(crunching) - Chicago. This is your morning routine. - Listen to this. - Me. - Cap and G hood. - That's right, that's right, we're bad. - Uh-uh. - Watch the show on Twitch. Follow ESPN 1000 Chicago. - Stream the show on the pn Chicago app. - And on in there, - 100.3 HD2, and on ESPN 1000 Chicago. Now, no, no, no. David Kaplan and Jonathan Hood. - Good morning, everyone. Everyone. - It's bears money. - First thing going at the one. Caleb awaiting the snap. Takes, here comes late pressure. Ducks under it, rolls right. Throws wide open, end zone, right side. Pass, caught for the touchdown. Keenan Allen, touchdown bears. - Now for two. Snap to Caleb Williams. Throws back of the end zone. DJ Moore snears it for two. A pump of the fist by Caleb Williams. - Now one step kick there, Santos rips it right. - Ball moves, and it is on the ground. Recovered by the bears, it appears. - Yeah. - Did it go 10? - It touched the biking. - It touched the biking. - No, it touched the biking, all right. Bears have come up with it. Oh, my goodness. - Trio to the left. Caleb takes the snap. Three man rush and a good one, but it's picked up. Throwing over the middle of the field. It is caught by DJ Moore. Up in the air, at the 30. Bears rush with 12. Give them all the attention. - Give them all the attention. - Got the official at nine. Eight, seven, six underneath center. Caleb snaps the ball down with three seconds to go. - Locked from 48 earlier. This on the left hash angle, right for number eight. Snap, placement made. Swings his right leg from 48 yards. The kick is good. We are tied at 27. We're going over time, baby. Bears with the fight of their life. They balled up their fist and brought themselves back. Wow, this place has erupted. So this will be a 29 yard field goal try by Romo. Again, on the Bears practice squad, a couple of years back. Middle of the field hash mark. Snap, placement kicked by Romo. The kick is up and it is good. And the Minnesota Vikings sneak out of here after blowing a lead in the second half and coming from behind it over time to win it. 30 to 27. - It's Bears Monday on ESPN Chicago. (upbeat music) - Come on in Chicago and welcome in to the Captain Jay Good Morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you on a Bears Monday, we're opening full lines for you. 312-332-ESPN-332-3776 is our telephone number. Make sure that you watch our show on YouTube, YouTube.com. Look for ESPN Chicago on YouTube and on Twitch, twitch.tv/ESP1000Chicago. We talk about the Chicago Bears and our loss against the Minnesota Vikings by the score of 30 to 27 and overtime cap as the Bears are now 4 and 7 on the season. - Outcoached once again, critical errors by veteran players, DeAndre Carter waving his hand. Get away from the ball, bam, right off his leg. We're covered at the 15, five yards, five plays later. They're in the end zone, Aaron Jones. And yet the Bears keep fighting. Caleb was outstanding yesterday. Took a terrible sack and overtime. He's a rookie. Here's things he has to learn. But some of the throws he made were eye-popping yesterday. And any of you out there that have been questioning whether this kid is the real deal or not, he was sensational at times yesterday, sensational. But again, you're let down by your coaching staff. What the heck were we doing defensively as lack of aggressiveness, if that's a term to use in overtime? Chunk plays, Hebrew flus talks all the time. We gotta limit the chunk plays. I think there were six of them. Huge plays, 69 yards to Jordan Addison. And then Jordan Addison might have stepped out. You can't use the boundary cam because it can only be used on scoring reviews and turnovers. You can't use it on a coaches challenge. Okay, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard from the NFL. A multi-billion dollar league and you can't use the camera. But oh, we can use it for that. But we can't use it for that because not every stadium has one. So ticked off about the lack of preparation, another block field goal. And you got Vikings players openly talking in the locker room. Yeah, we couldn't believe they didn't fix the protection issue on the left side that we saw in the Green Bay game. We looked at it, huh? They didn't fix it, bam blocked. And almost blocked the game tie and kick. You know, I think that many have felt this way cap, but my first statement about this mess at Hallows Hall is that the only thing that matters to me now moving forward is number 18. And number 18 is Caleb Williams. Caleb Williams and the support around him is the only thing that's important to me now as a Bears fan because as a rookie, he has shown that he can make elite throws and that he can keep the Bears in ball games. We've seen this. There's ups and downs of his game, but that's like any rookie. There's going to be ups and downs in their game in their first season in the league. And the ups and downs were predictable. There's been some really good games and there's been some block games from Caleb Williams. But the point is though, is that at this point in time, the quarterback and his development is the only reason to watch or listen to Bears games for me. Because as we take a look at this football team right now at four and seven with a five game losing streak, we're talking about a head coach right now that is five and 18 in one score games. He's the only coach with a sub 400 win percentage in one score games. So you can't win the blowouts. You can't win this close game. So what can you win? We're immersed in a five game losing streak again. The same losing skids cap that we saw in 22 and in 21 and in 20 and in 2017. Another long losing streak for the Chicago Bears team. As you mentioned, an offense that worked where Caleb Williams is as confident as it was ever seen him under Coach Brown. But then you look at the other side, how about the defense? How about the defense? The vaunted defense is supposed to get the job done. How many times did the Vikings get the job done on third and 13 and third and 12 and third and 10? How often did that happen? Because the Bears are getting bashed defensively. So if you're the head coach cap, if you're Matt Iberfluze, you don't have a leg to stand on. You don't. How do you go to House Hall and say, well, here's the good things that we've done. The resume is just marred with so much negativity and so many things that the Bears have not done. There's no leg to stand on if you're Matt Iberfluze. You're supposed to be the defensive coordinator. Your defense sucks. It does. You have some really good plays because we are actually able to see Montes sweat, actually make some plays yesterday. Good to see. We saw Demarcus Walker actually, he actually is on the field cap and he's making plays. But the point is though, is that you could say, hey, you know what, we not may not be winning games, but look at my, he's got nothing defensively. It's coach Brown getting the job done offensively. And so if you're Iberfluze, you know you're done. You know it. We all know it, but he knows it too because you can't keep going in this direction. You're out of the playoff mix and you got nothing positive outside of the one thing that I'm watching moving forward. And that's number 18, Caleb Williams. 