Kap & J. Hood
11/25 8 AM: Shot or No Shot
[MUSIC] Good morning and welcome in to the Captain J. Good morning show on ESPN 1000. And streaming on the ESPN Chicago app with David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we'll hear from Matt, he will lose the head coach for the Bears coming up at 8.20. But first shot or no shot, here's Shay Norlin. Shay? Good morning boys on a Monday, Bears Monday, how are we feeling? Awesome man, awesome, feeling good. Here with Hoodie, he's back to Florida, he's looking good, Spry, he was out to get some steps in out in Daytona, called three games, and we're all together. Let's go, it's Thanksgiving week. Bears have a five game losing streak. I don't let them affect my mood. Oh yeah, we know. Okay. All right, Shay. I mean, at the same time, every Monday at the clock, they don't affect my mood, and then aggregation, aggregation, aggregation, it'll be 18 videos of cap getting upset. But it don't affect my mood. Your cell phones as bad as your offense. My offense looked better. I guess what? If his cell phone cuts out, your defense is as bad as your cell phone. That would be good. That would be good. An accurate, an accurate cap. Wow. Here's Shay Norlin. All right, let's get started with shot or no shot today. Caleb Williams yesterday posted the third best passer rating on the season against the vaunted Brian Flores defense. Only two quarterbacks have fared better against the Vikings defense this year. Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. Caleb, I thought, played by far his best game of the year yesterday, especially given the context and the defense that he was up against. Well, that was going on. Jayden Daniels had another underwhelming start with Washington. Drake May got totally destroyed by Miami. It was not even competitive. Yeah, shot or no shot. It is clear now that Caleb Williams was the right choice with the number one pick. Well, that's a shot. But again, for perspective cap, every rookie is going to have ups and downs. All right, there's no perfection when it comes to this. You know, Jayden Daniels, have you seen what's happening in Washington right now? Again, everyone was pulling their pants down for Jayden Daniels through the first six weeks of the season. Caleb sucks. Caleb, we made the wrong choice. It's cap. Everyone goes through ups and downs. Look at the elite throws that Caleb Williams is making. And again, on top of that, the zero interceptions mean more to me than anything else. Think about it. I mean, Caleb Williams snaps a four game streak without passing a touchdown as the longest by a bear starting quarterback since Kyle Orton back in 2005. Point is, though, is that he finally is able to get to the end zone and feel comfortable with the offense. So I think that's a shot. Absolutely a shot. He would go one run. Anyone has just tell me, you know, nothing about football without telling me, you know, nothing about football when that dude made some of those throws yesterday. Everyone went, oh, whoa. Didn't know he had that in there, especially against a really aggressive blitz. Big time. Those two passing touchdowns was against the blitz and finally got into the end zone. Broke that streak that Kyle Orton had for a long time because he could get into the end zone. And he passed the vaunted Mitchell Trubisky for most passing yards by a rookie. Yeah, it's a good day, man. Yeah, well, it's good for him. But, Shay, just again, for perspective that I never looked over Caleb's shoulder to direct May over here. I didn't either. Yeah, just because you go through the growing pains, it could end bad with an elite quarterback that he was in college. And I think he'll be there with the Bears. But again, it's about the infrastructure around him. That matters. That is correct. All right, Shay. All right, let's. Cairo Santos had another field goal blocked, his third blocked field goal of the season yesterday. Sadly, those three points may have wound up being the difference in the game and regulation. Viking safety Theo Jackson said after the game, quote, we don't really cover too many kickers that have this low trajectory. Other weeks you're trying to figure out, is he better on the left hash or right hash? But this week was we were chomping at the bit to get that shot or no shot. The Bears need a new kicker in 2025. Uh, I mean, sure, that's a shot. If there's one out there, I mean, where'd they find Brandon Aubrey, the Dallas kicker? I think he was playing like soccer in Australia or something. No, wasn't he like in the arena league? No, Jake Bates was in the UFL, the Lions kicker who hasn't missed a kick yet this season. Yes. He was a UDFA, UFL. Brandon Aubrey, I think, was playing soccer someplace. Yeah, I mean, the Lions kicker had an advantage. He was already playing at Ford Field. He's used to the surroundings. And now he's outstanding. He's outstanding, Cap. I would say, well, can't both things be true? If you want a new kicker, fine. But again, the blocking has to be there for the Bears on their end. Correct. You heard the Vikings players said we knew what their protection issue was against Green Bay. Well, we assumed they'd get that fixed and they didn't. They didn't get it fixed. By the way, Brandon Aubrey played soccer and then switched to American