[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Welcome in everyone to another edition of the GSMC College Football podcast brought to you by the GSMC Sports Network. I'm your host as always, Tommy Brzee. It is Thursday, November 20th, 21st around here and we have a great show for you today. We got to start talking about the big time game going on in Columbia, Columbus, Ohio, excuse me. Indiana, Ohio State, a huge game this upcoming weekend that has gotten twitter very, very mad over the last couple of days. Then we'll get into a couple of SEC games that might be a little bit upset already. We had Ole Miss going to Gainesville for a big game against Florida as well as A&M going to Jordan Hare at night to play Auburn, two huge games that could totally shake up the CFP race. Then we'll get to the 12 team playoff, talk about some of the consequences that are starting to show from the 12 team, obviously nothing that is too too aggressive, but definitely some things to be on the lookout for for the next couple of weeks and really the next couple of years in college football. Then we'll get to a week 13 whip around. We'll get to all the top 25 teams, not quite all of them, but a lot of the big time games that you're going to want to be watching for this upcoming weekend. Definitely a ton of them including Miami trying to bounce back after a bi-week. Then we'll get to my hot takes around the playoff. I have a ton of different ones including one around the auto buy system that I think we just probably need to do away with it, but we'll get into that all at the end of the show. Definitely stick around for that, but before we jump in, I do want to remind you all, we get tons of questions and comments throughout the show. And the best way for you all to get your question on the screen, we can have a fun back and forth here, is to use the super chat. At the bottom of the chat on the sports network page, you can click the dollar sign and add any question, comment you'd like. It'll pop up on the screen and we can have a fun back and forth here. Definitely want this to be as interactive as possible. So utilize that as you please. Also, gsmcpodcast.net is still up and running does the exact same thing. So either one of those you'd like to use, please do and we can have a fun back and forth here. But let's go ahead and jump into this one. We have Indiana at Ohio State. We finally have the game that everyone's been talking about, like it's already happened for some reason. But let's start, let's start here before we get into any of the craziness of the actual game. I feel like I don't have an actual line of demarcation for Indiana. I can't tell you that if they lose by 15 plus, or if they lose by 20 plus, or if they lose by 24 plus, that they should definitely be out. I think I just have to see the game play out. See what the game flow is, see how they look against the athletes of Ohio State, see how their defensive line looks against a banged up offensive line, which we'll get to here in a second. We'll have to see all of that unfold. I can't say, you know, if they lose by 15 plus, I thought about saying, you know, if they lose by two or more scores, that'll be about it for me. I don't think that's really fair. I want to see how this plays out. I want to see what Indiana has on Saturday. And then on Monday, I'm more than happy to give you my full breakdown, my full take about what I think Indiana should be. So I will get to that no doubt about it. I will let you know on Monday, if I think they should be a playoff team, as of right now, I think they should be it could change on Saturday. It could change in the right direction. I can think they should definitely be so we'll battle back and forth on that on Monday no doubt about it. But let's get to the game because I feel like a lot of people have almost forgotten that this is a game that is going to be played on the field, which sounds crazy. I know. But at the end of the day, it's going to be really, really fun to watch him. The biggest news out there is Seth McLaughlin, the very talented center for Ohio State is out for the year with the Tony Killies. He toured earlier this week in practice, a huge loss for this team. This was an all American talent type player at center. You might remember him from Alabama last year had some snap troubles throughout the back end of the year. Still was a fantastic player for Alabama and has been just remarkable for Ohio State, a huge piece in the run game, which we'll get to here in a second and a ton of different stuff. So a huge loss. No doubt about it. The second starter that has gone down. They also lost their backup left tackle. So they've played around with a lot of stuff. Donovan Jackson kicked from left guard over to left tackle has done a relatively good job considering that move. And now you're gonna have to play around with stuff once again. Carson Hinsman is the guy that I'm watching most closely. He was at left guard. I believe he's going to kick over to center and probably play that center position and Luke Montgomery will slide into that left guard. I can't confirm that but by looking at their depth chart that's how I feel this would probably go. I'll obviously update you guys tomorrow if there's any news on that today but definitely the way that I would assume it would go but yet another switch around for that Ohio State offensive line and yet another shift for a player possibly with Carson Hinsman going from left guard back over to center. So definitely something to watch and for Indiana that bodes well because they can really stop the run. They're second in the country and run defense giving up under 80 yards per game. They're to be fair. This is by far the best running back duo that they're going to have but if that O line does give them the opening they will take it in roll with it. No doubt about that but then on the other side you do have Curtis Rourke. Curtis Rourke just has to roll in this game and I can promise you we will get to the Joey Galloway take a little bit later in the show but crazy but we will get to that big thing about this is Curtis Rourke has to play the best game and he's played it in Indiana. He has to play as elite as he has really ever played football if I'm being totally honest. He's going to Columbus he's playing in a huge game that could send them to the CFP could knock them out hypothetically. He's got to play elite football. This is why he came to Indiana. He knew that this game was on the schedule and this is going to be a special moment for him. No doubt about it but he's got to show up in a big way and a big reason he does is while they have the second best run defense Ohio State sits at fourth so it's not like Ohio State's very far behind him. They are very very good and they're plenty good on the back end but they're really really good against the run. They are one of the best teams in the country and when you have those guys on the outside like Elijah Sarat like Miles Price like Omar Cooper Jr it might just be a better idea to see what you can do against this back end and kind of let your run game. I don't want to say take a back seat you definitely will need it throughout this game but definitely let it be a supplemental piece in this game. Use those big time pass plays that you've been able to find and use some of those one-on-one matchups that honestly might favor you in some certain situations that we can break down throughout this but on the other side you do have Will Howard. I think he's played really really solid football all year has had kind of some of those goofs as people like to call them a couple of mistakes here and there that have put them in kind of precarious situations including in that organ game where the last play of the game made a mistake and obviously led to them losing. He has played very very good though. He has played very very good football very solid. The thing is you're probably going to have to kick it up a notch especially with the offensive line going down especially with them kind of having to kick guys around the quarterback run game is going to be a bigger part of this offense going forward. If I had to imagine I do think they're going to attack that a little bit more aggressively and he's going to have to step up to the plate. He's going to have to be the guy that they brought him in to be and he was in the Penn State game for much of that game. He's going to have to be again on Saturday and really going for the rest of the season. One big stat to watch before we jump into the keys to the game one big stat to watch could be red zone efficiency. Ohio State is number two in the country in red zone offense their number two and red zone defense they're actually the best in the country and then Indiana they're actually number one in red zone offense but they're 74th in red zone defense. Could that be the difference here where you have one Ohio State drive that's finished off with seven points you have an Indiana drive that comes up with nothing and that's the difference in the game. That's definitely something that could happen but it's going to be really fun partly because we won't really know the effects of it until 72 hours after but it's going to have an impact. No doubt about that and we'll see what happens to Indiana, to Tennessee, to Notre Dame, to all of the teams that are going to be watching this very very closely and we'll see what happens but a couple of players to watch. I think just as Ellison this is probably your game. Obviously you're going to be able to run the ball quite as efficiently as you would like because not many people can do that against Ohio State. That being said you have two very good back. You have just as Ellison you have Tyson Lawton and I think both those guys can get downhill they can play really physical they can play against guys that are on the other sideline in Ohio State. I think you have a guy here that maybe your run game is not going to be the marquee part of this game and it probably shouldn't be if you're Indiana but you need to get enough. I think just Ellison's one of those guys that can fall forward that can give you four yards when you blocked for two or give you three yards when you blocked for one and that's kind of the difference in a game like this where it's just really margins and inches that will give you this win or loss. And then Mike Elcomara when he saw that news that Seth McLaughlin went down I have to imagine his mouth started watering because this dude is going to go to work on Saturday. He is one of the best D linemen not only on Indiana not only in the Big Ten but in the country. He's been absolutely incredible has rushed the passer very well but also can be a force inside an