UFC 309 Review, Patriots, Bruins
All right, guys, what's up? Obviously big weekend of fighting in combat sports. I guess you could say I'll put quotations around sports in combat. I guess I guess yeah combat and quote start quote sports and quote This weekend between obviously had the Mike Tyson Jake Paul fiasco on a Friday night on Netflix and then last night we had Kind of an important card for the UFC down in New York at a Madison Square Garden 309 with John Jones and Steve Bay Miochich in the main event and that's where I'll start I Kind of said my initial reaction to the fight last night was You know, what a what a waste of time it kind of was It's a little harsh. I think in retrospect obviously, you know Steve Bay Miochich is a legend and probably The most accomplished heavy weight of all time at this point as far as the UFC goes At this point in time So, you know, it's hard to look down and say You know, he didn't really deserve a chance at this if he wanted it, but I It it's hard not to look at the situation and How the fight went and you kind of go? Well, I mean, that's exactly what you would expect out of a 42 year old man Who hadn't fought in three years and had one in four years? Didn't really know exactly what Steve Bay's been doing the past few years either He's kind of a little bit of a Under-the-radar sort of guy kind of just a regular dude So he's not out there outwardly posting every single day him training So you kind of wonder if he ever stepped away You know, he didn't really say anything about that, but Yeah, he just looks slow And just right away. He kind of looked like he really shouldn't have been in there. I Don't know if the result really would have changed if You know, this fight was done a few years earlier I think Jones is just that too good of an athlete And it's ridiculous that he really hasn't lost much of a step even at 37 years old and Is still able to do the things he does athletically I so I don't know if the result would have really been any different if Steve Bay was a few years younger and he was facing a John Jones even at the same size But I would say that that was definitely not the best version of Steve Bay And I think that he made the good decision to retire Last night. It just didn't yeah. He just didn't look like he was in the fight from the get-go He just looked slow Even the punches that he was landing now He has always kind of been notorious for you know, he doesn't hit you with a very fast shot Doesn't hit you with what looks like that big of a shot button would you know? Oftentimes you don't see it and he's messed some guys up with with that And he's never really been like a ferocious guy to begin with he's kind of you know He kind of picks you apart and then all of a sudden he hits you with the big shot Everything that he hit John with it really looked like he had there was no effect on John whatsoever so John really didn't have to respect it all that much The takedown that he hit in the first round that was just that was just gnarly and I mean, it's like If he can do that to steep a miochitch who's a big guy, you know, what would he do to? Alex Baja who he wants to fight and I thought Dana White made a good point about that at the end of at the post fight press conference You know, why why would that what you saw last night? Why would you think that Alex Pereira would be able to stop anything that John Jones would want to do in the grappling department? So I think that and we'll get into that in a minute, but Yeah, no, that was just it was a little bit. It was a it was already kind of disappointing I think it was a fight I think that's I think a lot of people thought it was gonna go quicker, which I didn't really understand because You know, John's never John. Obviously had that quick finish a sarogan But he's never really been like type guy that like, you know, tries to get you out of there quick He's really kind of methodical So I did think it was gonna go a little bit longer I thought it was gonna go all five rounds before the fight Once the fight actually started it became kind of clear that Mio Chitch was on borrowed time from the beginning But you know, obviously that first round didn't do him any favors Gets beat up and then he came out in the second round and he looked like he really didn't want to be in there And then Jones eventually gets the stoppage later on in the fight, but Yeah, and it didn't so you know props to John obviously he's The greatest fighter of all time But there is something to be said for, you know, so far. He's had two fights at heavyweight and One of them was against a guy that admittedly that said Admitted two weeks before the fight that he really hadn't trained for it, which I it looked like he didn't right away And then the second one was against a 42 year old Steep amio Chitch who hadn't fought in three years So there is something to be desired as far as a legacy goes for John Jones at heavyweight Obviously the big story all week has been and really the past few months. I think Has been Tom Aspen all shadow Being the interim champ he defended that belt earlier this year against Curtis blades and You know It's if John is going to keep that title He's going to have to fight Tom Aspen all I think that that's really the only way that this ends So either John is gonna be one of three things here either John's gonna retire because For whatever reason he does not want to fight Tom Aspen all I don't know if it's a fear thing I don't know if it's a risk-reward thing. It