football, playing for the Birmingham stallions in the USFL both 22 and 23, and then signed with the couple. Got it. And he's making them from like 65. But Shea is like lusting after. Now the trend is, is that you can hit it from 55, but you're having problems in the 30s. Some of these kickers. Correct. What happened? Yeah. That includes Brandon Aubrey. So my bro and I are one of the survivor. One's a big one. We got knocked out yesterday. They were down to four people because Sebert Seibert, the commander's kicker, missed an extra point at the end. We're out. It's a lot inexplicable that that happened. That that game that shouldn't have happened. And look, I'm not saying that anybody else you're going to get is automatically going to be perfect or be what Brandon Aubrey was last year with Jake Bates has been for the Lions this year. But I do think we have a problem on our hands where teams are now exploiting the fact that Cairo Santos has a low trajectory on his field goals. And they're blocking them over the middle. That's a spot where it's like, OK, if your legs not going to suddenly get more powerful, like take steroids or something, dude, I don't know what to tell you. You got to be able to get the ball up over the defensive line. Take steroids or something, dude. Come on. I don't know what to tell you. Shane Orland. What are you going to do? OK, go do 100,000 squats this off season. Yeah, but he, Shane, he made what? Like a billion in a row from like 53 and then the guy was like money. What did I say yesterday? There was a point in time. Justin Tucker made a billion in a row, but father time comes for all of us. I don't even know if it's father time. We got incompetence up there. They don't fix the blocking. That's disgusting. I mean, what the hell? What does he make? What does Santos make? That can't be great. I think he got like 16 million when he signed. Am I right? Wrong? OK, Cairo Santos this year. He's making 4.26 million and his cap hit next year, 2.1. Get out of this. This guy is a bigger cap hit than Seqwon Barkley. Cairo, that's fact. Cairo Santos has a bigger cap hit than Seqwon Barkley. I think cap it's the kicker, but also the protection is bad too. It's rickety. You got to defend. You got to make sure that your kicker gets low trajectory, high trajectory. You got to make sure that it's clean for him to kick it. You can miss it. You can miss it. You can make it. But also you just can't let it be a jailbreak through there. Correct. Come on now. It's all I think it's all encompassing. I do. Here's Jay Norley. On the final two scoring drives for Minnesota, the Vikings converted a third and 13, a third and 12, a third and 10. They erased a first and 20 in two place. All while the bears sat back in a soft zone with a four man rush. Shot or no shot. If the bears blitzed at all yesterday, they win the football game. What do you think? I mean, there's just we make so many mistakes. Is it just boil it down to that? Well, I mean, but his point is, is that look at it. There are some positives from the defense. You got to sweat. They came off the milk carton with two tackles for a loss of sack, two quarterback hits. Demarcus Walker with a sack, two tackles for a loss. And and also was able to have a quarterback hit. Owens with a strip recovery. Dexter and Cowart. Also played well enough. Had a couple of nice plays, but the point that Shay's making is, where's the pass rush? Not just yesterday, but all season. It has not been there. So it's supposed to be the hallmark of the team. And the defense is not opportunistic getting takeaways enough. They also not getting enough pass rush. Some say that sacks are overrated. Okay, sacks to me is a number that tells you that you're getting to the quarterback, especially if you're getting to the quarterback in abundance. But you're not even getting enough hurries for me, Cap. But I was just looking at some lack of pressure. Somebody absolutely unsocial posted these numbers. I lost the tweet. Otherwise I'd give them credit. You've got four second round picks you've spent on your defense. Brisker, Gordon, Jervon, Dexter, and Tyreak, Stevenson, who truly looks awful. I don't know what happened to him because a year ago, we're like, wow, what a great pickup that dude is. And now he looks like a lost ball in high weeds. He looks horrible. Yeah. That mistackle on the long run by Aaron Jones. That looked like me trying to make the play. There's too many of those this year. Holy bleep. And the Bears have the third most dollars allotted to the defense on cap numbers. And then any team in the NFL. Well, that's who we are, Cap. That's who we've been for a long time. You're a coach at DC. No, I know. I mean, but the money allocated to the Bears defense, that's who we've been forever. But you've got to be able to pay dividends though. That's the thing. Like you can get, you can pay them. But I mean, look at the second day as that. So the answer to the question is shot. It is a shot. If you blitz again, Donald was fine. But he was rattled at times because he was trying to run out of the pocket. So I would say that, yes, that's a shot. But again, looking at the cornerstones and who we thought were going to be cornerstones on this defense, they're not banking plays. This secondary, this supposed to be the