incredible incredible player that absolutely can make Ohio State pay especially with that offensive line struggling wouldn't be surprised if number six was just all over the field on the defensive side of the ball for Indiana. And then we got to talk about Carson Hinsman when you are put in this situation you officially are put on a huge huge stage whether or not he plays center or guard. I'm not sure where he's going to play. I would assume center but we'll see what happens there definitely going to be interesting to watch him regardless. He's going to be huge. They need a guy in the middle that can really be that enforcer. We talked about earlier in the year actually when we talked about Alabama Tyler Booker went out and it's happened with Georgia actually with Tate Radledge. You need a guy in the middle that can be an enforcer in the run game. You need a guy that can get that push whether it's a guard or a center they had it in Seth McLaughlin they had two guys in Carson Hinsman and Tigre Shubula that are both kind of really solid guys they need that enforcer again and it's going to probably have to be Carson Hinsman and we'll have to see what happens with him but it's going to be a huge game on Saturday and really the rest of the season for this guy and then Denzel Burke we talked about it with Indiana. They have some dudes on the outside. They have dudes that absolutely can do one-on-ones with some of these quarterbacks for Ohio State so they're going to have to show up. Denzel Burke and Noah or Davison A. Benose and all these guys are going to have to be big-time players and this is the moment to do it no doubt about that but some keys to the game. Indiana you got to ignore the noise. This weekend's this week has been absolutely insane. People are talking about you don't belong the playoff. People are saying that you aren't that good. People are saying that you haven't played anyone block all that out. Just play the game in front of you play as good as you possibly can and let the chips fall where they will. You know if you lose by 14 you get left out I would not be mad at you guys for yelling and screaming and saying that it's SEC bias. On the other side of that if you lose by 21 and get left out I might not be quite as with you but I understand this will still be an incredible season just go attack Saturday. Leave all of that other stuff up to the committee and all that craziness just go take care of Saturday and probably everything else will take care of itself and then mistake free football. Giving Ohio State free possessions in this game is a loss. Plain and simple if you're going to give that Ohio State offense with all of those playmakers as many possessions as they want they're going to tear you to pieces so got to be very careful only seven turnovers on the year four INTs from Curtis Rourke they should be fine in that category but definitely the best defense that they've played thus far and the best at getting turnovers for sure and then a four quarter performance. This is going to be the toughest game they've played from a physical perspective. There's going to be a fourth quarter unlike any that they played all year because the body's going to hurt just a little bit more so they have to be able to fight through the clock when the clock hits zero because the reality is this one's going to hurt just a little bit more than some of those other games that you've played and then for Ohio State it's then the run game just a little bit. I don't think they necessarily have to totally get away from it but you are down to a lot starters on the offensive line you are going up against a very stout run defense spread it out a little bit get some pitches get some screens some different things to just get your playmakers on the outside and that's actually my other key just let your playmakers go there are so many different things that these guys can do in open space where you don't have to have well how we're throwing the ball 40 yards downfield you don't have to have anything outright special just let your guys go to work get them out on the edge very quickly and then let your guys make plays in the open space they usually can make those plays and then finally i would trust your front in this game i think indian is a very good team i think they're a very solid offense running the balls not necessarily their strong suit 60 seconds in the country and yards per game the offensive line is solid not necessarily elite by any means i think you just trust your front to take care of business there and then stop the big plays on the back end that could totally change this game if i had to imagine with all the guys they have on that back end so it's going to be a huge game over there in columbus one of the biggest games in indiana football history that is the losing is football program and football in college football history but i think it's going to be another loss on saturday i would love to be sitting here and telling you that i think indiana is going to win but i do think i i ohio state wins 35 34 17 i think it's going to be a fight though i really do think this is one of those games where ohio state maybe scores a touchdown with four or five minutes left takes it to 17 and never really looks back but i do think it's going to get interesting and i do think i'm going to be sitting here on monday just wracking my brain trying to figure out if i think indiana or tennessee should be in that thing but we'll see what happens on monday we'll see what happens on saturday and we'll break it all down on monday so definitely tune in for that but let's take our first break here and when we come back we got to talk about omus florida we got to talk about a&m auburn a couple of upset alerts in the scc and we'll break them down right after this breaking news coming in from bet 365 where every nail biting overtime win breakaway pick six three point shot underdog win buzzer beater shoot out walk off and absolutely every play in between is amazing from football the basketball and hockey to people very angry before the game's even been played so we will definitely break it down on monday let you know exactly what I think about indiana I will let you know if they are a playoff team or not in my mind on monday cannot do that until I see this game unfold but let's get into a couple sec games because we got quite a few upside alerts all across the sec right about now but let's get into these two because I think they stand out a little bit above the bunch and we'll start with this one old miss goes on the road to florida where the cfp hopes of lsu came to an end it is the graveyard of those cfp hopes for lsu and now old miss is going to try to at least get it done uh the good news for them is the sun will be shining for this one it will not be at night you will avoid the swamp at night which even jordan wackens admitted is a very big deal for this team so a huge game definitely one that i'm very much looking forward to and the big news is dj lagway has arrived you if you watch that game on saturday against lsu you came away thinking the world of that kid because the throw that he made to Elijah badger is not a normal throw by any means that being said it is going to be a much better defense on the other side is going to be much better deline on the other side and old miss and he's gonna have to use that momentum from last week and really start playing free just play with confidence and really with florida state on the docket i hate to say this even with florida state but you're probably okay you probably can lose this game so i would attack go full throw trust yourself rip the ball around the field and frankly when he does that a lot of good things happen and the other good news on the other side is old miss is getting care Harris back for this game after the bi-week he is fully healthy finally and this is a huge deal not only for this week but really going forward for the cfp hopes they definitely need that guy on the field and we'll see what happened i believe henry pears will be back for this game as well if that's going to be one of the players we talk about here in a second but definitely going to be something to watch can tray Harris have the effect is he back to 100 percent is he still a little bit gimpy out there or is he back running and if he is then florida is going to have their hands full no doubt about that the d-line for florida needs to get home there's no doubt about that you haven't uh jackson dart uh jackson dart is a incredibly good player and really will pick you apart if you allow him the time to do it no doubt about that so you got to go uh get him and if you can't really go after him if you can't get to the quarterback then your offense has to go punch for punch with one of the best offenses in the country that is not what you want to do by any means even if you had let's say it's a dj it's a texas florida type game but you have dj lagway on the field you'd have to score 50 points in that game if you wanted to win this so it was going to be very tough in that one it would be very tough in this one if their defense played to that same level obviously has gotten better has gotten a couple of guys back so very different situation but definitely something to watch where if they can't get home it might just be a shootout that florida has to win but it's going to be a really interesting game because if florida can throw that first punch what happens to old miss that's kind of my biggest question here if florida hits that first big pass play over the middle and Elijah badger scores a touchdown early on in this game does old miss get a little bit worried does old miss start to really miss think and start to uh second guess themselves or are they able to kind of keep their minds clear attack what's in front of them and take care of business it's going to be an awesome game to watch and jane baugh is going to be an awesome player to watch in it he obviously had the big play against lsu one of the cooler moments in swamp history really as far as i'm concerned very very cool moment and jane baugh is one of those players that continues to play really good football him and dj lagway have a lot of florida fans incredibly excited about 2025 and they very much should these are very fun players and i think jane baugh is going to be one of those guys against a team like old miss where you're gonna have to get the run game going one way or the other you can't afford to have nothing on the ground especially against this d-line and then just hope that dj lagway can make every single play you need your running back to help out and jane baugh is probably going to be the main guy there shimor james the linebacker for florida was