Dr. Liao's Week 14 Injury Report
Dr. Liao takes a peak at the ever-growing list of Detroit Lions missing practices and going on IR. Who might make it back this week? Who might make it back for the playoffs? Who are we resigned to missing until next season.
Doc also looks at the Lions next opponent, Green Bay Packers. While they are healthier than the Lions, the Packers may be out Romeo Doubs and Jaire Alexander for Thursday night's game.

Lion's Fans It's time for the podcast you've been waiting for. The show where Kool-Aid runs blue, faces turn red, and rose-colored glasses never go out of style. This is the Detroit Lion's Podcast. Welcome, fellow Lion's Fans, it's Thanksgiving week, it's time for forgiveness and gratefulness. Now that we're 11 and 1 and Super Bowl favorites, it's about time to forgive Matt Patricia for his years with the team and actually thank him for teaching us that close proximity to No. 2 Pencils will cause severe brain damage. Be careful out there, kids. Speaking of coaches with brain damage, I'm thankful to the Bears for not firing Matt Eber Flus until after the Lions game. I want to forgive Aiden Hutchinson for breaking his leg, which is only accelerating his evolution to his final form as a Terminator. Judgment Day is coming next year for NFL quarterbacks, and I just checked with draft expert Jeff Risen who informed me that neither John Connor or Sarah Connor is coming out for the upcoming draft. I want to forgive Jamo for getting suspended again. It's actually going to make it cheaper to re-sign him in the future, so thanks for thinking about our salary camp, Jamo. Let's forgive Brian Branch for being such a hard hitter that he broke Anseloni's forearm because with weeks of rest and treatment, he's coming back so much healthier, fresher, livelier, and more vibrant. I'm referring to his hair, of course, which is going to look so damn good. My wife is going to be so jealous, and I would too if I had hair. Let's thank Dan Campbell for using this to stick clear powers, not just for fourth downs, fake puns, and running up scores, but also for impregnating his wife and expanding the Wong Pride family. Congrats, coach, for putting aside the wheelbarrow and wheelbarrow in your wife. I'm thankful that instead of being in position for the number one pick, we're in position for the number one seed. And now we can finally say, fuck them picks. And after watching the Michigan Ohio State game Saturday, I'm thankful not because Michigan won. I mean, that happens every year, but because it'll be another year before I have to hear Gus Johnson scream, "The world famous Ohio State Buckeyes!" I'm Jimmy Liao, University of Michigan Medical School grad, board certified in family medicine, and newest member of the Lions practice squad. Just kidding, I pulled an oblique laughing at Tyreak Stevenson getting hit in the face with a football, and then I pulled my other oblique laughing at the Chicago Bears clock management at the end of the game, so now I'm on IR also. I hope you guys enjoyed your Thanksgiving buffet of Lions' injuries, but seriously, I hope you guys did stuff your face full of delicious Thanksgiving food because we're only a couple more injuries away from you playing defensive line for the Detroit Lions. I'm recording this on Sunday morning before the full slate of games, things are moving fast. By the time you're listening to this, the Lions probably just put seven more guys on IR. But let's review the last two games in chronological order to see where we stand. Let's start with the Colts game. Long-term injury to Kaleef Raymond, who went on IR for a left foot injury. Fortunately, not a season ender. He's going to be back at the latest for the start of the playoffs. On video, possible turf-toe hyper-extension, possible mild foot-spring, lung concern I had was Alyss Frank, based on how he landed. Alyss Frank is a spring or fracture of the midfoot that can be a very difficult injury to come back from. It's a severe one. We've seen guys like Amir Abdullah and Kevin Jones have career altering, severe-less franks. There's 26 bones in the foot, so a lot of things can go wrong. But good news that Kaleef Raymond does not have anything too serious or too long-term. Moving on to the short-term injuries coming out of the Colts game, Taylor Decker on video looked like a pretty clear right MCL spring and a right high ankle or medial ankle spring. He got rolled up on which can cause those things. He did return to the game, he was acting totally fine after the game and said he would play, but he ended up not playing on Thanksgiving. MCLs and high ankles, even mild ones, can cost a couple games. We saw this with Decker last year when he had an ankle spring week one versus the Chiefs. Finished the game, but then missed the next two. He might have tore his ankle deltoid ligament that game, which got surgically repaired after the season. The lesson is, he can't always trust what a player is saying right after a game. Another minor short-term injury, Carlton Davis, with a left knee area strain. He left the game and didn't play on Thanksgiving. It was a non-contact, but it was not an ACL. He was biking on the sideline during the game, which generally signifies trying to keep a muscle warm. That makes it unlikely a meniscus issue, suspecting it's not a knee joint issue. But one of the posterior muscles and tendons that attaches to the knee area, reports are that it's minor, so that's good. David Montgomery got popped in the right shoulder. May have been an AC joint spring or a shoulder contusion. Play the next game with a taped up. No concerns, he looked good. Amun Ra heard his right knee on a punt