Morning strikes kill dozens in Gaza and US vetoes ceasefire resolution
This is trending your daily rundown of news from the Middle East and around the world brought to you by The National. From Abu Dhabi, I'm Yasmine Altaji, here are today's headlines. Israeli airstrikes on northern Gaza killed at least 66 people and wounded more than 100 on Thursday morning, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency. Obviously, women and children were killed with strikes destroying an entire residential block near Kamala-Dwan Hospital in Beit-La Jia. Many people are still missing, according to Gaza's civil defense. At least five homes were destroyed in the attack. The U.S. Senate voted to block three resolutions that would have halted the transfer of some U.S. weapons to Israel. All the votes in favor came from the Democratic caucus, while votes against came from both Democrats and Republicans. Other resolutions were not expected to pass. And at the U.N., the U.S. vetoed a Security Council resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. Robert Wood, Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., said Washington had made it clear it would only support a resolution that called for the immediate release of hostages as part of a ceasefire deal. Let me say this clearly. There are still seven American citizens in the hands of Hamas. We will not forget them. It was the sole veto, and as a permanent member of the council, a U.S. veto blocks a resolution entirely. That's all for this morning's headlines.
