Lions fans, it's time for the podcast you've been waiting for, the show where Kool-Aid runs blue, faces turn red, and rose-colored glasses never go out of style. Welcome fellow Lions fans, I was gonna start this off by making fun of how many horseshoes the Chiefs had shoved up their ass after Denver somehow got a 35 yard field goal blocked. But the Lions must also be shitting horseshoe shaped bricks overcoming five interceptions to win. I'm not talking about the kind of bricks that Jake Bates used to sell, I'm not talking about the kind of shit that tastes like James Houston's Gatorade, talking about magical leprechaun crafted unicorn horseshoes that are gonna carry us to the Super Bowl. I'm Jimmy Liao, University of Michigan Medical School grad, board certified in family medicine, this is the Detroit Lions podcast medical edition. Today is November the 14th Thursday. Let me start off by talking about my thoughts from Houston I just got back from there. Impressive skyline that Houston has, it's the fifth biggest metro area in the country, the four others are New York, L.A., Chicago, and Dallas Fort Worth. Dallas Fort Worth is sort of cheating, those are two separate cities pretty far apart. So I would say Houston is probably the fourth biggest metro area and the skyline look like it. Very impressive, very large city. The space center NASA museum was disappointing though, that was gonna be the highlight of the trip. It's actually a pretty small museum, hardly any interactive exhibits, not much fun for kids, not really too interesting for adults either. The astronaut training tour was not particularly interesting, they take a tram, take you over to this warehouse where you're at the second level behind glass looking down on a bunch of space equipment, probably can see more on a YouTube video, really one of the more underwhelming museums I've been to. The other museums in Houston were very good, the Children's Museum was excellent, the Health Museum was very good, the Houston Zoo was very nice, there's this place called the Interactive Aquarium and Adventures where you get to see and pet a lot of animals, it's a bit expensive but you have the opportunity to pet many different kind of animals, we pet the sloths, lemurs, a capybara, porcupine and eater. The highlight for me was the porcupine, who knew that a porcupine could be so cute and friendly? I get to pet the quills, super friendly, really all the animals were as friendly as dogs, really unique experience, expensive but worth it if you're interested in that kind of thing or have kids who might want to actually touch animals. Also, I went to the Botanic Gardens which was very nice, walked around Rice University, the Owls, that's pretty close to the Houston Texan Stadium, so that was a nice place to go walk. There are a lot of nice walking areas around Houston, the Buffalo Bayou Park was nice, Houston Arboretum and the entire museum district was very impressive, lots of great places to walk around there. I went to the Buffalo Bayou Park sister which is an underground reservoir of water that's not used anymore, it's a unique place, they put an art installation there with some music but unfortunately the art installation was really not that good, who ended up being sort of boring. But very unique place to go visit, also drove to the Kima Boardwalk which is in the amusement park, sort of like the Santa Monica Pier type thing, fun for the kids, who's a good place to walk around. The weather was great, the first day was humid, too humid for me but the rest of the trip, humidity dropped, temperatures dropped and it was very comfortable throughout. Now let's talk about food, thanks to @SiberianSneaks @JPointes and Jeff Risen for food recommendations during my Houston trip. As a person who loves to smoke meat, I smoke brisket, pastrami which is basically just marinated brisket for a week or two. Bacon, I smoke my own pork belly that I get from Costco and slice it up into bacon, I do pork ribs, pulled pork salmon, when I do a turkey for Thanksgiving, I love smoking all day while watching football so I was very interested in the smoked barbecue scene in Texas. I went to three places, Killens, Truth and Pitroom, Killens had a great bark, very well developed, very crusty, excellent bark there, Truth had the most tender brisket, Pitroom had the most flavorful brisket, it tasted similar to my pastrami that I marinate, so all three have their own different aspects to it, I prefer Killens and Pitroom the most, all the briskets were good though and noticeably better than almost all the places in Kansas City which I went to last year. In Kansas City though does have brisket burned ends which I didn't see at any place in Houston, pretty interesting to me that something that's as popular as brisket burned ends in Kansas City has not made its way to Texas and they don't even offer it. I also went to a couple of Tex-Mex places, Original Nymphas and Paparacitos, the fajitas were great, unfortunately the service wasn't that good, at Nymphas one of my pet peeves is when the waiter asks you if you want something but doesn't tell you that it's going to be an extra charge, so some I ended up paying an extra seven bucks for salsa and extra for a