It's Veterans Day honoring all military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. It's a federal holiday coinciding with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which marks World War I. These observances reflect the end of significant hostilities at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice of Germany took effect. Initially, the United States observed Armistice Day, it evolved into Veterans Day in 1954. Thank you, veterans. Their courage writes the stories of liberty. "My country is of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I see, land where my father's died, land of the beautiful spot, from every mountain side, every hungry. My native country is the land of the long of free, my name I know. I know thy rose and rims, thy woods and temple hills, my heart with rapture thrills, like that of all." Let music swell the breeze and ring from all the trees, sweet freedom. Singing and song, let mortal tongues away, let all that grief or tape, let from their silence pray, the sound of dawn. Our father's gone to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing. Long may our life be bright, with freedom's holy light, roger does my light, great God our King." It sounds like something to celebrate to me. Welcome to November 11th of the National Day calendar, where a controversial ice cream law created America's favorite dessert, and how an arm is designed in a railway car changed history. Do you love to start the day with a smile? During the celebration nation, by picking up your very own National Day calendar, visit our website, nationaldaycalendar.com, for our full-color printed guide to all the fun and unusual ways to celebrate every day. Religious leaders made it illegal to serve ice cream sodas on Sunday. One creative drugist found a clever work route, serving the ice cream with syrup but no soda. E.C. Burners, whose Sunday ice cream special, became the Sunday we know today. On this National Sunday Day, we celebrate how one man's solution to a peculiar law sweetened American history. There's an interesting story about the Sunday beyond this sort of workaround. My understanding is that it was a girl who wanted it, but it wasn't Sunday, and they said, "Oh, we only serve those on Sunday," says, "Well, it must be Sunday because that's what I want." I like that girl, that's buddy. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, a remarkable document was signed in a railway car in France. That historic moment ended World War I and became the first armistice day. Now known as Veterans Day, we honor all those who have served, remembering how a single moment in a humble railway car began our annual tradition of thanking those who sacrificed so much for our freedom. So what are you doing today to celebrate Veterans Day? I think I'll give my dad a call, I mean my uncle, they both served and I thank them for just all the freedoms and the opportunities that their service gave me. I love that. That's awesome. I'm actually going to go volunteer at a Veterans Shelter. That sounds like a great idea. Yeah. I'm Latoya Johnson. I'm Chris Vandenventor.