'Cause that's the only reason why for you and I to watch and for Bears fans to watch is to watch the development. 'Cause there's nothing else to watch there. Nothing. - Fair. - Fair. - No one kicks their own ass more than the Chicago Bears. Nobody kicks their ass more than the Bears. And so this is where you are, Cap. So we're just playing out the string, but the only entertainment value is watching 18 because as you said it before the season, it's about chasing greatness. That young man is looking at chasing greatness. And this coach is going to be chasing for another job at the end of the season. That's what he's chasing. Get the sweatshirts print for him. Chasing another job. - Fair. And if they go out on Thursday, short week, and get drilled by a really good Lions team, and I got to give Shay his props, it's got to be a month ago. - He said, I know Kansas City's undefeated. That's the best team of football. - Shay, they've got a loss, the other one's undefeated. You can't put him at number one. And he in the face of an onslaught of criticism from both of us, he has stuck to his gut. That's the best team in the NFL. And it's not close. Not close. That team is phenomenal. And I believe they're going to win the Super Bowl. I really do. They're that good. But holy cow, you get blown the heck out on Thursday? We're going to be here on Friday. We're both working. - Yep. - It would not shock me if there was a change, if they get drilled on Thursday. - Change now, change at the end of the season. The view stays the same. The only reason why that we'd want a firing from the head coach tomorrow, or today, or after Thanksgiving is because you get tired of seeing the same thing. But you will see the same thing because the product is the same. What we're seeing here is number 18, really coming into his own offensively. But on the other side cap, when you're surrendering 468 all-purpose yards defensively, that won't get it done. It won't. You think that's bad on Sunday? Win 'til Thursday. Now, I understand it's a short week, and the lines will win the ballgame. I think that's clear. But the point is those that kept, again, you're looking for things that are positive moving forward. So that way, when we flip the calendar to next season, you say, "These are our cornerstones." Eighteen's a cornerstone. That's it right there. There's wide receivers, and there's some defensive players that we like, but they fall in comparison. They pale in comparison to what Caleb Williams can bring in the table. That's him. He's a centerpiece to all of it. That's the reason why we're coming in on Friday to talk about Caleb Williams. - A hundred percent. - A hundred percent. And there are going to be a lot of guys around the league, if that job opens, when it does, go, "I know the organization has issues. "I know they don't win up there. "I know they've got a lot of things "that got to get cleaned up." Guess what? I got that guy. I can win with that guy, period. So I fully expect a change would not be shocked. I know everyone's saying, "It's never going to happen. "They've never fired a coach in season." That's nonsense. I can guarantee you that if they get blown the heck out on Thursday, that discussion will be helped. - I just don't understand, Cap, in year three. And I'm sure it happens around the league, and I think it's covered up by better play and better players. I just don't understand, just running around like school children, trying to figure out what play you want to put on the field of play. It's the NFL, fourth and four. You going for the kick? No, no, we're not going to go for the kick. Here comes the field goal unit, Cap. Halfway out on the field, and they have to turn tail and go back, because now here comes Caleb Williams. Time running down, he has to throw an emergency pass to Key and Allen that's incomplete. Cap, you have to know, you tell me, listen, I never coached, you tell me, in that scenario, you have to be thinking plays ahead. - Oh, whatever sense. - But the idea that behind you, and this is not picking on Ibafluze, we're just talking facts as far as seemingly, every year we talk about this, where there's confusion on the sideline. Are you saying what you want to do? That should be in the headset. If we don't make it here, or if we make it here, we're going to do this. That should already be there, but the idea that the field goal unit's coming out, then have to come back, and then here comes Caleb having to throw a pass again. Like, what's going on over there? - And then the play doesn't get in on time. - Right. - You got DeAndre Carter waving everybody off, and the ball hits him in the leg, and they recover at the 15. Five plays later, there's Aaron Jones in the end zone. I mean, Jalen Johnson had a bad day. - Yes, he did. - He got a pick for Jonathan Owens, and guess what? Pass interference, number one on the defense. - Really? - Cornerstones that you're supposed to believe in, and they're not playing well. - Correct. - That's when you know it's all. That's it. - Absolutely terrible, terrible, terrible stuff. They look unprepared. The field goal block is unconscionable. - Again. - And again, it wasn't like he stubbed his toe. It was the same exact area of the line. And then, let me read you exactly what the Viking said. And tell me this is not on coaching, okay? The Packers identified an issue with the Bears' field goal operation in week 11 to lead to a block in a game-winning tribe at Cairo Santos. And the Bears didn't eliminate it, heading into Sunday's game against the Vikings. Santos had a kick blocked by Vikings D-Lime & Jerry Tillery in the second quarter, and the play wound up looming large because the game went to overtime. Safety Theo Jackson of the Vikings said, Minnesota knew we had a chance because Santos kicks with a low trajectory, and linebacker Pat Jones said he was surprised to see the team did not change their