return. Unless it's the playoffs, we need a better backup punt returner plan. Video was obscured, but he was grabbing at his upper right calf area after the play, suspecting a muscle string or a contusion. He did finish the game and also looked very good on Thanksgiving, so no concerns going forward. Let's move to the Thanksgiving game against the Bears. A whole slew of injuries will deal with this in chronological order based on what time it happened during the game. A manual mostly before the game was a surprise and active. Remember, he's coming back from a peck-ruption August. He had played 15 special team snaps against the Colts last game. After the game, Dan Cavill said pregame something popped up, but nothing serious, so good news there. Maybe a mild peck irritation, maybe totally something else going on in the lower legs. Who knows, but good thing it's not anything long term. Another corner back, Tyrion Arnold, who had missed the Colts game with a groin, did not start the first drive which was semi-concerting, but in just being a precautionary thing, as he played the rest of the way and looked real good. No concerns there going forward. Josh Pasco during the game took a hard step onto his right leg and left the game permanently. He did come back though and was on the sideline, which is good news. It could be a bone bruise with how hard he landed on that right leg or a mild knee spring. Early reports are that it's not long term. He did not get put on IR. Levi Ansureke strained his left hamstring. Hamstrings can get aggravated pretty easily, so he's likely going to miss at least one or two games, but not placed on IR, which is reassuring. Makai Wingo ended up having a long term issue. Right knee injury during the game, placed on IR, he was hurt on the first drive of the third quarter, not much showed up on video. His right leg got pulled slightly awkwardly. Hard to say what happened there. After the game, Dan Campbell said he's out for the year and probably gets surgery. So what does that mean if we take it at face value, if it's a complete ACL tear, he's definitely getting surgery. If it's a meniscus tear, he's also definitely getting surgery. Meniscus, you're getting a scope surgery for diagnostic reasons at the minimum. You're putting a scope in there to see how much damage there is in the meniscus because MRIs aren't perfect and can't see exactly what's going on. Also, if it's a meniscus, you're going to do a trim and clean up of the torn meniscus as well as suck out any loose bodies, which are loose meniscus fragments that can cause irritation. So if it's a probable surgery, what are the possibilities? Maybe a partial ACL, maybe a spring of the MCL, LCL, or PCL. A lot of those can heal on their own, but sometimes they do get surgery, so that could explain the probable surgery. But that's assuming we're taking down Campbell at face value, and we can't always do that with head coach talking about injuries. We'll have to keep an ear out to see if we get any more specifics about Wingo's issue. Want to shop Walmart Black Friday Deals first? Walmart Plus members get early access to our hottest deals. The next guy is DJ Reader, who had a left shoulder injury during the game. The way he landed, with his arm outstretched behind him. Concerning for a shoulder subluxation, which is a transient dislocation on the shoulder. He did finish the game, but I saw that the shoulder was bothering him at points the rest of the game. Hoping it's just a shoulder string and nothing more severe. The shoulder subluxations or dislocations can put a guy out for weeks and can often lead to surgeries because they can cause cartilage tears. Dan Skipper took a direct blow to the right back or flank area, which is exactly where he heard his ribs in the week 3 Cardinals game. I'm suspecting an aggravation of that injury. He didn't miss a play, but finished the game. In good news though, he's looked much more solid and left tackled than in the past, which is really nice in case either Decker or Sewell go down long term. We still do need a much better offensive tackle backup solution though, so hopefully Geo Manuk can live up to his potential fast. Khalil Dorsey, late in the game, looked like a right low ankle spring. He was limping, but he stayed in, so he should be fine. The main unfortunate issue coming out of the game was Malcolm Rodriguez, who had a right ACL tear. This is typically 11-month recovery. Expect him to start camp on pup physically only able to perform list and maybe see him around September/October. ACL tears, if it's isolated, he'll very reliably well. You can get back to pretty much 100%, but about half of ACLs do have associated meniscus tears, which is a long-term potential issue. Zedarius Smith at the end of the game was helped off a couple of times, suspecting simple, benign cramps. He was drinking that little 5-hour energy-looking bottle on the sideline, which was the tell. Brian Branch at the very end of the game was grabbing at his left ankle, but he stayed in, so hopefully he's fine. In summary, the main issues coming out of the Thanksgiving game, Rod Rigo and Mackay Wingo on IR and out for the season, Pasco and Levi's short-term losses, hopefully they'll be back within two or three weeks. DJ Reader still haven't heard word on him. If it's truly a shoulder subluxation issue that is a reliability concern going forward because once you sublux at once, it's more likely you're going to sublux it again. Let's now review the entire IR list as we're currently entering week 14. I posted a detailed article above this on Lion's Wire, so feel free to check that out. The guys who are definitely coming