incredible last week one scc defensive player of the year and was just all over the field and especially as you get into this back half where so many of the guys contributing so many of the guys putting things on the field are young guys or transfers or pieces that are not necessarily quite as familiar with what florida is shimor james is he knows exactly what this florida team is about knows exactly what this university is about he needs to be on tachmo for the rest of the season if he can finish this thing seven and five and possibly leave the florida program much better than he found it it's going to be an incredible incredible accomplishment for him and definitely a moment on saturday where he can string together two incredible wins to finish off his college career then he got him reparish a really good running back for old miss when they didn't have one the last couple of weeks and you're gonna have to find the run game in this one jackson dart being the leading rusher in this game is not necessarily a path to victory at least in maybe maybe you can get it done in this game you probably won't be able to get it done in some of those big time games coming up hopefully so you're gonna need him reparish to get going you're gonna need him to get his feet under him and really take over this offense in some ways and it's going to be a tall order no doubt about that and then princely oh man me ellen he is going back home he's coming he came over from florida too old miss this past off season he's gonna go back home and i can't imagine the reception's gonna be very nice i'll be totally honest with you it's gonna be pretty aggressive but at the same time he's got a job to do he's got to get after dj lagway pretty aggressively and if he can then i wouldn't be surprised if we saw a couple of mistakes a couple of uh miscues from the young kid because he used some terrifying edge rushers on the old miss side and then for the the keys to the game line of scrimmage battle is gonna be fascinating to watch the florida o-line is up for a battle against one of the best d-lines in the country and then on the other side you do have a old miss o-line that is relatively solid they can be had in different times but they looked very stout against georgia so you're gonna have to fight through that we'll see if florida can kind of match them at that point and really win the day in some ways of with their d-line against their o-line because that's probably the match up that you have at least some ability to take advantage of and then explosive pass plays both these teams love to push the ball down the field both these quarterbacks are very good at pushing the ball down the field so chunk plays are going to be a huge part of this game which defense can eliminate them which offense can get more of them might just be the decider in this one it might just be 50 yard touchdowns back and forth and we just have to figure out who gets the last one and then finally the florida energy it is back if they were first part of that season when you saw the miami game and you saw miami go up about by 17 or 20 points the fan base went quiet that entire thing was absolutely silent in the miami fans with the loud ones in there that is not going to happen on Saturday even if they go down by a little bit even if they fall back i think these fans got a spark last week and i don't think it's going to leave them for the rest of the season so regardless of if this one is at noon or at night this place is going to be loud i can promise you that nomas is going to have to handle all that noise and i think it's going to be a really fun game i think they're in a battle tooth and nail and i think florida has a lot of gas in the tank i just think this defense is too good i think old miss is going to be able to do enough i don't think it's going to look all that pretty throughout this game if i'm being totally honest but i do think the old miss defense is probably a little bit too much for the freshman quarterback i think florida keeps it interesting probably late into this game but old miss score the touchdown goes up by nine and calls it a day uh right there so going to be a fascinating game but i think the old miss defense is just a little bit too much for florida here and then we got a huge one in jordan hair at night this time four texas a&m and it's going to be a nightmare there's no doubt about that a&m has zero wiggle room before they get to that sec title game they need to win on saturday they need to beat texas next week and based on mike elko's press conference might be a little bit too focused on texas right about this moment but auburn's not necessarily a special team uh by any means they have made a number of mistakes they've missed out on a lot of opportunities the thing is when you watch this team and they don't turn the ball over which tends to be a relatively tall ass for this team but let's just say they don't turn the ball over on saturday it's a very solid team there i believe top 40 in total defense top uh 25 i believe in total offense i could have those numbers a little bit off but they're a very solid team they just turn the ball over they just hand the ball away way too often to the other team if they can avoid that on saturday especially a saturday night game in jordan hair it's going to get loud in a hurry and it's going to be really aggressive and i think this is going to be a very very tight game so if they can avoid those mistakes if they can avoid those little things and frankly coming into this season i looked at this auburn team and said probably not a team that's going to be a real danger in the sec but i think they have one in them i think they have that one game i think they have that one performance that totally turns the turns the heads of people in they got two more chances to do it a&m and then alabama next week we'll see what happens there and we'll see if they can get this huge win and definitely set themselves up for big success in 2025 because it feels like kind of like florida going into last week they're just waiting for that big last spark this could be the week that you get it and then the auburno line uh has played a great game or either they're gonna have to play a great game excuse me for them to get this one done because the passport is absolutely for real and if you give if you get to uh patreon the mistakes are going to come shortly after that has been studied time and time again and if you can get after this quarterback he is going to make a couple of mistakes and he's going to hand you the ball a couple of times so the auburno line probably has to be your best game of the year there's a very aggressive defensive line and they're going to come after you really aggressively you've got to give this guy time so he can go through his reads and not have to force balls because then you're in trouble um a&m just win by one point i plain and simple do not make this pretty you don't need to make this pretty it can be as ugly as slow as boring as you possibly needed to be just get the win keep moving forward and next week and then try to get that one and see if you can go to the sec title but a couple of players to watch cam Coleman if you saw the catch last week you know why i'm talking about this guy he is absolutely incredible one of the best athletes in the entire country and he's going to be one of those guys that no matter who you put him on in on saturday you're going to feel pretty good about that matchup there's obviously some incredible uh dbs on the a&m side but at the end of the day this kid's different in every way you just put it around him and he's probably going to catch that ball so he's one of those players that in the game like this where you're outmatched in a lot of different areas sometimes you just need a freak sometime you just need that one guy to make that one play down the stretch of this game and i wouldn't be surprised if cam Coleman made that play and then you do have kelric fall uh the d alignment for auburn they're gonna have to get after the quarterback in this one you have such a talented such a mobile quarterback and marcell reed if you have a d line that is very athletic like auburn's is you should be able to slow him down that being said it's obviously going to take very good play from all these d linemen they're gonna have to really get out on the edge jayla mccloyd and another one to watch they're gonna have to really get out on the edge and make sure that this quarterback run game is not a huge factor because especially without labion moss you take that quarterback run game away there's a relatively i don't want to say benign but a relatively normal rush offense not necessarily elite not necessarily bad but not necessarily at the level that it had been with labion moss if you can take away the quarterback run a lot of things open up in a hurry and then amari daniel so the running back for a&m he's picked up the slack in a lot of different ways since labion moss went down and he's gonna have to do it even more than he has in the past on saturday no doubt about that he's gonna have to be a huge player and definitely be a guy that i don't want to say takes over the game but them keeping the ball on the ground them being able to run it in between the tackles is going to be a huge part of it and amari daniels might be one of the few options ej smith obviously can get to get some carries here in terry bussy but at the end of the day this is going to be your work horseback and he's gonna have to have a big day on saturday and then willy we talked about cam coleman there's a ton of other receivers on that auburn the sideline that are going to be really tough to deal with willy's going to be the guy that has to deal with them the blanket as they call him in mani is he he's a very very good defender one of those guys that if you're lined up on him you might just not want to throw in 26th direction if i'm being totally honest but going to be a huge matchup wherever he is on the field and he could be the guy that makes that one play that really puts this auburn game in a very weird place for the tigers but some keys to the game auburn's wide receiver against anm db's these auburn wide receivers are different in every way they have so many athletes on the outside they have cayandra lambert smith who's a very more a little bit more complete receiver mal uh malcom simmons cam coleman perry tomsen it's ridiculous what they have at the wide receiver room the anm db's are plenty good as well but they're gonna have to be up for the challenge they're gonna have to make sure that they can play full coverage all the way through the through the play and play some weird coverage because sometimes