(upbeat music) - AP News, I'm Anthony Quarney. Propose legislation in California would make it easier for prospective tenants with pets to find rental housing. - In Oakland, California, some 350 dogs are surrendered to animal shelters each month, many because their owners can't find housing that accepts pets and done as director of Oakland Animal Services. - I think the biggest challenge that we've been facing since the beginning of 2023 is having to consider a euthanizing dog's workspace. - But a bill in the California legislature would make it easier for pet owners to rent in the state. Landlords would have to provide reasonable justifications for denying a pet. Some landlords are pushing back. Deborah Carlton, executive vice president of California Apartment Association says she allows pets in her single family units that have yards. - But I will tell you, the dogs have destroyed the place. They've chewed up holes in the side of the wall. They've chewed up all of the drip system. If the bill is approved, it would apply to new leases starting on or after January 1st. - I'm Donna Warder. - AP correspondent Charles Del Adesmo reports, mid-east tensions are ramping up after strikes. - Syria's state-run SANA news agency has quoted a military statement as saying Israel carried out a missile strike targeting an air defense unit in itself causing material damage. Meanwhile Iran has filed air defenses at a major air base and a nuclear site near its central city of Isfahan after spotting drones. Some flights have been diverted or grounded after reports of explosions nearby. The commotion early Friday raises fears of a possible Israeli retaliatory strike following Tehran's unprecedented drone and missile assault on the country. US officials have declined to comment as of early Friday, but American broadcast networks have quoted unnamed officials saying Israel carried out the attacks. I'm Charles Del Adesmo. - This is AP News. The new Title IX rules from the Biden administration protect LGBTQ students, but the rule for transgender students is still on hold. David Mihan, the man who blew the lid off decades of abuse allegations at what was then called the Youth Development Center in New Hampshire, became emotional as the trial continues. - Mihan says that the real turning point was the first of many assaults by his youth counselor, a man he had grown to trust and love is a father figure. - I'm forced to try to hold myself together somehow and show as a man everything that these people did to this little boy. - In the seven years since David Mihan went to police, the state has set up a $100 million fund for former residents and brought criminal charges against 11 former state workers, including four accused of abusing Mihan.