protection scheme after last Sunday's end of game debacle. Quote, that's kind of rare because normally teams will go clean up what they need to clean up. You always expect teams to fix stuff, but we knew if they didn't get it fixed, we're gonna go get us one. - See? - Hey Darno, right, can you now come over here and block on the left side because we're not good enough. - Damn. - There is a bullseye on the bare special teams because they know this kicker has a low trajectory. - Correct. - So now it's like anything else, it's on film. Now it's just about opportunity and execution from the other team to try to block the field goal every time. - Absolutely. - Because they see the line in front of him and they see the low trajectory is like, yeah, we can get us one. That it's gonna be like that for the rest of the season now because now it's done several times, and so now that's a negative on the special teams. For all the positive that we saw, when Caleb Williams, to everyone being able to eat, talking about DJ Moore and Keaton Allen and Cole Comette and Rolma Dunezay. For all these guys to be able to get the job done and try to help this offense, how clutch it was at the end, special teams, how they were able to cap in a big spot to be able to get that on-side kick, it's awesome. This whole field like Johnny XA was up for grabs, which is the point where we were down like watching the game ago, God. And then all of a sudden, you're up again. You're sitting up in the chair a little bit more upright, like, oh, we had an opportunity to win this thing. It was so positive and so many things. Even though it was a mess across the board, there were so many great things that the Bears did and what an opportunity to win that ball game. 'Cause what we have done is if the Bears won, we talked about the victory, how it was clutch against a really good team. And then from there, talk about how, yeah, some things that need to clean up. But Jay Moore, here's what it comes down to. There's so many good things that happened with the Bears, but then it just shows you why they have a five game, losing streak because they don't know how to win at this point in time. They had an opportunity to get the job done and they did not. - Yeah, I was at the game yesterday and 40% of the people left when we were down 11. - Wow. - And once that situation happened from the fourth quarter going into overtime, everybody's spirits was up, it was electric, it was just so a really good vibe in the stadium and we were just deflated again. - You had an opportunity, it was right there. And then, of course, you pissed it away. Of course you did. - How about this? - And overtime. - Iber Flusas Bears coaches five and 18. Five and 18 in one score games. - Yeah? - Kevin O'Connell, 24 and 10. And how about this one? They just flashed it up as well on TV. Kansas City in one score game yesterday. That's their 13th in a row, in a row. Iber Flusas under 40% in one score games. - Hmm. Wow. - If you're the only coach, five and 18 you say. - Yeah. - Wow. 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone number. If you're on hold, you will be on the air. Kevin, I want to talk to you about what you saw. If you were at Soldier Field, we want to get your thoughts 'cause Jay Moore was there, the up and down, the ebb and flow of how things went with the Chicago Bears. You're like, oh, we're gonna lose again. But then you felt like the Bears had an opportunity. - And they fell short. - First, on-side kick recovery this year by a team. - First one. - Yeah. - So let's get your thoughts here about the Bears. Still to come, we'll hear from Kale Williams, a quarterback for the Bears as well. It's a Bears Monday on the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show. [MUSIC PLAYING] - Hits a guy in the air to the air side being waved up. Oh, and hit the address harder. False free Minnesota's got it at the 15. It kicked back and hit the Andre Carter. He was waving everybody off. And the Vikings come up with it. - Captain Jay Hood on back. - Appreciate you guys. I listened to you just running out of ESPN 1,000 apps. Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. - It's a Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN 1,000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app on a Bears Monday. 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6 is our telephone number. Make sure you watch our show on Twitch. And on YouTube, we'll hear from Matt Eberflu's head coach for the Bears coming up at 8.20. It's an overreaction Monday. We'll get to that as well. But first, your thoughts about the Bears. You've heard our thoughts. I mean, five-game losing streak. Bears have had losing streaks in 17, in 20, 21, 22. How five games are more, and it just sucks. It does. Now, Cap, you mentioned in the first segment talking about Caleb Williams. And again, I thought one of the best games he's had is Chicago Bear when you think of the numbers. 340 yards, 32 for 47. The key stat to me is no interceptions, zero interceptions. So he keeps it clean. But again, Cap, because he's a rookie and they all do it, they will regress back to the days in college. You're not in Los Angeles anymore, where you think that an offensive line and your tight end, anyone else will hold up for you to make a play for 10 seconds. Yeah, against San Jose State. Brother, you just can't do it. I know you think you have time to make a play. But at some point, that will have to get out of him. Like, he has to know even in his clock, the clock in his head, went off thinking, if I could just give more time to get to DJ, more time. There is no more time, brother. They're not getting open. You got the red ball away. It was a silly sack. We've seen him from Caleb Williams before, but as a rookie, you have to deal with that. As an offensive staff, like, you tell him to get the ball out. And still, he thinks, nah, man. And he's been-- I can get it out. In the last two weeks with Thomas Brown, he's been much, much better at getting the ball out on time. Not on that play, he didn't. No. They dropped a bunch of guys out, knowing that we had to get a good chunk play. And I held the ball too long. And they made a great play. I should have just thrown a ball out of bounds, literally fight another down, another play. And it's not what happened. What can Brown do for you? When was it clear for you, what was going on? And did you have enough time to get everybody in place, of course, to put it down play? We ended up running up against the clock in that moment. In those moments, you don't really