This is Turly Talks. Hollywood is going through a woke meltdown. The loss of revenue in jobs has utterly devastated the moviemaking industry, and ironically, they only have themselves to blame. We're going to see precisely where Hollywood's demise began and why it looks like the days of Tinseltown are indeed coming to an end. Hollywood is hemorrhaging. Theater audiences have shrunk by 50%. Yes, 50% over just the last four years. In fact, in 2022 alone, Hollywood saw a staggering 40% decline in ticket sales, and note this is after COVID. Hollywood saw its worst ticket sales decline ever a year after theaters were reopened, and ironically, you can't blame the streaming services like Netflix, and that's because Netflix itself has seen its market value, cratering nearly 30%, losing $42 billion in value after the company announced that their subscribers shrank for the first time since 2011. And as if things couldn't get worse, the writers and actors' strikes over the last year further devastated Hollywood. Nearly 20% of Hollywood jobs evaporated over the course of those strikes, basically gutting what's left of the industry, and it's not just the blockbusters that have imploded. Even the documentary film industry is crumbling. Variety Magazine reported on a recent panel discussion of documentary film insiders, all of whom admitted that what they called the whole ecosystem for documentary filmmaking is in the midst of a total collapse. So, what's going on here? Well, there was a very suggestive poll that just came out from Rasmussen that found that moviegoers, by a margin of two to one, think that movies have gotten considerably worse in the past 20 years. The poll found that 54% of those surveyed believe that the motion picture industry has deteriorated in the last two decades. Just 27%, not even three and ten, thought the movies were getting better. In other words, the answer as to why audiences have begun to turn their back and mass away from Hollywood is because in the end, their movies simply suck. And that's because they do. But when did that decline start? Why did we see Hollywood begin to go so woke? That's exactly what we're about to find out. Screenwriter Lou Aguilar actually roots this characteristic quality decline of movies in Hollywood's coordinated attack on Bush and the war on terror at the beginning of the 21st century. He notes that far from producing patriotic, pro-nationalist films, Hollywood produced a whole swath of highly critical anti-war movies depicting American troops as either clueless ignorant pawns or murderous raping psychopaths. So these are movies like American Soldiers or redacted or the Mark of Kane or Home of the Brave or Green Zone and a number of others. And while all these movies lost money at the box office, it didn't seem to matter. As long as each production company had a big blockbuster to offset all these left-wing failures, they just kept making them. They were in effect subsidized by the blockbusters. So regardless of anyone's view on the war on terror, this in many respects seems to have been the beginning of the end for Hollywood in that, from the 2010s onward, DEI ended up more and more dominating the screen. And that's when we began to see identity politics take over and literally destroy what a previous generation had built, whether it was Disney or the Star Wars franchise or the Marvel Comics universe, it didn't matter. Whatever got inherited by this new generation of woke ideologues got squandered. And it got squandered because wokeness doesn't know how to create. Wokeness is a destructive force, not a creative one. Wokeness is about rebellion and revolt. It's about iconoclasm and shattering systemic evil practices and systems. But that's not art. I mean, Rush Limbaugh long ago recognized this. He always said the aim of art is to evoke, not provoke, art awakens our highest aspirations and human flourishing. And wokeness is completely bereft of this ability to evoke. It can only provoke. And so as a result, theater audiences have rebelled and they've rebelled overwhelmingly. And they're not just rebelling by turning their backs on Hollywood. They're rebelling by actually seeing and supporting movies that Hollywood has rejected, like the sound of freedom, which has grossed over a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide. The fact is that Hollywood is imploding not only because most people find woke values odious, but also because woke values have had the inadvertent effect of reawakening and reinvigorating traditional moral values and commitments. That's why Hollywood is collapsing all at the same time the sound of freedom is topping the box office charts. We're seeing both the collapse in woke values and a resurgence of traditional values. That's the amazing trend that we're seeing happening all over the world. And there's simply nothing, absolutely nothing that the woke left can do. To stop it.