that ball is just gonna get thrown up and cam coleman or if someone's just gonna have to go make a play that's when those db's could get exposed if they're a little bit off schedule if they're a little bit off kilter and these athletes just can go up and make a play and then i think uh can marcell re get running in this game is a huge part of it because this anm run game has taken a hit with labion moss going down the auburn d line is a very athletic group if they can slow down marcell ree this thing gets interesting in a hurry and you force them to pass more often not necessarily the way that they want to go about business if you're uh anm and then is there any look ahead for the agis or really for the tigers in this one are they looking ahead to those big rivalry matchups that are going on next week anm one of the biggest games in the last decade when they play texas next weekend if they were to win this game so it's going to be really interesting to watch this one unfold and i think auburn has a little bit of an opening here i just don't think they're able to walk through it i don't think there's a team that has the ability to avoid mistakes against a very good defense i think they're gonna get attacked on the offensive line and i think anm gets a win here i don't necessarily think it looks all that pretty throughout i'm gonna be totally honest i think it's a little bit of a slog fest but i think anm gets it done and i think they move forward to that huge one next week against texas would excuse me i apologize with a lot of things still on the table apologies for that but going to be an incredible couple of games to watch and cannot wait to see those on full but now let's take our second break here when we come back we got to talk about the consequences of the 12 team playoff they're starting to show laine kiffen's comments earlier this week a couple out of com out of conference scheduled things that we got to talk about so we'll break it all down right after this so stick with us breaking news and this one is almost unbelievable yeah it's all about new customers at bet 365 because on YouTube right now all righty welcome back everyone we just talked about those big games in the SCC old miss goes on the road to Florida A&M goes on the road to Auburn two really tough games that could be totally crazy with the CFP schedule that we got or the CFP race that we got going on going to be really interesting and two teams that very much want to get into that dance got to win out the rest of the way if they want to but let's get into a couple of the consequences of the 12 team playoff they're starting to show as we get down the stretch at home stretch of the season a couple of the things that people that were critics of the 12 team playoff were talking about they're starting to show just a little bit let's break it down real quickly here because I think that a lot of them are very interesting some of them are not quite a big a deal of others some of them are relatively big deals and we'll have to figure them out pretty quickly but let's go ahead and jump into this thing in we'll start with Lane Kiffin he made some comments yesterday talking about the conference title race and talking about how some coaches out there are just not very interested in the conference title because what if you do go and then you get knocked out what if you do go and you you lose by 30 points and you get knocked out for a team that has maybe less losses because they didn't have to play in that game that is something that a lot of people are worried about really across the sport I don't think that's necessarily a crazy thing to be worried about and Ward manual did not make it any easier he was asked about this at the end of the show on Tuesday I believe and he was talking about it and said we are going to evaluate teams through their conference title race how is that possible how are we allowing them to knock a team that got to the SEC title got the luxury of playing in the SEC title and then fell I never understand why we would punish those teams and frankly you really just can't do it I'm not saying that it won't happen but it kind of can't happen if it does happen let's just say that Alabama gets to the SEC title they play Texas they lose by 21 points let's just say and they drop behind Tennessee I'm telling you now the big 10 in the SEC would have their own postseason set up by March I'm just being totally honest it would be over from that moment forward it would be over the entirety of college football would change essentially overnight if you did that so they can't do that they have to I mean have to keep these teams not only do they have to keep them in the field they probably got to keep them as host teams if you make your big 10 or you make your SEC championship in probably won't be as quite a big of a problem in the big 10 likely could have been in different scenarios but as of right now it doesn't look like it's going to be too big of an issue the thing I'm wondering is I don't think you can even knock these teams out of the field I don't think you can knock them out of a host position I think you have to give everyone that played in the big 10 of the SEC championship a host position because frankly those are the two guys that can pick up their ball and go play elsewhere it's obviously not the ideal situation obviously not the way that you want to be making decisions but that's kind of the reality of this situation if you were going to knock out someone that played in the SEC championship when frankly they don't necessarily have to you're going to have a problem on your hands whether you're the CFP committee or the college football fans or the coaches or anyone it is going to be a battle back and forth I can absolutely promise you that so if Bama goes and loses to Texas or say Texas goes and loses to Bama neither of those teams can fall out if A&M goes and they lose to Bama they can't fall out as you we can argue all day whether or not they should whether or not one team is more deserving whether or not one team is better but the reality is they're playing in a game that now can only can hypothetically can do more harm to them than good and it just cannot happen we have to be able to reward these teams for making it to the conference titles especially with a lot of the issues in the conferences right now and we'll talk about that here in a second we have to give these teams host positions we just have to whether or not it's a big 10 team say you know craziness happens and Penn State makes it to the championship and gets blown out by Oregon that would be an 11 and 2 team that would not necessarily have all the wins that we would like to see them have they would still have to get in they would still have to host a playoff game because if they didn't Tony Petite's come banging down your door and they're getting together with Greg Sankey and stuff's happening in a hurry i'm just being totally honest so it's one of those situations that we could talk about the resume and we could talk about which team is better and we could talk about you know Tennessee did beat Alabama when they played them so it would be a 10 and 3 Alabama against a 10 and 2 Tennessee and i totally get the argument there the thing is you just can't do it you can't do it because it would totally change the fabric of the sport pretty much overnight you would have the big 10 and the SEC coming together in a hurry and you would have a problem on your hands pretty much by Monday after the selection Sunday so you have to be careful that's all i'm gonna say with a terrible conference format that we'll get to here right in a second it's going to be one of those things where if you earn your right into a title playoff game or into a title game excuse me you have to make the playoff period end of story frankly i don't think you should move down at all in the rankings because if you do that you have a problem on your hands that could totally change what college football is so i understand what Lane Kiffin saying and i understand why that is a worry if that is something that comes to fruition welcome to the new reality of college football which is AFC and NFC but we'll see what happens there definitely going to be something to watch and hopefully they don't punish anyone because if they do we got a problem on our hands in a hurry let's talk about that conference setup because there are some issues with it no doubt about that it is a terrible conference setup that we have right now and this is much less about the 12 team playoff more about conference realignment but it is affecting the 12 team playoff in a big time way you know you have a Tennessee team let's say that has played a relatively tough schedule has been you know two different atmospheres has played tough teams has won a big time game against Alabama obviously lost the gross one against Arkansas so that is something you can absolutely throw back at them but i do think it is one of the scenarios where in a normal year in the SEC without Texas and Oklahoma without a couple of these new teams and without no divisions Tennessee's probably pretty firmly in the mix they're probably pretty firmly in the 12 team playoff if this is not a situation where they have new teams coming in and the conferences or the schedules are totally different from one another and we'll talk about Texas here for a second i think they're a great team no doubt about that i really do think this is one of the most talented one of the highest ability teams in the world there you go go buffs yes sir it's going to be incredible to watch this on full but i think you look at Texas they're a very good team no doubt about that if they lose to A&M they should not be in or around playoff contention and i very much do mean that i think if you're going to get into the playoff you have to prove that you can play on the field with one of the elite teams in the country they didn't prove it against Georgia if they don't prove it against A&M they should not get in i don't care if they're 10 and 2 and they have a couple of really good losses that is the one of more annoying things that i've been hearing around the cfp right about now is good losses they're losses let's just move forward let's figure out how we're going to uh figure that or how we're going to you know discern this and overall i think for Texas they're a very good team if they go 10 and 2 and they get in over Tennessee we got a problem on our hands i'll just be totally honest and then on the other side you do have Penn State let's say Penn State were to lose another game no world where they should be in they haven't won that big-time game they played Ohio State tough Ohio State gave them plenty of