want to run up against the clock, just because you want to get set and have your play and be able to see what's going on. And I think the confusion of-- because Kyle wrote and then ran on the field and all of that. So I think the confusion had to play and come in a little bit later. And we got to the huddle and trying to scramble. And I ended up mishearing what TV said. And from there, it went downhill and had incomplete pass. And I want to play that we didn't-- and I didn't necessarily want to run. And we didn't, TB, and the other coaches that we didn't call. And from there, you got to just-- you obviously aren't going to try and use another timeout, because the game's going to be close at the end of the game, because we already used one. So you got to get up there. If you have to, really fast, make a few checks, and get the ball snapped. And it still is a match-up lead. And so go to your best match-up guys. And right then and there, I went to Canaan. And we just missed-- You say you misheard the play call? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So I thought there from Keller Williams that he misheard the play call. Right, because you're running your field goal unit out, and then get back, get off there. And now the clock's running down, crowds into it. You're trying to get everybody organized. What did he say? Oh, God. Ran the wrong play. Yeah? That operation falls on the feet of the coaches. Yeah. And we got to ask Coach Eberfus when he joins us at 8.20, Matt, what happened on the fourth down play? Caleb said, kicking teams coming out. You guys want to go for it. How does that get cleaned up? Fair question. The communication between his sideline and his headset is just-- it's nonexistent at times, especially in most crucial times. I just don't understand that. Correct. You got better communication on high school sidelines than what we skid with the Bears. And again, Cap, if you have a good team, you can overcome it. You've got a good team. This is never talked about. But when you have a team that slips sliding away in the NFC and you have a 5-game lose streak, it gets magnified even more so. 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6 is our phone number. Let's go to the phone lines and talk to you the Bears fan. On this Bears Monday, the Bears lose in overtime to Minnesota by a score of 30 to 27 in Bolivia at 9.26 in the morning. Listening on the ESPN Chicago app here is Art on Cap and Jhood. Art, good morning. Hey, good morning. How you guys doing? Cap and Jhood. We're doing? From Bolivia. Awesome, man. Congrats. Bolivia. That's our first one ever. We're always listening to you guys. We're always out here listening to all Bears fans across the world. Appreciate you. Thank you, Art. So you saw what you think. Yeah, so one thing that pissed me off, Caleb clearly looked upset, right? And towards the end of the game, I don't know if you noticed, that O'Connell was just consoling in Caleb. They had a pretty lengthy conversation. And the pisses me off that an NFC North rival pet coach has to be sold here, man. I've never seen him lose ever do that. He just doesn't care. I'm just wondering what was he telling him? Was he saying, hey, hold on. For another three, four years, you'll be on my roster or what? It just pissed me off that there's got to be other head coaches taking care of our quarterback. I mean, he clearly had his best game. Well, yesterday or so? Well, Art, let's look at it this way. And we put you your telephone call. Let's look at it this way. The National Football League is a huge fraternity. It is. And so it wasn't as much consoling as much as it is. Hey, man, you scared us. You're pretty good. It's a shame I got to keep taking you on at least twice a year for the next decade or whatever it is, Cap. Not consoling as much as it is just encouraging. Like, hey, man, I'm an offensive coordinator. You're a hell of a quarterback. Yeah, so I think that's all it is. Yeah, so Caleb spoke and you get Caleb first and foremost right here at ESPN 1,000 with J-Mac before he deals with the rest of the media. But he was asked, what was that deep conversation? I mean, he's a guy like him. You know, that's his offense and head coaching. His guys love him. I have a few teammates or old teammates over there that talk about him and have talked about him. And they love him. So when you met him at the draft and all these different things. And so when somebody comes over to you that's having guys and having Sam Donald, I'm even out there balling. And he's been a great coach so far, I believe. And you believe, and you hear. And those encouraging words are important. That's cool. Super cool. I had no issue with it. I know Art and Bolivia did, and thanks for the call. But I had no problem with that. And plus, that QB collective that Caleb's part of, Justin was part of, Walter was part of. I think Kevin O'Connell has history there as well. It don't-- Art, there's a lot more things to be concerned with the Bears besides the competition coming over to hug Caleb Williams. It happens all the time. I know that the old school knuckle-dragging fans, like, you're not supposed to be able to fraternize with the other team. It doesn't matter. We lost a game, why are they so kissy, huggy? Look, look, oh, Bradovich, it's OK. We can be able to still get along with the opposition. Yes, the Bears have to straighten out their own crap. But at the same time, though, it happens all the time. Everyone knows each other. Yeah. [INTERPOSING VOICES] 100%. They know each other very, very well. And he said, I never see Eberfuss to it. He's with him seven days a week, Art. I guarantee you, Matt, that was a very good job at his relationship with Caleb. Yes. We can criticize the coach for a lot, not that. From Bolivia to Charlotte, North Carolina, whoo, and Harding is with us on Captain J. Hood on the ESPN Chicago app, Harding Good Morning. Whoo! Good morning, gentlemen. Good morning. Good morning. What's up, man? I'm really buying into-- by no means in my comparing Caleb to Patrick Mahomes, but I am buying into the idea of what it would look like had he been drafted to Patrick Mahomes to the Bears. I love what I'm seeing from Caleb. I don't know that there's a player I would trade right now in getting rid of Caleb Williams. And you guys know I'm a huge Justin Fields fan, huge. But Caleb looks amazing. Cerebral quarterback. Caleb is immensely more talented than Justin Fields. The only thing I want you guys to admit, though, there was no way for Justin Fields to be successful here. Look at what's happening