most elite on the team. Where's Jalen Johnson in a big spot? Where's Tyrek Stevenson? He has not been the same since Washington. He is not. Just not. Absolutely. He is not. Checked out or in effect, you know, not effective something. But since Washington, he's not the same guy. I will people are getting on Jalen Johnson a little bit. And I get it, the penalties aren't great. They lock down Justin Jefferson yesterday. That is a difficult thing to do. It's hard for me to say he was horrible when you lock down, maybe the best receiver in the league. He had two PIs. He did. That's a fact. No, I know, but cap also, the PIs are kind of a result of a game plan where you say, be sticky, play, and we'll give those up rather than get torched by this guy. That's how the Lions defense is built. They tell their guys, get up on the line, press, and be handsy. If you give up a PI, that's better than getting burned. Yeah, but on the other side, Addison's just burning you the entire game. That's about a career day. Right. And that's the problem. That's a Tyrek Stevenson issue. That's a Terrell Smith issue. That's on other guys. Like Jalen Johnson, here's what I'll say about Jalen Johnson. Take the orange sleeves off. Make it a little harder for the ref to see what you're doing when you're holding somebody. And the one-- And take steroids. A buddy of mine just texted me, said the one over the middle. That was a putrid play by Jalen Johnson. It was. The long one that ended up with it reversed the interception by, I think, Jonathan Olens. Yes. Okay. Come on, man. This defense has too much money invested, draft pick capital, veteran players, and DC is your head coach, and the calls look terrible. Yeah. Embarrassing. And then I can't get off the fact that we got Vikings players openly going, yeah, we saw on tape, but we knew they'd fix it. Oh, they didn't. How do you not fix the field goal block? I get it, man. I get it. How many times was Simone Biles showing on the broadcast yesterday? Was she showing that? Was it? Was it a lot? Simone Biles? A lot, yeah. Okay. All right. I'm just trying to do the counter between her and Travis Kelsey. Hey, there's one. Yeah, I'm just trying to see. Hey, there wasn't at the game yesterday. Okay. Just making sure that she's getting enough time. Simone Biles. Correct. Especially when Olens makes a big play. And then he did her like gold medal thing. Yes. Yeah, it was super cool. It was awesome. All right, Matty Reflow's the head coach for the Bears is right around the corner. Schedule to join us. On the Captain Jhood Morning Show. Oh, I'm sweating. You're listening to Captain Jhood. Follow the show on Instagram at the Catman and at IGJhood. This is ESPN Chicago. Chicago's home for sports. It's a Captain Jhood Morning Show on the ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you're going to have a great Monday. It's a Bears Monday. Bears lose to the Minnesota Vikings on the lakefront and the Bears are now 4 and 7 on the year with a five game losing streak cap as the losses against Washington. It was just baffling. Arizona was just out of nowhere just to know the Bears are going to be that limp offensively. The New England game was really shocking how bad the Bears played at home on November 10th against New England losing a heartbreaker against the Packers on the 17th and then this one here in overtime. Again, being on the precipice of winning versus winning are two different things. Yeah, and there are so many things that are just gut-wrenching to watch DeAndre Carter let a punt hit him. It's not like it's Vailus Jones back there who has never had any success. He plays in Jacksonville. It's not like it's some rookie plucked off the practice squad and he made a mistake. That's a veteran guy back there. Now he did have a big kick return that set up the touchdown prior to the inside kick. 55 yards, I believe. Great, but you cannot give them the ball at the 15 yard line. You could tell, okay, first of all, with the DeAndre Carter play, I just don't understand how you're not screaming Peter, Peter, Peter, and then running away from the football where it hits him. That stinks, but I do like how he's able to bounce back and ran pissed off. Knowing that he screwed up, he gave up seven points. Correct. Now hand them a touch. He gave them seven points. In a game you could have won. However, I do like that he was able to bounce back and put the Bears in position. Like he definitely was pissed off and he ran pissed off. Like, you know what, I'm going to make up for this and he tried the best he could. I really would love to know what it was that Shane Waldron said in an interview that you went, that's the guy. They interviewed like eight guys, Thomas Brown being one of them. Like, I think the defense looks totally different. Well, I'm not an offensive coordinator cap, but I think you and I both talked about just getting back to basics with Kayla Williams. Like I think you and I talked about this on the show saying that you just have to get your layups. That's what it is. And that means look how the offense was able to work. Cole commit getting the football in key spots from Roma Dunes A to DJ Moore to Keith and Alan. There's some drops there. You're going to get that. I prefer them not to have so many drops in key spots, especially