Mike Moore Media, the first place to hear Rocky County News and information. Today, starting on a sad note, the Eden community is mourning the loss of Peggy Goode, a downtown merchant for many years, a stitch in time monogramming, screen printing and sign shop, and former president of the Merchants Association. She died unexpectedly Tuesday morning. Peggy Goode was scheduled to be Grand Marshal of the Old Leaksville Christmas Parade November 29th, an event she started years ago. Since I've posted this on our Facebook page about 24 hours ago, more than 500 people have seen it, shared it, and commented, friends, family and classmates sharing memories, calling her kind, sweet, giving, talented, special, a terrific lady, always willing to pitch in help, an icon in the Leaksville community, an encyclopedia of knowledge about downtown history and events. Boone and Cook Funeral Home is serving the family. Here's an exclusive report on last night's May at End Town Council meeting. Members of the police and fire departments were presented life-saving awards in connection with a medical emergency in May involving a Sixth Avenue man, Officer Jonathan Bowman, fire chief Dylan Garner, firefighters Kim Bryant, Brandon Griffin, and William Litro. Officer Bowman responded to the call in about two and a half minutes and immediately administered CPR, saving the man's life before being transported to the hospital. I sat beside his wife last night, retired military, who told me their quick response was amazing, unbelievable, never seen anything like it. Buckingham County EMS personnel, Alvia Medina, and Jaquia Reynolds were recognized prior to last night's meeting. Trevor Garner, Garner and a company CPA in Eden, presented the town's annual audit, calling it "very good" with no issues, deficiencies, or disagreements, and complementing council, manager, and staff for their professionalism, saying how nice it was to work with in his words intelligent people. Mayor Dwight Lake said it was his 14th audit and the first one ever with no issues. Council discussed repairs at the caretaker's house at Ferris Memorial Park and decided to table the matter until budget time. Councilwoman Tisch Gourd said the house is uninhabitable and it would take $100,000 to fix problems, including mold and correct many safety and code violations. Students at Garfield Park were tabled until the December meeting. $5,000 from Duke Energy and $6,000 from the Redesville Area Foundation will be used for improvements now scheduled for next spring. A rezoning request by Chris Caten was approved for 222 Taft Street from R-12 medium density to R-6 high density, consistent with neighboring properties. The change allows three single-family houses to be built. Another business, a new Dodge Durango has been put into service for the police department, a second one is currently being upfitted. Former Chief Charles Caruso, owner of TA's cleaning service, will be cleaning sidewalks and bricks at the municipal cemetery at no charge. Leaf pickup continues until the end of January. Crews are making multiple sweeps. Mike Sears, water treatment director, had an update on EPA regulations concerning lead and copper pipes. Residents are getting letters now. The town's water is safe, meets and surpasses all state and federal water quality standards, but lead pipes still exist in older homes and businesses. The town is getting a $24,000 youth sports grant to rehab trails on the south side of Ferris Memorial Park and a $45,000 rural economic development grant for work at Town Hall and the police department.