chances to play them tough no doubt about that so it's going to be really interesting to watch all of this unfold and definitely in pretty much every conference it's going to be fascinating to watch this unfold but particularly in the SEC that's the one where you see that big-time log jam that's the one where you see all those big-time issues and this is something that just needs to be fixed and i do tend to believe that it will be fixed at least from a perspective of scheduling balance i do think they'll figure this out i don't know if they go back to divisions i don't know if they go to a pod system that the SEC was talking about but at the end of the day they got to get this fixed it can't be Texas has only played Georgia and A&M by the end of the year but Georgia's played Texas, Alabama, Clemson and Tennessee that can't be the format that we go forward with that can't be the way that this works out because in a normal format where everything was totally even i think we'd have a very different rankings of these SEC teams right about now so that's the one where you really see the issues but definitely something to watch as we get a little bit deeper into this thing and then add a conference schedules because there are some implications here especially in this season in particular and i want to make this very very clear i am not trying to tear down Indiana they have been the example that a lot of people have used but i will not i'm not trying to tear them down i think they're a very good team i think they're relatively worthy of where they should be right about now but Indiana did play a very very bad out of conference schedule they played FIU western Illinois and Charlotte and the biggest issue with this is western Illinois was not on the schedule before i believe February or January when they got out of a Louisville game to play western Illinois and not necessarily to play western Illinois but they got out of a Louisville game and scheduled western Illinois so that's an issue there's no doubt about that because if they had played Louisville and they had won that game i'd be sitting here saying even if they lose on Saturday by 30 points they should be in the field but they didn't play Louisville they played western Illinois so they're in the situation where they have to go prove it on Saturday so this is one of those issues where i don't want to say you're rewarding Indiana for playing nobody but you kind of are to a certain degree you kind of are putting in the biggest issue would be if they put them in the field if they lose by 25 to Ohio state on Saturday and still put them in the field then you really be rewarding them for an out of conference schedule that is not very talented and not very good so definitely something to watch there and then old miss doesn't get off with this by any means the best out of conference game they played was Wake Forest so not necessarily all that uh tough and uh really lay up games the rest of the way they got ready for the conference schedule four and oh dominating teams people thought they were one of the best teams in the country and since conference play started they had two losses but they had two losses to play around with that is kind of the approach that a lot of these teams are taking and i can't necessarily blame them for taking it if you're going to reward some teams for not necessarily playing really tough out of conferences i'm not going to play a tough out of conference why would i play a tough out of conference if we're going to you know reward teams for not and i'm not going to sit here and say we should reward Penn State or Texas or Tennessee for scheduling a West Virginia or a Michigan or an NC state that didn't necessarily end up being all that great but we do need to encourage team to schedule those games we do need to encourage teams to play a Georgia versus Clemson which i think should probably bumge Georgia up a little bit in the rankings right about now or Texas Ohio State is playing next year we have to encourage teams to continue to schedule those games so i think teams will do this if you give them the opportunity to say we're just going to play three tomato cans and move on with our schedule they're going to take it and run with it that's kind of the reality of this situation they need as many losses to play around with once they get into the conference schedule if you're going to give them the ability to play tomato can one two three and four they're going to play tomato can one two three and four so it's going to be really interesting to watch i do think this will happen if they give them the opportunity i don't really know what that would look like you know maybe if Indiana gets in maybe you do see a couple of these games canceled like that Louisville Indiana game earlier in the year or a couple of different things just one of those situations where if i have wiggle room now i want to get as deep into the season with that wiggle room still intact so it's going to be interesting to watch definitely one of those things that could have implications down the road but Texas just scheduled a series with Notre Dame in 28 and 29 i wouldn't be surprised if the next couple of years it continues to go like this i wouldn't be surprised if those games were never played because there's not really a motivation from either of those teams to play those games if you're going to let them in regardless so definitely something to watch and definitely one of those things that depending on what they do with Indiana a lot of things could change about the schedules for the out of conference teams going forward and then the worst one of the bunch resting starters possibly and man that should we enjoy Galloway take might have been one of the worst takes that i've ever heard my life i'll be totally honest with you it was insane and if you haven't heard it he suggested that Indiana bench Curtis work on Saturday they rest him to avoid a Jordan Travis situation as he dubbed it Jordan Travis got injured against North Alabama so wouldn't exactly be a Jordan Travis situation but obviously Curtis work is going to play there's no doubt about that he is a competitor Kurt zignetti is not going to let him not play he is going to push him out there on the field and let him go to work so there's not an issue for this game i'm not arguing that they are going to play their best players plain and simple they are not going to take anything for granted because there still is the chance that they do fall out with a blowout law so definitely something that i'm not worried about that game in particular i am worried about the idea in general because SMU plays Virginia this weekend if they beat Virginia this weekend they're in the ACC title congratulations you have set yourself up in your very first year and something we should talk about is how many teams in their first year getting to their conference championships but definitely something we will break down a little bit later but all these different things you if you get a win this weekend you're in the ACC title then you have Cal at home next week there's a very real world where they sit Kevin Jennings let him get healthy for that back end stretch and for that ACC championship and i wouldn't necessarily be able to blame him too aggressively i i don't think necessarily it's the right thing to do i would love all the players to play all the games but you look up at the NFL if they got nothing to lose if they have no seating or anything to lose they will rest their starters in the final game so maybe that's the way that we're heading and SMU might be the very first to kind of kick over that can organ does play uh washington next week they're already in the big 10 championship now this one's a little bit different because organ washington organ wants to win that game very badly dan landing is not going to take an off day on that day because he badly wants to be the team that knocked him out of the uh cfp last year all that being said they could do that say they were playing perdue or say they were playing north western i think they would and i would not blame them for doing that so all of that being said i do think these kids want to compete i do think these a lot of these kids will not miss games because they just want to play football i also do think there will be decision uh business decisions that have to be made one way or the other because you look up the NFL it's the perfect example it is a uh conference it is a league that is very very tough to deal with and it's one of those things where sometimes you just got to rest your body towards the end of the year i don't necessarily think it's going to happen too much this year but if people look around this time next year and say we're pretty much in the 12 team playoff we might as well rest a couple of these guys and continue on our way fully healthy it's one of those things that's almost just bound to happen at some point we'll just see how quickly that it happens but overall i've really enjoyed this year the 12 team playoff has given us some great things it's given us some not so great things but you you do see some of the examples that people were saying when they said it would ruin the regular season i didn't necessarily fully agree with that but i understand where a lot of those people are coming from because now you're looking at maybe five years down the road teams aren't scheduling tough out of conference games the resting starters in the final week or maybe final weeks of the season depending on the scenario and the first first couple in the last couple of weeks of the season are relatively bland obviously you'll have the rivalry obviously you'll have big games no doubt about that you'll have teams fighting for their lives you won't have quite as much as you expected in this 12 team playoff so all of this can be fixed in a number of different ways with the number of different you know playoff formats and different things incentives and all that type of thing but we do got to get in in control because it's one of those situations where as you expand the 12 team playoff you do also expand or take away some of the variability to get left out of that playoff so some of these teams that are firmly in like smu or like organ they might just kind of bow out and say you know we're just gonna hang out this last week of the season make sure all of our guys get healthy and then we'll attack the back half so it's something to watch definitely the consequences of this thing we're always going to come to fruition at some point they're starting to show themselves a little bit hopefully we'll get them fixed but definitely something to watch as we head into 2025 and we'll see if any of those