The left-wing bike podcast is brought to you in association with earth spas, PFT travel, paddahorn photography, Maurice Barr by the Morphy, railway unlimited, poet done motors, Talbot Hotel Carlo and Cora sports. Good evening and welcome, welcome, welcome. The legend that is Kevin Regan is out of action for a couple of weeks. He's swapped his microphone and headset for nappies and suitors for a while and that's allowed to use massive congratulations to him and Nev. I am here to take you to the next hopefully hour or so depending on how long I can survive with my two guests who are the two legends that are Edel Hayden and Animal Eye. Welcome to both of you. Hello, again, hi. Now the two of you are a little bit far away from your respective microphones so just come a little bit closer. The first thing I have to say to you is massive congratulations. The whole county is talking about you. You've even reached as far as the council chamber in Carlo because there was a clamor to be the first to congratulate you today at the April council meeting so that was that. I don't know it's hard to know where to start because Edel for you and your soldiers so long it probably feels like a mad sense of relief and Edel for you you're relatively new to playing senior county so this just feels like it's probably expected. Edel, go with you first. Has the sunken yet? No, kind of starting to know all right but I suppose it was so long coming for us all really and a lot of even supporters and players that had played down through the years I suppose it was just so long coming and even when the final whistle went like even today's kind of after I don't think it just didn't feel really like it's we're used to being at the other end of it you know on semi-finals and different things so it's kind of only now and we had the little breakaway that you kind of kind of get to sit in a little bit but it's absolutely brilliant, brilliant for kind of ladies football. I remember it must be 10 years ago when I was with the Carlo people asking on your kinslets to do a report on it Carlo women's match and you featured heavily in at that stage so that's obviously 2014 and you were playing at that stage so you're on the go you're on the go of oil and fairness. Yeah, no it's a long time I think I started out with Brendan Hayden and Geraldine Marge on an under-16 development squad so I kind of was talking to the junior panel then kind of when I was 15 so it was 2001 I think I started the first game I think it was against like or someone like that like so it's a long time the long time for you Lancer finals as do you know what to show far it I suppose so getting over the line this week was just unbelievable like you know it's like winning and then I know you want to catch a crowbar and doze but it's like nearly all hard and there and then like you know hitting yeah good 100% and then like you're new on the scene this first or second year with the senior panel I listened to my third year now yeah I was calling when I was 13 so yeah yeah okay well confession because I still think of you as being 12 so um for those of you know I could open the window here and shout and hell it would hear me okay so towards your on the panel and after the excitement of the win and the celebrations and all that goes away um does it does it start to feel what does it start to feel real or do you still feel like it's something that well I think for us like obviously um I've been through like the house and loads of the team like I was part of two there um on Ireland semi-final losses but I think for us like we obviously haven't been in the panel like very long so the win is just like only like it feels like we're just on this high obviously from the length to um junior championship last year and then this as well like it honestly just couldn't be going better at the minute yeah so loving it. One of the things that obviously stood out this year was uh the amount of drawing games um and please forgive me I wasn't just so much going I haven't been able to get to any of the games but I followed very closely on on Twitter and um it got to the stage where I thought I was what I thought I had to refresh that I was still typing Carol ladies GA on Twitter and I thought that must be a tweet from last week because there was like again it was uh drawn but um having to battle out having to battle games out to get draws or to um be it to stay in games or hang on to hang on to a draw is there a certain element of building toughness with that do you think the draw stood to you like go to the other there oh yeah um definitely like I think um I suppose that is where the last three years now so we're kind of having been building something in the last three years like it doesn't just happen overnight so I think um just with the kind of core group of us been there for the last three years like we really this year kind of after our last year against down like we kind of nearly most of us decided into dressing room after that came like that we I was we were coming back and um Ed was saying he was going to give another year so just for having him there and just the experience he has and known players and after getting some of the younger guards come in as well and we knew from the start of the year going forward that was going to be a really strong panel so I think today against for mana when we went down to waiting our score at half time and that dressing room at half time just kind of I think it kicked off from there we just route to give a speech at half time and we