back, Alex Anseloni with his forearm fracture, expect him back in one of the last two regular season games. Khalif Raymond with his foot or toe spring, expecting him back at the latest the playoffs, but he could be back for the end of the regular season. Aiden Hutchinson, technically he'll be back for the Super Bowl, but he won't be himself, so don't expect anything like his elite form. He is on schedule as far as rehab. There was a video that just dropped showing him walking without crutches at the seven-week mark, which is on schedule, not ahead of schedule. Full-bone healing will occur around nine to ten weeks. He's going to have a lot of atrophy in those legs, so he's going to take a while to get strength, flexibility, burst, quick twitchiness back. I still expect him in the Super Bowl, but with limited ability. The guys who are uncertain to return from IR right now, Jalen Reeves may have been with an unknown neck injury. He is eligible to return this week versus the Packers. With any kind of neck issue, you do worry about a spinal issue, especially when the guy got put on IR. A spine issue can easily be a season bender, but have not heard any word on him. Ennis Rakestraw, second hamstring of the year, landed him on IR. He can return week 16, which is December the 22nd, unknown severity of this time. A fatu melafangu has missed most of the year with the ankle Achilles, suspecting Achilles tendonitis. He started his practice window November, but then heard one of his left fingers. He was wearing a splint on this on Thanksgiving. You can see a picture of that on my Twitter timeline. Who knows? Maybe his Achilles ankle isn't even ready yet. Not sure what's going on with him. He can return in week 16. The guys who are unlikely return, but still a tiny possibility. John Cominsky, MCL surgery in July with a 5-6 month estimate. January would be best case scenario if that estimate is accurate. Looking for a great non-alcoholic beer? Yeah. Try athletic brewing co. Derek Barnes with an MCL-PC-L injury with surgery in September was only barely getting on exercise bike in mid-November. So he's gonna have to make really rapid progress in rehab if he's hoping to be back late in the playoffs. Unlike Hutchinson though, they're not gonna play him in the Super Bowl at 50 or 70%. He's just not that level of a player. Guys who have no chance to return from IR, Rodrigo, 11-month recovery, expecting pup at the start of the camp, hope to see him in September/October, he's got one-year left on the rookie deal, so we will see him next year. Marcus Davenport, left elbow, reported triceps rupture in September. Unrestricted free agent, so we may never see him back. Kyle Pecko in October with a left-peck rupture, if he was a cornerback like Mosley or CJGJ, a 16-week recovery would put him back for the Super Bowl, but he's a defensive tackle who needs full peck strength, so he's not gonna return. He's an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year. Guys who have already returned from IR, Broderick Martin, who heard his right knee in August, he played two defensive snaps only on Thanksgiving, but with Levi, Wingo, Pascal all going down, he may play a lot more coming up on this packers game. Emmanuel Mosley missed last game with a minor issue, but doesn't sound serious, he did return from IR and played 15 snaps against the Colts on special teams. The overall summary for the team, good news, the offense is remarkably healthy. Every starter is pretty much healthy, Decker is a short-term issue, but he should be back soon, even most key backups are healthy including Tim Patrick, Skipper, Brock Wright, Kaleef Raymond, a key backup should be back by the end of the regular season or early playoffs. We really need the offense to carry this team going forward, that means we may see an even higher percentage of going forward on fourth downs, which is absolutely the right move when the strength of the team is offense and not defense. This was the same situation as last year, people were understandably upset about a couple of failed fourth downs in the NSC Championship game, but that is the right move because our defense could not hold up last year that was proven during the second half of that game. This year might be the same scenario, our defense is taking so many losses, we can't trust that they're gonna hold up, our offense is the strength, let them stay on the field and try to win the game for us. Just got done watching the Vikings in Cardinals game, unfortunately the Cardinals did not come through for us, that is a good example though, of being aggressive on fourth down and not settling for field goals, the Eagles Ravens is going on right now as I speak, the Ravens are winning right now so hopefully that score holds up. Now I was gonna add an update on the practice reports, but that is still not out yet, it's already 5.30 Eastern time. There are some updates from Dan Campbell's press conference, he said that Taylor Decker is day to day, it'll come down to the wire whether you can go this week, I'd say he's a toss up, he missed two games last year with a similar looking ankle spring. From the Packers standpoint, Jayer Alexander corner back, who's missed the past two games with a PCL return to practice, he's been in and out for weeks with the PCL, he's sort of a wild card unpredictable, he probably needs to take some more time off with that PCL that heal, but he may play against us. Romeo dubs wide receiver missed last game with a concussion, but he returned to practice today, sounds like he's on track to be able to play. Alright, that's it for this week, enjoy Thursday night against the Packers, talk to you next time.