little bit of shredded cheese, if you're going to ask me if I want something, I think you should tell me if it's going to cost me money. At Paparacitos, the food was good but the tortillas weren't brought out till five minutes after they brought out the fajitas so all the food got cold while I was waiting for the tortillas, come on, you gotta bring out the tortillas with the food. Let's get to the game thoughts now, the stadium looks great from the outside, I like the design more of a rectangular design as opposed to the traditional oval dome shaped stadiums, more of a modern type design, I like it. The lines helmets look much shinier and sparklier in person than they do on TV where they look sort of dull and matte and gray, much nicer in person, the Texans battle red helmets look great, mirrored red chrome, loved it. My question was what happened to the NFL color rush, I really missed those days, that went away a few years ago, really enjoyed the color rush era, this wouldn't have been a perfect game for it with the Texans battle red and the Lions, full Honolulu blue and their blue chrome helmets that they introduced this year, maybe some colorblind people had an issue with the color rush games, but this game would have been perfect for that. The retractable roof at the stadium was very cool, it opens quite wide so you do get the feel of an open stadium, although it's not quite an open stadium, you still have four walls and you do have a lid covering most of the outside of it. So certainly not as open as a permanently open stadium, but it's nice to see the sky, feel the fresh air, I got to see the fireworks, it's only the second time the Texans stadium has been opened since 2021. And it was a good thing that there was no wind in the weather for those Jake Bates kicks, the weather was very temper, very cool, very nice weather, great that there was no wind because any amount of wind could have caused one of those Jake Bates kicks to hit the upright. At the game for I was sitting, I had a terrible angle for both of those kicks, I thought they had gone straight down the middle, I wasn't stressed at all unlike you guys were watching it on TV. The offensive line looked pretty rough throughout the game, golf looked like he was under pressure all game, not comfortable at all, the running game also looked like it was getting stuffed a lot with one or two free rushes coming in all the time, hard to blame the interceptions on golf with how much pressure he was in. I think he actually only threw three interceptions because one was a strip sack fumble that they counted as an INT and one was a Hail Mary, which really shouldn't count as an interception. The game reminded me of Ty Demmer's seven interception game, so I went back and looked up that game. That was in September the 23rd, 2001, finals go over was Cleveland Browns 24 Alliance 14. The leading receiver that he was Johnny Morton, six receptions 100 yards. The second leading receiver was Corey Schlesinger with 37 yards, Jermaine Crowell was third with 34 yards. I still remember having high hopes for Jermaine Crowell and Charlie Batch leading us to big things. Fortunately, that didn't happen. Our leading rusher of that game was James Stewart, 71 yards. Remember he was the guy that the Lions got to replace Barry Sanders. Young defense leading tackler with Sean Rogers, who also had Steven Boyd, Robert Horschay, was still playing at that time. Todd Light, Tracy Scroggins, Ron Rice, Luther Ellis, whose song is now playing the NFL. Alan Aldridge, couple first rounders, Chris Claiborne and Terry Fair, neither of those guys really panned out for us, brings back memories looking at the box score of that game. For the Houston Texans game, I was sitting about the 10-yard line, didn't have a great view of the bench, so I really didn't see a whole lot back there. Unfortunately, I was not on the side of the blue tent. I was actually on the side of where the special teamers were practicing and warming up, cleaning Jack Fox, Hogan Hatton and Michael Nice were practicing their snaps the entire game. Most of the time they were just milling around and staying warm. If you are a huge special teams fan, this would have been a perfect seat for you. Let me get to the game injuries. One thing I saw at the game that did not show up on TV was Graham Glask on the very first drive landed on his head and got up shaking his head, which was worrisome for a concussion. A lot of guys who have concussions will get up, shaking their heads, or grabbing at their face mats. This was not shown on TV. Fortunately, it looked like he was fine the rest of the game and there has been no concussion diagnosis since. On TV review, I saw Carlton Davis in the third quarter got need hard in the back of the right lower leg, he limped off the field, likely a confusion as he did return to play. That impact to that area can be very dangerous, though. We saw this with Aiden Hutchinson's TIB fib. Fortunately, Davis did not have any serious injury there, but it could have been a lot worse. Ali McNeil appeared to be having right TMJ symptoms, that's the temporal mandibular joint in the third quarter. I reviewed the video of the play as well as the entire previous plays of the drive