with Caleb and the skill set that he has. That throw would look like a Mario jump sideways swing throw to Doug. DeAndre Swift down the sideline. That is insane, man. Like, there's not a lot of quarterbacks that are doing things in that nature. Cole Comet has to stay on that block when DeAndre Swift disengages. Like, there's no way. They have to communicate. They could talk right there on the field. I mean, I understand it's loud, but he has to stay on that block. They both can't disengage there. Caleb took a back sack there, but he needs some help, man. But nonetheless, the entire team had moments of letting Caleb down, and he's carrying that team on his back like a Superman, and he looked impressive. That is an amazing loss. No moral victories. But Caleb looks every bit of what was so to us when we drafted that quarterback at number one. But I do want you guys to say, I'm sorry, Justin. The results of the results, if you're gone, the losses are there. Ebert Flu should have been outright with you, but there's no way you could have been successful in that scenario with that franchise organization and that coaching staff. I'll talk to you guys later. Have a great day, Harding. Harding, thank you. So when are we supposed to admit that Justin feels had no-- yeah, he had no shot with this team. And I know that for some that are still around, rooting for Justin Fields, then he should be in a Bears uniform. Even with the weapons of Moore, Allen, Komet, Adunze, Swift, again, still issues with Justin Fields getting the ball out. I watched that game Thursday at a steakhouse in Daytona, and I was watching the big screen. I'm like, they're just got him in for a certain set of plays. I'm like, gah, Lee, Justin. You're probably better than that at this point in time. But he's not. It's just a few handful of plays that Tom Lanazim out there for. And it would still be an issue with him getting the ball out. He can run with the football. But again, not having to relitigate this, Justin Fields would have a problem with this team too. No question. Justin struggled throwing the ball in the middle of the field. He had his issues. Now, that all said, yeah, he was putting a really bad situation too. No quite two years ago, he had no chance. No. All right, Harding, we appreciate your telephone call. Now, he leaves on open for you. 312-332-3776 is our phone number. When we return, we'll take more of your phone calls from the Bears. They lose to the Vikings. 30 to 27 in overtime. It's a Bears Monday on Captain Jay Hood. Checkmate 16, and he has suppression on target. That's why I see him in my shot, or no shot, with Captain Jay Hood on ESPN-1000 and ESPN-Chicago app. That's why I see him in my shot. Good morning, and welcome in to the Captain Jay Hood Morning Show on ESPN-1000. And streaming on the ESPN-Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, will hear from Eddie Reffluse the head coach for the Bears coming up at 8.20. But first shot or no shot, here's Shay Norling. Shay, good morning boys on a Monday, Bears Monday. How are we feeling? Awesome, man. Awesome. Feeling good. Here with Hoodie, he's back from Florida. He's looking good. Spry. He was out to get some steps in out in Daytona, called three games, and we're all together. Let's go, it's Thanksgiving week. Bears have a five-game losing streak. I don't let them affect my mood. Oh, yeah, we know. OK. All right, Shay. I mean, at the same time, every Monday at a clock, they don't affect my mood. And then aggregation, aggregation, aggregation, it'll be 18 videos of Captain Upset. They don't affect my mood. Your cell phones as bad as your offense. Our offense look better. I guess what? If his cell phone cuts out, your defenses as bad as your cell phone. That would be good. That would be good. And accurate. And accurate, Kyle. Wow. Here's Shay Norley. All right, let's get started with shot or no shot today. Caleb Williams yesterday posted the third best passer rating on the season against the vaunted Brian Flores defense. Only two quarterbacks have fared better against the Vikings defense this year. Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. Caleb, I thought, played by far his best game of the year yesterday, especially him in the context and the defense that he was up against. Well, that was going on. Jayden Daniels had another underwhelming start with Washington. Drake May got totally destroyed by Miami. It was not even competitive. Shot or no shot. It is clear now that Caleb Williams was the right choice with the number one pick. Well, that's a shot. But again, for a prospective cap, every rookie is going to have ups and downs. There's no perfection when it comes to this. Jayden Daniels, have you seen what's happening in Washington right now? Again, everyone was pulling their pants down for Jayden Daniels through the first six weeks of the season. Caleb sucks. Caleb, we made the wrong choice. Cap, everyone goes through ups and downs. Look at the elite throws that Caleb Williams is making. And again, on top of that, the zero interceptions mean more to me than anything else. Think about it. And Caleb Williams snaps a four game streak without passing a touchdown as the longest by a bear starting quarterback since Kyle Orton back in 2005. Point is, though, is that he finally is able to get to the end zone and feel comfortable at the offense. So I think that's a shot. Absolutely a shot. He would go 1-1. Anyone has just tell me you know nothing about football without telling me you know nothing about football when that dude made some of those throws yesterday. Everyone went, oh, whoa. Didn't know he had that in there. Especially against a really aggressive blitz. Big time. Those two passing touchdowns was against the blitz. And finally got into the end zone. Broke that streak that Kyle Orton had for a long time because he couldn't get into the end zone. And he passed the vaunted Mitchell Trubisky for most passing yards by a rookie. Yeah. It's a good day, man. It's good for him. But, Shay, just again, for perspective, I never looked over Caleb's shoulder to direct May over here. I didn't either. Because you go through the growing pains of good and bad with an elite quarterback that he was in college. And I think he'll be there with the Bears. But again, it's about the infrastructure around him. That matters. That is correct. All right, Shay. All right, let's-- Cairo Santos had another field goal blocked. His third blocked field goal of the season yesterday. Sadly, those three points may have wound up being the difference in the game and