that's just life in general you have to trust the word of God and what he says and it can help you to power through your your struggling moment amen and if I could just remind us for a moment that you're absolutely right you can't accomplish anything right and with God unless you are trusting him and trusting the process and trusting he's not going to leave you or forsake you and that he has your back but how David developed his trust amen was when he was there with the sheep alone in the wilderness forgotten he began to sing and make melody and he built his relationship he proved the relationship he built his faith when the lion came and you know I'm pretty sure a young boy seeing a ferocious lion and taking the sheep in its mouth oh right but because of his relationship that he had built a man he was able to defeat that lion amen but you can't have trust in something that you have not had relationship with trust is built upon time it's and you know I think about these and you know I want to just liken it to speed dating but it's not even speed dating it's speed talking on the phone so what happened and so what I've heard on Facebook you know I'm not experienced it you know but on the the thing that you spend time with so if you're whispering on the phone with somebody spending all that time they getting all your secrets you're getting more and more comfortable but if we would build that same style of relationship with the Lord and not with man or with woman we would then begin to develop a security a good sense about that God look listen and so it was like his um his prerequisite is like okay look I experienced God coming through for me with the lion I've experienced God coming through with me you know with the bear I've experienced God coming through with me with the naysayers people who really didn't have my back like my family right in this particular case they didn't have a lot of regard for him they didn't include him in the dinner you know and so he already had experienced that God had already walked him through it had already built up his you know his encouraged him and so he's like hey me and God a tight I've been here singing to him worship when having time and moments with him and so um so now I have to this Goliath and he was mad because he said who are you Goliath to defy you know this uncircumcised Philistine who will defy the army of God who are you and that and that's so exciting and so out of that came this holy boldness right we can't have holy holy boldness when we we really haven't been consistent or we haven't been faithful or we haven't been it's hard to stand even though God is still standing with you it's something in our own psyche that was like well I don't deserve you know I didn't do 50 things right I'm not only did 10 things right so therefore you you lose your strength because now your second guess and God's ability to come through for you just because he sent so and therefore you're trying to build your own righteousness when he said your righteousness is a filthy rag he said but when you when you lean on Christ's righteousness when you know who you are because of Christ and not because of your deeds or what you've done then you can receive the message you know better hallelujah well let's let's we're gonna break down some of these stones this well I'm gonna say the stone of peace but with that comes a few scriptures and I want to first start with first Corinthians one three through four and we're just gonna unpack it give example situations we're not in a rush and like always when we run out of time we'll just have to carry it over to our next session but first Corinthians one three and four says and the God of all comfort who comforted us in all our tribulation oh I love it I love it that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble by the comfort where with we ourselves are comforted of God hmm so first of all God is the God of all comfort right it's like yeah and unless we go to him most other comforts you know you can go get a massage you can go sit in the salt bath or go you know they have this tank I went to it's called this pod and it's salty water and you go in this pod it's like dark they may have like a little light that looks like it was it floating tank that's what it is and so I went into that floating tank and yeah it might be peaceful to somebody but I'll tell you I didn't we you get 90 minutes and I think I spent 60 of them just in pure like huh anticipation or panic I don't know because I just then I got lost how do you get lost a little water tank like I mean my head was in one way and I thought I was gonna be goofy and instead of just relaxing I was swimming all around then I didn't know where the door was and it was completely dark but nevertheless that that didn't bring comfort you know like I thought it would bring comfort but what but while in the midst of that catastrophe as I was trying to feel and find the door it was the God of comfort who had to come in and be like just relax it's only 90 minutes and you wasted most of them just relax and as I began to relax and just began to just make melody in my heart and just begin to give God thanks all of a sudden the door unreleased you know the lights came on because it was your time was up and I was like okay I think next time I go into that experience I'm gonna do it a lot differently but but you know but I learned some things about me while in that little tank amen but the God of comfort I had to call on the God of comfort to come through and help settle me because my thoughts were racing all types of things you know and then he says that same God who comforted us in our little mishaps and situations and tribulations right now I'm going to be able and this is what this is what God is able to do he's able to take that same feeling and situation of feeling discombobulated feeling scared and fearful and now he's going to help use it for you to comfort other people yeah yeah my God yeah sometimes the secret is when I'm in a in a in a in a depressed state or discomforted state or uneasy state is to help someone else's ease and then it comes back and helps me you know so so when I'm feeling kind of like in a mood I try to bless somebody because their joy and their anticipation of the unexpectedness of the blessing it brings you joy you know and it changes your mood and your your your your atmosphere and we're at mr. changes that's who we are we are atmosphere changes so what do you think about that scripture I think it's true I think when we're able to bless others I mean I know the bible talks about it