as well as the previous drive, didn't see any trauma to his jaw area, didn't see any hard hits, hard to save what caused that TMJ symptoms, possibly he just bit down really hard and injured that joint, which can cause a TMJ issue. He was able to return to the game and should be fine going forward, lots of different things can cause TMJ pain like dental cavities, muscle clenching, as I mentioned trauma to the area, a sinus infection, a salivary gland disorder, nerve issues, TMJ can be caused by many, many different things, most likely with McNeil probably just biting down accidentally hard, causing a spring of that TMJ joint. Prognosis, most TMJ pains will resolve on their own without any significant treatment. He was able to return to the game and should be fine going forward. If he has continued pain, you can't inject that joint, which is an option to relieve pain and inflammation. Terry Young Arnold on the line's final defensive play had his right ankle area banged around a couple of times, he limped heavily coming off the field. It's good that he was unlisted on the initial injury report, so likely just a contusion for him. The most concerning guy coming out of the game was Sam LaPorda, so let's talk about him as we go over the Thursday injury report. Lions are favored by 14 points, the biggest spread in the NFL this year. They open at 12 and a half, so there's been some pretty big line movement towards the Lions already. Not sure which injuries might have explained that, although the Jaguar skill positions are all pretty banged up. Let's get to Sam LaPorda. Sam LaPorda left AC joint spring as he landed hard on the ground with it, aka shoulder separation. He played the next two plays which were the touchdown, the two-point conversion, then he left the game permanently. I didn't even know he got injured until after the game, didn't see him leave the field, didn't see any issues at the game. I got some tweets afterwards saying what's going on with LaPorda, that's when I found out that he actually got hurt. AC joints are generally not that big of a deal, especially a mild one, which is what it sounds like. In the Netflix series receiver, which you guys might have seen over the offseason, Devonta Adams had a grade three AC joint separation, that's one of the more severe ones. He got it injected, he played through even during that game. George Kittle also got an injection for AC joint during the playoffs and played with that. Quarterbacks can even play through these even in their throwing shoulder. Severe ones that you might get surgery like Matthew Stafford had early in his career and Trevor Lawrence, who the Jaguars quarterback who we're not going to see, he's considering getting AC joint surgery as well. So the question with Sam LaPorda, is he going to play, is he going to be out? He's got two MPs now, both Wednesday and Thursday, which means he's almost certainly out for this weekend. I think he could play if he wanted to, if he needed to, if this is the playoffs, or if it's a very important regular season game he'd play. Since this is a pretty unimportant regular season game against an AFC opponent where we're favored by 14, they're going to sit him likely for a strategic reason. So let's talk about game strategy, I love talking about game strategy and thinking about it as it relates to football as you go through a game and as you go through a season where eight and one, our mathematical probability of making the playoffs is 99% or more at this point. So the shift is going to be starting to move towards playoff health versus regular season performance, giving guys a game or two off for minor issues or even no issues might be a smart thing to do as we try to stay healthy and stay fresh and stay rested for the playoffs. The only guys on the team who really can't take game off are Jared Goff and maybe the offensive line, although Taylor Decker that might've been part of the thinking with him taking a game off last game. The O line, you don't want to give him games off for no good reason because you don't want to get Jared Goff killed. Taking a game or two off as multiple benefits, you get rest, you get healing, but importantly you also get risk reduction when you don't play, you're not going to get hurt. For example, if Aidan Hutchinson had taken that game off or maybe during that game, decrease the steps from 90% to 80% or 70%, he might not have played that one play that he broke his Tim Vibb. That was a flooky play. If he doesn't play that play, he's probably still with us. So load management has multiple benefits, giving Sam LaPorta a game or two off increases the likelihood he's going to be healthy for the playoffs. Keep a eye on this as we go forward into the rest of the regular season. You may notice guys with minor injuries just getting a game off and that might be the reason. Back to Sam LaPorta, he's been a little bit banged up this year, he had a hamstring issue in pre-season, a right low ankle spring in Week 3, I'm suspecting a right knee hyper extension in Week 7, and now a left AC joint in Week 10. So taking a game or two off might benefit all those previous injuries as well. That's the deal with LaPorta, he'll be out this week, probably 50/50 whether he