regulation. Viking safety Theo Jackson said after the game, quote, "We don't really cover too many kickers that have this low trajectory. Other weeks you're trying to figure out, is he better on the left hash or right hash?" But this week was, we were chomping at the bit to get that. Shot or no shot. The Bears need a new kicker in 2025. I mean-- Sure. That's a shot. If there's one out there, I mean, where'd they find Brandon Aubrey, the Dallas kicker? I think he was playing, like, soccer in Australia or something. No, wasn't he like in the Arena League? No, Jake Bates was in the UFL, the Lions kicker, who hasn't missed a kick yet this season. Yes. He was a UDFA, UFL. Brandon Aubrey, I think, was playing soccer someplace. I mean-- The Lions kicker had an advantage. He was already playing at Ford Field. He's used to the surroundings. And now he's outstanding. He's outstanding, Cap. I would say, well, can't both things be true? If you want a new kicker, fine. But again, the blocking has to be there for the Bears on their end. Correct. You heard the Vikings player said, we knew what their protection issue was against Green Bay. Well, we assumed they'd get that fixed, and they didn't. They didn't get it fixed. By the way, Brandon Aubrey played soccer, and then switched to American football playing for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL, both '22 and '23, and then signed with the Cowboys. Got it. He's making it from, like, '65. But Shae is, like, lusting after. Now the trend is, is that you could hit it from '55, but you're having problems in the '30s, some of these kickers. Correct. What happened there? That includes Brandon Aubrey. So my bro and I are in one of the survivors. It's a big one. We got knocked out yesterday. They were down to four people. Because Sebert Seibert, the commander's kicker, missed an extra point at the end. We're out. That's a lot inexplicable that had happened. That game, that shouldn't have happened. And look, I'm not saying that anybody else you're going to get is automatically going to be perfect, or be what Brandon Aubrey was last year, or what Jake Bates has been for the Lions this year. But I do think we have a problem on our hands, where teams are now exploiting the fact that Cairo Santos has a low trajectory on his field goals, and they're blocking them over the middle. That's a spot where it's like, OK, if your leg's not going to suddenly get more powerful, like take steroids or something, dude. I don't know what to tell you. You've got to be able to get the ball up over the defensive line. Takes steroids or something, dude. Come on. I don't know what to tell you. Shane Orland. What are you going to do? OK, go do 100,000 squats this off season. Yeah, but he-- Shane, he made what, like, a billion in a row from, like, 53 and then the guy was like money. What did I say yesterday? There was a point in time Justin Tucker made a billion in a row, but father time comes for all of us. I don't even know if it's father time. We got incompetence up there. They don't fix the blocking. That's disgusting. I mean, what the hell? What does he make? What does Santos make? That can't be great. I think he got like 16 million when he signed. Am I right? Wrong? OK, Cairo Santos this year. He's making 4.26 million, and his cap hit next year-- 2.1. Get off. This guy is a bigger cap hit than Saquon Barkley. Get off. All right. Cairo-- that's fact. Cairo Santos is a bigger cap hit than Saquon Barkley. I think cap hits the kicker, but also the protection is bad, too. It's rickety. You got to defend. You got to make sure that your kicker gets low trajectory, high trajectory. You got to make sure that it's clean for him to kick it. You can miss it, you can miss it, you can make it. But also, you just can't let it be a jailbreak through there. Correct. Come on now. It's all-- I think it's all encompassing. I do. Here's Shay Norley. On the final two scoring drives from Minnesota, the Vikings converted a third and 13, a third and 12, a third and 10. They erased a first and 20 in two plays. All well, the Bears sat back in a soft zone with a four-man rush. Shot or no shot. If the Bears blitzed at all yesterday, they win the football game. What do you think? I mean, we make so many mistakes. Is it just boil it down to that? Well, I mean, what his point is, is that look at it. There are some positives from the defense. You've got to sweat. They came off the Mill Carton with two tackles for a loss, a sack, two quarterback hits. Demarcus Walker with a sack, two tackles for a loss, and also was able to have a quarterback hit. Owens with a strip recovery. Dexter and Cowart also played well enough. Had a couple of nice plays. But the point that Shay's making is, where is the pass rush? Not just yesterday, but all season. It has not been there. So it's supposed to be the hallmark of the team, and the defense is not opportunistic getting takeaways enough. They also are not getting enough pass rush. Some say that sacks are overrated. Okay, sacks, to me, is a number to tell you that you're getting to the quarterback, especially if you're getting to the quarterback in abundance. But you're not even getting enough hurries for me, Cat. But I was just looking at some lack of pressure. Somebody absolutely unsolicited these numbers. I lost the tweet, otherwise I'd give them credit. You've got four second round picks you've spent on your defense. Brisker, Gordon, Jervon, Dexter, and Tyreak Stevenson, who truly looks awful. I don't know what happened to him. 'Cause a year ago, we're like, "Wow, what a great pickup that dude is." And now he looks like a lost ball in high weeds. He looks horrible. Yeah. That mistackle on the long run by Aaron Jones. That looked like me trying to make the play. There's too many of those this year. Holy bleep. And the Bears have the third most dollars allotted to the defense on cap numbers. And then any team in the NFL. Well, that's who we are, Cat. That's who we've been for a long time. You're a coach at DC. No, I know. But the money allocated to the Bears defense, that's who we've been forever. But you've got to be able to pay dividends though. That's the thing. You could pay them, but I mean, look at this second day. So the answer to the question, Shay, is shot. It is a shot if you blitz. Again, Donald was fine, but he was rattled at times because he was trying to run out of the pocket. So I would say that, yes, that's a shot. But again, looking at the cornerstones and who we thought were going to be cornerstones in this defense, they're not banking plays. This