in the second and third down. But the point is though, is that it's not like Kayla Williams is throwing the ball all over the yard. And then when he does, cap, when he gives you the deep ball, they're rainbows. That thing to swift was a thing of beauty, brother. Oh my God. Come on, man. I'm on the move headed to the sideline and drops it in there. That was incredible. Come on, man. I mean, but it just shows you and gives you a glimpse of what it could look like. But I will tell you, I went back and I re-watched that play 10 times. He did have a checkdown open where he didn't have to make such a spectacular throw. Yeah, he did. You got to take the checkdowns of that. It worked out, but guess what? So there's things he's got to be better at. You can't take the sack in overtime with the delay in game following. You can't. But he all in all, in 11 career games, holy cop. Pretty good. Yeah, there's just so much cap. And obviously, from my standpoint, I'm just looking forward to what the quarterback can bring to the table because we know where the season's going. We've been here before, you and I. Here we have. Thanksgiving, underwater, underwhelming, and undeserving of our full attention to thinking that the coaching staff will return, just based on how things are going. It's not going in the right direction. There's just so many else and so many mistakes and so much. And again, the thing that I look at cap that we'll talk to Mattie Rufus about momentarily is just you have to have better chops on the sidelines as far as what you want to do, what plays you want to have in because it looks like a mess. Because it is a mess because look at the one loss record is a mess. That is correct. You have to have better command of the sideline operation. You just have to cap. You can't have these mistakes on a weekly basis. That whole thing with the field goal, we have to address. The field goal unit comes out in the third quarter, fourth, and fourth. And they're halfway out in the field and they have to turn tail, go back. And you want Caleb Williams to turn water in the wine with Keaton Allen? Yeah. And Keaton Allen, who was questionable to play, had a really good game. Really good game. Again, we talked about Caleb. But again, you didn't run the ball as well as you needed to yesterday. That plays into it. Yeah. I'm glad you brought that up. Because it's something we talked to and again, this is what Matt tells us all the time. He understands that he wants to have the wants to run the football. He said this under Waldron. He's still saying that he wants to see more production from the running game. 22 carries for 78 yards. And Caleb Williams is a leading rusher. Is that what you want? You want that? I mean, you want to win the football game, however you can win it. But, you know, DeAndre Swift, 13 carries for 30 yards. I mean, credit to you, Cap. Saint Juan Barclay should have been here. That was a good call by you. Holy cow, is that guy unbelievable? Jeez. I mean, they tried and then it got just too rich for their blood. Yes. And so they end up going to the Eagles. They finished second. Yes. And Saint Juan Barclay in a Bears uniform would have been a middling running back in this league. He would not have the numbers he has right now. Because he would not have Jordan Milata and Lane Johnson and all these dudes up front. That dude is in the Fountain of Youth right now. Look at him. The way they played last night up front, the Eagles. It was the first time all season that I've gone. Maybe the Lions aren't a lot to get to the Super Bowl. That is going to be it. I'm telling you that NFC title game hooding, that's going to be theater. Eagles Lions, that's going to be theater. Yeah. No, I understand. I watched too. I'm very impressed with the Eagles. My wife said to me, hey, we want to go see the kid. We have a son and daughter while living out of town. Can we go this weekend? I'm like, are you kidding me? Absolutely not. No. We'll go the next weekend between the NFC and AFC title game and the Super Bowl. You hit the week off. I'll go then. I'm not missing the Eagles and the Lions potentially. Are you kidding? No. Speaking of your wife, by the way, and we'll get to you. We'll hear from Eddie Riffle who's momentarily here on Cap and Jay Hood speaking of your wife. I need you to ask her tonight. Hey, hon, is 27 points enough for you to win ball games? I already did. Oh, I saw you hit her with it. Go ahead. Go ahead. What was her response? Because I was getting ready to go to my office to do my recap. Yeah, yeah. And I said, boy, Caleb was outstanding today. And she looked at me and she's like, did you win? I said, hon, she's like, how many points did they score? She was said, Costco during the day. I said, 27. Who, Minnesota? I said, no, we, the Bears. Yes. 27 points. And look it up. It would have won most every game. Hey, hey, okay. I was hoping you'd hear with that because she told you the week before is like, you weren't going to win the game against the Packers because the Bears only scored 19. Look around the league cap. That's what she hit you with. Correct. 27 good enough? Yeah. Yes, it was good enough. 100%. Just fell short. Yep. All right. 