probably the latter It's probably a if I'm gonna put myself in position to lose Then I want to be well compensated and you know he has a right to feel that way It is He's strong arming as in is he just like saying no, I'm not doing that In an attempt to get an egregious offer. I don't know I don't know if he really wants to fight Tom or if he or if He's trying to play possum. I guess and try and get a better deal in the negotiation Or I think the third option is he sticks around but he's gonna have to vacate that belt and Do whatever he wants. I guess. I don't know. He's mentioned fighting Alex Pereira That doesn't really make much sense given you know that he's man handling heavyweights and Alex Pereira was getting taken down at 185 So Yeah, I don't see how that would go He's mentioned, you know wanted to have some fun fights with like Derek Lewis and Jamal Hill, which is very very peculiar But hey man, if that's what you want to do as long as you're not tying up the title I don't see what the issue is but To each their own. I think that eventually he will end up fighting Tom Aspenall. I Think that it's just too big of a fight for the UFC to not make It's probably the biggest heavyweight fight Of all time. I can't maybe you know, maybe obviously those steep a DC fights were pretty were pretty big but you know, we're talking about John Jones who's really never lost and You know, you got a hot up and comer and Tom Aspenall who a lot of people think has the skill set and the size to beat him So I think that it's too big of a fight for it not to happen and I just think the UFC will cave in at some point and get a deal done here or John will cave in or someone will cave in and Hopefully, hopefully will be for all the better. I think I Just think that it's this too much money to be made and you know Business is business and I think that the cooler heads will prevail and I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon I think this is gonna take a while to sort out. I don't know if Tom Aspenall fights again It could be the case he'd be taking a giant risk if he did that but Maybe just to solidify himself as that number as the guy that should be fighting John But yeah, I don't expect to see John back until at least the summertime if not next year Being a year from now So yeah, I think this is gonna be a saga that goes on throughout the winter throughout the spring and then Who knows what happens, but my prediction is I do think the fight will eventually happen I just don't think it's gonna be anytime soon In the Komein event obviously had Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler Rematching in a five-round Komein event. They first met a few years ago for what was the vacant title? and Oliveira beat him beat Michael Chandler in that first fight Chandler had rocked him in the first round Almost won the title in his own right However Oliveira got him out of there in the second round a lot of people I think thought was good. It was gonna be similar That it was gonna be crazy back and forth fight Oliveira kind of dominated pretty much the most of the most of this fight Had Chandler Heard on the feet a couple times Backed him up against the fence took him down grappling was really on point. I've There isn't I He's probably the most exciting fighter to watch on the ground Charles Oliveira Obviously you have the submission threat He doesn't you know he plays jiu-jitsu in in a way. That's just so fun to watch You know I just get a little sick and tired of all these wrestlers are dominating the grappling all the time And they just sit there in someone's guard and they're just really not doing anything meanwhile. Oliveira is Constantly trying to improve the position constantly looking for submissions He could have did a little bit more damage he didn't really do a lot of damage to a Chandler On top. I guess that's that would sort of be the one nitpick you could have at him Not like a muy kano sort of type where muy kano dishes out a lot of damage but I think that that's testament to you know Chandler's such an explosive guy I mean if you start trying to unload on him, he's gonna pop out of there But you know it was a dominant performance up until the fifth round when Chandler almost pulls the rabbit out of a hat and Almost gets a finish with some terrible officiating Chandler ended up on top and obviously not his fault. I guess you could say You know, he's in a moment where he's got oliveira hurt thinks he can get him out of there and he hits him in the head in the back of the head maybe you know three or four times right in front of the official and Keith Peterson didn't really do anything about it but No, it was it the fifth round it up kind of saving the fight. I would say I don't know. I didn't actually see any of the bonuses, let me go and look because I feel like it could have been Performance of fight of the night bonus Obviously just based off of that last round it was yeah, it did get the fight of the night Yeah, that last round really saved it. I think But I don't think a lot of people thought that that fight was gonna be going five rounds for sure I didn't think it was gonna go five rounds. I thought Just the prospect of making it a five round fight was just sort of for marketing matters But take they ended up going all the whole way. I didn't think what two guys known for finishing fights that it would It would it would go that way, but man Charles Oliver is good It's he it's a shame. He probably you know He's probably gonna