out of conference games get canceled this upcoming offseason but we'll break it all down with time no doubt about that but let's take our third break here when we come back we got a week 13 whip around a ton of games that i want to talk about real quick and we'll break them down right after this breaking news coming in from bet 365 where every nail biting over time win breakaway pick six three point shot underdog win buzzer beater shoot out walk-off and absolutely every play in between is amazing from football the basketball and hockey the baseball whatever the moment it's never playoff just starting to rear their head just a little bit we had lane kiffen's comments about the conference title games have a couple of crazy suggestions to rest some starters but definitely some things to be worried about as we move forward with this 12 team playoff but let's get into a little bit of a whip around we have a ton of different games that i want to get to hear really quickly and a ton of ranked games that couldn't have a lot to do with what the CFP race is going forward but let's start over in the mountain west a huge game between unlv and sannos a state this friday going to be one of those games where unlv is one of those teams kind of like klimson right about now where they're just waiting for a loss they're waiting for a loss from colorado state to open the door where they can get into that mountain west championship and we'll talk about that game tomorrow they have a pretty good shot to lose that game but we'll break it down tomorrow in more detail but hodgebolic Williams has been absolutely incredible since taking over for quarterback from matthew sluka only three ints 22 total touchdowns has over 2000 total yards on the year has executed this offense at a very very high level and has continued that rise for brendham area in the offense of coordinator a very talented guy that would not be surprised if he was a head coach somewhere this time next year but the other thing that's going to be very special to watch in this game is the wide receiver groups if you are not watching ricki white nicknash you're not doing the right thing these two guys are so talented frankly nicknash is my belittnikov winner right about now they are going to make special plays i absolutely promise you that ricki white not only catching the ball on punt on punt block he can make some special plays he's has three punt blocks this year by himself absolutely insane and i do think this unlv team will have enough to get it done but this is going to be a really good one on set on friday excuse me this is going to be an awesome game and definitely could decide could send unlv right into the mountain west championship could keep them right on the outside looking in depending on the result then we got wake force miami going to be a very interesting game because miami's coming off a buy just looking for a comfortable win looking for a win that gives him a little bit of time to breathe a little bit of time to catch their breath and then you got to go attack one against serichuse that's going to be very very tough away from home so this should be a place where you can do that there should be a place where you can roll keep it moving now wake force is going to test that miami run defense that really struggled against uh george attack a couple of weeks ago demon clayborn is a really really talented player not over 900 rushing yards on the year has gotten over 90 yards in the last three games a very very tough player one of those guys that if this miami defense especially this front seven does not come ready to play could be a player that kind of takes over this game and slows it down to a degree that miami offense does not want to happen so this is a spot where miami's just got a role and then they can turn their focus to serichuse if they've already turned their focus that way then maybe wake force and shock the world here that line being at eight makes me a little bit nervous i'll be totally honest with you i think it to be honest i didn't change the line that's why it's it's weird to me because the line is 24 i apologize for that for uh forgot to change that line fully but it is 24 it is not eight if it was eight then i'd be very very worried but they should be fine in this game i do think they're gonna win i do think the worry meter might go a little bit up with uh some of the struggles if they do struggle in this game then i'll be very worried about them when they go on the road next week but as of right now i think they'll win this game with a 24 point uh margin there then you have smu the other team in the acc that's trying to battle for a spot in that uh in that title game and they can punch their ticket on saturday if they get this win they're officially in the acc title in their very first year and you look around the way colorado and arizona state looking to do that in the big 12 texas looking to do that in the ac scc organs already done that in the big 10 so it could be every single conference that has someone new in it which would be just absolutely insane and not the way i saw this going at all texas would be the last one there that really needs to hold up their end of the bargain feel pretty confident that the big 12 is gonna give us at least one new uh player oh excuse me did not mean to move on that quickly smu is looking for a little bit of a bounce back after a relatively rough performance against boston collard they got it done they won by 10 but it was a little bit ugly at different moments and definitely need to work on some of the defensive issues but virginia trying to play spoiler again after two weeks ago they beat pit kind of ruin their season obviously got kind of skull dragged by a noted aim last week but it should be a fun game and i think these two offenses are really going to go at each other i think cool angrier against kevin jennings is going to be a really fun quarterback battle to watch i do think smu is going to get this win i think they're going to punch their ticket to the acc championship but i do think it's going to look a little bit ugly on the way there i think it's going to be one of those games that they just have to gut out at the end make that one big play but i do think they make that play i do think they get the win i just think it's a little bit ugly than some people are thinking right now then kentucky they head over to texas and the crazy stat about this game that some of you might have seen floating around uh twitter uh online in general this is the furthest west that kentucky has ever played a football game they played back in austin about uh back in the fifties i believe when bear brian was the head coach and they're back in austin for the for the most recent time since then which is absolutely insane but that's where you are that's absolutely crazy stat but even including bowl games this is as far west as they have gone maybe it'll change that at the end of the year with a bowl game who knows but queen yours needs to have a good game here there's no two ways about that he has to be better moving around the pocket because kentucky can absolutely get after him he has stayed a couple of those big plays and more than anything else he's got to get help from his run game it was very solid towards the end of the game last week against arkansas but it's gonna have to be a factor pretty much throughout this one if they want to have the effect that they absolutely can have on that side of the ball so going to be really interesting to watch this one and really more than anything this is a game where texas just cannot look ahead they cannot get uh caught up on that big game next week they have to make sure they take care of business because this defense can make you pay they show that against ole miss and you're gonna have to be very careful i do think texas wins but the results can vary greatly uh they can absolutely blow out this team they can play a really close one really tough they could lose this game it all uh kind of sits on the shoulders of queen yours if he has a great game i think they can win it by 25 if he has a mediocre game i think they can win it by three and just get out with a win and move on to next week and then you do have pen state minnesota another one of those kind of upset alerts they're going on the road to play a minnesota team that really wants that one win they really want that one big time win we talked about arbor early in the in the show minnesota's another team kind of sitting on the outskirts of the big ten but really wants to ruin one of the seasons of the guys up top and pen state finds themselves in the same boat as texas i think impressive wins would help them at least give themselves a little bit of a buffer i don't think they have quite the buffer that texas might have in this one but overall i do think it's one of those games where if you can flex your muscles a little bit you will get that committee to feel a little bit better about pushing you up to a place where you're likely safe even with a loss in the last week i would be surprised if they do lose in the last week to maryland but this game is definitely one to watch and i think when you look at uh pen state they haven't necessarily been great on the road they obviously dominated perdue last week but just about everyone does that but they were rough on the road against usc they did get an injury against wisconsin which hurt them a little bit differently but maybe minnesota with all of those fans kind of really intact in this thing and definitely wanted to ruin pen state season maybe there's a little bit of juice in that stadium and maybe the pen state uh road woes that they've kind of dealt with are going to come back to bite them just a little bit here but i think if they win this game pen state it's probably in the cfp much respect to maryland obviously but at the end of the day i feel pretty confident that they would they would win that one at home and even if they didn't i think there would be a slight opening especially if a couple of different teams lost but you don't want to leave anything up to chance want to win out the rest of the way and make sure that you're in that field but this is going to be a tough one to make sure you do it and i think they get the win but maybe they don't cover that line we'll see what happens in this one Boise state at wyoming a huge one ash and gente continues to roll on and they're kind of an uncharted waters they are the uh the first round buy team can they handle that can they keep their wits about them and not get a little bit too high mighty not get a little bit too ahead of themselves and get towards the mountain west championship they still got two games to play