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6 are a full number. Lewis and Lyle on cap and Jay Hood. Lewis, good morning. Hey, good morning, guys. Hey, cap. You want a bona fide head coach, correct? I do. So, look, this offense has been the only disciplined unit on this or on this team so far ever since Thomas Brown came on. I think we can agree with that. Caleb had a bad sack, but, you know, he's a rookie. Agreed? Correct. All right. So, if you want to see, look, we are so afraid of ruining Caleb Williams' development or something with lack of continuity when we fire Iberfuse. I don't say if I say one because Iberfuse has to go. He keeps costing a game. Why not fire Iberfuse and let Thomas Brown be the interim as an audition? If not, if he doesn't, if he can't hack it, go and get somebody who's more established. But we, I think that we need to keep Thomas Brown around for the sake of his tailblowing continuity. And I don't think any head coach is going to want to come in and it's a GM or an owner saying, hey, you have to have this guy as an offensive coordinator. Okay. Let's address this. We appreciate your telephone call. Let's stop this right now. This Thomas Brown for head coach thing. Okay. Let's stop this right now. So, because the offense looks better, Thomas Brown should be the head coach. Let's not do that. Because that proof of concept is telling you, yes, the offense looks better, but you're still losing ballgames, still losing games. Correct. So, so the offense is better. Yes, cap, but it's the same offense we saw earlier in the season where Caleb was able to have that three game winning streak against the Rams, the Panthers and the Jaguars. Correct. And I thought prior to yesterday, I thought that Jaguars game was his best game. And without the sack yesterday, maybe this would have been number one. That sack was a bad sack. And over time, I'm sure coach would tell you that when we talked to him. Um, Thomas Brown is not going to be the head coach here. He's not. Because if you make him the head coach, he's no longer the OC that's there every single day working with Caleb. He has other responsibilities. Now, could you bring in whoever it is, variable, if that happened? Sure. And make him the OC if they were in agreement with that, but it's two weeks. And losses in two weeks. Correct. Losses. That is correct. So, so, and again, all of this is not predicated on what we want. It's up to the organization, whoever the next head coach will be, whenever that is, for the Chicago Bears, it's him. And it's also on Caleb Williams. Correct. All right. It looks the operation looks good. You sure that's a fit? So because what you're doing is you are looking good offensively, but you're still losing ball games. Are you sure that that's a future? Correct. That those two? I don't know that. I don't either. It's two weeks. Two losses. As you said. Still to come, Matt Iberfluze, the head coach for the Chicago Bears. Here on the home of the Bears, ESPIN 1000. What can Brown do for you? Matt Iberfluze. Iberfluze. Hey, cool. Chop the Chicago Bears. It was really good. I mean, there was a lot of good situations that we had. Breaking down the Bears and the latest updates. All season all season. You know, there's some really good players on both sides. Can that person function with that match? Matt Iberfluze with Captain Jayburn on ESPIN Chicago. You're listening to the Captain Jayburn Morning Show on ESPIN 1000. Also on YouTube, youtube.com. ESPIN Chicago. As we talk to the coach, the Chicago Bears, Matt Iberfluze. And he's on the hotline. Car X, Tiger and Auto Hotline. Rattle, rattle, thunder, batter, boom, boom, boom. Don't worry about the correct snare. Good morning, coach. How are you? Good morning. Coach, after reviewing the film, what did you think of the team's performance? Yeah, so after watching the tape, I'm very pleased with the effort a team played with yesterday. And also, you could certainly feel the belief in the guys in the sideline at the end. And that showed in the game review today. You know, we continue to do some really good things. Grow as a football team. We just finish these games off. And that's just, you know, the whole football team, offense, defense and kicking. You know, I thought the players and the coaching staff was extremely hard, and are staying connected all through last week. And we have to do that again this week on a short week. And then, you know, it's important that we balance the rest and preparation as we go into this Thursday game, you know, because, you know, being rested and being ready to go mentally, physically, you know, and everything and being ready in terms of preparation is going to be really big in terms of the success we have. You know, and then the last thing I would say is that I stand, I stand firm in the belief and all of us as we look forward to playing this game here coming up in this short week. And an injury update for you guys is really just Ryan Bates. It's the only thing we have right now that we came out healthy. This is a short week for us. So today we're working right now. The guys coming a little bit later. We'll have a walk through here on Monday. First and second down and then Tuesday. We'll work our first, second, third down. Working into some two-minute stuff at the end. And then Wednesday we'll work into our red zone day and then we'll travel over there