fight for the title again He's lost to both of those guys now that are fighting for the belts in rumored to be January. I Don't know if I see it any different with Islam this time around. I think Islam is getting better With each every passing fight if Armand were to somehow win the fight Well, that would also lead to the tricky situation of Islam would probably get the immediate rematch. So Charles would probably be Forced to take another fight But if he did in some Which way shape or form fight Armand? You know obviously given the way that that those three rounds went you might feel decent about Oliver's chances You know yeah, I would love to see him get the belt again if if he could even he's just so fun to watch And really has a lot of aura to when he gets up there But man, is he good and he was really picking Chandler apart from I mean I think there was only one ten eight round given in the whole fight That you know, they felt like it could have been a couple of ten eight rounds. That's how dominant performance All the Vera gave but that was really good performance from him Great great balls from Chandler who obviously went through the whole shit with Conor McGregor takes two years off and Grits out almost pulls off a comeback So props to him probably gonna sit on the sidelines again and wait for Conor McGregor unfortunately I know he mentioned a couple of the guys I can't really think of off the top of my head of what he said in the post fight But I'm gonna anticipate he's gonna sit around and wait for Connor At least for part of the year and see where it goes Obviously on you had bow nickel on the undercard there A lot of people didn't Particularly care for that fight or that performance I would say that it showed that he has poise For a guy that's only had Six fights or whatever it is now He's obviously been in high stress situations before with all the wrestling at Penn State but You know it you never know what's gonna happen when you're in under the bright lights in the octagon and You know, he wasn't getting discouraged by the crowd or anything like that And Paul Craig's not, you know, it wasn't an easy fight. It was a good step up in competition Obviously Paul Craig's fought at 205. He's a big dude. He was a lot bigger than bow in there And bow was forced out of a striking match with him He didn't want to take him down. He didn't want to play into Paul's jiu-jitsu game And he ended up you can out of winning a striking match. So, you know, it obviously Not the greatest not the most exciting fight, but You know, I think he showed a lot in his development and I think he'll be better off in the long run after that but Obviously, I'll touch briefly on the fiasco. That was Friday there was Netflix puts on event. I honestly haven't I'm not even gonna be able to give you an opinion on the women's fight because Netflix is streaming was so awful and I couldn't see Any of that fight. I couldn't see any of the women's fight. I kept turning it on. It would go for It would buffer for about I don't know a minute or so and then it would play for 10 seconds and then it would buffer again for another minute and The whole viewing experience was just awful. It was just terrible Netflix hopefully will figure this out in the future. I know that they're going to be hosting Games on Christmas and we livestreaming games on Christmas. They're gonna be live streaming WWE's Monday Night Raw starting at January 6th, I believe and Yeah, so hopefully this was just a giant test. I mean, obviously they had a massive audience They said that it had 60 million people watching and I believe it It's obviously it's worldwide and it's on one streaming platform. So and it really got the attention of a lot of people and I honestly was a little bit shocked to see how many like of my family members that I don't really talk to that often Were talking about how they were watching it because I mean I kind of had forgotten about it by the Until last week until like the beginning of this this up this past week But yeah, no, I mean The livestream was a fiasco. Obviously the fight itself Much to be desired at least I can say at least we can say that you know a 58 year old man Didn't go on there and get like seriously injured Because he could have been I mean a guy that had a Blood transfusion and almost died apparently a few months ago The fact that they let that guy in the ring a little crazy, but you know Mike Tyson is An American hero, I guess, you know, he's everyone's sort of uncle and Everyone was rooting for him, but I was kind of more pissed off that Jake Paul was basically fighting a punching bag for Two-minute rounds eight two-minute rounds and about halfway through he looked like he was gassed and I was like, what is this brother? You know What are you doing? So, I mean his claim that he's a top pro boxer I don't really see it, but you know, that's him. I guess Oh am I having an issue here, no, I think I'm okay, okay so that's that for the combat sports obviously I'll touch on the oh Actually before we get that before we get it. I will say that that whole Netflix thing It makes me want to bring I so I am When I become president of this country we are bringing back cable all these streaming services They're so awful They almost always fuck up they If if they're not consistently buffering, they're either terrible quality They're booting you off for no frickin reason. It's like when why what what was wrong with? You turn the TV on you go to the channel you of the show you