and wyoming is standing in the way of them obviously 23 point spread so they should be able to win this game but it's going to be really interesting to watch this one in wyoming is one of those teams where you're really just trying to ruin Boise state's run just about everyone in the mountain west is trying to ruin Boise state's run now the issue is Boise state is going to be able to run the ball wyoming is not necessarily a great run defense they can run the ball themselves with Harrison wally and a couple of those other guys but overall Boise state is going to be able to run the ball in this game i think they can win it and frankly i would stretch it out a little bit kind of like last week you made that one look a little bit better than it was i would definitely do that to make sure you keep that by position to make sure the big a big 12 does not jump you because i think the committee is going to try to do that at some point so try to give him no reason to as of right now then you got alabama heading over to norman oklahoma to play a game and man it should be a bigger game it is oklahoma's fault of course but at the end of the day this one should be special this one should be maybe even for a spot in the CFP because it's two of the best programs in college football history getting together in a very historic place that it could have been awesome i'm just going to leave it at that that being said oklahoma really wants to get this one they are one game away from ball eligibility they have bam and lsu the rest of the way so they got to be very careful they could lose those two games and be out of a bowl game at the end of the year but they want to ruin some of the sec season and lsu or bam up would be very very fun to do now bam would be a little bit more satisfying a little bit more to ruin and bam a season then for lsu but at the end of the day it's going to be really awesome to watch this one i think this is a very low scoring tight affair about half time and then bam it hits a couple of plays in the second half i do think oklahoma's really alive here but i do think bam it gets the win with a couple of big plays over the top i was date goes on the road to utah this upcoming weekend going to be really tough i was state still technically in the race for the big 12 and frankly by this time on saturday calorado could have already lost byu or the arizona could have already lost and the door would be wide open for arizona state to walk through it it would be a crazy turn of events but that definitely could happen where they kick off this game and a win put some essentially in the big 12 championship would still have to be can the state next week but we'll put them in the driver seat for sure but uh utah is going to be plenty up for this game they're four and six and they need wins this week and then at ucf to get to a bowl game it's not something cal wedding ham is very used to sitting on his couch during december so he's going to have to get the next two wins and i would say it's been one of those teams that on the road has shown they can get got so definitely going to be really interesting the uh the thing that worries me here is the utah defense got rolled by the uh calorado pass offense last week i don't think i would say can do quite what calorado can do obviously but i do think they can exploit that i think they can win this game and i think they'll make a couple of big play plays to at least keep their hopes alive maybe put them very firmly in the big 12 race but going to be incredible to watch all of those games unfold and we got plenty more to break down tomorrow no doubt about that but let's take our last break here when we come back let's get to a little bit of a hot take thursday i got a couple of playoff takes that are for future years that i want to break down for you guys and a couple of them are going to make some big 12 and acc fans mad but that's what i'm here to do so i'll break it down right after this breaking news and this one is almost unbelievable yeah it's all about new customers at bed 365 because they get $150 in bonus bets when they bet $5 and even better bonus bets can be used on the spread totals and player props there you have it bet $5 to get $150 in bonus bets and see why it's never ordinary at bet 365 gambling problem calor text 1 800 gambler 21 plus only must be physically located in calorado terms and conditions apply so so so all righty welcome back everyone we just talked about a couple of different games coming up this upcoming weekend definitely a couple of huge ones and a couple of games in the sec that gonna be a little bit sketchy texas taking on kentucky we also have alabama going to oklahoma couple of games i could totally switch up the conference race and the cfp race in a lot of different ways but let's get into a little bit of a hot take thursday i'll break down a couple of the cfp takes i have for you and a couple of them are going to be a little bit upsetting for some of the other fans out there but at the end of the day i got to be able to speak my truth got to be able to say what i think and i think for this first one i'm gonna get a lot of love i'll be totally honest with you we got to change the selection committee and it first of all this is not an attack on those people or the work that they do i do believe that they do the best they can i do believe that they are very good people i do believe that they're trying to do their best that being said we have to get other people in there very respectfully now they're very qualified individuals they're players they're former players they're former coaches they're reporters in there they're not nearly enough from nine of the 13 people are ADs at a certain university and not to say that ADs don't know enough about football but to say ADs don't necessarily have the emphasis on football that i would like them to have if they're going to decide who's playing for a national title plain and simple i really do think that they should be fully comprised of former coaches former players mainly those two groups and then you have a couple of media personalities i really do think that's the best way to go about it people will argue tooth and nail of who the media personalities could be who the biases of those media personalities are will nixaben put on for alabama all of these different things absolutely will come up in the conversation i'm not arguing that but i would argue it happened even more when you're talking about an ad or when you're talking about someone that might not have the inter the inside knowledge of a football program of a football team where a nixaben would or where maybe a joe clatt would or maybe a couple of these other guys danny canell a couple of these other guys absolutely would so you're going to have a battle one way or the other you are going to have biases in those in that room that is absolutely unavoidable because this is college football this is sports people are going to have biases when they walk in that room i personally believe that former coaches that former players will actually have less biases because they will understand what the football is being played in front of them they will be able discern which is the better team which is the most deserving team all that type of stuff because they've lived all of those scenarios they haven't necessarily seen them play out in front of them they have literally been inside of those scenarios so that's kind of the big difference to me it's not to say that ad's don't do their best worker don't try their best or are downright bad at this is just to say we have to have people that have been on the field that have felt those moments that know what it's like to do what organ did last week to play eight straight games and go on the road and beat a team like wisconsin that knows how hard it is to do some of the things like play a full sec scheduled that knows how hard it is to play a lot of these different really really tough out of conference games all of that stuff has to be taken into account and not to say ad's don't do it i just don't think they can do it to a degree that all these other people can that all these other players coaches even media members can to a certain degree so obviously you are going to have biases in that room the good news about having different media members in there is you can plug someone from fox you can plug someone from espn you can plug someone from cbs and you would hypothetically you would have different biases in that room a lot of people say espn is biased toward the sec they definitely are and that obviously will blend itself to them kind of pushing that narrative on fox side they'd rather have a couple of big 10 teams in there that would help them out in the next year when they come to the media rights deal so they would want a little bit more big 10 involved and for cbs it's a little bit of a mix if they want a little bit more big 10 a little bit more big 12 it would be kind of playing around with different stuff and you obviously have to play around with this group and definitely not make sure that not the wrong people are in there but let's be totally honest are we all okay with a ton of ad's just making the decision of who are the best football teams in the country are we all cool with nine of the 13 people not having played football their entire lives or coach football their entire lives deciding who gets to play for the most prestigious trophy in our entire sport that's the issue that i have so whether it's Nick Saban or Reese Davis or Kirk Herb Street or Joel Clad or Josh Pader whoever you want it to be i i'm more than happy to litigate that throughout the offseason we have to have a different group we just do we have to have former players in there we have to have former coaches in there we could argue about the media personalities a little bit i'd be more than happy to go back on that just a little bit as long as the former coaches and players were involved but at the end of the day we are not selecting the best teams in the country with the right people we're just not so i we have to find a way to get a right selection committee in there much respect for the work that those people do but as of right now we are not seeing this play out the way that we want it to i don't think any of us are we have to get new people in there we have to get a totally new system for that selection committee in there i wouldn't necessarily love going purely to a formula i kicked around that idea a little bit but i do think there has to be some human element in this with a sport that is so much human element i do think we have to add that in but i do think we have to have just more qualified people in that room again not