just went out and got the draw and back and for a team to go down to waiting our score I suppose at any stage of behind a rule in the mouth you know and we just dug so deep in that game the weather was so bad as well and just to come over then with the draw you know and then the same with with longford like probably on a different year we probably would have given nearly and kind of dropped the head you know but we just kept fighting until the last whistle and I suppose the same against for mana the semi-final like it was literally the last kick it again we won so I think we're really mentally like we're so much more mentally prepared as well now as physically and I suppose fitness wise as well so yes I still can go to first this year now so far anyway and are the days gone of kind of struggling for pitches and that is like to swim and commit to play there because I remember I remember the great got his name more contribute or Brian and more involved with the kamogi and oh my god why more does that come to me and it'll come back in a second but I remember him coming to me more so about the the kamog at the time but um he wanted me to do an article about how difficult it was for ladies teams to especially counter teams to get access to pitches not just for matches but even to get a club to be willing to um you know give the team access for training like I hope those days are are long behind us is that is that where we're at either you can take that I don't mind. No I don't think I think last year probably wasn't as much of an issue but I think this year now um to be totally honest with you there's no point in and sugar caught in a leader like I think we have been struggling to get pitches and like kind of knowing kind of days just say we could have training on Wednesday and finding out a lunchtime where we're training and and different things like that so I suppose just with the bad weather too um the pitches haven't been great around and then all the club teams are coming back as well but it is a serious issue for for the ladies I suppose at the moment especially um like you know we are after getting that access now and we are putting in huge work like the same as any other um counter team around and I'm not sure if any other counter team has issues so we have but um I suppose like a pitch is kind of one thing you definitely need anyway you know one especially a counter team going forward um it just how now you'd imagine what division four champions next to your your name is now hopefully it maybe that brings within a certain amount of um I suppose recognition but it shouldn't take that um you know you're you never come across the situation where uh a lads county team being hurt in our football wouldn't be able to get access to uh to a pitch um and like I suppose you would have been used to that sort of a backward setup going back say years but say Ellie in your case like on teams you've been playing on um but since you started have facilities been an issue even for say you're just your new generation sorry yeah I'm not saying you're old but just you know well yeah like as it outside there like every year our um training nights we're always like Tuesday is where like just purely due to pitches we have to change it's Wednesday's there early in the year because they actually just couldn't have been got like as she said like we'd be sitting waiting meant to have a match that evening and then we get a message it's called off like there's no pitch so it is hard like it is hard for teams to be able to progress when that is the standard and you know what the standard is for the lads like as you said a lads teams team wouldn't really suffer from it and in terms of access to final then do you guys have access to final is that a ridiculous question to ask no I don't think we have we haven't had it this year anyway and I don't think we've had a jet have we Anna don't think so no we played one match there like even for the county grounds we haven't played the county grounds this year either I think we were hoping for the double header and in dr kollong but it didn't so um I am laorda mercy on on Kathleen Mullens the 2014 county finals and I remember the first day I realized that the reason why the ladies and junior intermediate and senior fines were all on the one day was because it was the one day uh dr kollong was given um you know the women had permission permission to to use the grounds just like insane um so now I presume if we were and to um offer some balance to this I presume if the county board were here did say well um maybe the ladies teams aren't asked to contribute towards the the running of fenna or whatever the case may be but um but that would stay it in the absolute obvious if you guys had access to regular a regular pitch and the same way that every county team does that would can only benefit you right yeah 100 I think we had like we had milford for a long time which was really good because it was like a base for us and we we knew where we were and we knew where we were going all the time so it was really good because you could plan right well the guards in Dublin knew where it had to go and do you know because there's some guards that are traveling from Dublin brain and like they're literally I suppose like they don't know whether they're going to have to go to kollong or said they don't know whether to go to have to go to their oak to ride it and tunnel you know so it's just um when we had the structure there of them and for they suppose it was just a lot better for um