comes in tenfold and but we're not thinking about the tenfold we're just thinking about being a blessing to others you know because we've gone through things like that that's right that's right and and what I like about it is gans doesn't want you to use anybody else's experience like David trying to use somebody else's arm he wants you to use your experience he helps you to put on the armor he wants you to put on the armor he told us to put on the armor of God he told us what we need to do to combat these things do we listen we don't always listen no we don't we already coded what to do it's in the it's in the bible he told us what to do to combat these things to fight these things he told us what to do he gave us a manuscript of what to do do we use it not always but he gave it to us he gave us the plan he gave us the blueprint he gave us the book amen and what I love about the book the bible is the fact that you know we can intertwine and get scriptures that can really help us to be victorious when we needed the most so even the one that you said that you mentioned in Ephesians 6 put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the tricks of the devil you know exactly but all of the components of the armor are wrapped in you know in wrapped in God you know soaked in God the helmet of salvation I mean the enemy comes to make you well let's break it down I don't rush through them I mean when you think about the helmet of salvation it's helping us to have a security and knowing that we are saved why we are saved so the enemy of course is going to make you think every time you do something you heat up wrong he's like you're not saved you're not saved you know and and then he'll bring fear and worry and he can get in and start using these things he'll bring condemnation then there's a word for that he said there's now no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus but I want to pause a moment because there's always a pendulum and so there's there's no condemnation but there is conviction and sometimes are we saying conviction is condemnation of vice versa you know what I'm saying and so conviction comes to kind of like say wow god yeah that's me I want to stop that you know condemnation is condemning yourself and when you condemn yourself you don't you don't get out of it like you would conviction like condemnation just keeps you sinking there not condemning you but convicting you yeah sending you a signal it's it's like yeah you got to get out you can't stay there you're going to get hurt there you got to get out what you're doing is wrong it's in you know we don't we like to fix it up and dress it up and close you know it's like no that that sin is sent you know a rotten apples a rotten apple you can dip it in caramel and dip it in that candy and call it a candy apple but when you bite into it guess what it's still rotten yeah so yeah so we just have to uh you know just stick with the word but how emotions get in the way our facts you know our emotions do get in the way our emotions cloud our judgment cloud what we know about the word as well so you know the word but when you're in the emotion it clouds it you forget the word and I mean the only thing that I could think about is to keep you know you got to keep yourself in the word but when you when you're feeling and experiencing those emotions it's dismissive you don't even you can't even think about the word of God even though you want to it just escapes you it escapes your mind yes um that's why we got to get out of our head and allow the Holy Spirit to move because when I was in that little dark chamber that they call floating tank relaxation um you know as as you could begin to panic because it's like I couldn't find the door can see no light couldn't see what's going on like oh you know and you know I kept moving around and you know it wasn't fun no more after a while you know you trying to find out and so I you can continue in that state where I would have had to push the panic emergency button which I couldn't find it so in either I wasn't probably the way or you could just let yourself go crazy or you could simply say okay you hear the Holy Spirit so here's the thing we the Holy Spirit's gonna do his job and we hear him saying fear not you know perfect love casts out fear you know God will never leave you saying you know so we we hear it the Holy Spirit to given us the word calling it back you know but but we're so far gone in our thoughts and in our you know in our carnality or our flash to where we override or we let the situation override it yeah I can recognize that might be in debt yeah yeah you can rely on but we can rely on God you know and so it's how we use these emotions and how we use these things you know so I tell you it's a very interesting topic and so I'm very encouraged by David and how he powered through I mean first of all he went to originally go give food and cheese to his brothers and so they mocking them what you what you kind of make them name for yourself I could just hear them all these men who can you imagine they went to Marine training they are Marines you know and yet and here come David David just coming out of the fields you know he don't even have a sword he don't even have proper shoes you know you just skipping around you want to go fight a lion but he's calling you all out and you are allowing him to call out and you're not telling him how bad your God is and so you're focusing on the problem you're not focusing on the problem solver and we do that in our everyday life and when we focus on the problem more than the one who can solve it right and we don't train ourselves and you got to train yourself be like okay I see this happening I'm not not dealing in reality I see I have that but I also see that I need to stop spending I also see that God said that you know I'm you know giving it shall be giving good measure press down shaking together you know so there's scriptures - so there's changes I may have to make you know all those things encompassed but the overarching factor to me is the fact that he said he came he said yeah sing comes to kill steal and destroy but I am calm that you may have life and have it more abundantly oh my goodness guess what our time is up I mean it goes so quick I've enjoyed each and every one of you today so being thank you for having a conversation with us around this topic of five smooth stones and absolutely absolutely we're gonna have to have you come back I want to thank those who are listening thank you for listening coming on every Sunday at 7 30 thank you so much