and then play the game at 12.30 on Thursday. Coach, could you take us through why the defense looks like it is having its share of struggles and the coverage is look like guys are running with unfettered access in the middle of the field. This is your area of expertise. And when you put the tape on, what are you seeing that? Oh my God, T.J. Hopkinson or this guy or that guy. What does the tape tell you? Yeah, I always met, you know, some of those bigger-type boys. You know, we had guys in, you know, in the area. We just got to do a good job of finishing at the top of the route and breaking up the ball, you know, in terms of the one pass earlier in the game. You know, and we just got to do a really good job being out of details as coaches and players. What aspect of the defense concerns you most yesterday, 468 all-purpose yards. Cap and I talked about it. Like, the guys have to be, you know, having gap discipline and just being the defense we saw earlier in the season. So what aspect concerns you most? Yeah, really, the biggest thing for me is 11-1, you know. So, you know, all of us working together and, you know, one of 11 has to do their job and we got to keep doing that and being out of the details. And again, that's rush, it's coverage, it's gap discipline with our run fits. And again, that's what the details are. And again, that's coaching, putting the guys in position to be successful. And then it's the execution piece of it. Coach, hoodie and I were talking about the blocked field goal for the second straight week. And then a couple of the Vikings players came out and said we saw on tape. There was an issue on the left side, but we assumed that would get cleaned up. And when it didn't, we went into the same exact area where the Packers were able to, to get the block. And then I believe you guys made an adjustment, moved Darnell right over to the left side. Is this a Cairo issue that he kicks the ball too low? Is this guys not getting the job done up front? Is it a coaching thing? What is it? Well, it comes down to a couple of things. You got to be firmer in there at number one. You can't allow penetration. I think that's always a big part of it. And we did a really good job of that after that. And we got to continue to do a good job of that. And it's always about balling. You want to get the ball as high as possible. And Cairo didn't make a job of that at the end for sure. Well, you know, Cap, you and I talked about this whole thing that you don't want it to be a trend or a tendency where people can be able to use that as a bullseye or a scarlet letter like, hey, you know, he's going to kick the ball low. So just be ready. I just think that it's all encompassing, right? I think it's, to me, it's blocking, but also the low kicking of Cairo. So, but you don't want that to be a trend, obviously, right? Is that something coach that can get addressed from a Cairo perspective, where he tries to get more elevation or at his stage of his career? This is what it is if we want any distance. Yeah, I would just say, like you said, I think it's all encompassing. But I do believe, you know, if you look at that field goal to tie the game, which I love how Cairo came back, you know, end up having that onside kick, which was a great kick. I'll end up hitting those guys. And then also the field goal to tie it at the end was really good operation. And, you know, that's the consistency we're looking for right there. And again, he did a really good job of those two, those two instances. Maddy recluses the head coach for the Chicago Bears. He's with us here on the home of the Bears. ESPN 1000 on the cap and Jhood Morning Show. Coach, how can the communication be better from you and your staff on the sidelines? We're loving games and it's something that you shouldn't have to address all the time. But again, in a big spot, you don't know if you're going for a field goal or if you're going back out there to go forth on fourth down. How could that be better? Yeah, we've been really good at that. You know, obviously our four thousands have been really good. We've communicated well on those. And again, I told you guys yesterday that it would be better in that moment, you know, that particular instance. And I just got to do a Bears opportunity to the field goal team in the offense. And that's really what it is. Again, we've been great at that all year. And we've converted a bunch of fourth downs at critical moments. And we'll continue to do that. Tell me if this statement is correct, Cap, because we discussed how, as coaches, you want to be able to be two or three plays ahead in your head. Correct. Is that how that works for you, Coach, in which you see the play in front of you, but you know that there's a tendency that can go one way or the other. How far along are players in your head to say, hey, you know, if it doesn't go this way, we have to go in this direction. Yeah, that varies. I think it varies because situations change. You know, you can't, I don't think you can put like, hey, you're one, two or three plays ahead. You know, you'd like to be as far ahead as you can. But sometimes it changes based on what happens on the previous play. So it's important that you communicate well. And, you know, during the course of the game. And I feel we've done