most I felt true last year happened what happened what happened there I probably should know this I'm not too sure that I've been honest it just I'm not too sure I think it was something to do with the county boards I knew it with with the pitch bush we haven't been there since now so yeah well it was a lot easier when we had a pitch that we knew we had kind of was our kind of home pitch today nearly so yeah it's unfortunate now I've been honest that is that that is not um how is the rest of the year shaping up is like are you still um have you taken a couple of weeks off or what's what's the plan for next two weeks and well we're on a two week break now at the minute we're going back Friday and after the league and then we're our length the championship actually starting on this sunday so we have that then for the next kind of month and a half or so and then we'll move into the all island series right up until August where we hopefully play in crow park full yeah it's a long season like we've been training since November but um it's on it's the here and the back of next up there at the the tarts of um a carlo footballer speaking with such confidence about playing in crow park as if it was just kind of expected which is great um you know usually it's uh usually it's up so what you hear and for those people who would be taking into the left wing back for the first time and seeing you guys maybe uh being introduced for the first time um let's talk to us about championship structure um who do you meet what's the uh many games might you have to play to get the crow park what's the that's what the structure um so a lenster championship we have um we start out this sunday and then it goes till the fifth of the fifth of may we play for Kenny we've longed for then in between and loud so then the 19th of May is the lenster final and then the second of June then starts off their all Ireland series now we have London from Anna Sligo and Derry in that group um so it is pretty tough group like Romana will be probably looking to um to back on us you know and Sligo coming down nice and more than any so definitely and so you're so you're you're guaranteed to play in ball competitions which is yeah yeah they're like nearly two separate competitions they were like really the lenster championship but then everyone kind of has has um everyone else obviously then the all Ireland series then it's totally different so everyone's back in like there's no knockouts or anything like that so yeah pretty much pretty um I have to ask you then about um your teammates as well um I think there's there's a set and it was really um obvious at the academy today it was um everybody knew somebody connected to the team and everybody wanted to mention that person and now thankfully there wasn't a whole anyway long story short um you you look like on an every interview I've seen and in pictures and things that go up you genuinely look like a really close-knit bunch is that like is that the case or is there uh is it the case of the results have um put smiles on faces or what's the what's the group like Gatorv you can take it wait I think we've all just at this point like being true the complete highs and lows getter like we really just bonded even over the last few weeks like I think it kind of took the likes of the Ferman of game there early in the season where we came back from 14 points then it's after porting this kind of like a bit of a belief in the team and everyone just has each other's backs like we know no matter what team is who's playing like everyone's just so supportive of each other like obviously I'll be one of the youngest in the panel I'm like there's everyone just getting on like so well can just walk up time on we're all like a big family really it's great has that always been the case it is enough he come to me for that one yeah I know it probably hasn't it hasn't I suppose over over the last few years like sure you know yourself you'll have club rivalries if you'll have different things going on but at the end of the day when you come to Jersey I suppose and um everyone comes in and you have the same goal so you all want to progress then and do you don't get to crow park and so like I think it's kind of left you maybe there might be one or two kind of things throughout the year but like it's left on the pitch or something and train or anything like that be left on the pitch and everyone knows anyway like it's only you know like any tackles going anything like that like it's it's only nearly for the better team you know and there's nothing personal in any of it for and for this year I think and I suppose we're just we've 25 this year where we'd 40 last year so I think from the start this year we were just a lot closer and you're getting to talk to everyone now because when you're 40 they're like it's hard to get around to everyone to one night but now um there's uh there's a grateful and few the younger girls as well like they're they're good they're good crack and they're bringing great freshness I suppose as well like you know so so it's really good yeah and right so in every group every football team there's ever been there's always somebody who's going to be late who's the late person guaranteed on the and on the panel maybe only a hundred percent this year she said a good reason she won the ones coming from Dublin or something or is she just going to be late yeah and talk to me then um what's the one that used to have on soccer and the joker in the pack who's the who's the kind of uh not the