plays next week against the Colts, another week AFC opponent. Moving on to Taylor Decker, we got some news with him this week as he spoke to the media. He gave some specifics about his shoulder issue. He injured it in practice last week, it was a rotator cuff string. Decker also said his chest injury from a couple weeks goes actually a PEC string. Resting that they listed it as a chest and not as a PEC, but now we have confirmation about the specifics there. PEC string similar to what Frank ragged out dealt with earlier in the year. Decker on Wednesday had an LP, Thursday FP, which means he's on track to play this weekend. No significant concerns with him. He does have a history of shoulder labrum surgery in 2017, Decker did say it was the same shoulder that you heard last week, as he had surgery on 2017, probably unrelated issue there. Decker is important because he's one of the five critical players on the team. Number one is Jared Goff. We lost number two with Aiden Hutchinson, the other three, in my opinion, Amung Ra because of how reliable and how much of a chain mover he is on our offense, and both offensive tackles Decker and Sewell. The reason the offensive tackles are there is because of how important the position is as well as how unreliable and how unproven our backups are. Although Dan Skipper did perform better than I expected last game, he's been shaking in the past so it was good to see him have a fairly solid outing against the Texans. That does make me feel a little bit better going forward in case we lose Decker or Sewell, but I would still consider it a very critical loss if he lost either of those offensive tackles. Next on the list is Malcolm Rodriguez. He had two straight weeks of NPs, no practices, missed two games, LPL Wednesday, FP on Thursday. He had that pretty scary looking left ankle spring where somebody dove and his ankle could have been a severe high ankle spray or a fracture, but turns out to be just a more mild ankle spring. With the FP on Thursday, he's on track to be available. We have three guys on the 21-day practice window still, Broderick Martin. Another FP due to his right knee hyper extension. He fought to a Melafangu, suspecting he has Achilles tendonitis. He dropped down to an LP, which is unusual during that 21-day practice window. That's a little bit concerning, Achilles tendonitis with Melafangu. That's something that can't get aggravated fairly easily, can have an uncertain, unreliable timeline as we saw with Christian McCaffrey. That LP is not a good sign, hopefully he gets back up to an FP on Friday. This episode is brought to you by Atlassian. I've been looking for these. The best deals go fast. Safe big with up to 60% off Sam Edelman's Surrell, free people, Colhan and more cold weather finds, great brands, great prices. That's why you rack. Emmanuel Mosley, two FPs this week, Wednesday and Thursday, so good news there. I would not expect Martin, Melafangu or Mosley to play in this game against the Jaguars. Expect them to use up their entire 21-day practice window before moving to the act of roster. Roger Martin should be moved to the act of roster early next week, Melafangu and Mosley, as long as they don't have setbacks, should be moved to the act of roster right before Thanksgiving. Carlton Davis was a new listing on Thursday, on Wednesday, he was unlisted, Thursday at LP due to a hand issue. No details on that at this moment, we'll have to keep an eye on this one on Friday. Again, for load management reasons, wouldn't be a problem with me if he missed a game. It'd be nice to see Ennis Rake Shaw out there getting some practice, getting some playing time, getting some more reps in case we need him later this season, and to get him ready for future years. Zadarius Smith, who had an FP on Wednesday, is now not listed at all on the report. He was listed as a personal day, remember, he got a personal bi-week last game because he hasn't had a bi-week yet this year, he'll be fine for this game as he makes his first lines appearance. Now, let's talk about a couple guys who got some updates about their health status over this past week. Eric Barnes spoke to the media this week and gave specifics about what happened with him. He heard himself September 22, about two months ago in the Arizona game. This week, he said he had right MCL and PCL surgery, so now we know the diagnosis. He also gave a quote, which was, "I didn't know I was going to be able to ride the bike today, got on the bike, a little bit of walking inside the water, which was good for me, and my legs been super stiff and today is the first day I felt kind of normal, it's been pretty well." On X, Byron Henry asked any chance that Barnes could be back for the Super Bowl. Without an OR report, an operating room report, impossible to say, this is now three guys with the lines with MCL surgery, including John Cominsky and Connor Galvin. The timeline for the other two guys was five plus months. We don't know how similar Barnes's issue is to those other two guys. We're already in mid-November at this point, and Barnes is barely getting on an exercise bike. So Super Bowl, here's the issue with that. I'm sure Barnes would love to play in the Super Bowl. Even if he's at