want to watch and that's it what was wrong with that I don't understand what was wrong with that and Now that all these sports are on all these streaming platforms. It's making it more difficult and When they first started doing it I was kind of on board because I was like oh because all right more people will be able to watch it because more people are cutting the cord but now that I have been forced to cut the cord because cable is so unaffordable because No one has cable so the cable companies have to charge outrageous amounts money to make money on it I Now want everyone to go back to cable so that way we can have it for cheaper I Pay for grandma's cooking channels grandma pays for my sports channels That should be the way it works It's a beautiful socialistic society one of the mankind's greatest creations cable TV and an example of socialism at its best and I don't see what was wrong with it looking back in hindsight and I don't think it's gonna get any better. I don't know what The future's gonna hold for it because I mean I think that with the pirating and all that stuff that all these streaming platforms are just gonna get more and more unaffordable and they're gonna get more and more expensive and more and more people are going to be pirating it and I just think that that affects everything from the cost obviously of subscriptions because people are stealing the streams The cost of going to a game because the leagues are making are losing money because people are pirating it. It's a whole like It's just a whole Domino effect. It's like if we could just get cable and just make it 60 $70 a month and you all pay for it Nobody complains nobody complains Everybody's happy everybody gets the shit that they want and That's it You don't have to go plugging your laptop into the frickin HDMI adapter So I can plug it into my TV so I can watch you know So I can click through ten ads and and no no no no no you pay for the cable service We keep the cable cheap and Everybody's happy we don't we know we don't need streams. We don't need no. We don't need none of this so that's my opinion on that and it it just I don't like it. I don't I feel like these streaming services for sports is already a failed experiment I don't know what what the league what these leagues are gonna do with the ever-changing world They're gonna have to figure it out, but yeah, I don't know But so anyway, let's get to the Patriots game today They drop a very winnable game to a pretty mid Los Angeles Rams team Coming in four and five Drake may your quarterback probably played. I mean that could have probably is his best game and to end obviously the ending Unfortunate that second game that he this year that he's sort of I guess throwing a interception to end the game Not what you want to see I guess out of your rookie quarterback and hopefully This one at least seemed to be more of a miscommunication between his receiver and him then The last one was where he was just you know chucking it up there it seems like he thought maybe his that Demario Douglas was going straight and he Just they just misconnected Or it could have been a bad throw. I don't know but you know The defense obviously, you know gets run through again Their offensive line was getting Drake being killed all game You know Just in a it's a frustrating it was a frustrating loss All together You know you let Cooper cup take off for What was it a 80 yard touchdown or wherever the heck it was where he just breaks free? Beats a defender and there's no safety over the top and it's like with that guy on the field It's like you're not gonna have a safety over the top Knowing that he can get away from all these defenders in the slot it's just Yeah, I don't know too many blunders um, you know, obviously they Got down the field in the first half. I'm trying to remember the sequence, but they had gotten down the field Took a couple penalties had to punt it Ended up giving up a touch back on on the punt They just you know They they they're they're a stupid team. They take too many penalties Um If they're not taking penalties, they're dropping balls, you know kachon booty drops a couple balls Um jailin polk takes a awful fall start that almost, you know that adds five yards to your field goal uh late in the game Uh, yeah, he in eliminates any chance that you had of, you know, if you were gonna go for it in that situation um Yeah down there just stupid team And uh, hopefully their quarterback doesn't get dragged down with them Um, I guess that's the only way that you can Really see being A bad thing for drake may at the moment is that he just has a boneheaded interception once a game Um, but other than that, I mean he was really carrying the team for most of today's game Um, so You know It is what it is another frustrating loss definitely a winnable game against a team that's really not that great Uh west coast team coming over Which feels like it should be a better spot than it actually is I think if you look at the numbers historically teams From the west coast on the road in the east coast Um, for that was 1 p.m. Games actually have a better winn percentage than you would think that they do But you know, you still always feel like, you know, they had a short week They played miami on monday night and then they how they had to come across They felt like it was a bad spot for the rams And they definitely let you stay in the game and they definitely gave you opportunity So when that when that game and you just can't capitalize and