class clown who's the one who's going to say the thing they shouldn't have said or who's that person and i don't know uh Katie is definitely this year she's just so funny uh she could come out with anything at army stage so she she's probably the joker that the group now this year anyway and then who's a manager's pet i don't have to do is the manager's pet there's always a manager's pet really she's she needs so who you're saying no route she any said room sorry they um they yeah um when we were say we uh people don't believe this i was part of a county minor panel one time um actually la your dad was a manager that might expand why i was um even louder than the panelist but um uh we had a lad who shall remain nameless who on any given night would go around and when your back was turned shortly in the back um and not like not messing like put you on the ground um so use a joker in the pack in terms of kind of banter what is there uh is there an unfilled messer is there someone who um could turn around and um stick the ball over the wrong bar or something like that um no sera died it just kind of be messed around our right between sliding tackles and soccer things and stuff like that now i don't know if i go as far as putting the ball over already after this and already after this in Berlin he is now she even coming up to big games i can nearly have to be like now stop she's take two legs off someone and stay with sinead Hayden it's pretty much the same they're gasser and Eve Murphy as well they're they're just um they are unfilled messers they have to say who's the fittest player on the panel oh god um trying to take my back to the fitness test probably sera which is sera died yeah yeah that's sera over this way in Clamour yeah yeah that wasn't surprising um and i want to ask who's the least fit that wouldn't be very fair question um what about fat who's the fastest who wins all the sprints sera died all right yeah all rights was fired oh she's rapping yeah Rachel is there right here yeah and then um when it comes to a night out so say the celebrations there after winning the division four comes to a night out first lady on the dance floor maybe it did and jeez um it was the first time trying to sing yeah who even was it oh it's probably few with the younger ones i'd say and i right and they weren't either okay and then i'll go on land the same kind of team then if you're having a gym session or is there um dressing before the matches or tunes anyone in charge of chains oh yeah great chills in the dressing room we have a little like team song this year is uh and what's that one uh sunshine my girl like house you played every time before macho we're not playing the macho in the middle of where you make snow it's not like put it on me give us a few bars over there i don't we don't we don't know oh god remember when the platform uh Anthony rainbow took over the the lads team back in 2013 remember it was uh thunderstruck was the um was a big one that that doesn't feature for you guys no that's in the play a little bit earlier go away is it you don't have time to fail that's one of the classics and then is there um okay one of the other ones you used to do the best answer is there a best answer it varies l.a. it should be you with all your stage how you showing an aller correct and uh bernie kind that was good to bernie bernie it's right perfect and say that i have a member of the circuit so it's not six seeing you in the foundry that's it you weren't bad fairness oh my god no around knows this uh and then i think this is a fair one to do with lads but it we'll show it out there um best dress sense oh what stylish maybe is a nicer one's pattern Anna is pretty stylish now she's always lovely runner and runner uh i only ever seen her like jerry's even sure he's looking so jerry's been charged when you come in from the restroom anyway if you're going by runners that always has a good pair of runners on her she gets out in the motor and and then like i have a vision of like women arriving with um like a boop bag like a louis baton boop bag or something that kind of crack doesn't go on no and all now there might be a few with a few nice little hair brushes and a little bag now packed in and a few bits and pieces and that i will hear glued you know the mascara is for the hair and and bits and pieces like that what you know we carry the gear by i interviewed uh mary and dial um from micha for them i forget whether it was county mike coogie or mike coogie but they were winning something anyway and interviewed her and i asked about superstitions and one of the things they used to do back then was um we're gonna get the name wrong was a french platt or oh wait are you twisted hair over and stuff but like so if i remember correctly they showed like some girls would only go to so like say if it was you to Ella would only get her hair platted by edel and vice-versa because they did it the first day and the one so they kept it so the same person would do it um so like is there anyone superstitious or does anyone have a does everyone sit in the same place in the dressing room those kind of things uh anything that stands out i know and wrote a knee forward sit together i think that's the thing is when the kind of uh not super setting to a bit too superstitious maybe that way and then it's actually funny just because my bobbin and this is only from my experience of it and um i thought the pink bobbin in playing one day and we joined well and i was like it's the pink bobbin and i just had the head so