secondary, this supposed to be the most elite on the team. Where's Jalen Johnson in a big spot? Where's Tyrek Stevenson? He has not been the same since Washington. He's not. Just not. He absolutely has not. Checked out or ineffective something, but since Washington, he's not the same guy. I will. People are getting on Jalen Johnson a little bit and I get it. The penalties aren't great. They lock down Justin Jefferson yesterday. That is a difficult thing to do. It's hard for me to say he was horrible when you lock down, maybe the best receiver in the league. He had two PIs. He did. That's a fact. No, I know. But cap also, the PIs are kind of a result of a game plan where you say be sticky, play handsie and we'll give those up rather than get torched by this guy. That's how the Lions' defense is built. They tell their guys, get up on the line, press, and be handsie. If you give up a PI, that's better than getting burned. But on the other side, Addison's just burning you the entire game. Addison had a career day. Right, and that's the problem. That's a Tyrek Stevenson issue. That's a Terrell Smith issue. That's on other guys. It's like Jaylen Johnson-- here's what I'll say about Jaylen Johnson. Take the orange sleeves off. Make it a little harder for the ref to see what you're doing when you're holding somebody. And the one-- And take steroids. A buddy of mine just texted me. He said, the one over the middle. That was a putrid play by Jaylen Johnson. It was. The long one that ended up with it reversed the interception by, I think, Jonathan Owens. Yes. OK. Come on, man. This defense has too much money invested, draft pick capital, veteran players. And DC is your head coach, and the calls look terrible. Yeah. Embarrassing. And then I can't get off the fact that we got Vikings players openly going, yeah, we saw on tape, but we knew they'd fix it. Oh, they didn't. How do you not fix the field goal block? I get it, man. I get it. How many times was Simone Biles showing on the broadcast yesterday? Was she showing it? Was it? Was it a lot? Small Biles? OK. All right. I'm just trying to do the counter between her and Travis Kelsey's girlfriend. Yeah, I'm just trying to see-- I think there wasn't at the game yesterday. OK. Just making sure that she's getting enough time. Simone Biles. Correct. Especially when Owens makes a big play. Yeah. And then he did her gold medal thing. Yeah. So it was super cool. It was awesome. All right, Maddie Reflow's head coach for the Bears is right around the corner. Schedule to join us on the Captain Jhood Morning Show. [MUSIC PLAYING] You're listening to Captain Jhood. Bears lose to the Minnesota Vikings on the lake front. And the Bears are now 4 and 7 on the year with a five-game losing streak cap as the losses against Washington. It was just baffling. Arizona was just out of nowhere just to know the Bears are going to be that limp offensively. The New England game was really shocking how bad the Bears played at home on November 10th against New England. Losing a heartbreaker against the Packers on the 17th. And then this one here in overtime. Again, being on the precipice of winning versus winning are two different things. Yeah, and there are so many things that are just gut-wrenching to watch DeAndre Carter let a punt hit him. It's not like it's Vailus Jones back there who has never had any success. He plays in Jacksonville. It's not like it's some rookie plucked off the practice squad and he made a mistake. That's a veteran guy back there. Now, he did have a big kick return that set up the touchdown prior to the outside kick. 55 yards, I believe. Great, but you cannot give them the ball at the 15-yard line. You could tell, OK, first of all, with the DeAndre Carter play, I just don't understand how you're not screaming Peter, Peter, Peter, and then running away from the football where it hits him, that stinks. But I do like how he was able to bounce back and ran pissed off, knowing that he screwed up. He gave up seven points. Correct. Handed them a touch. He gave them seven points. In a game you could have won. However, I do like that he was able to bounce back and put the bears in position. Like, he definitely was pissed off and he ran pissed off. Like, you know what, I'm going to make up for this. And he tried the best he could. I really would love to know what it was that Shane Waldron said in an interview that you went, that's the guy. They interviewed like eight guys. Thomas Brown being one of them. Like, well, I think the defense looks totally different. Well, I'm not an offensive coordinator cap, but I think you and I both talked about just getting back to basics with Kayla Williams. Like, I think you and I talked about this on the show, saying that you just have to get your layups. That's what it is. And that means, look how the offense was able to work. Cole Comette getting the football in key spots from Roma Dunes A to DJ Moore to Kean Allen. There's some drops there. You're going to get that. I prefer them not to have so many drops in key spots, especially in the second and third down. But the point is, though, is that it's not like Kayla Williams is throwing the ball all over the yard. And then when he does, cap, when he gives you the deep ball, they're rainbows. That thing to swift was a thing of beauty, brother. Oh my God. On the move, headed to the sideline and drops it in there. That was incredible. Come on, man. I mean, but it just shows you and gives you a glimpse of what it could look like. But I will tell you, I went back and I re-watched that play 10 times. He did have a check down open where he didn't have to make such a spectacular throw. He did. You got to take the check down sometimes. It worked out, but guess what? So there's things he's got to be better at. You can't take the sack in overtime with a delay game following it. You can't. But all in all, in 11 career games, holy cow. Pretty good. Yeah, there's just so much cap. And obviously, from my standpoint, I'm just looking forward to what the quarterback can bring to the table because we know where the season's going. We've been here before, you and I. Thanksgiving, underwater, underwhelming, and undeserving of our full attention to thinking that the coaching staff will return, just based on how things are going. It's not going in the right direction. There's just so many Ls and so many mistakes and so much. And again, the thing that I look at cap that we'll talk to Mattie Reflus about momentarily is just you have to have better chops on the sidelines as far as what you want to