that's pretty much been The story of the organization for the past five years is how many games have they had That were one possession games at the end that that was just like man You know If you could just get a stop there or you complete a pass or whatever you don't take a penalty and you know Four and seven Definitely is a lot better than three and eight. I feel like I feel like four and seven You're now like kind of mid you're kind of you're almost like kind you're like just a little bit below average um three and eight you feel like you're You know with the drabs of the league because that's kind of where you are so So there's that And then obviously another drab of the league not really but um the broons uh losing yesterday to uh a kind of a crappy uh st louis blues team after they had a team that they had just beaten Earlier in the week and came back on the blues end up coming back on them Uh giving up a goal in the third period that tied the game at two it goes no over time and uh the blues end up winning I'm stunned that uh jemma gumrey is still the coach of the team as of 10 24 On sunday november 17th. I thought for sure that uh he was going to get the the can uh this morning But or during the Patriots game, but I guess not and they're playing tomorrow. So I guess he's going to be uh sticking around for at least one more game here um, you know, they get blown out in dallas Uh, you know, I thought that that could have been it right there too But no they come back home They lose yesterday felt like that was going to be the nail in the coffin I guess it's not and uh Yeah, no, they have a game tomorrow now against uh columbus who's you know, not that good of a team I would imagine if they were to lose tomorrow that that's it that you know, but who am I to judge? I don't know if it's Ownership looking at them as a whole And being like well, you're all kind. I mean it's because at the end of the day. It's really not jemma gumrey's fault um You know, I think that the decisions that have been made to Keep a competitive product on the ice the past few years um Or have a chance at a Stanley cup is really kind of coming back to bite them. Um, and they've sort of run out of You know this Luck that they've had with Some of these players may be overachieving Or they're just getting older and you know, I don't know it feels like They're in a little bit of a rough spot where they're really not bad enough that you can just like blow it up But they're not good enough that you would say that this is a Stanley cup contending team Um You know, they have good talent. I don't know if they have they don't have great talent um, definitely the forwards are Just not there. Um, I think the worst thing though is that they're boring. They're not a fun team to watch Um, they take stupid penalties. They suck on the penalty kill. They don't really score any goals Uh, they're just not that fun to team to watch Uh, you know, maybe the best thing is the most exciting thing of the season that's happened so far was the door off beating the Absolute dog shit out of uh, jamie ben the other night In retaliation to a hit on brand and carlo but other than that, uh, you know Not not really much go not a lot of highlights From then them on a given night And I mean they're they're kind of up there with like the new york islanders I would imagine on other teams other people's fans is list of like who's the most uninteresting team in the league Yeah, no, it's it hasn't exactly been A fun time this year, uh, as a Bruins fan, especially when you compare it to the past two years uh, all those regular season wins, which maybe maybe they they'll You know They'll fire the coach and they'll catch wind in their sales and maybe they'll be better off in the long run but hard to imagine, uh, this team really doing much this year Um, and the longer that they seem to wait to fire the coach um I what this feels like it's an easy decision. I mean, he's not under the contract next year Um, he's not getting anything out of the players. He himself looks like he's checked out Uh brand and carlo like I said gets hit from behind. They call it a major. They end up reversing the call and then um You know He really showed no emotion Uh, when they announced that decision after his player had just gotten, you know, absolutely Blasted from behind, um Yeah, no, I don't see any reason to and he's really I mean, he's really not that great of a coach Obviously his record has been has been good. He got a lot of I get you got the guy. I'll give him credit He got the guys to play the past two years but obviously whatever he was doing has worn off And uh, now I think it's time to just get in a He's not really that great of a coach because you know anytime he shuffles a lineup around it never seems to work um Yeah, no, I I would just move on. This should be the easiest decision in the world Um And then if that doesn't do anything then you've got to start trading off pieces You got to start trying to find, you know, if you can light a fuse under them somehow but Yeah, no, I've I'm actually I'm stunned that it's again. It's 10 29 at night on sunday And they're playing in less than 24 hours and he's still here but uh We'll see we'll see I if they if they do lose tomorrow, I can't I can't see him back I've found I Can't see him behind the bench for their next game. So That's it. Um, obviously in my throat, it's a little Horse from talking all this long. So uh, I'm gonna let you guys go and uh, see you see you next time