everything came since i wore the pink bobbin just in case yeah and how about you Ella any uh any superstitions or things that should that are no i don't think so i i thought now it was my boost coming off this season i was like i've had the same they're based on and then just before the final i based actually first on me and the whole week i was like oh my god like we're gonna be too long about thank god we still won so i don't think that's the one uh it was a james claire i think used to wear claire he used to wear nine pairs of socks and now i was in position whether maybe he just taught he kicked the ball for it or i don't know but uh i don't think i get nine pairs of socks on me uh on my feet that's on the side um and then uh talked to me then about um we mentioned about the who did you say it was this was the neve meve meve so who's who's first to show up every trainer obviously he had but of the players and then we're i'd say yeah definitely she just seen the type she yeah although i do see her she she um she works there in town and i i do see her swan around now at three o'clock of an afternoon so i she's yeah she has time to be there early that's uh um that's great okay um so then we have to give as was the management team credit talk to us so ed is obviously the the the boss um talk to us about the the backroom team um is it uh is it very much a collective or does ed drive the the whole thing himself talk to us about that uh start with you with elle um so yeah there's edge yeah well he kind of took more not like he kind of sits back and watches a lot more this year um so it's kevin that takes us mostly for the forwards coaching and then she needs as well so between the two of them like we'd kind of be doing drills with with them and then games now ed had to have his input all right he'd be in and out like two words and saying what he wants and what he doesn't want like to back them forwards and then um john then is the goalie coach as well and then we have shawn who is strength and condition so he's always there as well and then louis just starts and then we were physio as well so okay so um between the all and then bernie is like the mommy then as well going around making sure would be lost without bernie so we would legend there is and um not to keep having back to do all this right i'm forgive me for this but i think it's important when you when you first came on the um carlosine like i'm i'm assuming the idea of having a stats person would have been just unexistent yeah i think i was soon and today was was um dara wants and he was saying the same kind of question to me like and i just said back then like you just it was even so much as bringing your boots in a plastic bag like you know and your and you go into the restroom and you'll be sitting and i just remember christine john like been such a role model for me and like to like me and tomorrow was playing a chime and maggy jil and there was loads of them new jobs there and like you were kind of going in and you're just going into town and put your head down there you know because there are the periods here and um i suppose it's after coming up so much it just all the training to be if you just going training under the one person and going home and training hard i'd say but now it's like there's just so much difference even in the last year just stay with trackers and you know strength conditioning and and stats and there's just so many different things like now towards years ago so it's after like the ladies game has come on so much and especially in the last couple of years and like it's great to see you know it's it's amazing and just a professional setup as well to be in after being probably not having that for so long like it's only really the last couple of years that we have had it so yeah it's a massive change i'm real so then like you've obviously you're come into a state last three years and um sort of getting that from from the world goal can you it's not really a fair question to ask you but can you kind of appreciate um the level of professionalism that's there or does it and and don't come around it should be the norm and absolutely it's not but when you hear it they're talking about you know um one person doing the train and then you know coming with a plastic boots in a plastic bag like does that seem like a like age of history well obviously even coming like from underage it was the same like one or two people train me and like it's such a huge step up then to like a panel of management and then like all the technology and all we're obviously using now like i remember one of my first training sessions i walked in there was having a track and a clue what they thought a tracker was but like this it's kind of the way we need to be doing like using their age years progress but it is great like it's unreal to have the facilities as well and like we don't we've lost the right them because like it's just such a good support for us but yeah as you said like it should be the norm for us so it is unreal that we even have the time to use them yeah yeah yeah like i i remember um uh talking to the likes of um Colin Byrne and um Brian Smith and the two with the Raphael Edsman and they were involved with the county minor in 2015 and um it was a parishion call night like freeze and call night and i was picking them up and the body was recognized i was only a selector so i'd written Raphael as the train and that i should have been next to you but that's near here there but um uh i remember picking the lads up and