do, what plays you want to have in, because it looks like a mess. Because it is a mess. Because look at the one loss record is a mess. That is correct. You have to have better command of the sideline operation. You just have to cap. You can't have these mistakes on a weekly basis. That whole thing with the field goal, we have to address. The field goal unit comes out in third quarter fourth and four. And they're halfway out in the field, and then they have to turn tail, go back. And you want Caleb Williams to turn water in the wine with Keith and Allen. And Keith and Allen, who was questionable to play, had a really good game. Really good game. Again, we talked about Caleb. But again, you didn't run the ball as well as you needed to yesterday. That plays into it. Yeah. I'm glad you brought that up. Because it's something we talked to-- again, this is what Matt tells us all the time. He understands that he wants to run the football. He said this under Waldron. He's still saying that. He wants to see more production from the running game. 22 carries for 78 yards, and Caleb Williams is a leading rusher. Is that what you want? Want that? I mean, you want to win the football game. However, you can win it. But DeAndre Swift, 13 carries for 30 yards. I mean-- Credit to UCAP, Saequan Barkley should have been here. That was a good call by you. Holy cow, is that guy unbelievable? Geez. I mean, they tried. And then it got just too rich for their blood. Yes. And so he ended up going to the Eagles. They finished second. Yes. And Saequan Barkley in a Bears uniform would have been a middling running back in this league. He would not have-- He wouldn't have the numbers he has right now. No, because he would not have Jordan Milata and Lane Johnson and all these dudes up front. That dude is in the fountain of youth right now. Look at him. The way they played last night up front, the Eagles was the first time all season that I've gone. Maybe the Lions aren't a lock to get to the Super Bowl. [LAUGHTER] That is going to be-- I'm telling you, that NFC title game hooding, that's going to be theater. Eagles Lions, that's going to be theater. Yeah. No, I understand. I watch too. I'm very impressed with the Eagles. My wife said to me, hey, we want to go see the kid. We have a son and daughter while living out of town. Can we go this weekend? I'm like, are you kidding me? Absolutely not. No. We'll go the next weekend between the NFC and AFC title game and the Super Bowl. You hit the week off. I'll go then. I'm not missing the Eagles and the Lions potentially. Are you kidding? No. Speaking of your wife, by the way-- we'll get to-- we'll hear from Eddie Riffle who's momentarily here on Cap and Jay Hood speaking of your wife. I need you to ask her tonight. Hey, hon. Is 27 points enough for you to win ball games? I already did. Oh, so you hit her with this? Go. Good. What was her response? Because I was getting ready to go to my office to do my recap. Yeah, yeah. And I said, boy, Caleb was outstanding today. And she looked at me and she's like, did you win? I said, hon. She's like, how many points did they score? She was said, Costco during the day. I said, 27. Who, Minnesota? I said, no. We, the Bears. Yes. 27 points. And look it up. It would have won most every game. OK. I was hoping you'd hear with that because she told you the week before is like, you weren't going to win the game against the Packers because the Bears will have scored 19. Look around the league cap. That's what she hit you with. Correct. 27 good enough? Yeah. Yes, it was good enough. 100%. Just fell short. Yep. All right. 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6, is our full number. Lewis and Lyle on cap and J Hood. Lewis, good morning. Hey, good morning, guys. Hey, cap. Do you want a bonafide head coach, correct? I do. So, look, this offense has been the only disciplined unit on this team so far ever since Thomas Brown came on. I think we can agree with that. Caleb had a bad sack, but, you know, he's a rookie. Agreed? Correct. All right. So if you want to see, look, we are so afraid of ruining Caleb Williams' development or stunting it with lack of continuity when we fire he refused. I don't say if I say one because he refused to have to go. He keeps him costing his game. Why not fire he refused and let Thomas Brown be the interim as an audition? If not, if he doesn't, if he can't hack it, go and get somebody who's more established. But I think that we need to keep Thomas Brown around for the sake of his killing continuity. And I don't think any head coach is going to want to come in and it's a GM or an owner saying, hey, you have to have this guy as an offensive coordinator. OK. Let's address this. We appreciate your telephone call. Let's stop this right now. This Thomas Brown for head coach thing. OK, let's stop this right now. So because the offense looks better, Thomas Brown should be the head coach. Let's not do that because that proof of concept is telling you, yes, the offense looks better, but you're still losing ball games, still losing games. Correct. So so the offense is better. Yes, cap. But it's the same offense we saw earlier in the season where Caleb was able to have that three game winning streak against the Rams, the Panthers, and the Jaguars. Correct. And I thought prior to yesterday, I thought the Jaguars game was his best game. And without the sack yesterday, maybe this would have been number one. That sack was a bad sack. And over time, I'm sure Coach will tell you that when we talk to him. Thomas Brown's not going to be the head coach here. He's not. Because if you make him the head coach, he's no longer the OC that's there every single day working with Caleb. He has other responsibilities. Now, could you bring in whoever it is? Variable, if that happened? Sure. And make him the OC if they were in agreement with that. But it's two weeks. And losses in two weeks. Correct. Losses. That is correct. So and again, all of this is not predicated on what we want. It's up to the organization. Whoever the next head coach will be, whenever that is, for the Chicago Bears, it's him. And it's also on Caleb Williams. Correct. And again, the operation looks good. You sure that's a fit? So because what you're doing is you are looking good offensively, but you're still losing ball games. Are you sure that that's a future? Correct. That those two, I don't know that. I don't either. It's two weeks. Two losses. As you said. Still to come, Matty reflues, the head coach for the Chicago Bears. Here on the home of the Bears, ESPN-1000.
