Brad and John - Mornings on KISM
yacht rock doc
Brad and John KISM that that band right there is at the center of Yacht Rock. They're the most important part of the most important band when it comes to Yacht Rock Brad and John KISM. At least according to this Yacht Rock documentary that started streaming on HBO this week and it was a fun little breeze through 1970s and and 80s music and Yacht Rock is you know it's it's a as they said in the documentary it's kind of hard to define but when you it's like porn when you see it you know and when you hear it you kind of know how they defined it that's how they said it yeah when you when you when you hear it you kind of know it they they call I think they call it the dooby bounce the dooby bounce and a lot of it has to do with Michael McDonald this is they just they say this is the greatest Yacht Rock song right here this one here from the dooby brothers and this is the bounce that that is kind of that is in a lot of different Yacht Rock songs what they call the dooby bounce probably certain beats per minute or something yeah whatever whatever it might be the formula and the the documentary at the center of the documentary a couple of guys who supposedly coined the term Yacht Rock about 15 20 years ago they've got some kind of podcast and they've written a book or whatever about it and and and they have ranked all of the Yacht Rock songs and this is the highest ranking this is the most yachteous of all the Yacht Rock songs what a fool believes by the dooby brothers I want to put an ascot on right now Steely Dan has a number of songs in there and some boat shoes uh Michael McDonald you know it's not just this song but he's got a number of other ones like they've got I keep forgetting from Michael McDonald I don't know if you know what that one is but that's in there Rosanna from Toto is in their top 10 of the greatest Yacht Rock songs of all time Christopher Cross is sailing is among those in there lots of Toto as I said in there uh but they say Steely Dan is the most important contributing artist to Yacht Rock not just for their own songs but because and they made a really good case for this because of all the Yacht Rock artists that they list they say that most of a lot of these a lot of these musicians many of them were session musicians at one time played with Steely Dan and got together in Steely Dan playing and were influenced by each other and then they branched out to Toto you know Kenny Loggins's work Bob Skaggs work that kind of stuff I can see that so they so Steely Dan is whether they like it or not and they don't we're gonna play a clip from Donald Fagan of Steely Dan who uh did not want to be part of this documentary at all uh whether they like it or not they're kind of in the center of all this so the greatest Yacht Rock song of all time they say is what a fool believes the greatest Yacht Rock album of all time is Steely Dan's Asia that has Peg on it a bunch of other greats I love that album the king of Yacht Rock they say is Michael McDonald his voice his keyboards and all that and that feathered hair and then Steely Dan and then yes the the feathered hair and all that but as much as they as much as as Steely Dan and like that Donald Fagan and like that term these guys have all it's kind of the Yacht Rock term has breathed a new life into some of their careers or has kind of added enhanced it in some ways Kenny Loggins would tell you that total would the streams are probably going up and stuff yeah it's it's helped them in that regard but Donald Fagan so they they try to get they they have the Michael McDonald sits down with them and and is very self-deprecating Kenny Loggins the same thing the guy's from total all having fun with the documentary laughing at it having a good time but what about the guy who's responsible for all this you know the guy in the middle of it all Donald Fagan of Steely Dan they get him on the phone they try to get him to comment about this and here's how that went hello mr. Fagan yeah this is this is he yeah hi this is uh this is Garrett I'm the one making this Yacht Rock documentary yeah so I've been talking to a lot of people that played with you and Steely Dan over the years and I was wondering if you'd sit down with me and talk about your music and this genre and what genre is that um Yacht Rock oh yeah well I tell you what what do you go yourself and that's why that is it that's pretty much the end of the documentary right there I will but there's some funny Christopher Cross stories about acid it inspired songs and weed inspired career and all that kind of stuff which will tackle in the trash at 745 this morning yeah hold on America it's more verand and john next we'll be right back why am I explaining this