it was just one that anyway and they were given out to think about uh having the train and the call and uh whatever and uh but the difference so we were going down to fenna and to these pitches that were you know pretty much you can play the module around and um floodlights and all this and you know back to time when i was on the county minor panel uh it was like that some some weeks you train in pal some weeks you um you train in whatever pitch was uh was available but it was part of the management's job to uh probably spend most of the week bringing around training in the pitch so to have that taken out the equation out across the board um is great um but then you guys still have that that issue of uh of local pitches which is it still makes it hard for you to be as professional as the male counterparts and yet you're the ones who've had the success this year and you know we obviously want to wish the lads well but um you know it it hasn't gone well for them uh this year so um maybe i'll be the first to make the case as a race where we'll give give you guys fenna for the rest of the year and the lads can lads come around looking for the pitches like you know um but um yeah so looking forward to um back to the rest of the year so did you say it's um you've took any first no we've loud first so what is this weekend yeah and we've loud at home it's not so bad we've loud at home then we have long for the way then we've clicked any at home so we've two home and one away which isn't bad and how how will how we fix for loud is uh you kind of had a two-week break so that like first we're back on Friday and straight into the game does that kind of uh this sort of well i suppose it's in a very tight season and even year in general so like we need obviously need a two-week break after like it's in a long time since November we'll get into that league final so like it's obviously not ideal that we're only coming back two days of format but there's honestly nothing we can do like it is a long time now until the middle of july when we're still paying challenges so we'll just hope our adrenaline rush is going to take us right to it but i suppose and but the way the structure is it like it's not okay it's not knockout so um and it's uh you still have a long you're you're still at least what five six matches left in the in the season so if you were to try and win division four and just back and try and choose the night you're probably born girls out in sports i yeah 100 like i think we had seven like seven games in eight weeks is the last and we need a smaller panelist 25 we're trying to keep everyone right as well and keep everyone injury free and i think we well needed the break now there was probably a run sent out this week now beforehand so it's not as if we're we're sitting high to not neither is it both and we're going oh yeah yeah i'm sure you did and that's what the trackers are far you say we can't guy with them now we might even hear years ago right now everything is tracked and recorded so i'm really um and then so so loud first and then that so that kind of get your um up a running in championship and talk to me about how the the teams in the group rate where i have a one division four are you guys kind of expected to do well in that group or are you up against i remember going into a game in 2014 2015 and and loud giving carlo and naf are going over but it's has the the gap closed there somewhat or talk to me about that um i think loud like obviously they're coming down from intermediate back down to junior so they're going to want to set a standard like the polls from the game on sunday or compared other to win the game you know what they're going to want to go straight back up this year i suppose like sligo and in in the all Ireland series as well the two with those come down but suppose i would look if we perform and play well there's no reason why we can't beat them you know and and long for them we drew so in the league like which we probably underperformed that day as well like so there's nothing saying we can't like you know we can't be there i think it's tough to go straight through a final i don't think they're semi-final so we'll probably just take one game as a converse you know and like we have done all year and see how it goes after sunday then exit exit and with the with the young um the younger uh players are part of the panel is there a certain amount of um or is there is there a kind of like a baggage you know sometimes if you if you have a panel that have been there true um like a baronnie or say and there's nearly a field of not deserving success is there a good cohort to use there that they nearly it's like uh not a cockiness but or not a not um like an assertiveness or like a carefree sense of of just the not no fear of losing i suppose that the way to phrase it yeah i suppose look i look at me coming in like just day against vermanen and the last day again slimrick and like just i suppose i was just thinking after if that was me that had a gotha involved it's probably where she did i probably would have drove them widely you know because you're just probably though what she just comes in and she's just how they can be so composed but probably so carefree they're just going to play football they're going to play it if nothing kind of hanging or or hanging over them and as you have said like so the guard's just coming and gets stuck in straight away don't ever like even yourself they're like Ellen just comes in and she just gets like i think you had to mark