way less than 100%, just like Aiden Hutchinson. But with the Super Bowl, it takes two to tango, meaning the lines have to want to play him as well. Derek Barnes is not Aiden Hutchinson, he's not that elite level player, and he may not even be with the team in the future. Barnes is a unrestricted free agent after this year, whereas Hutchinson's got at least two years and we're probably going to extend him in the offseason, he'll probably be with the team for another five to ten years. If Barnes wants to have any chance at playing in the Super Bowl, he needs to get close to 100%, probably at least three weeks prior to the Super Bowl. Again, we're in mid-November already, he's barely getting on an exercise bike, he would need to get his 21-day practice window started in early January. Is that possible? It seems unlikely at this point. Derek Barnes at 70% is probably not much different than one of our current guys at 100%, who we would have been riding the entire season into the playoffs and into the Super Bowl. So it's unlikely, lines would make an exception for him to play, like the lines would definitely do for Aiden Hutchinson. Another guy who got updates this past week was Jalen Reeves Mabel, he was put on IR over the weekend with his neck. His injury on video looked like a shoulder issue, and I believe the initial report during the game was a shoulder issue. It looked like a possible shoulder subluxation, which is a transient or temporary dislocation of the shoulder, the way his arm got pulled as he was falling. How is it possible that he has a neck issue and is on IR at this point? Well, there are three possibilities, I think. Number one, maybe it wasn't a shoulder issue, maybe he had a stinger. Stingers are usually a brachial plexus injury, which is around the armpit, but sometimes they're a spinal issue that is impinging on her. Maybe they found a spine impingement issue. A second possibility is maybe they were evaluating the shoulder with imaging, but incidentally found something in the neck. That can happen sometimes, sometimes you're doing labs, sometimes you're doing imaging, and you see things that you weren't necessarily looking for. Another possibility is the injury may have been completely unrelated to the shoulder issue seeing on video, maybe he got hurt on a different play. Whatever the reason, we don't have specifics about the neck issue right now, he's been put all IR so he's out at least four games. Hopefully this is not some serious spinal issue. A guy who's been getting healthier is James Houston. He's been getting a lot more playing time the past couple of weeks, still only 16 defensive snaps last week against the Texans though. He did pick up a sack and a nice pressure with an outside rush, which we haven't really seen so far this year. He clearly has the most speed and burst of any of our defensive hands, which is how he got that sack in the first place. He's got a burst, he's got a speed that quarterbacks don't really expect. None of our other guys can really do that. Maybe Zyderia Smith can. I'm glad the coaches are giving him a little bit more opportunity to get some playing time. He can provide something our other defensive ends can't and the other team may not be expected. Moving now to the Jaguars very long list of players on their report. Mike Bigsby, their number one running back with that ankle, NP Wednesday and Thursday. He's their number one running back with 519 yards this year. He's been having an ankle issue the past two or three weeks and did aggravate last game. With two MPs, I'm suspecting he'll probably be out for our game, which would mean Travis ETN. Their second running back who has 298 yards on the year probably will take the bulk of the carries. Tyson Campbell, a cornerback with a shoulder two LPs, Ezra Cleveland guard and ankle two LPs, Gabe Davis, wide receiver shoulder two LPs, Darnis Johnson, running back hamstring two LPs, Blake Hance, offensive lineman knee two LPs, Josh Heinz Allen, their star defensive end with a shoulder two LPs. That's one to watch. Trevor Lawrence, their quarterback. He's going to be out with the left AC joint spraying. This will be the second game he'll have missed for this last game, Mac Jones filled in who was 14 for 22 for 111 yards against the Vikings. Brandon Schurff guard two LPs with a knee, Mason Smith, defensive tackle two LPs with a ankle, Brian Thomas, their number one wide receiver. He heard his ribs two weeks ago, still on the report with two LPs. He hasn't missed a game though, so I would expect him to continue to play on Sunday. Daniel Thomas, safety hamstring with two LPs, Keeland Robinson running back with a toe with two FPs, notably absent off the report as Christian Kirk, their second leading wide receiver who's on IR with a clavicle fracture suffered two weeks ago. All right, that's it for today, enjoy the game Sunday, lines with the biggest spread in the NFL this year, 14 weight favorites. Hopefully we can build a big lead like we've done a couple times this year and get some of our guys some rest in the third and fourth quarters. Thanks for listening. Let's bring it here together. Let's go up, baby. Lines on three. One, two, three. Drives. You've had enough of that shit.