trying to disrespect the committee but a little bit trying to disrespect the committee um but moving forward get rid of the auto buy system i i didn't understand it when it was brought up initially i understand why it was agreed to by all the different people because you wanted to get this thing over the finish line but let's just be totally honest the number 12 team in the country is getting a buy in Ohio state isn't that's insane it just is i love Boise state and i think they're a very good team and with this format they do technically deserve to be a top four team to be getting that buy i just think the auto buy system is ridiculous i think the idea that you win a conference that might not be quite as tough as this other conference over here you're automatically in and i understand that they should be in the field i'm not mad at the auto bid system i think it's more than fine to put the big 12 champion more than fine to put the ACC champion and more than fine to put the group of five team in that field i don't think it's really fair to automatically say well you're a top four conference champion congratulations you're a four seed you get a buy because Boise state respectfully probably would not make it out of the first weekend if they don't get that buy maybe that big 12 champion probably would not make it out of the first weekend if they didn't i get that buy and now you're looking at a situation where the five seed is where a lot of these teams want to be Ohio state right now would be set up to play a BYU team that they'd be favored by three touchdowns over and then a Boise state team where it'd probably be even longer than that so it's one of those situations where first of all you knock out the idea that the five seed is better than the one seed which i don't necessarily fully buy into but i understand where people are coming from with that you would get rid of that first of all you would also incentivize these teams to play really hard and try to fight for their conference even in the smaller conferences you try to fight for that ACC title you try to fight to play really well because frankly if Miami didn't lose last weekend and they went on to win the ACC championship they would have a very real path to the top four seed to a top four placement but it should just be the best four teams it should just be whatever the committee decides if the best four teams in the country should get the buy if we're trying to incentivize teams to play throughout the year and to play every game harder and to play every game very aggressively this is probably the way to do it you know you have a couple of teams that are not necessarily in line for a buy by any means they're probably not playing quite as hard and Notre Dame's a team where i understand this system is plenty fine for Notre Dame i'm not necessarily arguing for Notre Dame in this scenario but the reality is the highest they can go is number five the highest they can ever be is number five if they're the number one team in the country i think they should get treated like the number one team in the country i do think they should join a conference which is a totally different conversation but as of right now i just don't see why this doesn't happen i get that you want to keep the big 10 or big 12 and ACC involved i totally understand that but as of right now we are having the wrong teams get those buys we are using these buys in the wrong way and we're incentivizing teams to not want to get them which is not the way that they should go not the way that you want it to go so get rid of the auto buy system let these teams fight it out let the four best teams get those buys and then that five seed will not be quite as coveted as it is right now and people won't be arguing is it better to get the five instead of the one that's absolutely ridiculous and it's a real argument to be had right about now with this auto buy system we have and then we got this one the SEC in the big 10 break off is relatively imminent if we avoid one or if we don't get this one thing so let's break it down really quickly this is something i'm very worried about i think a lot of people around the sport are very worried about it to get this AFC NFC type format between the SEC and the big 10 it is a very real thing i'm sure they've talked about it behind closed doors i'm almost certain they've talked about it behind closed doors i don't know how readily they are to do that but let's just say Tennessee being left out i don't know if that would be enough i know it would make great thank you very mad keeping indian and out i don't know if it would be enough i know for a fact of make tony petite very mad so you'd be in a very weird spot where maybe you'll have a fight on your hands if Tennessee is left out for a one-loss indiana or indiana is left out for a two-loss Tennessee could it be the big 10 in the SEC going at each other or could they come together and say i'm very mad about this situation you want more power in this situation so let's go take our ball let's go play elsewhere and handle this ourselves i think that's a real reality that we could be staring down in a couple of weeks now one area that i absolutely promise you that this will happen i'm not sure it'll happen in the Tennessee case i'm not sure it'll happen in the Indiana case i promise you if bama or texas losing the SEC championship and falls out i promise you they will have a fight on their hands i promise you the SEC and the big 10 will immediately get together they will immediately start to write together a little bit of agreement and they will probably have a postseason set up by the end of February if i had to imagine because if you're going to drop out people for playing in those conference titles you're doing the wrong thing just plain and simple so i hate to say it hey so all this stuff is around us right now all this stuff feels like a cloud over our head and it's just waiting to pour on us i do think there is still a little bit of sunlight i do think there is still a little bit of an opening here and it comes at the expense of Notre Dame and i hate to say it but Irish fans i i apologize but here it is if Notre Dame were to lose to us at the end of the year a lot of these sides a lot of these excuse me a lot of these scenarios would be sidestepped for now it would be sidestepped for this year as of right now i apologize to Irish fans but them losing would solve a lot of problems if they were to lose i think indiana i think tennessee would get in i think the SEC and the big 10 would not have a ton of gripes to be had unless a couple of the teams fell out on the conference championship week or something like that other than that they wouldn't have too much to get mad about other than the auto buys which we already talked about so it's going to be really interesting to watch it might be unfair that all this stuff is happening around them might be unfair that we might need Notre Dame to lose for the future of college football but we might just need Notre Dame to lose for the future of college football as crazy as that sounds that might open a door where the big 10 the SEC aren't stamping their feet at the end of the day and then the next college football playoff format will seem unfair and will look unfair and probably will be unfair but it'll also make more sense it will also be more correct and i'll fight this pretty much tooth and nail with just about anyone that will do it with me but four SEC teams and four big 10 teams are likely to get in eight out of the 12 teams are likely to be from those two conferences these teams are not going to miss out let's just be totally honest whether you give them the auto bids whether you don't give them the auto bids they are going to find a way into that thing because those are the two best conferences much respect to the big 12 in the ACC i think they play much better football than a lot of people around the country give them credit for they are not playing the same level of football that the SEC and the big 10 are playing they just aren't so it's one of those situations where in the next iteration of this i think it's going to be 14 teams i think three bids are going to go for the SEC and the big 10 and that's just going to be the way it is i really do think that's probably the way we're going if the SEC and the big 10 don't break off and make their own thing which we can talk about in time but at the end of the day i do think it's going to be three auto bids for each of them i think they're going to fill up those auto bids and more i don't think we're going to have to shove SEC teams or shove big 10 teams into those auto bids where they don't belong that's pretty much the baseline here obviously you know i don't necessarily love the idea of giving a ton of auto bids to certain conferences or pushing all the weight behind these two conferences but i will say regardless of if you do it or not with this format they're going to find a way in so give them three auto bids give them four auto bids in a 16 playoff format they're going to find a way in they're going to get those four auto bids in we're not going to really argue that those are four teams that deserve to be in the field so it's going to be really interesting frankly i'd love to reimagine the playoff go backwards a little bit and reimagine what this thing should be to make it fair equitable to make it fun but at the end of the day you have it in the hands of the SEC and the big 10 and we're probably just going to have to hope that they make the right decision we're probably just going to have to hope that they keep a lot of these people in the fight and they don't necessarily have the motivation that i would like them to have to keep them in the fight so it's going to be interesting to watch no doubt about that it's a little bit unfair it's a little bit biased i'm not arguing that i also don't think it would necessarily be wrong to give them a couple more auto bids to lean a little bit more in their direction because regardless of if you lean or not they're going to find a way into that thing they're going to dominate that thing and they're probably going to win a lot in the national titles as they have the past 20 years they've absolutely dominated the sport of college football and that's probably not changing anytime soon as upsetting as that is for ACC and big 12 fans the SEC and the big 10 are just playing a different game as of right this second so it's going to be interesting to watch all this stuff unfold obviously all this stuff is a little bit more 2025 26 type problems but definitely something to watch in the next couple of years but that'll do it for this edition of the GSMC college football podcast brought