that very well during the course of the year. Like I said, I need to do a better job with that one instance. Coach, I got to ask you about the challenge. And then Mike Pereira comes on the TV screen, you're coaching. You can't see this. And he says, yeah, you can't use the boundary cam on a coach's challenge, but you can if it's a change of possession, turnover, or a scoring review, because not every stadium has a boundary cam. A, were you aware of that? Because I certainly wasn't. And B, would that have played into your decision to challenge? Because we haven't been able to be successful on a challenge this year. Yeah, you know, certainly we look at a couple of things when we challenge. And again, I am aware of that in terms of the boundary camera. But I do believe that, you know, there's other cameras that we could use. And the reason I use that was because it's either because of points, it's either because of the ball, or it's because of the instance yesterday, it was the explosive play. I mean, that was a huge explosive play of 69 yards. And I wanted to make sure that they were taking a look at it. The league's done a very good job of a replay assist during the course of this year, more and more. And that's going to continue to grow, the replay assist. But again, I knew I had to throw the flag up because that was an explosive play and a big play in the game. Coach, we know, go ahead. Actually, please put the way the defense, you know, loads up through the occasion there. Did a nice job of stopping those guys and that particular field goal. Coach, we know the success of the Lions this season. And that's the next opponent on Thanksgiving. What stands out most about the Lions that concern you? Yeah, I would say the ability to run the ball and stop the run. They do a really good job with that. It starts right there. They're really good at both those on defense. The defense for them, you know, they haven't been scored upon in 12 quarters. They really use the run game well in terms of offense. And, you know, they're explosive on offense. You know, they're obviously topping a lot of categories. And, you know, so they can really lean on one way or the other in terms of leaning on the run or leaning on the pass and they've done that through the course of the year. And they're hot team right now, right? So we're going to have a big challenge ahead of us. And our guys are excited about that challenge. And we're excited about going into that environment and, you know, putting our best foot forward. Coach Caleb had an excellent day. I thought Jacksonville was maybe his best game of the season. And yesterday, the exception of a bad sack in overtime, he was incredible. 340 yards passing sets the Bears rookie yardage record and passing. The throw to the Andre Swift was just, I mean, I was just left shaking my head going. I can't believe we've got that guy. Why first talk about him? But then why is the offense in two weeks under Thomas Brown looks so different? Yeah, you know, he really did a nice job of preparing during the course of this week. And, you know, really understanding the mindset, you know, in terms of the game plan, you know, in terms of like, you know, it's going to be a pressure team. They're going to give you various looks. You know, you have to be quick with the ball, you know, get the ball out when it's there. And if it's not the pressure, then you can go through your progressions. And he did a really nice job of that all week and then obviously during the game. And then the off schedule throws were, like you said, with the one to Swift was pretty amazing. And then some of those fourth down, you know, it makes that he made, you know, in terms of throwing their own there, he scrambled for one. So just a lot of good things in terms of what he's done, in terms of his preparation, in terms of his communication, in terms of, you know, being on the same page with the receivers. And I think that's a big part of his work he's putting in, I mean, in terms of this during the course of the week, you know, and then setting ourselves up for success. And, you know, the big part of that is the offensive staff. Coach with the offensive has done a really good job of that of working together with Thomas, you know, leading that charge. And the guys continue to do that. And again, we're going to need it this week, too. Coach with Thanksgiving coming on Thursday. What are you most thankful for? You know, most thankful for really the health of my family, the health of myself, you know, being able to bless to get up every single day. You know, and to lead this football team. And that's what I'm most thankful for. Coach have a great Thanksgiving. And good luck to be a yeoman challenge on Thursday. All right, thanks, guys. Thank you. Matt Iberfluis, Carx, Tyronaut, Ohio. What do you think of what he had to say? Well, I mean, look, he's obviously in a tough spot here. He is. Fair is fair. This is his opportunity to be a head football coach. And they've lost five consecutive games. And you get on a plane and go to Detroit and you go, oh, God, that's the best team in the national footballing. And they are rolling. I mean dominating people. So not an enviable situation, but you know, he's trying to point out some of the things that they felt that they're doing better at. But the explosive plays are what killed them yesterday. Gave up, I think, six big chunk plays. You know what I heard as some of the answers? What I heard, Cap, was it's like a child that gets a crayon and writes on the wall. And you tell that kid, hey, don't write on the wall. I mean, now we've got to wash that off. And the kid responds by saying, well, the rest of the day, or before this, I didn't write on the wall. But the one time I did write on the wall. Yeah, I did. But the other time I did not, this worldview of what he was saying, I asked him a point of question about, you know, the sideline decorum. Because it happens too often, Cap. This is not just a one off. It happens all the time where they don't know what the hell they're doing. We were talking about, I think specifically the field go, you're coming on, and then we're going to run the fourth down play and he can't hear it. Because it doesn't get in in time. Yeah, sideline decorum. Correct. It's not great. Correct. Well, for the, you know, out of the one time, you know, we've been really good with our communication. Well, no, it's been more than just one time, kid. You wrote on the wall. Yes. We had to take a time out to call a two point conversion. Try a few games ago. Remember that? Yes. That's, that's my point. Seven weeks ago. Okay, that's my point. My point is that it's happening too often. You are correct. And you did, and he's the kid with the crayon. Correct. It's like, well, operation was good outside of that one. Yep. But it happened before. You also wrote on the wall several weeks ago. Correct. And you wrote on the wall before that. I'm telling you to stop running on the wall. So what I'm saying is, is that whatever your issues are, they should be cleaned up, where you know ahead of time what your play is. So that way it doesn't look crazy with the field goal unit coming out. And then here comes Caleb and everybody else come out on offense. That's what I'm saying. But again, he, look, I've made it clear that I think they need to make a coaching change. That said, he's a desp, he's in a desperate spot. Cornered, fighting to stay alive as a head coach. I get it. I get it. That's not his best forum, and his team is going down the drain. He knows the end's coming. Yes. He knows it. Yes. He's a smart guy. And there'll be no tag days. He's made plenty of money, but he wants to succeed at his chosen profession. Of course, you all do. All your life to become a head coach, and it's not going to end well. That's just a fact. Nope. He knows it. Yep. I mean, if you're in sports, you know that you can't have this many else and think that you're going to survive. Very few situations, Captain College and Pro, where an athletic director or a general manager or a president of operations will look at and say, you know what? We're losing a lot. But you know what? You're good for the room. Like that's like a Marvin Lewis for Cincinnati all those years. Like, you know what, Marvin? You're good for the room. We're going to have a bad year, but you know what? You could stay here as head coach. We're going to get this turn. Very few times that that happens. Correct. Unless you already have an infrastructure in place in which it's like, you know what, Tomlin? You're going to be the head coach. You keep winning. You keep being over 500. Well, you could stay. Even though you might have some down years and you get bouncing the playoffs and the other, you're going to stay. But in this situation cap, the resume is so lopsided on the other side. It's so many L's and so many mistakes. And we can go do a three hour show on just stats alone. That's against Eber Flus and his coaching staff for the last three years. Correct. Correct. That's what it is. I think what really bothers me too is like the response is never, it's a lot of, it feels like buzzwords. And I'm not trying to like be mean, but when you lose this many games and you've lost this many games in a row and you keep trying to sell fans and media on what we're growing as a team and we're staying connected and we just have to commit to details. When are we going to see any of that? Yeah, I mean, as a mission statement, that's great. But if the results are L's, it's the same. It is what it is. If someone farts and tells me it smells like roses, I'm going to find out how it smells all on my own. It's all fair? Wow. Yeah, it's, uh... I have to do it, sorry. I mean, well, you did. It's all right, Jay Moore. We understand. Tacos. It's just, I mean, I feel like it's old adult show. I feel like it's over. It just feels like we ask pointed, direct questions that the fans want to know. Why is the defense this? What happened there? How about the field goal block? You know, he said, and then we fixed it and we were able to be fine on the kick that tied the game. Go back and look on social. You can find it and watch how close they came to block in that one. You're right. You're telling me a fired up, whatever they are. 10 and 1 Detroit team isn't going to be salivating to block kicks. Come on, man. All right, we'll take more of your phone calls coming up. If you're on hold, you will be on the air. 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-6 are our phone number. Cap and Jay Hood on a Bears Monday on ESPN 1000.
